One trait that seems standard across the board is that whenever we find ourselves in a new destination, regardless of why we’re there, we always want to find out about “what’s biting.” Normally a quick trip to a local tackle shop gets us up to speed. I often hear from readers that they were in a different state or a different region and found a copy of our magazine at the tackle shop they went into. One such reader recently told me, “I live in Wilmington, North Carolina, and I read your Wilmington edition every month. I was in Mississippi recently on business and I saw a copy of your magazine at a local tackle shop. The next month I was in Key West, Florida and saw a copy of the magazine at a tackle shop there. I just landed in Connecticut today and can’t believe that I just picked up another copy of your magazine at a tackle shop here in Connecticut. You guys are everywhere.” It is true; we are available for free in over 30 market areas, but we’re not everywhere yet. he 11th Annual Blue Wild Ocean Adventure Expo, an action-packed water sports expo for watersport enthusiasts of all ages, returns to the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center April 14-15. pparently there are more dangerous critters than gators to worry about when paddling Florida’s rivers. Last month, reports of a rampaging river otter emerged out of Manatee County, and the culprit appeared to have been targeting kayakers. According to the Bradenton Herald, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirmed multiple reports of aggressive otter encounters over two days on a stretch of the Braden River in Manatee County. The first was received Saturday, March 3, when two kayakers reported being bitten by an otter. The next day, Sunday March 4, two more kayakers reported being attacked by an otter. The second day’s encounters occurred about 2 miles from the previous attack. One of the victims, Sue Spector, 77, was interviewed by Fox 13 News after receiving stitches and rabies treatments as a result of the attack. “… I heard someone make a comment that, ‘Oh, there’s an otter!” Spector told Fox 13. “And then all of a sudden he jumped on my kayak and two seconds later he jumped on me.” According to the report, the animal clawed, scratched and bit Spector’s arms, nose and ear. Her kayak flipped and a lifejacket and hat saved Spector from sustaining additional injury as her husband and other kayakers in the group fended the otter off with paddles. FWC posted warning fliers at nearby boat ramps, but the terror might have already ended, as there are reports the otter might also have had a run-in with an alligator.

s winter gives way to spring, anglers from all over begin to experience one of the best times of the year to get out fishing. Many of the easiest and unsuspected places to fish can be right out your front door, leading kids of all levels to connect with a wide variety of fish. There is likely good, fishable water within walking or biking distance of where you live. Many golf course ponds and retention ponds produce big bass and good numbers of fish in the 3- to 4-pound range. While most ponds will hold fish, the most productive ones will have structure to protect fish from predators as well as give shade during the day. Overhanging trees, grass and bushes are all things to look for. One of my favorite ways to catch these bass is by hooking a plastic worm through the middle of its body (wacky worm) and letting it flutter weightless to the bottom near the structure. An occasional gentle twitch will attract attention, and bent rods will be sure to follow. Surf fishing, another favorite of mine, is a fun and easy way to catch dinner while enjoying a beautiful view. Fish travel all along the surf in search of a meal, but if you can concentrate your efforts where the bait is congregating, you will greatly improve your odds of hooking up. Birds diving into the surf is a sure sign that bait is in the area. Find diving birds, and you’ve found a great place to set up. Advanced techniques and high-end gear aren’t mandatory for novice anglers to put some good eating fish on the table. A 10-foot rod, a reel sized similar to a 6500 Penn Spinfisher (spooled with 20lb. mono) and a sand spike will be your basic set up. As far as tackle goes, I use a pompano rig or fish finder rig above a sputnik weight, all of which can be found at almost any tackle shop. For bait, shrimp and clams are good all-around choices. When I use

clams, I generally place them in kosher salt beforehand to toughen them up. Whiting, black drum, the occasional redfish and the ever-tasty pompano are some of the fish you can expect to catch this time of year. To be better prepared for your next fishing adventure, I highly encourage you to tap into the wealth and resources found on the Web. Surf fishing Florida (www. surfishingflorida.com) and other local forums are great ways to find where the fish are running. A search on YouTube will further address some of the things I’ve talked about, and with a visual aspect, you will be well on your way to enjoying the great outdoors. hether it’s a canoe, kayak or paddleboard, fishing from a paddle-powered craft requires the angler to expend energy getting to the fish. That’s part of the fun. Once there, maintaining control of the vessel while casting, retrieving and hopefully fighting fish can become a chore. Without an electric trolling motor, the best way to efficiently fish an area is to utilize the wind and currents. Drift fishing lets the angler fish more and paddle less, while still covering water to find biting fish. A little planning goes a long way. On a river, it’s obvious which way you’ll be headed when you drop a boat in the water. The same should be true on most waters, whether it’s a reservoir or a big saltwater bay. Know ahead of time which way the tide and currents run and which direction the wind is blowing, and a little map work should help identify separate put-in and take-out points. Satellite imagery can provide an idea of where fish might be, even on new waters. You’ll be able to cover more water and fish longer and harder because there’s no need to paddle back at the end of the trip. If you’re fishing with a buddy—which you should be for safety’s sake—shuttle a vehicle to the take-out. If you know someone reliable, schedule a pick-up. Either way, time spent researching and executing the plan will be worth it when there’s not a long paddle looming at the end of the day.

INGREDIENTS

Serves 2 Cook ravioli as per directions • 10 Jumbo Shrimp peeled on package, four per serving. and deveined As ravioli finishes cooking, place spinach in large skillet • Package of Refrigerated and cook on medium just Spinach/Cheese Ravioli until wilted. Add a couple more tablespoons of butter and cook white parts of scallions until soft. Add chicken stock and deglaze pan. Cook until about 50% reduced. Add a couple rounded tablespoons of sour cream and stir until thick and creamy. Add more seasoning to taste. Add green parts of scallions and parsley. Stir and pour over shrimp. Crumble about a tablespoon of feta cheese over sauce. Serve and enjoy. I used the above quantities for two servings. Cary really liked this one. s we look forward to April, we can only hope that the weather will begin to smooth out so that the fish can begin to move into their traditional spring hotspots. Expect the trout to once again push out onto the flats as the water temps reach 72 degrees and the redfish will set up shop on the outside islands south of Mangrove Point. This time of year, the brown kelp grass can be the major key to finding solid aggregations of quality trout, with coffee colored jig tails being the top producing bait. Triple tail and cobia should push onto the near-shore flats along with the usual sharks and herds of lady fish. Snook will show up in droves, as the water heats up with pinfish and finger mullet getting the most consistent bites from the big fish.

Heavy tackle is a must to land the biggest of the line-siders who call Crystal River home, and expect that when you find a school of snook, there will be some sort of nasty structure nearby for them to break you off on. Oyster bars and rocky points can be great areas to look for snook, and when you find them, be cautious not to spook them by getting too close. pril is one of my favorite months to fish. It is as if, a cold windy door has opened, and you entire into the warmth of opportunity. As of this writing, Spanish mackerel are already buzzing the flats and banks of Steinhatchee, which is a solid good sign of things to come. At the moment, it is mid-March and the sheepshead bite has been relatively slow. Last year at this time, sheepshead were in full swing. The fish are going to spawn. That means, the spawn is going to bloom quick and strong. April may have a carryover sheepshead bite early in the month. April is one of best months for trout fishing. According to data, it is the prime spawning month. Spawning makes fish hungry, and hungry fish are easily caught. That makes bait selection easy as well. Basically, your favorite. Redfish will perk up, as the waters warm up each day. Furthermore, bait, pinfish, shrimp and pelagic schools, will be flushing on the flats and creeks stirring up appetites. Spanish mackerel are already here so kingfish aren't far behind. The best chance to dance with a king is early in the morning, or later in the evening, when the waters calm and the bait pods dimple the surface. Slow trolling spoons, plugs or dusters with cigar minnows around the bait pods, within sight of land,

offer great opportunities. Also, casting into bait schools with flashy jigs, spoons or fresh caught bait from a pod can make a rod scream. Eighty pound mono leader may suffice, but if cutoffs occur, twist on a #3 or #5 foot long mono-strand wire leader. If you can catch them— you can't buy them—blue runners are the number one kingfish bait. Attach the blue runner to a bait harness. You can buy them, but it best to make them yourself. Google it. Patience is often necessary while kingfishing, however; it is worth it. Gag grouper open in state waters—w/i nine nautical miles from shore-- on April 1st! Anchoring or drifting over rocky bottom can produce some surprises. Again, patience. April offers some very nice weather to fish under. In general, it's not too hot or windy, which is better than it was, and to come, so enjoy while it lasts. pril brings all sorts of fish to our area, however, the powerful cobia takes the top-slot, inshore-super star. Most shore line structure that provides some shade will hold these fish to be targeted. Now, onto the fish tale, a trip booked in early January for an April cobia is here. The morning preparation proceeded, checking drags and leaders/terminal connections on the Shimano reals, paired to 7 inch G Lomas rods 40 to 60 pound braid to a 50 pound fluorocarbon leader. The two man team showed up with eager smiles in anticipation of what today has in store for them. As they boarded, the conversation and jokes started as I dumped live bait into the bait well. As we pulled away from the dock, a few comments are added, as to if the captain can put them on a big cobia, willing to hit the outfits that are jig-rigged for sight casting. As I over-heard this, I chuckled to myself and smiled, as that is just what we caught them on, the day before. Two stops later, we located a couple shorts at a slow cruise along a sand bank, and the casting scramble began. As a much larger one showed up and showed no interest in the jig, the smaller one was all about it, as “Fish on!” rang out, as the scramble kicked into high gear. A few hours later, a couple more shorts are photographed and turned loose to grow for next year’s stock. Then I heard the younger brother shout out with excitement, “There he is, the one we are looking for man!” Sure as luck would have it, I turned to see a solid 35 pound cobia cruising by, 20 yards off the port side. As I saw adrenaline rising in the two brothers, I calmly replied, “Now is when the practice casting to the small ones will pay off. You guys have this one on the live bait. Rig the other one on the jig-rigged rod.” I swung the boat into a starboard loop to get back within casting distance. The jig was on deck as the brothers decided who will get first opportunity. The first cast and

he turned to as the jig is retrieved, but no strike as one brother struck a swing and a miss as the live pinfish was cast 10 to 15 feet out in front . By my standards, a good placement. I commented, “Just let it settle there for a minute and see what happens.” The big cobia payed it no interest as it swam just out of sight, Five minutes passed, as the brothers are about to give up hope, the big boy showed back up a little closer to the boat, a second cast with the green and white buck tail 3 oz. jig, landed perfectly, and was reeled by 6 feet ahead. we could see the fish pick up the pace and wheel toward the jig. Steven asked what do if he is not going to get it before it is to the boat. I told him to “ Just keep doing what you are doing.” Closing the gap, the cobia took it just 10 feet from the boat. With peeling drags and shouts of adrenaline, fish on! Keep you tip up as well as other coaching tips along the way, and after a few more hard runs and several minutes later, the brothers subdued the nice cobia to the fish tales ice box aboard the "Knot Mine" and placed another good day in the Up the Limit Fishing Adventures file. rowing up in the mid 1960’s, may have been a tumultuous time for many, but I was happily oblivious. In fact, my two biggest problems were sandspurs and report cards. Sandspurs, my biggest problem, since they seemed a daily occurrence, while report cards, only came around every nine weeks. Besides fishing, my next favorite activity was acquiring any stray animal who happened to walk in the vicinity, of our central Florida home, conveniently located within easy walking distance of Bear Lake. Bear Lake was my playground, and back then, we kids had total freedom. We couldn’t be tracked since cell phones were decades away. “Can I have a slice of bread, Mom?” I asked. “I’m going to take Beeb to the lake so he can eat.” “Sure Honey,” Mom replied, as she handed me a slice of white bread wrapped in waxed paper. At the time, Beeb was a middle-aged stray tom-cat, who had begun to hang around, after only a few offerings of table scraps, after which I arranged comfortable carport accommodations for him. He only showed up every three or four days, and then only to sleep almost continuously, and he then came to vibrant life when he saw me barefoot and shirtless, holding an old Zebco fiberglass rod (no reel) with about a five-foot piece of monofilament fishing line, attached to the rod tip in my right hand, and the piece of bread in my left. He would leap from his slumber (his battle scars still oozing, but healing) and completely ignored by his cat brain, as visions of the all-he-could-eatbuffet, of bluegill, warmouth, and shell-cracker, took over all his sensibilities. The lake was a few hundred yards away, and I began the walk on the scalding hot blacktop road. After a few steps, I would veer off the pavement to keep my feet from burning, but now I endangered them to the ever present, and often well hidden, sandspurs. (At least it was summer and I didn’t have to worry about report cards.) Beeb, meanwhile, traveled circles around me excitedly meowing the entire journey. This trip was not his first to the Bear Lake, all-he-could-eat-buffet, and although it was not mine

either, Beeb would be the only diner. Pan-fish being a reliable catch, both Beeb and I were confident he could eat his fill. I pinned a small piece of rolled bread with the point of a # 10 hook, and soon caught the first fish. I would then un-hook the hapless fish and drop it on the boat ramp, as Beeb would growl loudly and pin to it the ground with one of his front paws. He always ate it head first, growling the whole time, and leaving not a scrap. The process continued in this manner until Beeb, having reached maximum stomach capacity, (anywhere between eight and thirteen bream), would simply hold a flopping bream to the ground, wishing he had more stomach space for such a delicacy, but unable to have another bite. I’d leave him there, and he might return to his porch apartment, or not. It all depended on the state of his battle wounds, or his yearning to roam, or probably both. ey there folks, The spring is finally here the fish are biting, and the turkeys are gobbling. If you can pry yourself away from the woods, the fishing is as good as it gets! Cool mornings and long warm afternoons makes April the perfect time to be on the water. The big sow trout have settled in on the 3 to 4 foot flats and are doing their thing. There will also be plenty of slot-sized fish with them as well, so enjoy them for some table faire. The rig we use is the best and easiest way in our area to get on some action. This combo is one I mention just about every month called the B52-Saltwater Assassin combo. It consists of a B52 Super Sounder cork, paired up with a Jim’s jig head and a Saltwater Assassin Sea Shad tail. The colors are pretty basic for us. It is really hard to go wrong with Green moon or Stinky pink.

If you like a little top-water action, the Rapala Skitter Walk is very hard to beat. I like just about all the colors, so throw what you have confidence in. The redfish bite has also been pretty solid this month. We are still using cut mullet fished on the bottom on our guide trips and it is working great. One tip I’ll let you in on is to not sit too long at one place. If everything is right, they should bite within ten minutes. When I say things are right, I’m talking about wind, tide, and bait. Our favorite bait while tournament fishing has got to be a 3/4oz gold spoon made by Double X Tackle. It’s very simple, but very effective! ello everyone. I am just as upset as everyone else about the closing of fishing in Cedar Key Florida, due to the record low water temperatures we had this winter. The die-off of our redfish, seatrout, mackerel, and cobia was unavoidable with these temps. Bear with us; the next year or so, while these targeted species fight their way back, we once again can enjoy their fight and flavor. April Fools! You better be out on the water because this Spring has shaped up to be an absolute spectacular year so far. Do not forget to have a small pin fish or six ready to put under your favorite color Cajun thunder. Those big ol reds must hate them things as hard as they hit them. Another great piece of advice is always have a rod set up with just a 1/0 hook, so while you pass a crab buoy or marker of any sort, you can quickly hook a mud minnow or shrimp to get that triple tail. The minnow needs to be hooked in both lips and the shrimp

in the tail, to help simulate natural action. That's all I got for you today. I am going fishing. hope this monthâ€™s weather is a lot more consistent than last month. The cold fronts should be behind us and the water temps will rise and stay up, allowing the fish to move into their spring patterns. The mullet will start to show up everywhere and the white bait on the flats. The redfish and snook will work their way out of the creeks, back out to the flats, and the trout will push out a little deeper. I will look for the mullet schools when I am targeting redfish this time of year, and I will throw a bait to match. I like to pick up a mirrolure she-dog top-water, first

thing in the morning. This bait is the size of finger mullet and the walkthe-dog action it has, will produce some explosive strikes. A snook also loves this bait as well. I will work it a little faster if a snook is what I am targeting. Depending on the size of the mullet I am around, will make a difference in the soft plastic I will thrown once the sun is overhead. If they are bigger mullet I will throw a Zman paddlerz, if they are smaller I will throw a diezel minnowz. You will also see big pods of glass minnows. If I run into these, I like to pick up a spoon and run it through that area at a fast pace. Snook tend to follow these glass minnows and that will get you bit by anything hanging around. The trout should start to push out a little deeper with the water warming up. This time of year, it is hard to beat a zman trout trick. We absolutely thumped the trout a few days ago with them. If you can get in an area with little or no floating grass, a mirrolure twitch bait will also do the deal. Pay attention as you are cruising around the flats as well. You will start to see the cobia showing up. Look around any rays or turtles as well as channel markers as you are running out and in. A hogie eel, live pinfish or mirrorlure will get the job done on these guys. Until next month, have fun, be safe and take your kids fishing. ey everyone, I hope this spring has been as amazing for y'all as it has for my clients and me. With the tides getting back to normal, and that beautiful time change giving us a little more time on the water, fishing for everyone should be exciting! This has simply been one of the best early springs I've seen in years. We've seen huge black drums, more trout than I know what to do with, lots of slot and over-slot reds, and even COBIA! I've been having some great action throwing top-water spooks. Gator trout have been hitting it hard along with the occasional mackerel. For the drums and

reds, jigging the bottom and cut bait has been key. Remember, a drums mouth is on the bottom of their heads for a reason. In short, guys and gals, the flats and keys have been on fire! You can do no wrong out there. If you are looking for a simple all around rig, I would recommend a live shrimp under a popping cork set around 3 feet, and just fish 2 to 4 feet of water around the keys and flats. elcome back yak fans. This month, we're taking a trip, that's right, a destination story. Over the years, I've talked about Aripeka, Ozello, St. Martin's River, and good old Indian Bay, among many others, and I realize that I had left out a great destination, Filmans Bayou, located at the northwest corner of Pasco County; this hidden gem offers some great fishing I first fished fillmans in mid-80s but it was pretty rough. The only way to get there was down a dirt and gravel stretch of Old Dixie Highway and if that wasn't enough fun cars were broken into regularly. I remember pulling up along the canal (again this was in the mid-80s) and saw there was an old rusted-out Ford pickup with the window boarded over! As I walk toward the canal an old guy (you know probably about my age now) raised up from behind some bushes where he was fishing." I'd watch my car if I was you". Had some problems I remember asking." Yeah last week some low-life busted out my window and there wasn't a damn thing in that truck worth taking! So now I'm fishing over here hoping they'll come back and pulled the Thompson Contender from behind the bushes, I don't know what caliber he was using but the hole at the end of the barrel looked big enough to put my thumb in! At that point I went into my yes or no sir mode, but he was all right. I always wondered if he ever caught up with those guys. Okay about now you're thinking thanks a lot, just where I want to go! Etc.Etc.. Now the good news coming in from the south is now paved and the area is secured with no problems for several years. Though coming in from the north is still that Old gravel stretch of Old Dixie Highway. I guess I have to admit I kind of like it when APRIL 2018

some things don't change. Filmans was named for one of the early Pasco (then Hernando) County residents and was one of the first places that Glen Pla and I shot one of the average angler segments at. Over the years I ended up shooting about 10 shows with him and I wish him luck getting his new show Angler Town on the air. There are basically two ways to get into Filmans, one by the end of canal but be warned it's an ugly put in if you're by yourself! (big rocks) Or two paddle over from the ramp at norfleet's and then come in through the cut through from the north side. Fillmans Bayou has been the go to spot for guides from Pasco and Hernando counties for decades and offers multiple Springs some great Flats, and excellent structure. The oyster bars on the outside are a great area for trout and reds and the spoil islands are good for Sheepshead and black drum but the fish I enjoy most is some of the monster Snook that hang out in this pristine habitat. Working the outside edges of the outer Islands on an incoming tide can be very productive. The 4" glow chartreuse as well as the glow shad from gulp have worked well. As with any area there's a learning curve to find your way around you got two choices, either spend the time or spend the dime LOL well I'm probably going to get yelled at for writing this from a couple of buddies but I wanted to share a little with my readers about this great spot any questions give me a call if I'm in a good mood I might even answer them. Fish around the rock piles, and any cast could bring trout, sea bass, flounder, grouper, etc. It’s really fun fishing. Red fish can be scattered form the outside points, to the backcountry. It’s best to cover some water until you start seeing fish, as opposed to anchoring up and point fishing. Once fish are located, there will be more around and you‘ll likely be in the zone. Spoons, jerk baits and select-sized live shrimp will keep the rod bent. Our snook population took a little bit of a hit by this past winter, but there’s still plenty around to catch. ixed-bag opportunities are plentiful here off the Nature Coast for this month. April is one of our prime months for fishing, and just about every species we have to offer is a possibility. From trout, red fish, mackerel, tripletail, cobia, etc. It’s time to go fishing! Cobia will be making an appearance as April comes around. Keep and eye out when cruising the flats and running by channel markers. I always like to have a stout spinning rod accessible, rigged with a large soft plastic jerk bait or live pinfish for when a cobia is seen. Lead the cobia by a couple feet and began aggressively twitching the bait. Be ready for the strike. This is sight fishing at its finest. Our most popular inshore species the speckled trout, can be found on the shallow hard-bottom areas, near shore rock piles, and spoil islands. For targeting the shallow locations such as rock flats and oyster bars, I have great success with DOA soft plastic glow colored jerks baits, deadly combo shrimp cork rigs and MirrOlure MirrOdines. The near-shore rock piles between Homosassa and Crystal River in 5 to 8 feet of water, will be holding schools of trout as well. 1/8th oz jig heads rigged with MirrOlure Lil’ Johns

ell forest fishers, the spring spawn season seems to be ahead of schedule this year. Schools of baby bass are everywhere, and other species are feeding heavily on them. With all these flooded areas for offspring to hide in, shallow grass is where the action is. Bass fishing is easy this time of year. After spawning, bass have to fatten back up. So pretty much anything you throw at them will be eaten. Focus on moving baits to cover water quickly and search for the biggins'. Speedworms, are my choice on smaller lakes like Bryant and Halfmoon, while swimbaits are my go-to for Rodman Reservoir and Lake George. Trolling shiners along outer grass edges, is also a great way to target lunkers. Tip: If you spook a big fish; leave that area for an hour, then go back and quietly try again. If a fish fry is what you’re after, then bluegill are the way to go. Panfish are just beginning the spawn process, so they're extra chunky right now. You can catch a lot of fat 'gills quickly, once you find them. Keep an eye out for bass fry rippling the surface of the water, because panfish will be close by. Redworms under a bobber is the preferred technique, and a cane pole will help land fish from heavy cover. The dams and docks are producing a mixed bag of species right now. Catfish have started to show up, and more will move in as summer approaches. Use chicken liver or beef kidneys on a bottom rig, and set out

multiple rods. Watch those rod tips, because a lot of times cats will chew on your bait, without running off with it. When you see that rod twitching, set the hook. Make sure to check a few new spots every time you go out, because fish have started moving into areas that were dry last year. Kayaking is a great way to explore the shallows and sneak up on big fish. There are secret spots everywhere out here. The forest is alive and well my friends. We can expect a healthy rise in the fish population after this year's baby boom. As always, practice conservation and help keep the forest clean and beautiful for everyone to enjoy.

his article is dedicated to my best friend, Shirley. Our friendship started in 6th grade, where we met on the school bus. We were both snotty little pre-teen girls, and we had an instant connection. We knew we would conquer the world together. We've been through marriages, divorces, the births of our children, the teenage years of our children, deaths of our loved ones and everything else that comes with being adults. We have both always been drawn to the outdoors. We were mudslinging in our parents’ trucks, before we could even legally drive. We would much rather be in the woods or on the lake than at a school dance. Both of us were always a little on the tomboy side—ok, a lot on the tomboy side. We definitely put our parents through it. God bless them because we weren’t an easy pair to raise! We were both strong, independent, hard headed girls. Now we are strong, independent, hard headed women! We have always had a mutual love and respect for each other. When I decided to become a guide, she was my biggest cheerleader. Not once did she ever suggest that maybe I try something different, although she knew it was going to be a hard road. She has stood by me through thick and thin. She is the epitome of what a best friend should be. No matter what is going on in her life, she is always there to lift me up. I take her fishing every chance I get. She has the same exact love and passion for the outdoors

that I have. When we fish together, it is always an amazing experience! This last trip we had together was nothing short of epic! All she wanted was a big redfish. that day, she certainly got it. She picked a spot I have fished a million times and never had any luck, and I was thinking to myself that it was a waste of time. Not five minutes after anchoring there, she landed a beautiful 27-inch redfish. That made her day! I cherish my time with my best friend. Thirty-five years has gone by so quickly. Cherish your friends and family and get out there and enjoy all that mother nature has to offer. Some of the best moments of my life have been on the water. rout fishing was fantastic yesterday (March 11th) as I took out Angie, Mike and Mackensie Hulse of North Ga, and we landed well over 80 trout bringing in 19 keepers. We fished in 3 o 4 feet of water, with mostly live Shrimp under Back Bay Thunders. Our last 5 to 6 fish came in on live pinfish, as I just had to catch a few and try them. Gulf water temps were up to 61.6 degrees, up from 56 earlier in the week, following a cold front. I also landed several nice trout on Assassin’s Wakasagi Elite Shiners rigged under an Original Cajun Thunder. Expect trout to move into a prespawn mode in April, and move out to 4 to 4.5 foot depths, gorging on pinfish in the daytime and shrimp at night. Almost any live or artificial bait you toss at them now should be taken. Stickbaits, jerkbaits, hard and soft, jig and grub combos and Original Cajun Thunders rigged with soft plastics on jigs, will all take fish. Look for ballyhoo and work those edges holding the most bait. April is a BLAST! Pelagics show up from down south so you never know what is going to hit you next! Spanish, cobia, ladyfish, blues, and tarpon are all to arrive in April. Gotta Love it. Redfish will bunch up and show up on more and more rock piles, as they move out from the creeks and hidey holes they wintered in. Toss weedless spoons like Precision Tackle’s NEW Hex spoons in Copper, Gold and Cajun Copper

and remember to bounce the bottom every third or fourth turn of the handle. That little puff of dirt/ sand etc. makes your spoon imitate a crab, which is what the red is looking for anyway. Jigspinners like the ThunderSpins I use, will also take many April reds. Use Assassin Sea Shads in Copperhead , Texas Roach, Chicken-on-a-Chain, Cantaloupe and Limetreuse for your ThunderSpins tail. Again, bumping the bottom is the key! Spot some mullet and work the edges of the school. Troll ClarkSpoons in sizes #0 and #00 out on the grass line breaks in 10 to 15 foot depths and look for the birds and bait. 1000 to 1200 RPMs should do the trick. ummer is just around the corner, and south Florida families will be spending more time on the water. From the bathtub to the open ocean, kids need to feel comfortable and confident about their in-water skills. One of the most important lessons to remember is to use the buddy system. It’s one of the first things we teach young snorkelers during Pura Vida Divers’ Snorkel Summer Camp sessions. Campers know to stay within arm’s reach of their in-water buddy. When duck-diving under the surface, they practice one up, one down. This ensures someone is always alert and paying attention to their swimming partner. At the beach, or when exploring snorkeling spots like the Blue Heron Bridge, show young swimmers where lifeguard stands are located, and point out swim zones that lifeguards patrol. Flags on the beach alert swimmers of the day’s conditions. It’s important that children understand what these flags mean and how conditions affect their experience in the water.

Another important consideration for in-water activities is identification of potentially harmful wildlife. During Pura Vida Divers’ Snorkel Camp, campers are taught to identify many local species. They know how to spot a camouflaged scorpionfish, and which jellyfish to avoid. The knowledge is essential for a great experience in the water, and it also introduces children to a whole new world of animals. Many kids get caught up in the excitement of seeing fish, rays, octopus and other interesting animals. The more confident they feel in their swimming skills, the more they can fully engage in enjoying their adventure. The camp staff has found that the easiest way to introduce kids to snorkeling is to introduce one item at a time. It’s important to choose comfortable-fitting gear, rather than just grabbing a snorkel package off the shelf. Call Pura Vida Divers to set up an appointment for a mask, snorkel and fin fitting, or stop by the shop to chat with staff and learn the basics of choosing the right gear. At Snorkel Summer Camp, we ensure campers are comfortable wearing their masks and looking underwater in shallow, standing water. Once they know how to put on their mask, where the strap should sit and how to use defog, we attach a snorkel and have them breathe first on land and then in water. Once kids are comfortable using their mask and snorkel, it’s time to learn how to swim using fins. Even the most experienced kids can learn to be more efficient. It’s amazing to watch skills and comfort in the water blossom as kids conquer each new technique. This summer, Pura Vida Divers will offer two sessions of Snorkel Summer Camp. We work with kids of all experience levels between the ages of 6 and 10. By the end of the week, even novice snorkelers are swimming alongside their parents during a family snorkeling event at the Blue Heron Bridge. ith a new U.S. Customs facility at Witham Field in Stuart, Fla., those travelling from the islands of the Bahamas will have a convenient place to clear customs in Martin County. The Martin County Board of County Commissioners announced a late spring opening of the U.S. Customs Facility at Witham Field, which will process international travelers arriving in Martin County via aircraft and marine vessels, allowing boaters, pilots, residents and visitors to clear Customs without having to travel to Fort Pierce or West Palm Beach. This project is the first intermodal clearance facility of its kind built in Florida. This facility has been welcomed by the marine community not only in Martin County but throughout the State of Florida. With Stuart’s location on the east end of the Cross-Florida Canal/Okeechobee Waterway, boaters returning from the Bahamas will be able to conveniently clear back into the U.S. and continue on their way to Florida’s west coast and the Gulf of Mexico or continue to points north via the Intracoastal Waterway. The Witham Field location is conveniently located within a 10-minute drive of 90 percent of the marinas in Martin County. This facility will greatly enhance Martin County’s tourism efforts, specifically in the recreational boating sector and related marine industries. When complete, the facility will consist of a 3,210-squarefoot concrete block structure with road access for marine trailers, parking lot and a customer-friendly environment. Funding for the project is provided through an 80/20 grant partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation Aviation (Multimodal) Division and the Airport Enterprise Fund. The facility will be operated by U.S. Customs and Boarder Protection. As it is with Witham Field, user fees will cover the cost of operations expenses. staple in everyone’s tackle box. There is one lure, though, that doesn’t get the attention it deserves on the tournament scene these days. With all the fancy square-bill crankbaits and bladed jigs, it’s easy to forget about the tried-and-true spinnerbait. Few baits are as good at covering water as the spinnerbait, and this time of the year that is half the battle. Early in the spring, warm days will cause water temperatures to rise. Bass move shallower to look for places to spawn. Water conditions also play a big role in this. More fish move up earlier in dirty water, which warms faster than clear water. When these fish move shallow, they like to get next to a stump, laydown, dock, rock, really anything that holds heat and gives them a place they feel safe. The spinnerbait is my favorite bait for targeting prespawn fish for two reasons. Reason No. 1 is they are virtually weedless. I can throw spinnerbaits in pretty thick cover, and as long as I’m careful it will come right through. It comes through wood especially well. Reason No. 2 is the unlimited options. If I’m faced

I’ve caught them anywhere from bluff banks to shallow flat pockets and everywhere in between this time of year, so let the fish tell you where you need to be and what you should be throwing. My favorite spinnerbait rod is a 7’2” medium heavy (EPS86MHF) MHX Elite Pro Series rod that I build. It is a great all-purpose blank. It has plenty of tip, so I can make precise casts to targets, and it also has plenty of backbone. I use a 7:3:1 bait-casting reel spooled with 17-lb. Vicious ProElite fluorocarbon. If I could only choose one spinnerbait for the rest of my career, it would be a ½-ounce tandem willowleaf/Colorado combo with one silver and one gold blade and a chartreuse and white skirt. My favorite is made by a new company called Kinkee Baits. It has a combination of wrapped wire down to 18/1000-inch wire, which creates vibration bass have never felt before.

That’s when they found out about a local Family Saltwater Fishing Clinic being hosted by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). “We had no experience with saltwater fishing,” said Shelly. “That class was so complete. It was A++. I learned how to set up a pole, how to unhook a fish from the line, how to cast correctly and how to bait a hook. Every single person involved in teaching that class was so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable that if they had it again, we’d take it again.” For years FWC has hosted kids’ and women’s fishing clinics. In 2017 they added adult saltwater fishing clinics. These free, one-day educational events are for anyone 18 and older, male or female. Participants learn everything they need to know to fish on their own, from knot tying and fishing tackle to conservation efforts and marine habitats. Clinic class sizes are kept small for a hands-on approach. At the end of the day, you’ll also get to try catch-and-release fishing firsthand. Bring your own gear or FWC will provide some for the day. ne particular type of architecture that Florida fishermen know is the fishing shack, usually a ramshackle wooden structure that looks to be on its last legs, but which can still provide a lot of comfort. Some of our bodies of water, in fact, have become well-known to boaters as places where the lucky can tie up far from shore, cook a light meal, rest and even seek shelter from a mild storm. For example, Charlotte Harbor and Pine Island Sound in the southwestern part of our state have a number of simple, one-story, wood-frame cabins set on pilings. The temporary home-away-from-home usually has no electricity, no plumbing, no phone, and a distance from shore that precludes cell-phone service. They do, however, often have rain gutters to collect water that the fishermen can use for cooking or even drinking. Florida officials declared the shacks navigational hazards and causers of pollution and actually began to burn some of them down in the mid-1980s, but consultants hired by the fishermen pointed out that the water around the shanties was too shallow for boats to collide with the structures and many fishermen used chemical toilets. As a result, some of the shacks have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places because of their importance in local heritage, and that should preserve them until a powerful hurricane hits them directly. The flimsy-looking structures, usually made of pine or cypress, can nicely withstand the subtropical sun, the wind and rain. Metal gable roofs and board-and-batten siding protect those inside from storms, and screened windows keep out the flies. The shacks have a good air flow with shutters that can be propped open.

The wooden stilt houses in Biscayne Bay south of Cape Florida have long been famous among fishermen in Miami-Dade County. Standing about 10 feet above shallow water on wooden or reinforced concrete pillars, Stiltsville dates back to the 1920s and 1930s. Some of the structures may have begun as places for alcohol consumption during Prohibition and for gambling, which was legal a mile offshore, and some of them became quite elaborate. When Congress expanded the Biscayne National Park in 1980 to include Stiltsville, the existing shacks were allowed to remain, but hurricanes and natural deterioration have taken their toll. Today only seven of the original structures remain, but the park service has added hurricane strapping to help the remaining shacks withstand strong winds. “No trespassing” signs warn interlopers to stay away, and access to the structures is limited to their owners and friends. Stiltsville has been featured enough in magazine articles that many visitors go to Biscayne Bay to see the remaining shacks. That has provided docents an opportunity to teach many non-residents about the rich maritime history of the area. The above-mentioned are just a few of the different kinds of fishing shacks in our waters, some quite elaborate, some pretty basic, but many with a history and allure that makes them part of our fishing history. Of course, our selection included the most non-appetizing color combination we could find. One lure was streamed on either side a respectable distance astern. Within 10 minutes, Skip had a sailfish chasing the baits and striking one of the lures. What he did is etched in memory. Instead of trolling in a straight line, working shallower and then deeper, changing speed, or doing any of the common trolling tactics, Skip took a different approach. He would make a sharp turn to port and a couple of minutes later he made a sharp turn to starboard. This created slack line on the side of the turn and increased speed for the lure on the outside of the turn. When he switched direction, the lure that had sunk picked up speed and headed back to the surface. Let me tell you that the technique works. Fishing with Capt. Bouncer Smith out of Miami, I learned something else. Inshore waters are burdened with no-wake zones designed to slow down fast-moving boats heading for open water. While most anglers are frustrated by the slow progress in these waters and can’t wait to get through this delay, Bouncer takes a different approach. He has two rods rigged with swimming plugs, and he streams them astern as he enters the no-wake zone. It’s surprising how many fish he catches on those plugs in areas that hardly anyone fishes. Another skipper showed me that after he streamed the standard trolling spread, he put another bait directly astern and close to the boat. It surprised me to see how many fish came up and hit that bait. This seems to work particularly well on tuna. If you fail to raise fish on that short bait, try fishing it long down the middle. That puts it farther astern than the other baits.

Aboard some of the bigger boats with outriggers, captains often troll their long and short baits at specific distances astern. The clips on the outriggers are attached so that when each line is clipped on, it positions the bait or lure at the same spot each time. I prefer to adjust the length of the lines based on sea conditions and results. There are days on the water when shorter distances astern work and other times when the results are better if you troll the baits farther back. As a reminder if you troll natural baits, dead or alive, they should be changed frequently. Too many anglers simply put baits or lures astern and steer a straight course. Successful trolling demands concentration and dedication to details. The key lies in making changes from where you position the offerings to the speed you use and the courses you steer. If you’re not raising fish, keep making changes until you do.
