O
ne of the best places to consistently find fish in the Indian River Lagoon and St. Lucie River is the bridges. Bridges are ideal places for concentrations of fish and usually have the largest snook and tarpon hanging around. The water is deeper, there are ambush points around the bridge abutments, water is funneled through small areas, and baitfish are concentrated there. You need to have current and know the tides. As long as the water’s moving, the action will be better. You need to know the water depth and structures and fish the shadow lines. Bridges are also some of the top night fishing spots, and shadow lines result from the lights over the bridge. Fishing under bridges is easy because you can fish from the shore, wade or fish from a boat. Every way works. There are different techniques for bridge fishing. I use different lures, the main ones are topwaters, Yo-Zuri crankbaits, CAL jigs with a 4” paddletail, and TerrorEyz. With the CAL jigs and TerrorEyz, you want to cast to the abut-
ments and let the jig fall near the bottom and jerk it up. I like the 4” Yo-Zuri minnow crankbaits, which you crank down and then use as a jerkbait. I use 6- to 8-lb. white braid with a 2-foot, clear, 20-lb. leader. If you’re fishing for big fish, you might want to bump it up to 20-lb. braid with 40-lb. leader. A great technique for giant snook is using heavy 1- to 2-oz. Redtail Hawk jigs at night. Fishing at night is awesome, and it’s cool in the summer. St. Lucie River Bridges The three top St. Lucie River bridges are Roosevelt Bridge, Palm City Bridge, Evans Crary Bridge (Sewall’s Point Bridge or Ten Cent Bridge). The Roosevelt Bridge is known for giant snook and the monsters of the deep—Goliath grouper. Fish the south end of the bridge, which gets very shallow around the concrete abutments the farther south you go. The seawall around the marina is also good, and the seawall that stretches under the railroad bridge is excellent. I’ve caught many snook in that area using topwater lures. Both the Palm City Bridge and the Ten-Cent Bridge can be excellent. I like the south side of the Ten-Cent around the large abutments. That’s one of local legend Jim Harter’s favorite spots. Stuart Bridges The north bridge (Jensen Bridge) is awesome and can be waded around as well as fished under from the shore or from a boat. I like fishing under the east section on the north side. Recently, I caught 10 jacks, three mangrove snapper, a mackerel and a snook there in about an hour around 10 a.m. using a 4” Yo-Zuki minnow. The south Stuart bridge is my favorite. I like wading the sandy shallow area on the north side and fishing under the east span. Recently I caught eight snook there on an evening-night trip. Richard is staff writer for the Stuart Rod and Reel Club. For information on the club, call 336-414-3440.

I By Terry Gibson
n the November edition of Coastal Angler Magazine, I highlighted the stories of boaters who have been victimized by a handful of maritime salvage and towing companies. While it’s been my experience that most of these kinds of companies operate with a high level of professional integrity, some of them resort to predatory practices to rake in substantial fees for so-called “salvage claims.” In one boater’s story, the salvage claim bill was more than $30,000 for minor assistance that took less than five minutes. And this was no fly-by-night operator making this outlandish charge, it was a popular national company. Now two Florida lawmakers from the Tampa Bay area have taken a strong interest in this issue, and they recently filed legislation (Senate Bill 664 and House Bill 469) that would require all maritime salvage and towing companies to provide a written estimate to boaters. This is clearly a common-sense idea that should sail through the Florida Legislature. After all, when you bring your car to a mechanic, Florida law requires that you receive an estimate about what it will cost. It’s hard to argue that boaters on the water shouldn’t have those same consumer protections. The legislators who are being such good friends to boaters are State Senator Dana Young and State Representative Shawn Harrison. Their legislation would require that whenever the cost of a service could exceed $500, the salvor must provide a written estimate that discloses the cost to the boater. Boaters love the freedom of the open water, and it’s important that everyone understand that the legislation does not implement some new over-aggressive government regulation. The proposal does not in any way regulate what these companies may charge or force them to provide services they don’t want to. Thanks to a very simple half-page form, it will make sure boaters can have the costs disclosed up front, so they can make an informed decision. We’ve all heard the joke that “a boat is a hole in the water into which you pour money.” The truth is, boaters love the water and have made a thoughtful, informed choice to devote some of their resources to this joyous pursuit. They shouldn’t be victimized by those who would take even more of their money for no good reason. The proposed legislation will put an end to some unwelcome practices, and boaters throughout Florida should do what they can to see that this proposal becomes law.

ello winter breeze, fishing in the Winter months is my favorite time of the year to fish Mosquito Lagoon. The water levels are finally dropping, the water clarity has improved tremendously and will continue with the cooler weather coming in. As cold fronts start to become more frequent Red fish will start to form into bigger schools, as well as Big Trout, and schools of Black Drum are already coming through. With the right timing you can have very successful day in the lagoon pulling plenty of fish to the boat! As the water temps drop you will start to find Snook stacked up, as you all know I am a kayak angler and just paddling down the canals and up to dock lights, I have been finding schools of Snook of all sizes schooled up together. The evening and early morning hours you will find working an artificial or free lining a jumbo shrimp to be most effective. My go to lure for Snook is a DOA paddle-tail jig and you know Snook can’t resist those top waters, as to us anglers watching a Snook blow up on a top water! A Badonkadonk or Bomber is my go to, watching your Snook smash one of these will certainly leave you feeling fulfilled! The Redfish bite has been good! You will start to see the bigger girls coming in the Lagoon and finding them laid up in sandy spots. As of mid-November, I really haven’t spotted any schools of Redfish yet, they were still scattered around the flats and gravitating toward shorelines and mangroves in Mosquito Lagoon. As the cold fronts start to come in more frequent Redfish will start to form into bigger schools. I find freelining mullet has been their preferred bait of choose, but those who know

me know I never hit the water without being fully prepared and always have live and artificial on my kayak. Soft plastic jerk baits and spoons are great producers for lure action. The Trout bite is really picking up! Th cooler water has the big girls coming through, laying up in the sand spots for most of the days. They are gearing up for the cooler water and bait is plentiful and they are suckers for freelined mullet and pig fish. In between fronts big Trout can be very active if the water stays cooler, be prepared for great action! The water levels are dropping and the clarity in Mosquito Lagoon has improved which is great for sight casting. But this time of the year between the Fall weather and the cool fronts coming in the wind is picking up which makes it harder to use those artificial baits, you will find it easier to hook up on live bait! I will take the challenge and battle the wind with artificial, I enjoy the art of angling and find it much more fulfilling landing my fish on artificial baits. Mullet, Jumbo Shrimp, soft plastics, top waters, twitch baits, in these cooler months you will have no trouble hooking up in the Lagoon and find you will have great success. Go out there enjoy the cool breeze and give it all you got. Happy Holidays and Merry Fishmas! lthough last months snapper season wasn’t ideal with only two or three out of the six days being fishable, most that went were able to get their limit. However, there are talks of an additional weekend opening because of the foul weather we had for the second weekend in November, which will hopefully work out. FWC will announce any openings on then myfwc.com website so please keep checking in every few days to stay updated. Along with the snappers has been a fair amount of triggerfish, sea bass, redeyes, lanes, etc. caught on the bottom. Although amberjacks are closed, groupers are not, and they have both been biting good on a long leader with live bait. The groupers are beginning to move inshore to spawn so the 80-120ft bottom should be holding them pretty good through the end of the season. As far as trolling, when the weather permits, there are some fish being caught. The wahoo bite is starting to pick up whether you’re high speed fishing or slow trolling. We are starting to hear about the ten to fifteen bite days from the high-speed guys and guys slow trolling for sailfish, mahi, and blackfin are also getting four or five bites a day average. The sailfish, mahi, and blackfin bite has started to slowly pick up as well, seeing four to six sails a day average to go along with some bailers, an occasional gaffer, and some nice blackfin has been common. Slow trolling four to six, small (dink) ballyhoo on circle hook rigs along with two or even four teasers (generally two squid chains and two dredges) is a good spread. High speeders usually pull two to six lines most commonly, yo zuri bonitas on the flats and cowbells, black barts, weighted ilanders, etc. on the longs. The size of weight to use will depend on the lure, your speed, and ocean conditions.
First sailfish on the Bonna Vear for Bosco! Most will use a 20–60 ft shock leader 200-400lb test and anywhere from a 24-72 oz trolling lead. With both slow trolling and high speed fishing, look for structure, changes in water temp, changes in water color, current edges, bait, etc. Work those areas several times, as only one pass may not get the bite. We hope that the weather allows everybody to get out some this month and catch some fish! Good luck and Happy Holidays!

Edgewater & Backcountry
Larry caught 5.5 lb. Edgewater Backcountry Sheepshead with Capt Michael Savedow
T
he last several years have seen some chilly starts and some warm starts to the winter season, if it stays warm, fall patterns will continue with water temps in the 60’s, if the cold comes, water will drop into the 50’s and become clear, lagoon redfish and seatrout will school together, sheepshead will appear crunching barnacles on dock and bridge pilings, mangrove roots, and at the rocks, bluefish schools prowling the inlet, beaches, and backwaters, black drum will school on flats in the south lagoon, holes at Haulover Canal, Ponce Inlet, and backcountry. Redfish schools can be found by sight in skinny water, the grass flats and adjacent sand sloughs in the lagoon area, the shallow mud and oyster bays, coves, and creeks in the backcountry. On sunny days fish stay shallow enjoying the sun warmed water, dark mud bottom and grass as well as oyster bars can hold more warmth in cold water. On cloudy chilly days, some will still be in the shallows, but also be looking closer to the edges near deep water as they drop off deeper during the colder night time temperatures. A live select size, tail hooked shrimp can be the go to bait, but small live finger mullet, Gulp shrimp, and small size soft plastics will catch both reds and trout on the flats. Work the schools slow as they are usually spooky, quiet push pole or slow speed trolling motor to get in casting distance, or set up on anchor and wait for them to return to your location. Large size seatrout also are found in the winter shallows, they can be the wariest of all, long distance sighting and accurate cast gives the best chance to fool a big speck into biting. The big ones can be solitary fish but on occasion schools of trout are also seen on the winter flats. Smaller trout generally school in deeper water, off drop offs, in holes, sloughs, and deeper hard bottom, they will be near the bottom in the chilly water, a live shrimp dropped with a split shot, and light weighted jigs of 1/16 or 1/8 oz. also a good choice. Small size baits and lures are usually best during the cold months which are more the size of winter meals, also time to go as light as possible with fluorocarbon leaders, weights and terminal tackle as stealth is an important factor in clear water. To target sheepshead, fiddler crabs are the best bait, followed by small live or peeled shrimp, best places to fish are bridge or dock pilings, also the Ponce Inlet jetty rocks. Serious sheepy fishers will chum their spot by scraping barnacles off the pilings or dropping cracked oysters to the bottom. Use a smaller sharp hook as they have a small hard moth, use just enough weight to hold your bait close the pilings, keeping your rig as stealthy as possible in the clear water. For black drum use shrimp or piece of blue crab, fish the bottom in channels, inlet rocks, deeper holes, drop offs, around the bridges on the ICW and Haulover Canal, tactics for shallow drum schools are same as for reds, being crustacean eaters, shrimp and crabs go to baits. Bluefish of any size are good hard fighters, schools of small ones in the backcountry are fun on light tackle or fly, bigger blues can be at the inlet and surf in early winter, cut bait, live mullet, shrimp, flashy lures all good. Snook season closes December 15, so catch and release only on linesiders until next February. Capt. Shrimping Report
Volusia County okeechobee
CAPT. LEE NOGA
T
he shrimp are running! Bye-Bye Hurricane Irma and thank-you for at least saving Volusia County and our shrimping season. I am sad to report that Titusville Pier sustained extensive damages. We have not been given any information concerning a re-open date. This loss is catastrophic to the non-boater community. Titusville pier is an iconic land mark. However, the relief bridge at the mouth of the Max Brewer Bridge parking lot entrance should spit shrimp to the delight of those casting a net. The news is reporting we have a 40% chance of another warm winter. This would make the 3rd year in a row. The take away from this is the water is going to be dirty and we will be plagued with warm water bait fish that cover up our lights and black out our dipping light fields. Good news, is 1 gallon of Edgewater shrimp were reported on November 5th and they were small but around 4” ( my favorite size). This excites me. This means they will grow up to be cowboys and will be our large to jumbo in January and February (5-7 inches). Last season Hurricane Matthew reduced our Volusia shrimp run by killing off a generation of size when it ran over Mosquito Lagoon. We may just have an epic season in Volusia County in 2018. I am seeing higher volume of pink and brown shrimp this November compared to years past. The million dollar question will be, what if any, of 2017 high volume of those rogue jumbo white shrimp (blue/green tail) will bless our 2018 season. It is simple reasoning, millions of shrimp in close proximity fertilize and lay eggs. Did any eggs get laid in Volusia and Brevard County? We are still are reporting a skunk for white shrimp over summer to early Fall in Daytona and Ormond area. Reports at Railroad Bridge are not encouraging for winter shrimp but that can change in a moment. The fact that shrimpers are scouting and dipping shrimp so early in November could be the a sign we will have an epic season. Does this mean we are going to see the 200 boat weekend brigade again in Volusia? No big deal if we do there is plenty of shrimp to fill freezers for everyone. Dirty water is going to be the biggest problem to overcome this season. Warm water bait fish blacking out the lights are going to the the Ben Cubbage pulls in the first gallon of shrimp of the 2nd problem. R e m e m b e r , seaon in Edgewater, Florida M O N O FILAMENT frame nets AKA box nets are illegal. You are required to use green polypropylene (my least favorite, pull very low counts), nylon (my favorite & what I use), cotton or linen bag material. We will be talking about this and all the issues in great details at my seminars and in my educational forum on Facebook, “Florida Shrimping AcademyTips & Tricks”. s I’m writing this I am sitting on one of the many docks and piers lining the Halifax River and Wilber Bay with a live mullet on one rod and a live shrimp on the other. I wanted to get away from the confines of the bait shop and enjoy some solitude on a wonderful mid-November morning, while thinking back on the fishing we have enjoyed over this past year. And at the same time get in some fishing of my own. Less than thirty minutes into my early morning fishing trip and I have a nice fat Whiting in the cooler, and have released a couple nice Jacks, an under slot Redfish and a small Mangrove Snapper. That’s the way to start your day. Anyway on to this month’s fishing report. This time of year many anglers start to think about putting away their fishing gear for the winter. For the most part they couldn’t be making a bigger mistake. Yes the cold fronts will become more frequent and the temps will fall, but the fishing will remain strong provided the fronts are not too brutal. We just have to adapt and change our fishing habits with this seasonal change to be successful. Redfish, Trout, Flounder, Snook, Black Drum and Mangroves can still be found and caught, just not in the same places and with the same technics. Early morning hours will still be productive, however if the water and air temps are leaning towards the chilly side the fish will be more lethargic. You will want to slow down your retrieves if using artificial, and if using bait give the fish more time to locate your offering and take their time eating. Once the sun gets up in the sky fish will become more active with the water around them becoming warmer. Now is the time to concentrate on the flats and backwaters where the shallow water will be the first to take advantage of the sun and start to warm. Live shrimp and live mullet will still be the baits of choice for most of the species mentioned above. However to be more successful with Black Drum
Vince with a 29” Snook he caught from a dock on the east side of River.
(Above left) Wink with a 22” Flounder caught on a guided kayak fishing tour w/David near Spruce Creek. you will want to use fiddler crabs as your number one bait. Live shrimp fished under a popping cork will be deadly for Reds, Trout and Flounder, while live mullet fished around the docks and mangrove bushes is the ticket to success on Snook. Salty Dawg Outfitters in Ponce Inlet has all the bait and tackle you need for a successful day fishing as well as the best info in the area. Let us get you hooked up and on the fish! Until next time tight lines and light winds. See you on the water. Ed Farlow is the co-owner of Salty Dawg Outfitters Bait & Tackle located in Ponce Inlet next to the Ponce boat ramp.

s a professional angler and guide for 30 years, there’s something I’ve noticed about the mechanics of bass fishing that differentiates a pro from most amateurs. As soon it hits the water, a pro is in control of the lure. A common mistake I see while fishing with novice anglers is control. They cast their lure, they let it free fall, and as soon as it hits the grass it hangs up… a wasted cast. In most situations where I do most of my fishing, on Lake Okeechobee, the lure should be working the instant it hits the water. A pro casts his lure, and as soon as it hits the water the reel is engaged, the rod is up and the lure is working efficiently all the way back to the boat. Learn how to cast and engage the lure with your rod up; this is very important. I see so many anglers with their rod pointing at their lure on the retrieve. Generally, if your rod is pointing at the lure, bad things can happen. You are not in control, and you can actually keep a fish from getting the lure. A big bass usually sucks a lure in from a distance. If you don’t have your rod up, you can keep the lure from reaching the fish. The action of your rod will let the lure go to the fish, and you will hook them deeper in their mouths. When you are fishing moving lures like crankbaits and spinnerbaits, you need a rod that has a softer tip for this reason. If you are using a stiff rod and braided line that has no stretch, when that big bass hits your lure you will feel the bite but you will keep the fish from getting it. Many years ago, Gary Cline—one of the best anglers ever—realized that when graphite rods came on the scene back in the 70s that he was losing a lot more fish than when he used the softer glass rods. He went back to the soft-tip glass rods for all his moving baits, and it made a big difference. Since then, rod companies have made graphite rods with softer tips. I remember a tournament in Texas many years ago. I was casting a Shad Rap on my glass rod, and my partner was fishing the same lure on his new graphite rod. All the fish he caught were on the back hook, while every bass I caught had the whole lure deep in their mouths. This taught us a lot about how the action of a rod can help you catch more fish. Bottom line is: when you make a cast, engage the reel as soon as the lure hits the water and hold your rod up to feel the lure. This tip will help you catch more fish and make you a better angler. An extremely successful professional bass tournament angler, Steve Daniel is a 30-year veteran Okeechobee guide and the voice of Okeechobee fishing on WRVO Radio Network 1’s Hooked up with Steve and Deb. oat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) has estimated that more than 63,000 recreational boats were damaged or destroyed as a result of both Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, with a combined dollar damage estimate of $655 million to boats alone. These numbers are strikingly close to 2012’s Hurricane Sandy, which remains the single-largest industry loss with more than 65,000 boats damaged and more than $650 million in estimated losses. Breaking down the 2017 season storms, Hurricane Irma damaged or destroyed 50,000 vessels with approximately $500 million in recreational boat damage. About 13,500 boats were damaged or lost costing $155 million in boat damage as the result of Hurricane Harvey. “These two storms were as different as night and day,” said BoatUS Marine Insurance Program vice president of claims Rick Wilson. “The boats that were hit the hardest by Harvey were located on a relatively small slice of Texas coast, while we saw damage to recreational vessels from Irma in every corner of Florida. “While Hurricane Irma’s losses are significant, it could have been much worse,” added Wilson. “Irma ultimately traveled up Florida’s west coast and not the east, which was initially forecast. And while locations in the right front quadrant of the storm such as Big Pine Key and Marathon were hit hard with a Category 4 storm, Irma lost strength as it approached the mainland and swept up Florida. As the storm passed east of Tampa Bay, waters receded and came back gradually, also lessening surge damage.”

EXPERT ADVICE
Gifts for Anglers Choosing Sunglasses As A Gift DAVID MANEY, FOWLER’S SUNGLASSES
C
hoosing a pair of sunglasses as a gift for someone else can be a tricky endeavor. On the one hand you have your opinion of what you think they will like and then there’s the issue of the fit and their face shape that can make all the difference in the world in their overall happiness with the pair that you’ve selected. Obviously, the best way to ensure your selection is exactly what they’re looking for is to have them help you. Go to your favorite sunglass seller, and let your friend try numerous pairs on. Then, once you know their favorite, the task is easy and foolproof. But if you’re not able to put that together prior to a purchase, the next best alternative is to make sure the company you’re buying the sunglasses from has an honest, no-loophole return policy. Yes, save your receipt. I also recommend including a small note with the sunglasses saying: I hope these fit, and are what you wanted. The store name here said you can exchange them if you like. At Fowler’s, we make sure our customers have an easy and helpful exchange process. The right pair of sunglasses can be a gift that is appreciated for many, many years, and we make giving the perfect gift a little bit easier. For more information contact David Maney at 888-3409021 or www.FowlersSunglasses.com

The latest addition to XTRATUF’s iconic legacy collection features an advanced new outsole that surpasses the SRC slip resistance rating, a textured heel for easy on/off that won’t get caught in gill nets, and a contoured topline binding so it does not rub harshly against calves. Acid- and chemical-resistant uppers along with shin and bib guards keep fishermen protected while a Polyurethane insole ensures comfort for long days on deck. All boots within the Legacy collection are 100 percent waterproof with unique performance features. Each boot is made with XTRATUF’s signature triple dipping technique, which creates a seamless barrier that is highly resistant to many organic and inorganic acids, chemicals and contaminants.
