inter fishing in the Florida Keys can be a double-edged sword. This time of year can be limited by more frequent windy days. However, some of our best fishing occurs very close to land this time of year, and you don’t have to go far to get into the heart of it. Snapper are always a viable option on the reef, and targeting them also provides the opportunity to fill up the livewell with fresh ballyhoo to use for sailfish, which will be showering bait under diving frigates. If you happen to get out there on a sporty day, and the thought of rocking on anchor first thing in the morning makes your stomach turn, wahoo might be a better option. Trolling lures can be productive for targeting wahoo, and reduces the rocking of the boat that causes seasickness. Utilizing deep-diving lures, planers and trolling sinkers, there are countless ways to set up an efficient wahoo spread that can be pulled at varying speeds. Since wahoo like their baits moving quickly, high-speed trolling is a great way to target them while lessening other species as bycatch. Another great option for wahoo fishing is using live bait. This method is more exciting, and uses bait that can be acquired without dropping anchor. With wahoo rigs already set with wire leaders, and extra prerigged leaders on hand, head out to the wrecks to catch fresh bait. When targeting bigger baits like bonita, blue runners and goggle eyes for wahoo, use a heavier rod and reel, with the appropriately overpowered sabiki rig. Accounting for tangles, breakoffs and unwanted mackerel attention, make sure to have more than a few extra sabiki rigs on board. Affix a weight to the sabiki and drop it down to fill the well with blue runners, or troll the sabiki over schools of bonita, hooking them immediately to the wahoo rig and sending them back out. Power drift or bump troll a spread of live baits with some weightless, flatlined on the surface, or even under a kite, and others at varying depths with a breakaway weight or downrigger. Watching a hungry wahoo skyrocket on a surface bait provides all the adrenaline needed to knock any lingering seasickness out of you. Wahoo are excellent table fare, and they are also one of the best fighting fish you can target. Keep in mind that if your line goes slack, they might be swimming toward the boat. It is a wahoo until it’s not a wahoo, so keep reeling until you see the end of your line. Charter fishing in the Florida Keys is busy during the winter, so make sure to book your charter in advance. old water makes catching fish more difficult, right? Not with crappie, according to allaround outdoorswoman Terrie Huffmaster. She looks forward to deep winter, when she can load the boat with the biggest slabs of the year. Huffmaster is a South Georgia farm girl from Quitman, way down on the Florida border, so she calls crappie speckled perch, or specks for short. “You catch the bigger specks in wintertime,” she said. “I like to go into the deeper water trolling for them.” A great thing about crappie is they’re predictable. In spring they move shallow to spawn, but throughout the rest of the year they are nomads in search of comfortable water temperatures. You’ll always find them near structure or cover, and they are usually schooled up tightly. Huffmaster fishes for specks on Lake
Seminole, a nearly 40,000-acre impoundment that straddles the Georgia/Florida border. It’s a relatively shallow lake, full of stumps, brush and submerged grass. When Huffmaster says “deeper water,” she means the deepest water Seminole has, which is 25 to 30 feet. Trolling delivers both quality and quantity when water temps are in the mid to high 50s. But Huffmaster isn’t looking for a 30-fish limit. She’s hunting 10 or so giant specks in the 15- to 18inch range. She catches a lot of smaller fish in the process, but she throws those back. “When you get on ’em good, it’s crazy how
many you can catch,” she said. This is how she gets on them: Huffmaster has a line she trolls that she’s identified on electronics and with previous success. It’s just outside a channel marker, where there’s a ton of submerged trees, stumps and other brush and debris to hold fish. She pulls jigs over deep water and up over humps and ledges that rise to as little as 5 feet. “You keep that trolling motor on low,” she said, “just enough where your line’s pulling, where you’re barely trolling.” Huffmaster said there’s no need to deploy huge spreads from a bank of rod holders. She fishes just one, maybe two rods at a time. Her favorites are a lightweight Mr. Crappie Slab Shaker combo and a Lew’s 6-foot Ultra Light with a Lazer Light Speed Spin 75 reel. She spools up with 8-to 10-pound braided main line and uses a 4- or 6-pound fluorocarbon leader tied to a 1/16-ounce Crappie Magnet Fin Spin or a Mr. Crappie jig head. Paddletail and curly tail bodies both have their place. Chartreuse/pearl and pumpkin are good colors. She trolls her jigs 10 to 15 feet behind the boat and keeps a loose drag so the hook doesn’t tear out of a crappie’s paper-thin mouth. “Call me old fashioned, but that’s how we do it,” she said. “And we don’t seem to have any problem catching a mess of them… and some big ones. Which Would You Change First? By Capt. Michael Okruhlik
C
hange is inevitable. In all aspects of life, change is necessary. This is especially true for anglers. When things are not going right, we immediately think of the next lure to throw. We all embark on our fishing journeys with a plan before hitting the water. We may base it on predicted conditions, time of year, experience, or possibly, but hopefully not, a social media post. Let’s discuss what I would do when plan-A doesn’t produce as envisioned. Imagine we are in the perfect looking spot, conditions are exactly as planned, active bait is visible in the area, the tide is flowing, but nothing is biting. Most of us would make a change, and I think we are all in agreement that our first correction would not be to move with everything looking right. Now, here is where I feel most people will make a mistake. Let’s say we are throwing soft-plastic paddletails. What is the first thing you would change?

I bet you said color. Am I right? During my decades of fishing the salty bays and marsh, I’ve found that color is the last thing I should change. If some bass fishermen are reading this article, I am solely basing this theory on saltwater for trout, redfish and flounder. It’s not your fault that you tend to change color first. Let’s face it, color is the first thing someone mentions when they describe the lure they used, and when we walk into the tackle aisle there are significantly more colors than lure choices or sizes. We are bombarded with so many colors. Color must be the key to catching, right? Well, maybe not, most of the time. I’ll use my lure brand for an example. I produce 34 unique colors, but I only produce three different sized paddletails. Having all these color options at our fingertips can be overwhelming, and hearing others focus on the color that landed
the big one has caused fishermen to focus on color first. I have found more success in changing the size of the lure over the color. The fish are typically not feeding on anything that resembles the color we are throwing, but they are feeding on a specific size that we have in our box. Matching the forage size is the better option. If that doesn’t produce a bite, then I will even switch the style of lure before the color in most situations. Ultra-clear water is an exception, and these conditions play by different rules. We can cover that in another article, but until then focus less on color and more on size and action. Wax on Boats is Old Tech
C
an you wax your 17’ to 20’ boat inside and out in 30 minutes or less? I can tell you first-hand that it is possible, but to do it you’ve got to forget about wax and get with the times. Gtechniq’s ceramic coatings are the technologically advanced way to get great results with less time and effort. I tested it on an 11-year-old Key West 1720, and this author will never go back to wax. Wax is old technology. Do you have a rotary phone? Do you use a pager? What about a flip phone? We have new technologies available. Once
you learn of a new spray-on coating that provides three months of shine and UV protection, would you still wax-on/wax-off? With a $20 bottle of Rinse-on Ceramic, you can get shiny results in 30 minutes! First you need to start with a very clean boat. Remove stains and buff out the dull surfaces, then follow with a good scrubbing with bleach in soapy water to remove all previous wax if any is still present. Hook up the spray nozzle in the Gtechniq Rinse-on Ceramic kit to the water hose and screw on a bottle of Rinse-on. The red knob adjusts material flow and it’s recommended to run it wide open. All you do is rinse the boat with water, and then turn on the material flow to apply the ceramic coating. You’ll see a slight sudsy effect letting you know material is being applied. Rinse boat inside and out with material flow open all the way. After the first application, you will want to wipe the boat down with microfiber towels. That’s it! Spray down the cleaned boat and wipe off in 30 minutes or less! Plus, there is an added benefit: you get a thin UV coating on all your hardware, lighting, switches, console gauges and expensive electronics. Wax is now a cuss word to this author. Application is quick and easy, but what about the results? Three months and 10 trips in saltwater later, and you can still feel the coating. What about a slippery deck? Nope. The stippled deck on the Key West is not slippery after application. It is ready for another application, yet the only part of the boat that doesn’t look new and shiny is the area under waterline. Beneath the waterline did stay clean for two months, but now it has slight yellowing. This 11-year-old vessel needs a light buff under the waterline. The coating is still there, and water beads/sheets off, but stains are caught in the tiny pores evidenced by the dull appearance. This stuff is pretty amazing, and this author will never waxon/wax-off again! GTECHNIQ.COM

he backcountry of the Florida Keys is renowned for its world-class fishing year-round, but there’s something magical about the month of December. As winter sets in across the northern parts of the United States, the Florida Keys become a warm and inviting sanctuary for anglers seeking a respite from the cold. The waters of Florida Bay are teeming with a wide variety of fish species year-round, making it a diverse and exciting destination for anglers. In the Flamingo area, you can expect to target species like snook, redfish, and seatrout. The flats of the Keys will have bonefish and permit, and out on the edge of the Gulf, schools of Spanish mackerel will be showing up. The calm waters of the Gulf of Mexico are particularly enticing for fly fishing, making this time of year a must-visit destination for those who love the art of casting flies or fishing light tackle. I like a 9 or 10wt floating line with a deceiver fly or a light action spinning rod with a live shrimp or pilchard as bait, be sure to bring along a few boxes of chum to keep them active. Fishing the backcountry of the Florida Keys in December is an exceptional experience for anglers seeking a winter escape and I have some open dates if you would like to get out on the water together, I just rigged out a new 25Ft Contender Bay Boat and looking forward to a great winter fishing season. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a novice, the Florida Keys backcountry has something to offer everyone. Get on my calendar and let’s go catch fish together. W
hile we have spent weeks in the Florida Keys with winds and seas too unsafe or even too uncomfortable to go out in, I have been researching some of the mariner’s superstitions that are still hanging around to this modern era. I’m sure some of you have heard one or two of these in the past, so I’m going to run down those that I truly believe in, (yes! I’m a superstitious mariner!) and some that I just find too interesting to not share. Firstly, one most of you probably have heard, no bananas on a fishing boat! This was brought about for many reasons. Mostly, the old ships carrying bananas had to move quickly to their destination or the bananas would go bad and were not sellable when they arrived. This speedy trip would not allow the time or conditions for the men aboard to fish, therefore, it was bad for catching that prized fish dinner while underway. The second-best reason for no bananas on board was the fact that the banana harvest would contain spiders and snakes in the large bunches. Many an old sailor met their end due to these critters on board and created another valid reason for the no banana superstition. There are more reasons that range from slipping on a banana peel to the banana itself

on the hands of the fisherman acting as fish repellent. So, as you visit one of our many fishing docks here in the Keys and wonder why there is a sign saying “No Bananas”, now you know why! The second most popular superstition, that I personally believe in, is not changing the name of a boat. This one came about because once upon a time, the mariners thought you were failing to advise the deities that rule the elements of the sea. Some basically thought that you would be trying to slip something past these deities and that you would be punished for your deviousness. There is a complicated ritual for renaming a boat without giving it this bad luck, but I personally would never do it! There are so many others that were once upon a time adhered to that I find funny, like no women aboard the boat as they would distract the crew. However, these same men believed that naked women calmed the sea, which is why the figurehead for so many old ships became the bare-chested female figure. Funny, huh? Redheads were thought to bring bad luck to a boat. Or passing the salt. Or even stirring of one’s tea was once thought to bring doom to a ship! There are so many more, including the all too famous Bermuda Triangle, which is right in our backyard, that there are too many to list! On those bad weather days when you can’t go fish, it’s excellent and enlightening reading. t’s December, the weather is finally cooling down, and the cold fronts and north winds are bringing awesome sport fishing opportunities to the Florida Keys. Species like sailfish, blackfin tuna, wahoo, king fish, and a variety of others can be found just offshore of the reef. The best way to target many of these Pelagic species is live bait fishing and one of the most effective ways of presenting a live bait is by kite fishing. Suspending live bait fish like goggle eyes, sardines, pilchards, and cigar minnows from clips hung on a line going to a kite has become one of the most effective ways to target sportfish here in the Keys, especially sailfish. This method of fishing does several things, including enabling you to cover a lot of area with your baits behind your boat, keeping almost all the line and leader out of the water where it’s impossible for a game fish to see it, and giving you control of your bait right on the surface where a predator is likely to notice it. If you’ve never done it before, it can seem overwhelming at first. But once you get dialed in to how everything works, it’s actually quite easy. If you’re on a fishing charter, it’s a great way for a customer to get involved. Once the kites are all set up and the baits are put out, the customer or fisherman can work the rod keeping the bait right in the perfect spot near the surface. This keeps everyone engaged and involved with the whole process. It’s a lot of fun, keeps everyone busy and helps teach you to pay attention to your bait. Now get ready and pay attention. Sometimes there is some waiting involved, but when it happens there are not many things more exciting than when a sailfish comes up chasing your bait. Watching that black shadow come up from underneath the bait, chase it around, grab it and start to swim away while you feed him and then going for it, coming tight, pulling the line out of the clip, and watching that fish start to jump and go crazy is one of the most exciting things you can do offshore in the Keys. Even after doing it for many years, it’s always a sight to behold. So, this is the time of year. pending my days on the turquoise water of the Atlantic in the Florida Keys is my favorite thing to do. The thrill of the chase, the anticipation of a swordfish strike, and the sheer strength of these majestic creatures make every day at sea an adventure. The seas don’t always play nice as we know. I didn’t get offshore as much as I would have liked to but, I am happy it is now stone crab season. It was a good way to spend the day when it was too rough to go catch swords. I have a deep respect for the sea, and safety is my main priority. I was delighted to load up on claws and stone crab is known for its succulent meat and it is definitely my favorite. If you are catching stone crab, please be sure to always measure the claws to ensure that the population can thrive for years to come. Being out on the water catching swordfish is still my passion. I released two this month and kept one for dinner. There were lots of sharks too. The dolphins are always beautiful. WINTER I FISHING By: Brendon Allen
nshore fishing during the winter months can be outstanding for fly anglers looking to sight-cast redfish, speckled trout, and even snook. The water turns crystal clear due to fewer storms and less runoff while the lower tides present perfect conditions for targeting tailing fish. These conditions make the fish far easier to spot, but you still need the right fly to persuade that fish to bite. Let’s review a few patterns and color selections that are likely to make this outcome more probable. Winter means cooler temperatures, and cooler temperatures mean that larger baitfish push into deeper waters, leaving inshore species to primarily feast on a diet of crustaceans and smaller baitfish. Fly patterns that mimic crabs and shrimp are go-to choices and can be purchased or tied in a variety of sizes and colors. Popular crab patterns include the Kung Fu Crab and Merkin crab, while popular shrimp patterns include the EP Spawning Shrimp and Borski Slider. The Kwan fly, which combines elements of both shrimp and crab features, is especially effective. As for baitfish patterns, the Seaducer, Deceiver, Clouser, and EP Minnow are excellent choices because of the variety of sizes and colors they can be tied and purchased in. As far as sizes and colors, natural colors and smaller sizes work best during the winter months. Water clarity, bright skies, and low tides can make fish skittish of anything that looks out of place, so it’s important that your fly doesn’t stick out too much. Baitfish patterns that consist of tans, grays, olive, and white are excellent choices. Primarily using tans, browns, and pinks work best for crustacean patterns. In addition to color selection, choosing an appropriately weighted fly is crucial. In shallower water you’ll want to use a fly with bead chain or small dumbbell eyes to avoid spooking any prospective catch, while in deeper water, medium to large dumbbell eyes will help your fly sink to where the fish are eating. Regardless of weight and color, including weed guards on your fly will ensure that fish will be the only thing you’re catching. Fly fishing in during the winter can be an exhilarating experience because of the bountiful sight-casting opportunities. With the right fly selection, the possibility of catching that fish you’ve set your eyes on is just a cast away.

s December blankets over Florida, it has long been a paradise for anglers seeking the thrill of catching the majestic swordfish. These elusive creatures, known for their formidable sword-like bills, present both a thrilling challenge and a delicious reward. However, as with any pursuit involving nature, it is essential to emphasize the importance of respecting the fish and practicing sustainable harvesting methods. Swordfish are pelagic predators that can grow to impressive sizes, sometimes exceeding 1,000 pounds. Their remarkable strength and speed make them one of the most sought-after game fish in the world. South Florida’s warm waters, particularly the Gulf Stream, offer prime conditions for swordfish to thrive. These waters draw anglers from far and wide, all eager to engage in the timeless battle of man or woman versus fish. Yet, as we enjoy the thrill of swordfishing, we must also recognize the significance of responsible harvesting. Catch limits, size restrictions, and time and area closures aim to ensure the sustainability of swordfish populations. Anglers must adhere to these regulations, as they are the guardians of our oceans. The “catch and release” culture is gaining momentum in the sportfishing community. If you catch a swordfish that falls outside of the legal limits or if you’ve reached your quota, safely revive and release the fish back into the ocean. If possible, participate in tagging programs which help researchers gather valuable data about the movements and behavior of these creatures, contributing to their conservation.

Imagine the excitement of doing a Christmas themed trip as an annual festive tradition with your family. Let’s shift our focus to the rewarding part of swordfishing – savoring the catch. Once you’ve had a successful day on the water, it’s time to bring your Christmas spirit into the kitchen. For a delightful holiday feast, try this swordfish recipe to inspire a new Christmas dinner tradition. Instructions: 1. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. 2. Rub the swordfish steaks with olive oil, minced garlic, chopped rosemary, and thyme. Season with salt and pepper. 3. Place the lemon slices on top of each swordfish steak.
Ingredients: • 4 swordfish steaks • 1 lemon, sliced • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1 teaspoon fresh rosemary, chopped • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped • 2 tablespoons olive oil •

ANHINGAS SWIM FOR THEIR SUPPER
W
ith common names like water turkey, snakebird, and even devil bird, the Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga) is a bird of folklore and mystery. Found year-round in Florida, the Anhinga’s native range includes coastal states from South Carolina to Texas as well as parts of Central and South America. They can live in salt or freshwater environments and are frequently seen in cypress swamps, mangrove-lined bays, and tidal streams—wherever they can find logs or open branches upon which to rest. Mostly black with a long tail, long neck, and long, pointed bill, the Anhinga is one of two Florida birds adapted to hunting fish underwater. Unlike wading birds that typically pluck small, unsuspecting fish from above the water column, an Anhinga slips into the water quietly and swims to pursue and spear its prey in the side using its sharp, serrated bill. They sometimes

consume their prey while underwater, but usually bring it to the surface where they toss it in the air before swallowing it headfirst. In Florida, the Anhinga’s favorite foods include sunfish, bass, killifish, mullet, and mojarra, but they also eat insects and crayfish or other crustaceans. Anhingas typically swim with their body The Anhinga’s tail, when submerged and only fanned, resembles the tail of their head and neck above the water, hence a turkey, hence its the nickname snakenickname water turkey. bird. They can remain submerged for up to a minute as they hunt and are able to dive to depths of 60 feet. This is possible because they lack the gland that ducks and other water birds have for buoyancy and waterproofing, therefore they must spread their wings to dry their feathers in the sun before their next flight. Anhinga feet are “totipalmate,” which means all four toes are joined with webbing. This puts them in the order Pelicaniformes, along with pelicans, boobies, gannets, tropicbirds, frigatebirds, and cormorants. Anhingas need clean water and healthy waterways to go after their fishy prey—just like anglers! Whenever you’re out on the water, you can protect Florida’s birdlife by retrieving and removing misguided tackle and line from trees and properly disposing of all trash. Together, we can advocate for wetlands restoration and other conservation projects across Florida to protect the places Anhingas need to survive and thrive.

CATCHING FROM A
s the weather in the Keys cools down, the water temps drop as well. Some of the tropical species are quite sensitive to water temps (they are, after all, cold-blooded, right?). Bonefish are probably the most persnickety, and the other famous flats species (permit, tarpon) will also thin out on the flats when the water gets into the lower 70s and below. But there are other opportunities available to the kayak angler in the cooler weather several snapper species, yellow jacks, cero mackerel and even the occasional legal grouper move into shallow water. I generally like to fish the bottom dwellers (snapper and grouper) with 4500 reels and 12-20lb rods with 4’ of 20lb or 30lb leader. Anchoring with sinker rigs and bait seem to work best for these fish. The best bait choice can vary amazingly from day to day and location to location, so it pays to have options. My preferences are live shrimp, cut ballyhoo, and butterflied mullet with just enough lead to hold it in the prevailing current. Chumming isn’t always necessary, but it’s nice to have the option if things are slow. However, you don’t have to deal with the standard 7lb, incredibly messy frozen chum

block. Simply dicing up some of your shrimp, mullet, ‘hoo, etc., and hanging it in a bag over the side of your yak can help to get the bite going. Bridge areas, channel bends and patch reefs can hold nice fish, but if a spot isn’t producing after 20 minutes or so, have a plan to move on to other spots. A few thoughts on anchoring for the bottom dwellers. A 5.5 lb grapple-style anchor with 40’ of line will handle most situations, but I carry another, separate 25’ line that I can add for deeper water or windier conditions. There are some good videos online discussing kayak anchoring, and I advise doing some research. The overarching thing to remember is don’t anchor in heavy current or wind. Experience will teach you how much is too much, but when in doubt, err on the side of caution and fish a calmer area. Mackerel respond well to quickly retrieved spoons, so I have one 15lb rig devoted to that in cooler weather. This same setup will get large barracuda and jacks as well. Since a spoon cast so far, it’s easy to cover a lot of water quickly. And the spoon trolls well behind the yak when you’re moving from spot to spot. One other species deserves mention, though their edibility can be debatable. BIG barracuda - up to 5’ long - come into the shallows during cooler weather. With a good presentation, they pursue your lure like a heat-seeking missile! Once hooked, they deliver blistering runs and greyhounding jumps before eventually landing boat side with an impressive maw full of razorblades. The standard tube lure available in the local tackle shops works quite well. (I prefer the green ones.) Let me know if I can help you with your pictorial pursuits!

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A FISHING GUIDE By: Capt. Joel Brandenburg
O
ne of the top questions I get ask is “Don’t you ever get tired of fishing?” My answer is always the same “Nope, I wake up every morning mad as heck at the fish.” Like a dog chasing tail, I never get tired of the chase and love every minute of it. When I was an executive in the corporate world and unhappy being an inside cat wearing a suit, I would dream of being a full-time fishing guide. The Fortune 500 company I worked for, for almost 20 years gave me a large expense account to entertain important clients and my management team. While other executives around the country spent their entertainment budget on golf outings, dinners, parties, etc., I spent every penny of my entertainment budget on fishing trips. Hiring the best guides in Florida to take my people and me fishing. To me fishing was not only the best way to get to know people since you are stuck on a boat with them for 8 or 10 hours, but it was also a chance for me to learn different skills and techniques for each and every guide. I would always ask the guides what it takes to be a full-time fishing guide. I’d normally get discouraging answers such as “the best way to make a small fortune guiding is to start out with a large fortune” or “get used to living in a trailer” or “you’d get tired quickly of doing it every day.” Grandpa Capt. John Scudder was a charter captain in Flamingo and the Florida Keys for over 40 years and ran the same boat for all those years called the Flamingo Belle. Yes, he lived in a trailer and had a simple life, yet I realized from a young age he seemed to be the happiest person in our family. From the time I was a kid, I dreamt of being a full-time guide like Grandpa John.
After being burned out in the corporate world and decreasing my pay and increasing my area of responsibility one day I decided to “play hooky” from work and go out fishing. After that day I never went back to the office and stayed out fishing and haven’t looked back since. Now I’ve been a full-time guide fishing professionally for over 20 years and have loved every minute of it. It hasn’t always been cherries and cream; I’ve had to overcome many obstacles to stay in business. I had to overcome red tide, toxic spills, oil spills, bad economy’s, record cold snaps, fish kills, hurricanes, sunk boats, engine failures, injuries to myself, sickness, Covid 19 world epidemic, fish closures/restrictions, family tragedy and many other obstacles. Like in any business you have to adapt and overcome your obstacles. When people ask me what it takes to be a full-time fishing guide, my answer is usually pretty long and complicated. For the purpose of this article, I’ll shorten and simplify my answer: Being a successful full time charter captain is like a four-legged stool. If one of the legs breaks the stool falls down. Each leg on the stool is as important as the others. All legs must be strong to keep the stool from breaking. Leg #1- You must deeply love to fish and be able to catch fish every day, no matter what obstacles face you. Leg #2- You must have good equipment rod n reels, tackle, boat, engine, safety equipment, etc. Doesn’t have to be great, just good. Leg #3- You must have a great outgoing patient personality and be able to entertain your clientele. Leg #4 - You must be able to market. In today’s environment you can’t build a business by just shaking hands and holding babies. You must be savvy on the internet and market your business in many different ways. I subscribe to SWOT. Being a full-time fishing guide is a very rewarding profession, but if you don’t have the four legged stool, choose another profession.

MARINE THEFT PREVENTION • Install motion sensor lights. Make sure areas around the boat are well lighted. • Install surveillance cameras and make sure they will capture the face of an intruder. Cameras are often installed too high and only capture the top of a suspects head or the brim of the hat he is wearing. • Install a GPS tracking device on your boat and/or engines. • Install a boat alarm. Alarms are very effective at preventing equipment and boat thefts. • Disconnect the batteries to disable the trim / tilt function. Keep the engine down, touching the ground so the lower unit can’t be removed. • If the boat is on a trailer, chain the rims together or boot one of the wheels to prevent the boat and trailer from being stolen. • Keep a trailer hitch lock on at all times. • Install bolt locks on the engine or put extra-long engine bolts on and bend the ends. • Destroy the threads on one bolt so the nut can’t be removed. • Keep valuable electronics in a secure location. It might be a hassle, but it will same you thousands of dollars in the long run. • Take pictures and record serial numbers if available. • Don’t leave fishing and diving equipment unattended outside. It only takes a thief a minute - literally - to take it. • If you are gone for an extended period, call your local Sheriff’s Office substation. Our deputies will keep an eye on your property while you are away.

Surf Expo Kicks Off 2024 With a Wide Selection of Brands and Full Event Lineup

urf Expo, the premier watersports and coastal lifestyle tradeshow, returns to the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando on Jan. 10-12, 2024, in the West Concourse with a broad selection of brands and a full event line up. Over 700 exhibiting companies are expected to participate in the January show, including over 60 new exhibiting brands. “Surf Expo continues to be the ‘go-to marketplace’ for buyers and brands to connect in person, discover new products and trends, and conduct business,” said Roy Turner, Emerald SVP and Surf Expo Show Director. “Our January show allows retailers to preview all the new styles and new introductions ranging from top surf brands, hardgoods, apparel, footwear, swimwear, boutique fashions and accessories, value-priced resort items, fishing and marine products, souvenirs, and coastal gifts.” The show has also expanded its footprint with watersports and coastal retailers with its new Shoreline offering. This new floor area compliments neighboring product categories on the show floor – Surf, Skate, Paddle and Bluewater — by targeting business associated with recreation found along rivers and lakes. Shoreline will feature products related to day camping, portable power, inflatables, overland, wakeboard, SUP, and performance related clothing and footwear. “From the trails to the lakes and beyond, Shoreline at Surf Expo supports the natural evolution of the waterman’s lifestyle with gear, apparel and accessories that will take them from coastal shoreline activities into camping, hiking, climbing and other recreational activities found along the rivers and lakes,” said Turner. ANGLERS GET TWO MONTHS FOR GULF AJ
I
t will be another short season for amberjack in the Gulf of Mexico next year. The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council decided in late October to modify both the recreational season and commercial trip limits for greater amberjack. The result for recreational anglers is a two-month fall season, which is expected to close a few days early based on projections. The council chose to modify the recreational season so it opens on Sept. 1 and remains open through Oct. 31, unless the annual catch target is projected to be met earlier. The projected date for reaching that annual catch target is Oct. 26. The council also chose to reduce the commercial trip limit to seven fish, which is equivalent to about 210 pounds gutted weight. This framework action will be transmitted to the Secretary of Commerce for approval and implementation as soon as practicable. In anticipation that this rule may not be implemented before the beginning of the 2024 commercial fishing season, the Council requested that NOAA Fisheries implement an emergency rule to reduce the commercial trip limit to seven fish at the start of the year. Since Amendment 54 reduced catch limits by about 83 percent, and the 2023 commercial annual catch limit was exceeded, a payback provision will reduce the 2024 commercial annual catch target to 56,661 pounds whole weight.
