ishing has been outstanding lately, I have been from the Everglades to the Patch Reefs and the fish are so hungry and the pressure so light light that if you find a fish it will probably eat anything you throw at it. Just last week I had a client in town for a 1/2 day of patch fishing after an hour of pulling in yellowtail and mangroves on light tackle rods he told me about a trip out west where he caught a trout on fly so I asked if would like to try a bit of saltwater fly fishing. He was up for it and we had a great time catching snapper off the surface on an 8wt flyrod. In the backcountry the snook and Tarpon fishing has been great on live bait, Capt. Randy Towe and I recently had a 2 boat trip to the glades where we cast netted some live finger mullet and put them out in the creeks for a great day of fishing. I like to use a 20lb spin rod when fishing up in the creeks because you never know whether you are going to get a redfish of a 40lb tarpon, use a 3/0 circle hook with a rod length of 40lb fluorocarbon and try one on a cork and another one drifting back in the current or along a shoreline. I have some dates open if you are looking to get out and spend a day on the water.

With so many ballyhoo on the reef this time of year it’s important to “match the hatch”. We begin each morning by anchoring up on the shallow patch reefs chumming the waters and waiting for these baitfish to school up behind the boat in swarms. Catching these guys can be tricky, using a #12 hairhook tipped with small piece of shrimp under a bobber will usually do the trick. A couple throws with the cast net will top the well off, we go through A LOT of bait when the bite is on. There has been quite a few sailfish showing up in the shallows along the edge of the reef chasing large schools of ballyhoo, so be prepared with multiple baits ready to cast as there are usually more the one fish in the area. Most of this action will take place on the edge in water from twenty to sixty feet. Mahi, cero mackerel and yellow jack will get in the mix as well. Keep an eye out for frigate birds hanging on the edge as they will point you to this full throttle action. Grouper season closes on the first of the year, so make sure you get your fill of these delicious bottom fish. With the water temps in the mid seventies a lot grouper make there way into the shallow water for the winter, so there are so many ways to target them. From soaking whole live ballyhoo on the bottom to trolling for them. Trolling large lipped plugs over the patch reefs is an exciting way to find a couple for dinner, when they smash a lure there’s no doubt whether or not you have one on. You’ll find a mix of blacks, gags and reds on the reef. The patch reefs are providing plenty of rod bending and cooler filling action this month. Aside from the grouper, there are plenty of mutton snapper, yellowtail snapper, mangrove snapper, lane snapper, yellow jack, cero mackerel. All of this action takes place from eight to forty feet of water. When the weather is too uncomfortable to venture further offshore finding patches well inside of the outer barrier reefs is a solid go to plan. With much of the best fishing is when the water is the murkiest. There are a good number of wahoo making there way back to the dock, as well as some blackfin tuna and mahi. Trolling skirted ballyhoo at speeds of seven to twelve knots is the go to when targeting these speedsters. Hanging around depths anywhere from 120-300 feet of water will have you fishing in the middle of “wahoo country”. You want to cover as much water as possible so carving zig-zags up and down the edge will usually result in bites. There’s shopping to do and cookies to bake and houses to decorate. But you don’t want to miss some of the best fishing the Keys have to offer! The reef will make all your Christmas dreams come true, with a bite that is on fire. Snappers, groupers, king and cero mackerel, cobias – you name it, we got it going on. The shallower patches tend to hold the most fish this time of year, due to the presence of loads of ballyhoo. You’ll find plenty of yellowtail, mangrove and mutton snapper, black, red and gag grouper all occupying the same areas. All but the yellowtails will eat a variety of live baits, such as pilchards, pinfish and ballyhoo. The ‘tails prefer cut baits or shrimp. The snappers feed aggressively this time of year. Because of this, you need to use copious amounts of chum. On the days we find them reluctant, we spice our frozen block chum with SnapperUp and ChumDrop from Aquatic Nutrition. This spurs on the feeding activity of the snappers which, in turn, creates a frenzy behind your boat that other species can’t resist. Everything imaginable is drawn to the increased activity. Quite possibly, especially if there are ballyhoo present in your slick, you’ll even have sailfish show up. So, be sure to have a live ballyhoo ready to pitch to them for a sure-fire way to liven up your snapper fishing experience. Speaking of sailfish, they showed up this year in mid-October. Fishing for them has been consistently good ever since, and we expect it to remain so for December. Ballyhoo is the prime food source for the sailfish this time of year. Major amounts of this baitfish have been pushing out from the bayside into the Atlantic, which should hold the sailfish in and around the reef for quite some time. Mornings and evenings are the best times to target spraying sails, or all day long in cloudy conditions. Our usual midday tactic during December is to gather a bunch of live ballyhoo and put a spread out anywhere from 100 to 120 feet of water, as this is the area where the sailfish hang when not actively pursuing the ballyhoo up in the shallows in 20 to 30 feet. They will often attack a wayward ‘hoo that has wandered too far offshore. Mixed in with the sailfish, we find dolphin, blackfin tuna, wahoo and king mackerel. Not a bad bycatch when you’re sport fishing! For the wahoo and kings, we like to fish a deep bait about half way off the bottom or wherever the thermocline might be located. Pilchards and cigar minnows are best for this method. On the Atlantic wrecks, there should be copious amounts of mutton snapper, am-
berjack, kingfish and wahoo. Live baits are key, including ballyhoo, pilchards, pinfish and small blue runners. You can also expect to find large porgy in these zones. Shrimp is crucial for these tasty critters. Cero mackerel and mid-size kings fill out the offerings in these regions. Live ballyhoo, pilchards or small blue runners do the trick for these toothy fish. Out in Florida Bay and around the bridges, we have good action on mangrove snapper. Small live pilchards and pinfish are your best choices as well as shrimp. In the expansive grassy areas eight to ten miles out in the bay is where we also find massive amounts of Spanish mackerel. Shrimp on a jighead, small shiny spoons, small bucktails or live pilchards work best. Make sure you have a small, six- to eight-inch, trace of wire to prevent bite-offs. In the Gulf of Mexico, we expect good fishing on the wrecks for cobia, gag grouper, Goliath grouper, sharks and mangrove snapper. ovember is coming to an end and oh boy what a month it was! Good warm weather really kept the water from cooling down too much, keeping the inshore bite red hot. In a time when cold fronts can really slow down the shallow water bite, we enjoyed a great month of fishing. Very large bonefish were quite abundant. I actually found fish that were tailing so hard in such shallow water, I was unable to pole my Hewes Bonefisher any shallower to get to them. Permit were up and about on the prowl as well. Lots of bait swimming around the shallow water with quite a few small tarpon out and about. They were very cooperative to eat small flies. Off shore has been very hit or miss. Funky water has kept the major push of pelagic from moving into the shallow water. On the flip side the mangrove and yellowtail snapper bite has been unbelievable. Some very nice groupers were biting as well. It seemed the shallower on the reef fished, the better. The sailfish bite was pretty good despite not having the greatest water all the time. Live ballyhoo off the edge of the reef seemed to provide the best action. With December approaching I am getting pumped. Although the water has been weird, off shore fishing in the Lower Keys is like a bomb waiting to go off. As soon as the wind and current gets right, it will go off. December is my absolute favorite month to fish in the Florida Keys. Options are wide open. It is the last month grouper is open and is always a hot bite. Black, gag and red groupers push into the shallow water, usually 20-30 ft to feast on the large ballyhoo schools that work their way down the reefline. The cooler water kills most algae and produces nice clear water on the reefs. Sailfish and mahi mahi can be caught right on top of the reef in 15-40 ft of water. When these offshore quarry move into the shallow water they display an incredibly bright array of colors quite different from when they are out in the deep blue. December is a great time to target wahoo and blackfin tuna as well. All kinds of species work our way down here following the large schools of bait. Large mutton snappers in the 10-20lb range will be quite common everywhere from Hawks channel patches to the deep reefs. Great time of year to fish. My favorite! A
s we approach the close of grouper season, more commonly known as New Year’s Eve, I have to marvel about some of the spectacular dives we’ve done this year. In the two months since we faced Irma’s wrath I have watched the visibility improve every day. Great conditions this past month have encouraged us to get out and shoot some nice fish. The morning of our first spearing trip since the big storm was picture perfect. It had been a few weeks and the crew was itching to get out there to test out the new line of Koah guns we had just received. Calm water beckoned us as we left the dock. At our first spot the current was moving at a good pace so I knew we had to drop like an anchor. The water was crystal clear and I had a feeling there would be something big on the bottom. As we got close to the wreck, we were aiming for, I could feel the current was just as strong at the bottom. Bam! My dive buddy shot a snapper. I saw a couple lion fish and decided to go after them. I had my head upside down in the wreck when I heard her shoot again. When I turned around all I could see was a huge cloud of sand and a struggling fish. Realizing I couldn’t overpower the current I had to wait for the fight to finish and them to drift toward me. As they got closer I realized my dive buddy was so excited because it was her first black grouper! Elated with her success we continued our dive. We kept swimming down the reef and encountered moray eels, a huge school of blue runners and we even saw a turtle. Our picture perfect day ended with a memorable photo opportunity, so we snapped some shots and headed home. We utilized the Koah euro 100 and a 58” Koah fat back as our spearguns of choice that day. Both guns proved accurate and powerful
right out of the box. The beauty and attention to detail is eye catching and prove to be workhorses in the water. Spearing a nice fish is one of the best parts of working in the dive industry. Helping my dive buddy capture her first black grouper was an amazing feeling and more rewarding than shooting one on my own. We are truly back in business and loving it. ecember fishing reminds me of Christmas. There are so many different fisheries going off at once. In the blue water the blackfin tuna fishing on the troll with small artificials is a blast early morning and late afternoon. The sailfish are settling in for the winter bite. Whether you are trolling for them in 150-350 feet of water or sight fishing them in 15 feet of water up on top of the reef. The reef action is going to be awesome with ballyhoo stacked up it brings in the mutton snappers, the cero mackerel and of course the yellowtail will be there to greet you. Make sure you cast net some live ballyhoo for the sprays and the fun of sight fishing in the shallows. With all this setting up on the reef a day or two of south or southeast winds will fire up the dolphin between 200 and 600 feet of water. The cooler water will also concentrate the grouper in the shallower water. In short on the Atlantic side with a cold front arriving about every 5 to 7 On the days when the North wind abates the Gulf of Mexico will come alive. Whether you are chasing the spanish mackerel in the near waters or the cobia on the wrecks. The action is fast and furious so be prepared with a couple live baits in the well or at least a swimming artificial (storm lure). The wrecks will also be home to large numbers of sharks. If you want to test your gear it is always a blast. The flats will be cooling off and we will chase the warmer waters. The seatrout will return in large numbers with the cooler water. There will still be some resident tarpon and bonefish and permit but the main focus will switch to barracudas, jacks, snappers and cobia. Barracudas in the flats are a totally different fish in the shallows they run and jump and fight like no other. It is one of the truly awesome gamefish for the flats in the winter months. They are even more fun on fly. So all in all as the winter months bring cold front the water will cool and the fishing will get hot. o doubt Harvey and Irma hit our southern coastline very hard. We as communities mobilized immediately to come to the aid of friends, neighbors and in many cases total strangers. If you fish or live on the coast, no one is a complete stranger. We’ve had several wet years, and these hurricanes have added more water to our estuary systems. They’ve also pushed out the shrimp early this year into the main bays, so that might help a little this year in terms of the typical winter big trout pattern. There will still be a large shrimp crop that will come into the bays later, and it’s the exit of the shrimp and menhaden that typically triggers the typical winter big trout pattern and a move to a more mullet, perch or white bait diet. Big trout also target sand trout or Gulf trout that are working shrimp. So despite the fact that big trout don’t eat a lot of shrimp, the movements of shrimp will still pull big trout to the main bays in the fall. The key is locating trout that ignore this pattern and remain shallow feeding on mullet, perch, white bait and small trout. Also, watch your salinity levels as big sow trout begin to move out of areas that are below 5ppt salinity on the bottom. You might have to target areas closer to inlets and passes this winter to find those big sows in the mud and grass, and mud and oysters. Tobin created TroutSupport.com.
