PREPARE FOR THE SEASON
As the season is rapidly approaching, there are certain things you need to check off your to-do list. Your main priority is to make sure your archery equipment is up to par. You’re not the only one thinking that way. The mad last-minute rush to make sure you are good for the season starts to bear down on the surrounding Archery shops leaving you with an incredible amount of time waiting before your rig gets the love it deserves. Whether you’re an avid archer or just taking advantage of the archery season, go ahead and get in a month or two before the season starts. If your bow needs any maintenance you won’t have to leave it for longer than normal. Nobody likes to wait, so don’t procrastinate!

There have been countless amount of times out of the 12 years that we have run Skull Hill Archery that people haven’t even had their equipment checked over, much less tuned. You owe it to yourself and the game you’re after to make sure that everything is working properly and safely. Safety is a big one! Bowstrings are only meant to last five years at best. We’ve seen them on bows for 15+ years which could be dangerous. Not to mention that the bow was not shooting up to its full potential. Bows come in the shop, all the time improperly assembled, allowing the arrow to come out incorrectly, causing broad heads to not fly correctly, which then, in turn, causes less success in the field and more wounded animals. And, the list could go on. Having your silent grocery getter at 100%, not only paves the way for your Archery success but also shows the respect you have for the quarry you’re after.
Then there’s you the archer, the one at the end of the day, that has to pull it all off. Are you ready for the buck fever? Have you taken the time to make sure that no matter what angle you happen to face you can successfully execute your shot? Are you confident enough in your shooting to know that the air is going to fly behind the pin, and go where it should go? These are just some of the things that you have to be mentally prepared for before the season starts. How do you come mentally prepared? You practice practice practice! You practice angles, and long-distance shooting so you’re short distances are on point. You practice shooting off-season prey, so when the time comes for you to take that trophy animal, you’ve already experienced live animal situations. You mentally and physically prepare yourself so that the challenges you face in the field are not as nearly shocking when they arise.

There are a ton of scenarios, and just as many ways to prepare yourself for the season. The main thing is making sure you are prepared. Don’t become the ones who wait years to get ready, then have a story of a failed attempt to take an animal. Even though we have hunting seasons, bow hunting never has an off-season. There are constant levels of preparation, practice, and equipment checks that need to take place so when that prize animal is standing before you, there will be no doubt that soon you’ll be able to lay your hands on it!
