CHANGE OF SEASONS

By: Beth Steele

The deep blue waters have been cooperating perfectly this month with mostly 1-2 ft. seas. It’s been so calm like a lake, but this time of the year it always seems to be extremely hot.

The mahi and mutton snapper have been abundant and nice in size. Swordfishing has also been on point (no pun intended.) Deep dropping season has ended for certain species, which is always a bummer as it is one of my favorite fishing techniques, but also gives us anglers the opportunity to fish for something different. With some luck, I recently tagged and released three swordfish and kept an additional two for the friends and family to enjoy. We saw so many dolphins on the last trip out as they just seemed to be everywhere! Dolphins are so much fun to watch, and it is always a beautiful sight to see them dancing in front of the sunrises and sunsets.

I lucked out with another big golden tile fish. It’s kind of crazy the number of ways you can cook a single fish, but no matter how you cook it, nothing beats fresh fish!

I’m super excited for mini season and it is definitely one of the busiest times of the year in The Florida Keys. Captains are thriving with all the trips they are booking, and spots are filling up quick. Make sure to book your next fishing charter with Hooker Booker!
