n early November, 1,500 tons of material were deployed as an artificial reef off Jacksonville. The Starship Reef is the result of a partnership between Shell Oil Company, CCA Florida and CCA’s National Habitat Program, the Building Conservation Trust (BCT). Using Starship, a hyper-aerodynamic, class 8 concept truck that utilizes a variety of fuel-efficient technologies, Shell Lubricants hauled about 40,000 pounds of limestone rock from San Diego to Jacksonville this past June. “Through this road trip, we were able to test the Starship truck along with a number of technologies available today and provide insight into what trucking fleets and owner/operators could consider adopting to help reduce fuel use and emissions as they haul heavy loads,” said Carlos Maurer, president, Shell Lubricants Americas. “We were fortunate that our relationship with Building Conservation Trust and CCA Florida made the perfect load available – reef material – that helped us complete our cross-country drive and create a new oasis for ocean life off the Florida coast: the Starship Reef.” Starship reef will be deployed within the boundaries of the Floyds Folly pre-permitted site at a depth of about 70 feet, just over 20 miles southeast of the mouth of the St. Johns River. There, it will create new marine habitat in a popular angling destination off Jacksonville. This reef will serve as important substrate that will expand habitat for a variety of sea life and provide an easily accessible destination for anglers in search of snapper, gag grouper and black sea bass.

INDIAN RIVER LAGOON FISHING FORECAST The redfish and black drum bite should be good throughout our region. Both of these tasty fish can be caught along channel drop offs, the flats, or even structure such as docks. One of my favorite areas to target black drum is the northern end of the Banana River. When targeting these fish, anglers will want to use fresh cut bait such as mullet or ladyfish rigged onto a circle hook or live shrimp rigged onto a 1/4 ounce jig head. This style of fishing requires some patience but can have surprising results. Fishing cut baits along channel drop offs will produce more fish. When conditions are calm, several of these fish can be caught while sight casting to them. This is especially true along the flats. When targeting these black drum, anglers will want to keep the bait in front of feeding fish. This can be done by casting the bait in front of the fish or allowing the bait to rest on the bottom along channel drop offs. The average length of these black drum should be around 15 inches with the largest fish measuring in at 23 inches. Also, the flounder bite should continue to be good. Flounder are not very hard to catch and are not picky when it comes to feeding. They can be caught with a wide variety of natural or artificial baits such as bright colored jerk baits that typically have a paddle tail. Flounder will also aggressively feed on baits such as live mud minnows, live finger mullet, live or frozen shrimp, or cut bait. Flounder are ambush predators that feed primarily by sight. When targeting them I prefer to periodically bump or jig the bait across the bottom to make it more visible. This is especially true when drifting along a sandy bottom adjacent to channel drop offs or near structure. According to the FWC, flounder have a minimum size limit of 12 total length and have a daily bag limit of 10 per harvester per day. Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. LAKE ALFRED / AUBURNDALE / WINTER HAVEN FISHING FORECAST Merry Christmas!! Reports of limits and good size Speckled Perch have been coming in from all over Polk County. This has been a fantastic year for Spec fishing and we are currently prime-time from now through April. Here in Lake Alfred we are getting great reports of limits on 1 lb and larger from Lakes Rochelle, Alfred, and Haines. Our local anglers are having best results using Live Minnows with Yellow Jigs. We are also seeing many Bass in the 3 – 5 lb range primarily being caught on Lipless Crank Baits and Chatter Baits. The Auburndale area reports excellent Bass and Spec fishing on Lakes Juliana and Ariana. Best Spec results on Lake Ariana have been night-time fishing from the pier at Max Beach using Live Minnows. Heading over to the South Winter Haven Chain of Lakes our best reporting Lakes are Cannon, Shipp, Howard, and May fishing by boat, from the piers, or in the canals. As the temperatures drop, the shallow water in the canals cools faster making that an ideal environment for Spec fishing. Year after year with the cooler temperatures and higher water levels, Central Florida offers some of the very best fresh water fishing in Florida!! PANA VISTA LODGE FISHING REPORT Bass fishing has really picked up. A lot of fish are being caught on plastic baits and some on crank baits. With the abnormal warm weather in November the top water action has continued as well. They are starting catch some specs on minnows and look for them to pick up more as the water temps. start to drop. We are still seeing some pretty nice bluegill and a few shellcrackers too. The water conditions are real good right now so i’m looking for a good winter!! Submitted By: Jim Veal Jr. Pana Vista Lodge • Lake Panasoffkee, Fl. 352-793-2061

Guide Tip: Whenever the fishing seems to slow down this time of year I begin to target docks. Worm flies, streamers, popper droppers are all very productive methods. Target the entire dock and try to get your fly as close as you can. Most of the time they won’t pursue it very far. Techniques: The fish are still gorging themselves with shad. They have been spitting out some tiny baitfish. Keep this in mind for your fly selection. Streamer have still been the ticket for consistent results. I’ve had this save the day when they wanted an even smaller baitfish fly, like a size 10 Myakka Minnow instead of some of my larger mainstay patterns. I fish these up shallow around submerged trees, docks, or weedlines. While the larger streamers have been most productive several feet off the bank. They should be stripped fairly slow to keep them deeper in the water column around 4-6 feet down. This is where fluorocarbon and intermediate sinking lines come in handy. A white gurgler is a great companion to a white streamer when the fish quickly blow up near your boat. Be ready as these blitzs come out of nowhere. Bluegill are hanging around docks and near the mouths of canals. The best way to catch them has been a heavier tungsten nymph drug on the bottom or a worm fly with the squirmito tail on a jig head. Specs(Crappie) are still being caught along grass lines. Use baitfish patterns in white/pink or black/ gold to pick off a few slabs. Try different colors as the fish have been picky at times so also be prepared with some of your favorite colors. Popper dropper rigs are a very good way to fish. Use classic trout flies such as a Pheasant Tail or a Hare’s Ear Nymph is sizes 10-14 around 3 ft below your popper. Local Lake and River Levels: Our lake levels are still pretty high, but lower than last week. The Peace. Econ, Myakka, Hillsborough, Withlacoochee, and Kissimmee Rivers are all at above average levels. Our river levels are falling with the seasonal norms. Lake levels should slowly fall. Top 3 Gift Ideas For The Stubborn Fly Angler 1) Intermediate Sinking Line: (Cortland 444 classic camo intermediate is my choice) All anglers need it, most won’t buy it for themselves. 2) Streamer Fly Box: (Tacky Predator Box is my favorite) Made to store and protect long and bulky streamers the silicone inside makes this the most durable box I have. 3) Guided Fly Fishing Trip: (Shameless self-promotion) No better way to make lasting memories on the water while also learning skills that can apply for all species. I specialize in Central Florida warmwater fly fishing. (Peace Creek Guide Service) Mention my article and recieve $50 off a half day or full day trip. CHARLOTTE HARBOR FISHING FORECAST Well it has finally begun to cool down some in central and southwest Florida. I really enjoy fishing in the Fall/Winter. The key to finding success for me is timing your trip to coincide with the warmer weather days in between the cold fronts. My better trips have been after the fronts blow through and as a warming trend begins. These days are typically less windy as well so it’s a win-win. On such trips the main target has been trout. I like to leave snook alone as much as possible during the dead of winter due to them already being stressed by the lower water temps. Drifting the flats in the 3-5ft depths and throwing small paddle tails, bucktail jigs and shrimp under corks has been most productive. If you’re specifically targeting the big gator trout then I’d suggest fishing as shallow as you can as stealthily as you can and use small finesse baits. If I must go when the wind is blowing, and the weather is crappy then fishing in the protection of residential canals is my go to. Fishing seawalls and docks with shrimp is producing catches of sheepshead, trout, redfish, snapper and grouper. Another good wintertime tactic is to look for areas with a dark bottom. It will retain heat from the sun and warm the water more than areas with light bottom which reflects the sun’s rays. I have select dates available for spring inshore fishing charters and have begun to book tarpon charters for the upcoming season. Tarpon dates are filling quickly. If you’d like an opportunity to fish in the Tarpon Capital of the World for the greatest inshore fish that swims call me now. I will be honoring the 2018 rates for all 2019 trips booked prior to January 1, 2019. Also for the month of December if you mention this article the folks at Big Fish Bait & Tackle will give you 15% OFF ANY PURCHASE (excluding livebait). They are located at 6908 US Hwy 98 N, Lakeland, Fl 33809. They just received a huge shipment of rods, reels and tackle and are ready for all your holiday tackle needs. Phone number 863-815-9492. CENTRAL FLORIDA REGION FORECAST It truly seems like I just finally got used to signing “2018” on our mortgage checks yet somehow it’s already December. This has truly been a whirlwind busy year with all of our VisitCentralFlorida.org events and Open Houses at the Polk County Visitor’s Information Center in Davenport. And one of the biggest changes came in the spring with Camp Mack’s River Resort officially becoming part of the Guy Harvey Outpost & Resorts family. It is still a family owned facility and maintains the Olde World Florida charm but the many improvements that have come about with the addition of the Guy Harvey Outpost branding have made this the premiere bass fishing destination in all of Central Florida. According to the Farmer’s Almanac December will be colder with more rain than usual. These are not necessarily bad things if we know how to approach these conditions, if that forecast holds true. So, let’s figure out what will be happening this month with the bass fishing in both Winter Haven and over on the Kissimmee Chain. In Winter Haven on the South Chain and many of the other lakes around town the cooler temps and rain could finally bring the lake temps down which will mean we will start seeing the bass transition to the shallower grass lines. Keep in mind, if a big cold front crashes on us quickly, those fish will retreat and find warmer water until things stabilize again. It’s hard to give you a concrete answer on what’s going to come about of course, but I’m going to have jerkbaits, swimjigs, and swimbaits tiedon at all times if the Almanac is correct. For me and my guests, we can work them at a variety of depth ranges and speeds, and have several colors from the natural “watermelons”, maybe something black & blue, to whatever your favorite color may be. Over on Lake Kissimmee and the Chain, the cooler temps will be very welcome, and the rain even more so, we just don’t necessarily want an abundance of both at the same time. But I am not here to be picky about either. As of mid-November, the lakes were at extremely low water levels and caution is advised for those who have not fished here before, or been gone for the summer. There are fish to be caught, that is not the issue, it’s that the state has taken so much water and sent it south that any and all rains will be welcomed. I’m not going to be sitting in one spot for very long if the forecast holds true. I’m going to be on the move checking everything from the “deep water” shell beds, to the outside grasslines with - again - “deeper” water adjacent, to the thicker hydrilla mats until we know what Mother Nature is really going to throw at us.

KISSIMMEE CHAIN FISHING FORECAST Look for last months forecast to remain in effect for the month of December. As long as we have cool mornings and hot afternoons, Bass and Specks will stay in a transitional pattern throughout the days. Water levels are once again on the decline exposing numerous brush piles all over Lake Kissimmee. This is really hazardous particularly during foggy conditions in the morning. Spraying for Aquatic weed control has commenced once again on the Kissimmee Chain. How this will impact the fishing this year on the Chain I wouldn’t care to speculate on that at this time. Hopefully more restraint will be used this coming year by FWC and Aquatic weed control on the types of vegetation that is targeted instead of the “kill it all” mentality of the past few years. I would urge each and everyone of you to report your concerns of overspraying to our Governor and U.S. Senator. Just as soon as we all know who that is going to be. Even thought the Bass and Crappie on the Chain should stay in a transitional pattern until the middle of January, there is one other variable to throw in to the mix and that is cold fronts. The day the cold front comes through is one fine day for fishing on the Chain. However, the following two days after a cold front can send even the most seasoned of anglers on the Chain to the comforts of their home. But I see it as opportunity to catch a lot of nice fish. Your key places to fish on the Chain are going to be the canals that connect the lakes together, the creeks and the river below the locks. High winds with cold temperatures push the baitfish into these areas and the gamefish follow them. Now that’s the easy part of it. The hard part is changing your tactics and presentation of your baits. All of these canals throughout the chain have one thing in common. A 4’ ledge and a 9’ ledge that will vary from 3’ to 5’ in width. From my own experiences, I can tell you that the bigger Bass and Crappie love to set up on that 9’ ledge. For artificial bait, anglers staying 30’ off the bank is a good idea. Cast a 5” weightless Senko or a 1/4oz swim jig tipped with a Black Blue craw to the 4’ ledge and bump it down to the 9’ ledge. Once the bait is one that 9’ ledge, have the patience to leave it sit for a minute or two and when you do move it, move it slow. For anglers who use shiners, slow troll the shiner right over the 9’ ledge, set it 3’ to 6’ below your cork for best results. From All Of Us At Water’s Edge Fish Camp Good Fishing And Happy Holidays

Souvenirs 1

Bits of the Fantasy We Left By: Chris O’Byrne

Imagine your Christmas feast; although they are small and delicate, the candle flames flicker gently in the still air. Although the music is soft, it can be heard behind quiet conversation. Although the large gathering of extended family spills out of the dining room, a grown-up sense of calm prevails. Quietly, from one end of the delicious smelling smorgasbord comes an unhurried question, “Where are the kids?” “Outside. Down at the pond. Fishing.” “Really? That’s great.” We can get the youngsters in our life outside to play, exercise, and learn, and the gift giving season is the perfect time to begin. Let’s look at some gifts to get them outside. What are those youngsters down at the pond fishing with? This summer, the organizers of the International Convention of Allied Sport fishing Trades thought that it might be the Dude Perfect youth Fishing Kit. Made by Anything Possible Brands, this pintsized spincast outfit is the perfect length and weight for kids. It is fishing ready, but also includes a hook-less plug and cornhole target for inside fun. The Dude Perfect kit is designed by anglers with thoughtful features. The rod is complete with a trigger grip and a hook keeper. The reel features an adjustable drag and is pre-spooled with nylon line and a simple system to string the rod. For kids who are ready, the Bug Launcher by Temple Fork Outfitters is a perfect get-them-fly fishing outfit. Available in two kid friendly lengths, the line weight and flex are just right for a small person’s casting stroke. We not only sell the bug launcher at The Andy Thornal Company, we have used it in our youth clinics and public appearances where it has proven to cast plenty of line and fight strong fish. As the magic is still in fishing, it is also still in reading. Down By the River demonstrates the power of both. An angler since the age of five, Andrew Weiner blended his love of fishing and family to write this story that “shows how a wonderful outdoor activity and cherished natural places can be shared with multiple generations.” This 2018 Abrams Books publication has been recognized by the Perfect for little angling community with a flood of positive comments Dudes on social media and with endorsements and awards from the International Fly Tackle Dealer Convention, Fly Fishers International, and Trout Unlimited. Our goal does not have to be getting kids into the sporting life with our gifts. For youngsters who have not found the joy in fishing, Lowes Home Improvement Stores is offering kid wood working projects. The “Build and Grow” line of projects, where “some assembly required” is the point, feature The Night Before Christmas? No, materials, hardware, and blueprint Down By the River! style instructions with real words. Whether your goal for the young ones at your Christmas feast is positive outdoor experiences, conservation of natural resources, improved physical and mental fitness, or gains in education, these thoughtful selections will help. Happy gift giving The Author is grateful to Anything Possible Brands, and Andrew Weiner.

JANUARY 10-12, 2019 ORLANDO, FLORIDA By CAM Staff

S

urf Expo’s Bluewater category launched last year as an examination of the crossover occurring between fishing brands and the larger market of coastal life. Since then, the show has become a must-attend event for fishing and boating retailers savvy enough to stay ahead of the trends water-loving consumers crave. The world’s largest and longest-running board and watersports show has packed the floor of its Bluewater—offshore, inshore and freshwater fishing—category headed into the Jan. 10-12 show at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. Popular brands traditionally associated with the waterman and outdoor sporting lifestyle will show off their latest and greatest, giving retailers a hands-on first-look at the products that will drive the industry in 2019. Included in the Bluewater category are top brands like Bluewater sponsor Hell’s Bay Boatworks, Yeti, Otterbox, Fish Hippie, AFTCO, Guy Harvey, Marsh Wear, 5Fin, Salt Life, Bimini Bay, Hooked Soul, Heybo, XTRATUF, Dry Case, Bluewater Gear, Wave Life, Sunday Afternoons and more. Many of fishing’s big hitters will be there along with a huge contingent of brands that appeal to the on-the-water lifestyle. With the crossover evident in today’s marketplace, retailers and outfitters who target only their small niche are missing out on a powerful revenue source. Why sell to just the hardcore boater and angler when you could be unloading cool merchandise on the angler as well as his entire family? “The Bluewater section offers the opportunity for buyers to see the latest in trends for fishing and boating apparel and accessories at a time when retailers can leave their store,” said Kenneth Andres, with Surf Expo. “With our confluence from southern California, the Pacific Northwest, the Northeast, the Southeast, the Caribbean, Central and South America, this is a trend-setting show.” The economy is churning and consumer spending and confidence levels are higher than they have been for almost 20 years. Surf Expo is a timely opportunity for retailers to preview product for what promises to be a very busy spring season for fishing, boating and watersports retailers. “January is the best time to preview and order new product lines before the season starts,” said Andres. “Retailers can get out of their shops to talk with exhibitors and see and touch the product before they order, plus take advantage of early incentive discounts.” And for the angling marketplace, where there may be a down season but there is no off-season, Surf Expo will feature an array of exhibitors offering at-once product to fill the racks. This is an opportunity to stock the hottest new gear before the competition has even seen it. The show features more than 2,500 booths of apparel and hardgoods and a full line-up of special events, including fashion shows, awards ceremonies, education and demos. Average buyer and exhibitor turnout exceeds 28,600 attendees per show. And it’s a trade-only show, which eliminates the hubbub and massage-chair hawkers of open-to-the-public trade shows. Surf Show is intentionally held during retail down time—the January restocking period for outdoor-sports retailers—so it is a marketplace to get business done in a laid-back atmosphere. “When people come to the Surf Expo for the first time, they notice the relaxed, cool atmosphere. It’s that lifestyle we all buy into, and there are a lot of beautiful people at a surf show,” said Andres. “It’s just a great place to be if you’re in the watersports industry. If you’ve got a fishing, boating, or watersports shop, come check it out for yourself.” For more information, on January’s Surf Expo in Orlando, go to www. surfexpo.com.

very few years a new technique explodes on the bass fishing scene. Many of these trends just fade away, but some endure and become a part of every bass angler’s arsenal. The technique of the moment is the Ned rig. It is excellent for big numbers of spotted bass and smallmouths. It’ll catch largemouths, too. And it really shines when the fishing gets tough. On post-frontal days in winter, when bass are deep on vertical structure, it’s time to rig up a Ned and go to work. It is the perfect technique when bass are looking for a meal that is small and slow moving. A Ned rig is a miniature soft-plastic stick bait threaded on a light 1/8- to 1/32-ounce mushroom-style jighead. A drop of superglue holding the 3- to 5-inch worm to the jighead works wonders for making this rig durable. When fishing at winter depths, light line should be matched with a light spinning rod with a supple tip. Go as light as you dare, with 4- to 8-pound-test braid finished off with a fluorocarbon leader. When fish are active, a Ned worked steadily along the bottom is deadly. When they are sluggish, it’s better to let the jig sit on the bottom, allowing the bait’s vertical tail to do the work with the slightest shake of the rod tip. It’s not the most exciting way to fish, but it catches fish—sometimes when nothing else will.

hose who have seen his show “Man Fire Food” will recognize Roger Mooking as the iconic host of what has become the ultimate look at extreme outdoor or fire/smoke based cooking. Each week Roger introduces us to passionate and inventive outdoor cooking aficionados and an array of epic custom-built apparatuses designed to cook everything from 200-pound sturgeon to whole cows on a massive homemade spit. Roger’s visits give us insight into the innovative extremes outdoor cooks utilize in their pursuit of perfection. If you’re an outdoor cooking enthusiast, “Man Fire Food” is a must-watch program. We recently caught up with Roger to discuss the show’s success and rich content. CAM: Roger, your show has become a must-watch series for anyone who mans a grill. Why do you think your show has become so popular? Roger: Over the course of the last 7 seasons, we’ve seen an amazing array of outdoor and flame-inspired cooking devices and techniques featured on the show. If you love outdoor cooking, then you’re probably going to like the show. People just love being outside with loved ones. Backyard barbecues have been a longstanding tradition; in fact, you could say that tradition may even date back to the most primitive use of fire itself. There’s also something very special about slowing down and taking the time it demands to tend a hypnotizing fire and be immersed in the full experience, and getting to eat at the end of that entire adventure. The smells, sounds, sights of nature and breaking the hectic pace that a lot of us live at… it’s needed. CAM: So, you think cooking outdoors is somehow satisfying a primal urge? Roger: When I look back at some of the massive cuts of meat that have been prepared on previous episodes, it does seem like fire and food is primal, and I think we would all have to agree that cooking with wood, coals or heated rocks bridges a gap that is satisfying to those primal instincts.

CAM: What can we expect to see in future episodes? Roger: Humans all over the globe have been cooking with fire for many millennia now, and cultures all over the world have different ways of cooking with fire. I would like to explore extending the borders of the show to feature more places outside of the U.S. CAM: What advice would you offer the average outdoor cook? Roger: Just to enjoy the whole experience. I think the average outdoor cook is a more experienced cook, or else they would be a novice indoor cook. It takes a different level of attention to detail and mindfulness to cook outdoors because you have to deal with many other variables like wind, rain, keeping the fire going, how hot or cool is the fire, what are the hotspots, how much wood/charcoal do I need to add at a particular stage, bugs trying to get you, and all sorts of other things that you simply don’t have to worry about in a modern day North American kitchen with electricity and good shelter. Also, use the smoke as a seasoning advantage. You don’t need to add all kinds of stuff if you start with a freshly caught fish, some salt and a bit of good wood smoke; the work is already done, you just have to make sure you don’t get in the way or don’t burn the darn thing. It’s the magic of simplicity. CAM: How do you select the places that we see on the show? Roger: There is a very dedicated but small team of amazing people who find, research and vet all the potential locations for “Man Fire Food.” The winning candidates have endured hours of interviews and a barrage of questions as exhaustive as possible. The variables are so unimaginable to the viewer, and if we all do our jobs right, you have no idea how much work went into what looks so simple on TV. We’re always interested in looking at unique “Man Fire Food” subject matters. If any of your readers think they qualify, they should email: Contact@rogermooking.com. “Man Fire Food’s” new season premiered Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 9 p.m. on The Cooking Channel.

FISH & FISHING

Feeding Strategies MARK SOSIN What appears obvious may be deceiving. Most anglers erroneously believe that when predators corner a hapless school of baitfish, they simply open their mouths and swim through the prey, gorging themselves in the process. It doesn’t happen that way. A predator must isolate and attack one specific victim at a time. That’s not always an easy task. A frantic school of baitfish sensing predators can appear as a shimmering mass of silver with each individual member of the school constantly changing position. Selecting a tasty morsel to ingest can frustrate even the most sophisticated gamefish. That’s one reason why you’ll find predators lurking under a pod of bait. The instant their intended prey strays from the pack, they strike. When you think about it, you can understand that any gamefish searches for a victim that is isolated, disabled or looks different from the others. Feeding is a tradeoff. Success centers on expending as little energy as possible for the food value received. Unsuccessfully chasing prey for long distances keeps a predator lean, hungry, and tends to slow it down. The easiest way to get a strike when you locate a school of baitfish starts with a cast into the middle of the school. It doesn’t matter whether you are fishing an artificial lure or a natural bait. The retrieve should work your offering toward the fringes of the school in basically the same direction in which the school is swimming or at a 45-degree angle to the basic direction. As your bait or lure eases toward the edge of the school, it is easier for a predator to isolate. And, it looks slightly different than the baitfish in the school. Some live bait fishermen squeeze a minnow before casting

92

it or drifting it so that it will be disabled. Clipping a fin or two also impairs swimming motion. The injured fish will have trouble swimming, and that means it will send out vibrations that attract the attention of predators. These frantic movements to obtain equilibrium frequently trigger the strike. Even during the anticipated feast of locating a school of baitfish, certain factors come into play. As water temperatures drop, a predator will not pursue its prey as fast and as far as it would in warmer water. When you are fishing a chum slick and fish are feeding on the chum, it is much more effective to fish an offering without retrieving it. A dead drift works just fine. I’ve seen that produce inshore and offshore including tuna and sailfish. I once had an opportunity to watch scientists monitor the behavior of a school of bluefish in a massive aquarium as they attacked a school of minnows. By chance, I focused on a minnow that did not move, even when attacked by a bluefish four times. Each time, the bluefish broke off the attack because the minnow did not behave as it should. On the fifth pass, the minnow moved and it was eaten faster than you can read this sentence. Finally, if you are trolling and see a school of small fish on the surface, approach the school slowly so as not to scare them. Ease alongside the school and work the fringes or establish a position ahead of the baitfish. If you prefer to cast, keep the boat away from the school and make the cast into the school. As you retrieve your offering and it begins to clear the fringes of the school, you should get a strike.
