Suzuki Unveils New V6 for Performance Boats S uzuki Marine previewed the new flagship of its SS (Sport Series) motors at the Bassmaster Classic in March. This new engine, the DF250SS V6 4-Stroke, is a high-performance outboard engineered to deliver extra kick for today’s performance-based boats. It is sized and designed for bass boats, bay boats and shallowwater applications. New for 2022, the DF250ATSS is the first SS Series outboard to feature compatibility with Suzuki’s state-of-the-art Suzuki Precision Control (SPC) electronic shift and throttle system that will integrate with Suzuki’s Digital Pro-Pedal Foot Throttle. BIG FISH Kayak Catch & Release

ou’ve done it! Thousands of casts, dozens of early alarms, countless cups of coffee, and now there’s a monster fish on the hook, and from your kayak, no less! It’s a feat to be proud of. However, if you plan on releasing that fish, your attention should soon turn to proper handling techniques, which ensure safety for you and the fish. A sprinkle of chaos is expected when bringing a big fish into a small, plastic boat, but a few easy steps can ensure the fish goes home safely.

1. Keep Them Wet! Regardless of species, once you’ve netted or attached lip-grips to a fish, keep them in the water as much as possible. This is always true if you need to set up a camera, grab pliers or lay out a measuring board, and it’s especially important in summer months, when release mortality increases due to warmer water. I prefer to use lip grips on bigger catches, since it mitigates the need to untangle a large, fired up fish from a net. Storing commonly used tools nearby is also key, particularly in a kayak where space is limited. Once you’re set up, it’s time for a photo or a measurement!

2. Holding Techniques If there’s one thing anglers universally love, it’s the “hero shot.” You know, the one where you and maybe your buddy grin widely while posing with a monster catch. I’m a big fan of hero shots, and of taking them properly. Handling the fish safely is key here, and that means keeping hands away from their gills, holding them horizontally and supporting their belly. Never weigh big fish vertically on a scale. This point is often debated in angling circles, and I respect both schools of thought, but I go with horizontal holds because I think the photos come out better. With length and girth measurements, you can figure out a rough weight, anyway. Now, smile big and grab that picture… and no straight-arming!

3. Respect and Revive Properly reviving big catches is important. It ensures continuity of strong genetics, allows a future angler a chance at the same fish, and it simply feels good knowing you’ve encountered an incredible animal and returned it home safely. Face the fish into current, open its mouth, and if possible, pedal or paddle your kayak to get water flowing over their gills. Revival can take anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. A fish is ready to go when it raises its dorsal spines and lightly clamps onto your hand, or straight up kicks off and swims away like a rocket. If you don’t already emphasize this process, I encourage you to not only take revival time, but to enjoy it! Thank the fish, watch them swim off and get casting again! Everyone should have a process for catch-and-release fishing. Above all, if you plan on releasing a fish, show it respect and reverence for the experience it has given you. t wasn’t that long ago when we all thought the only way to get hogfish was to take a plunge with a spear gun. Now-a-days, it’s considered one of the most action-packed trips you can take, albeit a lot of the action is weeding through the plethora of other fish that come to the party.

Despite decades of thinking hook-and-line hogfishing was impossible, they are actually easy to catch. Tackle requirements are very modest; medium spinning tackle is plenty stout. Rigging is simple, too, a knocker rig with a 2-ounce egg sinker and a #4 circle hook is all you need. No swivel is needed to separate the sinker and hook, as you want your bait right on the bottom. Let the sinker slide all the way to the hook. Hog Balls can be deadly as well, but remember when using natural bait a circle hook is a must (it’s the law). Other than that, you’ll need plenty of shrimp, 4 to 5 dozen per person. Hogfish tend to hang out in areas with plenty of grunts, triggerfish and small grouper, which all seem to be much quicker to eat than hogfish. You’ll need to weed through their friends to get to your hogfish dinner. The good news is, all the other fish lead to an action-packed adventure perfect for kids and impatient anglers, alike. Many people use whole shrimp, but I’ve found half shrimp are equally effective and help the bait go further. Finding hogfish is not that difficult either. They like good hard bottom, especially areas with sea fans and nice ledges. You’ll need to start in at least 35 feet, and I’ve had great trips all the way out to 100 feet and deeper. If you don’t already have a few spots in your arsenal, mapping software like Garmin’s Navionics Vision+ can help you find good places to start. You can even use it on a tablet to scout spots from your couch before you go. Once you are there, if the action isn’t almost immediate, move to the next spot. These fish tend to hang out around hungry schools of buddies. The fun really starts once hogfish join the party. They are hard fighters and unlike the others that tend to just pull straight down, hogs will run side to side and are a blast on light tackle. Best of all, hogfish make great table fare and taste similar to snapper, which they are often misclassified as. They are actually a species of wrasse. It is important to be careful handling undersized fish. Hogfish are hermaphrodites. All of them are females until they reach a certain size and maturity when some become males. Since smaller fish are crucial to reproduction, they should be handled gingerly to give them the best chance at survival. College Scouts Witness Stellar High School Fishing on “The Big O”

his spring marked the launch of a much-anticipated partnership between NSR Fishing and Florida BASS Nation at the South Trail and Spring Trail events at Lake Okeechobee. The mission for NSR (National Scouting Report) is simple. NSR Fishing is building a database of qualified high school anglers for use by college coaches across the country. Florida produces some of the best talent in tournament bass fishing, and NSR scouts were excited to get out on the “Big O” to identify young anglers showcasing their skills and knowledge of the lake. National Scouting Report CEO Rusty Rigney was honored to be the keynote speaker for the Florida BASS Nation pre-tournament meeting. Glenn Cale, Florida BASS Nation Director, said as he introduced Rigney: “NSR has been working with athletes and their families in traditional sports for over 40 years. NSR scouts were out filming and evaluating many teams in the points race for the year, but there was also a lot of buzz about a few teams that had large bags of fish. At weigh-ins, Connor Swindle and Max Lofton of the Hendry County HS Bassmasters placed third with 20.15 pounds. Michael John Teate jr. and Evan Newell of Mid Florida Youth Anglers finished second with 21.88 pounds.

bl Drew Pitts and Luke Romesburg of the Tampa Bay Jr Bass Club stole the show and took home first place with a giant five-bass limit of 32.18 pounds. Sunday welcomed another 170-plus boats for the Spring Trail tournament. NSR scouts were anxious to get on the water to see how young anglers would adjust to higher winds and rain that were moving in early Sunday. Many predicted lower weights. However, six high school anglers from the Okeechobee Brahmans team proved everyone wrong, taking the top three spots. Joshua King and Hunter Daniels brought in the heaviest sack of the day with 30.35 pounds. Behind them were Lane Davis and Korbyn Lewes with 24.81 pounds. Third place went to Rafe Sexton and Hillary Martin with 23.16 pounds. With two 30-plus-pound bags of fish and many over 20, several Florida high school anglers made a case to be considered NSR 5 Star Anglers. NSR Fishing’s search for the best anglers in the country continues over the next couple months with scouts heading to legendary fisheries like Lake Guntersville, Lake Seminole and Lake Palestine, where more of the best anglers in the country will show off their skills.

April Surf Fishing on the Treasure Coast

pril is windy and will be the last good month of fishing for many of the winter fish like pompano, mackerel and bluefish, before they move north. Some of these fish, especially bluefish, will remain but in relatively small numbers. Pompano can be caught all month on the beach with orange fish bites and sand fleas. In the Indian River Lagoon, try jigging from the bridges with pompano jigs (chartreuse or hot pink) on moving tides. I’ve also caught random pompano in the lagoon on ¼-ounce jigs with a 4-inch tail (white). Permit have also been caught on the beach on small crabs, fish bites or large sand fleas. Both permit and pompano are usually 50 to 70 yards offshore. The mackerel bite is still good on the beach early in the morning and when bait is present. The early morning bite is in the trough around the close breakers. Small spoons (1-ounce silver crocodile or gold Johnson spoons) with treble hooks seem to work best, but the fish will hit any lure retrieved quickly near the surface. The mackerel are still in the Peck’s Lake area, where you need to fish from a boat. The bluefish bite has been sporadic with fish chasing bait. The bluefish bite has been best in early morning or when bait is present. Some large snook are being caught in deeper water of the St. Lucie River both North and South forks, at the Crossroads and around deep piers and bridges. Large Tomahawk jigs and live or cut bait fished early in the morning, at dusk or at night work the best. There are still some snook on the beach, but rarely. April is a month you can harvest one snook between the 28”- 32” slot. Trout are scattered in the lagoon and can be caught on jigs and topwater lures like a Skitterwalk or Zara Spook on warm afternoons. The best trout areas are north from the power plant to the Vero Beach flats. The flounder bite is still good on small jigs and live bait on the flats and around the bridges. Some redfish have been caught on jigs tipped with live shrimp from the power plant north. It’s best to target mangroves on high tide in the afternoon. As usual, there are scattered schools of ladyfish and jacks cruising the beaches. Some nice jacks in the 5- to10-pound range have been taken on jigs and shallow-running crankbaits. The ladyfish and jack bite has been good when bait is present. Remember, see the birds, find the bait, catch the fish! The Angler Profile

At the ripe old age of 11, Korbin Brinkman has already accomplished more in the outdoors world than many adult anglers. For example, he caught his largest bass, his PB, a whopping 8.2-pound giant, just last summer; his first buck with a rifle, and his first buck with a bow last hunting season and just last week he bagged his first Gobbler in an orange grove near Josephine Creek. Korbin is both an angler and a hunter, having caught virtually every variety of freshwater fish in Florida, as well as bull redfish and an eightpound snook in saltwater. Unusual accomplishments for an 11-year-old boy, one might think, but when I asked Korbin about it, his reply was “I started fishing when I was around three years old but I really got hardcore about three years ago.” Korbin is quick to recall some of his earliest fishing trips with his dad, Charlie Peck, an Agriculture Detective with the Highlands County Sheriff ’s Department, and his papa, Jim Peck who lives close by. “I used to fish farm ponds a lot, but my dad and my papaw would take me out to my secret lake and that’s where I really learned how to fish,” he said. I asked him about his lake and he replied with a grin, “Let’s just call it Lake X.” He said people ask him all the time where he caught his fish and he said he usually replies “in the corner of their mouth.” He is definitely a fisherman! When I asked him about is favorite lake, aside from Lake X, he indicated Lake Kissimmee and Lake Istokpoga were two of his favorites. Korbin fishes with both spinning and baitcasting outfits, but prefers casting over spinning. His favorite lures include Trick Worms, Neco Rigs, Chatterbaits and Zara Spooks. I mentioned that it was a bit unusual for someone his age to be successful with a baitcaster and he quickly responded by saying “I got my first baitcaster on my 10th birthday, and now I’ve got four of them.” My 2 OKEECHOBEE

dad set up an old boot in the backyard and I tied on an old plug and practiced for thirty minutes every day until I could put the lure in the boot. It’s not that hard,” he said with a shrug of his shoulders. I just met Korbin a few weeks ago at the Marine & Tackle Warehouse in Sebring, where he was presented $1400.00 for winning the Crappiethon Contest sponsored by MTW. One of his fishing mentors, and local professional bass fishermen Gerry Brousseau was there to cheer him on and join in the celebration. Korbin is not only an avid sportsman, but also a baseball player, playing second base and occasionally pitching for his team in the 11-12 age group of the Dixie Youth League. On the subject of future goals he said, “I’d like to get a scholarship in baseball or fishing, and ultimately, I want to pursue a fishing career.” When he’s not fishing, hunting or playing ball, he enjoys watching videos of some of his favorite fishing professionals like Mike Iaconelli, Scott Martin and Mark Daniels. He also watches and has appeared in a video with a local fishing celebrity angler Mike Meisenheimer, better known as mikeybalzz. One of my last questions when I interview someone for the Angler Profile is “what’s the funniest thing to ever happen to you when you were fishing?” Korbin had to think about it and finally replied, “One time we were fishing on Toledo Bend and I set the hook on a real monster. I couldn’t believe how heavy it was!” “It turned out to be a 400-pound log.”

the magic of the stick worm

’ve always said if they won’t hit a stick worm they aren’t there. I don’t think there has ever been a lure that is more versatile as the stick worm. You can fish them shallow, deep, or even my favorite way wacky style. So many sizes, colors and even shapes. I’m going to make this as simple as I can by just letting you know how I fish the stick worm. Let’s start out with colors, my favorite all round color is the green pumpkin for clean water and in off color water or when the light is low the black blue colors. Most of the time color has nothing to do with your success; it is how you are presenting the worm to the bass. Now let’s talk about size because size really does matter when I’m fishing the stick worm. I prefer the big 7inch bruiser stick worm because it has the fall I’m looking for and the texture is better than any other stick worm on the market when I’m wacky fishing the bait. When the fish aren’t in a feeding mood you can still get a lot of bites using the wacky method. The way the Bruiser bait reacts to the hard twitch of my rod is what makes this bait the best. Remember it is the nature of a predator to clean up any injured prey and the Bruiser bait has the action I’m looking for. hey say good things come to those who wait. Bass fishermen are usually very patient. They will plan their fishing trips carefully and prepare their rods, reels and gear to make sure they are ready for that “big bass”. When they finally arrive at their “spot”, sometimes called a “hole”, they will sit for hours waiting for their bobber to be dragged under water by a hungry lunker. My brother, Jack, is a fisherman and he recently told me a fish story about how patience isn’t always the answer. Jack and I are only 13 months and 17 days apart. I have no patience, but he has a lot. I’m wound up a little tight and Jack is easy going, calm and deliberate. Perhaps that’s why fish stories sometimes end up with a celebration and trophies and sometimes end with a “big” one that got away. 50 years ago, before Jack became a boat captain and saltwater fishing guide off of Pompano Beach where he lives, he began fishing in Lake Okeechobee. He would prepare for the trip the night before. Rods, reels, boat and motor all were readied for the 90-minute drive up US 27 to the “Big Lake”. He would put his boat in at one of the many fish camps that line the shore of the lake. On this morning, he bought some nice wild shiners from Slims Fish Camp and headed across the lake to fish a “hole” off of Ritte Island where he’d had success fishing before. It was still dark when he arrived and began fishing. He sat and

watched his bobber do nothing for over two hours… Not even a nibble. But being the patient person he is, he reeled in the shiner, checked to see if it was alive, gave it some encouragement and threw it back in the lake. By this time the sun had come up and he saw another boat coming out from the direction of the fish camp. He recognized the boat and it was a fishing guide he knew with a woman who chartered the guide to take her out to fish. Jack made a decision to leave his favorite “hole” and move to another spot nearby. He was hoping the approaching guide and his customer would take over his old spot which he gave up on. He saw them pull in and they waved at Jack before they started fishing. Within 15 minutes Jack looked up and saw the woman’s fishing pole bent over with the tip touching the water. He watched in amazement as the guide helped her land a giant bass. The guide held up the big bass and waved it enthusiastically in the morning air for Jack to see. The woman and the guide quickly packed up and headed back to the fish camp to celebrate, take photos and hopefully release the fish. Jack had enough excitement for one day and feeling like a robbery victim, he headed home. Jack found out later the fish weighed 14 pounds and was the biggest bass taken in Lake Okeechobee that year. With a little more patience, that would have been his “lunker”.

ishing the lake in March was a blast….customers caught personal best big bass and record number big crappie. The fun and productive days will continue through April and into May as the big Red ears (Shell crackers) and Bluegill move into the shallows for their spawn time which is typically April through the summer months so book your fun-filled exciting day on the water. Fishing in April is typically the start of the transition fishing for bass…a good time to start thinking about fishing deeper water like the River and Canals with deep crank baits, Carolina rigs, big jigs and worms worked around the ledges and drop-offs. April is also a good time to throw swim jigs/baits and frogs worked around lilly pads and other areas where the bream have moved in to spawn. Fishing the outside grass edges with rattle traps, spinner baits and my fav, top water lures !! Your basic color patterns are June bug; Black/Blue; White; Shad and Bream colors will work. If you plan to bream fish, live red worms and crickets rigged on ultra-light spinning gear like the Lews Wally Marshall Speed Shooter 6.0 and 6.5 rod/reel combo tipped with 6 lb mono line, small split shot weight and hook and you’re ready for some fun action. If you like fingerling catfish, think about booking a trip the first week of May…it’s a good time to catch them in the river and you’ll also catch bluegill and shell crackers as well. Crappie Fishing

he crappie fishing on Lake Istokpoga has been good all month, but the wind has posed a few problems. We’ve been averaging around 20 nice crappies per trip, but in a few cases, we quit early due to the wind. The crappie are in the full-stage of spawning now and can be found almost anywhere on the lake that has vegetation. My preference has been the pencil reeds and places where the pads meet the reeds, where we’ve found some really big ones, along with an occasional bass. My preference is minnows, although some of my clients prefer using small jigs. There’s still time to catch a few before the spawn is over. I’ve got a nice pontoon boat to take you out on. We can comfortably fish up to six people. I provide all the equipment and bait; all you need to bring along is some sun screen and liquid refreshments. And, if you don’t want me to take you out, you can always rent my pontoon boat for a reasonable fee.

t’s looking like we are having an early spring here in South West Florida. Not only do we feel the warmth, our local fishery also feels it. Over the past couple weeks we have seen a large influx of Snook and Jacks starting their spring feeding frenzy. The one that we all look forward to is snook. These guys have been laying dormant waiting for warming water temps to let them know it's time to start feeding. Well the last couple weeks have not disappointed. We have been putting plenty of fish to boat. Some of our long-time clients have caught their personal best snook. When the snook bite slows down in between the tides, we have been playing with some really nice Jacks. These guys are with out a doubt one of the hardest fighting fish and you'll get a work out.. As our waters continue to rise we should hopefully see some tarpon also start to show up. We are fortunate enough to have some residential tarpon that will begin to feed early. These fish for the most part are what we call juveniles. Even these younger fish can put up a strong fight, and are known for spending lots of time in the air putting on a show. As our water continues on its warming trend, so will our fishery.

Florida trail region 5 North florida Ocala to County Road 255 By Bob Fromhartz North Florida is a window into the past. Passing through 1700’s plantations and civil war battlefields. The region is known primarily for its flatwood forests and hilly terrain along spring fed and tannin rich rivers. This section of the Florida Trail is 219.6 miles long, winding from the start at the north end of the Ocala National Park. Cross SR-20 at mile 26. Oak Hammock Camp at mile 30.7 Iron Bridge Shelter is just west of the bridge at mile 41.8. At mile 55.3 there is a picnic area and campground. (With fee). Mile 71.4 is Cow Creek Camp. Mile 96 is Lake Butler, a full-service town with no lodging. The Sheriff ’s office may give permission to camp in the city park. Mile 119.1 is the town of Olustee. See the Olustee battlefield museum, interpretive trail, and cemetery. Enter Big Shoals State Park at mile 144.3 with camping at 146.2. Campsites also available at mile156.6, 158.1 and 164.5. of pads, Corky begins working the area with precision casts. He pitches deep into the pads, allowing the Bruiser bait to settle, before moving back towards him in gentle hops. I asked him about the rig he was using and he took a minute to explain. “I’ve got a number of Speed Spools, ranging from the faster gear ratios to the real workhorses, and I spool most of them with 50 lb. Power Pro. The rig I’m using on this rod is a black and blue Bruiser 5” worm with a ¾ ounce punch weight with a bluegill-colored skirt,” he said. I asked about the heavier weight, wondering if he was concerned with how fast the bait would fall, and he said “I’ll go to a lighter weight, like a 3/8th ounce from time to time but in this heavier vegetation, that ¾ ounce weight gets me down to the bottom fast.

9:15 a.m. Corky sets up on a decent three pounder and almost flips him over the other side of the boat. It’s his second bass of the day, and a good sign that the bass may be in the pads.

10:00 a.m. After covering a pretty large area, without a hit, and with the wind picking up, Corky decides it’s time to make another move.

10:10 a.m. I ask Corky how many days he fishes and he took a few

minutes to give it some thought. “I probably fish somewhere between 150 to 200 days a year,” he said, maybe surprising himself that he fished that often. “Sometimes I’ll fish so many days in a row I literally lose count. Last week I fished 5 days in a row and I was pretty wiped out by the end of the week and had to take a break.” A break for Corky is taking his Harley out for a ride.

6:30 a.m. I meet up with Corky at his house on a long, winding canal on Lake Istokpoga. He’s already got his boat in the water and within minutes, we’re out of the canal and into the lake. He pulls out the first of many Reaper Rods stacked on the front deck that he’ll be fishing with today.

7:15 a.m. The sun is rising over Corky’s shoulder as he flips the cattails. Just ahead of us, a pontoon boat, anchored alongside the reeds and captained by his wife Tangie, is busy catching crappies. 7:32 a.m. Corky flips his first bass of the day, a small male, onto the

front deck. He releases the bass and pitches back in hoping the male bass was on a bed and a female might be nearby. No takers. We move slowly back into an opening and the blind-mosquitoes are everywhere. It’s not unusual to run into these pests when fishing the reed line. I’ve seen anglers cut off their lure when it’s stuck inside the cattails, rather than go in for it and disturb the insects. I notice all the rods on his deck are Reaper Rods, and I ask him about them. “I’ve fished with lots of different rods since I’ve been guiding and I haven’t found anything to compare to the strength and sensitivity of a Reaper rod,” he said, as he spit out a blind mosquito and pitched into a likely looking spot.

8:10 a.m. Corky reels down and lowers his rod, but the bass dropped

the bait. On the way in, his hook snags into one of the reed stalks, and he can’t pull it loose. Running the boat in with the trolling motor, he lays down on the front deck to retrieve his lure. I hear him cussin’ out the reeds under his breath.

8:30 a.m. Time to move. Corky cranks up the big Mercury 250 hp engine and idles out to deeper water before stepping down on the pedal. The 21’ Ranger Inter-Coastal rises up quickly and lays back down on a smooth plane.

9:07 a.m. Positioning the boat, a short distance from a large expanse

10:33 a.m. Corky sets up on a good fish and the bass immediately runs into the heaviest concentration of reeds and gets hung up. This is a big fish, and it’s not that unusual to have them wrap around the reeds. I watch as he moves the boat in closer and holds the rod upright, not wanting to give the fish any slack. But the big bass is gone. I asked him about the hooks he uses and he said he likes the Trokar

hooks for flipping and pitching. I mentioned to him that I quit using them because I think they’re so sharp they actually cut a slot in the bass’s jaw and if the fish is able to get just a milli-second of slack line, the hook will fall out. He agreed they are very sharp hooks.

11:10 a.m. Corky puts another small two-pounder in the boat.

TWO MORE HOURS 12:05 p.m. Corky asks me to run the trolling motor while he changes

baits. I mentioned my thoughts on how important color is, and he agreed, that color doesn’t really matter, as long as it’s blue/black.

12:15 p.m. The change makes a difference as Corky ties into a good fish.

It quickly runs towards the boat, forcing him to pick up line quickly. With one sweep of the rod, he flips a solid five-pounder over the gunnels. “I couldn’t get to the net in time,” I said, as I moved back to the rear of the boat. “No problem. I just flip em’ in the boat,” he said with a big smile. Another testament to the strength of the Reaper rods, I thought.

12:30 p.m. We move back into the reeds to get out of the increasing winds. Cattails, mixed in with pads, along with the clean water give the area almost a surreal “fishy look”. Glancing out at the main lake I can see “whitecaps” as the wind whips across the open water. Only an hour and a half left to fish and it’s starting to rain. The rain is light and almost un-noticeable. 12:45 p.m. As Corky flips the area, we talk about his guide service,

and how his wife Tangie, who is both his partner in the business as well as his tournament partner. “Tangie is a terrific angler,” and now she’s doing her own thing, offering crappie guide trips, as well as boat rentals under the name Poga Boats. I know Tangie and I remember talking to her after one of the first couple of Big Show bass tournaments that she and Tangie won. If I remember correctly, she had the big bass of the tournament.

12:51 p.m. Corky’s attention is quickly diverted to his Reaper rod,

which he lowers, and quickly sets up on another fish. A huge bass responds, exploding on the surface a good twenty-five feet back into the reeds. Corky muscles the fish in as I grab the net and watch as he moves the giant into the net. This fish is too big to just flip into the boat. This is a good one, for sure! We get out the scale and weigh the fish. Just under eight pounds. A nice kicker, that will definitely help his total weight for the day.

1:15 p.m. The northern sky’s getting darker in the direction we have to

go, and with the wind kicking up, we agree to give it another 10-15 minutes before we head back in.

1:16 p.m. Corky set’s the hook and there’s nothing there. His Bruiser

bait is gone. He ties on another worm and flips back into the same spot. The bass picks up the worm and Corky sets up and lands another three-pound bass. When the bass landed on the deck, the hook fell out.

1:40 p.m. Time to call it a day. As we head in, I can’t help but notice all the blind mosquito’s stuck to the back of Corky’s shirt. They’re all over the me as well, and the boat. We both marvel at their ability to hold on when Corky drops the hammer and we speed along at 50 miles per hour.

The day in Perspective. Corky is definitely a “fishing machine.” He never stopped fishing for more than a few minutes to change baits or try another spot all day. In fact, I think I only saw him take a drink of water once. He’s a tough competitor and as a guide, he knows where to go to find the fish! Total catch for the day: Corky’s five biggest fish weighed just under 21 pounds. Given the weather conditions, a pretty good day on the water.

his column isn’t about fishing. But I think most anglers will appreciate the story. I’ve owned dogs since I was a little boy. My first dog was an old, over-weight beagle, a hunting dog that my dad said was just too old to hunt. I couldn’t have been more than 7 or 8 years old, and I had to share the dog with my little brother Bill. His name was Paulie, and we loved that dog! Since then, I’ve had many different dogs. And many different breeds. But I’ve always loved big dogs. My last two, Ranger and Riley – a 150-pound black Lab/Rottweiler mix and a 100-pound Golden Retriever, both passed away a couple of years ago, at the age of 10 and 12. Big dogs just don’t live as long as small dogs, and losing them is hard. It just doesn’t seem fair! A few days ago, I came across this little story and it really touched my heart. Here's the surprising answer, as to why dogs live a shorter life than people, from a 6-year-old child. As a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Setter named Doobie. The dog’s owners, Bill, his wife Linda, and their little boy Joey, were all very attached to, and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Doobie and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn’t do anything for him, and offered to perform the euthanasia

procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Bill and Linda told me they thought it would be good for sixyear-old Joey to observe the procedure. They felt as though he might learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Doobie’s family surrounded him. Joey seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Doobie slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Doobie’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Doobie’s death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that dogs' lives are shorter than human lives. Joey, who had been listening quietly, piped up and said, “I know why.” Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I’d never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try and live. He said, “people are born so that they can learn how to live a good life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?” The six-year-old continued, “well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay for as long as we do.” Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

• When your loved ones come home, always run to greet them. • Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride. • Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy. • Take naps. • Stretch before rising. • Run, romp, and play daily. • Thrive on attention and let people touch you. • Avoid biting when a simple growl will do. • On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass. • On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree. • When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body. • Delight in the simple joy of a long walk. • Be faithful. • Never pretend to be something you’re not. • If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it. • When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently. That's the secret of happiness that we can learn from a good dog. What a great story! Give your dog a hug.

Max and JD did not know each other in life. There is no question that the intersection of their lives and stories are tied inextricably to their personal testimonies of faith, the tragedies of their deaths and the unique experiences of loss experienced by their surviving family members, loved

In a 2018 study NIH specifically found a negative association between screen time and psychological well-being among children and adolescents across a diverse array of well-being measures. Wellbeing measures included measures of self-control (think impulsivity and emotional regulation), relationships with caregivers, emotional stability (the ability to stay calm), and diagnoses of anxiety and depression or mental health treatment. The research found that psychological well-being was better for teens using less, specifically 1 hour a day of screen time versus teens using more, specifically 7 or more hours a day of screen time. In the study parents of teens who get high levels of screen time with 7 hours or more report teens argue more (sound familiar anyone?), have difficulty making friends, are described as more difficult to care for, display poor emotional regulation, have an inability to finish tasks, have less curiosity, and were twice as likely to have a diagnosis of anxiety or depression or other mental health condition.5 Pretty compelling evidence for a closer look at implications for our kids after nearly two years of shutdowns and virtual learning! Even without such a review there are plenty of good reasons that parents and caregivers may already be inclined to support teens and preteens as they come out of the past two years of challenges. Maybe you’ve seen changes in your child or teen in response to the stresses and losses they have met. Or maybe you have smiled quietly at the resilient nature of the human spirit watching them bounce back charging full steam into their future with the return to all the freedoms our great state offers. Maybe you like many Floridians have relied heavily on the outdoors and beautiful natural environments that we have the great fortune to enjoy year-round to cope with and take breaks from overwhelming circumstances. If so, you already know what researchers spend months and years studying, that the outdoors is good for your mental health! Studies that focus on urban development find that the inclusion of greenspaces in cities enhance mental health and feelings of wellness,

reducing depression in residents. Standford researchers recently found “that people who walked for 90 minutes in a natural area, as opposed to high-traffic urban setting, showed decreased activity in a region of the brain associated with a key factor in depression.” 6 Hardly surprising information to Floridians. But what’s more notable is that recently researchers are looking at how and why the return to nature and natural environments may function as a curative resource for mental health maladies. In doing so they have stumbled upon unexpected results that suggest that exposing younger children and adolescents to nature and providing for more immersion in outdoors activities have many benefits that may last significantly longer than previously thought. Clear correlations were found between the time people spend outdoors when they are young and lower levels of depression and anxiety in adulthood. Yes, you read that right, time spent in nature as a kid makes you a healthier adult. Additional benefits could be seen in enhanced likelihood that adults who spend time outdoors in nature had greater feelings of ownership and stewardship over natural environments and protecting the health of those environments. One need only to speak briefly to any of our local area fisherman to know that most grew up right here on or around our lake and are still to this day the steadfast protectors of its beautiful shores and waterways. Floridians recognize we were born in a special place and teaching others to appreciate and protect its beauty and resource is critical to our State’s overall health and prosperity. If your considering ways to help your teen or child possibly for many years to come as they stabilize from the stress effects of the past two years, don’t underestimate the power of the outdoors. Getting on the water and teaching skills that go into recreational activities like fishing have multiple benefits and can’t be undersold. While you may think you are teaching small things such as how to cast or choose the right bait, what you may not realize is you’re doing so much more. You may be teaching and modeling enhanced coping skills, enhanced relationship skills, communication, and creating resiliency by building relationship and connection with your teen, reducing isolation and enhancing a greater sense of wellbeing in them. Mahi-Mahi Cuts Explained I

f you’re an offshore angler in Florida, you likely already know the state is cutting in half the recreational limits for dolphin in Atlantic state waters. The changes, effective May 1, slash the recreational daily bag limit from 10 to 5 fish per person and the vessel limit from 60 to 30 fish per vessel. The simple reason given in FWC’s press releases is that anglers in the Keys and the state’s analyses have both witnessed fewer and smaller dolphin in recent years. FWC’s presentation from the most recent commission meeting tells a

deeper story. First off, mahi are extremely important to recreational fisheries off south Florida and the Keys, and Florida recreational landings have fallen dramatically, according to FWC data. In the 1990s, the recreational fishery experienced several peaks between 20 and 30 million pounds per year. Since 2010, the highest year for landings came in at about 15 million pounds in 2015. Between 2016 and 2020, that number never topped 10 million pounds, and in 2020 it slipped below 5 million. Those are pretty scary numbers with an abrupt downward swing for a species that is short-lived, fast growing and should repopulate quickly. The kicker is, no one really knows the status of Atlantic dolphin stocks because they are highly migratory and distributed from New England to the Caribbean coast of South America. International harvest is an unknown factor. Dolphin are very sensitive to water temperatures, and warming oceans are offered as a potential explanation for Florida anglers seeing fewer dolphin. Meanwhile, recreational dolphin trips and anecdotal reports of success are increasing off the Mid-Atlantic and New England. The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council, which manages federal waters of the Atlantic off the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida, reduced the recreational dolphin limit from 60 to 54 fish per vessel in June 2021. Florida advocated strongly for deeper cuts as a precaution; however, North Carolina is apparently reveling in its improving mahi fishery and would only agree to the 54 fish per vessel reduction. Part of Florida’s push is proactive management for the fishery, which would include increased international engagement to get a better idea of what is actually going on. This year’s dramatic cut in recreational limits for state waters might, however, be little more than a gesture. Over the last decade, about 90 percent of the recreational catch off Florida has come from federal waters. There aren’t many anglers catching mahi in state waters, but it’s worth noting that Florida anglers and charter operations have shown ample support for these cuts. Perhaps the fishery will see self-imposed restrictions on the part of anglers in federal waters. If you’re wondering why no one is screaming about commercial anglers in this issue, it’s because commercial harvest in U.S. waters of the Atlantic has made up only about 5 percent of landings over the last 30 years.

International Rod Building Competition Judges the Finest Rods in the World

he International Rod Building Challenge is a truly international competition, with builders from all over the world crafting some of the finest custom fishing rods on the planet. This year’s competition, judged in March in Oviedo, Fla., was the largest competition on record. More than 80 mystery blanks were sent out all over the world to North American builders as well as builders in Europe, South America and Asia. All the competitors returned their completed rods to be initially judged at International Custom Rod Building Expo by a panel of 30 judges to choose the top 10. The top 10 were then taken back to American Tackle Headquarters, where an elite panel of judges from custom rod builders, media, trade and anglers graded each rod. With such a high caliber of builders, it was amazing to see all the different styles and builds all based on the same blank. “It was incredible to see so many different interpretations on what the American Tackle Co. mystery blank could be used for,” said Don Morse of American Tackle Co. This year’s winner was Danny Thomson, of

North Carolina. His amazing custom rod build incorporated his love for duck hunting as well as fishing. Second place went to Hoove Brieuc, of Belgium, with his diode and cooper build. Third place was awarded to Gary Allner, of the United Kingdom, with his ultra-shift chameleon painted rod. The winner, Danny Thomson, said this about his build: “You may have heard of an Eastern North Carolina tragedy that recently occurred,

where four youth duck hunters and four adults went down in a plane crash. All eight lives were lost. Even though this rod was inspired and built before this tragedy, it is my intent to dedicate this rod to the #DownEastStrong community and raise awareness to help fund this unfortunate event.” For more photos of these exceptional custom rods, see the April issue of The Angler Video Magazine available at www.vidmag.com.

BROWARD CLEANUP NETS 20 TONS OF TRASH

he Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF) organized the 45th annual Broward County Waterway Cleanup on March 5. Presented by the Florida Inland Navigational District (F.I.N.D.), this annual cleanup is Broward’s largest and longest-running environmental event and began in the 1970s. This year, more than 1,100 volunteers gathered at more than 35 sites throughout Broward County to clean up waterways, parks and communities. Participants took part in the event by land and boat. In total, more than 20 tons of trash was cleaned up across the county. Some of the more unique items cleaned up included two cars, a boat, a guitar and a large gold chain. To thank volunteers, MIASF hosted its Trash Bash, the annual postevent celebration, at the Lauderdale Small Boat Club. This party gathers all volunteers, ranging in ages from 2 to 87, to celebrate with food and drinks, live music and raffles. “While taking care of our environment is a priority 365 days a year, it is exciting to bring the community together on this one day with the mission of cleaning our waterways,” said MIASF Vice President, Lori Wheeler, “This event creates the impact it does because of all of our incredibly passionate volunteers. It’s amazing to see the community come together, year after year, for a cause bigger than ourselves.”

he fight didn’t last long, maybe a couple of minutes, but it was exciting. Between bulldog runs, the fish broke the surface and walked on water, shaking its head in anger. When Kent Edmonds steered the fish out of the current and brought it to hand, a broad grin broke across the man’s face. He lifted a chunky shoal bass for appraisal before release. It was a decent fish, maybe 14 inches. Still, on a 6-weight fly rod, the strength of the fight rivaled that of a largemouth twice its size. Shoal bass are aggressive and pugnacious. They are an intriguing sport fish native to just one Southeastern river system.

Shoal Bass Fishing for “shoalies” is so much fun. They exhibit the aggression of any black bass, yet their preferred habitat is the swift-water shoals other bass avoid. Like trout, they hover in eddies and dart out to grab prey adrift in the current. They readily attack topwater lures and flies and grow to record weights approaching 9 pounds. Anglers regularly catch 2- to 5-pound shoal bass, and the largest fish reach lengths up to 24 inches. A new Georgia record was caught from the Chattahoochee River near Columbus, Ga. in December. It weighed 8 pounds, 5 ounces. The IGFA world record was an 8-pound, 12-ounce monster caught from Florida’s Apalachicola River. With all that going for it, the relative anonymity of shoal bass is due to geography. There is only one small slice of the world where they exist. The species is native 14 NATIONAL

to the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint (ACF) River Basin, which drains portions of Georgia and Alabama down to the Gulf of Mexico through the Florida panhandle. They are a very cool fish that would be in serious trouble if not for one stretch of Georgia river. Extensive damming has turned ACF River Basin into a series of reservoirs. Shoal bass still exist in pockets across the entire drainage, but habitat alterations have allowed non-natives like spotted and smallmouth bass to out-compete and interbreed with shoal bass. The upper Flint River is the largest remaining stretch of unaltered native shoal bass habitat. It is arguably the best shoal bass fishery in the world.

The Flint River Edmonds has guided fly fishers on the Flint for about 30 years, and while he won’t admit it, he’s largely responsible for the river’s sterling reputation as a fishery. In rural Upson County, Ga., the Flint is like a snapshot back in time. It twists through pine forests of the middle Georgia countryside, undammed for some 220 miles. There’s a sweet spot for fly fishers in the middle of this long run at a geologic formation known as the Fall Line. The Fall Line is the coastline of an ancient sea that cuts a 20-mile-wide swath of rapid elevation loss across the region. PELAGIC HUNTING WITH THE CORRECT TOOLS

here are correct tools for any project, and we have to use our time wisely. First and foremost, I think water temperature is a key to finding the wahoo and tuna consistently. I know it costs a few bucks, but you can subscribe to some sites (not promoting any here) that will give you a very clear picture of where you can find a degree or two temperature break on the edge. Once you narrow down a distance and heading for the desired water temps, you then need to locate the bait. Granted, there are times when the fish will not be on the bait visible on the recorder or on the surface, but just oriented on structure and/or temperature break. This is when it gets down to visible and electronic hunting. There are electronics available that can locate individual and groups of birds at long distances. This is always a good thing to find. If you have a few birds working an area, chances are they are there because the bait is there. Again, I know this electronic equipment is costly, but it’s yet another tool that can narrow down the search for wahoo, tuna and dolphin.

Then there are tools we possess as humans such as good eyesight (good binoculars) and judgement. If you see a noticeable water color change, birds and/or fish feeding on the surface, weed lines and floating objects, chances are, you’ve found the correct general area. A lot of these floating objects will hold bait and fish, especially wahoo and dolphin. After narrowing down an area where the fish will likely be in due to temperature, depth, structure etc., this is when I prefer to high-speed troll. High-speed trolling is another tool to locate the fish, and not a tool to use all day! This is true for wahoo, especially. Once you get a bite, mark that location on the chart. Now it’s time to go back to that area and go to work on ’em. By this time of day, the sun is up pretty good, and the surface bite might slow down a little bit. Like I’ve always said, the fish don’t have Maui Jim’s shades, so they use depth to get the correct amount of light they want. They look up to see bait at, or near the surface like flyers, tinker, cigs and sardines. They also look down for the squid down deep. This is the reason the planer rod is typically the one that produces in the middle of the day. When the sun is high in the sky, it’s time to go deep with your baits. You can’t always catch them where you want to. You have to catch them where they are... down deep. ason Christie finally did it. In early March, he won the Bassmaster Classic on South Carolina’s Lake Hartwell and was named champion of the biggest event in tournament bass fishing. In two previous Classics, Christie has held the lead headed into the final day of the tournament, once with a more than 6-pound lead and once with a 4-pound lead. Both times he came up short. This year, he found himself tied for the lead with newcomer Kyle Welcher after Day 2. “Honestly, when I was sitting at the door waiting to come in and weigh my fish, I thought I had given it away again,” said Christie. “Stetson Blaylock had just weighed in a big bag, and Kyle Welcher used to be a professional poker player, so I knew he had more than what he was saying. “I knew it was gonna be close. I honestly thought there could be a tie, and that was scary for me because I didn’t have any fish left.” After Welcher weighed in and took over the “Hot Seat” from Stetson Blaylock, who had just weighed the largest bag of the tournament, Welcher and Christie stood side by side as the largest crowd in the event’s history cheered awaiting the final tally. On the stage, Christie’s five-bass limit of 17 pounds, 9 ounces was 5 ounces heavier than Welcher’s bag of 17 pounds 4 ounces. Known as one of the best power-fishermen in the world, Christie utilized a 5/8-ounce War Eagle Jiu-Jigsu Jig with a Yum Craw Chunk in green pumpkin/purple. He used a green pumpkin/orange jig until the final day when he switched to straight green pumpkin because he “banged all of the other ones off docks” until they were unusable. He caught most of his fish on the final day fishing shallow docks in 1 to 3 feet of depth in clearer water where most of the other angler were not fishing. He liked the heavier jig due to its faster rate of fall, which drew reaction strikes. Christie, who returned to the Bassmaster Elite Series a year ago after as short tenure with MLF Fishing, was looking hard for redemption in this year’s Classic. Maybe beginning tied on the final day took some of the pressure off, because the third time was a charm for Christie, who took home a $300,000 purse for his win that pushed his total career earnings to over $1,668,000. Welcher earned $50,000 for finishing second with 53-11, and Blaylock earned $47,000 in third place with 53-5, which includes a $7,000 bonus for his Sunday catch of 20-9 that ranked as the Rapala Monster Bag of the Week. South Carolina pro Brandon Cobb earned $2,500 for overall Berkley Big Bass of the Week with the 6-12 largemouth he caught on Day 2.
