We’ve all had nights when we just can’t lie down in bed and sleep, whether it’s from heartburn, cardiac problems, hip or back aches – it could be a variety of reasons. Those are the nights we’d give anything for a comfortable chair to sleep in, one that reclines to exactly the right degree, raises feet and legs to precisely the desired level, supports the head and shoulders properly, operates easily even in the dead of night, and sends a hopeful sleeper right off to dreamland.

FISHING BIG WORMS FOR SUMMER BASS BRANDON LESTER
A
s far as baits go for summer fishing, you’ll see a wide variety of techniques come into play. Big crankbaits, jigs, swimbaits, spoons and all sorts of other baits will catch fish as the warm water temperatures of summer arrive. One bait I’ve always had a ton of confidence in this time of year is a big worm. It’s a very versatile bait that just gets bites in the summer months. Big plastic worms have been around a long time, and they’re often overlooked. You can use a big worm with a light bullet-shaped weight and swim it through grass in shallow water or put a heavier weight on and fish it 30 feet deep. It has a big profile that is just the right size for fish looking to make an easy meal after the spawn is done. That shallow grass bite is extremely fun and isn’t all that common these days. X Zone Lures has a new one out called the Blitz worm that’s 11 inches long and is the perfect size for big summertime bass. It has a ribbon-style tail that has great

action and is available in the best colors as well. I throw big worms on an MHX-NEPS90HF 7’6” heavy power rod and 17-lb. Vicious 100% fluorocarbon. That rod is perfect for maintaining the proper contact with the worm on a long cast and getting a good hook in the fish, especially big fish. A key part of my gear setup is the Mustad Big Bite worm hook. It’s a round-bend style and a 4/0 up to 6/0 is my go-to for big worm fishing. In recent years, we’ve been fishing big worms on a heavy shaky head, too. A ¼- to ½-ounce shaky head allows the worm to stand up a little straighter on the bottom. It is a great way to fish them. I always encourage people to try new baits and new techniques, but don’t pass up throwing a big worm this summer. It works – trust me.

ith state control of Gulf of Mexico red snapper seasons, recreational anglers are seeing more access to one of the most popular fisheries on the planet. However, keeping track of when and where you’re allowed to fish is now harder than ever. With 2019 state summer seasons already open and rocking along, here’s a quick run-down of the regulations so you can tell whether or not you’re allowed to make red snapper fishing a part of your summer vacation.
State Seasons Florida: June 11-July 12, with a possible fall season if there is available quota. Alabama: Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from June 1-July 28, plus Thursday, July 4. Mississippi: May 24-Sept. 2 (Labor Day), with a mid-season closure from July 8-28. Louisiana: Opened May 25 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until the state’s recreational quota of 743,000 pounds is met. Harvest is also allowed on the Monday of Memorial Day and the Thursday of the Fourth of July. Texas: Open year-round in state waters. State waters extend from the coastline out to the 9-mile mark for Texas and Florida’s Gulf coast. State waters in Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana stretch out to three miles from the coast. The daily bag limit is two fish per person with a 16-inch minimum length, except in Texas, where there is a four fish per person daily limit with a 15-inch minimum length requirement. A state-specific license is needed for whichever state waters an angler plans to be in possession of red snapper. Each state is also collecting its own red snapper harvest data. Reporting requirements and self-reporting for each state can be conducted through the following apps. See the state websites for information on how to obtain these apps. Florida: iAngler Guld Red Snapper App Alabama: Snapper Check Mississippi: Tails n’ Scales Louisiana: Recreational Offshore Landing Permit App Texas: iSnapper App Federal Season Federally permitted for-hire vessels have 62 days to fish the Gulf of Mexico in federal waters. The federal season is June 1-Aug. 2.

TARGETING SHORELINE SNOOK
By Will Schmidt
I
t was a typical steamy morning with no wind and flat calm surf. Although I was casting toward the rising sun and could not see into the water, the large accelerating wake tipped me off to a fast-coming strike. Moments later my line was tight and chaos ensued as the large snook made for deeper water. This is a regular occurrence during the summer along the beaches of southwest Florida, and fortunately it can be enjoyed from a boat or the beach, making it accessible to all. You don’t even need to know secret spots, just get out and start looking.
Sure it’s helpful to use your fishing senses to start your search. I like to begin at a pass if possible, but these fish will spread out up and down the beaches. Beach fish tend to be found in one of two places, cruising down deeper cuts or sitting tight to the beach waiting to ambush unsuspecting prey. Because of this, when on foot, it is very important to keep your distance from the water. These laid-up fish can be in extremely shallow water sitting in that first little drop off where the waves lap up, and if you are too close they will see you long before you see them. When choosing your lures, keep in mind that the water is usually pretty clean here and you are fishing over a white sandy bottom. For that reason, lighter colors work best. Spoons can be deadly, and I’m partial to a Reflecto spoon. Bucktail jigs in white, soft swimbaits in light colors and suspending twitch baits all work well, too. You will often see schools of pilchards along the beach, so anything that emulates them is usually a good choice. For tackle, don’t over do it. This is light-tackle fishing at it’s best. A good portion of these beaches is clear from snags and hazards, so heavy gear is not needed. I opt for a G Loomis PR844 popping rod. Its light action allows me to cast anything from a small white bait to a jig. A Shimano 2500 Stradic balances out well, and when spooled with braid gives you plenty of line with stopping power, too. I opt for slightly heavier, 17-pound braid for a couple reasons. In the rare case when a snook does find that one lost crab trap, I have a little more oomph to turn the fish. More importantly, I like the slightly heavy line for knot strength and durability. Regardless of whether you’re in a boat or on foot, fishing the beaches is great. Almost anyone, from a seasoned pro to a visiting newbie, has a great chance at catching fish. Productive beaches are easily accessible and don’t take a lot of preparation or equipment. A pocket full of lures and extra leader is all you really need. Will Schmidt is a seasoned tournament angler and has been writing about fishing for more than two decades.

CCA STAR 4,000 Anglers, $500K in Prizes and Scholarships
T
he CCA Florida STAR competition presented by Yamaha kicked off on Memorial Day weekend, engaging over 4,000 anglers in conservation. The 101-day event invites anglers of all ages and skill levels to walk away with their share of $500,000 in prizes. During the opening week, five unregistered anglers caught 2019 STAR tagged redfish and missed their choice of a brand-new truck or boat, motor and trailer package in the event’s signature iHeart Radio Tagged Redfish Division, including a GMC Sierra pickup truck, a Contender Boats 22 Sport, a Pathfinder Boats 2200 TRS, a Hewes Redfisher 16, a 21’ Carolina Skiff, or a Relentless Boats 24’ Aluminum Bay/Flats boat, all powered by Yamaha Outboards. The CCA Florida STAR competition releases an average of four tagged redfish per coastal county in the state, three counties have eight tagged fish and those are Brevard, Charlotte and Citrus counties. Each year during the competition, anglers catch the fish and call, per tag instructions. And each year, most anglers who catch these tagged fish miss out on a $40,000+ prize package because they aren’t registered, or never thought it would happen to them. Since its inception, the competition has awarded five prizes in the signature redfish division, with over 90 tagged redfish caught in those four years and nearly $900,000 in total prizes. Registration remains open throughout the competition until Labor Day. The STAR competition launched in Florida in 2015 with a focus on conservation through the use of technology and a catch-photo-release format. CCA Florida uses the social media-based event to educate the public on the importance of protecting Florida’s marine resources, and STAR’s smart phone app eliminates the requirement for anglers to harvest or capture and transport fish, while promoting the proper handling of all species. In addition, non-anglers can participate and win by collecting trash and debris. With 17 total divisions, prizes are awarded by random drawing in most divisions and include boats, cash payouts, tackle and marine electronics. As in past years, current New Tide Members (CCA members ages 6 – 17) can enjoy continued free registration in the Youth Scholarship Division, presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors, which offers $100,000 in scholarships. For a full list of divisions, visit ccaflstar.com. For more information on STAR, or to register, visit ccaflstar.com.

f you’ve ever competed in a fishing tournament, then you understand how the thrill of the hunt fueled by a competitive drive can create levels of excitement, anticipation, joy and crushing defeat all in the same day… or the same hour, for that matter! When you bring hundreds of people together that share this passion to help find a cure for leukemia, you have what promises to be a great time! Once you throw in the drag-screaming thrill of a big king mackerel, you’ve found yourself smack in the middle of the C-quarters Marina Kingfish Shootout in Carrabelle, Fla. Anyone capable of making it Carrabelle in August should participate. It’s a great tournament, and anyone has the potential to bring home the gold. In the world of competitive fishing, it’s anybody’s game on any given day. This event has a Spanish mackerel division, giving competitors more chances to win and more species to chase. Obviously, due to their smaller size, the Spanish mackerel won’t burn the bearing out of most reels like a king can, but on light tackle these fish put up as much fight, pound-for-pound, as any of them! These toothy critters demand wire leaders and smooth drags. A 40-pound skyrocketing king will cut through mono effortlessly, and if your reel has a sticky drag, forget it; they strike with incredible speed! Live or dead bait will get them to strike, as will a variety of trolled plugs or duster rigs. When trolling, try to target different depths and vary your speed. Some days they want their targets moving fast, and on others, they want it slow or dead still. This is where one of my favorite ways to catch them comes into play. Anchor up or drift with several flat-lines out with an offering of live or dead baits such as cigar minnows, Spanish sardines or even pinfish. Enjoy a cold beverage and a snack, bask in the warm sun and take in the beauty of the Gulf of Mexico. When that peaceful moment is interrupted by the sound of a screaming drag and a bent rod, you’ll be hooked on king mackerel fishing just like me. These fish are incredible fighters, and big ones can peel off a hundred yards of line in mere seconds! C-quarters Marina will host the 16th Annual Kingfish Shootout Aug. 3-4 in Carrabelle, Fla. Inspired by the tragic loss of Lisa Crowder Jackson to leukemia, the volunteers who run this event have, to date, raised $1,000,125 for the Leukemia Research Foundation. Come support this wonderful event and enjoy all that Franklin County has to offer, I promise, you’ll want to come back. For more information on the tournament, go to www.c-quartersmarina.com. Solace Boats has unveiled the newest center console that will surely take the fishing world by storm. When the pencil first hit paper, quality in design was a top concern. Each line brought to life a vision for the future of boating which simultaneously revised long-standing marine principles. Rather than aimless innovation, every item (new and old) saw thoughtful design for longevity followed by extreme testing. Quality truly was engineered into boats.

Center sp A YEAR CHASING THE ROYAL BILLFISH SLAM
Editor’s Note: IGFA’s Billfish Royal Slam requires anglers, over a lifetime, to catch nine species of billfish. The following is how Trent Glaub, of Palm Beach, Fla., completed a Billfish Royal Slam in less than a year. By Trent Glaub 1) Black marlin; Los Suenos, Costa Rica; March 20, 2018— On vacation with my wife Stacy and our daughter Marlynn (pronounced marlin), we fished with Capt. Randall aboard the Go Fish. Slow-trolling bridled tuna, I hooked into what I thought was a big jack… until we saw the dorsal fin. “Negro, negro!” yelled Capt. Randall. I battled the estimated 400-pound black marlin stand-up on 30-pound tackle and achieved my first-ever marlin release. I had no idea how lucky I was until Carey Chen told me he’s caught more than 300 blue marlin and is still in search of his first black. I set out to catch all five marlin species. I hadn’t even thought about the Royal Slam yet.
We made a 50-mile, two-hour run to the Finger Bank. When we arrived, the ocean was alive with birds and porpoise balling schools of bait. The bait was so thick we dip-netted sardines, hooked them and pitched them back out, sight fishing to striped marlin on bait balls. My wife, my daughter and I were hooked up nonstop, and we ended up returning to the marina flying 20 release flags.
6) Pacific sailfish; Casa Vieja Lodge, Guatemala; Dec. 28-30, 2018—This year, with my 40th birthday on Christmas Day, the girls and I spent the holidays in Guatemala aboard the 35’ Knowles A-FIN-ITY with Capt. Niko. 2) White marlin; West End, Grand Bahama; May 5, 2018— I was fishThe fishing was great. I quickly knocked Pacific sailfish off the list and ing the Mike Schmidt Winner’s Circle Tournament out of Old Bahama Bay went on to catch a bunch of them, taking turns with Stacy and Marlynn. with my regular tournament team on the Fragrant Harbor, captained by Joe Garbo. The white marlin took a ballyhoo trolled on 50-pound tackle. 7) Atlantic sailfish; Palm Beach, Fla.; Jan. 1, 2019— I’ve fished the Silver Phillies Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt signed my release flag. Sailfish Derby with Capt. Joe Garbo for the last 13 years. This year we finally I broke off what would have been my first Atlantic blue marlin during won it by one fish aboard the 60’ Viking Fragrant Harbor. I chose to use this tournament. this special sailfish for the Royal Slam. It ate a live goggle eye on 20-pound tackle. 3) Pacific blue marlin; Kona, Hawaii; June 23, 2018— On family vacaWith just two species to go, I decided to push for the Royal Slam in less tion, we fished with Capt. It was an intense battle even on 130-pound tackle. 8) Swordfish; Palm Beach, Fla.; Feb. 16, 2019— My buddy Connor McKWith three species down, I was still looking for my Atlantic blue mar- ee and I set out on a beautiful night in my 32’ Intrepid No Worries. More than an hour later, Conner stuck the estimated 200-pound fish with a harpoon. It had a 74-inch lower-jaw-to-fork length. 4) Atlantic blue marlin; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Oct. 21, 2018— I broke my curse during the San Juan International Billfish Tournament aboard 9) Shortbill spearfish; Kona, Hawaii; March 16, 2019— I boarded The the Heavy Duty with Capt. The blue ate my named Black Bart. I was on the very same boat Miller caught his record lure, and I took it to the chair. On 30-pound tackle, I finally caught my first from. Atlantic blue marlin. With Capt. Steve Epstein and Capt. Kevin Hibbard, it didn’t take long “That’s what I came to Puerto Rico for, boys!” I yelled. Afterward, the for the riggers to go off. On The Rocks
Photo courtesy of Controlled Descent Lures. By Capt. Michael Okruhlik n the rocks is a great place to find summertime fish of all species. The cooler deep currents washing around and through miles of barnacle-encrusted granite provides an abundance of cover for bait and gamefish alike. The close proximity to open water draws both inshore and nearshore predators, offering a vast array of opportunity for the jetty angler. Some jetties offer easy walk-on access, while others are only accessible by boat. Both options require special caution to safety. If walking the rocks is your choice, any amount of green algae can create an instant slip hazard. This is something I’ve witnessed
O
many times, and the result is always abrasions and bruises from the barnacles and sharp edges of the granite boulders. A simple safeguard against slipping is to wear spiked golf shoes, river shoes with studs, or my favorite and most economical, a simple 3/16-inch sheet metal screw. Simply screw several of these into the sole of your shoes, and you will have a much better grip on the rocks. Change these out before every trip, and you’ll enjoy a safe day on the rocks. If you are fishing the jetties by boat, having a good anchor is paramount. Special attention also needs to be focused on the current and wind to ensure you will not swing into the rocks. Knowing the tide chart is also a must. A switch in tide direction and velocity can pull your anchor, creating an obvious safety concern. Now to the catching! I would say live bait, specifically shrimp, is the most used bait when fishing the jetties, and for a good reason. All fish species find it hard to turn down a wounded shrimp. They can be fished on the bottom, under a popping cork or free lined. When dredging the bottom, make sure your hardware is on the sand and off the rocks. This is a good way to target flounder, redfish and black drum. I recommend using a #10 treble when fishing under a cork or freelining. The shrimp can be rigged under the horn or in the tail, and some people like to break the tail fin off to release a scent trail. This is a good technique for trout, sheepshead and Spanish mackerel. There are many ways to fish shrimp under a cork, but the following is my favorite technique when fishing the jetties. Use a popping cork that is heavily weighted at the bottom. Tie your line to the top of the cork and also tie your leader to the top. A 3- to 5-foot leader is ideal. Depending on the strength of the current and the depth of the fish, a split shot can be placed a few feet above your #10 treble, or you can freeline under the cork. A 7-foot rod is a minimum length for walking the rocks. Give the jetties a try this summer, be safe, and watch your footing while on the rocks. Capt. Michael Okruhlik is the inventor of Controlled Descent Lures and the owner of www.MyCoastOutdoors.com.

HOT SUMMER FISHING IN THE LAGOON
Like

By Richard Matteson hen the fishing is hot… the Treasure Coast is also hot. Here are some ways to beat the heat and catch fish on the beach, the St. Lucie River and the South Indian River Lagoon. The best fishing is early morning and late, which will eliminate problems with overexposure to the sun.
W
of the shoreline. If you cast deeper, you’ll catch more jacks, bluefish and ladyfish. Remember to bring extra jigs and leaders since your line can be cut by bluefish and mackerel. The Lagoon: I fish the lagoon at first light. Since I usually wade, I want to be on the water at sunrise and off the water by 10:30 a.m., when it starts getting hot. The fish will still bite during the hot part of the day, but overexposure to the sun is a problem. I love fishing at night around the Stuart bridges, where the snook congregate around bridge lights. You need to fish moving tides, and I prefer falling tide. I fish topwater, shallow-running crankbaits and jigs. I like a 1/8-ounce CAL jig with a 4-inch pearl-white paddletail as my main search-bait. My favorite wading spots are Walton Road, Herman’s Bay North, and Midway Road. Since there’s still little grass south of Vero, I target shallow water with mangroves and piers. St. Lucie River: I like the Crossroads area and South Fork. Right now there are tarpon in the North Fork. The St. Lucie, in general, is not easy to wade and is better fished in a boat. Since not much freshwater has been dumped from Lake Okeechobee this year, the salinity level is good and the fishing is great.
The Beach: I’ve already had several 30- to 40-fish days fishing in the evening on South Hutchinson Island. I walk the beach and cast various lures. If the fish are there, almost any lure will work. I usually fish the beach accesses between Tiger Shores (south) and Hermann’s Bay (north). When you go to any beach access, look for birds and bait. If there’s nothing there, try another access. Even if you find little activity, there will still be snook in the first cut before dusk. Also expect to catch jacks and ladyfish. The last time I walked the beach, I caught snook, mackerel, bluefish, blue runners, jack, croaker, ladyfish and a look-down. There were also tarpon, but I had no hook-ups. I kept a few mackerel to eat. The snook come in the shallow water around 6:30 p.m. and stay until after dusk when the bait moves out. Usually snook are right on the shore in the first cut, where waves break on the sand. I use a steady retrieve, since it helps the fish find the lure in the waves. With jigs, I prefer Richard Matteson is a board member for the Stuart Rod and Reel ½ or ¾ ounce with a 30-pound leader. Cast at an angle to cover more Club. Change tactics for a hot bite! Early morning and late evening will be the key to success. Afternoon rains will cool down the atmosphere making your trip more comfortable, but also lowers water temperature a couple degrees triggering bass to feed. Match the hatch – top water, stick baits, lipless crank baits, suspended slash baits, flukes, trick worms, swim baits, Carolina rigged worms, Texas rigged worms, and creature baits are all going to catch fish. You’ve got to throw one of them in the water to get a bite. Bass: Cooler water temps in the morning entice bass to shallow ambush feeding areas; hydrilla edges and lily pads are their hiding places. Points along the river with running water cause bait to be flushed bringing in the schoolies for an evening feed. The springtime panfish and shad hatchlings are now 2-3 inches. Try lures of
Summer is definitely here and the fish know it too. The Kissimmee chain is at low pool and the lakes are slowly filling up due to the summer showers. The Bass bite has been good early morning and late evening. Goblets cove has been really good. Try and beat the heat. Most bass are being caught out in open water vegetation. On West Lake Toho most anglers are using plastics, I have been throwing a June bug or pink trick worm, no weight, working it over vegetation and waiting for that explosive hit. Also try using a Carolina rig with a 1 oz. weight to get thru the vegetation. Folks are having good success trolling live wild shiners up and down the hydrilla patches. East Lake Toho is still one of the better artificial lakes to fish during the summer. Along the northwest shore fish try fish2 ORLANDO

same size: Rattle Traps (chrome), Rapala Countdown, Rapala Shad Rap. Gambler’s EZ swimmer rigged on an eighth ounce weighted hook should produce quality fish along hydrilla edges. Zoom flukes worked as finesse baits cast into the shallows are sure to get strikes. Panfish: Artificial fun with a tried and true Johnson Beetle Spin slowly troll 20-30 feet out from the shoreline or seawall along your favorite stretch of the St. Johns with ultralight spinning tackle. Cast to the bank and retrieve slowly to catch bluegill, shellcracker, and stumpnockers. Bonus fish are largemouth bass, many will be keepers. Catfish: Cooler temps at night make the cats hungry. Circle hooks are great for catfish - the fish hook themselves and most times the hook ends up in the corner of the mouth making hook removal easier when handling these spiny fish. Tip: use just enough weight to hold the bottom and tie the weight 10 inches from the hook.
Winter shrimping ends with full pulls in Volusia and North Brevard County. The hot weather and aggressive mosquitoes are enough reason to hang the nets up. However, reports are coming in for S. Brevard from trappers and Eau Gallie Causeway and Mather’s Bridge - popular hot spots to catch large brown pink and white shrimp. In early June we saw strong yields from land trappers as well as dippers off Mather’s Bridge. Titusville Pier at the Max Brewer Bridge has not conceded the end of the season and still makes the journey of hope on the planks worthwhile. Reports are coming in from Fort DeSoto on the west coast. There the season has started. These are all normal pockets and it confirms our sport continues to be sustainable despite the health of our juvenile nurseries. The million dollar question this month is whether or not S. Dayto-
ing open water peppergrass. You should try a zoom vibe magnum worm, Texas rigged. Swim baits are another good choice. Gambler EZ Swimmer in the Copperfield color likely will get bit. Panfish: Bluegills are spawning in the canals and any place that is sandy and any type of flow near it - bait of choice is crickets. Popping bugs also work well this time of year. Shell crackers are in very shallow water spawning; this info was tipped off by accident running the airboat up skinny. Best bait for the shell cracker is red wigglers. Both can be caught with cane poles or light tackle. Catfish as bycatch is a good thing, try using 8 pound test – it will hold a pretty good sized cat and still be thin enough that the panfish don’t see it. Watch for the afternoon storms and be safe!
na to Flagler see a summer white shrimp run this month. The flotilla will build just north of Dunlawton Bridge in Port Orange. Fall in line with the flotilla that will be cruising between S. Daytona (Big Tree area) between CM 42- CM 51. All eyes will be on Flagler County inter-coastal from CM 7 through 12. Summer shrimping yields higher numbers 3 days before a full, new and blue moons and 2 days after. This is the 5th year rallying hope for the summer shrimp to get back into a summer pattern for quantity and size. Reports are coming in for nice size white shrimp in the Northern St. John’s river. We will be at ICAST July 9-12 showing our 2020 new MacDaddy Aqua SmartIQ “8” mode fishing/ shrimping/camping light at booth 4544 under name Ningbo Top Industry. We have added a nighttime visual distress signal SOS Morse code. We hope to decrease boat accidents during shrimping season for engine failed boats who can use their shrimping light out of water to fire off the SOS signal for help and to avoid collisions. Water levels have ranged between 10 ½ - 11 ft on the big O since early spring time. With the current water level just under 11ft, boating safety is the number one priority. If you’re unsure how to safely navigate on the big O the best thing to do is to hire a fishing guide who knows the entire lake, one who will be completely honest and helpful in sharing the most important features of the lake. The fishing bite consists of mainly bream and bass fishing for this time of year - areas to try for bream have been the North shore area; parts of Observation Shoal; Indian Prairie and on up to Tin house; 2nd/3rd point and parts of Kings bar. The bream can be found on the edges/holes in the grass and boat trails. The bream are biting live crickets and small red worms rigged on ultra-light
The bass bite has been spotty with the better times during the day is early morning and late afternoon timeframe. A mixture of deep water fishing such as in the river and canals have been producing crank bait bites; Carolina rigging and jigs worked up the ledges and around some good chunk rock. The bass have been schooling out in open water on shad throughout various times during the day so have a rattle trap or top water tied on and ready. Other baits that have been producing some good action have been the swim jig; frogs; worms/ senkos and the flipping/pitching bite into thicker grass areas. Capt. ladyfish and smaller sea trout shadow the schools of glass minnows in the deeper water.
The hot summer days have finally arrived, but that doesn’t mean there are no fish around. Try fishing in the early morning, at night, and late afternoons after the thunderstorms dissipate. This can prove to be prudent for successful anglers. In the lagoons, target sea trout and redfish on the flats in areas of mullet schools using top water plugs during the early morning late afternoon hours, and at night. Once the sun grows hot and the top water bite slows, switch to live bait (pigfish) or jigs fished on the deeper edges of the flats or just go home and chill. Also, July and August are the time of year when large schools of
Fishing has been damn good lately. A few mahi have been showing up and a few cobias as well. Most of the mahi, kings and cobia have been on the reefs. Get your live bait and slow troll for them. The bunker has been easy to get lately in the basins. Watch your machines, look for the birds or even easier you can follow the fleet. This is usually the time of year when the fish move in close to the beach. If you’re catching bait close just start fishing outside the pods. Don’t leave fish to find fish. Tarpon and crevales have been around to have some fun with too. At some point later this month expect it to slow down. Why you 6 ORLANDO

Along the beaches, look for silver kings (large tarpon), smoker kings (large kingfish), blacktip sharks, jack crevalle, and redfish to be shadowing pods of pogies (Atlantic menhaden), greenies (thread fin herring), glass minnows (bay anchovies), in close to shore. Also, look for snook fishing in the surf to improve, as we get closer to the commencement of the fall bait run. Remember, snook are out of season, so if you target them, please handle and release them with extreme care. If you do decide to fish during the heat of the day, keep a close eye on the afternoon thunderstorms and stay hydrated.
ask? Every year we have the cold-water upwelling show up and chills the water drastically which usually shuts the bite down. This makes it harder to locate the bait and pushes the fish out of the area till the warm water returns. Check your bottom weights and I’m sure they will be very cold to the touch, somewhere around 50 degrees. If that’s going on then be sure, the bite is gone. Yes, the cobia will show up at some point on those shoals. This is by no means a secret. If a boat happens to spot a fish, let them fish. No need to rush up on them and start throwing your jig over their lines to attempt to catch the fish they spotted. Always have a rod handy with a bucktail jig – add a whole squid for finicky fish. Good luck and have a great July from your premier fishing guide charters of Cocoa Beach Port Canaveral Orlando Florida area.

As settlers moved south following rail roads or creeks, they made their way South into the Kissimmee River Valley. Untamed and wild, the valley was full of wildlife. Panthers, bears, deer and other critters roamed the creeks and marshes just a few miles from where you are reading this. Catfish, bass, perch and gator were plentiful as was turtle, coons and many species of birds. Finding a meal wasn’t usually a chore. Cattle free roamed the land as well and a man could make a pretty good living driving scrub cows to the markets on the west coast. It’s in the spirit of the Florida Cracker that we want to tell you about “A New Steakhouse in Town”. The Steer Pioneer Steakhouse is located at 8015 S. Orange Ave in Orlando. Locally owned by the people who brought you, Fish on Fire, near the Orlando International Airport. The Steer serves their beef proper. Nothing pretentious, easy on the wallet, they boast an ample wine list and serve their beer with a frosted glass. The alligator appetizer is the best alligator dish you will ever have. Alligator sautéed with cream, thyme and garlic served with Cuban toast. Classic Escargot, Citrus Crab Cakes and Shrimp Cocktail round out the appetizers. All the major steak cuts 8 ORLANDO

Surf Expo:
A Best-Kept Secret For Fishing Retailers
T
he world’s largest and longest-running watersports and beach/ resort lifestyle show is a best-kept secret for retailers of fishing apparel and accessories. Surf Expo launched its Bluewater category in January 2018 with some of the hottest brands in fishing. Since then, angling has become an integral part of the twice-annual show, which returns to Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center Sept. 5-7. Savvy buyers will find that today’s Surf Expo is a lot more than surf. Featuring internationally influential brands from all facets of watersports, Surf Expo is the show that drives water-lifestyle trends each season. It is geared toward buyers seeking to stock their shelves, which makes it a unique opportunity for retailers to get ahead of the market’s next big thing. Bluewater is where buyers can find all the freshwater and saltwater fishing and marine lifestyle apparel and accessory brands grouped together in one easy-to-shop area of the show floor. Since Bluewater’s inception, more and more marinas, tackle shops and outfitters have discovered that Surf Expo is a very convenient way to shop all their mainstay apparel and accessory brands and then easily browse other products they need such as sunscreens, sunglasses, coolers, T-shirts and PFDs. Tackle dealers who don’t take advantage of the crossover between fishing and the overall watersports lifestyle are missing out on a powerful revenue stream. Surf Expo is the one show where you can see and touch it all… and attendance is free for qualified retailers. “We’ve been attending Surf Expo for many years,” said Aledia Tush, owner of CB’s Saltwater Outfitters, a fishing and boating landmark in Sarasota since 1959. “We’re always looking for new products, T-shirts, sportswear, suntan products, towels, sandals, shoes and sunglasses. Being a Florida retailer, Surf Expo is a show not to be missed!” Brands exhibiting in the Bluewater category include: HUK, AFTCO, 5Fin, Marsh Wear, Fish Hippie, Hooked Soul Fishing Co., Heybo Outdoors, Salt Life, Big Ocean Sport, Florida Cracker Trading Co, REEL Happy, Deep Blue Gear, Salty Crew, MANG Gear, Sunday
Afternoon, Anglur, Huntworth, Skinny Water Culture, Tormenter Ocean, Costa, Bimini Bay and more. “We’ve been coming to Surf Expo since the beginning, and we were one of the first to be in the Bluewater section—where we’ve found a new home,” said Bill Shedd, president of AFTCO and 5Fin. “There’s a whole lifestyle that’s being developed around saltwater, offshore and big game fishing that’s bled off into inshore fishing and more of an outdoor activity in the broader outdoor world. AFTCO and 5Fin fit into that. Bluewater at Surf Expo is a perfect section to corral up a growing number of brands like AFTCO, 5FIN and Marshwear. The buyers don’t have to walk around looking; we’re in one area.” Surf Expo is a place where it’s easy to get business done. It is a pure, trade-only event, which eliminates the hubbub of open-to-the-public trade shows. It’s also a fun place to be, with a laid-back atmosphere that appeals to those in the watersports industry. The Bluewater Lounge has become a popular hangout for the fishing crowd. Hosted by Hell’s Bay Boatworks, it features happy hours daily and talks with special guests from Captains for Clean Water. Preserving the waters we love has always been an important part of Surf Expo. It is a platform for the watersports industry as a whole to promote clean water, water access, conservation and sustainability. The show’s Learning Lab seminar series features talks dedicated to these topics, and the show’s kickoff event, Waterfest, on Sept. 4, has an overall of theme promoting these values. Waterfest will feature live music, food and beer, plus new products, new brands and on-water demos. “When people come to the Surf Expo for the first time, they notice the relaxed, cool atmosphere. It’s that lifestyle we all buy into, and there are a lot of down-to-earth beautiful people at a surf show,” said Surf Expo Senior Buyer Relations Manager Steven Fisher. “It’s just a great place to be if you’re in the watersports industry. If you’ve got a shop, come check it out for yourself.” For more information or to register now, buyers should visit www.surfexpo.com.

Our Seminole Jr. Anglers Teams had an outstanding 20182019 season! With more top 20 finishes from our teams of anglers than all others in the Central Florida area, congrats to all of the hard work these teams and boat Captains put in to make our program a power-house of those competing in the state wide B.A.S.S and FLW Team events. Having watched this program grow with both numbers of teams and local talent has been nothing short of amazing! Having one of our team’s win the “Team of the Year” is OUTSTANDING and huge for the future growth of our program! It has been an honor to coach and manage this group of young anglers and thanks to all of the support we get from local business owners, parents, boat Captains and product suppliers - we can’t do this without your help and participation. To end the year, the Seminole Junior Anglers joined together to celebrate their awesome season with a fun filled day by the pool. The teams celebrated with a fun cookout and awards were given out for the season. The team of Bryce and Davis DiMauro were awarded with some great Oakley products, including apparel, book bags and sunglasses. The teams are now focusing their efforts on up-coming out of state tournaments. The teams of Dylan Westhelle/Joey Bloom, Noah St. Pierre/ Devin Been, and Bryce DiMauro/Connor DiMauro are all headed to the FLW High School World Finals in Florence, Alabama in June. Later in the summer, Joey Bloom and Dylan Westhelle and Bryce DiMauro and Davis DiMaruo will compete in the B.A.S.S. High School Championship on Kentucky Lake in Paris, Tennessee. We look forward to sharing the outcomes with you as these anglers compete for national championships. Thank you to our season and tournament sponsors, and Instant Insurance in Sorrento, FL for sponsoring this article allowing the accomplishments of this next generation of anglers to be shared with the Central Florida community.

Scurrying for Scallops By Capt Rick Burns
July 1st kicks off the 10-week Scallop season in Florida. It is good fun, a nice way to beat the summer heat and something the whole family can enjoy. And oh yes, the best part, preparing and eating them! There was a time when most of Florida enjoyed Scallop harvesting. I believe one of the main reasons it doesn’t now is because of coastal growth, development and population in other areas of the state which unfortunately brings with it, less habitat and sometimes lesser water quality. The legal Bay Scallop Zone is from the Pasco/Hernando County line north to Mexico Bay Canal in Bay County.

Here are some guidelines to insure a happy trip out for the scallops. First off, it can be quite busy at the ramp, on the river, and out at the picking’ grounds. Please, please remember to be respectful, and cautious when navigating in and around these waters. And no B.W.I’s! Secondly, the season runs from July 1 thru Sept. 24th. Third- the preliminary reports are very good! There are plenty of scallops for adequate collections this season. Legal Requirements: If you’re between 16 and 65, you must have a current saltwater fishing license to harvest scallops. Unless you are fishing (scalloping) with a for-hire vessel – a guide, that has a valid vessel license. And you can check with your marina, but most of them don’t allow rental vessels to go as far out to where the scallop grounds are. Recreational harvesters are limited to 2 gallons of whole bay scallops in the shell, or 1 pint of scallop meat per person, per day. In addition, no more than 10 gallons of whole scallops or ½ gallon of meats may be possessed aboard any vessel at any time. A “diver’s down” flag (20”x24”) must be displayed from your boat when divers are in the water. Law enforcement is concerned about safety and doesn’t play, so don’t forget it, and display it. A mask, snorkel, (fins optional) and a small diver’s mesh bag are all that’s needed. The reason I say fins optional is that most of the time you can find them in water shallow enough you do not need them. Plus, the fin wakes or propulsion can stir up the dust off the grass blades or mud bottom that can make it difficult to see or locate the scallops for a while. Immediately upon returning to the boat with your catch you need to have a cooler waiting with plenty of ice to put the scallops in. Dump them into an empty gallon milk jug with the top cut off first, or something similar to keep your count, then into the cooler of ice. They are fragile, and will die very quickly; however, the ice helps in relaxing the muscle and opening the shell upon cleaning. Remember, keep only what you’re willing to clean that afternoon or evening. So many people get caught up in the collecting, and then don’t want to clean them when the fun is over. When collecting the scallops, search for areas of good sea grass beds, or just look for the fleet armada. The scallops are often in borderline areas where sand/mud bottom meets the edge of grasses. Most of your “Bait and Tackle” stores should carry all the supplies needed. Give them a try. Now go out and enjoy one of Citrus County’s most exclusive opportunities this summer. It’s truly a saltwater Easter egg hunt for scallops in the gulf… Captain Rick Burns can be reached at 352-201-6111 or visit www. homosassafishingguide.com.

FLIPPING FUNDAMENTALS WITH DENNY BRAUER Brauer said. Line is also crucial. Brauer went to work with Seaguar to develop FLIPPIN lines in both braid and fluorocarbon. The braid is available in 50 and 65 pound. “I love to fish the braid down through the heavy cover—matted grass, heavy vegetation, etc. because it’ll cut right through it, you get a great hookset, and there’s no stretch to it,” Brauer said. “So you get a really good hookset and you bury the hook really good.” The fluorocarbon is useful for clear water and isolated cover. It is available in 20-, 25- and 30-pound test.
F
lipping is a must-know bass fishing technique that can put fish in the boat when everything else fails. “Almost every lake has heavy cover, and where do the big bass like to live? They like to live in that heavy cover,” said bass pro Denny Brauer. “Conventional casting techniques often cannot get your bait in there, and if you can get your bait in there, your odds of getting the fish out are pretty slim. That’s where flipping comes into play.” How to Flip Hold your arm straight out and make sure the bait is even with the reel. This gives you about an arm’s length of line that’s easy to work with. Then, swing the bait out, but don’t just let go of the line or you’ll splash the bait into the cover, often spooking the fish. “What you’re trying to do is let the line slide through your hand, bringing your hand back to the reel handle. Now you let your lure fall on just a little bit of slack line, that way the lure will fall straight down into the cover,” Brauer said. “When it hits bottom shake it a couple of times and now is the time to feel it—if it feels heavy or light, you need to set the hook. If not, pull the bait out and flip it into the next good-looking spot and repeat the process.” Flipping Must-Haves When it comes to flipping and pitching, the right equipment is incredibly important. For Brauer, that’s the Lew’s HyperMag Speed Spool SLS. Incredibly light and compact, it has a strong 20-pound drag for hooksets and pulling fish out of cover. It also has a perforated spool so you can tie direct with braid without slippage. He pairs it with a Team Lew’s Speed Stick 7’6” heavy-power Flipping rod. “No matter what baitcasting reel you’re using, make sure you tighten that drag down as much as you can so you can get the hookset and get those fish out of heavy cover. It’s very important to have a reel that’s heavy duty because you’re going to be using a heavy rod and heavy line along with it, and the reel needs to be able to hold up,”
Where to Flip: Pattern Within the Pattern Brauer’s advice is just to get out on the water, target some cover, and wait for that first bite, after which you can work toward discovering what he calls the “pattern within the pattern.” Often he starts flipping boat docks. He fishes each pier, walkway, ladder, rope, boat lift and anything else in the water. Once he gets a bite, he analyses the spot, looking for a pattern. “How deep of water are you sitting in? Is it a gravel bank or a mud bank? Is the dock on a point or back in a pocket? Those fish will tell you a lot if you pay attention,” Brauer said. “Was it on the shallow side of the dock? The deep corner? Was it on the windy side or the calm side? If you’re fishing a river, was it on the up-current side or the down-current side? The details you can pick up go on. And that’s what I call developing the pattern within the pattern.” And when he’s flipping bushes, flooded buck brush, willow trees, cypress knees, etc., he’s constantly trying to figure out what side of the target fish are positioning on. If he can figure out how they’re positioned, he only has to make one flip to the target, which saves time. “Once I’ve narrowed it down to what side the fish will be on— windy, sunny, shady—I then take it one step further,” Brauer said. “When you flip it in there and get that bite, ask yourself did the fish hit it on the drop or after it was on the bottom and was I shaking it up and down? Because if a fish hits on the drop, the fish is aggressive. If he hit it on the drop and your bait hits bottom, there’s no need to sit there and jig it up and down. Hit the next piece of cover.” Conversely, there are times when you might need to jig repeatedly up and down, like after cold fronts or on heavily pressured waters. That might also be part of the “pattern within a pattern” that you discover. Boat Control It’s important to operate with the bow into the wind or current when flipping, operating your trolling motor to work targets efficiently. “That way you can be going the speed you want to rather than the conditions pushing you too fast or slow,” Brauer said. “Also, working into the wind or current allows your boat to fall back when you catch a fish, giving you a second chance to approach the spot for another bite.” Boat control also helps reduce the presence of your shadow in potential fish-holding areas. And, if the water is clear, you might want to back the boat off a bit and make pitches.
RESPECT THE BOAT
Sheri Daye
A
s divers and spearfishers, we usually need boat rides. If you don’t own a boat, and you’re lucky enough to be invited out, you should be aware of ways to respect and protect the owner’s boat. This is important if you want to get invited back. Tips for guests on boats: 1) Space is at a premium. Bring only what you need. 2) The owner works hard to prepare everything else, so you should bring the ice, food and drinks. 3) Ask the boat owner for any special instructions, such as taking off your shoes and where to store equipment. 4) Use tip protectors for spear tips so you don’t scratch anything. Be careful around seat covers or canvas tops with the spear tips. 5) Use boots on your tanks if you’re scuba diving so you don’t scuff the boat. 6) Use caution when handling your weight belt so you don’t ding the gel coat or leave marks anywhere. Consider vinyl-coated or soft weights. 7) Keep your things together, neat and organized, whether in a canvas bag or 5-gallon bucket. Boat owners want a clean boat, so keep the deck from becoming an obstacle course. Stow unnecessary equipment. 8) Mark your equipment with your name so there’s no confusion.

outhwest Florida was ravaged by unprecedented levels of red tide in 2018. An obvious effect of the widespread fish kills was notably poor angling once the red tide had taken root. Food chains collapsed, life was erased in many of our inshore waterways, and anglers were left scratching their heads. Sadly, it will be a while

9) Don’t forget anything and make sure your equipment is in working order. Don’t expect the boat owner to lend you items or to fix your equipment. 10) Look for ways to help the captain without being asked. For example, if there’s fish blood on the deck, spray it off before it dries. 11) Stay with your dive buddy while in the water. It’s stressful for the captain to keep track of divers who get separated. 12) Make sure you stay visible when in the water, whether towing a flag (scuba) or wearing a brightly colored snorkel and making frequent eye contact with the boat (freediving). 13) Learn to drive a boat. Consider taking a safe driving course, and offer to drive. 14) Help pay for gas and be generous. Consider that boat owner costs include maintenance, storage, repairs, insurance and depreciation. 15) Help wash the boat at the end of the day. It’s not nice to leave the boat owner with all the clean up. Tips for boat owners: 1) Give guests a briefing of your boat, safety equipment, emergency procedures, etc. at the beginning of the trip. 2) Install speargun/tank racks to keep equipment stowed and safely out of the way. 3) Use Finholder and More canvas pouches to stow and organize long fins, masks, towels, etc. 4) Set up a 5-gallon mask bucket. Saltwater with baby shampoo words great as a defogger. 5) Get trained on first aid and CPR and carry an O2 kit on the boat. before our bays and creeks are truly healthy again. Hopefully the myriad causes of toxic algal blooms will be addressed during that time. On the positive side of things, this spring and summer will provide fish-starved anglers with a chance to wet their lines in more productive waters. And it doesn’t take a trip offshore or a vacation to make up for last year’s lack of action. Yes, there are fish to be had: trout, snook, tarpon—all the inshore favorites. It all begins with the passes. There is a redeeming quality to the area’s topography. The coastline is blessed with an extraordinary number of passes. Many of our bays still have little or no established food chain. Area flats may be nearly lifeless and grass beds nonexistent. Meanwhile, the passes hold all the ingredients for success. With the need for new bait populations bigger than ever, it is the passes that serve as the conduit to the various inshore habitats along our coast. Seasonal baitfish herds utilize these underwater avenues to complete their annual feeding and spawning patterns. Resident forage species and invertebrates that survived the fatal bloom will be reinforced by their traveling brethren, which must also use the passes to access any of their desired inshore haunts. Mullet, sardines, herring, crabs, squid, shrimp and countless other prey items can be found in and around the swift waters of these marine gateways. The ample food—plus moving water and abundant structure—make the passes more critical than ever for those who seek redemption for last year’s poor fishing. Even before the red tide poisoned the Florida coast, the passes were always hotbeds for gamefish. Now, as we wait patiently for the return to health of our beloved waterways, it is the passes that provide the best shot at a memorable outing. Just be sure to fish responsibly. The environmental balance is currently fickle, and we all must do our part to ensure that the sea remains healthy for future generations of anglers, wildlife enthusiasts and all the marine life that calls this beautiful region home. BRAID OR MONO?
TRY BOTH
ONE OF YOUR BEST DAYS
Photo by Barbara Hodax By Art Hodax
By Chris Beardsley raid or monofilament? It’s an age-old question that continues to be debated and usually one I steer clear of. The decision to use either doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing approach, but more of a compromise. For some, the decision to switch to braid can be attributed to its extremely thin diameter, greater casting distances and durability. Others I’ve spoken with, however, believe monofilament provides the best value and whatever gains are to be had using braid are minimal and negated by the higher cost. With all the information available, from a performance and functional perspective, braid seems to be the obvious choice over mono, but there are exceptions. Braid is much thinner than comparable mono line, allowing for greater spool capacity, and unlike mono, braid virtually eliminates line stretch. The zerostretch quality is especially important for solid hooksets when fishing deep structure or fishing long lines from the surf. Braid’s zero-stretch gives the angler a virtual direct connection to the terminal tackle and along with it, unmatched sensitivity and solid hooksets. As mentioned, a key attribute to braid is its durability and resistance to abrasion. Though braid will fray, unlike damaged monofilament, it maintains much of its structural integrity. That’s not to say you should neglect damaged braid, but it will hold up much better than similarly damaged mono. These are distinct advantages for sure, but a case for mono can be made. I love monofilament for fish finder, Carolina and drop rigs. The extreme suppleness and thread-like flexibility of braid is often considered an advantage, but it also allows currents and tides to tie amazing knots in drop or bottom rigs. The knots take on a life of their own with several wraps around steel leaders, lead weights and hooks. The now-tangled mess usually entails cutting everything off and re-rigging. This scenario is very uncommon using only mono for these same rigs. Countering the zero-stretch of braid is mono’s ability to stretch. Solid hook sets are great, but over-zealous hook sets can result in pulled hooks or break-offs. So, is there a happy medium or compromise? Yes, using a mono top shot is the answer. The top shot consists of a length of mono tied to braid backing. The top shot can range from a few winds around the spool to 200 or 300 yards for extreme trolling situations. For most fishing, however, a few dozen yards (or less) are all that’s required. This combination allows for reels to be spooled with hundreds of yards of braid coupled with a relatively short length of mono leading to the terminal tackle. Since the brunt of abuse is seen by the mono top shot, it’s no longer necessary to replace an entire spool of braid. Simply replacing the top shot as necessary saves time and money. A compromise... maybe? but for all the right reasons this combination is truly the best of both worlds.

ou’ve just bought a boat, and you can’t wait to spend time on it. No doubt you have visions of spending weekends with the family or doing some fishing or enjoying a night on the water away from your daily grind. The day you made that purchase was a day of anticipation and excitement. Then one of your “friends” comes by to say, “The two happiest days in a boaters life are the day he buys and the day he sells!” Rest easy. Your friend couldn’t be more wrong. Having been through the buying and selling process numerous times, I have to admit I was happy to buy them and not unhappy when they sold. But in every case when I sold a boat, it was to make way for the next boat because I love being on the water. The buying and selling days were part of the evolution of our life on the water, but far from our best days of boating. If you’re new to boating, I want to give you some perspective. Have you ever heard someone say, “A bad day on the water is better than a good day in the office?” That’s a cliche just like the “best two days” cliche, but it’s closer to the truth! I wasn’t buying or selling on the many days I spent fishing with my kids or taking my wife and friends for a cruise to nowhere, or rafting up with dockmates for a dinner party and night “on the hook.” I wasn’t buying or selling when we were taking family trips to new harbors, going to bed after sunsets that can only be appreciated over water and waking up (in our own bed) to the most gorgeous of mornings. Yes, there were times we had mechanical problems and had to enlist friends and service people in getting us back on the water. But every one of those events was an opportunity to learn more of the skills that make me feel more competent at maintaining my boats and being prepared for unexpected challenges. Sometimes things are easy and sometimes they’re not so easy, but it’s all part of gaining experience. If it’s any comfort, you’re not alone in your love of boating. According to the National Marine Marketing Association (NMMA), about 275,000 new boats were purchased in 2018 with sales at the highest levels the U.S. recreational boating industry has seen in more than 10 years. Demand is growing for nearly all powerboat segments, including outboard driven boats, which account for 85 percent of new powerboats sold and include everything from pontoons to large center console and cruising boats. Here are more numbers to make it clear you’re not alone in your love of boats... • It’s not just new boats Americans are buying. There were approximately 1 million pre-owned boats (powerboats, personal watercraft and sailboats) sold in 2018. • There are nearly 12 million registered/documented boats in the U.S. • 95 percent of boats on the water (powerboats, personal watercraft and sailboats) in the U.S. are less than 26 feet in length. • It’s not just a rich man’s sport. Sixty two percent of boat owners have a household income less than $100,000. So, if you just purchased a boat, there are a lot of people who understand why you didn’t think the “two best days” joke was that funny. Enjoy your summer, your boat, your family and friends. You have a lot of best days ahead of you.

TIPS FOR THE ATLANTIC RED SNAPPER SEASON
Photo courtesy of Larry McGuire/Show Me The Fish Charters
T
his month’s Atlantic red snapper season is short, so we’re all keeping our fingers crossed for good weather. The snapper are out there, so catching a limit shouldn’t be a problem. The following are some tips from Capt. Greg Rapp on how to maximize your limited time on the water. 1) Have a Game Plan: Plot a course of action. On opening day, the reefs and wrecks will be a zoo. Know where you’re going and have several backups before you head out. 2) Trust Your Bottom Machine: When you arrive, watch your bottom machine for signs of life. If you roll over a wreck or a nice ledge and are not marking life, don’t waste your time fishing it. When a spot has abundant snapper, the machine will light up like a Christmas tree. If you check two or three spots within an area and you don’t mark fish, don’t be afraid to make a significant move. 3) Start Big: Bigger bait equals bigger fish! There are plenty of 20-plus-pound sow snapper ready to engulf a giant live bait. Plus, none of us will be disappointed if we crank up a chunky grouper. This will also result in fewer small fish being reeled to the surface and dying from barotrauma. When targeting big snapper, I use jumbo live pinfish, a big pigfish or large croakers. To properly fish large baits, a sliding sinker rig is the way to go. Start with the smallest egg sinker the current will allow you to get your bait to the bottom with. When it comes to bottom fishing, your main line and leader line should be about the same. Make sure you use a strong hook that you can really pull on without straightening it out. Set your drag to slip just before the breaking strength of the line. After the fish is away from the bottom, back the drag off a little more or at least be sure to lean to the fish when it surges. I can’t tell you how many times I have caught large snapper and grouper that have frayed the line or have come up barely hooked from a ripped lip. If we didn’t lean on the surges, they would have gotten away. 4) When to Lighten Up: If you find yourself on a spot that is marking fish but they are not biting, or you are only catching small snapper, it may be because the spot has already been beat up. It may be time to lighten up and drift down. Capt. Greg Rapp has fished his home waters professionally for more than 20 years and is on the water more than 250 days a year. He owns Sea Leveler Sport Fishing Charters. Contact him at (321) 7943474 or see his website, www.sealeveler.com.
GULF REEF FISH SURVEY SEEKS FISHERY INFO
T
here are several ways you can help FWC improve recreational fisheries data. If you are fishing for red snapper or other reef fish in the Gulf, don’t forget you are required to have Gulf Reef Fish Angler on your fishing license (even for those 65 and older). Gulf reef fish anglers may be selected to receive a fishing survey in the mail. If you receive a survey, please return it to us, even if you didn’t fish for reef fish. The iAngler app, created by the Angler Action Foundation, is also a great way to share information about your catch, whether it is red snapper or red drum. And finally, no matter if you’ve responded to a survey or logged your catch on iAngler, if FWC staff approach you at the dock asking for details about your fishing trip, please share. Your participation helps scientists and managers monitor harvest, assess fisheries and understand more about your experience on the water. For more information, see MyFWC.com and AnglerActionFoundation.com.

Florida Angler Achieves 50-Fish Milestone Allision Stattner’s big wahoo was the 50th species caught on her Saltwater Fish Life List.
A
llison Stattner is an accomplished angler. She has a pending 130.2-pound tarpon world record on fly and is featured in the new book “Fifty Women Who Fish.” Recently, she added another accomplishment to her list by becoming the first—and only—angler to join FWC’s 50-Fish Club. The milestone recognizes an astounding number of fish species Stattner has checked off in her Saltwater Fish Life List.
“Reaching the 50-Fish Club was definitely a fun challenge!” said Stattner. “I had to take into account seasonality, location within Florida, varied baits and, most importantly, log a lot of time on the water. Some of my catches were from the beach, pier, kayak and offshore headboats. Thank you to FWC and the sponsors of the Catch a Florida Memory program for recognizing angler accomplishments and encouraging me to be a better angler!” Stattner rounded out her Life List achievement with a whopping 42-inch wahoo as her 50th fish. She chose to memorialize the catch in a replica mount she’ll receive as a prize from Mount This! Fish Company. While her enthusiasm for spending time on the water is clear, she is equally passionate about teaching younger generations how to fish, including her own daughter who is a Life List 10-Fish Club member. Want to get in on the action? You can win a replica fish mount from Mount This! Fish Company when you submit catches by July 31 and are the first angler to qualify for the Reefs and Rubble Grand Slam (gag, gray triggerfish and black sea bass all caught in 24 hours) or the angler whose Reel Big Fish most exceeds its qualifying length. Plus, Catch a Florida Memory is teaming up with events like the Pensacola Fishing Rodeo and Lake Worth Lagoon Fishing Challenge to give you even more to chances to win. Grab your friends and family for some fishing fun, make some memories and win a few prizes while you’re at it. Catch a Florida Memory challenges anglers to target a diverse range of species in Florida, reducing pressure on the most commonly sought-after catches. Successful anglers receive a prize pack including a T-shirt, certificate and tumbler, and the prizes get hotter from there. Participate today by visiting CatchaFloridaMemory. com. Anglers do not have to harvest their fish to be eligible for prizes and are encouraged to use proper fish handling techniques. don’t want to sound like I disapprove of harvesting fish, but we should all do our best to use fish as a sustainable form of entertainment and food. De-hookers and barbless or circle hooks minimize the time trauma for fish at boatside. I catch quite a few fish I want to release as healthy as possible due to size, creel limits and seasons, as well as fish that are heavy with roe. There are many ways to accomplish the release without ever touching the fish at all. A quality de-hooker with a T handle provides full control of the fish and hook when using barbless circle hooks. With quite a few species, dozens of fish are caught per trip, and being able to take care of the smaller fish helps those fish survive to sexual maturity. Hopefully they’ll have at least one successful spawn, which ensures the future fishery. There are other species like speckled trout that are effortless to release with a barbless jig hook. You can simply give trout slack line at the boat, and they will release themselves. Or just grab the jig head and barely push backward, allowing the trout to swim away without ever being touched. Too may times, I’ve seen young or uninformed anglers struggle with fish at boatside. It’s even worse when a fish intended for release is hooked deep with a barbed jig or J hook. I try to be courteous and inform the angler on how to use the de-hooker and/or barbless hooks in the future. Another way to reduce the possibility of deep hooking is to use more soft plastic baits. I’ve found that Gulp! baits work great with circle hooks, as well. Because they are impregnated with scent, fish tend to keep Gulp! baits in their mouths much longer than standard soft plastics. I’ve found that using Pro Cure Shrimp flavor on my soft plastic shrimp jigs has a similar effect. All fish have great senses of smell and taste, and a bag of soft plastic baits typically smells or tastes like… plastic. This is the reason Pro Cure Shrimp is a no-brainer. Everything in the water eats a shrimp. I typically keep a shrimp tied on the jig rod, and a shrimp on the cork rod. Speaking of smell and taste, if you smoke, consider how the smell of cigarettes on you hands affects the smell of the soft plastics you use. In closing, I’d like to encourage all the parents and role models out there to set a good example of how to properly release fish and how to use all the tools available to release fish as healthy as possible. Make your own videos to inform friends about how to accomplish this, or share some of my videos. To see my videos, go to www.barefootcatsandtackle.com. NEW RULES FOR SURF SHARKS
S
hore-based shark fishing is undergoing some changes in Florida. Effective July 1, FWC regulations changes are intended to increase survival of released sharks, improve information gathering for the fishery and address public safety concerns. The rule changes include: Photo • Creating a mandatory, nocourtesy cost, annual shore-based shark of Chris fishing permit. This permit is reBeardsley quired for all shore-based shark anglers age 16 and older, including those 65 and older who are normally exempt from needing a fishing license. • Requiring those under 16 to take the educational requirement associated with the permit unless they are fishing with an adult who already holds the permit. • Prohibiting chumming when fishing for any species from the beach. • Requiring immediate release of prohibited shark species when fishing from the shore. Anglers are required to cut the leader, line or hook to prevent delaying release of prohibited species. • Requiring that prohibited shark species remain in the water when fishing from shore or from a vessel. • Requiring the use of non-offset, non-stainless-steel circle hooks to target or harvest sharks when using live or dead natural bait when fishing from shore and from a vessel. • Requiring the possession/use of a device capable of quickly cutting the leader or hook when targeting sharks when fishing from shore or a vessel. • Defining beach, chumming and shore-based shark fisher. This includes changes to how shore-based shark fisher is defined.

Yamaha Goes Big With Their New 19-foot Center Console When Yamaha Boats entered the center console category in 2015 with their first gen 19-foot 190 FSH, skeptics questioned if Yamaha could compete in the segment in the same way the “Rev Your Heart” brand dominates the 19-foot, 21-foot, and 24-foot bowrider category. Just three years later, Yamaha clapped back by winning Boating Magazine’s coveted Boat of the Year honor with their 21-foot 210 FSH. For 2019, Yamaha upped the ante with a complete refresh of the 190 FSH Series. Yamaha’s 19’ center console boats return with an all-new deck and hull design that is 3 inches longer and 2 inches wider than previous year models. With the added space, Yamaha engineers increased storage capacity and improved overall functionality. From bow to stern, there is not another 19’ center console boat as spacious or more comfortable. Under the waterline, the longer, wider hull is designed for added comfort too, favoring characteristics that reduce bow rise when accelerating and hull packing when operating in choppy water conditions. Another significant improvement included on all Yamaha boats for 2019 is a new V-shaped reverse bucket that enhances handling when in reverse, a redesigned Articulating Keel that reduces drag, and a new compliment of corrosion resistance measures to protect the jet pump and surrounding driveline parts. The new V-Bucket works by diverting water thrust laterally (not down) to take advantage of the benefits of side thrust. The redesigned Articulating Keel is thinner and with tighter tolerances to reduce drag while maintaining all its low-speed handling benefits. And to increase corrosion resistance to the jet pump and surrounding driveline parts, a three-step process that combines Alumite, a ceramic coating, and expoxy paint has been added. Most Usable Deck Layout Ever in a 19’ Center Console Starting at the bow, the storage compartments are larger and open wider than
before. To help keep tackle and other essentials organized, Plano storage trays are integrated into the new portside mini-pod storage compartment, and on the starboard side, the mini pod opens into a huge storage area. These padded mini pods also serve as convenient ingress and egress points. The bow platform is wider than previous models, and the bow platform hatch is wider too, providing better access and more light for stowing or retrieving gear. The bench seat and front of the center console lifts up to reveal an extra deep, large storage area that can also serve as a changing room or head compartment, thanks to the curtain enclosure included on Deluxe and Sport models. The entryway to this compartment is redesigned to make ingress and egress easier. This compartment can also store equipment and recreational items and offers convenient access to the backside of the helm for easy service and installation of aftermarket marine electronics. On the sides of the center console are six vertical rod holders, three on each side. Four additional rod holders are located under the gunnels on the port and starboard sides. With the addition of four flush-mount rod holders on the deck, there are 14 rod holders across the boat. The Sport version adds four more rocket launchers on the T-top. The helm is thoughtfully designed with a simple-to-remove windshield for low profile storage, a stainless steel sports steering wheel, easy access to all boat control switches, a locking glove box and an open area to flush mount electronics such as a fishfinder, GPS unit, and other marine electronics. Also included is Yamaha’s 4.3” touchscreen Connext control system featuring a brand-new user interface in 2019, and conveniently-placed rocker switches for Yamaha’s No Wake Mode and Cruise Assist, along with bilge, horn and other vital functions.

FISH & FISHING
SINKER SENSE
MARK SOSIN
P
resentation holds the key to catching fish. That cardinal rule proves just as valid for critters that hunker down on the sea floor as it does for more glamorous denizens in the upper level of the water column. If a bait isn’t in the zone where the fish happen to be or if it doesn’t behave in a natural and realistic manner, it will be ignored. Sinkers are a vital aspect of fishing success. Their mission goes well beyond the task of simply dragging a bait to the bottom or some midpoint in the water column. View them as part of the total presentation package. That includes such factors as sink rate, whether it anchors a bait or allows it to drift, and as an aid in casting. If you’re going to troll, sinkers help to adjust the depth at which each bait or lure is moving through the water. With very few exceptions, select the lightest sinker that will carry your offering to the bottom or the desired depth. Don’t assume that if 1 ounce does the job, 2 ounces are better. Not only do heavier weights keep the bait or lure from looking like a tempting morsel, they make the hook-up process more difficult. Remember that when an unsuspecting fish inhales an offering, it must drag the sinker along before the hook will embed in its jaw. Line diameter plays a major role in determining the weight of the sinker you will need. Generally, the finer the diameter of the line you are using, the less weight you need to achieve the same results in a given situation. As an example, the bottom bouncer who insists on using 30-pound test line needs a heavier sinker than someone using 20-pound test. Sinker shape helps to determine sink rate. The fastest, freefalling sinkers have the weight concentrated at the bottom, tend to be very compact and are streamlined. It’s important to note, however, that fast-falling sinkers have a tendency to cause the
hook and tag end of the leader to wrap around the standing part during the drop. In most situations, it proves more effective if the sinker will drift across the bottom rather than anchor the rig in one place. If you’re trolling, sinker choice should include enough weight to keep the bait or lure at the preferred depth. No assortment of sinkers is complete without split shots, bullet weights, pinch-ons, and twist-ons. These can be added very easily to make minor adjustments to the weight of the primary sinker. Sinkers come in many different shapes, and each shape has a specific purpose. It’s important to choose a shape designed to do the job you expect. The right sinker for the task at hand will increase your catch rate significantly, and that’s the easiest way to turn an average day on the water into a memorable one.

he much -anticipated red snapper season in the south Atlantic waters of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida opens in July. Based on Photo courtesy of Miss Judy Charters, landings from www.missjudycharters.com last year’s six-day season, the limited opening has been cut to just five days for 2019. Anglers will be sure to have plenty of company on the reefs, as everyone scrambles to get in on their share of the action. The bag limit is one red snapper per person, per day, and captains and crews of for-hire vessels may retain the recreational bag limit. There is no minimum or maximum size limit. Harvest will be allowed on the following days: • July 12, 13 and 14 (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) – The recreational season opens at 12:01 a.m., local time, on July 12 and closes at 12:01 a.m., local time, on July 15. • July 19 and 20 (Friday and Saturday) – The recreational season opens again at 12:01 a.m., local time, on July 19 and closes at 12:01 a.m., local time, on July 21.

Reduce Mortality Of Released Bycatch
s responsible anglers, we want to do everything we can to return bycatch safely. Anyone who’s fished bottoms deeper than 30 feet has probably experienced the “floating fish syndrome.” This is caused by barotrauma, an expansion of the fish’s air bladder as they are brought up from depth. Signs of barotrauma include eyes popping, stomach extending out of the mouth, intestines extending out of the anus and bloating. These fish will not be able to descend upon release and are subject to predation. Thanks to a NOAA grant, the South Carolina Wildlife Federation has partnered with the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council to develop an interactive online tutorial detailing fish-handling and release techniques
that give fish the best chance of survival. In 2018, anglers fishing waters of the Atlantic from North Carolina to Florida released more than 2 million red snapper. Even a 5 percent increase in survivorship would save 100,000 red snapper a year. All those surviving fish would remain in the stock. The South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council includes bycatch mortality as part of their population estimates that determine seasons and catch limits. Best fishing practices detailed in the tutorial are a great way of reducing mortality, which means there will be more fish in the water for future fishing opportunities. Take the online tutorial and enhance your future fishing opportunities at: https://safmc. net/bestpracticestutorial/story_ html5.html. Complete the tutorial (about 20 minutes) and sign the pledge to be eligible for a free SeaQualizer descending device of you fish the South Atlantic.

MONSTER BROWN CAUGHT ON WHITE RIVER
Y
ou don’t see a brown trout like this one every day. This massive and battle-scarred bruiser was caught and released by Paden Flippen on Arkansas’ White River below Bull Shoals Dam on June 14. The 36.7-pound monster was a fitting present for the angler, who celebrated his 24th birthday that day. The White River is well known for producing gigantic trout. This system of hatchery-supported tailwaters has the food sources and habitat for rainbow, brown, brook and even cutthroat trout to reach almost unbelievable sizes. Flippin guides for Cotter Trout Dock and said he and other guides had been tracking this big brown for more than a year. If he had decided to keep it for certification, Flippen’s big trout would have fallen just shy of the state record, which is held by a 40-pound, 4-ounce beast that was caught from the Little Red River back in 1992. That fish, caught by Rip Collins, was the world record up until 2013, when an angler in New Zealand caught a 42-pound, 1-ounce brown trout.

few inches until it can deliver the fly ever so softly. Always carry extra spools of leader material to meet this problem. Once again, your leader length is often determined by the fishing conditions. If the wind is howling and you are having a difficult time rolling over your fly, shorten the leader. If conditions are glass-slick, the fish will be spooky. You will need a much longer cast, so lengthen your leader and reduce the size and weight of your fly.
THE BASIC SALTWATER LEADER: THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT The leader is the connection between fisherman and fish. If tied incorrectly, not only will it be difficult to cast, it will also be responsible for losing saltwater gamefish. I prefer a 9-foot leader when fishing saltwater, although there are occasions when a 10-foot leader is needed. A good leader can turn over the large, heavy flies used in saltwater fly fishing. I will often start my day with a longer leader, and reduce its length depending on the demands of weather conditions and efficiency in properly delivering the fly. The leader is a simple equation: 4x3x2. I have found this the preferred method to construct a solid saltwater leader: • 4 feet of 40-pound stiff mono; • 3 feet of 30-pound mono, and • 2 feet of 20-pound mono. This system works well with lighter tippets as well. If I need to add a lighter tippet, I shorten the heavy 40-pound butt section to keep the overall leader length 9 feet, adding the light tippet to the 20-pound test on the fly end of the leader. How the fly lands on the water is important. You want the fly to land as softly as a whisper. If, however, your leader is too long, a heavy fly will hit the water as loudly as a thrown rock. The noise will alert every fish in the vicinity. I usually solve this problem by shortening the leader and cutting off a
There are times when a shorter leader is needed. The short leader makes it easier to cast a heavy fly into the wind. I will often shorten leaders to fewer than 7 feet when dealing with very strong winds. It’s good to remember that shallow-water fish are less spooky under windy conditions. Therefore, they will often swim within close range of the angler without being spooked. I believe the wind and the distortion it creates on the water’s surface acts as a barrier to the world above the surface, making the fish feel more secure. I’ve witnessed this on many occasions when tarpon, redfish and permit swim within a rod’s length of me while the wind was blowing 20 knots.

BOJO FISHLIGHT
T
he BoJo Fishlight is no ordinary fishlight. The unique design feeds your fish by actually knocking bugs into the water… still alive! The unit has two fluorescent bulbs that attract bugs to the device. Once bugs come to the light, an electric motor with weed-eatertype cord blades knocks the bugs into the water where fish eat them all night long. The Bo-Jo Fishlight works great on fresh or saltwater, on ocean docks, large lakes and equally well—if not better—on small ponds. Basic fishing rules apply
here. Bugs come to the light; bugs get knocked in the water; baitfish feed on bugs; big fish feed on baitfish; you catch the big fish! The device mounts on a post, dock, pier or boat house and is simple to install. These durable dock lights also give you illumination to enjoy nighttime activities and cost less than a nickel a night to operate. This incredible device feeds fish for free and will actually pay for itself in the first year alone. Compare with the cost of expensive mechanical fish feeders that spread pellet feed, and you’ll save big money. Learn more at bo-jofishlight. com or call 478-951-1490. Watch a short video at https://bo-jofishlight.com or click on the barcode.

n May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted, sending a column of ash and smoke 80,000 feet into the atmosphere. From that chaos, something beautiful emerged—our spectacular Spirit Lake Helenite Ring.
jewelry. “It’s just recently that luxury jewelers have fallen in love with helenite,” says James Fent, GIA Graduate Gemologist. “Clear green color in a stone this size is rarely found in emeralds but helenite has come to the rescue.”
Created from the superheated volcanic rock dust of the historic Mount St. Helens eruption, helenite has become the green stone of choice for jewelry and fashion designers worldwide. Helenite’s vivid color and immaculate clarity rivals mined emeralds that can sell for as much as $3,000 per carat. Today you can wear this 4-carat stunner for only $99!
Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed. Bring home the Spirit Lake Helenite Ring and see for yourself. If you are not completely blown away by the exceptional beauty of this rare American stone, simply return the ring within 30 days for a full refund of your purchase price. It’s that simple. But we’re betting that once you slide this gorgeous green beauty on your finger, it will take a force of nature to get you two apart!
