Whatever happened to Sea Cat? By Thatch Maguire
A
bout 20 years ago, I had the opportunity to ride aboard a dual-hull, 21-foot center console called a Sea Cat. Like many others, I’ve been a fan of cats ever since. The ride of a dual-hull vessel, especially in choppy seas, is dramatically different from that of a mono-hull. The stability of a two-hull system creates a cutting effect, as opposed to the bounce associated with the plaining of the mono-hull. Study after study has confirmed this effect affords “cats” substantially better fuel economy as well as a much smoother ride and shallower draft. The “cult” of the dual-hull cat has its origins in Australia, where catamaran-style hulls have long been the choice for Australia’s working fishermen. The consistent chop in their seas requires the stability of a catamaran hull. In the United States, several companies pioneered development of the catamaran-style boats for our waters. In the late 1950s, Ray Leger began producing the Power Cat series on the West Coast and several other companies including Manacat and Ocean Star began producing cats in the East. Years after my ride aboard the Sea Cat, I purchased a 26-foot World Cat. I was told Sea Cat was now World Cat. I visited the North Carolina World Cat factory, where I was told they no longer produced the Sea Cat. Recently, I learned the Sea Cat is still being produced in Greenville, N.C. After a few phone calls, and a little Googling, I found Forrest Munden at Sea Cat Boats. The following interview with Mr. Munden attempts to unravel the mystery of “Whatever happened to Sea Cat?” Q: Mr. Munden, how is it you are today selling a vessel that many thought was no longer on the market? Weren’t you associated with the original Sea Cat I fell in love with? Munden: Yes I was. Sea Cat was originally created by Graham Flanagan in 1992. I was manufacturing Leisure Cat boats with Regal Marine in Orlando, Fla., and Graham was manufacturing Sea Cat boats in Greenville, N.C. The innovations developed on the Sea Cat seemed destined to have substantial influence on the boating industry. The boats were super fuel-efficient and rode smoothly in nearly any conditions.

Q: Well what happened? Munden: In 1996, I purchased Sea Cat boats and its Greenville manufacturing facility. During my first year with the brand, I designed and developed the World Cat line of catamaran boats. World Cat molds were manufactured by Vectorworks Marine in Titusville, Fla. by my good friend Jeff Gray, CEO of Vectorworks. Once we received the new World Cat molds at the plant in Greenville, we started making the World Cat and stopped making the Sea Cat. That was early in 1997. The Sea Cat molds were stored for another year and a half until my good friend Ken Hall (previous CEO of Proline/Donzi) purchased them. He owned the Florida boat company Sportcraft and wanted to add a catamaran line. He called the Sea Cat boat the Sportcat. Unfortunately, Sportcat and Sportcraft did not survive the 1998 economic downturn. The next I heard of Sea Cat was when a former Sea Cat dealer and two brothers from Columbia, S.C. splashed the 19-foot Sea Cat mold. Then, Jerry Semers purchased that mold from the brothers, who had closed their business. Mr. Semers’ started the new venture in Titusville, Fla., utilizing Vector Works Marine as a home base. He called the boat Sea Cat. After Mr. Semers passed away, the molds and tooling sat vacant for years. In 2017, a good friend and ex-Sea Cat and World Cat dealer invited me into a venture to make a new catamaran with the Sea Cat name. I reached out to Mr. Gray at Vectorworks and proceeded to do the tooling and mold building through their team. The result, introduced in 2019, is the new 260 Sea Cat Hybrid bay boat built by our partner Pete Caldwell, Caldwell Marine Designs. The original Seacat Boat built in 1992 was built again 27 years later at the same Greenville plant. Today’s vessel is capable of power up to twin 300 horsepower. Today’s 26-foot Sea Cat has handling characteristics far superior to the original that you fell in love with. I
f you’ve never made your way to Florida’s Forgotten Coast to spend a day in the Gulf of Mexico catching red snapper, you owe it to yourself to have a go at it. The red snapper is likely the most prized catch of anglers here, and for good reasons: they make most excellent table fare, they’re absolutely beautiful, they’re easy to catch most days, and it’s hard to beat snapper fishing for a day of friends and family fun.
To give you an idea about how prolific the red snapper are here, let me share a phrase commonly used by local charter captains fishing for other species of fish: “We had to leave that spot because we couldn’t get our bait past the snapper!” Yes, FWC does tightly manage harvest seasons and bag limits, and it’s frustrating for many, but the fact is, we have a lot of red snapper here! Currently, the Gulf snapper season runs June 11 through July 12. If you plan on bringing your own boat to the area, fear not; plenty of boat ramps and other accommodations will ensure your experience is a good one. Finding snapper can be as easy as using the many public sites available, just plug them into your GPS and go! Rigging for snapper is very easy. I’d suggest a minimum of 30-pound-test mainline, and make your leaders with a quality 50-pound-test fluorocarbon. If using live bait like cigar minnows or Spanish sardines, I suggest you fabricate your leader this way. Attach a swivel to your main line, use 80-pound mono to create a 6-inch leader to slide your egg sinker onto, with another swivel on the other end. Now attach a 5-foot length of fluorocarbon leader with a 3/0 to 5/0 circle hook on the business end. When fishing deep with a conventional Carolina-style rig where the weight slips, you’ll sometimes find that your weight is all the way to the bottom, but your live bait is swimming right under the boat. Securing the weight to the leader rig ensures this doesn’t happen and gets the bait right down to the fish. Guides here are at the ready to take you, your family and friends out for what promises to be an exceptionally good snapper season, but book early, availability can be limited once the season kicks off. Many other species of fish are on the chew here too, folks, so don’t overlook the tarpon, redfish, AJs, king mackerel and so much more that awaits both inshore and offshore. mpoundments created by damming rivers and creeks all have something in common beginning in about June. Fish head out to the ledges, and it’s this summer pattern that brings anglers to the famous offshore ledges on my home lake, Eufaula, as well as on reservoirs around the region. Spawning is about over, and several game species, especially bass, are searching for food, cover and shade. The sharp ledges where the river and creek banks dropped straight down before the lake was formed are the perfect spot for hide and seek. From the headwaters, where the ledges are the shallowest, down to the dams, where ledges are sometimes too deep to be practical, there is a sweet spot that affords the perfect temperature, oxygen and other environmental necessities to maintain life and comfort. The difference in water temperatures at certain depths, generating schedule, current flow speed, lake level and many other factors determine exactly where this sweet spot is on any different day or hour. Those with the most experience on a given reservoir have a distinct advantage, but information pertaining to these criteria is
available at most U.S. Army Corps headquarters offices as well as from the Tennessee Valley Authority. Whoever controls the dams where you fish has the information you need. For Lake Eufaula, call (866) 772-9542 ext. 244. In most cases an app is available for your favorite lake. Ledges are nothing short of structure, and knowing where to look is a very important factor. Critical features support feeding advantages such as the sharpest of the sharp drop-offs, small ditches that intersect with such sudden drops, a rise in adjacent landscape creating a ski-jump effect, points, curvatures, and the list goes on. Some of these features create an updraft where cooler water is forced upward, and likewise, just the opposite only yards away. In all the mentioned areas, shad and other prey are disrupted by the sudden surge in water flow. Today’s electronics, with highdefinition displays showing us where bait and bass congregate, are a huge advantage to finding the sweet spot on the ledges. But a little old-fashioned map work is also key to putting yourself where the fish are likely to be. As always, know“ledge”—pun intended—is the key to success. Careful study of your lake master maps and identifying target returns can produce unbelievable results, not just in June, but all summer long. Its getting hot! Summer is upon us and the boaters are out in full force. I still want to fish but where do I start? There is always a shallow bass bite in the summer, if you know where to look. The bass are schooling, so try to find a place where you see bass schooling. In the very back of some creeks such as Crowders Creek is a place where this event happens from time to time. Topwater baits are a must. I like a chugger or a ploper early and late in the day. This will get you a few bites. Deep humps in main lake will also hold bass. A c-rig or a deep diving crankbait works well. Sometimes fishing deep docks on main lake will catch you a few fish. Another way to catch bass is to fish at night. Docks with a light will hold bass so to beat all the heat, give it a try. You might like it. Crappie fishing is very good during hot months. I start early and shoot docks with brush around them. It very productive. Bridges hold crappie too! I like to use four pound test line on a spincast reel to shoot docks. I make my own jigs but any jig will work. I use my side image to locate the fish. Actually it’s very easy to do this. You might have to ride close to docks and shoot you side image under the dock, but hey, it works quite well. At the end of the day you will have a mess of specks to take home. Catfishing is at its peak, They have finished spawning and are roaming. They are hungry. Lake flats and creeks are a prime place to fish for cats during this time. If you can find some white perch near the mouth of creeks or near flats, that is a bonus. Catfish will be near by feeding. I troll at .5-.6 MPH most of the time using cutbaits. Wear your life jackets! There are lots of boaters on the water. Be safe! Take a kid fishing and you will be glad you did someday.

The Valley of Suches By Captain Craig Price
I
don’t call myself a fly fisherman but I know enough about it to recognize world-class fly fishing when I see it. An idyllic mountain setting, genuine southern hospitality, and BIG trout fits the bill in my book. Bobby and Ann Still operate GA Trophy Trout Fly Fishing in The Valley at Suches, which is adjacent to the Chattahoochee National Forest in Union County, GA. At about 3000 feet elevation, Suches is known as the Valley Above the Clouds. At the turn of the century the Still’s and several friends acquired properties along 2 miles of the Toccoa River in the Suches valley. Bobby had a vision for about a half mile stretch of the river that flows through his parcel. His goal was to turn it into a premier trophy trout fly fishing destination. Still has put many years of planning, hard work, and thoughtful stewardship into his fishing grounds, waters, and the inhabitants. His continuing efforts have resulted in a stunning, highly fish-able setting for cold water fly fishing. These waters support generous numbers of Kamloops strain rainbow, brown, and brook trout from a few inches long too well over 30 inches. Most of these fish spawn naturally in the river. A Valley at Suches guided fishing tour includes all tackle,
bright sun in the afternoon and the wind was calm. Still started us out with emergent patterns that duplicate aquatic insects that emerge from their larval stage on the river bottom than rise to the surface where they become adult flies of various species. Corks serving as strike indicators plus split shot weights were used to facilitate the flies’ drifts in various current and depth. Andy quickly hooked and released a rainbow in the 20” range as Bobby took me upstream to see what I could do. After missing a few strikes, unfortunately a recurring theme for me throughout the day, I caught a feisty 18” rainbow. Then I hooked into a submarine that had me holding my breath as it made numerous runs and laps around the pool until Bobby could net it. It was a 28” rainbow that Still estimated at 12 lbs., easily the biggest trout I’ve ever caught. After calming down from the adrenaline rush, we continued to explore different sections of the river while catching numerous trout from 6 to 20”. After a relaxing homemade lunch, the highlights of the afternoon were Andy’s brown trout well over 20” long, plus the largest brook trout I’ve ever seen, much less caught - easily a 16 incher. In the end, we were completely satisfied with the fishing, setting, and esprit de corps with Bobby. Andy and I agreed we’ll be back there someday, but go see for yourself and get ready to be amazed. After limbering up and donning our wading gear, it was time to hit the river. une in the Blue Ridge Mountains marks the beginning of summer and is a great time to hit the outdoors. Hiking along the Appalachian Trail, tubing a local creek, camping in the National Forest, and fishing the numerous trout and smallmouth streams are just a few of the activities you can enjoy this time of year in the Blue Ridge. Hiking up little Stony Creek in Giles County to Cascades Falls is a must see. If gorgeous views of the scenic, 60’ waterfall aren’t enough, Little Stony offers some excellent special regulation trout waters with native brook and rainbow trout being the main quarry. If the trout aren’t biting, make sure to check out the New River. The New River starts in Boone, NC and flows northwesterly into Virginia and then into West Virginia where it joins with the Gauley to form the Kanawha River. The river

widens and deepens as it flows from North Carolina and into Virginia and has a 14”-22” slot limit on all portions within Virginia. With river wide ledges, deep runs, and a never-ending food supply, the area below Claytor Dam near Radford, VA is best known for its populations of trophy fish. June is an excellent time for both numbers and quality smallmouth on any smallmouth river in the Blue Ridge. Fish are coming off a long spawning season and are hungry and aggressive. We love to use top water baits this time of year with buzz baits, Pop-R’s, and prop baits being a few of our favorites. Concentrate on more aggressive areas and don’t overlook shallow current seams. Really large smallmouth love these areas in the post-spawn because they are normally full of bait and minnows making it an easy feeding location. If top waters aren’t working, we
normally rely on plastics including tubes, worms, and fluke style baits. If you like musky, the June postspawn bite is one of the best of the seasons, particularly around the full or new moons. Musky are aggressive and hungry, and will attack baits with a vengeance if you catch them in the right mood. We like to night fish during this period and if retrieving inline spinners aren’t working, don’t overlook top waters like a Bucher Top Raider or Suik Weagle. he looked so darn good to me. She might not have been the girl of most guy’s dreams, but for me, this girl was everything I was after….until I saw her twin sister. Her sister had my heart pumping too. She was working it. Her swagger was alluring and hypnotizing. I couldn’t wait to get into her bed. She was overweight like me, so I definitely wasn’t going to hold that against her. Like her sister, I guessed she was about six and half to seven pounds, and as you may have guessed, “she” was a bass. She was settled up some buck brush in some skinny water that somehow was a bit clearer than the water on the main lake. I almost went right past her, but her moving shadow drew my eye. There was no discoloration of a bed, but I could tell by her mannerisms, she was there with a purpose. I took several attempts to coax her with a jig, but she wasn’t a player. She turned her head up at a craw, and a beaver style bait. I even worked a topwater from over the bed, but this girl didn’t get that big being indiscriminate in her eating habits. I watched her, fanning in the buck brush (or as some call it, “I’m stuck brush”) for a few minutes as I continued providing options for her to reject, when it dawned on me to try tossing a weightless worm. A wacky-rig in this type of cover is going to hang up on the brush 99% of the time, but the Riot Baits’ Baton is a worm that was designed to provide an enticing death shimmy wacky or Texas-rigged weightless, and it just so happens, I had one tied on. I pitched it directly into the buck brush. It landed flat on the surface of the water. I let the line stay slack and watched it settle on the surface. The Baton immediately started sinking. As it fell, it started undulating unlike any other Senko-style worm on the market today. I watched as my dream girl engulfed the worm and turn. I set the hook, and we had our first argument since we met. She was mad, but she lost the fight just like her sister had moments before. Spring time or during high pressure fronts bass often get finicky, even when they are guarding their beds or fry. It’s during these times that a weightless worm like the Riot Baits’ Baton can produce heavy stringers of bass by enticing these reluctant feeders during the latter part of the spawn, you might not find bass on beds. Instead, bass will suspend on hard structure like docks and laydowns leading out of the main spawning areas. Sometimes, the evidence of fry at the surface can giveaway their location making them an easy target. It’s important that when using any weightless soft stick bait that the worm be allowed to fall on slack line so as not to interfere with the worm’s natural action. Worms like the Yamamoto Senko have a subtle quiver when wacky rigged while newer worms like the Riot Baton are designed to have a pronounced shimy. A
Doing More with Less: Shorten Your Cast for a Better Presentation By Ryan Wilson
lmost every fly angler that I know, grew up with a notion that the big, long cast was the fly fishing ideal. We have visions of sulphurs hatching on a cool mountain stream, while our fly line cuts back and forth flawlessly through the rising fog. Our fly settles neatly in front of a rising trout, some 50 feet away. It’s hard to not get caught up in the artistry of that image. Others of us get caught up in the competition. Even amongst industry professionals, no one wants to be outcast by a fishing buddy. A spectator of the casting pool at a recent fishing industry trade show, would have seen nothing but 8 weights and double hauls. It’s simply human nature to want to go bigger and further than the other guy – and I guess you’ll never impress the ladies with a 15 foot roll cast. However the truth of the matter, is that the trout angler in our region can significantly increase his or her catch rate by taking in most of that line and tightening up the presentation. One of the most common pieces of advice that I give on the water is: Cover a smaller piece of water, better. One of the most common corrections that I make as a guide is: Reel in half of that line. There are several benefits to making shorter casts. First of all, long casts require more false casting. More false casting means more tangles, especially with the weighted nymphing rigs that are so productive in our neck of the woods. More tangles means more frustration and less time fishing. Longer casts are also less accurate, meaning your fly is not getting in front of the fish. A short, accurate cast can be accomplished with little to no false casting and it’s much easier to put your fly where exactly where you want it. A savvy angler will know that presentation is ten times more important than fly selection. Long casts make it significantly more difficult to get a proper drift. The further you cast, the more conflicting currents your line is going to have to navigate. Those conflicting currents create a drag on your fly that takes it out of its natural drift. Additionally, having all of that line out will make getting a solid hook set considerably less likely. While proper line mending can partially alleviate these issues, most anglers just aren’t as skilled at mending line as they think they are. A short, accurate cast will ensure proper fly presentation. A controlled, natural drift will increase takes and successful hook sets. Use the length of your arm and the length of the rod to extend your drift and maintain contact & control. When fishing with an indicator, I like that indicator to be the only thing in contact with the surface. Work a small section of the stream very well and then use your feet to change position. A good strategy is to take a big piece of water and to break it down in to four foot sections. Cover a section fully and then reposition yourself to cover the next section. 8 CHARLOTTE/PIEDMONT

There are certainly times when making a big cast is a useful tool. There’s no doubt that the ability to move 60+ feet of line will make your fishing world bigger and your buddies jealous. n early 2000 that boy I married and myself were traveling for a couples tournament in Greenwood, SC. While visiting a local tackle shop I saw this lure called a Chatterbait. It was a peculiar looking thing. I thought it looked like a swim jig attached to a piece of tin. Curiosity won so we made the purchase. I attached a curly tail grub as the trailer and off we went. At first cast, I liked how far I could throw it. Upon retrieve I was taken aback by the vibration I felt. Upon hookset on a fish, I had a knee jerk reaction and away the fish went. It was a learning curve but I quickly learned to give it a second after the strike, quite like the moments you wait with a topwater bait, and voila, fish in the
boat! Needless to say, the Chatterbait has been a basic necessity in my arsenal ever since. The Chatterbait shines when other moving baits lose their luster. For instance, when a crankbait only gets a sniff or you feel it get blasted and the Bass just aren’t committing, try the Chatterbait. No one says you have to start reeling as soon as it hits the water. You can count it down to different depths. If you are using a 4-6’ diving crankbait count the CB down...one Mississippi, Two Mississippi, three...you get the point. The Chatterbait shines on its own in almost any condition. A Lot of fisherman love the CB under cloudy
conditions and when it’s raining and a spinnerbait isn’t producing. I’ll not argue that the CB works great under these circumstances. Many times during a rain storm I’ll chose the is over a spinner bait. But don’t get caught up in the norm and limit the possibilities of the Chatterbait. It also shines in clear water and on sunny days. A prime example, while I was throwing a frog over grass on a bright clear morning, the fish were just swatting at the frog. I picked up my Chatterbait and started fishing over the grass. Several times when the grass grabbed the bait, a few light twitches and the bait would break loose often creating a reaction strike. In more recent days, I prefer to add a fluke as my trailer. I like to stick with white on white CB’s and flukes or more natural colors. I rig on a Powell 7ft Inferno with 17 lb fluorocarbon line. This does the trick even when fishing over grass. I haven’t found a condition yet where a Chatterbait couldn’t serve the purpose of putting fish in the boat. Now go catch fish.

God Was at His Side: This Warrior Uses Fishing to Help Cure his Wounds By Jake Bussolini
or three years, I have kindled a relationship with Tomasz Joswik, 45 who lives near Lake Wyle NC. When I first met him at the Operation North State fishing outing, he came across as a quiet wounded warrior who spoke very broken English. What grabbed my attention about Tomasz was his desire to learn how to become a better angler and I have taken up that cause to assist him with his goal. Tomasz is not your normal American soldier. He was born in Legnica Poland in 1974. As a youngster he loved to be around the water. He fished in Poland whenever he had an opportunity and as a teen, he spent three summers working as a lifeguard. At the age of nineteen he wasn’t satisfied with the future that Poland offered him and he came to the United States. He had no job, no family and spoke no English, but he was driven to succeed here. He spent his first year here in Brooklyn New York, alone with no friends, but he says, “God was on my side and the people that surrounded me here helped me when I needed that help. These acts of friendship showed me the kindness that was in the hearts of the American people.” He moved to Charlotte one year later armed with the desire to help others as they had helped him adjust to this new country. He joined the Mecklenburg County Sheriff ’s Office. Driven to improve himself, he attended Pfeiffer University and graduated with a BS degree in Criminal Justice, all while teaching himself this new language. He also joined the Navy Reserve and in 2005 he was called up to service. After a short training period at Fort Bliss Texas, he was shipped to Iraq where he participated in the training of local Curds. During one of the training missions, his vehicle hit an IED. In the words of Tomasz, “for the second time, God was at my side, because I came out seriously wounded but better off than many of my fallen brothers.” Tomasz felt that his wounds would end his dream to succeed in the Military and in Law Enforcement. When he returned to the United States, he was stationed at Norfolk Va. for two years receiving treatment for his wounds. He was now motivated more than ever to pursue a career that would assist in protecting his newly adopted country. He enrolled in the American Military University where he received his Masters degree in Homeland Security. His treatments are directed at his fractured back, PTSD and sleep disorders. Tomasz feels that being on the water helps keep him calm and focused and fishing as often as possible provides him that pleasure. Tomasz caught a full string of five bass at this years Operation North State outing and also took first place with his 13 inch crappie. Tomasz has a unique approach to the “catch and release” concept. Driven by his memories when food was often in short supply, he eats whatever he catches believing that a full freezer is much better than an empty stomach. As a veteran myself, I am one of the lucky ones who served during times of peace. I feel unusually thankful to veterans like Tomasz who took up the cause of freedom for a country that owed him nothing. He continues to give back wherever he can. He recently joined the Catawba Riverkeeper organization as a volunteer patrolling an assigned area of Lake Wylie to assist in clean-up or any on-water problems that occur. ishing on Lake Norman this spring has been excellent, and the month of June should produce similar results if the water temp doesn’t rise too fast! Average surface water temps in June range from 80 to 85 degrees. Most Bass & Crappie have successfully spawned and have moved out away from the shallow bedding areas. They do however come into this same shallow water to feed on the small fry and bream. The Bream have spawned and there is an abundance of small fry in and around the shorelines and especially near Rip-Rap. Bass like to eat bream so fishing where you find these small hatchlings should be part of your daily strategy. The Top-Water activity picks up in June especially in early morning and at dusk. I like to use a Whopper Plopper, Zara Spook, Buzz Baits, and small plugs. Bass can be caught as they move just off banks into deeper water with crank baits, jerk baits, swim baits, and spinner baits. Also, live bait works great too. I catch shad and alewives at night in about 10-15 feet of water back in coves and use these on a 1/0 Aberdeen hook or a 1/0 circle hook on a Carolina rig (with small split shot) around docks with 15+ feet of water and catch lots of bass. I also use small 4-5 inch white perch for bait and catch some nice bass. Crappie will also move back into deeper water in creek mouths in late May/early June and hang around drop-offs, points, and any brush or structure such as deep docks as water temps continue to rise during June. Crappie can be had using jigs with variety of colors tipped with small minnows or on bottom type rigs with minnows. White perch will be in the coves in water to thirty feet deep. Most are being caught on live minnows, small spoons, Sabiki rigs and crappie jigs. A small piece of cut bait on Sabiki Rig hooks will enhance the bite. Cat fishing will improve as water temperatures approach eighty degrees. Chicken, fresh cut bream, Shad, Alewives, and white perch are good bait choices for blue cats and Channel cats. These cats will both take live baits and Blue Cats eat lots of freshwater clams/mussels so anywhere you can find these the blue cats will be in the area. Summer is a great time to be out on Lake Norman so grab some fishing rods, your tackle boxes and bags, and go wet some lines. Enjoy your time and take a kid fishing with you!!

argemouth Bass will pull back to deeper structure during the heat of the day. Deeper diving crankbaits are great lures to fish out from points or other structure that transitions from shallow to deeper water. The Strike King XD series crankbaits in 5XD, 6XD, 8XD and the Rapala DT10 series are very good lures for this type of fishing. Early in the morning and late in the evening or on cloudy overcast days don’t forget about the top water bite. Live Target or Spro brand topwater frogs are great over grass. Tuckertown Lake has a lot of grass that can be fished with frog baits or other topwater baits. In areas that do not require a weedless lure try throwing a buzz bait. Crappies will be deep after the spawn. Slow trolling live minnows or jigs in deep water usually catches them during the summer months. Look for underwater structure such as creek channels, underwater humps, or the deeper end of points. A lot of slab crappies are often caught at night during the month of June. Fishing under bridges with the green LED submersible lights is a great way to beat the increasing heat and to catch some nice slabs. Redear sunfish otherwise known as shellcrackers will be going on the beds just before the full moon. Look for bedding fish around grassy areas in shallow water. Simple red worms are probably the best bait for catching these prolific panfish. A small number 6 or number 4 hook below a split shot sinker will do the trick. You can often find them in the very back of coves. You can sometimes smell a strong fishy odor in areas where they are bedding. We are seeing some real nice catfish coming in from all the lakes. The largest ones seem to be coming in from Badin Lake. The tailrace below Tuckertown Dam has been a prime area to catch large catfish. Shad, either live or cut, fished on the bottom is the bait of choice for the larger fish. For the small to mid size fish, dip baits such as Catfish Charlie or Hog Wild brands fished on a “dip bait worm” are catching a lot of them. The dip bait worm is a plastic bait with a treble hook inside. Push the worm down in the dip bait and remove it. Cast the worm out gently so as not to sling the dip bait off and allow it to lay on the bottom. The dip bait leeches out into the water and the scent draws the catfish to the bait. If you have not caught a fish in 30 minutes reel in the worm and reapply the dip bait.

Fish Where Fish Live Tim Barefoot
W
hatever you fish for, be it fresh or saltwater, you know where you should be fishing. But sometimes it can be frightening to cast into the heart of a snag or brushpile where the fish are, knowing you might lose whatever you have tied on. Here’s a simple way to avoid getting hung up. With the following snag-resistant rig, you can present a bait to the fish
where they live instead of trying to lure them out of their hiding place. I’m not saying this tackle is immune to mazes of mangrove roots or treetops, but it greatly reduces the chances of getting hung up. Protect the hook point with a fluorocarbon weed guard, and you can fish more effectively in thick cover. This method works with J hooks, circle hooks and some lures. I’ve been using this technique to make a weedless soft-plastic shrimp, and there are countless other applications. One of my favorite and most effective ways to use this is with a single hook, no weight and a live bait in shallow water. It also works well on a circle hook chin weight under a sliding cork over really rough bottom. Sometimes you have to go in the cover or drift just above it to get the bite. Most gamefish attack from be-
low, so a bait on a sliding cork is the ultimate target while staying out of snags. Here are the steps to snelling a weed guard onto the shank of the hook. I like the stiffness of Seagar 80-pound fluoro for weed guards. Depending on your application, other lines might work fine also. Make sure to choose a hook with an eye that will accept two pieces of the weed guard and the leader you are snelling. 1) Cut about 6 inches of 80-pound fluoro and bend it backward against the curve of the spool. This will mold the shape of your weed guard. 2) Insert both tag ends through the backside of the hook eye, leaving an inch of the doubled 80-pound fluoro on the shank of the hook. 3) Pass a leader line down through the eye of the hook and the center of the tag ends of the 80-pound fluoro. Pull out about 6 or 8 inches. 4) Holding the weed guard securely on the hook shank, make a 5- or 6-loop snell over the 80-pound fluoro, going forward toward the eye of the hook. DO NOT pull down hard on it right away. 5) Keeping the 80-pound fluoro straight on the hook shank, gently roll into place and push forward BEFORE pulling down hard to “cinch” the snell. 6) After everything is pulled up tight, trim the 80-pound fluoro off just behind the barb of the hook. Also, trim the doubled 80-pound fluoro close behind the snell. uffalo aren’t typically thought of as a game fish species. While they are a favorite for bowfishing, many conventional anglers might not even know they exist. Hugh Newman, of Broken Bow, Oklahoma, would likely tell you these slow-moving bottom-feeders are well worth pursuing. He caught the new 66-pound, 3-ounce state record smallmouth buffalo in May, and the fight on 8-pound-test must have been exhilarating. Newman’s tactics might not be the go-to if you choose to target buffalo. They are suckerfish and feed mostly on small bottom-dwelling critters and algae. Typically anglers fishing for buffalo use nightcrawlers, dough baits or cut bait. Newman caught his on a swimbait, while fishing southeast Oklahoma’s Broken Bow Lake. The huge buffalo crushed the existing record of 44 pounds, 2 ounces, which has stood since 2007. IGFA’s All-Tackle World Record for smallmouth buffalo is 82 pounds, 3 ounces. That fish was caught from Athens Lake, Texas in 1993.

rift boats long ago earned their place in big-water trout fishing. With an oarman steering anglers into range of fish as the boat hurtles downriver, they are an extremely efficient way of covering water and catching fish. Drift boats are designed to go one direction: downstream. They track straight, and their light weight makes them agile in avoiding obstacles. They are awesome boats, an icon of the sport, but in many situations there’s a case to be made for the lowly aluminum jonboat in tailwater trout fishing. Perhaps it’s not fair to refer to these vessels as lowly, or even as jonboats. River boats might be a better description of the tricked-out aluminum crafts on rivers these days. They might not have the classic look associated with fly fishing, but equipped correctly there are many advantages to a flat-bottomed aluminum boat.
Mobility: The most obvious advantage is the ability to move quickly upstream or down. Equipped with a conventional or jet outboard, there is no stretch of river the angler can’t reach. This removes the necessity for separate put-in and takeout locations. From a single put-in, miles of river are accessible, and if the fish aren’t biting where you are, just crank the motor and move. Maneuverability: With its squared angles and flat bottom, a jonboat can’t match the straight-line tracking or agility of V-hulled boats on the drift. If left to its own nature, a jonboat would spin down the river. However, equipped with a rowing seat and oarlocks, it does a passable job of imitating the function of a driftboat, and that flat bottom is good in skinny situations. Let’s not forget the aluminum hull, which stands up to a serious beating. A trolling motor at the bow can completely eliminate the need for rowing in many situations. Drifting stern-first downstream, a trolling motor with a remote can do almost anything a pair of oars can. The poor guy who was previously strapped to the oars can now fish and steer from the bow. Stability: Leg braces are required to fly fish from drift boat. They can be equipped on a jonboat, but they’ll likely just be in the way. That wide, flat hull makes a jonboat stable. Even in rough water, it’s possible to stand on the deck and cast, turn around or do jumping jacks if you want. The ability to move around on a deck is a benefit that must be experienced to understand; it makes fishing easier and more comfortable. Obviously, a flat-bottomed, aluminum boat isn’t suitable in all situations. But depending on where you fish, it is definitely worth considering. An added bonus is versatility. That jonboat is also perfect for throwing popping bugs at the lake.

Finding And Fishing Summer Ledges

grew up fishing lakes known for large schools of bass that spend the summer months offshore. When we get into the summer and the water temperature starts hitting 80 degrees, it is a safe bet that fish are going to be on offshore structure like ledges, humps and dropoffs. I start looking on main lake areas, on the lower half of the lake, where most of the good summer ledges are. Using the mapping on my Lowrance electronics, I search for places that top out from 12 to 20 feet and drop down to anywhere from 50-60 feet. Bass will start heading out there when the water gets to 70 degrees, but when it hits 80 they will definitely be out there. They spawn with a water temperature of 62 to 64 degrees, so as the water warms after the spawn they will start heading that way. Some fish stay shallow all year. The ones that move out will definitely be schooled up on the ledges as the temperatures approach 80 degrees. The biggest deal is finding the depth range of the fish. When they first arrive on offshore structure, they like 12 to 17 feet. The longer they’re there, the deeper they’ll move. It could take a week or a month, but they’ll drop down into 18 to 25 feet and
maybe even as deep as 30 feet. To find the depth range of the fish, I will graph and look for the bait and then the fish. Usually I can see the bass on my Raymarine units, but I will often fish around a big school of bait in case the bass are hiding right under the thick bait. If I don’t see bait or bass, I won’t make a cast. Electronics are too good these days to fish places just because there were fish there at some point in the past. I always start with a moving bait, such as a deepdiving crankbait, to see if I can get the fish fired up. The biggest ones in the school will bite a crankbait. I like a Strike King 6XD and 8XD fished on a MHX CB907 cranking rod that I built myself with supplies from Mud Hole. I always put new Mustad hooks on the baits. I prefer #2 KVD Triple Grip trebles. I use 10- to 12-pound Vicious fluorocarbon for the 6XD and 15- to 17-pound on the 8XD. I like a slower 5:4:1 gear ratio reel to help crankbaits dive to their deepest depths. When those fish start grouping up out on the ledges, you can really have a lot of fun. Hundred-fish days are possible, and I get excited just thinking about it. When that water temp gets close to 80, it is time to get out deep and get healthy in a hurry come tournament day.

he big catfish are biting at Watts Bar Lake on the Tennessee River between Knoxville and Chattanooga, Tenn. Fifty-four teams of catfish anglers from 11 states converged May 3-5 to test their catfishing skills during a King Kat Tournament Trail Super Event presented by Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s. Competitors were vying for $16,000 in cash and prizes and an opportunity to qualify for the $120,000 Classic Championship to be held in November on Wheeler Lake at Decatur, Alabama. A good bite on day one resulted in some good fish coming to the scales. The top four teams had more than 100 pounds, as Chris and David Roberson took a commanding lead with 146.56 pounds. They also held the Big Kat lead with a 64.64-pound Tennessee River beast. The next closest team was Michael Jordan and Charlie Parsons with 117.70 pounds.
A big fish produced a come-from-behind win and back-to-back champs on Watts Bar. Mike Mitchell, Jackson Mitchell and Rick Sexton came from fifth place on day one to become repeat champions. Last year’s winners brought a two-day total of 228.82 pounds to the scales to claim the win. Their day-two weight was aided by the second big fish of the tournament at 63.58 pounds, just a pound away from the Big Kat of the tournament. Mike and Jackson, of Rogersville, Ala., and Rick from Helenwood, Tenn. earned $6,000 for first place. They found their fish close to structure in the downtown Loudon area. Mike said the fish were relating to rock and wood structure where they tempted them with cut skipjack. They weighed in five flatheads and five blues for their 10-fish limit during the two-day tournament. The runner-up spot went to Jared Coker, from Corryton, Tenn., and Terohn Heinrich, from Knoxville, Tenn. They moved up from fourth place on day one with a two-day weight of 217.98 pounds to earn a check for $2,600. David and Darlene Hill claimed the third-place spot with 195.16 pounds. The Louisville, Tenn. team earned a check for $2,000. Fourth place went to Chris Robinson, of Locust Grove, Ga., and David Robinson, of McDonough, Ga. They had a two-day total of 194.02 pounds that included the Big Kat of the tournament. The Big Kat was a flathead that weighed 64.64 pounds and gave Chris his new personal best. The team earned $1,100 for placing fourth, $1,100 for Big Kat, and $1,000 for the hotel bonus for staying at a Loudon County hotel. Rounding out the top five and pulling out the comeback of the day was Carl Morris Jr., of Johnstown, Ohio, and Rob Parsons, of Mt. Vernon, Ohio. eff Bonawitz, of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, had already caught several 30 pounders from the Susquehanna River on April 6 and was running low on bait. He selected the biggest bluegill from the bait tank, and the fish that ate it turned out to be a 50-pound, 7-ounce new state record flathead catfish. “I could tell it was big. It kept hanging down deep and when it finally came up to the top, we thought it might be a mermaid,” joked Bonawitz. “I’ve fished the Susquehanna for years, and I’ve never caught anything quite like it.” It took 25 minutes to land the fish on an 8-foot, medium-action spinning rod loaded with 25-pound-test mono. Bonawitz kept the fish alive in an aerated container at his home until the following day. On April 7, the fish was officially weighed, setting a new state record for the species. The previous record, caught in 2006, weighed 48-pound, 6-ounces. There are several organizations that claim larger fish as the world record, but IGFA recognizes a 123-pound flathead caught from Elk City Reservoir in Kansas as the All-Tackle World Record. Upon weighing the fish, Bonawitz with assistance from his nephew, Dylan, 8, released the catfish back to the Susquehanna River. “It was such an amazing fish,” said Bonawitz. “I thought the best thing to do was put it back so that maybe the next guy could catch it. I have a feeling this record may not last very long.”
