Bimini Bay Sets A New Standard With BloodGuard Apparel By CAM Staff

F

Bay an industry leader in today’s outdoor apparel industry. Always in the forefront of new fabric technology, Bimini Bay has also been a manufacturing leader in creating moisture management systems. Their shirts are engineered to keep the body comfortable and dry by drawing moisture to the fabric’s surface (wicking) where it can quickly evaporate. Now, with the introduction of their BloodGuard line, they have set a new standard in the industry. Try one of these new BloodGuard shirts for yourself. Blood washes right off with only water. No more bringing detergents or peroxide on the boat or dock to spare your favorite fishing shirt. Designed and tested in the field with real anglers, this new line of outdoor apparel is destined to set a new standard in the industry.

For more information on this exicting new line of outdoor apparel visit www.biminibayoutfitters.com. Check out BloodGuard in action in a video at https:// www.bloodguard.org/.

Living The T

he origins of Salt Life are pure. With two simple words in a scrawling font, the iconic brand began as a tattoo inked on the backs of a couple of surfing fishermen in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. Four hard-core watermen began grassroots promotion of the design in 2003, selling bumper stickers and T-shirts. During the humble early years, no one foresaw the eventual scope of the worldwide phenomenon they had launched. Salt Life has come to represent everything everyone loves about the ocean. At a glance, the now-familiar logo proudly displays a love of the saltwater lifestyle. Fisherman and diver Jeff Stillwell, who just happens to be president of Salt Life, said he is blessed to be part of the phenomenon. “Whatever attracts you to the water, Salt Life represents that,” he said. “If you happen to love to fish, it means fishing to you. I happen to be an avid diver. It means diving to me. If you’re a surfer, it means surfing. If you just like hanging out on the beach and enjoying a cold beverage, it means that.” No longer just T-shirts and decals, Salt Life has grown to include a huge assortment of gear and apparel. Two concepts accompany all their offerings. The first holds true to the original message, a devotion to the coastal lifestyle and its fashions. The second builds on those roots by coupling fashion with performance in gear and apparel that helps customers better enjoy water-based activities. From high-performance sunglasses, featuring the best Zeiss polarized lenses, to technical clothing for fishing, surfing, diving, paddleboarding and beach-sitting, Salt Life has you covered. Stillwell mentioned Salt Life’s new Fusion Performance Pocket Fishing Shirts as an example of innovative design that will appeal to anglers. It’s got UV30 sun protection and ventilation, and it’s got something else you won’t find on other fishing shirts. “It really came upon me sitting on the back of a boat, fishing a tournament,” Stillwell said. “Every time that reel goes off, you start looking for things. I don’t know why no one has ever done this, but we took one of these high-performance shirts and put pockets on the back of it. When that reel goes off, I don’t have to look for gloves or a pair of pliers. Whatever I need, I’ve got it right there with me. ’Cause once I get in that chair, I’m going to be there for a while.” Only an angler would recognize the need for this kind of design, and it’s this kind of innovation that has made Salt Life a lot more than just a cool logo. Stillwell said they’ve got a line of waterproof gear on the horizon, and he’s excited about the territory expansion of Salt Life Lager. Yep… Salt Life launched an easy-drinking beer to celebrate its 15th anniversary in 2018. “It goes hand-in-hand with our lifestyle,” Stillwell said. “We’re all out there on the water for a great fun-filled day in the sun, and at the end of the day our customer loves to kick back, as do I, with a nice cold beer.” But all the fun, and all the success, comes with responsibility. Without healthy oceans to play in, there would be no Salt Life. The company has joined with conservation organizations like Artificial Reefs International and Roatan Marine Park in protecting and enhancing the resources so that future generations can enjoy living the Salt Life.

Poncho: “The World’s Best Fishing Shirt.” Poncho is a new company that makes just one thing: a fishing shirt. We like that focus. Poncho calls their shirt “The World’s Best Fishing Shirt.” We’re impressed with the fast-drying fabric and innovative magnetic pocket flaps, which you can easily open with one hand. Smart details like a built-in eyeglass cleaner, slot to hang your sunglasses, roll-up sleeve tabs, and hidden zipper pocket will make anglers happy. They even go the extra mile by offering both relaxed and slim sizes. Poncho founder Clay Spencer grew up fishing the humid Texas coast. He’s also a former Alaskan fly fishing guide, so he knows a thing or two about extreme conditions. Clay said, “I made the Poncho shirt for guys who are serious about being comfortable on the water and don’t want a bunch of gimmicks. I cut the velcro, loops and baggy pockets. This shirt is made to have everything you need—and nothing you don’t.” Get a free hat with purchase of a shirt with code COASTALMAG. Gillz Apparel –

By Anglers For Anglers

G

illz was started by a passionate angler, an angler driven by the need for one thing—performance. It’s evident in the style and quality of the Gillz brand. Started back in 2009, the idea was to design the perfect fishing shirt that would be lightweight, soft, comfortable and protective. This led to the first innovation – Cross Breeze Ventilation, which consisted of mesh panels under the arms and down the sides of the body. This allowed airflow through and under the shirt, making it even cooler and more comfortable. Other innovations followed, like a vented mask with “gills” for ventilation. This radical mask design offered unparalleled cooling and comfort. The technological innovations kept coming, and Gillz introduced CoolCore technology. CoolCore is a redesign of the actual structure of the fabric to make it cooler. Unlike most companies that simply apply a chemical to their fabric, which can wear off after repeated use and washings, CoolCore is a natural, chemical-free way to cool—up to 30 percent cooler than competitors. In addition, Gillz shirts are non-clinging and non-saturating. They wick sweat away from the body and offer UPF+50 sun protection. Gillz is designed for the passionate angler, the recreational fisherman, or anyone who lives an active outdoor lifestyle. The brand has grown from one innovative fishing shirt to a full apparel line. From tees, to high-performance shirts, to hats, to masks, sunglasses and hoodies, Gillz makes gear for every condition. Designs and patterns are constantly being updated, but the focus on performance is always a constant. Gillz considers making the most comfortable fishing shirt in the world an ongoing process, so innovation will always be of paramount importance. Gillz has come a long way from just making a simple fishing shirt. For more information, visit gillz-gear.com.

Center sp A Badge of Honor

O

ld Guys Rule was created to embrace a new breed of guys who have incredible energy, passion for life, wisdom gained from years of experience and the time to spend doing the activities they enjoy. Old Guys Rule gear should be worn as a badge of honor for a life well-spent, but not nearly over. Let’s face it, in today’s society if you’re over 40, you’re considered old. Old Guys Rule makes the statement: “So what?” We’re still having fun, still doing what we enjoy and, oh by the way, we’re in control. Don’t let the rest of the world try to tell you anything different. Old guys rule! Founder Don Craig brought the Old Guys Rule concept to the California surfing community in 2003. Its popularity quickly spread to include numerous genres and recreational pursuits. Now anglers can make their statement as well through a series of nine angler-themed shirts including bass, mahi, tuna and marlin. No matter where or how you fish, let the world know “You Rule.” For more information on Old Guys Rule offerings, visit http://oldguysrule.fishing or call 866-465-9640.

MARCH 2019

rom my perch atop a pile of boulders, I faced directly into a stiff northeast wind and its attendant waves. I stood with dubious footing as the swirling elements riled the air and water around me. There was seemingly no reason for me or anyone else to fish this particular spot at this particular time, but I had a hunch. Several yards seaward from where I balanced among the loose stones, the shallow bottom sloped to a depth of about 8 feet. The submerged valley was fed by a newly dropping tide. The wind and waves, working to oppose the falling water, stirred the seas over the basin into a strip of foaming turbulence. With tide pushing baitfish into the depression—and the churning water pinning them there—an ideal ambush situation was created for any nearby snook craving an easy meal. For weeks, the wind had blown steadily from the east and southeast. When a forceful northeast blow ensued, I anticipated predatory activity. Consecutive days featuring gusts of up to 25 mph compelled me to abandon my usual bridge fishing to capitalize on the shifting atmospheric conditions. Mindful of the wind’s ability to influence the location of baitfish schools, my instincts drew me to this boulder-capped point of land protruding from the river’s western bank. Few creatures in the diet of gamefish wear chartreuse or anything remotely similar to the flamboyant shade of green. Any critter dressed in such gaudy fashion would be doomed immediately to the stomach of a predator. So, when my chartreuse jig entered the tempestuous waters of the drop-off, it was snapped up instantly by a 26-inch snook. Not long after releasing the fish, underwater visibility proved to be of no significance on this occasion. When I switched to a less noticeable variety of lure, the snook continued their assault and hit almost everything I threw at them for the next four nights. Throughout the feed, I had the setting entirely to myself; the fish were in an aggressive mood all the while—a product of the same natural forces that guided me to their location with such timeliness. The most interesting part of the affair was that the feeding, in spite of its furor, existed for only a short period of the outgoing tide each night. The snook, most of which were in the high 20-inch range, abandoned their tactics when the wind shifted back to its more regular southeastern origin. As the tide progressed in its unremitting cycle, the frenzy of action concluded—to resume in another place on a different breath of wind and a different stage of the tide. alt air and saltwater can restore the body and the soul, sometimes literally. This is a story about a unique ocean voyage that has a berth waiting for you. Travis Suit’s inspiration for standup paddling from the Bahamas to Florida is his daughter Piper, who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when she was four. “CF” is a progressive genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time (www.pipersangels.org). When Travis learned that saltwater could be very beneficial in alleviating the symptoms of CF, he immersed Piper in saltwater activities and became inspired to create an oceanbased event that could raise awareness and funds to help CF patients everywhere. Thus was born the Crossing For A Cure. Travis made his first crossing from the Bahamas to Florida in 2013 with three stalwart friends who traversed 90 miles after paddling continuously for 15 hours. They came to be known as “Piper’s Angels.” Since then, their ranks have grown to include hundreds of inspired paddlers, dedicated volunteers and generous sponsors who work together to support and improve the lives of families in the cystic fibrosis community by raising awareness, offering life-expanding activities and providing urgent financial support through the Piper’s Angels Foundation. This year’s journey from Bimini to Florida is scheduled for June 15, and opportunities for you to become part of the Crossing abound. The event is open to standup or prone boards, surf skis, outrigger canoes and dories, with a potential of $88,000 in cash purses for the competitive categories. You can paddle as a competitor or a recreational relay member, or sponsor a paddler, a team or the Foundation in any amount. The Crossing crew is actively seeking support vessels and captains (offering lodging and fuel stipends), and looking for volunteers to assist at the Lake Worth Beach landing. Join or follow the adventure, and learn how the foundation’s “Salt Supply” program is connecting saltwater-based vendors and guides with CF patients. For more information, see www.crossingforacure.com/ and www.facebook.com/CrossingForACure/.

f all the animals a diver might encounter, the octopus most easily qualifies as a creature from outer space. But, despite their eight arms, three hearts, nine brains and blue blood, octopuses really do have an earthly lineage. They are a mollusk (think oysters and conchs), but gave up their shells around 400 million years ago. In that time, nature has figured out some strange but effective ways for this animal to eat without being eaten. Dispensing with its shell gave the octopus flexibility and mobility. To take advantage of their mobility, the octopus features eight flexible, sucker-equipped arms. With these arms octopuses can pull themselves in any direction over the ocean bottom or swim through open water. For real emergencies, they can squirt a blast of water from their siphon for a jet-propelled take-off. Just about every part of an octopus except its beak and eyes can flow like Silly Putty. Consequently, an octopus can work its way through just about any opening it can get its beak through. That means an octopus has lots of places to hide.

12

FLORIDA

CANGL_FL1-FL24.indd 12

MARCH 2019

Octopuses have turned hiding into an art form. Their skin contains millions of chromatophores—cells that contain red, orange, yellow, brown or black pigment. Each cell can be individually expanded or contracted to show or hide color and change the texture of their skin. This allows the octopus to match its surroundings in a fraction of a second as it moves. The most alien characteristic of octopuses is probably their eight arms. Each arm has double rows of suckers that not only grasp, but also taste. As an octopus hunts the ocean bottom, the arms independently probe cracks and crevices in search of prey. If it appears those arms have minds of their own, they do. While an octopus has about 500 million neurons, only about a third of them form the central brain. The remaining two-thirds are equally divided among the eight arms, putting them where they can most efficiently interact with those myriad muscles, sensors and chromatophores. So where does a diver go to encounter these amazing animals? My favorite local spot is the Blue Heron Bridge. Octopus studies at the site, led by local researcher Chelsea Bennett, have found common octopus, the Atlantic longarm octopus, Caribbean two-spot, Caribbean reef, pygmy and brownstriped octopuses there. Since octopuses are so good at hiding, Chelsea offered advice from her many hours of octopus observation. “The common and the longarm octopuses are generally found in high densities at the east and west end of BHB (typically just south of the bridges). I call these species underwater neighbors because they are both found in same areas but can coexist because they are associated with different substrates. The common octopus lives in hard-bottom areas (rock, rubble, shell) and the Atlantic longarm in sandy plains.” Pura Vida Divers is featuring Blue Heron Bridge Diver specialty courses throughout the month of March. You’ll learn to navigate the site, identify wildlife and recognize indicators of dens for animals like octopuses. Sign up for an upcoming class by calling 561-8408750.

e’ve all seen the red tide events that hammer fish on Florida’s Gulf Coast. In February, stockings of redfish began to ease the pain of fish kills on resident populations. Duke Energy, FWC and CCA Florida began the release of more than 16,000 juvenile and adult redfish in southwest Florida counties. The program was announced in fall of 2018, and includes donation of the hatchery-reared redfish from the Duke Energy Mariculture Center in Crystal River, Fla. Each of five releases include about 2,000 juvenile fish and 25 to 30 adult redfish. Stockings were scheduled for Pasco County, Hillsborough County, Sarasota and Charlotte counties, Lee and Collier counties and Manatee County. “We’re extremely excited to begin releasing these fish now that the waters are determined to be safe,” said Brian Gorski, CCA Florida Executive Director. “Between these releases, encouraging anglers to catch-and-release and promoting conservation, we’re going to see this fishery improve, and we’re honored to be a part of it.” Anglers can become engaged by joining CCA Florida at JoinCCA. org.

elcome to the challenge of spring fishing. I know a lot of people struggle to consistently pattern fish in the month of March, so I have put together a few key points that should help out. Although the days may warm up considerably, the

CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 2

water can still stay chilly. The continuation of passing fronts can drop the water temperature quite quickly as it struggles to climb up the thermometer, keeping fish less aggressive. In March, I still hold onto some of the same structure I key on in the coldest months. Although I may start to mix in more shell and grass into my target areas, one thing that needs to remain from the cold weather handbook is quick and easy access to deeper water. With frequent cold fronts, although they may not have the same punch, the fish will still look to retreat to more stable water temps in the depths of a general area. The warmer and sunnier the day, the farther the fish will stray from that deep-water access, but they will not completely abandon its safety. I like to focus on the outer edge of the guts that lead from deeper water to the flats early, and I’ll follow them up on the flat as the day warms. With the fronts comes dreaded high pressure! Here are a couple tactics I rely on in this situation. First, and typically the most productive, is to downsize your lure. This is especially true in the spring when forage is young. I also like to go with a natural or translucent color patterns for a more natural approach. I tend to slow down and work lures closer to the bottom, as well, when the barometer is on the rise. My next approach, when nothing is working in a high barometer setting, is to do something completely opposite of what I just recommended. When all else fails, I tie on a very noisy lure that creates a lot of water displacement. This could be a noisy topwater, a noisy rattling lure or a lipped crankbait-style plug. At this stage, I am just looking for a reaction bite. If I can aggravate them enough, they just might take the bait. Although these techniques are polar opposites, I find the fish to be on one end of the spectrum or the other when dealing with high pressure. You just need to experiment and figure them out. Get out and enjoy the weather, and remember to take a kid fishing! Capt. Michael Okruhlik is the inventor of Controlled Descent Lures and the owner of www.MyCoastOutdoors.com.

March is a Carolina rigged soft plastic worm or lizard. (Carolina Rig: pin a quarter ounce weight 15-18 inches above the worm – so the weight goes thru the grass and the worm is still exposed) March freshwater fishing trips will be rewarded with many different species like largemouth bass, sunshine bass (hybrid stripers), catfish, bluegill, shell cracker, crappie, shad, tilapia and mullet. A good way to tell when a weather change signals a fishing season is orange blossoms means bluegills are on. Go cat-fishing a day after the rain, and fish near moving water along a dropoff or in a deep river bend. Bass are usually active before and during the rain. Largemouth bass will be halfway or more into their spawn. Use baits that imitate critters who steal their eggs - salamanders, craw fish, bluegills, and shiners. Try a Rattle Trap type lure in a fan cast pattern to find fish. The bass will be bedding all along the shores of the lakes in 1-3 feet of water. Another great bait in

Panfish time is here! Bluegill and shell cracker begin their spawn this month. Find bedding areas and catch fish. Look along the banks of the river not necessarily in the bends. Sandy bottom or shell bottom should produce. Red worms and/or crickets on a #4 hook and a spit shot is all you need. Crappie and shad are at the end of their spawning run. Best bet for crappie is to jig fish structure in the river. If you’re going to try full moon fishing in the lakes, March may be your last shot. Tilapia are being taken with bow and arrow and gigs along the shores of Lake Jessup in skinny water. Mullet are beginning to show along the seawall, downtown Sanford.

March is wake up month in the world of big shrimping. The run has started in Volusia County albeit 4 weeks late. Brevard is hit and miss, the hot spots are hovering at “Get ready, get set...”, but have not quite hit the “go button”. They are just on the cusp, and all indications are they will have a season as well. Brevard lagged Volusia last year, so this is not of any concern. The place to be is Oak Hill over the last couple of months, perhaps March will be the month of consistency for Brevard. The sizes of the Oak Hill shrimp are impressive. January-March requires more skill then the Late March to May when we are inundated with a bazillion dinks (under 4 inches). Typically, you cannot pull a bucket without a high percentage of dinks and smalls. The sizes in Oak Hill are dependent on your skill level and ability to blow the big ones up into the upper water column using light. Personally, I am seeing Volusia County

working well.

It already feels like spring on the Kissimmee Chain. The bass are spawning just like they should be. As the water temps warm, the bass are spawning out in deeper water up to 5 feet deep. Target good sandy spawning areas; put the trolling motor down and start hunting for beds. The key is to go right back to where you were catching bass in early February and just move out until you see the beds. Polarized glasses are a must. Open water hydrilla patches are holding good numbers of bass that have already spawned. Bait of choice is live wild shiners for big bass. Artificial baits of choice will be rattle traps chrome and black back; plastic baits in white, watermelon, and June bug have been 2 ORLANDO

cam march2019.indd 2

MARCH 2019

Folks are still catching good numbers of crappie. In shallow water the crappies are now making their way out to open water. Fish the pads and reeds that are clean with no hydrilla. Minnows on a gold hook work best in 3 feet of water around full and new moons. At the end of March start looking for shell cracker beds in 2 feet of water. Sandy areas are best. The bluegill will also start spawning on the full moons when the water temps are warming. Another good place to look will be the canals where there is running water. Walk along the banks and look down to find beds on the edges. Keep an eye open, sometimes the bedding fish might be there just for a few days and then disappear. A good pair of polarized sunglasses are as important as the fishing rods you use.

The bass and crappie bite on Lake Okeechobee has become steadier due to stable weather patterns. The over-night temperatures are staying warm enough to keep the water temperature ranging from the high 60’s – low/mid 70’s which is perfect for both bass and crappie wanting to move up on the beds with each new and full moon phase. I anticipate the month of March and April to be fantastic fishing for both bass and crappie. The “hotter” areas of the lake for bass has been the North shore ranging from the 3rd pole from Observation shoal all the way around to the Tin house areas as you’ll find that the bass and the beds will be somewhat congregated in certain spots. The most-effective catching technique has been “to fish slowly” using worms, pitching/flipping creature-style lures and some top-water worked

buckets of 5-7” inch 3 biters and seeing buckets 4-6 inches with high majority small to medium. The tides decide where anglers choose their locations. If they want an earlier tide they go North towards Edgewater. The favorite place remains Oak Hill from the ramp area all the way down passed Lopez to CM 9a. FWC spent the entire weekend pulling boats over doing full inspections. We have not seen this in nearly a decade. They skipped very few boats. Titusville pier is off to a slow start but that can change any day, you must go to know. The Brevard hot spots RRB are hit or miss but the locals are saying the run is still at its beginning stages. They predict the run will be fully developed this month, so monitor the intel daily. Melbourne reporting no shrimp. Remember, Volusia County is boater country only and it is tide driven. Brevard is wind driven and is suited for boaters, trappers or plank warriors. This month you will be able to catch shrimp in Volusia on the beginning of the incoming tide. March is normally where the sizes start to get smaller towards the end of the month, so get out there and fill your freezer.

methodically around vegetation. On windy days, spinner baits and top-water have been producing. Some of the bigger bites have been the flipping technique into isolated reed clumps using a smaller-compact lure such as a Gene Larew hoo-daddy and/or other similar lures. Okeechobee is known for finding a nice group of bass in one area picking one up here and there until you find that next group of fish - that’s what makes it both challenging and rewarding. For the crappie bite, limits are being caught in the Kissimmee River and very similar areas of the lake as for the bass. Areas on the east side of the lake between the big water release and Hendry creek area have been producing some nice size crappie but you’ll have to fish it when the wind is coming out of the northeast/east as it can get a bit rough and tough to jig. Another area for crappie has been Tin house; Horse Island around the 3rd-4th pole at Observation shoal parts of East/West wall; around Rita and Kreamer Islands.

Although we catch them all year long, this is usually the best time. The water is warming back up to the 70-degree mark. Free-swimming cobia are the most fun to target in my opinion. A few things must come together though. One being sunny skies, you must be able to see into the water a little bit and two, try to get as high as possible.

the boat. I also like live bait. Bunker and pin fish work great too. It’s fun to watch a cobia go nuts trying to eat a livey. Sometimes there are days that you will see 30 fish and maybe only 2 actually eat or get Fired Up on a jig. I haven’t had many cobes turn down a live fish. Some say they will never turn down a live choice shrimp or their magic swim bait. Fishing is just that - fishing. Some days they’re on fire other days they swim away from whatever you throw. My gear of choice is 7-foot medium action rod. Line is 40lb braid and a 50lb mono leader. If I’m using live bait, I use an 8/0 circle hook and I hook the live fish through the back of the head and cast forward and past the fish.

Don’t forget to register in the sunA hungry cobia is not a picky fish rise tournament for the monthnor are they the smartest. My long Cobia Madness. Good luck! bait of choice is a buck tail with a whole squid hooked on it. This gives a natural look and smell. There are many different types of baits and lures people use. Even the steel leader rigs work well at times when they are debating what to eat when they surface at

along the shoreline and canals. A short distance from the shoreline you will find sandy potholes that are re-used by more than one spawning fish. Even downed trees and brush are other areas to look out for. The spawn is still on all throughout The Harris Chain of Lakes. Largemouth bass and black crappie are still being caught in and around shallow water where the females of these species are bedding this time of year. Water temperatures and spring-like weather signal the fish it is time to reproduce. Please handle the large female bass with care, photo and release quickly and they will continue to spawn and restock our lakes. Canals, pockets, coves and points on each lake of the chain are a very ideal spot to target. Areas of the north side on the lakes are a good location to be on the lookout for spawning locations. Look for habitat around lilly pads, these are usually found near hard bottom areas that game fish use to build nests and spawn. Don’t forget to look for sandy beaches

Lipless crankbaits, soft plastic jerk baits, and hard jerk baits are what I would have tied on my rods. Canal mouths that are on main lakes are a transition period the bass will either be in front of them or they would make their way in the canals to start looking looking to make the beds. The crappie bite has been very steady when using bright colored jigs and also minnows tipped on the jig. Under a bobber is something to try. When the weather is cold, they will stack up very tight to lilly pads so you could vertical jig them in between the pads, especially around new or full moon phases. Now is the perfect time to book your own guided bass fishing charter - checkout the website for more fishing pictures and other content. www.cprbasscharters.com

With the cooling water, the largemouth bass and specks will become increasingly active. Specks will start moving shallower into emergent grass lines and timber laydowns with spawning in mind. Try drifting small 1/32 oz. jigs tipped with minnows and, especially if fishing from shore, floating 4 to 5 feet beneath a slip bobber. Typically, I’m in about 6 to 8 feet depths or shallower this time of year. Of course, activity around bridges can produce good results as well, keep an eye out for any flowing water through the chain. Lake Minnehaha and Palatlakaha are among my favorite destinations for specks. The Chain’s canals currently have a lot of golden shiner, bluegill, and bream activity. My kids have a blast catching them and the bass are following right behind them feeding up prior to the

spawn. The shiner is a favorite meal for bass and very few baits emulate that forage better than the 6” Culprit Skinny Jerk in Dark Wild Shiner, tried and true June Bug is also a good color option. Main lake points of Kissimmee grass (maidencane) adjacent to canals and even better with a transition from deeper water nearby are yielding good results. Follow that pattern through to the canals with the Skinny Jerk soft baits rigged weightless or pegged with an 1/16 oz tungsten nail weight. Fish will also relate to harder cover such as the cypress trees. My go to application here is the Culprit 7” Fat Max in Okeechobee color rigged Texas style with a 5/16 oz tungsten bullet weight on a 5/0 wide gap hook. The bait isn’t excessively large but has a thicker profile that will attract a bigger bite. Cast softly at the base of the Cypress knees and let the bait soak before dragging slowly. Both of these baits are poured about 5 miles from the Clermont chain of lakes and available at The Florida Angler either in store, or at www.thefloridaangler.com. MARCH 2019

The first tournament in the second half of the year began with a bang The FLW High School State Championship on the Harris Chain of Lakes! Seminole Junior Anglers’ teams competed against 50 other teams from around Florida trying earn a national championship birth. The teams found conditions tough, with a cold front moving through as well as high boating and fishing pressure from a few large tournaments on the chain in recent weeks. Congratuletions go to the team of Dylan Westhelle and Joey Bloom – First Place! Dylan and Joey came away with the victory with a five fish limit of 17.4bs. They will now be competing in the National Championship in Alabama in June. This team was not the only team to qualify. Grady Windham also qualified with a 5th place finish and Seminole Junior Angler teams made up a large portion of the top 15. Another event that the organization held was the 3rd Annual St. John’s River Bash which was held on February 9th, 2019. The primary purpose of this event each year is to raise funds to help pay for entry fees and travel costs for away tournaments including the FLW High School World Finals held on Pickwick Lake, and B.A.S.S. Nation High School Nationals on Kentucky Lake. This is a great event each year with 2-person teams competing in the tournament followed by a weigh-in open to the public held at Boat Tree Marina. This year, 38 teams of tournament anglers hit the water at what seemed to be a perfect time. The anglers found spawning fish plentiful, and large bags of fish came pouring onto the stage. There were numerous 20lb limits of fish weighed in, however it took much more than that to come away with the victory. The team of John Mullis and Earnest Watson weighed in a whopping 27.05lb bag of fish to come away with the victory. They also had big fish honors with an 8.34lb Trophy Catch. The team finishing as runners up was the Seminole Junior Anglers team of Devin Been and Noah St. Pierre. They weighed in a 24.94lb bag of fish. Finishing out the top 5 was: Dave DiMauro and Tony DiMauro, Chris Westhelle and Dylan Westhelle, And Brian Wethington Sr and Brian Wethington Jr. The tournament concluded with many great raffle prizes and had several local vendors showing their wares. Some of the raffle prizes included: Big Green Egg Grill, Kysek Cooler, Rods, Reels, Boat Cleaning Kits, Life Jackets, and so much more. Title tournament sponsors this year include returning sponsors Orlando Coastal Angler Magazine, Airport Chrysler Dodge Jeep, and KYSEK Coolers, and new sponsors AOK Networking, All Terrain Tractor Service, Inc., and All-American Excavating. Thank you to all who came out to support including Portside Marine, Rothrock Marine, Down To Fish, Bully Dog, Casting for Kids, and Orlando Coastal Angler Magazine. Special thanks to Boat Tree Marina for providing such a perfect location for the weigh-in. Please help us say thanks to our supporters, boat captains, and sponsors including Instant Insurance who sponsors this article each month to share the accomplishments of our next generation of anglers.

Fishing on the Lagoons is solid in March with many of our yearround resident fish firmly holding in their winter pattern but looking for that change of spring. The small mullet has left the flats for deep canals, and only return to the shallows for the late morning warmup. The Predators are doing the same! I look for the large Black Mullet to signify the movement of fish from deeper overnight waters. The trout and redfish will accompany these big mullets on and off the flats. If I don’t see big mullet I don’t fish! As with every year the Black Drum has invaded our winter flats. These fish will tail just like their cousin the redfish. You can get the smaller and bigger versions to eat soft plastics like Slayer SST paddle tails, DOA Shrimp, and Gulp shrimp, but for your best chance a fresh dead shrimp or half blue crab is the ticket. Sight fishing is the way to get our shots in water from 1-3ft. deep. The Indian River is your best chance at this fishing due to the lack luster water clarity in most parts of the Banana River. Don’t forget those polarized sun glasses! These drums will hang until the warming waters push them to deeper sections of the lagoons and bridges. Sometimes it’s just fun to hook a fish! Leaving the stress of challenging species for some fun is not only good for you, but a great way to involve novice anglers and kids. The cooler months of the Space Coast can get the shrimp flowing. The seatrout know and exploit this every year. Now most of these aren’t going to be your big giant “Gator” trout; those will be hot-to-trot soon enough. These little scrappy trout will be 12-20 inches and all the fun you can handle on light tackle. 6wt or less fly gear is also a blast with them. All the causeways will have these trout at night and plenty of them have good access. The 2½ inch Savage Gear Mantic Shrimp is a must use on spinning gear in the 6lb. line class. This durable little shrimp can stand up to a bunch of fish and keep working well. The smaller lures the better if you’re looking for fast non-stop action. Fly lures that mimic small baitfish/minnows and small shrimp can be deadly effective. Go have fun and enjoy some catching; not fishing!

Destination Fishing! By Tom Schlichter

St. Augustine’s Shallow Water Reds And Trout

Capt. Tommy Derringer of Inshore Adventures prepares to release a typical St. Augustine redfish taken from shallow waters on a quiet soft plastic. Photo courtesy of Capt. Tommy Darrenger.

W

ith a claim of being the oldest city in the United States, St. Augustine, Fla. is certainly rich in history. Stroll the streets and you’ll see Spanish colonial architecture, beautiful stretches of sandy beach and ample parklands awaiting exploration. Head out on the water, though, and you’ll also discover tremendous inshore fishing. “Redfish and trout action is really good in our inshore waters during the spring season,” said charter skipper Tommy Derringer of Inshore Adventures (www.Inshoreadventures.net; 904-377-3734). “There’s only a couple of months here when it’s clear enough to sight

CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 4

fish, so you really want to take advantage of it. The action begins in January and lasts through March and into April. This is shallow water casting up on the flats and back in our numerous feeder creeks. Basically, any creek or flat between the Francis and Mary Usina Bridge and the Palm Valley Bridge is worth a shot.” According to Derringer, reds are easiest to spot on a dropping tide. The water is still pretty cold this time of year, so areas that warm quickly are where you’ll want to start. Look for oyster bars or shells on the bottom as the biggest draws, but if the tide gets really low depressions eventually hold most of the reds. Typically, inshore redfish in this area are “slots” weighing 2 to about 10 pounds. Casting a small soft-plastic minnow or grub with a light jig head is a productive and sporty way to get in on the fun. “You want to use a 2500 size spinning reel with a 7-foot medium-light action rod, 10-pound test braid and a lightweight white or chartreuse lure because fish can be spooky in the shallows,” noted Derringer. “Make long casts so as not to crowd your quarry, and choose a lure that lands with a soft splat rather than a big splash. Live shrimp and minnows work well, too, as long as they are presented gently.” If you can’t isolate reds, Derringer suggested backing out into the main channel of the Intracoastal Waterway and working edges and pockets for sea trout. This bite is best from late March into April as the water warms up. Try a MirrOdine Suspending Twitchbait, a soft plastic paddle-tail, or a live shrimp suspended beneath a float, and you’ll see plenty of action. Most of the trout here measure 16 to 20 inches, but if you pass on these and keep looking you might come across pods of bigger fish with some lunkers in the 5- to 8-pound class. If trailering your own boat, Derringer recommends launching at the Vilano Landing Boat Ramp. You can get bait and lures right across the street at The Bait Shack (904-217-3486). For overnight accommodations, The Inn at Comanche Harbor (904-825-0003; www. camacheeinn.com) is right next door to Comanche Cove Yacht Harbor (904-829-5676; www.comancheisland.com) where transient slips are generally available.

CONSTANT YELLOWFIN, DORADO AND

MASSIVE MARLIN By Craig Sutton

T

he action in northwest Costa Rica is outstanding. All five boats of our boats were on the water in January, with 83 trips logged for the month. Yellowfin tuna and dorado are a constant this time of year, but the team also fought a bunch of massive marlin. We released nine blue marlin, 11 striped marlin, three black marlin and 78 sailfish. We also melted a lot of ice with 256 dorado and 158 yellowfin tuna. The 32-foot Harvester was deep in the battle on Jan. 14, as client Kevin Poindexter battled a sweet blue marlin. The marlin was the headliner, but it was supported by an excellent sailfish release. They rounded out the day with a dorado and a yellowfin. Good thing, because it’s easy to work up a big appetite when catching all day long! The Adventurer is a 23-foot panga with the fishing tool of a boat twice her size and a bad attitude to match. This year we have added a Photo by Andy Blackledge bottom machine, tuna tube and outriggers.

Jeff Capen made history on Jan. 15 with the second-ever marlin release on the panga. A blue marlin release is a magnificent achievement on any boat, let alone the sneaky 23-foot switchblade. It’s proof you don’t need a big boat to catch big fish in Costa Rica! FishingNosara hall-of-famer and northeast FishingNosara representative Mark Cooney pulled off an amazing fishing feat with Capt. David on Jan. 18. What, you’ve never released a sailfish on a 23-foot panga with a tiller-steered motor? Legendary Texas angler Jerome McKown added to his record on Jan. 27 with a gaggle of sailfish releases with Capt. Carlos of the 32-foot Discoverer. Great work by Mate Kevin to safely wrangle and release these monsters. Of course these boys weren’t going hungry, thanks to a half-dozen excellent dorado scores. The flagship Wanderer is celebrating her 10th year of fishing in these waters, and one must marvel at the man who has commanded her from Day 1. It is no exaggeration that Capt. William and the Wanderer ran more trips last year than any boat in all of Central America. FishingNosara hall-of-famers Catherine Chase and Ron LaGro added to their legend on Jan. 19 with Capt. William. A striped marlin led off a great day of action. After Catherine’s release, Ron added a sailfish release. They rounded out the morning with a nice stack of dorado filets. This report barely scratches the surface of the blistering-hot action in Nosara. Remember, you can always check the FishingNosara Blog for daily catch updates. If you have been reading this report for a while and waiting for the right time to visit, stop wishing and come fishing! Call FishingNosara at 904-591-2161 or email craig@ fishingnosara.com.

By Richard Matteson

H

ere are some of my favorite fish to eat in the lagoon along with some tips on how to catch them. It’s ok to eat fish from the lagoon, but do it in moderation. 1) Pompano: This silver-blue slab has some of the best white meat. It’s a cold-water fish and is usually caught between December and April on a variety of lures and live bait. Fish small jigs and pompano jigs around shallow drop-offs in 3 to 5 feet of water. Also look for them around bridges and deeper cuts. For live bait, use shrimp or sand fleas. 2) Snook: You can only keep one snook between 28 and 32 inches and only in certain months of the year. Closed season for snook is Dec. 15-Jan. 31 and June 1-Aug. 31. Snook have excellent flaky white meat. Snook can be caught on a variety of lures including topwaters, jigs and live bait. They prefer structure (piers, bridges, mangroves) and feed more actively at night. 3) Flounder: Often overlooked or targeted as table-fare, this species of fish has two eyes on one side of its heads and lies on the bottom waiting for bait to come by. I’ve caught flounder in the lagoon up to 5 pounds and sometimes three or four on an outing. Flounder love jigs and live bait, especially shrimp (live or dead). Fish for them on flats around bridges and on shallow flats in 3 to 4 feet of water. 4) Black drum and red drum (redfish): Black drum love any sort of crustacean, from shrimp to blue crabs and can also be caught on cut bait (ladyfish). Fish for them with bait around bridge pilings or under piers. Redfish will eat bait, and they’ll also take lures. Try a 4-inch jig with a paddle tail or a jig tipped with shrimp. 5) Snapper: I’ve fished for mangrove snapper (10” min) and lane snapper (8” min), and they can be caught easily on small jigs, jigs tipped with shrimp and shrimp. Fish around piers and structure and deeper areas on the flats. 6) Sheepshead and tripletail: Sheepshead are members of porgy family and eat crustaceans and barnacles. Shrimp, fiddler crabs and crabs are favorite baits. Fish for them on the bottom around piers and bridges. Tripletail will hit jigs, but fishing shrimp around buoys and floating markers is your best bet. 7) Mackerel and bluefish. Both species are fast and will hit any lure or live bait. I prefer mackerel to bluefish. They are cold-water fish and move into the lagoon during the winter months. They can be caught around structure, especially bridges with moving water. IS THERE A DISTURBANCE IN THE FORCE?

ranks of the invasive lionfish? Lionfish throughout the affected regions of the Western Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and some Caribbean island locations have all documented nasty-looking lesions or ulcers on their flesh. Currently, only a relatively small percentage of their populations are showing these signs. We have been following this event (lionfish showing skin lesions) for nearly two years now. Several researchers have been studying samples of ulcerated fish from many different locations. A relatively small percentage of lionfish are affected across the invaded areas. The northern Gulf of Mexico seemed to be a bit of a hot-spot about a year ago, but reports of skin lesions have been waning lately. It is suspected that some lionfish did not survive the “infection,” while others appeared to have survived with healed scars and seem to be doing well. These lesions are very similar in appearance to several other common fish-related skin diseases, but scientists have not been able to pin it down exactly. Should anyone encounter a lionfish that has signs of these lesions, report it to the FWC. MyFWC.com/FishKill and provide them with the following info: 1. Location 2. The number of lionfish you noted with ulcers 3. A photograph of what you saw, if possible

ishing has long been a tradition passed down through generations. From great-grandparents who manufactured tools and tackle out of the most basic materials all the way down to my generation’s tech-savvy methods of fishing, we all share something in common. The tug on the end of the line, the organized chaos and landing the fish are all part of the thrill that fishing entails. As an angler growing up in this day 1:14 of age, to realize Airline_Ad_CoastalAngler_8-1-14_Layout 1 8/1/14 PM I’ve Pagecome 1

how much of an impact conservation makes on the livelihood of the sport. When I was young, learning to let a fish go to swim another day was difficult, especially after spending so much time trying to catch it. It wasn’t until later when I understood the importance of catch and release and how it impacts the future of an ecosystem. Conservation has been a popular topic in recent times, with the Florida sugar companies being in the spotlight. Everyone has seen pictures of the widespread fish kills that devastated Florida’s Gulf Coast. With so many people dependent upon that fishery, catch and release along with other methods of conservation are a necessity for restoring this fishing landmark. Most seasoned fisherman agree that success isn’t completely dependent on how many fish one catches or how big they are. Success lies in the challenges that accompanied the fish and how the angler overcame them. The tremendous stories that arise from these outings are a true testament to the will and perseverance it takes. The ultimate display of appreciation comes in the form of releasing the fish back into its habitat. While I love fish tacos as much as the next person, I find it more fulfilling to watch a fish swim away, hopefully to be caught by someone else one day. The technology nowadays enables us to easily capture parts of the adventure. Looking through my camera roll, I not only see pictures of the fish I’ve caught, but also hundreds of stories of how I caught them. Envisioning a future that includes fishing comes with the responsibility of speaking up for the speechless: our waterways and its tenants. Educating people about the value of catch and release makes it possible for there to be a future in fishing. Your short-term sacrifices now will one day light up the face of a young angler yet to know what their new favorite hobby has in store. r spread Great Streams and Craft Beverages Await in Hendersonville, N.C. Photo by Nick Carter

I

f you’re an angler who enjoys following up a day on mountain trout streams with a refreshing craft beverage or two, cast your attention to the Blue Ridge mountain town of Hendersonville. This North Carolina town, about 22 miles south of Asheville, offers miles of stocked trout waters, as well as the popular Hendersonville Cheers! Trail. The two resources make it possible to spend the day catching three types of trout – rainbow, brown and brook – while spending an evening exploring three types of craft beverages – beer, wine and hard cider. First, the fishing part. North Mills River is the prime trout stream in the Hendersonville area. The river’s 4-mile section of delayed harvest waters receives an annual infusion of 11,000 trout from N.C. Wildlife, divvied between brook, rainbow and brown. Spring is a great time to fly fish the delayed harvest waters of North Mills River because no trout have been harvested since Sept. 30. Another hot spot for trout fishing is just across the Henderson County line toward Brevard. The Davidson River offers miles of public trout waters that receive annual stockings of 16,500 fish. Other lesser-known spots for fishing near Hendersonville include

three streams on the eastern side of Henderson County, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown. Rocky Broad River has a 1.2-mile stretch of hatchery support waters from Rocky River Lane to the Rutherford County line near Chimney Rock, while Cane Creek, near the Fletcher community, has 1.5-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters. For those who really want a unique experience, Little River in DuPont State Recreational Forest provides not only a scenic setting for trout fishing, but also a unique one. Delayed harvest waters flow through undisturbed mountains and over several notable waterfalls. Those waterfalls were immortalized on Hollywood’s silver screen in The Last of the Mohicans, as well as the backdrop for the exploits of Katniss Everdeen in the original Hunger Games movie. When the fishing is done, the Cheers! Trail awaits. The trail is one of North Carolina’s best, featuring 16 craft producers offering a variety of experiences. Beer fans love Sierra Nevada’s tasting room, which is one of the largest on the East Coast and features an expansive patio and outdoor amphitheater, while Bold Rock Hard Cider has emerged as a national leader in the hard cider industry and regularly hosts live music (indoors and outdoors), along with cidery tours and a food truck. Several craft producers on the trail create small-batch beverages prized for their quality and originality. Three breweries – Southern Appalachian, Triskelion and Guidon – are within a few blocks of each other in the Depot District, while Sanctuary Brewing Co. is only a few blocks away on Main Street. Sanctuary is pet-friendly with a commitment to pet rescue. Three wineries produce high-quality wines from European varietals. The newest – Point Lookout Vineyards – is located atop a 3,000-foot mountain with panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards, the area’s first vineyard, is on farmland that’s been in the family for more than nine generations. And two miles from Saint Paul, Burntshirt Vineyards offers tastings in its renovated farmhouse overlooking rolling hills of vines. I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly

at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth. There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point. Second, the fruit just taste

better coming out of your home orchard versus buying fruit from the grocers that have little to no flavors. Thirdly, it is good for your soul and you will feel more connected to the environment and nature. Whether it is an apple tree, muscadine vine or a blueberry bush; now is the time to plant. Sheri Daye

s past president and current board member of IUSA (the organization that ratifies world records for spearfishing), I get to share the excitement of big fish applications. The entire IUSA board was amazed by a recent submission. We received word that Luis Viyella had speared a 480-pound yellowfin off the Dominican Republic on Dec. 23, 2018. If approved, this fish would not only be the new spearfishing world record, but it would also beat the current IGFA All-Tackle rod-and-reel record! The All-Tackle stands at 427 pounds, held by angler Guy Yocom and caught off Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Viyella supplied the required photos of the fish, the measurements, the weighing, and the certified scale. He provided witnesses and documented the “Story of the Hunt” which was well-written and riveting. Viyella was new to freediving and bluewater hunting but accompanied by an experienced friend. They were targeting wahoo that day when the tunas showed up. He was excited when his buddy speared a 125-pound yellowfin. As requested, Viyella added a second shot to the fish—a common practice to secure the fish and make the extraction quicker and easier. A bigger tuna showed up, but Viyella’s speargun was already discharged and embedded in the 125-pound tuna, so he called out for his new Daryl Wong speargun from the boat. It wasn’t a bluewater gun, and it wasn’t the ideal set up, but he needed to act quickly. Viyella attached a line and float to the reel gun, dove down, and fired a well-placed shot into the tuna. After attaching additional floats, he made headway in raising the tuna toward the surface. His buddy dove down and placed a second shot to the head, helped manage the lines, and kept sharks at bay until it was landed—all the things a good buddy does.

News of this magnificent fish traveled fast. Viyella was told that, if approved, his fish would eclipse the current spearfishing record of 353 pounds. During the application process, he learned the rules the hard way. In order to qualify, one must shoot and land the fish without assistance from others. It was heartbreaking for Viyella and the board, but his catch is still outstanding, and IUSA awarded a meritorious award. Viyella accepted it with grace and gratitude. He said, “Inside the boat, we realized it was a very extraordinary, giant yellowfin tuna. I cannot describe our feelings of gratitude to God, our emotions, joy, sense of achievement, cheers, hugs, screams of happiness. It had been the most amazing day at sea, and the most exciting catch ever, and I had caught, on rod and reel, a 900-pound blue marlin and 600+ pound swordfish before. This bluewater apnea spearfishing catch was a higher dimension, another level of joy and sense of achievement. Glory goes to God for His love and generosity.” Amen to that, Mr. Viyella! May you continue to be blessed with that same sense of wonder and joy, for that is the real treasure of the sea. Anglers Seek To Cement Legacies At 2019 Bassmaster Classic

T

he 2019 Bassmaster Classic, scheduled for March 15-17 on the Tennessee River, will feature the usual mix of established pro fishing superstars and hungry young pros who are destined to be the stars of tomorrow. The 52 anglers converging on Knoxville will be gunning for the largest share of the $1 million prize fund, and they’ll be aiming to establish their angling legacy by winning the most important title in professional fishing. Among the field are eight former Classic winners, including four-time champion Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., and defending champion Jordan Lee of Grant, Ala., who last year became one of only three anglers to claim back-to-back wins in the event. Seven of the pros have hoisted the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of

the Year trophy, including 2018 AOY winner Justin Lucas of Guntersville, Ala., and Aaron Martens of Leeds, Ala., who has claimed the award three times. “The Classic is a showcase for some of the most accomplished bass anglers in the world,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “You’ll have veteran pros out there who’ve experienced the huge stage that is the Classic and excelled in that environment in the past. But you’ll also have some young guys who are just chomping at the bit to make a name for themselves. “That’s one of the most exciting things about the Classic—it literally will change someone’s life forever.” Anglers hungry for first-time Classic glory include Florida’s Drew Benton, Tennessee’s Brandon Lester and Arizona’s Clifford Pirch — just to name a few. Whoever wins the event, the immediate effects will be easy to see. There’s the world-famous Classic trophy, which weighs more than 40 pounds and is easily the most coveted piece of hardware in professional fishing. Then there’s the $300,000 first-place check and the chance to stand before an arena full of screaming fans as confetti cannons set the stage for the accomplishment of a lifetime. This year’s weigh-ins will be held in Thompson-Boling Arena on the campus of the University of Tennessee. As always, the Classic will be held in conjunction with the fan-favorite Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods. Known as the most important consumer show in the bass fishing world, the Classic Expo will be held in the Knoxville Convention Center and the adjacent World’s Fair Exhibition Hall. Companies from across the fishing industry use the Expo annually to debut new products, and fans will be able to purchase many lures, rods, reels and accessories for the first time anywhere. For more information about the Bassmaster Classic, go to www. bassmaster.com.

Baja’s Inshore Action

On The East Cape

By Nick Carter Big cubera snapper are just one of the species waiting inshore on the East Cape. This one was caught by Jim Rodriguez, a cameraman with the TV show Livin’ The Dream. Photo by Jimmy Nelson.

J

ust looking at a map will tell you the Sea of Cortez is a fish trap. Separated from the Pacific Ocean by Mexico’s nearly 800-mile long Baja California Peninsula, it’s a 62,000 square mile canyon that drops to depths approaching 10,000 feet. The sportfishing out of Cabo San Lucas, on the Peninsula’s southern tip is legendary. It is a bustling destination where marlin, sailfish and tuna abound. But Capt. Jimmy Nelson, host of the TV show Livin’ The Dream, pointed to a quieter destination and some awesome fishing up the Peninsula’s East Cape. Out of the Buena Vista Beach Resort about an hour’s drive north of Cabo, the Sea of Cortez drops to 1,000-foot depths just a few hundred yards off sand beaches. There’s a fleet of sportfishing boats waiting to take anglers offshore to chase all the big pelagics, and the inshore action borders on unbelievable. Even shorebased fishermen can catch some species typically associated with long runs offshore. At a place renowned for billfish, Nelson said the inshore action is as much of a reason to go as the marlin. “You never know what you’re going to get. There’s all kinds of things that will be right there on the edge,” Nelson said. “Roosterfish, African pompano, cubera snapper, Sierra mackerel, even dolphin, wahoo and yellowfin tuna will hit your popper right off the beach.” Never knowing what’s on the end of the line requires anglers to gear up. This is not the same as inshore fishing in the Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic. Nelson said casting 8-inch poppers or live lookdowns from shore is a ton of fun and requires 8000 size spinning reels. A big cubera snapper slamming your popper is a fight you’ll never forget. “It’s a rush,” he said. “You’re catching a bottomfish on top, so they go straight down to the bottom. You have to gear up with some pretty heavy tackle.” Trolling just off the beach is another tactic that puts anglers on a surprising array of the Pacific’s best sportfish. Big roosterfish might be primary target, but again, you never know what will eat when you’re pulling lookdowns and goggle eyes. Big yellowfin tuna have been known to surprise anglers just off the beaches, so 30 wide reels and heavy tackle are required. COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM
