DESTINATION: El Salto, Mexico FISH: Largemouth Bass PEAK SEASON: September-July THE FISHING: There might be a few lakes out there that produce larger largemouths on occasion, but none are as consistent as Lake El Salto at producing huge catches of quality sized bass with the ever-present potential to catch a true giant. For more than 30 years, El Salto has been one of the world’s best bass fisheries, and it remains right at the top of the bucket list for travelling bass anglers. It is a place where 100-fish days are normal, the average fish weighs 4 to 5 pounds, and 7- to 10-pound fish are a regular occurrence. The best day on El Salto? Well, the lake record bass weighed 18 pounds, 6 ounces. The record for most bass caught in a day stands at 607 fish. El Salto is a 25,000-acre impoundment of the Elota River. It sits in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains in the Mexican state of Sinaloa. A yearround growing season and the introduction of Florida strain largemouth bass in the 1980s helped build this big-bass factory. Abundant tilapia as a forage species as well as varied habitat and lots of sunken timber maintain it. If all this doesn’t pique your interest, it’s worth mentioning that many of the biggest fish caught each year from El Salto are victims of topwater tactics. INFORMATION: www.anglersinn.com
Mongolia
DESTINATION: Khentii Aimag and Khovsgol Aimag, Mongolia FISH: Siberian Taimen PEAK SEASON: June 15-October THE FISHING: Imagine fly fishing a river for trout that can weigh 20 pounds
or more. Now imagine these giant trout surface feed on ducks and rodents instead of insects. Sounds like a fairytale, right? Well it’s not. Fish like this actually exist, but the behaviors of Mongolia’s Siberian taimen are more aptly described as the stuff of nightmares than fairytales. The taimen is the largest, most ferocious salmonid in the world. Tactics for catching them include chugging giant topwater poppers on 9-weight fly rods, and the violence exhibited on a taimen’s take can only be matched by the ensuing fight. Anglers can expect to tangle with good numbers of taimen in the 6- to 15-pound range on a week-long camp-and-float through gorgeous Mongolian canyons. A trophy longer than 40 inches and weighing 25 pounds or more is a definite possibility. But the fishing is only part of what makes a Mongolia so special. The warmth of Mongolian hospitality, the skill of its guides and the beauty of its scenery make for an unforgettable expedition. Taimen fisheries in Mongolia are catch-and-release, fly fishing only with a single barbless hook.
DESTINATION: San Cristobal, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador FISH: Striped Marlin, Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna PEAK SEASON: January-April THE FISHING: Everyone has heard of the tortoises, diving iguanas and other strange wildlife that made the Galapagos Islands famous. The incredible bluewater fishing is not as well publicized. Deep sea currents carry warm waters and plentiful baitfish past this underwater mountain range about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. Blue, black and striped marlin congregate to feed around banks that rise to 300 and 600 feet from more than 2,000 feet of water. It’s some of the best fishing in the Pacific, and it’s only about an hour’s run from the docks at San Cristobal. The striped marlin bite might be the best in the world, with fast action for fish that average 200 pounds and get up into the 350-pound range. Blacks and blues are less frequently encountered than striped marlin, but they are plentiful and big. Fish from 500 to 800 pounds are the norm. Topwater popper fishing for yellowfin tuna is off the chain for fish up to 150 pounds. Big dorado, African pompano and Almaco jacks are bonus fish. And the wahoo fishing is good, as well. Florida Keys
DESTINATION: Florida Keys, U.S.A. FISH: Tarpon PEAK SEASON: April-June THE FISHING: Although the Florida Keys aren’t as remote as many of the marquee fishing destinations this planet offers, the fishing is second to none. On the southern edge of the continent, where the Gulf Stream carries fecund waters from the Gulf of Mexico through the Florida Straits to the Atlantic, this chain of islands is perfectly situated to create one of the most productive marine environments in the world. Big-game sportfishing and backcountry fly fishing arose from the outstanding and diverse fisheries of The Keys. Year-round, there is excellent fishing inshore, nearshore and offshore. One of the most iconic of these fisheries is for big flats tarpon. There are always tarpon present in the Florida Keys, and nowhere else in the world do they run so thick through clear, shallow waters during their migrations. In ultra-clear water, sight fishing for these beasts from a flats skiff has to be the ultimate shallow-water experience. The size and raw power of tarpon are unmatched among flats species. The aerial displays of fish heavier than 100 pounds are part of what makes fishing in The Keys legendary. INFORMATION: fla-keys.com

Franklin County, Florida DESTINATION: Franklin County, Fla. FISH: Tarpon, Redfish, King Mackerel, Wahoo, Jack Crevalle, Amberjack, Gag Grouper, Pompano PEAK SEASON: June-December THE FISHING: Take a step back in time to experience Florida’s Forgotten Coast. Every cast could produce something different in one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. Last month, Hurricane Michael lashed out on this beautiful slice of the Panhandle, but the fisheries should bounce back as strong as ever. You’ll find offshore species like wahoo, grouper and sailfish, as well as inshore species like pompano, redfish, tarpon, jack crevalle and speckled trout. In early spring, look for cobia and Spanish mackerel nearshore, while inshore you’ll find trout and redfish crushing topwaters. In summer, the king mackerel bite can be non-stop and tarpon are big and plentiful. Several species of snapper and grouper are always on the menu while offshore, blackfin tuna, wahoo, sailfish and more can be had. As we get into fall, big jacks will be tearing up tackle and the delicious flounder will be found as they spawn. False albacore or bonito can warm up a cool day in the blue water, also. From the mouth of the Apalachicola River to Carrabelle, you’ll find some of the hottest action anywhere! Redfish, trout and flounder abound, and you can cast for freshwater species like bass and stripers the same day. INFORMATION: www.floridasforgottencoast.com

DESTINATION: Kona Coast, Big Island, Hawaii FISH: Pacific Blue Marlin PEAK SEASON: April-September THE FISHING: If a giant marlin is on your bucket list, there may be no better place in the world to check it off than on the Kona Coast of Hawaii’s Big Island. On the southeastern end of a 1,500-mile archipelago in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, massive shield volcanoes protect the leeward side of the Big Island from wind and rain, resulting in nearly perpetual calm seas off the Kona Coast. Three miles from land, the bottom drops into 6,000-foot depths while winds and topography create miles-wide cyclonic eddies that funnel nutrient-rich water up into the warm surface layers. These localized patches of biologically productive water attract big pelagics. Within sight of land, there is the opportunity to catch six species of billfish, six species of tuna, ono (wahoo) and mahi-mahi, among others. The main drawing card is blue marlin… big ones. Kona lays claim to more than 80 blues heavier than 1,000 pounds over the years, and that doesn’t include all the granders that were released. More than half of all the granders ever recorded from the Hawaiian Islands were caught off the Kona Coast. INFORMATION: www.gohawaii.com

DESTINATION: Kamchatka, Russia FISH: Rainbow Trout PEAK SEASON: July-September THE FISHING: Some scientists believe the Kamchatka Peninsula is where rainbow trout originated in a web of cold-water rivers on Russia’s eastern coast. With very few roads and little human population to speak of, this roughly 100,000-square-mile slice of land across the Bering Sea from Alaska is as remote as it gets. In fact, the only feasible way to access its hundreds of miles of trout water is by helicopter. Kamchatka is a place that makes even the Alaskan tundra seem overpopulated with humans. It offers a wilderness experience unlike any other, and the fishing isn’t too shabby, either. Trout that eat dry flies, streamers and deer-hair mice skated across the surface average 20 to 22 inches. Each short season, anglers catch 30-inchers that are aggressive and as hot as they come. And while the rainbows are the headliners, there are also several species of Pacific salmon that make annual runs into the peninsula. Huge kundzha, a close relative of Dolly Varden, weigh into the teens. And trophy grayling round out a diverse fishery that’s one of the most unspoiled on the planet. INFORMATION: www.thebestofkamchatka.com
DESTINATION: Santee Cooper Lakes, South Carolina FISH: Striped Bass, Catfish, Largemouth Bass, Crappie, Shellcracker PEAK SEASON: Year-round THE FISHING: For a world-class freshwater fishery, the Santee Cooper lakes in South Carolina are as accessible as it gets. Interstate I-95 crosses Lake Marion and I-26 flanks the twin-lake system to the south. The lakes are connected by a 7-mile-long diversion canal, which provides another unique fishery. Lake Marion’s 102,400 acres of water are a timber-studded, aquatic vegetation-laden fish factory, while Lake Moultrie’s 59,900 acres have an incredible diversity of underwater cover and structure. This twin-lake system provides unmatched freshwater diversity. Marauding striped bass provide surface-schooling triple-digit catches per boat in peak season. The state record blue catfish was taken in 2017 and topped 113-pounds. Catfish in the 50- to 70-pound class are reasonable targets, and the big-fish population is on an upsurge. The system currently holds the world record channel catfish at 58-pounds. Need more? Crappies are abundant and commonly exceed 2 pounds, with 3-pound-plus fish distinctly possible. The system holds state records for black crappie at 5-pounds, largemouth bass topping 16-pounds and the former world record shellcracker that tipped the scales to 5 pounds, 7 1/2 ounces. Santee Cooper is the living legend of freshwater fishing. COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM I NOVEMBER 2018 I NATIONAL 9 INFORMATION: www.santeecoopercountry.org

ifteen years ago, a friend and I flew into San Jose and took a small plane to Quepos, Costa Rica, where we fished offshore on a 42 express boat called Fishing Frenzy. It was my first fishing trip to Costa Rica, and I didn’t know it at the time, but the over-the-top offshore experience was typical for this tropical Central American paradise. It consisted of plenty of tuna, sailfish and dorado, and the never-ending chase for marlin. The trip had such an impact that it became an annual event. Then, four years ago everything changed. I started some business dealings in Costa Rica, which allowed me to begin splitting time between Costa Rica and my native south Florida. It has been the adventure of a lifetime. I’m not sure I can say what specifically drew me to Costa Rica. I think it’s a little bit of everything. The people, the adventure, the fishing and the beautiful scenery are all truly amazing. The people are always happy and definitely live the national slogan “Pura Vida,” which translates to “The Pure Life.” The diversity and magnificence of the scenery is over the top. Delivering Coastal Angler Magazine throughout the country has exposed me to different and varying locations. Within a four hour drive I can be exposed to the volcanos and hot springs of Arenal, the gorgeous beaches and surfing of Guanacaste, the beautiful and exotic jungles of Golfito and the Osa Peninsula, the quiet beauty and fishing of the Nicoya Peninsula, the world class surfing and fishing of Herradura, Hermosa and Quepos, and even the cooler climates and cultural centers of the Central Valley. The tourism of Costa Rica is truly an adventure. From ziplining through a jungle canopy to four wheeling up a mountain, from white water rafting to rappelling down a waterfall, and even seeing sloths and monkeys in their natural habitats, the adventures are endless. Adventure definitely exists in the fishing of Costa Rica. In 2017 the Herradura Quepos fishery was named the No. 1 billfishing area in the world by the Billfish Report. Offshore fishing easily offers the complete line up of pelagic fish and often includes double-digit catches. This is one of the few countries where catching an offshore billfish grand slam can be accomplished in one day. Last month, Coastal Angler Editor-in-Chief Ben Martin came down and we managed to squeeze in one day of fishing on my 32 Luhrs, Dream II out of Los Suenos. Where else in the world can you catch two blue marlin, two sailfish, and 15 dorado in a day of fishing? The inshore fishing for roosterfish, cubera snapper, snook and even tarpon is also world class. The freshwater fishing offers everything from rainbow bass (guapote) to machaca, and trout to largemouth bass. I have been to many places in the world, and Costa Rica stands out as one of my favorite bucket list destinations. Mike Erickson is co-publisher of Coastal Angler Magazine Costa Rica.

t’s 2 p.m. on a bright, sunny day and I’m pitching pilchards in the shadow of a small bridge not 50 yards from a marina. As my bait turns and swims momentarily into the sunlight, a sudden swirl connects me to a solid slot-sized snook. My line has been in the water for less than a minute. “It can happen fast,” chuckled Capt. George Gozdz, who in 2019 is scheduled to host a new fishing show on The Sportsman Channel called Unfathomed. “There’s quality snook under almost any significant structure around here.” “Around here” would be the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) and St. Lucie River system, an estuarine wonderland on Florida’s southeast coast that stretches 155 miles and dishes up everything from monster snook, gator trout and delicious pompano to king-sized tarpon, jacks and a variety of grouper. The city of Stuart sits dead-center in this expansive maze of fishing heaven, and makes the perfect launch point Capt. George Gozdz shows off a monfor learning these waters. ster St. Lucie River snook. Look for “The diversity in this area is 8- to 10-foot depths with good current something special,” explained Gonear structure to find the big ones, he zdz, “Two systems converge here, said. Photo courtesy of George Gozdz. the St. Lucie River and Indian River, and St. Lucie Inlet provides access for ocean pelagics like sailfish. Inshore, snook is the most popular target on a year-round basis. From December through March, you’ll find the best action up inside the St. Lucie River because the water is warmest there. The stretch from Rt. A1A (aka: 10 Cent Bridge) west into the north or south fork of the St. Lucie River is the prime winter snook area. I throw Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows and Hydro Poppers in low light conditions and pitch pilchards once the sun gets up in the sky.” Generally speaking, tidal stage doesn’t matter much for these snook, as long as the water is moving. Look for heavy structure near 10-foot depths with good flow and you’ll eventually connect. “Keep in mind this isn’t finesse fishing,” advised Gozdz. “There’s no way to haul a big snook— they can top 40 inches in length—out of heavy structure with light lines. I use 80-lb. test Yo-Zuri Super Braid with an 80- to 100-lb. test Top Knot fluorocarbon leader.” If you are looking to stay overnight in Stuart, Pirate’s Cove Resort and Marina (www.piratescoveresort.com; 772-287-2500) is a great choice with affordable rooms, wet slips and free launching around the corner at the Sandsprit Park. or a builder of the finest quality custom boats to survive in the competitive market of today, there can be no compromises. When precision craftsmanship meets thoughtful engineering and a flawless design, magic can happen. The magic comes with a hefty price, however, a price that isn’t measured in currency. For a boat builder to set the standard by which all others are measured, a tremendous amount of scrutiny from both the consumer as well as industry peers should be expected. There can be no short cuts, and each and every detail down to the last unseen screw must be perfect. This all requires a great deal of time. Man-hours. Very few people have the vision or sense of commitment to play at anything in their lives at this level. An enduring commitment to
maintain the highest standards at whatever cost has taken down many players in the boatbuilding game historically. Ultimately, they are all faced with the crossroads moment where either you pack up your tools and call it a day or form a plan to build it faster and cheaper, all in the interest of increasing that bottom line. For an elite few members of this profession, the boats have always come first. At the end of the day, if the integrity of their name or the boats that leave their shop are ever to be compromised, they’ve lost sight of the reason they got into the game. Pride. The team at Bahama Boat Works has devoted an entire lifetime to mastering every facet of the boating industry, compiling a list of credentials along the way that few can lay claim to. From running to rigging and designing to building, Bahama Boat Works has gained familiarity with every last detail of what makes a boat ride, run, look and fish better than all others. It takes these elements past the design stage to the construction stage and ultimately produces boats that draw admiration from everyone that lays eyes on them, boaters and non-boaters alike. The Bahama team has put in the man-hours. From base camp to spike camp to summit, the Bahama 41 has proven herself to be at the top of the food chain for years now. An Apex Predator staring down from the mountaintop ready to take on all challengers. As the entire Bahama Boat Works team prepares to put the landmark Hull #100 boat into service, a milestone that few custom boat builders ever get to enjoy, congratulations are certainly in order. Don’t, however, expect to find them putting their feet up or celebrating too enthusiastically. You are more likely to find them working out the smallest detail on the next hull in production. A detail that her future owner may never even know about but the team at Bahama and their pride wouldn’t consider overlooking.

grouper will find their way into shallower waters. Every year we catch some really nice gags in about 30- to 50-feet of water on some big ledges and structures. If you are after pelagics, use live baits for the best results. You can sabiki up some cigar minnows, Spanish sardines or blue runners. You can either slow troll the baits or flat line while you are anchored up bottom fishing. I would like to clarify to anyone who is wanting to fish and might be hesitant due to the red tide water conditions, once you get out past the red tide the fishing is outstanding, and there are no concerns of the safety of eating the fish. At the time of writing this, the red tide had cleared out almost completely. Try and keep using local businesses and help out those restaurants and businesses that are located on the water and nearby. There are many businesses that are struggling this season because of the lack of tourists. We all must stick together to get through this crisis. Remember to always follow state and federal regulations. Be courteous of other boaters, and keep only what you can eat.

ovember is the month where just about anything can happen in the Gulf of Mexico off south Florida. Offshore water temperatures will be slowly getting cooler and the baitfish will start migrating south. Along with the bait, comes a multitude of species following right behind them. Kingfish, blackfin tuna and cobia are my favorite fish to target in the fall. This year we will have to travel a little deeper than usual due to the red tide problem. Typically, I like to fish the beach area and out to around 50 feet of water for pelagics, but this season I am anticipating the bait will be out a little deeper in cooler waters. The red tide in our area has been out to almost 45 feet of water, depending on which way the wind is blowing that day. You have to find clean water to find the fish in these conditions. Bottom fish are always plentiful in November, as well. The gag

eef Runner Boats recently unveiled its new Battle Breast Cancer Boat, which will be raffled at the Miami International Boat Show in February to raise money for Susan G Komen for the Cure (SGK). This is the second year the Miami-based boat builder has raffled a brand new boat for the foundation, and Reef Runner owner Donna Milo said they hope to raise $20,000 with this year’s raffle. Since its founding in 1999, the Miami/Fort Lauderdale chapter of SGK has invested nearly $11 million in local breast cancer awareness projects, such as education programs, funding for patient screening, diagnostics and treatment. The chapter also donates 25 percent of remaining net funds to national breast cancer research programs. Reef Runner is ponying up a pretty sweet ride to the cause. It is a Reef Runner 180 Bay—an 18-foot, wide-beamed boat that is perfect for fishing and family cruising. It has a fuel-efficient hull design, lots of storage and a roomy, fully finished interior liner. The boat also has a 90-horsepower Evinrude outboard motor. TACO Marine also jumped on board with cause by donating and installing brand new Rigid Vinyl Rub Rail, end caps, navigation lights and poly tumbler holders for the Battle Breast Cancer Boat. The boat will be raffled on the final day of the Miami International Boat Show, Monday, Feb. 18, 2019 at 1 p.m. Raffle tickets are on sale Airline_Ad_CoastalAngler_8-1-14_Layout 1 8/1/14 1:14 PM Page 1 online at reefrunnerboats.com. racey Smith is not your average 21-year-old lady angler. Her dedication to fishing and the marine environment result from hardships she was forced to overcome. Diagnosed with high-risk hypodiploid leukemia when she was just 15 years old, this Jacksonville girl spent time in the intensive care unit and underwent a double stem cell transplant at the tender age of 16. She was forced to have a hip replacement at 19. Cancer put an end to the sports, and softball in particular, which were the passion of her life. “Through all the struggle and pain, I fought for my life,” she wrote in an email that included multiple photos of impressive fish she has caught over the years. “I couldn’t die! I wanted to do so much more.” The new passion she found was for fishing. While the other sports she loves would cause her terrible pain, she can still fish. “I pushed myself to be more active and to get healthier,” she wrote. “I challenged myself with catching bigger fish. When I’m not out tagging sharks for NOAA, I’m offshore or on a pier just having fun. I just want everyone to know that anything you put your mind to is possible. Don’t give up. It may be difficult at times but it gets better!” Smith spent a summer in Colorado doing conservation work and a month in Puerto Rico during the hurricane relief effort last year. She is currently working with FEMA in hurricane relief, and looks forward to enrolling in Florida State College at Jacksonville in the spring. Her goal is to become a marine biologist working to save marine life. Smith is celebrating five years cancer free!

Capt. Alex, of the Harvester, ran more than 200 charter trips during the last year, so it’d be understandable if he wanted to take some time to recuperate. But Alex is a pure fisherman, so instead of kicking back he loaded up for a trip to Puerto Calero off the coast of Morocco. There he served on the crew of the Lydia and topped the scoreboard with the first marlin release of a tournament. This was a great experience for Capt. Alex to fish on a different boat in a different ocean. It was also great to see our local hero make big waves on the big stage! Back in Costa Rica, Capt. William, of the Wanderer, and Capt. Francisco, of the Explorer, oversaw maintenance of the boats. Keeping a fleet of sportfishing boats running in such a remote environment requires patience and ingenuity, but these legendary captains have both traits in excess. In mid-October, the Nosara area was inundated with historic flooding. The Rio Nosara swelled to 30 feet above its usual level and left many residents stranded. The FishingNosara team sprang into action and used the 23-foot Adventurer to save multiple neighbors from the floods. Videos of this “Tico Navy” in action quickly went viral (check the FishingNosara Facebook and Instagram feed to see for yourself). All credit is due to the crews and staff for their bravery and selflessness. All in all, it’s been an interesting off-season. We can’t wait to get the boats wet in November for another great season of the best sportfishing in Costa Rica!
D
uring the off-season in northern Costa Rica, the FishingNosara team spent the last two months gearing up for the new season. Their five boats were completely disassembled, sanded, repainted and reassembled. After another 800-plus-trip season, the crews earned some much needed R&R. The problem is these guys have a love of fishing so deep in their bones that they will not be kept away from the water. Capt. Carlos, of the Discoverer, finished his maintenance early so he could run trips in September and October, which is almost unheard of in Costa Rica. He got out to the blue water, nabbed an awesome blue marlin release and backed it up with big dorados and big numbers of yellowfin tuna. FishingNosara ran a few dozen trips during the so-called offseason and saw the fishery has reset itself into the winter patterns, which bring more dorado and fewer yellowfins. There are a lot of sailfish and marlin feeding on the mahi-mahi. This pattern typically lasts into late March when the big schools of yellowfin tuna move in from the north. The El Nino blew through two years ago and disrupted this pattern, but we anticipate things will return to normal this season and for the next few years.

INDIAN RIVER LAGOON FISHING FORECAST Now that the month of November is upon us, anglers can begin to enjoy cooler temperatures throughout our region. With this being said, a wide variety of Game fish can be caught with the right approach. To begin, anglers can begin experience plenty of exciting top water action throughout our region. Fish such as the spotted Seatrout, Ladyfish, Jack Crevelle, and Snook will continue to feed on small fingerling Mullet as the Fall Mullet run begins to wind down. Small top water lures that mimic a fingerling Mullet or artificial lures such as gold spoons, scented jerk baits, or MirrOLure’s MirrOdine (17mr-49) will all work exceptionally well when targeting these fish. During this time of year, large Trout as well as Jack Crevelle (jacks) will aggressively strike at any of these baits when fishing near small schools of bait fish. Anglers should keep in mind that these fish can put up a good fight. A 7 foot medium action spinning reel combo equipped with 30 pound braided line and 25 pound mono leader will work well when targeting these fish. Did you know that a few of the trout that are caught in our region can measure up to 24+ inches. In addition, a Redfish will also be in search of an easy meal. Live shrimp, cut bait such (Ladyfish or Mullet), or scented jerk baits will all work well when targeting Redfish. Angler’s can find nice size Redfish along mangroves, shorelines with steep drop offs, bridge fenders, old boat docks, or along the flats. Rigging a fresh chunk of cut Mullet or Lady fish onto a 6/0 circle hook and fishing it along ambush points is a great way to hook up with a Redfish. During this time of year, many of our Redfish will measure within the legal slot size limit of 18 to 27 inches long with some fish measuring up to 33 inches long. Also, Snook can also be caught. Live shrimp or noisy surface lures will work exceptionally well when targeting Snook. Many of these fish will be feeding near bridge fenders or other structure that is lit up at night. Anglers will want to fish their baits as naturally as possible in order to win a battle of tug of war. Submitted By: Capt. Keith Mixon Mixin' Work With Play Fishing Charters 321-212-8484

LAKE ALFRED / AUBURNDALE / WINTER HAVEN FISHING FORECAST We are in “Prime Time” for Spec fishing NOW all the way through April. Our water levels remain high creating the perfect fresh water environments here in Polk County. Come on over . . You’ll be glad you did! Our anglers report good size and limits on Spec fishing whether fishing from piers or from boats. The recommended bait for attracting those Specs this time of year is still Live Minnows. As our weather gets cooler and water temperatures drop, that’s a good time to switch baits to Jigs or Spoons. Some of our recent reports are stating 1112” Specs being brought in mixed with a fair amount of Shell Crackers. Our best reporting lakes at this time are Lakes Haines and Rochelle in the North Chain. Lake Ariana in Auburndale is also reporting favorable Spec fishing from the piers at night. Moving into November we should see more optimum conditions for Specs showing up in the South Chain. Year after year with the cooler temperatures and higher water levels, Central Florida offers some of the very best fishing in Florida!! A good place to start would be in the South Winter Haven Chain at Lakes Howard, Shipp, or Cannon. All offer boat launch or pier fishing, so you don’t have to have a boat to enjoy a good day fishing. Our current reports on Bass fishing coming in from both the North and South Chains continue to be excellent. There are many smaller lakes in those areas that are also good producers and worth exploring. Bass are beginning to stage this time of year. To attract those Bass, our anglers are currently recommending Top Water Frogs. A recommended stick bait, Bass Assassin XX Fat Job (6 ½”) in assorted colors, also appears to be working well. The 20th season of Ron’s Tackle Box Weekly Bass Tournaments has now ended. In the enclosed photo, the (8 lb 1 oz) beauty proudly displayed by Big Bass/1st Place Winner, Jeremy Scarborough, was landed while fishing a recent tournament on Lake Shipp in the South WH Chain. Our seasons usually run from April 1st through October 31st. Weekly registration is $30.00 per boat (1 or 2 man) and the tournaments run from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM each Thursday. Prizes are awarded for BIG BASS and 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place categories. The location each week is not revealed until Thursday mornings and is announced in “The Ledger” and on our FaceBook page. Our tournaments are all around great fun!! DON’T FORGET . . Ron is always available for up-to-date fishing reports and locations, so come see him or give him a call! Pana Vista is a good “bucket list” destination if you want to get the “old” Florida fish camp feel. We have cabins to rent as well as RV lots, Pontoon boats and fishing boats. We have a boat store with all your fishing supplies as well. Come stay a day, week, or month and you won’t want to leave! The water has started dropping some and the bass have really started turning on. I look for them to really turn on as the water temperature starts to drop some more. They have been catching a lot of smaller fish in the 12 to 15 inch range with a few in the 18 to 20 inch range as well. Artificial worms, spinner baits and even some top water plugs are working well. I look for the live bait action to really pick up in November. The specs should start to turn on in November too. I’m thinking that all we need is a cold front or two and they will start up as well. The conditions are starting to look really good for the upcoming season so lets get out and do some fishing. Submitted By: Jim Veal Jr. Pana Vista Lodge • Lake Panasoffkee, Fl. 352-793-2061
LINE X PROTECTIVE COATINGS
Streamer Season
Guide Tip: This is the beginning of my favorite fishing time. When it finally starts to cool off albiet slightly here for us in Central Florida, the fish start to respond very well to streamers, and topwater fly patterns. Streamers are without a doubt my favorite way to stick em. Shad are now the predominant choice of fly pattern, so keep it simple and cover water searching for the bait. Techniques: I like to have a variety of streamers at the ready. Having different sizes and weights are important, color is baiscally white or white with some accent color such as red or chartreuse. An E.P brush style shad fly in a size 6, is the money pattern. These flies match the hatch to a T, but they sink rather slowly so an intermediate sinking like and short 4-5 ft flurocarbon leader is key to dropping those flies into the strike zone. Some day a rabbit fur streamer in white will work best since the added action helps single out the fly in a cloud of bait. Sometimes doubling down and throwing a double streamer rig with a rabbit fur streamer up front with a white Clouser off the back will give the fish a different look. Not many anglers think about sink rate when fly fishing. This double streamer rig slows the decent, but still runs deep enough for a faster retrieve rate. White gurglers in a size 2 are my go to topwater when the bass are schooling. The action looks very close to a struggling shad. Look for schoolers on offshore grasslines, drifting is key as I feel the trolling motor can spook the school of shad. Topwater early has been explosive as well, with orange and yellow being the best colors. The bluegill bite has been pretty good with fish munching on small poppers/ divers again in yellow and orange. As far as nymph patterns go the old standby of a hare’s ear has been very productive. You can’t go wrong with a bully spider either. Try fishing your nymphs deeper somewhere between 4 and 6 feet deep. Also the big bluegills will eat the smaller streamer patterns as well. Pay close attention to wind-blown points or shorelines as this will pile up shad and concentrate them. Local Lake and River Level: Our local lakes are still at high levels. The Kissimmee and Econ Rivers are low. The Peace, Withlacoochee, Hillsborough, and Myakka are at normal levels. The lake and river levels will continue to Fall as the rainy season winds down. Fall FOR ANGLING First and foremost, I would sincerely like to extend an early Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. If you’re eating out somewhere, you don’t have to finish reading this paragraph. But if you’re eating in or at someone’s home, please stay at the table longer than 15 minutes. That way it will show the ones that prepared it, that their labor was worth the many hours of efforts they put into it. Can you relate? Ahhh, the smell of a clean crisp cool Fall November morning. The leaves starting to look something other than green. The time changing back. The pumpkins, and Indian corn displayed at areas along the side of the road. And yes, the fishing getting reeel good. For angling on the nature coast, I like the Fall best of all. Winter is ok, because I sometimes like to downsize and head to our many freshwater lakes to go after the Crappie or Specks as we call em. They usually gather up in the shallows in schools to spawn, sometimes as early as Thanksgiving, till first part of March. Bass can sometimes be cooperative in the Winter. Especially between fronts, or when the sun can heat up the water a few degrees. However, in the Wintertime, saltwater tides have pushed all but little water out of the backcountry. Besides all that, when it can get real cold, I’m not too excited about me or my clients clipping across the water at 30 knots, in 40-degree weather. Bundled up, looking like we’re going on a Mt. Everest expedition, or the Michelin man. Then all that goose down, polyester, and nylon, in the bottom of the boat when the sun heats up. No thanks. Yes, call me a cracker. Summer. Well summer in Florida, is what? Need I say more? With the heat, humidity, thunderstorms, ‘skeeters, and no-see-ums, it can at times be challenging at best. It will either make a true angler out of ya, or make ya want to sit on the couch in the A/C watching a game. Hey, good time to do some inside honeydoos. However, the fish are somewhat lethargic, being cold-blooded creatures. Their body is the same temperature as their surroundings. If your body stayed 85 to 90 degrees all day, you wouldn’t be rushing to get that food offering either. You may hope it’ll still be around by the time you
slowly make it over there. In other words, fishing on the Nature Coast during the dog days of summer can be productive at times, but challenging at times. Best advice is to go early, because the air and water temp is as cool as it’s going to be all day. Also, slow your presentation down, and be patient. I’ve said it before, fish are a lot like us, they still have to eat to survive. But now on to the meat of the message. Fall! The reasons I like Fall for angling is simple. The fish have just come out of a hot summer time pattern, they’ve been somewhat lethargic. They feel the water temp starting to drop a few degrees. There is less sun, and shorter days. Baitfish are gathering up. The fish are wanting to feed up for the upcoming winter. You see where I’m going with this? THEY’RE HUNGRY! They can start to go on a feeding frenzy like a grizzly before hibernation. They want to fatten up for the upcoming what? Winter! They know Winter is coming, and all they want to do is eat. The Nature Coast areas, preferably pertaining to Homosassa and Crystal River areas, has a lot to offer in the way of angling and species of fish when it comes to Fall fishing. We have our usual homeboys like Trout, and Redfish. But Fall can also bring in our pelagic species like Spanish Mackerel, Kingfish, Cobia, and Bluefish, to name a few. Did I mention that November is also one of the better months for the nice, big, hard pulling Grouper. What we call the red grouper, and gag grouper, make up the majority along our offshore coastline. The Fall also gathers up our mangrove snapper, and sheepshead in the river holes and springs, for some good time angling. And, we’re seeing a good comeback of Pompano. Not for angling however, but usually around November also ushers in the start of the arrival of another upcoming Winter guest. The slow moving, docile, vegetarian, Manatees. With the snout, whiskers and wrinkles, they look like a Sharpe with flippers. They’re fun to observe, but be careful navigating the rivers in the Fall and especially Winter around here on the Nature Coast. November and December can also be one of the best productive times to go after a lunker bucket mouth Bass. They also are feeding up in anticipation of the upcoming winter. So as you can see, especially around here on the Nature Coast, the Fall can be Best of All. So why not Fall for angling? See you on the water. Be safe, and good fishing, on our beautiful Fall Nature Coast.

CENTRAL FLORIDA REGION FORECAST After driving back from northern Tennessee for our last getaway before “tourist season” starts here in Florida, it is safe to say the colors are changing. We saw lots of colors on different out-of-state license plates rolling south on I75. We saw tags from Ontario, to every New England state over to Minnesota, with nearly everyone in between. So, I guess that means it’s time for me to welcome our northern snowbird friends! So now that you’re here, let’s go hit the lakes. And as a side note, the forecasts are callLittle E after catching his ing for a mild November again, but we always biggest Kissimmee Chain have to adjust to good ole’ Ma Nature. Bass In Winter Haven with the deeper, and generally cleaner lakes, we’ll still be fishing lots of top water baits early in the AM looking for schooling fish. As the sun rises in the sky the bait and bass will typically go a little deeper but not by much, so flukes and swimbaits will be on-hand on every trip out. The weather will dictate how the later morning fishing will be approached. If it stays warmer with higher lake temps then we will still fish deeper but should “fall” actually come to Central Florida this year, you can start fishing a little bit shallower in the grass flats and points. For those who have been away for the summer there have been many improvements out at Camp Mack. It is now officially “Camp Mack, a Guy Harvey Lodge, Marina & RV Resort” on the Kissimmee Chain. Camp Mack is now part of the world-renowned Guy Harvey Outpost Resorts. It is still locally family owned and operated, but we have joined forces with Guy Harvey Outposts to update the facilities and bring new features to the camp, while still maintaining the Olde World Florida charm that comes from a “rustic fish camp” atmosphere away from the city lights. From the new river front weigh-in/concert stage, Gator Mack bar (previously Liar’s Lair), D&N BBQ food truck, and lots of entertainment options on most weekends, we offer campers and lodge guest multiple options to keep active and have fun. For the fishing out on the Kissimmee Chain, we’re still going to be starting out “deeper”, which for these lakes means out in 4’-6’ of water, maybe moving into the jungle, maybe moving offshore. I’m not trying to flippant, it’s just one of those deals that the weather will move the fish one way or another. The prime baits of choice will be swimbaits and spinnerbaits for open water with a worm for flipping the outside grass lines.
KISSIMMEE CHAIN FISHING FORECAST November is one fine month for bass fishing on the Kissimmee Chain and this year is no exception to the rule. Good numbers of 2-5lb’rs can be found almost anywhere on the Chain in 2-6’ of water. Special attention should be paid to isolated pads and deep grass lines. Water clarity can sometimes be an issue. In my opinion, the clearer the water is the better the bite will be. Trophy class bass should be in a transitions mode between the shallow and deeper offshore open waters this month. Look for these bass to be shallow in the early morning hours. Isolated scattered covers and grass lines mid morning until noon are your best bets. Offshore open water fishing from noon until sunset then back into the shallows again. As long as these cool mornings and hot afternoons weather patterns continue look for this transition pattern to stick around for awhile. Topwater lures and soft baits are best early in the morning and again in the evening hours. Scum frogs and flukes are best for soft baits. For hard baits, I favor the live targets or the Rebel Pop-R in 3/8 oz or a Cotton Cordell Crazy shad 3/8 oz. At mid morning until noon I use a 5” Senko or a 8” lizard with a 3/16” bullet weight in june bug or black/ blue flake. In the afternoon, I like to either troll a Strike King 2.5 square bill crank in shad color or casting a Strike King red-eyed shad in blue chrome. The square bill crank bait works really well casting it on deep water brush piles. It’s large square bill bounces it off the tree limbs fairly efficiently and it’s best to have a good grip on the rod during this process; that’s usually when the strike comes. The Crappie are almost in transition at this time as well. Jigging a 1/16 oz jig in deeper hydrilla beds can produce a nice slab. White and chartreuse jigs with a triple tail white grub works best for me. In the afternoon, I like trolling white Roadrunners or a Strike King bitsy minnow in chartreuse and black color in open water. Bream anglers should do well in the isolated pads and patches of peppergrass whenever you can find it. Souvenirs 1
Bits of the Fantasy We Left The author with a few wearable souvenirs
By: Chris O’Byrne
Do we know that our memories will fade? Do we know at a subconscious level that despite the effort to create and live them, our minds alone will not hold the complete record of our adventurous escapes? What are the reasons we bring souvenirs of our angling destinations home with us? Maybe these tokens will be used as evidence of our status, presented in the court of friends’ opinion. Or we might be trying to extend “…the limited, momentary way we come to understand a place on a trip” that Gierach noted. Even though it seems as natural as leaning against the bed of a pickup, do some have an immunity to the urge that makes packrat-anglers of others.? The bringers-home must be more sentimental, right? Are we using an escapist skill born from bad incidents in an earlier age? Or are we mere tools of capitalism? Would that mean that the leavers-behind are more practical, confident, and independent? Back home, these keepsakes become mostly positive distractions. For precious moments we can take our brain out of the world our body must inhabit and remember a different more pleasant world we fished in. Does the logo on that hat fill in memories of a spot we haven’t completely left and can’t completely recall? Like silent psychologists, favorite souvenirs of fishing adventures help return us to an angler’s happy place. Does that mean we are dissatisfied with the world we must return to? Do we gather remembrances to medicate ourselves with tangible bits of fantasies we left? What relics that move us in this way qualify as souvenirs, anyway? Some anglers have a pile of fishing licenses in a not completely forgotten drawer. But are identification badges from shows and expositions worth keeping? Boarding passes? Do these bureaucratic documents gain special value because of their destinations? What about marriage licenses? Are flies souvenirs? Can chewed up and ripped up and faded lures that don’t work in our home waters still have an effect on us when we get home? If fly boxes count as souvenirs, this distraction feature causes problems for me while I am fishing home waters. When I pull out a box bearing the logo of a destination fly shop, I am distracted by the happy memories of that completed trip. (Some of the bad ones too, but mostly the good) By the time I return to the world my body is inhabiting, the boat has floated out of position and I’ve forgotten what fly I needed. To my suggestable mind, souvenir fly boxes are best used for storage at the tying bench. I am a bringer-home not a psychologist, so I really don’t know why we cling to these bits and pieces. But if you stop by the fly shop, we can share our favorite souvenirs. Authors notes: See a future installment for the photo essay which accompanies these meanderings. The author is grateful to John Gierach and Simon & Schuster Publishers for the use of his descriptive book At the Grave of the Unknown Fisherman.

CHARLOTTE HARBOR FISHING FORECAST So, the Red Tide is GONE. The water temps are starting to drop, and we have had favorable East winds to help blow it out. Also, Hurricane Michael helped break up what was left. My heart goes out to those in the Panhandle who were in its path and are having to start the long process of rebuilding. Speaking of rebuilding now that the Red Tide is GONE many local small businesses are beginning the rebuilding process as well. Numerous reports show that many independent businesses have suffered losses of up to 70% in revenue and many have been forced to close. In addition to trying to be a better steward of the environment you can also help by visiting and supporting small local business and spending your money with them. Go have a nice meal on the beach or book a fishing charter or buy some new tackle for the upcoming Fall fishing season. Trust me the small businesses that are still open could really use some help. Unfortunately, I don’t have much to report on the fishing front. I have taken advantage of the slower than normal slow season to make a major investment in my charter business and I bought a new boat. I have realized within the last few years that my business has outgrown my current vessel. Although it is a great boat it’s a bit tight on space when I have 4 anglers on board. I have been looking for a while for a boat that gives me and my anglers more space and comfort without any negative side effects such as increased draft (required water depth), etc. I finally found what I was looking for and I drove to Chalmette, La to get my new boat. She is a 25-foot Parker and boasts a massive 9.5-foot beam (width). She has an absolute ton of space inside and will still float shallow and ride extremely dry and smooth while running on plane. In the coming months I’ll be adding my personal touches to her and she’ll be up and ready well in time for her debut during Tarpon Season 2019. I’ll include some pictures and updates in next month’s column. Capt. Bobby Woodard www.Captain-Bobby.com 863-224-1418

y the time Justin Lucas made it to the stage during the weighin for the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship at Lake Chatuge, Georgia, the drama was all but gone. Lucas entered the event with an eight-point lead in the AOY season standings—and after solid catches during the event, he had stretched that lead to an almost-insurmountable 47 points. His closest competition in the race, Arizona angler Josh Bertrand, decided not to fish because his wife was expected to deliver their second child. It eliminated all the suspense, but that suited Lucas just fine. The California native turned Alabama resident caught five bass

that weighed only 11 pounds, 14 ounces on the final day at Chatuge. But his three-day weight of 39-0 was more than enough to give him the AOY title. “I wanted this so badly,” Lucas said. “The build-up to this tournament affected every part of my life. I haven’t been sleeping because I would wake up in the middle of the night thinking about my game plan for this week. I’ve told my family and friends just to bear with me for a few more days, and everything would be okay—and now it’s all good.” The gravity of the award hit Lucas and moved him to tears on stage. “You think about the guys who’ve won this title—Gerald Swindle, Kevin VanDam—it’s unbelievable,” he said. “I’m the 23rd guy who’s ever won this in the 50-year history of B.A.S.S., and that’s humbling.” Lucas came into the week knowing if he finished inside the Top 8 he couldn’t lose the AOY title—even if Bertrand won the tournament. His Sunday weight helped lift him into seventh place and capped a dominant finish to his 2018 season. The seventh-place showing marked his fifth straight Top 12 appearance in a Bassmaster Elite Series event, dating back to the regular-season tournament held on the Sabine River in Orange, Texas, in June. Lucas earned one of the most coveted trophies in professional bass fishing and a $100,000 bonus. Besides the AOY title, Lucas qualified for the 2019 Bassmaster Classic—his fourth time to qualify for bass fishing’s biggest event in five years on the Elite Series. The Toyota Bassmaster Rookie of the Year award went to North Carolina pro Jake Whitaker, who finished 15th in the tournament and barely edged Arizona angler Roy Hawk for the title.

RIGGING & JIGGING
Tim Barefoot
I
f I had to choose one inshore bait over all others, it would definitely be a shrimp. I can’t name a fish that doesn’t eat shrimp. It’s especially effective for trout, drum, snook and tarpon. Here is a technique for rigging a soft-plastic shrimp with a snelled weed guard that makes it easier to fish through mangroves, marsh grass, docks and all the other thick places that hold fish. Tools: Needle nose pliers, 80lb. fluorocarbon line for the weed guard, 20- to 50-lb. fluoro for the leader, a red or brown Sharpie marker to color the antennae/weed guard, a pre-rigged soft-plastic shrimp.
Steps:
• Carefully remove the hook from the pre-rigged soft plastic shrimp. • Cut a 7-inch piece of 80-lb. fluoro. Pinch it at the center with pliers and bend it backward against the natural curvature of the line to create the antennae. • Push both tag ends of the 80-lb. line through the backside of the hook eye. Leave about 1 ¼ inches of the loop that’s created on the backside of the hook shank. • Thread a strand of the 25- to 50-lb. leader material through the backside of the hook eye. This will be your snell. • Using the leader material on the shank side of the hook eye, make a loop about the diameter of a baseball. • Take this loop and snell it to the shank of the hook, which secures the antennae/weed guard. • Trim the tag end of the leader material as well as the closed loop of 80-lb. line against the
hook shank. • Bend the antennae back along the length of the hook, and trim them just past the barb of the hook. • Use the Sharpie marker to color the antennae. This same weed guard can be snelled onto almost any hook for a variety of applications. Substitute heavy-duty hooks to target species like tarpon and large snook. The 80-lb. fluoro is stiff enough to fend obstacles off the hook point and gives the shrimp a realistic appearance. Fluorocarbon is highly preferred for its stiffness, but some monofilament lines like Triplefish and Ande are stiff enough to use for this
purpose. This might appear to be complicated, but it is a very simple way to kill two birds with one stone. By snelling it, you secure the antennae/weed guard to the hook and create a leader at the same time. Check out the video linked below to see the techniques used in this rig. FISH & FISHING
MARK SOSIN
I
t took me awhile to realize it. Early in my career, my goal was to fish for as many different species as possible in freshwater and salt. That meant traveling from the Arctic (Alaska, Greenland and Iceland) to the tip of South America (Chile and Argentina) and everywhere in between. Travel also took me to Europe and Africa. I fished Scotland for salmon, the Cuanza River in Angola for husky tarpon, and interior waters in central Africa for tigerfish. Add to that probing the Amazon and its tributaries for peacock bass and other species. My passion for travel took me to countless countries in pursuit of various species. Sometimes, I would be one of very few Americans who fished remote waters in one land or another. And, it should be noted that I visited all 50 states and fished in many of them for a wide variety of species. When I started in the outdoor business, the late Joe Brooks told me to fish for as many species as possible everywhere in the world. I took his advice. As the years rolled by, people began to ask where my favorite place to fish was. Coming up with an answer wasn’t easy. After considerable thought and deliberation, I decided that if I had to fish only one place, my choice would be Miami, Fla. Let me tell you why. It’s easy to reach by plane, car or train. You can stay in a five star hotel (if that’s your choice) rather than some broken-down cabin in the wilderness. And you also have an incredible choice of restaurants. Biscayne Bay lies at Miami’s doorstep. Among dozens of species, you can focus on bonefish, permit and tarpon on the shallow flats. Government Cut is the main shipping channel leading from the bay to the Atlantic. Just a few miles offshore, the Gulf Stream flows northward carrying warm water that attracts many species of fish. I should point out that right inside the cut you can catch snook and other denizens. Sailfish are a prime target along the Gulf Stream, with an occasional blue marlin surprising anglers. There are also swordfish. Dolphin are plentiful along with tuna, wahoo, kingfish, bonito and many other species. A coral reef plus various submerged wrecks provide a home

for grouper, snapper and other bottom dwellers, and it’s not unusual to find cobia. If redfish is your primary target, it’s a reasonably short drive to Flamingo in Everglades National Park, where the shallows host a large population of reds. Several other species make these waters their home including sharks, tarpon and other critters. I even caught a sawfish in this area once. The Florida Keys really begin in Miami, and it’s an easy drive to Key Largo and beyond. The Overseas Highway has been vastly improved, giving you access to excellent fishing waters. It’s difficult to find a place anywhere in the world that provides an angler an outstanding opportunity to enjoy fishing for some of the greatest gamefish. That’s why Miami holds the title of My Favorite Fishing Hole.

ooking for a vacation destination to take the whole family—a place where you can enjoy nature together and pluck dinner from the ocean and have it cooked that night? Look no farther than the Bahamas. Just a short plane or boat ride from Florida, the Commonwealth of The Bahamas consists of more than 700 islands, cays and islets set in crystal clear water. When it comes to diving, it’s hard to find a more beautiful place with such an abundance of sea life. The warm, clear water and shallow depths make it a diver’s paradise, suitable for beginners and advanced alike. Whether you’re interested in sightseeing on scuba, hunting while freediving or simply snorkeling, everyone is sure to have a good time. Very young divers can snorkel on the surface and are likely to see fish, turtles, stingrays and more. If you’re an underwater hunter, there’s no better place to find a large variety of delicious fish within easy freediving depths. Hogfish, snapper and grouper, as well as conch and lobster, can be found on the beautiful reef formations. It’s no accident that The Bahamas boasts some of the best spearfishing grounds in the world. It was the first country to establish a Land and Sea Park to protect the reefs. Spearfishing is only allowed while freediving and by use of slings or polespears. No scuba or spearguns are allowed. As opposed to being a deterrent, the regulations have made slinging and polespearing a fun and popular trend. While some might consider it a challenge, the clear shallow
water and abundance of fish work in your favor, and no one goes hungry in the Bahamas! Regulations allow conchs and lobsters (during open season), as well as 20 scale fish like groupers and snappers. That’s more than enough to feed a large family. Always double check for the latest regulations, as these may change. If you are hunting, you will want to charter an experienced captain, such as Capt. Luke Maillis with Reel Addictive Charters out of Long Island or Capt. Jesse Leopold with Andros Beach Club out of South Andros Island. If you’re not into hunting—no worries. You can scuba or snorkel on one of the many guided sightseeing charters, which will take you to swim with sharks, dolphins and/or stingrays. There’s Big Game Club Scuba Center or Bimini Undersea out of Bimini, UNEXSO in Freeport, and Stuart Cove’s in Nassau. There’s also AllStar Liveaboards, which offer 4- to 7-day trip packages. At the end of the day, there’s nothing more satisfying than gathering over a meal and talking about your underwater experience. If you picked up seafood along the way, there are many restaurants on the islands that will be happy to cook your catch. This is the type vacation that’s sure to generate fond memories that last a lifetime. There’s a reason they say, “It’s better in the Bahamas.” Check it out and find out why! hen Bob Sundstrom, of Odin Lure Company, created his Oozzie Jig in 2011, he knew right away it was something special. It worked wonders on the New Hampshire coast for cod, haddock and stripers, and he patented his new technology that allows hard baits to disperse a steady stream of fish-attracting scent. Odin Lure Company is the evolution of that design. With its line of topwater poppers and jerkbaits, Odin handcrafts high-quality lures that appeal to all a fish’s senses to draw strikes. From largemouth bass to tuna, anything that will hit a plug will slam Odin’s FRIGG lures. And with the added attraction of a scent trail, FRIGGs are proven on the water to out-catch other lures. “We’ve all had fish follow a lure right to the boat,” Sundstrom said. “You caught that fish’s curiosity through sight and sound, but you haven’t convinced the fish that it’s looking at something to eat.” That’s where the scent system comes into play. For many species, scent is the most important sense utilized in targeting prey. FRIGG
lures use sight, sound and smell to convince even the wariest fish to feed. An empty FRIGG will draw strikes as well as any lure out there, but it’s almost unfair to the fish when injected with a scent product called Fish Smack. Fish Smack was formulated by Bioedge specifically for use with Odin lures. It is a 100 percent natural extract of the oils, enzymes and amino acids from baitfish. It has the viscosity of grease, which makes it uniquely designed for Odin’s “bait chamber.” On retrieve, water pushes through a rubber membrane on the front of the lure and past the Fish Smack in the bait chamber. Scented water exits through laceration points designed to look like gill slits on the lure’s sides. FRIGG lures leave a scented bubble trail that adds an element of realism and triggers strikes. On top of that, the residual baitfish scent in the water acts like chum to attract fish and spur feeding activity. A single injection of Fish Smack will keep the lure “hot” through more than an hour of casts and retrieves. And FRIGGs are remarkably versatile on the retrieve. A concave face gives the seductive wobbling and walking action of a stunned baitfish. When slowed down, the popper’s loud pops, bubbles and gurgles are like ringing the dinner bell. Largemouth, pike, tarpon, redfish, snook, trout, mahi-mahi and tuna are just a few species Odin’s FRIGG poppers and jerkbaits have caught in testing. There are sizes and colors to match whatever fishing you do. Fish Smack also matches the hatch with several different “flavors”— from herring to squid—that appeal to your targeted game fish. All Odin lures are made in the U.S.A. of high quality materials and extra-strong components. Sundstrom hand paints them himself in Odin’s New Hampshire facility, which means he personally oversees the quality of each lure produced. For more information on Odin Lure Company’s revolutionary new lures, see odinlures.com.

laska, the last frontier, is truly a remarkable destination that every angler should experience. Believe it or not, river fishing in Alaska can be done easily without a guide. I like to call it a “do-it-yourself destination.” The famous Kenai Peninsula is a place I have traveled to for several amazing fishing trips. The beautiful scenery in this area alone is worth the trip, and the number of close encounters with wild bull moose, bears, elk, bald eagles, etc. were truly amazing. While there, I find myself not wanting to sleep, since the summer days are never ending and the fishing is usually catching! My last trip to the fabled Kenai River was a last-minute journey

that proved to be one of my most amazing trips to the peninsula. It was mid-July, and I had been watching the salmon counts and monitoring the run charts for a few weeks. This was going to be my first attempt at catching the larger second run of sockeye salmon. Reports told of massive schools in Cook Inlet that were moving toward the river mouth. Predictions of a record season were starting to fill the nets of the commercial fishermen. As they started to near the river mouth in the town of Kenai, estimates of their arrival at my anticipated ambush point in the small town of Soldotna began to filter in. It was now time to break the news to my wife of this last-minute fishing trip from Texas to Alaska. Fortunately, she understands my passion for the sport and was in full support. The facts that sockeye is her favorite fish to eat and that I had a free airline ticket didn’t hurt. Four days later, the salmon and I hit the banks of the Kenai River in downtown Soldotna. Not only was its perfect timing for the arrival of these large acrobatic fighters, Alaska also increased the limit from three salmon per day to six. Jackpot! For some reason, the crowds were also lighter than what I had witnessed on previous trips. I was not complaining. I was fortunate to harvest my limit each day. With easy limits of salmon in the morning, I found time to head to the Russian River for some rainbow trout on the fly. This is where I had a 15-foot encounter with a momma bear and her two cubs. Fortunately, she didn’t feel threatened as the cubs were crossing the river on a fallen tree. She glanced at me, then to her cubs, back at me, and proceeded to follow her cubs across the river. I will never forget the sheer awe of that experience. A visit to Kenai Peninsula would not be complete without a hike to view Exit Glacier and the Harding Icefields. I have made this hike three times, and if I ever return I will definitely do it again. Capt. Michael Okruhlik is the inventor of Controlled Descent Lures and the owner of www.MyCoastOutdoors.com.

FLY FISHING
Redfish & Tarpon NOW!
T
here may be no better saltwater fish to take on the fly than the tarpon. Hard fighting, high jumping and beauty make this gamefish the holy grail of saltwater fly fishing. However, targeting tarpon on the fly might seem a little intimidating to some. The thought of making a 60-foot cast in a 15-knot wind and presenting a fly to a fish pushing 100 pounds keeps some anglers from venturing onto the flats. Anyone looking to tangle with a tarpon on the fly should first get their chops down by targeting baby tarpon. There is no better year-round fly fishing destination for baby tarpon than the Yucatan Peninsula. Campeche My first experience with Yucatan baby tarpon was the in the Campeche area. The city of Campeche is a wonderful colonial community nestled along the mangrove-lined coast six hours west of Cancun. The city has spec-
t a r p on t o grow up to 40 pounds. Anglers make casts to large schools of rolling tarpon over shallow eel grass flats early in the morning and late in the afternoon. The town of San Felipe is quaint and offers some of the best local seafood in the Yucatan. Rods, Reels And Tackle The tackle set up for Yucatan tarpon is simple. I carry two rigs. The workhorse is a 9-foot, 8-weight rod matched with a large arbor reel that can hold 200 yards of 20- or 30-pound backing. I fish a saltwater taper floating line. The second set up is a 9-foot, 9-weight rod and reel matched with a 30-foot intermediate sink tip and a shorter leader of 7 to 9 feet. This outfit works great subsurface. Leaders

tacular views of the ocean, and the town square is highlighted by an amazing cathedral that towers over the city. The fishing is just as spectacular! Within a short panga ride from your hotel, you can cast flies to rolling tarpon on the open-water flats. Tarpon here are accommodating, often hitting poppers or a well-placed subsurface fly. Once hooked, baby tarpon put on a spectacular show, burning fly line off reels and making their trademark jumps.

Flies My favorite flies for baby tarpon are size 2 Gurglers and Toad patterns. Both these flies will cover any situation you may encounter. My go-to colors are red/ black, chartreuse/white and purple/black. Baby tarpon can be spooky, so keep the fly line out of the tarpon’s field of vision, especially in calm conditions. I suggest a 10- to 12foot leader of 20-pound test with a floating line. You’ll also need a short 40-pound bite tippet.
