he origins of Salt Life are pure. With two simple words in a scrawling font, the iconic brand began as a tattoo inked on the backs of a couple of surfing fishermen in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. Four hard-core watermen began grassroots promotion of the design in 2003, selling bumper stickers and T-shirts. During the humble early years, no one foresaw the eventual scope of the worldwide phenomenon they had launched. Salt Life has come to represent everything everyone loves about the ocean. At a glance, the now-familiar logo proudly displays a love of the saltwater lifestyle. Fisherman and diver Jeff Stillwell, who just happens to be president of Salt Life, said he is blessed to be part of the phenomenon. “Whatever attracts you to the water, Salt Life represents that,” he said. “If you happen to love to fish, it means fishing to you. I happen to be an avid diver. It means diving to me. If you’re a surfer, it means surfing. Stillwell said they’ve got a line of waterproof gear on the horizon, and he’s excited about the territory expansion of Salt Life Lager. Yep… Salt Life launched an easy-drinking beer to celebrate its 15th anniversary in 2018. “It goes hand-in-hand with our lifestyle,” Stillwell said. “We’re all out there on the water for a great fun-filled day in the sun, and at the end of the day our customer loves to kick back, as do I, with a nice cold beer.” But all the fun, and all the success, comes with responsibility. he 34th Annual Palm Beach International Boat Show is set to take place from Thursday, March 28 to Sunday, March 31 on the West Palm Beach waterfront along Flagler Drive. rom my perch atop a pile of boulders, I faced directly into a stiff northeast wind and its attendant waves. I stood with dubious footing as the swirling elements riled the air and water around me. There was seemingly no reason for me or anyone else to fish this particular spot at this particular time, but I had a hunch. Several yards seaward from where I balanced among the loose stones, the shallow bottom sloped to a depth of about 8 feet. The submerged valley was fed by a newly dropping tide. The wind and waves, working to oppose the falling water, stirred the seas over the basin into a strip of foaming turbulence. With tide pushing baitfish into the depression—and the churning water pinning them there—an ideal ambush situation was created for any nearby snook craving an easy meal. For weeks, the wind had blown steadily from the east and southeast. When a forceful northeast blow ensued, I anticipated predatory activity. Consecutive days featuring gusts of up to 25 mph compelled me to abandon my usual bridge fishing to capitalize on the shifting atmospheric conditions. Mindful of the wind’s ability to influence the location of baitfish schools, my instincts drew me to this boulder-capped point of land protruding from the river’s western bank. Few creatures in the diet of gamefish wear chartreuse or anything remotely similar to the flamboyant shade of green. Any critter dressed in such gaudy fashion would be doomed immediately to the stomach of a predator. So, when my chartreuse jig entered the tempestuous waters of the drop-off, it was snapped up instantly by a 26-inch snook. Not long after releasing the fish, underwater visibility proved to be of no significance on this occasion. When I switched to a less noticeable variety of lure, the snook continued their assault and hit almost everything I threw at them for the next four nights. Throughout the feed, I had the setting entirely to myself; the fish were in an aggressive mood all the while—a product of the same natural forces that guided me to their location with such timeliness. The most interesting part of the affair was that the feeding, in spite of its furor, existed for only a short period of the outgoing tide each night. The snook, most of which were in the high 20-inch range, abandoned their tactics when the wind shifted back to its more regular southeastern origin. As the tide progressed in its unremitting cycle, the frenzy of action concluded—to resume in another place on a different breath of wind and a different stage of the tide. S

alt air and saltwater can restore the body and the soul, sometimes literally. This is a story about a unique ocean voyage that has a berth waiting for you. Travis Suit’s inspiration for standup paddling from the Bahamas to Florida is his daughter Piper, who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when she was four. “CF” is a progressive genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time (www.pipersangels.org). When Travis learned that saltwater could be very beneficial in alleviating the symptoms of CF, he immersed Piper in saltwater activities and became inspired to create an oceanbased event that could raise awareness and funds to help CF patients everywhere. Thus was born the Crossing For A Cure. Travis made his first crossing from the Bahamas to Florida in 2013 with three stalwart friends who traversed 90 miles after paddling continuously for 15 hours. They came to be known as “Piper’s Angels.” Since then, their ranks have grown to include hundreds of inspired paddlers, dedicated volunteers and generous sponsors who work together to support and improve the lives of families in the cystic fibrosis community by raising awareness, offering life-expanding activities and providing urgent financial support through the Piper’s Angels Foundation. This year’s journey from Bimini to Florida is scheduled for June 15, and opportunities for you to become part of the Crossing abound. The event is open to standup or prone boards, surf skis, outrigger canoes and dories, with a potential of $88,000 in cash purses for the competitive categories. You can paddle as a competitor or a recreational relay member, or sponsor a paddler, a team or the Foundation in any amount. The Crossing crew is actively seeking support vessels and captains (offering lodging and fuel stipends), and looking for volunteers to assist at the Lake Worth Beach landing. O

f all the animals a diver might encounter, the octopus most easily qualifies as a creature from outer space. But, despite their eight arms, three hearts, nine brains and blue blood, octopuses really do have an earthly lineage. They are a mollusk (think oysters and conchs), but gave up their shells around 400 million years ago. In that time, nature has figured out some strange but effective ways for this animal to eat without being eaten. Dispensing with its shell gave the octopus flexibility and mobility. To take advantage of their mobility, the octopus features eight flexible, sucker-equipped arms. With these arms octopuses can pull themselves in any direction over the ocean bottom or swim through open water. For real emergencies, they can squirt a blast of water from their siphon for a jet-propelled take-off. Just about every part of an octopus except its beak and eyes can flow like Silly Putty. Consequently, an octopus can work its way through just about any opening it can get its beak through. That means an octopus has lots of places to hide.

Octopuses have turned hiding into an art form. Their skin contains millions of chromatophores—cells that contain red, orange, yellow, brown or black pigment. Each cell can be individually expanded or contracted to show or hide color and change the texture of their skin. This allows the octopus to match its surroundings in a fraction of a second as it moves. The most alien characteristic of octopuses is probably their eight arms. Each arm has double rows of suckers that not only grasp, but also taste. As an octopus hunts the ocean bottom, the arms independently probe cracks and crevices in search of prey. If it appears those arms have minds of their own, they do. While an octopus has about 500 million neurons, only about a third of them form the central brain. The remaining two-thirds are equally divided among the eight arms, putting them where they can most efficiently interact with those myriad muscles, sensors and chromatophores. So where does a diver go to encounter these amazing animals? My favorite local spot is the Blue Heron Bridge. Octopus studies at the site, led by local researcher Chelsea Bennett, have found common octopus, the Atlantic longarm octopus, Caribbean two-spot, Caribbean reef, pygmy and brownstriped octopuses there. Since octopuses are so good at hiding, Chelsea offered advice from her many hours of octopus observation. “The common and the longarm octopuses are generally found in high densities at the east and west end of BHB (typically just south of the bridges). I call these species underwater neighbors because they are both found in same areas but can coexist because they are associated with different substrates. The common octopus lives in hard-bottom areas (rock, rubble, shell) and the Atlantic longarm in sandy plains.” Pura Vida Divers is featuring Blue Heron Bridge Diver specialty courses throughout the month of March. I

love fishing in the backcountry of the Islamorada area & Everglades National Park this time of year. If the wind is up you will have a great opportunity to cast a crustacean at a bonefish or permit without spooking it, if you find light winds & the water has warmed up you just might be able to find the first tarpon of the season. Out back around the mangrove shorelines while looking for those silver kings to roll, cast a plastic lure and work it slow you might just catch a snook or redfish. It’s absolutely one of the best times of the year to fish the backcountry and flats in my opinion, but it’s all dependent on the weather conditions which can go from mild to wild so be sure to check the reports and be safe about things. If you head out into the Gulf of Mexico you will still find a few spanish mackeral along with a host of other species from cobia to kingfish and if you have a secret stash of GPS coordinates you should stop on one and drop something down to the bottom to see what you might hook into. When I have a full charter and the wind will cooperate this time of year I love to get out to the gulf and see what I can find, always take a well full of live baits (pilchards, pinfish, & shrimp) with you and make sure you have a few live crabs in case you run into a school of permit. I always have 2 Hogy pro tail soft baits (photo below) rigged to my 15lb spinning rods for the ride out, they make it simple to slow down and cast to a fish on the surface or if running by a marker we can stop for a quick cast without spending time rigging a live bait. When you get to your GPS number slow down long before you are on the numbers and slowly approach in case something is up on the surface, I see people race up to their fishing spot all the time and wonder what they are thinking, be sneaky about it & I bet you will have more success! Once anchored I like to drop a bag of chum over the side and if I have a well full of pilchards I always send out a few freebies to get the fish excited before putting one down on a hook. t’s my favorite time of year again, springtime. There is always a lot going on in March, the Mahi are moving down the edge, tons of sailfish around and the bottom fishing bite is turned on strong.

We’ll start to see Mahi this month moving south along the edge of the reef under the frigate birds in the 200-400 ft range. Kite fishing in the spring time is super productive, well see a large variety of fish taking live gogs, pilchards or thread herring . Sailfish, blackfin tuna, kingfish, Mahi and bonita are the usual suspects. Most of the live bait fishing takes place in 130-200 ft of water. Fishing the shallow water patches in hawks channel has been red hot! The wind has the water good and dusty and the cold fronts has the larger fish move in shallow. Plenty of keeper yellowtail, mangroves mutton and lane snapper have been making their way to the dinner table, along with porgy, cero mack’s and yellow jack. The deep wrecks are amber jack, big muttons, vermillion snapper and of course grouper. We only have a few more months before season opens back up for those guys. Yellow tail have been chewing on the edge of the reef in the 65-85 ft range. We see a lot of flag sized fish on the edge this time of year. All venues have provided excellent fishing this winter, even with a surprise appearance by mahi offshore. We expect more of the same for March as our wintertime visitors begin heading north. The sailfish are the exception. They will begin migrating to the west for their annual spawning run off Mexico. These fish are hungry and, as they move down the reef line, they’re constantly on the lookout for food. They tend not to be overly particular about what they eat, so your best strategy for success is to carry a wide variety of baits. Goggle eyes, pilchards, ballyhoo and cigar minnows all make fine sailfish baits. We tend to put a couple different baits out in our spread to see if the sails show a preference. If so, we switch all the baits to their favorite of the day. The key to finding sailfish this time of year is not so much the depth of the water as the color of the water. You want to fish a blue edge, whether it’s a powder blue-to-blue or a greento-blue. You want to be set up wherever that edge is and whatever color combo it may be. In the same area as the sails, there are also plenty of blackfin tuna in the 10- to 20-pound class plus king mackerel and a more common occurrence of dolphin. Moving inshore to the wrecks, March is typically very good for mutton snappers, king- Nice kingfish for the Doug fish and very large amberjacks. Richards group The amberjacks are beginning their spawn this month, and it’s now that we catch some of the biggest ones that we catch all year. Fish in the 60- to 80-pound class are not unusual, with plenty of 20- to 40-pounders to wear you out. The best baits to attract the attention of the AJs are bluerunners, grunts and large pilchards. Jigging also produces excellent results. For the muttons and kings, live pinfish, pilchards or ballyhoo all work, fished down near the bottom. On the reef, the yellowtail action picks up tempo at this point in the spring. With the SS The Gazett group had a great day of snapper fishing with Capt. Wayne Burri warming waters, the fish become more active and need to feed more, which makes it a bit easier to coerce them into taking your bait. Using plenty of chum is important. SnapperUp and SeaSquared Charters. or Mojo Oats will bring them in right behind your boat. All you need for successful yellowtail catching are 15-lb fluoro leaders and small hooks, such as the Owner #4 Mutu Light hooks we use. The reef edge will have good numbers of king and cero mackerel. And, of course, plenty of grouper that must be released as the season is closed until May 1. In Florida Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, there are loads of cobia, large king mackerel, Spanish mackerel and mangrove snappers. Pinfish is the go-to bait for all but the kings, which love small bluerunners fished either under a balloon or, preferably, hanging from a kite. We use #7 wire, as these kings are quite large and can bite through smaller wire. atching the news and seeing the New England states getting pounded by “noreasters” made me realize how great it is to be in the Florida Keys right now. Shoveling my vehicle out of multiple feet of snow just to go to work is just simply not a fun activity. Great time to put away the ice fishing gear and make a trip down to the Florida Keys! It has been a great month of fishing. With the 20+kt winds I spent a lot of time inshore. Weather did not slow down a great bite. Permit have begun to show up on the flats in good numbers. Shallow water on the edges of deep channels with fast moving current is always the best place to look. Permit are incredibly weary, so if possible I prefer to stake out and wait. Positioning yourself so the sun, wind, and current are at your back will provide the best opportunity for success. Small live crabs on a sharp 2/0 hook attached with 20lb fluorocarbon should do the trick. A large live shrimp on a small jig head works too. If you do not have a shallow water skiff but still want catch a permit, try drifting a crab 4 feet under a cork and drift down the channel. Don’t be surprised if a tarpon jumps on your hook. Even though we did not receive any snow in the Lower Keys, we have had some pretty fresh North winds, providing great sailfish action. Making drifts along the edges of the reef with live bait is the preferred method. On windy days, it’s very important to have large, hardy baits such as a bluerunner, goggle eye, or live mullet. Having an assortment of baits is always a good idea. Smaller baits don’t last very long while drifting, but are necessary to fit into the mouth of a small mahi, tuna, or whatever else may swim into your spread. Definitely keeping some wire leader close by is a good idea. You never know when a big kingfish or wahoo wants to swim by. March is looking up to be a great month of fishing. The problem is figuring out what major gamefish to target. The best bet is always to just play the weather. Spring is on its way, so a lot depends on whether you have winter or summertime conditions. My theory is if the winds blowing out of the south go north. If the winds blowing out of the north, go south. This way you are always fishing on the leeward side of the islands, avoiding large choppy swells. Both sides provide great, yet opposite styles of fishing. Being flexible is the key. Offshore begins to really heat up. Strong east winds will provide great color changes. Current rips along these color changes funnel schools of migrating fish. Following the birds will take you to the action. Strong east current with an east wind will provide “tailing” conditions for the sailfish. Sighting a school of fish and casting live bait in front of them should produce a bite. If trolling is your game, move just a little further out into the blue water and you should find decent size mahi mahi and nice wahoo moving through. Cobia always manage to find themselves in the mix. Inshore fishing is looking real good right now. Of course I’m talking about tarpon. The big ones are moving in and should begin to appear in good numbers. The most effective method of capturing a silver king this time of year is definitely night fishing. The bridges over major channels should begin to hold nice concentrations of fish. Being persistent drifting pinfish and live mullet works quite well. If edible fish is your fancy, there is no better time of year to catch large mangrove snapper in the shallow water. Most mangrove islands and creeks with deep edges will hold very nice fish. Placing a chum block out in a grassy channel with good current should produce nice fish. Ballyhoo will show up, and drifting large chunks of fresh “hoo” in the chum will entice nice fish. arch fishing the beginning of spring fishing is here already. I can’t wait spring and summer fishing is awesome. Offshore in March the big dolphin are tailing west under the frigates in 300 to 650 feet of water. In the shallows the cobia bonita and sailfish are cruising down the color change from 90 feet of water out to about 250 typically. On top of the reef the ballyhoo are ever present and the mutton snapper and grouper and yellowtail are just waiting to chow on them. It is a great time of year to carry live bait whether you are cobia fishing or sailfishing. The cobia love a pinfish or grunt on a large circle hook. Where the dolphin and sailfish are looking to eat a nice fat threadfin herring. Some days if you don’t have the bait you won’t catch. In the near shore waters the tarpon begin to fill in the deeper channels and harbors. Small pinfish is a great bait and the will eat fly and also artificials. The sharks will also be in the shallows in large numbers. A cut live bait like a snapper or a filet of bonita is always a good bait. The Gulf side the towers are full of fish and the shrimp boats are busy as well. The tunas setup on the shrimp boats just waiting for handouts. There are plenty of sharks there as well. The wreck in the Gulf are filled with snapper, sharks and cobia. When fishing the wrecks make sure you care enough chum to chum up the less than hungry fish and start the feeding frenzy. The flats are warming and flats guides celebrate the return of the tarpon in numbers. The permit and bonefish will hunt up on the flats especially on the warming weather days. Dive Computers Learning to dive was one of the great moments of my life. I had been snorkeling since I was old enough to talk but never had the opportunity to take the open water diver class. In high school they offered scuba diving as an add on to my science class, and I was so excited! I was finally able to breath underwater. I could stay at the bottom until I ran out of time on my dive tables. It took me awhile to “run the tables” and figure out how long I could stay at each depth but I was very careful to do it every time. I managed to do a hundred dives before I tried my first dive computer. This small device will track your depth and time underwater do some math and calculate how long you have before you must go back to the surface. It was a huge advancement for my diving career. A dive computer will calculate your bottom time more accurately and when properly used can help to make your dive safer. The newest dive computers can track your depth at least once per second. This allows them to calculate a multi-level dive profile that is constantly changing with your exact dive. I typically get a few more minutes under water with a dive computer than by hand calculating dive tables due to the multi-level profile it produces. Some models will have a pressure transmitter attached to the tank to give you air pressure right on the screen. It can track your consumption rate of air and give a better estimate of your remaining air time. This feature is awesome because it is presented in a format that is easy to understand while underwater. When the tank starts to get low the computer can give you an audible beep to remind you it’s time to end your dive. Perfect for when you’re a little distracted following a big fish. My absolute favorite feature of a dive computer is the ascent rate indicator. This is usually a bar on the screen that gives you your ascent rate. Making a slow safe ascent is one of the biggest factors in staying safe while diving. If a diver is going up to fast the computer will try to alert you to “Slow Down” keeping them safer. Technology is ever evolving and dive computer prices keep going down. They are small and easy to take with you and should be an essential part of any scuba divers gear. CONSTANT YELLOWFIN, DORADO AND

T

he action in northwest Costa Rica is outstanding. All five boats of our boats were on the water in January, with 83 trips logged for the month. Yellowfin tuna and dorado are a constant this time of year, but the team also fought a bunch of massive marlin. We released nine blue marlin, 11 striped marlin, three black marlin and 78 sailfish. We also melted a lot of ice with 256 dorado and 158 yellowfin tuna. The 32-foot Harvester was deep in the battle on Jan. 14, as client Kevin Poindexter battled a sweet blue marlin. The marlin was the headliner, but it was supported by an excellent sailfish release. They rounded out the day with a dorado and a yellowfin. Good thing, because it’s easy to work up a big appetite when catching all day long! The Adventurer is a 23-foot panga with the fishing tool of a boat twice her size and a bad attitude to match. This year we have added a Photo by Andy Blackledge bottom machine, tuna tube and outriggers.

Jeff Capen made history on Jan. 15 with the second-ever marlin release on the panga. A blue marlin release is a magnificent achievement on any boat, let alone the sneaky 23-foot switchblade. It’s proof you don’t need a big boat to catch big fish in Costa Rica! FishingNosara hall-of-famer and northeast FishingNosara representative Mark Cooney pulled off an amazing fishing feat with Capt. David on Jan. 18. What, you’ve never released a sailfish on a 23-foot panga with a tiller-steered motor? Legendary Texas angler Jerome McKown added to his record on Jan. 27 with a gaggle of sailfish releases with Capt. Carlos of the 32-foot Discoverer. Great work by Mate Kevin to safely wrangle and release these monsters. Of course these boys weren’t going hungry, thanks to a half-dozen excellent dorado scores. The flagship Wanderer is celebrating her 10th year of fishing in these waters, and one must marvel at the man who has commanded her from Day 1. It is no exaggeration that Capt. William and the Wanderer ran more trips last year than any boat in all of Central America. FishingNosara hall-of-famers Catherine Chase and Ron LaGro added to their legend on Jan. 19 with Capt. William. A striped marlin led off a great day of action. After Catherine’s release, Ron added a sailfish release. They rounded out the morning with a nice stack of dorado filets. ere are some of my favorite fish to eat in the lagoon along with some tips on how to catch them. It’s ok to eat fish from the lagoon, but do it in moderation. 1) Pompano: This silver-blue slab has some of the best white meat. It’s a cold-water fish and is usually caught between December and April on a variety of lures and live bait. Fish small jigs and pompano jigs around shallow drop-offs in 3 to 5 feet of water. Also look for them around bridges and deeper cuts. For live bait, use shrimp or sand fleas. 2) Snook: You can only keep one snook between 28 and 32 inches and only in certain months of the year. Closed season for snook is Dec. 15-Jan. 31 and June 1-Aug. 31. Snook have excellent flaky white meat. Snook can be caught on a variety of lures including topwaters, jigs and live bait. They prefer structure (piers, bridges, mangroves) and feed more actively at night. 3) Flounder: Often overlooked or targeted as table-fare, this species of fish has two eyes on one side of its heads and lies on the bottom waiting for bait to come by. I’ve caught flounder in the lagoon up to 5 pounds and sometimes three or four on an outing. Flounder love jigs and live bait, especially shrimp (live or dead). Fish for them on flats around bridges and on shallow flats in 3 to 4 feet of water. 4) Black drum and red drum (redfish): Black drum love any sort of crustacean, from shrimp to blue crabs and can also be caught on cut bait (ladyfish). Fish for them with bait around bridge pilings or under piers. Redfish will eat bait, and they’ll also take lures. Try a 4-inch jig with a paddle tail or a jig tipped with shrimp. 5) Snapper: I’ve fished for mangrove snapper (10” min) and lane snapper (8” min), and they can be caught easily on small jigs, jigs tipped with shrimp and shrimp. Fish around piers and structure and deeper areas on the flats. 6) Sheepshead and tripletail: Sheepshead are members of porgy family and eat crustaceans and barnacles. Shrimp, fiddler crabs and crabs are favorite baits. Fish for them on the bottom around piers and bridges. Tripletail will hit jigs, but fishing shrimp around buoys and floating markers is your best bet. 7) Mackerel and bluefish. Both species are fast and will hit any lure or live bait. I prefer mackerel to bluefish. They are cold-water fish and move into the lagoon during the winter months. They can be caught around structure, especially bridges with moving water. IS THERE A DISTURBANCE IN THE FORCE?

ranks of the invasive lionfish? Lionfish throughout the affected regions of the Western Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and some Caribbean island locations have all documented nasty-looking lesions or ulcers on their flesh. Currently, only a relatively small percentage of their populations are showing these signs. We have been following this event (lionfish showing skin lesions) for nearly two years now. Several researchers have been studying samples of ulcerated fish from many different locations. A relatively small percentage of lionfish are affected across the invaded areas. The northern Gulf of Mexico seemed to be a bit of a hot-spot about a year ago, but reports of skin lesions have been waning lately. It is suspected that some lionfish did not survive the “infection,” while others appeared to have survived with healed scars and seem to be doing well. These lesions are very similar in appearance to several other common fish-related skin diseases, but scientists have not been able to pin it down exactly. ishing has long been a tradition passed down through generations. From great-grandparents who manufactured tools and tackle out of the most basic materials all the way down to my generation’s tech-savvy methods of fishing, we all share something in common. The tug on the end of the line, the organized chaos and landing the fish are all part of the thrill that fishing entails. how much of an impact conservation makes on the livelihood of the sport. When I was young, learning to let a fish go to swim another day was difficult, especially after spending so much time trying to catch it. It wasn’t until later when I understood the importance of catch and release and how it impacts the future of an ecosystem. Conservation has been a popular topic in recent times, with the Florida sugar companies being in the spotlight. Everyone has seen pictures of the widespread fish kills that devastated Florida’s Gulf Coast. With so many people dependent upon that fishery, catch and release along with other methods of conservation are a necessity for restoring this fishing landmark. Most seasoned fisherman agree that success isn’t completely dependent on how many fish one catches or how big they are. Success lies in the challenges that accompanied the fish and how the angler overcame them. The tremendous stories that arise from these outings are a true testament to the will and perseverance it takes. The ultimate display of appreciation comes in the form of releasing the fish back into its habitat. While I love fish tacos as much as the next person, I find it more fulfilling to watch a fish swim away, hopefully to be caught by someone else one day. The technology nowadays enables us to easily capture parts of the adventure. Looking through my camera roll, I not only see pictures of the fish I’ve caught, but also hundreds of stories of how I caught them. Envisioning a future that includes fishing comes with the responsibility of speaking up for the speechless: our waterways and its tenants. Educating people about the value of catch and release makes it possible for there to be a future in fishing. Your short-term sacrifices now will one day light up the face of a young angler yet to know what their new favorite hobby has in store. I

f you’re an angler who enjoys following up a day on mountain trout streams with a refreshing craft beverage or two, cast your attention to the Blue Ridge mountain town of Hendersonville. This North Carolina town, about 22 miles south of Asheville, offers miles of stocked trout waters, as well as the popular Hendersonville Cheers! Trail. The two resources make it possible to spend the day catching three types of trout – rainbow, brown and brook – while spending an evening exploring three types of craft beverages – beer, wine and hard cider. First, the fishing part. North Mills River is the prime trout stream in the Hendersonville area. The river’s 4-mile section of delayed harvest waters receives an annual infusion of 11,000 trout from N.C. Wildlife, divvied between brook, rainbow and brown. Spring is a great time to fly fish the delayed harvest waters of North Mills River because no trout have been harvested since Sept. 30. Another hot spot for trout fishing is just across the Henderson County line toward Brevard. The Davidson River offers miles of public trout waters that receive annual stockings of 16,500 fish. Other lesser-known spots for fishing near Hendersonville include

three streams on the eastern side of Henderson County, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown. Rocky Broad River has a 1.2-mile stretch of hatchery support waters from Rocky River Lane to the Rutherford County line near Chimney Rock, while Cane Creek, near the Fletcher community, has 1.5-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters. For those who really want a unique experience, Little River in DuPont State Recreational Forest provides not only a scenic setting for trout fishing, but also a unique one. Delayed harvest waters flow through undisturbed mountains and over several notable waterfalls. Those waterfalls were immortalized on Hollywood’s silver screen in The Last of the Mohicans, as well as the backdrop for the exploits of Katniss Everdeen in the original Hunger Games movie. When the fishing is done, the Cheers! Trail awaits. The trail is one of North Carolina’s best, featuring 16 craft producers offering a variety of experiences. Beer fans love Sierra Nevada’s tasting room, which is one of the largest on the East Coast and features an expansive patio and outdoor amphitheater, while Bold Rock Hard Cider has emerged as a national leader in the hard cider industry and regularly hosts live music (indoors and outdoors), along with cidery tours and a food truck. Several craft producers on the trail create small-batch beverages prized for their quality and originality. Three breweries – Southern Appalachian, Triskelion and Guidon – are within a few blocks of each other in the Depot District, while Sanctuary Brewing Co. is only a few blocks away on Main Street. Sanctuary is pet-friendly with a commitment to pet rescue. Three wineries produce high-quality wines from European varietals. The newest – Point Lookout Vineyards – is located atop a 3,000-foot mountain with panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. s past president and current board member of IUSA (the organization that ratifies world records for spearfishing), I get to share the excitement of big fish applications. The entire IUSA board was amazed by a recent submission. We received word that Luis Viyella had speared a 480-pound yellowfin off the Dominican Republic on Dec. 23, 2018. If approved, this fish would not only be the new spearfishing world record, but it would also beat the current IGFA All-Tackle rod-and-reel record! The All-Tackle stands at 427 pounds, held by angler Guy Yocom and caught off Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Viyella supplied the required photos of the fish, the measurements, the weighing, and the certified scale. He provided witnesses and documented the “Story of the Hunt” which was well-written and riveting. Viyella was new to freediving and bluewater hunting but accompanied by an experienced friend. They were targeting wahoo that day when the tunas showed up. He was excited when his buddy speared a 125-pound yellowfin. As requested, Viyella added a second shot to the fish—a common practice to secure the fish and make the extraction quicker and easier. A bigger tuna showed up, but Viyella’s speargun was already discharged and embedded in the 125-pound tuna, so he called out for his new Daryl Wong speargun from the boat. It wasn’t a bluewater gun, and it wasn’t the ideal set up, but he needed to act quickly. Viyella attached a line and float to the reel gun, dove down, and fired a well-placed shot into the tuna. After attaching additional floats, he made headway in raising the tuna toward the surface. His buddy dove down and placed a second shot to the head, helped manage the lines, and kept sharks at bay until it was landed—all the things a good buddy does.

News of this magnificent fish traveled fast. Viyella was told that, if approved, his fish would eclipse the current spearfishing record of 353 pounds. During the application process, he learned the rules the hard way. In order to qualify, one must shoot and land the fish without assistance from others. It was heartbreaking for Viyella and the board, but his catch is still outstanding, and IUSA awarded a meritorious award. Viyella accepted it with grace and gratitude. He said, “Inside the boat, we realized it was a very extraordinary, giant yellowfin tuna. I cannot describe our feelings of gratitude to God, our emotions, joy, sense of achievement, cheers, hugs, screams of happiness. It had been the most amazing day at sea, and the most exciting catch ever, and I had caught, on rod and reel, a 900-pound blue marlin and 600+ pound swordfish before. This bluewater apnea spearfishing catch was a higher dimension, another level of joy and sense of achievement. Glory goes to God for His love and generosity.” Amen to that, Mr. Viyella! May you continue to be blessed with that same sense of wonder and joy, for that is the real treasure of the sea. Anglers Seek To Cement Legacies At 2019 Bassmaster Classic

T

he 2019 Bassmaster Classic, scheduled for March 15-17 on the Tennessee River, will feature the usual mix of established pro fishing superstars and hungry young pros who are destined to be the stars of tomorrow. The 52 anglers converging on Knoxville will be gunning for the largest share of the $1 million prize fund, and they’ll be aiming to establish their angling legacy by winning the most important title in professional fishing. Among the field are eight former Classic winners, including four-time champion Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., and defending champion Jordan Lee of Grant, Ala., who last year became one of only three anglers to claim back-to-back wins in the event. Seven of the pros have hoisted the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of

the Year trophy, including 2018 AOY winner Justin Lucas of Guntersville, Ala., and Aaron Martens of Leeds, Ala., who has claimed the award three times. “The Classic is a showcase for some of the most accomplished bass anglers in the world,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “You’ll have veteran pros out there who’ve experienced the huge stage that is the Classic and excelled in that environment in the past. But you’ll also have some young guys who are just chomping at the bit to make a name for themselves. “That’s one of the most exciting things about the Classic—it literally will change someone’s life forever.” Anglers hungry for first-time Classic glory include Florida’s Drew Benton, Tennessee’s Brandon Lester and Arizona’s Clifford Pirch — just to name a few. Whoever wins the event, the immediate effects will be easy to see. There’s the world-famous Classic trophy, which weighs more than 40 pounds and is easily the most coveted piece of hardware in professional fishing. Then there’s the $300,000 first-place check and the chance to stand before an arena full of screaming fans as confetti cannons set the stage for the accomplishment of a lifetime. This year’s weigh-ins will be held in Thompson-Boling Arena on the campus of the University of Tennessee. As always, the Classic will be held in conjunction with the fan-favorite Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods. Known as the most important consumer show in the bass fishing world, the Classic Expo will be held in the Knoxville Convention Center and the adjacent World’s Fair Exhibition Hall. Companies from across the fishing industry use the Expo annually to debut new products, and fans will be able to purchase many lures, rods, reels and accessories for the first time anywhere. Blue Wild Ocean Adventure Expo

T

he Blue Wild Ocean Adventure Expo is south Florida’s premier watersports expo. Baja’s Inshore Action

J

ust looking at a map will tell you the Sea of Cortez is a fish trap. Separated from the Pacific Ocean by Mexico’s nearly 800-mile long Baja California Peninsula, it’s a 62,000 square mile canyon that drops to depths approaching 10,000 feet. The sportfishing out of Cabo San Lucas, on the Peninsula’s southern tip is legendary. It is a bustling destination where marlin, sailfish and tuna abound. But Capt. Jimmy Nelson, host of the TV show Livin’ The Dream, pointed to a quieter destination and some awesome fishing up the Peninsula’s East Cape. Out of the Buena Vista Beach Resort about an hour’s drive north of Cabo, the Sea of Cortez drops to 1,000-foot depths just a few hundred yards off sand beaches. There’s a fleet of sportfishing boats waiting to take anglers offshore to chase all the big pelagics, and the inshore action borders on unbelievable. Even shorebased fishermen can catch some species typically associated with long runs offshore. At a place renowned for billfish, Nelson said the inshore action is as much of a reason to go as the marlin. “You never know what you’re going to get. There’s all kinds of things that will be right there on the edge,” Nelson said. “Roosterfish, African pompano, cubera snapper, Sierra mackerel, even dolphin, wahoo and yellowfin tuna will hit your popper right off the beach.” Never knowing what’s on the end of the line requires anglers to gear up. This is not the same as inshore fishing in the Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic. Nelson said casting 8-inch poppers or live lookdowns from shore is a ton of fun and requires 8000 size spinning reels. A big cubera snapper slamming your popper is a fight you’ll never forget. “It’s a rush,” he said. “You’re catching a bottomfish on top, so they go straight down to the bottom. You have to gear up with some pretty heavy tackle.” Trolling just off the beach is another tactic that puts anglers on a surprising array of the Pacific’s best sportfish. Big roosterfish might be primary target, but again, you never know what will eat when you’re pulling lookdowns and goggle eyes. Big yellowfin tuna have been known to surprise anglers just off the beaches, so 30 wide reels and heavy tackle are required. COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM
