Living The T
he origins of Salt Life are pure. With two simple words in a scrawling font, the iconic brand began as a tattoo inked on the backs of a couple of surfing fishermen in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. Four hard-core watermen began grassroots promotion of the design in 2003, selling bumper stickers and T-shirts. During the humble early years, no one foresaw the eventual scope of the worldwide phenomenon they had launched. Salt Life has come to represent everything everyone loves about the ocean. At a glance, the now-familiar logo proudly displays a love of the saltwater lifestyle. Fisherman and diver Jeff Stillwell, who just happens to be president of Salt Life, said he is blessed to be part of the phenomenon. “Whatever attracts you to the water, Salt Life represents that,” he said. “If you happen to love to fish, it means fishing to you. I happen to be an avid diver. It means diving to me. If you’re a surfer, it means surfing. If you just like hanging out on the beach and enjoying a cold beverage, it means that.” No longer just T-shirts and decals, Salt Life has grown to include a huge assortment of gear and apparel. Stillwell said they’ve got a line of waterproof gear on the horizon, and he’s excited about the territory expansion of Salt Life Lager. Yep… Salt Life launched an easy-drinking beer to celebrate its 15th anniversary in 2018. “It goes hand-in-hand with our lifestyle,” Stillwell said. “We’re all out there on the water for a great fun-filled day in the sun, and at the end of the day our customer loves to kick back, as do I, with a nice cold beer.” But all the fun, and all the success, comes with responsibility. Without healthy oceans to play in, there would be no Salt Life. The company has joined with conservation organizations like Artificial Reefs International and Roatan Marine Park in protecting and enhancing the resources so that future generations can enjoy living the Salt Life.

Christian’s catches included the fly division’s largest individual barracuda, measuring 47.75 inches. Andrew Hunt of Marathon, Fla., won the Cuda Bowl’s spin division championship, releasing barracuda totaling 278.5 inches. He was guided by Capt. Chad Huff of Fort Myers, Fla. The tournament’s female grand champion was Julie Leeman of Tucson, Ariz., who released barracuda totaling 240.5 inches on spin tackle. She fished with Capt. Chris Leeman. Kai Decker of St. Augustine, Fla., earned the title of top junior angler. Guided by Capt. Mike O’Brien of Summerland Key, Fla., the 13-yearold released 124.5 inches of barracuda. The tournament’s Ben Gravett Memorial Team Trophy went to Florida anglers Bob Sellers of Sanford and Eddie Hunt of Deltona, fishing with Capt. Bo Sellers of Ramrod Key, Fla. The anglers released 12 fish measuring a total of 524.75 inches. Trent Miller of Hamilton, Illinois, caught the largest individual barracuda in the spin division. He released the 51.75-inch fish while guided by Capt. Scott Irvine of Key West. Marathon angler Wade Mayberry scored the most releases in the spin division with 32. He fished with Capt. Albert Ponzoa, also of Marathon. In the fly division, Jim Knowles of Round Hill, Va., released 22 barracuda to take the “most releases” title. His captain was Peter Heydon of Key West. elcome to the challenge of spring fishing. I know a lot of people struggle to consistently pattern fish in the month of March, so I have put together a few key points that should help out. Although the days may warm up considerably, the

water can still stay chilly. The continuation of passing fronts can drop the water temperature quite quickly as it struggles to climb up the thermometer, keeping fish less aggressive. In March, I still hold onto some of the same structure I key on in the coldest months. Although I may start to mix in more shell and grass into my target areas, one thing that needs to remain from the cold weather handbook is quick and easy access to deeper water. With frequent cold fronts, although they may not have the same punch, the fish will still look to retreat to more stable water temps in the depths of a general area. The warmer and sunnier the day, the farther the fish will stray from that deep-water access, but they will not completely abandon its safety. I like to focus on the outer edge of the guts that lead from deeper water to the flats early, and I’ll follow them up on the flat as the day warms. With the fronts comes dreaded high pressure! Here are a couple tactics I rely on in this situation. First, and typically the most productive, is to downsize your lure. This is especially true in the spring when forage is young. I also like to go with a natural or translucent color patterns for a more natural approach. I tend to slow down and work lures closer to the bottom, as well, when the barometer is on the rise. My next approach, when nothing is working in a high barometer setting, is to do something completely opposite of what I just recommended. When all else fails, I tie on a very noisy lure that creates a lot of water displacement. This could be a noisy topwater, a noisy rattling lure or a lipped crankbait-style plug. At this stage, I am just looking for a reaction bite. If I can aggravate them enough, they just might take the bait. Although these techniques are polar opposites, I find the fish to be on one end of the spectrum or the other when dealing with high pressure. You just need to experiment and figure them out. IN THE NEWS . . . 2019 LOS SUEÑOS TOURNAMENTS BEGIN WITH THE LADIES

os Sueños Resort and Marina held the first leg of its sixth annual Los Sueños Signature Triple Crown billfish series, presented by Chantilly Air, January 16-19, 2019. A total of 44 of the world’s most competitive billfishing teams comprised of 210 individual anglers challenged each other over three days of fishing, releasing a total of 648 billfish, including 582 sails and 66 marlin for a per boat average of 15 billfish releases. LADIES ONLY ONE-DAY TOURNAMENT Held on Tuesday, January 15th the first annual Los Sueños Ladies Only Tournament, presented by Chantilly Air and sponsored by Maverick and Galati Yacht Sales, brought together 49 individual anglers participating on 17 boats. It seemed like a clear battle between Family and Friends and D.A. Sea who were tied both for points and on time just half an hour before lines out. Fish Tank (anglers Laura Jessen and Michelle Keeney) surprised everyone though, calling in a marlin hook up which they went on to release at 4:04 pm for the win, having released 8 sails and 1 marlin for 1300 points. D.A. Sea (anglers Valerie Dunn, Susan McCart, and Judy Duffie) ended up second with 1100 points with 6 sailfish and 1 marlin release, and Family and Friends(anglers Jackie Kopp, Kristin Feller, and Andrea White) rounded out the leaderboard in third with 1000 points after releasing 10 sails.
Awards were presented the following day and the ladies took to the stage to receive their cash prizes and trophies, sponsored by Gray Taxidermy. A total of $27,500 was handed out, 50% going to first, 30% to second, and 20% to third. Individual angler points follow the ladies through the Triple Crown and will be tallied to their total scores from that event to determine the Top Female Angler Overall. So far, Jackie Kopp of Family and Friends is well in the lead with 700 points from the Ladies Only and 1500 points from the first leg of the Triple Crown. TRIPLE CROWN DAY 1 It was Numero Uno who fittingly released fish “numero uno” of the tournament at 8:05 am on Day 1, January 17th. By 10:00 am the competitive fleet of 44 teams and 210 anglers had released 89 billfish, including 84 sails and 5 marlin. Tarheel took an early lead with 800 points, over The King and I and Blue Eagle, each with 700 points. The King and I showed their stripes early with 1800 points by noon, taking a 600 point lead over Tranquilo with 1200 points and Outlaw with 1100 points. Over 40 fish were released
in the next two hours, but the leaderboard changed very little, with The King and I releasing one more sail for 1900 points, Tranquilo staying steady with 1200 points, and Outlaw rounding out the top three, also with 1 more sailfish release for 1200 points. Although The King and I ended the day in first with 2000 points, there was definitely some jockeying in the latter part of the afternoon; Wire We Here ended up releasing 6 sails and 2 marlin for 1600 points and second place, and Blue Eagle released the same fish for the same points, just 13 minutes later to take third for the day. TRIPLE CROWN DAY 2 The King and I had a slow start to Day 2 with zero releases by 10 am, but managed to hold on to their first place spot. Wire We Here released four sails in the same period to tie The King and I with 2000 points, just 1 sailfish release and 100 points ahead of Reel Pushy. By noon the fleet had released a two-day total of 380 billfish and Fish Tank had pushed The King and I down to third on time after Wire We Here, both with 2100 points, and taking top spot with 2300 points. Family and Friends were keeping their name in front of spectators, taking top spot with 2600 points by 2 pm, followed by Fish Tank with 2400 points and Reel Pushy in third with 2300 points. By the end of the day Family and Friends had earned enough points after releasing 7 sails and 2 marlin for a two-day total of 2600 points, to keep their first place position. Reel Pushy released 7 sails and 2 marlin on Day 2 for a two-day total of 2500 points, and Fish Tank rounded out the top three with 2400 points after releasing 9 sails on Day 2. The top 9 teams were all within one marlin and one sail of the lead going in to Day 3. TRIPLE CROWN DAY 3 Day 3 followed the same trend as the first two days with a good morning bite. By 10 am the fleet had released 61 billfish for a three-day total of 522 billfish (469 sails and 53 marlin). The King and I were vying for the leaderboard and had amassed 3300 points to take first over Reel Pushy in second with 3100 points, and Tranquilo in third with 2800 points. At noon it was still anyone’s game. Fish Tank was in first with 3500 points. The King and I was in second, now with 3400 points, and Reel Pushy in third with one more sailfish for 3200 points. The 2 pm leaderboard would end up being a prediction of the Leg 1 finishers, showing Fish Tank in first with 4200 points, The King and I in second with 3400 points, and Reel Pushy in third with 3300 points. Fish Tank went on to release four more sails, ending the day – and the tournament – with 4600 points. The King and I and Reel Pushy kept the same points, Reel Pushy tying with Tranquilo on time, but releasing their last fish two hours before. ‘BIG OH’ CAPTURES VICTORY & $122,400 IN 2019 ROCKSTAR OFFSHORE TOURNAMENT

arina Pez Vela [Quepos, Costa Rica] – At day’s first light, a quiet harbor came to life as fiftytwo tournament teams, anglers, and crews assembled in anticipation for what has quickly become “Central America’s Richest Fishing Tournament”. As the sun rose above the lush, rainforest canopy adjacent to Marina Pez Vela, a choreographed procession of participating vessels – both large & small – exited to the Pacific, greeted by the vibrant tunes of a solo, heavy-metal guitarist. The clock struck 0700 and engines purred as inboards and outboards throttled up in a race to the fertile, bluewater grounds in hopes of capitalizing on Costa Rica’s incredible offering of game & billfish species. The 3rd Annual PELAGIC ROCKSTAR Offshore Tournament had begun… The ROCKSTAR Offshore Tournament is a team event held annually each January which focuses on the diverse variety of species available in the waters of Pacific Costa Rica. Featuring multiple marinaside bashes, live rock ‘n roll concerts, and an offshore tournament extravaganza, the ROCKSTAR is the event both new and savvy tournament teams look forward to every year. This tournament hosted both a large (35’ and over) and small (34’ and under) boat category, with general divisions of: Billfish Release, Tuna, and Dorado. $500,000 in cash prizes were presented to teams for their performance in releasing the most aggregate billfish points (sailfish, blue marlin, black marlin, striped marlin) and/or weighing the heaviest two-fish total of each gamefish species (tuna & dorado) during the two-day tournament. The 2019 event rocked Costa Rica beginning on January 11th as 52-teams with 261-anglers finalized their registration and jackpot bets to a live rock concert playing live on the main amphitheater stage. ROCKSTAR Tournament Village was bustling with energy as crowds flocked vendor tents where tournament apparel and merchandise was available; and to PELAGIC’s Flagship Superstore – a unique addition to Marina Pez Vela’s waterfront retail landscape. The 52-team tournament fleet experienced incredible fishing on day-one of the tournament, with

a total of 209 marlin and sailfish released, and a busy weigh station hoisting a steady stream of quality dorado and yellowfin tuna. In the Billfish Division, Team NSATIA BILL cleaned up shop by accruing 1100-points for 11 Pacific Sailfish releases which was good enough to sweep the daily billfish jackpots. Combined with their 3rd Place performance in the Dorado Division, NSATIA BILL took home a check for $93,600. Team FIRE FLY weighed in a 54.4-lb. Yellowfin Tuna to take the tuna daily jackpot of $12,400 while TENACIOUS brought a 33.0-lb. dorado to the scales, earning them the dorado daily jackpot of $15,200. In the Small Boat Category, Team Desert Plastering aboard AMY’S DREAM earned the daily billfish jackpot of $1,800 by releasing 3 sailfish (300-point). A 62.4-lb. yellowfin tuna earned Team CDP Diamond aboard SWORDFISH $1,400 and a 36.6-lb. dorado earned GUNNER $1,600. Fishing continued to fire on day-two of the tournament as 216 combined billfish were released and the dorado bite was on fire. Team BIG OH stole the show with 16 sailfish releases, earning them 1600-points and sweeping all levels of daily billfish jackpots. MISS BEHAVIN’ scored the largest tuna of the day (60.8-lbs) to take the tuna daily jackpot, while TAG TEAM took home the dorado daily with a solid 44.2lb. fish. In the Small Boat Category, KELLY DAWN weighed-in the tournament’s largest dorado – a stud 49.0-lb. bull dorado – to earn their division’s Dorado victory and the day-two jackpot, good for $4,600. After two-days of tournament competition, 261 anglers combined to release a staggering 424 billfish (413 sailfish, 9 blue marlin, 1 black marlin, 1 striped marlin) along with 151 dorado and 22 yellowfin tuna. Upon the tournament’s conclusion, the marina was amplified by the sounds of The Kin Rivera Band as teams and onlookers alike were anxious to hear the final results. Z-Gastro Bar, Flor de Caña, & Heineken once again provided a great party atmosphere in the PELAGIC “Pura Vida” Beach Club, while a giant inflatable TV screen was erected just before the awards ceremony as the entire crowd was treated to an incredible Rockstar! Tournament recap video. And the results are in… When all was said and done, the 2019 ROCKSTAR Offshore Tournament crown went to Team BIG OH. A high-scoring second day - spearheaded by the tournament’s Top Overall Angler, Gray Ingram - catapulted the team to the top of the leaderboard as they tallied a total of 26 sailfish releases for the two-day tournament and a score of 2600 points to earn 1st Place Billfish Division honors. In conjunction with sweeping all levels of the day two billfish jackpot, BIG OH won an impressive $122,400! TAG TEAM weighed a 44.2-lb. dorado on the second day to take the daily jackpot. Combining that fish with their day one dorado of 22.0-lbs. gave them a 2-day aggregate total of 66.2-lbs. – enough to take 1st Place in the Dorado Division and a total winnings of $30,800. Weighing respective 41.2-lb. and 38.8-lb. yellowfin tunas on days 1 & 2 of the tournament was Team Sea Hawk Paint aboard OPEN FLY. Their combined weight of 80.0-lbs. won them 1st Place Tuna Division and an earnings of $15,600. Team Desert Plastering aboard AMY’S DREAM was the top overall team in the Small Boat Category. They took home the 1st Place trophy in the Small Boat Billfish Division, as well as both daily billfish jackpots with their combined 9 sailfish releases (9000-pts.) to win $9,600. The evening’s celebration continued as Queen’s hit single “We are the Champions” resonated through amplifiers and fireworks filled the skies above Marina Pez Vela as thousands of onlookers and tournament participants honored the captain, anglers, and crew of BIG OH on their resounding victory. The partied continued well into the night as Kin Rivera Band once again rocked the stage with an eclectic mix new and old rock hits, while tasty cocktails and beers were provided by Flor de Caña & Heineken. Stanford University Starts Satellite Tagging Program
D
r. Larry Crowder and his team from Stanford University started the first leg of a 4-year project called DynaMAR (Dynamic Marine Animal Research) and are placing satellite tags on marlin and sailfish along several points off the Pacific coast. Several local captains out of Los Suenos in Herradura, Marina Pez Vela in Quepos, and Crocodile Bay in Puerto Jimenez participated in the first leg of the project. They started the trip on the Amejave, captained by Rolando Chaves out of Los Suenos. The entire group of scientists explored the seamounts and Fads far from the coast. Later the group split up with part going on the Double Nickel out of Marina Pez Vela with Captain Nick Froelich, and Captain Francisco Lobo out of Crocodile Bay Resort. They placed satellite tags in 3 marlin and 9 sailfish They chose the healthiest looking fish to place the tags. At around $4000 a piece, it pays to be careful. The tags they use have a “double loop” system which limits the drag in the water, keeps the tag close to the body and is black so predator fish will not be attracted to it. The tags will gather information on movement and location, depths traveled and water temperatures while in those areas. They are set to pop off at intervals of, 6, 9, and 12 months to float to the surface. Then, via antenna on the tag, the data is collected by satellite. Later the data will be compared to data from other sources the fish has traveled like surface temperature, currents,
eddies, chlorophyll levels and bait concentrations. They are especially interested in marlin movements and what these fish are doing during an El Nino period. They plan to tag fish every month of the year in future visits. There next visit will be in March or April. The group is collaborating with other past and future studies and when finished should have data on nearly 150 billfish. Hunt for Big Fish’s Larry Dahlberg working with Puntarenas Women Henry Marin, project manager for FECOP, understands the whole picture when it comes to conservation advances. The ban on shrimp trawling is a good example. While one the best things that has happened to the Costa Rican marine environment, it has another side. “What most people don’t realize that the ruling displaced 300 women in Puntarenas who worked as shrimp peelers that now are left unemployed. Many of these women are the head of their household.” explained Marin. During a visit with Larry Dahlberg, legendary fisherman, lure maker, and host of television show Hunt for Big Fish last July at ICAST, the annual American Sportfishing Association event, Marin and Dahlberg hit on a conversation that was close to heart for both, Fisheries Conservation. Both also agreed there is a social aspect to conservation. That conservation has a cost. Sometimes that cost is jobs lost. Marin explained the shrimp trawling issue here.

Former shrimp peelers meet with Fecop’s Henry Marin
Marin’s recent study of coastal communities in Costa Rica showed sport fishing contributes more than $500 million to the economy of the country making up for 13% of all tourist dollars spent here. Many of the people working in sport fishing used to work in the commercial fishing industry. This shows how conservation can have a positive aspect on people as well. Larry Dahlberg with the great Lefty Greh
Dahlberg who has designed many famous fishing lures and was inducted into the International Game Fish Association Hall of Fame offered to come down and teach these women displaced from the shrimping industry how to make fishing lures since they were well adapted to working with their hands. Marin started the leg-work months ago when he contacted the women’s group to find if there was an interest from them. Then meetings with INCOPESCA, in charge of Costa Rica fisheries and INA, Costa Rica’s technical institute were held to seek their collaboration. Both groups were eager to participate. On his part Dahlberg enlisted the help of Mike Faupel, President of Alumilite Engineering Company who owns Make Lure.com and Amazing Casting products, suppliers of molding and casting products and Brad Roberts, a well-known lure maker and owner of Jaw Sportswear. The three came down the last week of February to train group of these women as well as 5 INA instructors who will carry on the training to keep the program growing. Alumilite is donating the materials for the project. The group will be making fishing lures for sale in Costa Rica both hard and soft baits and are planning to develop a bio-degradable lure. After they learn the molding process, they can expand to other products such as souvenirs for the many cruise ship tourists that visit Puntarenas. The project will not be the solution for the unemployment of 300 women but if done properly the co-op they form will employee a good number of women. Marin understands this is only the first step. “They will need help learning how to manage a business and INA has plans to include this in the program. reetings Anglers! Rick here from Dream On Sport Fishing on Costa Rica’s Northern Pacific Coast. At the time of writing this report we’re at midFebruary and the season has been going well. We didn’t see roosters in the numbers we’re used to in January but as of today the bite has improved. We’re hoping to see the rooster-fishery continue to increase heading into March and April. Generally March sees an increase in all species and marks the beginning of our fishing high season. Blues, blacks, sailfish, yellowfin and wahoo are all expected to turn it up. The dorado bite has been incredible and even it should see bigger numbers. Going into April everything should just keep getting better . . . especially sailfish. arch and April will end our windy season and we should continue to have some good fishing. The fishing in January has been very good with blue water up and down the coast. Daily catches of 5 to 10 nice sized mahi-mahi, tuna in the porpoise schools, 3-6 sailfish bites a day and some marlin thrown in have been the norm on a daily basis.

Inshore has been tough because of the wind and the cold water. March and April should bring more marlin offshore. We usually get a good marlin bite in the winter but they have not shown up in big numbers so I expect them to be here February through April. We catch Blue Marlin, Striped Marlin and Black Marlin this time of the year making this a great place for a grand slam, which are 3 billfish species in the same day. I also expect the catches of sailfish, mahi-mahi and tuna to continue with some wahoo scattered in there too. The inshore bite should pick up as the winds start to calm down and the water cleans up. I still recommend to my clients that they book their trip early in their stay, so that in the case on high winds, we can push the fishing date back in hopes of better weather. I do my best to work with my clients and get the most out of every day. Book a boat and take advantage of the great fishing this time of the year.

T
his January and February has been a nice surprise compared to the last two years. We always seem to see a butt load of dorado starting in October and this carries through till the beginning or middle of January and then becomes very scattered. This season the dorado bite has remained strong so far. The billfish have been much more consistent, still not any huge numbers but we are holding our own against places that receive the majority of the fishing publicity in Costa Rica, sometime even exceeding their numbers. The Los Suenos Triple Crown, found up to half the boats running up the coast toward Carrillo, some fishing only 8 miles from where we tie up. With only two full time charter boats working from Puerto Carrillo, you can safely say we have the place to ourselves. We are seeing some incredible nice water, 20 miles offshore it is ink blue, recently there has been a strong NNW current. This year we have already seen five FADs being carried along in this same current. More than I have seen, found or heard of in the past two years combined for our area. A strong indication Kyles first blue marlin of a positive change. A good friend and stellar fishing captain who studies the satellite imagery more diligent than I commented that “ this is the best imagery I have seen for your area in 10 years” Maybe it is too early to tell but a cycle seems to be reappearing. Up to ten years ago it was standard to say that January and February were the best times for marlin and March and April were when the large quantities of sails would show up. Seeing other pelagics like tuna, dorado and wahoo thrown in the whole year. How do you make a prediction for your area without sounding cynical, I’m always going to tell you that the fore coming months are going to be good, and this certainly seems to be the case this year.

he fishing inshore has slowed a little as the clearer water has moved into the area. This makes catching bait a little more challenging. Still we are catching roosterfish but not on every trip. Just recently there has been a nice surge of sardine schools
moving in and hungry tunas, jacks, mackerels and other predators are having a fiesta. For the next couple of months, we expect more and more sardines to make their way into the gulf and along the coast. This drags with it a host of predators like snappers, seabass (corvina), rainbow runners, skipjack tuna, mackerel, jacks and roosterfish. This makes for excellent top water action. The jigging on the rocks usually picks up with jacks, seabass, snappers and amberjack making up most of the catch. The roosterfish are scarcer but it is the time of the year when the big boys are caught. The key is having good bait. Offshore has been on and off with great days and slow days. Sailfish have been around in better numbers than the last two years so this is looking positive. We are also getting some big mahis on most trips. Marlin are around but have been playing a lot with. We have raised some good ones, but most have not been willing to eat. We are expecting the bite to be good a little closer to shore as the water clears. Sails should be showing up a little more consistently with a few marlin in the mix. Big mahis and tunas when the schools are around are expected to be nice additions to the billfish.

T
he fleet fishing offshore out of the Los Sueños marina had consistent, if not always spectacular action with billfish in January and February, but other species picked up the slack. The mahi mahi action remained strong all month, with some truly large fish landed, and the appearance of yellowfin tuna and the occasional wahoo added to the mix. This all added up to a good mixed bag for most boats every day. Expect that trend to improve as we move into March and April, which many knowledgeable captains consider the heart of the fishing season. The tunas should become more plentiful, the mahi action should remain strong, and while sailfish will continue to be the mainstay in the billfish count, look for more blue and striped marlin catches as well. And those who focus on targeting big black marlin by slowtrolling live tunas may be rewarded as well. Boats have spread out in search of the fish offshore of Los Sueños, with some heading south to the drop-off toward Quepos, while others
have ventured west toward Cabo Blanco off Nicoya. The fish may become more concentrated in one spot or another as the season progresses, so up-to-the-minute local knowledge will be valuable, as always. But look for excellent offshore fishing and even better weather, as we move further into summer.

ishing around Los Sueños Resort has been phenomenal for big roosters near the area and looking pretty good for March-April since the bait just made it. With enough bait in the area, fishing should be awesome. At the same time some nice cuberas and broom tail groupers at the reef
are showing up and the bonitos are staying around the reef, making mullet snappers bite at the surface with top water lures. We expect the same for March-April on the reef.
Very nice rooster for Alex Lenoir who fished with us on February 3 with his girlfriend. Nice roosters and bait are making this month great for big roosters.
Nice cubera, caught by good friend George Apsley on January 24th. The cubera bite has been excellent this past December and January.

QUEPOS INSHORE / OFFSHORE REPORT By Benn Gilmour • Jackpot Sport Fishing
W
hat a GREAT start to the year it has been here in Quepos with some truly world class fishing taking place during January & February. Lots of sailfish & blue marlin were caught with some good numbers of striped marlin and several huge black marlin also. The Quepos fleet have been seeing dorado on most offshore trips with some good sized bulls still being caught which are always a welcome addition to any billfish charter! Early February seen a great tuna bite with lots of fish in the 30-80lb category with some larger fish & several 200lb plus fish reported. Our tuna here in Quepos form huge schools typically 20-50 miles Offshore and travel alongside the spinner dolphin megapods, providing some excellent action & not to mention, great sashimi! March should continue to provide some excellent sport for tuna with a few dorado mixed in also. In terms of billfish, January through mid April typically sees the peak of our sailfish bite as huge numbers of big Pacific sailfish congregate just 20+ miles from the coast and can be targeted during full day offshore trips. Costa Rica has long earned a reputation as one of the best sport fishing destinations on the planet and our peak sailfish season plays a huge role in that. Not only are our Pacific sailfish huge in comparison to their Atlantic Nice jig caught cousins, with sailfish averaging African pompano 70-80lbs here in Costa Rica and for Russell Cowell 100lb plus fish very common, but from the Isle of Man, aboard the sheer numbers of fish that GOOD DAY can be caught when the bite is on, is incredible. Double digit sailfish days are not uncommon and every year boats record some truly impressive sailfish release days that will make you question

whether the captain is telling another fisherman’s tale! We have enjoyed some fantastic Inshore fishing in Quepos recently with good catches of roosterfish, snook, jacks, mackerel, snappers & other species. A local commercial fisherman even caught 2 nice sized tarpon in the Quepos area recently and with more & more tarpon turning up in the estuaries of the Southern Costa Rican Pacific after originally making their way through the Panama Canal, it feels only a matter of time before we start seeing a few more rod & line caught tarpon close to the rivermouths in the Quepos area. That would be a welcome surprise to any Inshore trip here on the Pacific! Expect some great roosterfish fishing during Inshore trips out of Quepos during the next couple of months and if you want to target snook, head to the Parrita, Naranjo, Savegre or Baru rivermouths. FLY FISHING REPORT By Mark Evans
T
he Costa Rica dry season has begun with some solid fish being caught by the crew. Mariano Arrea has been on a guapote / aka rainbow bass mission in the Guanacaste region of the country as of late, and has met with great success landing some beautiful fish in good numbers on top water poppers. When Mariano is not chasing guapote he has been known to hook into some healthy machaca as well. Jesse Males, tour guide for 506outdoors has also been landing some nice guapotes on the fly in the San Carlos region. Jesse has also been landing some serious sized machaca in the 2-3 kilo range even with the low water levels. iconic trout when we speak of fly fishing. Jose Gutierrez has found the love for fly fishing recently and landed his first trout on the first cast in the high mountains of Costa Rica. Congrats Jose! ishing in the Tambor area of Sarapiqui, this is a town that is on the banks of the San Juan River. The area borders Costa Rica and Nicaragua. In this location we find a pipe that gives access to some lagoons in the middle of the jungle. In summer the water level is very low, exposing all the ideal structure for the fishing of guapote lagoon. Here there are also other species such as guapote tiger, guabina, gaspar and snorer. We usually catch several specimens using spinnerbaits, crankbaits, minnows and topwater lures. It’s ideal to make use of a small boat or kayak.

DRAKE BAY REPORT By Captain Willy Atencio

reetings from the beautiful and remote waters of Drake Bay, on the Southern Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. January-February fishing has been nothing short of amazing. We have literally been fishing every day for the last two months and have had extremely happy clients. While we have not been catching as many mahi mahi as we did in November and December, the ones we are catching have been averaging 30+ lbs. As the mahi have thinned out a little, the tuna have taken their place. They have arrived in great numbers and much closer to shore than usual. It is not unusual for our clients to catch so many they say “enough�. After a little water, rest and a boat ride, most clients recover enough to catch a roosterfish on the way in. The cubera snapper bite has also been excellent to start the year. As we look forward to March and April we anticipate the Pacific sailfish to migrate here in big numbers. A few years ago, we had one day with 78 sailfish raises and 32 caught and release. While this is an unusually great day it proves these magnificent fish are here in great numbers. Costa Rica remains one of the best places on the planet to catch sailfish in the March/ April timeframe. A
t press time the sailfish bite was extremely good with boats raising fish in double digits. The marlin on the other hand had slowed and even boats running out to the seamounts and Fad’s were having trouble justifying their fuel costs. That should change as we get into March and April and the number of marlins raised should increase quite a bit. Dorado is still a daily occurrence and yellowfin tuna are plentiful.

Roosterfish, jacks, and cubera snappers will jump on a fast moving popper but you may have to soak a live bait to catch a really big fish as they will be a little more skittish in the clear water. March and April have always been good months for deep jiggers working 3 to 600 feet of water with grouper, amberjack, tile fish and an occasional barrelfish on the menu. Our feature angler is Joey Dalsey, a high school senior who just accepted a football scholarship to play for Princeton. A repeat visitor to Costa Rica with his mother Kelly, Joey took his first marlin and hooked this roosterfish on a small spinner off the pier at Crocodile Bay. He had to jump in a boat to keep from getting spooled but successfully landed and released this huge rooster.

Recipe Corner Hey everyone!!! The tuna and mahi bite has been picking up in the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica!! We have been very fortunate to see an abundant amount of meat fish being caught in the past few weeks. That being said, I thought of a simple recipe that may help many novice or experience cooks prepare something so simple yet important.... sushi rice!!! This rice can be used cold as we are used to, but also warm with a seared tuna or fresh mahi over spinach. Or try a poke and cold seaweed salad.
Sushi Rice YOU WILL NEED • 2 cups sushi rice • 3 cups water • 1 cup sushi vinegar • 2 tbsp sugar 1. First, wash the rice 4 times by rinsing and straining until it washes clear 2. Add a little oil to your rice cooker or pot and add the rice. Allow to cook slowly over low heat to make fragrant. 3. Add water and cook rice as normal 4. In another pot mix the vinegar and sugar warm over medium heat dissolve the sugar 5. When the rice is done, pour the mixture over all the rice, cover and-let cool in the refrigerator for at least 20 minutes. Ready to use!!! With rolling sushi, it takes practice and patience it gets easier and more creative every time. When handling the rice, please have wet hands and keep water handy while rolling it. W
ith a claim of being the oldest city in the United States, St. Augustine, Fla. is certainly rich in history. Stroll the streets and you’ll see Spanish colonial architecture, beautiful stretches of sandy beach and ample parklands awaiting exploration. Head out on the water, though, and you’ll also discover tremendous inshore fishing. “Redfish and trout action is really good in our inshore waters during the spring season,” said charter skipper Tommy Derringer of Inshore Adventures (www.Inshoreadventures.net; 904-377-3734). “There’s only a couple of months here when it’s clear enough to sight

fish, so you really want to take advantage of it. The action begins in January and lasts through March and into April. This is shallow water casting up on the flats and back in our numerous feeder creeks. Basically, any creek or flat between the Francis and Mary Usina Bridge and the Palm Valley Bridge is worth a shot.” According to Derringer, reds are easiest to spot on a dropping tide. The water is still pretty cold this time of year, so areas that warm quickly are where you’ll want to start. Look for oyster bars or shells on the bottom as the biggest draws, but if the tide gets really low depressions eventually hold most of the reds. Typically, inshore redfish in this area are “slots” weighing 2 to about 10 pounds. Casting a small soft-plastic minnow or grub with a light jig head is a productive and sporty way to get in on the fun. “You want to use a 2500 size spinning reel with a 7-foot medium-light action rod, 10-pound test braid and a lightweight white or chartreuse lure because fish can be spooky in the shallows,” noted Derringer. “Make long casts so as not to crowd your quarry, and choose a lure that lands with a soft splat rather than a big splash. Live shrimp and minnows work well, too, as long as they are presented gently.” If you can’t isolate reds, Derringer suggested backing out into the main channel of the Intracoastal Waterway and working edges and pockets for sea trout. This bite is best from late March into April as the water warms up. Try a MirrOdine Suspending Twitchbait, a soft plastic paddle-tail, or a live shrimp suspended beneath a float, and you’ll see plenty of action. Most of the trout here measure 16 to 20 inches, but if you pass on these and keep looking you might come across pods of bigger fish with some lunkers in the 5- to 8-pound class. If trailering your own boat, Derringer recommends launching at the Vilano Landing Boat Ramp. You can get bait and lures right across the street at The Bait Shack (904-217-3486). f you’re an angler who enjoys following up a day on mountain trout streams with a refreshing craft beverage or two, cast your attention to the Blue Ridge mountain town of Hendersonville. This North Carolina town, about 22 miles south of Asheville, offers miles of stocked trout waters, as well as the popular Hendersonville Cheers! Trail. The two resources make it possible to spend the day catching three types of trout – rainbow, brown and brook – while spending an evening exploring three types of craft beverages – beer, wine and hard cider. First, the fishing part. North Mills River is the prime trout stream in the Hendersonville area. The river’s 4-mile section of delayed harvest waters receives an annual infusion of 11,000 trout from N.C. Wildlife, divvied between brook, rainbow and brown. Spring is a great time to fly fish the delayed harvest waters of North Mills River because no trout have been harvested since Sept. 30. Another hot spot for trout fishing is just across the Henderson County line toward Brevard. The Davidson River offers miles of public trout waters that receive annual stockings of 16,500 fish. Other lesser-known spots for fishing near Hendersonville include
three streams on the eastern side of Henderson County, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown. Rocky Broad River has a 1.2-mile stretch of hatchery support waters from Rocky River Lane to the Rutherford County line near Chimney Rock, while Cane Creek, near the Fletcher community, has 1.5-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters. For those who really want a unique experience, Little River in DuPont State Recreational Forest provides not only a scenic setting for trout fishing, but also a unique one. Delayed harvest waters flow through undisturbed mountains and over several notable waterfalls. Those waterfalls were immortalized on Hollywood’s silver screen in The Last of the Mohicans, as well as the backdrop for the exploits of Katniss Everdeen in the original Hunger Games movie. When the fishing is done, the Cheers! Trail awaits. The trail is one of North Carolina’s best, featuring 16 craft producers offering a variety of experiences. Beer fans love Sierra Nevada’s tasting room, which is one of the largest on the East Coast and features an expansive patio and outdoor amphitheater, while Bold Rock Hard Cider has emerged as a national leader in the hard cider industry and regularly hosts live music (indoors and outdoors), along with cidery tours and a food truck. Several craft producers on the trail create small-batch beverages prized for their quality and originality. Three breweries – Southern Appalachian, Triskelion and Guidon – are within a few blocks of each other in the Depot District, while Sanctuary Brewing Co. is only a few blocks away on Main Street. Sanctuary is pet-friendly with a commitment to pet rescue. Three wineries produce high-quality wines from European varietals. The newest – Point Lookout Vineyards – is located atop a 3,000-foot mountain with panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards, the area’s first vineyard, is on farmland that’s been in the family for more than nine generations. I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly
at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth. There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point. Second, the fruit just taste
better coming out of your home orchard versus buying fruit from the grocers that have little to no flavors. s past president and current board member of IUSA (the organization that ratifies world records for spearfishing), I get to share the excitement of big fish applications. The entire IUSA board was amazed by a recent submission. We received word that Luis Viyella had speared a 480-pound yellowfin off the Dominican Republic on Dec. 23, 2018. If approved, this fish would not only be the new spearfishing world record, but it would also beat the current IGFA All-Tackle rod-and-reel record! The All-Tackle stands at 427 pounds, held by angler Guy Yocom and caught off Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Viyella supplied the required photos of the fish, the measurements, the weighing, and the certified scale. He provided witnesses and documented the “Story of the Hunt” which was well-written and riveting. Viyella was new to freediving and bluewater hunting but accompanied by an experienced friend. They were targeting wahoo that day when the tunas showed up. He was excited when his buddy speared a 125-pound yellowfin. As requested, Viyella added a second shot to the fish—a common practice to secure the fish and make the extraction quicker and easier. A bigger tuna showed up, but Viyella’s speargun was already discharged and embedded in the 125-pound tuna, so he called out for his new Daryl Wong speargun from the boat. It wasn’t a bluewater gun, and it wasn’t the ideal set up, but he needed to act quickly. Viyella attached a line and float to the reel gun, dove down, and fired a well-placed shot into the tuna. After attaching additional floats, he made headway in raising the tuna toward the surface. His buddy dove down and placed a second shot to the head, helped manage the lines, and kept sharks at bay until it was landed—all the things a good buddy does.
News of this magnificent fish traveled fast. Viyella was told that, if approved, his fish would eclipse the current spearfishing record of 353 pounds. During the application process, he learned the rules the hard way. In order to qualify, one must shoot and land the fish without assistance from others. It was heartbreaking for Viyella and the board, but his catch is still outstanding, and IUSA awarded a meritorious award. Viyella accepted it with grace and gratitude. He said, “Inside the boat, we realized it was a very extraordinary, giant yellowfin tuna. I cannot describe our feelings of gratitude to God, our emotions, joy, sense of achievement, cheers, hugs, screams of happiness. It had been the most amazing day at sea, and the most exciting catch ever, and I had caught, on rod and reel, a 900-pound blue marlin and 600+ pound swordfish before. This bluewater apnea spearfishing catch was a higher dimension, another level of joy and sense of achievement. Glory goes to God for His love and generosity.” Amen to that, Mr. Viyella! May you continue to be blessed with that same sense of wonder and joy, for that is the real treasure of the sea. Anglers Seek To Cement Legacies At 2019 Bassmaster Classic
T
he 2019 Bassmaster Classic, scheduled for March 15-17 on the Tennessee River, will feature the usual mix of established pro fishing superstars and hungry young pros who are destined to be the stars of tomorrow. The 52 anglers converging on Knoxville will be gunning for the largest share of the $1 million prize fund, and they’ll be aiming to establish their angling legacy by winning the most important title in professional fishing. Among the field are eight former Classic winners, including four-time champion Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., and defending champion Jordan Lee of Grant, Ala., who last year became one of only three anglers to claim back-to-back wins in the event. Seven of the pros have hoisted the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of
the Year trophy, including 2018 AOY winner Justin Lucas of Guntersville, Ala., and Aaron Martens of Leeds, Ala., who has claimed the award three times. “The Classic is a showcase for some of the most accomplished bass anglers in the world,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “You’ll have veteran pros out there who’ve experienced the huge stage that is the Classic and excelled in that environment in the past. But you’ll also have some young guys who are just chomping at the bit to make a name for themselves. “That’s one of the most exciting things about the Classic—it literally will change someone’s life forever.” Anglers hungry for first-time Classic glory include Florida’s Drew Benton, Tennessee’s Brandon Lester and Arizona’s Clifford Pirch — just to name a few. Whoever wins the event, the immediate effects will be easy to see. There’s the world-famous Classic trophy, which weighs more than 40 pounds and is easily the most coveted piece of hardware in professional fishing. Then there’s the $300,000 first-place check and the chance to stand before an arena full of screaming fans as confetti cannons set the stage for the accomplishment of a lifetime. This year’s weigh-ins will be held in Thompson-Boling Arena on the campus of the University of Tennessee. As always, the Classic will be held in conjunction with the fan-favorite Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods. Known as the most important consumer show in the bass fishing world, the Classic Expo will be held in the Knoxville Convention Center and the adjacent World’s Fair Exhibition Hall. J
ust looking at a map will tell you the Sea of Cortez is a fish trap. Separated from the Pacific Ocean by Mexico’s nearly 800-mile long Baja California Peninsula, it’s a 62,000 square mile canyon that drops to depths approaching 10,000 feet. The sportfishing out of Cabo San Lucas, on the Peninsula’s southern tip is legendary. It is a bustling destination where marlin, sailfish and tuna abound. But Capt. Jimmy Nelson, host of the TV show Livin’ The Dream, pointed to a quieter destination and some awesome fishing up the Peninsula’s East Cape. Out of the Buena Vista Beach Resort about an hour’s drive north of Cabo, the Sea of Cortez drops to 1,000-foot depths just a few hundred yards off sand beaches. There’s a fleet of sportfishing boats waiting to take anglers offshore to chase all the big pelagics, and the inshore action borders on unbelievable. Even shorebased fishermen can catch some species typically associated with long runs offshore. At a place renowned for billfish, Nelson said the inshore action is as much of a reason to go as the marlin. “You never know what you’re going to get. There’s all kinds of things that will be right there on the edge,” Nelson said. “Roosterfish, African pompano, cubera snapper, Sierra mackerel, even dolphin, wahoo and yellowfin tuna will hit your popper right off the beach.” Never knowing what’s on the end of the line requires anglers to gear up. This is not the same as inshore fishing in the Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic. Nelson said casting 8-inch poppers or live lookdowns from shore is a ton of fun and requires 8000 size spinning reels. A big cubera snapper slamming your popper is a fight you’ll never forget. “It’s a rush,” he said. “You’re catching a bottomfish on top, so they go straight down to the bottom. You have to gear up with some pretty heavy tackle.” Trolling just off the beach is another tactic that puts anglers on a surprising array of the Pacific’s best sportfish. Big roosterfish might be primary target, but again, you never know what will eat when you’re pulling lookdowns and goggle eyes. Big yellowfin tuna have been known to surprise anglers just off the beaches, so 30 wide reels and heavy tackle are required. COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM
