How does AAM audited circulation benefit me? Q&A
Magazine audiences in the study were bolstered by inclusion of secondary audiences -- the passalong readership that occurs everywhere from doctors’ offices to friends’ homes.
FFranchise Owner: I don’t see how all this effort to participate in an audited circulation benefits me or my franchise. CAM Corporate Staff: The AAM audit report breaks down each franchise location’s individual circulation as well as the combined circulation (see p. 2 of audit report). It is vital that free publications are prepared to answer the tough question from some skeptical advertisers who say, “How do I know that you’re not throwing them into a dumpster?” FO: I would never do that! CS: I know that, you know that and everyone in the Coastal Angler/The Angler Magazine system knows that, but how do you confidently show someone outside of our group that there is proof that not only do you absolutely distribute 10,000 magazines each month but that over 95% of those magazines get into someone’s hands. FO: I rarely have anyone question my distribution integrity. CS: That doesn’t mean that advertisers aren’t thinking it. Imagine how much more effective your outreach could be if you could confidently and proudly show your audited figures. The cost of a 3rd party AAM circulation audit is prohibitive for the majority of both local and regional publications. Your AAM audit is free through your franchise partnership (it’s funded by your Franchisor). Do you think it might advantage you with your local advertisers who are deciding who in your market they should advertise with? How about using the audit as an opportunity to pitch potential regional and national advertisers in your market who are advertising with subscription-based competitors? If you are approaching national advertisers in your market, it’s an absolute vital tool. FO: That makes sense. CS: Were you aware that you can now access the audit reports for many of our competitors? For instance, we sometimes compete with The Mariner. Would you be surprised to learn that their circulation is only 3,838 copies per month? Verified. Or how about the audited circulation for Florida Sportsman is only 77,144? FO: I never thought about that. It would help separate me from my local competition and put me on a level playing field with the other subscriptionbased state-wide and national publications. CS: Right! FO: O.k. It’s worth the hassle of turning in my distribution report every month. I get it. Can I please get back to my distribution. Gosh, who’s got this kind of spare time?

• 35% of digital ads served receive no views at all. • Our readers spend an average of 3.5 seconds with your ad in our magazine. • Only 9% of digital ads are viewed for more than 1 second, and only 4% are viewed for more than 2 seconds. A huge Billboard display ad at the top of a site will only get 1.25 seconds of the users time.
M
agazines deliver by far the best return on ad spending when compared to TV, digital display and video, mobile and cross-media campaigns, according to a study presented by Nielsen Catalina Solutions at the Advertising Research Foundation Audience Measurement Conference in New York. The medium delivering the lowest return in the study is digital video, arguably the best for CPG marketers and for much of the marketing world. What medium delivers the biggest bang for the buck? A new study provides a definitive answer, and it’s probably not the one anyone expected. RETURN ON AD SPENT The study appears to be unprecedented in scope in terms of looking at norms for return on ad spending (ROAS) across multiple media. The conclusions are drawn from analysis of 1,400 research projects spanning more than a decade across 450 brands. Magazines- delivered ROAS of $3.94 per dollar of media spent. Digital Video-delivered only $1.53. Other media explored in the study -- TV, digital display, mobile and cross-media campaigns -- were in the middle, clustered around $2.50 per dollar of media spending. Nielsen Catalina Chief Research Officer Leslie Wood was quick to point out that the differences between magazines and digital video were all about pricing. Magazines had the lowest cost per thousand impressions (CPM) in the study, and digital video the highest.
