In The Sailfish Capital of the World By Nick Carter
C
apt. Scott Fawcett didn’t hesitate when asked to make a prediction about sailfish season off Florida’s Treasure Coast. His outlook is extremely bullish. “This is going to be one of the best sailfish seasons we’ve had in a long time,” he said. “By the middle of December, I think we’re going to see the best sailfishing we’ve had in the last 10 years.” Fawcett’s optimism is based on a number of factors he’s followed for more than three decades fishing Florida’s Atlantic Coast. December and January is the historic peak season from Vero south to Palm Beach, Fla. The bite is heavily influenced by winter fronts and the proximity of the Gulf Stream, and everyone is eagerly awaiting strong northeast winds to usher sailfish south to their wintering grounds and closer to shore. Closer to shore isn’t far out of Stuart, Fla., where Fawcett’s Off the Chain fishing charters is based. In an area known as the “Sailfish Capital of the World,” it’s typically a short 8-mile ride in his 4 NATIONAL

32’ Contender “Off The Chain” to reach the color edges and temperature breaks where sailfish hunt. In November, Fawcett’s attention was tuned to fishing reports some 600 miles to the north off the coast of North Carolina. “We had a phenomenal sailfish summer,” he said, speaking of the action that usually goes down from April to June or July most years. “It seems like that body of fish disappeared offshore for a while and then showed up off Morehead City. Last time that happened, we had a fantastic season. I expect to see good numbers of sailfish in December.” With the relatively flat bottom out of Stuart, blind trolling to cover water along the temperature breaks, color edges and reef lines is the preferred tactic. Fawcett pulls a dredge, an umbrella rig of some 30 or 40 baits and lures, to locate and draw in fish. “You’ll see them come up behind the teaser,” Fawcett said. “Then you’ll put your hook baits in front of the fish.”

It’s up to the anglers to manipulate those “hook baits”—usually ballyhoo on a circle hook— in front of the fish. “On a good day, expect five or six sailfish bites and the same amount of dolphin bites and then some bonito or a big kingfish mixed in,” Fawcett said. “Occasionally, we’ll also get a blackfin or a big wahoo while trolling or kite fishing.” Kite fishing out of Stuart requires the right conditions. Sometimes when Fawcett finds a good current rip or color change, he’ll drop the trolling motor and deploy kites and live baits. In years past, there have been moratoriums, then come backs, then the fish seem to “disappear” by simply not coming into the bay, then everything seems to rebound again. and I do hope all sportsmen will adhere to the regulations. These swings affect a lot of things like tourism dollars and fishing tournaments. One of the longest-running and best-run rockfish tournaments is the Rockfish Shootout, held at the Oyster Farm on Virginia’s Eastern Shore in December. If you are thinking about coming to our area, I highly suggest you try this tourney out. It is always a great event. If you are coming to the Chesapeake Bay and are new to rockfishing, here is some good advice. As always, contact local tackle shops to get the latest and current info. maryland fishing maps - what’s up with those names? On a recent episode of the Maryland Fishing Line we tackled the subject of unraveling the often times mysterious names of the places we routinely fish throughout the state. Have you ever seen the Internet meme where Andy Dwyer from the hit television show Parks & Rec states he doesn’t understand some commonly known fact and follows up with the phrase “And at this point I am too afraid to ask?” Yeah, sometimes it can feel just like that talking to other anglers around the state when it comes to the cryptic location names folks use. You’ve heard them before – names like Tea Kettle Shoals, Seven Foot Knoll, Gum Thickets, Summer Gooses, Chinese Mud, or Cornfield Harbor. They can seem confusing to the new angler and even many times unknown to the seasoned angler when they are not locations they routinely fish. But there is some good news out there. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has a page on their website dedicated to fishing maps that includes public angler access locations, Maryland boat ramps, trout stockings, tidal/nontidal dividing lines, oyster bars, and so much more. There are three maps buried in the mix simply labeled Upper Bay Map, Middle Bay Map, and Lower Bay Map. Each of these maps when opened on your phone or computer gives you a visual guide to where these named locations exist on the Bay.

As sportsman we are blessed to have the opportunity of spending time with family and friends in the great outdoors. It is also a time of preparation for gatherings filled with holiday cheer and the opportunity to give gifts to ones that we care about the most in our lives. This month also marks the conclusion of the Striped Bass season and the start to various hunting seasons here in Maryland. It is a time of great elation and reflection of fruits the Chesapeake has provided for us this past year. Though this Striped Bass season is set to conclude earlier than in the past. There is still some time left to target our favorite fish in the beginning of December. The migration and wintering patterns are in full effect and theses fish can often be found gathering on channel edges and at the contrasting depths of the Chesapeake Bay. Their activity and hunger are often focused around temperature and stimulation of day light during this time period. Anglers will often jig or troll for these fish, targeting them by placing there baits in an anticipated strike zone with great control, and temperament. We will often will select afternoons to target these Striped Bass that have favorable conditions for our anglers aboard The Marylander. Unseasonably warm weather can be a treat for anglers and lead to more activity when fishing during the winter season. We try to take full advantage of these days
during the month when provided this gift from mother nature. Though the Striped Bass season finally is here, we still have time to waterfowl hunt and appreciate the changing of the seasons in Maryland. Sea Ducks Season will be our focus at Maryland Fishing and Hunting until early January. Targeting species such as Surf Scoters and Old Squaw for our hunters on the Chesapeake Bay. What ever your passion maybe, it is more important than ever to appreciate the time spent with friends and family outside. Maryland’s great outdoors continue to provide the resources and opportunities for us sportsman to enjoy and December is truly one of the greatest times of the year to be a Marylander. This December we also urge you to support those that have supported us this season. Your local tackle and hunting stores are not only your regions experts, they are the resource to delight your sportsman this holiday season. BANG BANG ROCKFISH BITES Sometimes the simplest recipe is the best. This is one of those instances. These bite-size nuggets are crispy and flaky with just the right amount of zing. How can you go wrong when you add Old Bay and Sriracha to the same dish?!? INGREDIENTS 2 Rockfish filets 1.5 cups Panko crumbs 3 Eggs (well beaten) 1 cup All-purpose flour 1 tsp Old Bay Seasoning
Bang Bang Sauce ½ cup Mayonnaise ¼ cup Thai sweet chili sauce 1-2 tsp of Sriracha (to taste)
Clean and cut your rockfish filets into chunks of approximately an inch in size. Place your Panko crumbs, eggs and flour into individual bowls mixing your Old Bay into the flour. Dip rockfish chunks into flour, then eggs, and finally your Panko crumbs. Place the chunks onto a flat baking sheet that has been sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. Spray the tops of the chunks with cooking oil (non-stick cooking spray will work if you do not have an oil sprayer). Cook at 425 degrees for 12-15 minutes. Once you have your fish in the oven it’s time to mix all your sauce ingredients together to create your bang bang sauce. PRO TIP: Top it off with some fresh salsa! or make fish tacos!

december FRESHWATER FORECAST You will still find plenty of great opportunities to catch freshwater species into the month of December throughout the state. In Western Maryland trout can still be found in the put and take areas but you may have to search since these fish will now be spread out. The key to success lies in covering a lot of water with baits such as in-line spinners, small spoons, or flies like wooly buggers or streamers. On the Upper Potomac it is wise to check water conditions before heading out but on the right days you should still be able to locate smallmouth and walleye. The same applies for the lower Susquehanna below
the Conowingo Dam. Throughout the state largemouth will remain active moving between the shallower water feed zones and the deeper water holding areas. Try throwing tubes, small crankbaits, slow rolling spinner baits, or grubs targeting on deep structure such as sunken wood or rock. Pick and choose your days for Snakehead – when you get a few days of warm weather lining up in a row and the shallow water begins to warm it’s the perfect time to target them with large minnows under bobbers. You could also find success with Mepps inline spinners for Snakehead so don’t be afraid to mix it up.

Most people credit this crab house seasoning to another product but J.O. has been the crab houses’ seasoning of choice since 1945. J.O. Spice, started by J.O. (James Ozzle) Strigle and his wife Dot in Baltimore City in 1945, is celebrating its 75th Anniversary. A native of Tangier Island, Va., J.O. Strigle brought the seafood spice blend he created in his kitchen on the island to Maryland. Jane McPhaul, J.O.’s daughter took over operations of the family business in the late eighties while her son, Don Ports, was serving in the Marine Corps. In 1990 Don joined his mother in the family business with a vision to expand. In the summer of 1991 Don met his spice girl, Ginger, with the pick up line, “you’re destined to be mine; you’re named for a spice,” said J.O. Spice Company president Don Ports to wife Ginger Ports the moment they met. Twenty eight years later, Don and Ginger- alongside their children Brittany, Tyler and Bethany, are continuing the family traditions of quality seasonings, spices, and more at reasonable prices at their Halethorpe based J.O. Spice Company. “We can provide crab houses everything they need for the crab eating experience, minus the crabs”, Don says. The company added crab boxes, crab paper, bushel baskets, crab knives, crab mallets and a variety of other items to their offerings. “We purchased our first laser engraver and that opened the door to the retail gift world and personalized options,” Don says. J.O. specializes in custom blended seasonings for pizza companies, pit beef stands, butchers, potato chip companies and more. BLUE CAT CRUSHES GEORGIA RECORD
A
Florida man fishing Georgia’s Chattahoochee River caught a 110-pound, 6-ounce blue catfish Oct. 17. The monster blue cat crushed the existing state record by more than 17 pounds. Tim Trone, of Havana, Fla., was fishing the Chatt Kat tournament out of Florence Marina on the upper end of Lake Eufaula when he caught the monster fish. He had run way up the river south of Columbus, Ga., and dropped baits in about 50 feet of water when the giant catfish picked up a piece of cut bream Trone was using for bait. Surprisingly, the fish didn’t put up much of a fight. “I reeled it up like a 100-pound log,” Trone told a reporter from the Tallahassee Democrat. “It was just a little bump. It took about three minutes to reel it in.” Trone’s blue catfish bested the previous record of 93 pounds, which has stood since 2017. That fish was caught on the Altamaha River in southeast Georgia. The current IGFA all-tackle world record weighed 143 pounds. It was caught on Virginia’s Kerr Lake.
