Living The T
he origins of Salt Life are pure. With two simple words in a scrawling font, the iconic brand began as a tattoo inked on the backs of a couple of surfing fishermen in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. Four hard-core watermen began grassroots promotion of the design in 2003, selling bumper stickers and T-shirts. During the humble early years, no one foresaw the eventual scope of the worldwide phenomenon they had launched. Salt Life has come to represent everything everyone loves about the ocean. At a glance, the now-familiar logo proudly displays a love of the saltwater lifestyle. Fisherman and diver Jeff Stillwell, who just happens to be president of Salt Life, said he is blessed to be part of the phenomenon. “Whatever attracts you to the water, Salt Life represents that,” he said. “If you happen to love to fish, it means fishing to you. I happen to be an avid diver. It means diving to me. If you’re a surfer, it means surfing. If you just like hanging out on the beach and enjoying a cold beverage, it means that.” No longer just T-shirts and decals, Salt Life has grown to include a huge assortment of gear and apparel. Two concepts accompany all their offerings. The first holds true to the original message, a devotion to the coastal lifestyle and its fashions. The second builds on those roots by coupling fashion with performance in gear and apparel that helps customers better enjoy water-based activities. From high-performance sunglasses, featuring the best Zeiss polarized lenses, to technical clothing for fishing, surfing, diving, paddleboarding and beach-sitting, Salt Life has you covered. Stillwell mentioned Salt Life’s new Fusion Performance Pocket Fishing Shirts as an example of innovative design that will appeal to anglers. It’s got UV30 sun protection and ventilation, and it’s got something else you won’t find on other fishing shirts. “It really came upon me sitting on the back of a boat, fishing a tournament,” Stillwell said. “Every time that reel goes off, you start looking for things. I don’t know why no one has ever done this, but we took one of these high-performance shirts and put pockets on the back of it. When that reel goes off, I don’t have to look for gloves or a pair of pliers. Whatever I need, I’ve got it right there with me. ’Cause once I get in that chair, I’m going to be there for a while.” Only an angler would recognize the need for this kind of design, and it’s this kind of innovation that has made Salt Life a lot more than just a cool logo. Stillwell said they’ve got a line of waterproof gear on the horizon, and he’s excited about the territory expansion of Salt Life Lager. Yep… Salt Life launched an easy-drinking beer to celebrate its 15th anniversary in 2018. “It goes hand-in-hand with our lifestyle,” Stillwell said. “We’re all out there on the water for a great fun-filled day in the sun, and at the end of the day our customer loves to kick back, as do I, with a nice cold beer.” But all the fun, and all the success, comes with responsibility. Without healthy oceans to play in, there would be no Salt Life. The company has joined with conservation organizations like Artificial Reefs International and Roatan Marine Park in protecting and enhancing the resources so that future generations can enjoy living the Salt Life.

Gillz Apparel –
By Anglers For Anglers
G
illz was started by a passionate angler, an angler driven by the need for one thing—performance. It’s evident in the style and quality of the Gillz brand. Started back in 2009, the idea was to design the perfect fishing shirt that would be lightweight, soft, comfortable and protective. This led to the first innovation – Cross Breeze Ventilation, which consisted of mesh panels under the arms and down the sides of the body. This allowed airflow through and under the shirt, making it even cooler and more comfortable. Other innovations followed, like a vented mask with “gills” for ventilation. This radical mask design offered unparalleled cooling and comfort. The technological innovations kept coming, and Gillz introduced CoolCore technology. CoolCore is a redesign of the actual structure of the fabric to make it cooler. Unlike most companies that simply apply a chemical to their fabric, which can wear off after repeated use and washings, CoolCore is a natural, chemical-free way to cool—up to 30 percent cooler than competitors. In addition, Gillz shirts are non-clinging and non-saturating. They wick sweat away from the body and offer UPF+50 sun protection. Gillz is designed for the passionate angler, the recreational fisherman, or anyone who lives an active outdoor lifestyle. The brand has grown from one innovative fishing shirt to a full apparel line. From tees, to high-performance shirts, to hats, to masks, sunglasses and hoodies, Gillz makes gear for every condition. Designs and patterns are constantly being updated, but the focus on performance is always a constant. Gillz considers making the most comfortable fishing shirt in the world an ongoing process, so innovation will always be of paramount importance. Gillz has come a long way from just making a simple fishing shirt. For more information, visit gillz-gear.com.

Center sp A Badge of Honor
O
ld Guys Rule was created to embrace a new breed of guys who have incredible energy, passion for life, wisdom gained from years of experience and the time to spend doing the activities they enjoy. Old Guys Rule gear should be worn as a badge of honor for a life well-spent, but not nearly over. Let’s face it, in today’s society if you’re over 40, you’re considered old. Old Guys Rule makes the statement: “So what?” We’re still having fun, still doing what we enjoy and, oh by the way, we’re in control. Don’t let the rest of the world try to tell you anything different. Old guys rule! Founder Don Craig brought the Old Guys Rule concept to the California surfing community in 2003. Its popularity quickly spread to include numerous genres and recreational pursuits. Now anglers can make their statement as well through a series of nine angler-themed shirts including bass, mahi, tuna and marlin. No matter where or how you fish, let the world know “You Rule.” For more information on Old Guys Rule offerings, visit http://oldguysrule.fishing or call 866-465-9640.

Fish Stocking for Trophy Bass By Greg Grimes
G
rowing fingerling bass into 8-pound trophies in three years is not only possible, it is probable with Aquatic Environmental’s (AES) secret formula. It all begins with a great plan. We start with lake design that includes superior water quality and well-thought-out fish habitat. We set up fish feeders and/or a lime and fertilization program. We then utilize our proven stocking formula that includes proper ratios of forage species to exceed client goals of accelerated and sustained bass growth. Generally, a traditional 10:1 ratio stocking is not adequate for superior growth and long-term forage for bass. That design quickly gets bass-crowded with limited forage available to over-abundant bass. AES has proven greater success with a ratio that is closer to 40:1. We begin by stocking the forage base of high densities of bluegill and redear sunfish. Fathead minnows are a huge boost for the initial stocking and take pressure off bluegill predation. We also stock
Lake Construction
golden shiners and crawfish for additional forage. A key species in larger lakes is threadfin shad. They really build up some biomass in a fertile lake. Once forage is established, low densities of bass fingerlings are introduced. In the following years, the addition of rainbow trout in the winter months will keep pushing bass weight limits. If double-digit bass weights are the ultimate goal, the addition of gizzard shad in year three will seal the deal. This larger prey species is key for large bass to maximize energy efficiency. Genetics is another factor. Three options are northern, Florida and F1 largemouth bass. Northerns are aggressive but top-out around 8 pounds. Florida bass reach true giant status, but they are harder to catch and cannot tolerate severe cold. F1 bass are a mix of the two and are outstanding in many ponds. We help clients decide their goals but may mix F1 and Floridas for abundant double-digit bass and increased chances of 15-plus-pound trophies. In an existing lake, the first step is a professional electroshock survey. Pending the results, there are several management steps to take. You will want to add forage unless your bass are growing beyond expectations, which is rare. We prefer bluegill stocking if middle-size bluegill populations are low. Secondly, threadfin should be stocked if they have not yet been established. If results show lots of big bass, it is time to stock gizzard shad. The most cost-effective plan for a high-protein food source is the addition of crawfish. Adding rainbow trout that are half the length of most bass will also really boost bass growth. In the hot summer months add in goldfish as a slow, plump, easy-to-eat bass meal. We are firm believers in the saying “plan your work, then work your plan.” Growing lots of giant bass requires a great plan, and if you stick to it the results will follow. Don’t waste time or money adding random fish to your pond. Utilizing the latest research will maximize dollars and results. Best Baits For Spring Bassin’ W By Jay Striker hat do a frog, a dog and a Red Eye Shad have in common? They are all made for spring fishing. One of the things I enjoy most about early spring is knowing the potential exists to catch a huge bag of fish. However, early spring can humble some of the very best anglers. Why? Because springtime fishing can sometimes have you committing to false positives. I’ll explain a bit later. Using the baits that will get you a limit quicker is one key to success. The baits I use in the springtime are tried-and-true lures. If I could only take three baits in the spring, they would be a Strike King Red Eye Shad lipless crankbait, a Strike King Top Water Sexy Dawg and a Strike King KVD Sexy Frog. There will be times when locating fish will take a lot of time. When there’s a need to cover a lot of water, a Strike King gold and black Red Eye Shad is the ticket. The Southeast’s clear, deep lakes require long
casts because the fish can be easily spooked. A lipless crankbait allows for that. More importantly, it is very efficient in covering water. I like using a lipless crankbait around grass bottom areas where I can rip it from the top and then let it flutter back down. Fish tend to hit it on the fall shortly after tearing it out of the grass. Another spring staple is the KVD Sexy
Dawg Topwater bait. This bait also covers a lot of water and is great for targeting fish that show themselves by feeding on top early in the morning. The key to this bait is to keep it moving even if fish blow up on it and miss it. Many times you need to fish every level of the water column before leaving an area. If you catch a fish and don’t explore the rest of the water column, you might end up with a false positive. Just because you catch one fish doesn’t mean you’ve found a pattern that can be counted on. Delve a little deeper, and you might discover you’ve overlooked the predominant pattern because you thought you had something figured out. Frogs are another bait that tend to produce this time of year. I throw a Strike King Sexy Frog around cover, where there is brush hanging over the water and around rocks, docks or just a big open grass mat. There is just something about a frog a bass cannot stand. Spring offers the opportunity for some of the biggest bass of the year. elcome to the challenge of spring fishing. I know a lot of people struggle to consistently pattern fish in the month of March, so I have put together a few key points that should help out. Although the days may warm up considerably, the
CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 2
water can still stay chilly. The continuation of passing fronts can drop the water temperature quite quickly as it struggles to climb up the thermometer, keeping fish less aggressive. In March, I still hold onto some of the same structure I key on in the coldest months. Although I may start to mix in more shell and grass into my target areas, one thing that needs to remain from the cold weather handbook is quick and easy access to deeper water. With frequent cold fronts, although they may not have the same punch, the fish will still look to retreat to more stable water temps in the depths of a general area. The warmer and sunnier the day, the farther the fish will stray from that deep-water access, but they will not completely abandon its safety. I like to focus on the outer edge of the guts that lead from deeper water to the flats early, and I’ll follow them up on the flat as the day warms. With the fronts comes dreaded high pressure! Here are a couple tactics I rely on in this situation. First, and typically the most productive, is to downsize your lure. This is especially true in the spring when forage is young. I also like to go with a natural or translucent color patterns for a more natural approach. I tend to slow down and work lures closer to the bottom, as well, when the barometer is on the rise. My next approach, when nothing is working in a high barometer setting, is to do something completely opposite of what I just recommended. When all else fails, I tie on a very noisy lure that creates a lot of water displacement. This could be a noisy topwater, a noisy rattling lure or a lipped crankbait-style plug. At this stage, I am just looking for a reaction bite. If I can aggravate them enough, they just might take the bait. Although these techniques are polar opposites, I find the fish to be on one end of the spectrum or the other when dealing with high pressure. You just need to experiment and figure them out. Get out and enjoy the weather, and remember to take a kid fishing! Capt. Michael Okruhlik is the inventor of Controlled Descent Lures and the owner of www.MyCoastOutdoors.com.

March (Smallmouth) Madness By Britt Stoudenmire
W
hile the term “March Madness” is reserved for the NCAA basketball tournament, many years ago I heard my good friend Barry Loupe from Saltville, VA apply it to March river smallmouth fishing. When examining the term ‘madness’ further, I found that it could mean insanity or psychosis; both terms that my clients and I have experienced in some way, shape, or form when early-spring fishing on the New River for big smallmouth. Insanity My clients and I have often joked that you would have to be insane to be out on a cold river with the wind blowing 30-mph and temps hovering around the freezing mark looking for a hungry fish. Looking back at the past 15-years, this point could not be better exemplified than one dreary early-spring day while fishing with good clients and friends Jon M. and Will B. from Pa. Temps were at, or slightly below freezing, winds were howling, and the fish were not cooperating. This particular section of the river that we were fishing was near a road and cars were continuously honking their horns at us as they passed by. We knew the passerby’s thought we were absolutely insane to be out on the river this day. And then to add insult to injury, stinging ice began to pelt us. We felt pretty defeated and then, it began to happen. Smallmouth began biting at a rapid pace, and not just any ‘ole smallmouth, they were big smallmouth. They were eating a jerkbait like nothing we had ever seen and the harder the ice pelted us, the harder we jerked, and the harder the fish bit. When the ice would slow down, the bite would linger. When the ice started falling again, the frenzy would ensue. When we finally reached the end of our float, we were cold and felt beaten by the weather but we were ecstatic about the quality of fish that we had caught in such tough conditions. Jon told me later that on the way home, Will said that he felt they had given me and the smallmouth everything they had that day (and he had a swollen wrist from all the jerking to prove it!) It was a rewarding day and that compliment meant an awful lot to
me at the time, and still does. Psychosis When I think of the word psychosis, I think of obsession. And I’m not advocating becoming obsessed over these big, pre-spawn smallmouth, but it can happen. In the early years of my guiding, I was absolutely obsessed with hunting big smallmouth. I would eat, sleep, and drink it every single day. While I still love to put big smallmouth in the boat, I like to think that I have grown as a person (and a guide) in that regard. Make no mistake, when we step into my boat in March and April, it is all business. My clients understand and have come to expect that and we have a great time together on the hunt. I’ve been very blessed over the years to catch a lot of big smallmouth. Before last year, when I wasn’t able to personally fish as much in the spring due to all the rain and resulting high water levels, I had caught a 5-lb or larger smallmouth on the New River 13 out of 14 years. I used to fish a heck of lot more in the early years for that 5-lber but as our family and business has grown, my personal fishing time has adjusted accordingly. A great example is 2017 when we had a strong March bite going. We were on a great run when a high water event knocked us off the water a couple of days for guide trips. We were forced to cancel some days but I always have some clients that are willing to gamble and go on a day’s notice if I have that feeling something “big” is about to happen. After a phone call on Sunday, my client traveled up from Richmond to meet me Monday morning. The river was high and swollen and we caught nice fish the entire day, finishing up with 4 Virginia citations (20”+). But, the monster fish eluded us. I knew the timing was close and that tomorrow could very well
be that “magic” day. The odd thing was that at 4pm that day, my wife Leigh asked me if I was going fishing. I had enjoyed being home and around the family so much that I barely made it to river to get a few hours of fishing in. On my first or second cast, I rolled up one of the biggest and prettiest smallmouths I have ever seen, a fish I was fishing for specifically. She got the best of me at the boat and as I sat there contemplating defeat, I knew there was no way I’d hook another fish of that size class this day. I moved to the other side of the river and caught a healthy 21” 4lb/8oz fish. Then, I made a move to a spot I don’t fish that often. As I was sliding out of the bottom end of the spot, I got that fateful tick. After reeling down and setting the hook, I was fortunate to wrestle in a 21.75” smallmouth that weighed in at 5lb 14oz. Once I got a quick picture and released the fish, I sat there for a moment reflecting on the three fish I had hooked in an hour period realizing how great the New River can be in the spring, how blessed I have been over all these years to fish its wonderful bounty, and how much I enjoy the hunt.

Lake Norman Hybrid Striped Bass Update By Captain Craig Price
n 2017 Lake Norman received its fift h batch of hybrid striped bass via an annual stocking program started by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) in 2013. In case you are not familiar with hybrid stripers, the fish come from breeding striped bass with white bass at government-operated hatcheries. The species has proven it’s better suited than stripers to handle hot water and poor dissolved oxygen levels found in southeastern lakes during summer months. This capability is why hybrids were chosen to replace striped bass in LKN, where the water warms naturally in summer to over 90F degrees, plus two power plants discharge hot water into the mix daily. Add in periods of low flow, typically in mid-summer, and you’ve got a deadly scenario for true stripers. Lake Norman experienced a number of well-documented and significant striper die-offs this century. Beginning in December 2015, the NCWRC, with the help of many volunteers, initiated a tagging-recapture program for Lake Norman’s hybrids. The data from these efforts is used to better understand the viability and distribution of the new hybrid population and to help determine future stocking rates. The quantity of hybrids delivered to Lake Norman over the last five years is 162,500 each year from 2013-2015; 265,000 in 2016; and 307,000 in 2017. The 162,500 number is a volume that’s been used for LKN striper stockings for many years, equating roughly to five fish per acre. From more than a million hybrids stocked as of July 2017, 732 hybrids have been tagged and released in Lake Norman as of Sept. 2017. Of those, 314 fish (42.9 percent) have already been recaptured, which the biologists say is a high value for most tagging programs. Of the reported recaptures, 140 hybrids have been caught by bank anglers, and 174 fish were taken by fishermen in boats. Of the recaptured fish, 92 percent of those caught by bank anglers were kept, presumably for consumption, and 58.3 percent were kept by boat fishermen. The balance of each were released again after removal of the tags. As for how the fish are distributed across the lake, data shows that the most taggings and recaptures so far have come in the river section of the lake, defined in the study as upstream of the U.S. 70 bridge to Lookout Shoals Dam. This activity is heavily skewed to spring months. The second-most taggings have come in fall and winter in the upper section of the lake from the N.C. 150 bridge to the U.S. 70 bridge. The third-most recaptured fish have come from the mid-lake section, from Marker 10 to the N.C. 150 bridge in winter. The lower lake section from Cowans Ford Dam to Marker 8 shows by far the least tagging or recapture activity. The biologists say they have not yet calculated harvest rates for the entire hybrid population, but I think I can deduce a few unscientific conclusions from the data and my time on the water. First, the hybrids are getting caught and taken out of the lake at a far faster rate than the original stocking level supports. Increased stockings the last two years have produced a noticeable population increase, but most of those fish are below or just at BLH status (Barely Legal Hybrids, i.e. 16 inches or more). I don’t think we’ll see the true impact of catch and keep on the last two year classes until those fish get a little bigger. Second, the hybrids are very well in tune with current, which on Lake Norman means the power plant discharge canals and the river section. Flows from both are intermittent, but the fish really push up into the current when the water is moving. Thirdly, to date all stockings have taken place on the upper end of the lake. Hybrids are being caught on the far south and east reaches of the lake, but the NCWRC’s data shows the spread of the population isn’t happening very quickly. It seems that stockings in the middle and lower lake sections would greatly speed that process. Unfortunately, production capacity at the hatchery is a limiting factor that may prevent much higher stocking rates in the future. But the number of hybrids certainly seems to be increasing. Now we just need for them to stick around in the lake long enough to grow to substantially bigger sizes. Then we can have some quality Fish On! experiences again.

Crappie Fishing By Captain Chris Foster
C
rappie fishing in the Spring and Summer months in the Piedmont lakes of North Carolina can prove to be some very rewarding ventures to say the least; but what about the Winter months when the Crappies seem to “disappear” except for those few Anglers that seem to just know where they are and how to entice them to bite. I’m going to let you in on a little secret, with patience and perseverance while employing a few of the following tactics, you too can be returning to the docks with a cooler full of winter-time Slabs! As the water temperatures continue to drop during the months of December, January, and February all those places where you were able to locate the Crappies just weeks earlier seem to be as if there were never any fish there at all! So where did they go?! To deeper water would be the first place to look; even though deeper water in the winter is still cold by our standards, to the Crappies it is the warmest water they can find. This means in their world; the water is warm, and they are more susceptible to feed there. Now that we have located the Crappies on a river channel running the length of the lake or around deep drop offs, how do we go about catching them. Over the years Capt. Butch Foster of Yeah Right Charters and I have employed various methods to keep the fish coming into the boat during these months on lakes such as High Rock and Badin; time and time again the trick that we find to getting these fish to bite in colder water is to fish slow and methodical. First, we look for structure along the deeper drop offs and along the River Channel, brush piles and stumps that many others would simply overlook due to their size or depth. After locating the structure that we want to fish, next we position the boat so that we can stay right over the brush-pile and employ a 1/16oz weed-less jig-head with a jig body of choice. The red body and chartreuse tail or a black body and chartreuse tail 1” tube jig have always produced us with plenty of action. Another tip that will really
make a difference in your catch at the end of the day is to simply tip your jigs with a scent; Pro-Cure Bait Scent “Crappie and Panfish Super Gel” is some of the best attractant you will ever put on your artificial crappie baits. Fish the jig slow and as you bounce off of a brush pile limb, be sure to drop your jig back, many times this will entice a bite! Work the structure good, slowly inching your way around the pieces holding the fish and after exhausting the bite at that location move on to the next. At the end of the day putting these methods to work will have your arm sore from setting the hook and Crappies in the fish-box ready to be prepared for a great dinner! Capt. Butch & Capt. Chris Foster Yeah Right Charters (910) 845-2004

The Science Line: ThBye Jake Wonderful World of Sound Bussolini
or us old timers ( At 83 I think I can define myself that way.) who learned how to fish from our Fathers along a quiet river bank on a misty Saturday morning, making any kind of noise was forbidden. Quiet was the law and there was no thought of breaking that law. Even when fishing from a boat, my Dad always insisted that silence was golden and for us that was the real golden rule. But that was back when we lived with party lines on our phone system and gasoline was 20 cents a gallon. We never dreamed that changes would come along that would require us to write new rules in life that would change some of the most basic beliefs that we grew up with. Well here we are now being asked to believe that creating noise while fishing is the latest new discovery that will revolutionize the sport of fishing. Prior to 1970, most underwater sound research was conducted by the US Navy to support its research on developing more effective Sonar technology. As new and better hydrophone equipment evolved, many private agencies and Universities Started developing their own research programs involving underwater sound transmission. For the most part, these studies centered around determining the methods by which underwater life communicates with and between each other. There was little interest from anglers toward using the results of these studies in their daily fishing activities. It has been widely known that water life such as Dolphins have their own unique methods of communicating with each other with some advocates believing that they have developed a method of communicating with humans. Also now moving from rumor to fact is knowledge that many fish such as fresh water Drum make recognizable sounds that are easily heard without the use of special equipment. Experienced anglers also regularly hear Catfish making groaning sounds when taken out of the water. Are these and other fish trying to communicate with their captors or are they attempting to warn other members of their species of pending danger? Whatever the motives, there is little doubt that fish and other underwater life do make sounds. We may not be sure if these sounds are a method of communication between fish or simply a part of their system that causes periodic transmittal of simple sounds like moans or groans. Studies have shown that some species of fish make recognizable sounds when attempting to attract a mate during spawning periods. Other studies have proven that that fish sounds are louder and more pronounced when the fish appear to be stressed or panicked. Many fish species emit loud sounds when swimming in large schools attempting to feed or when these schools are attacked by other predator fish. With the evidence mounting that fish behavior is and can be altered by the use of sound, the real question relates to which are the good sounds and which sounds are the bad ones. What are the sounds that anglers can use to attract the fish to their fishing locations and what sounds will scare the fish away? For many years anglers have known that although fish have no ears as we know them, they have a very sensitive system that picks up noise from fairly long distances. Scientists know that sound travels four times faster in water than in open air. The system that picks up and processes sound in a fish is called the Lateral Line System, made up of several elements in the body of the fish. In its simplest form it is illustrated in the diagram below.
Working together with tiny hair like nerves located along the side of the body and using elements of their swim bladder, fish can detect sound at great distances. BUT, are all sounds bad sounds? If you drop your coffee mug on to the bottom of your boat, that is a bad sound and will certainly send a nearby fish scampering away, but what if you gently tap on the bottom of your boat with a wooden stick, it has been proven that a steady sound like that is actually a good sound that may attract the attention of a fish. A few years ago, I was asked by its inventor to test what is now known as a Hydrowave. This electronic unit costing nearly $400 emits sounds into the water representing noises made by schooling bait fish in different states of excitement. Testing the unit for more than a year, I verified that the unit did indeed increase my catch rate by as much as two to one. I recently saw an advertisement for a “First Call unit which, much like the Hydrowave emitted sounds of panicking bait fish. This unit sells for about $100. There are other gadgets on the market that sell for as little as $20, all with the same theory, that certain sounds, if repeated regularly, will draw the attention of nearby bait fish and predator fish. Experiments have been done with humming, tapping and chattering noises, all producing positive results, appearing to draw the attention of nearby fish. Most of these experiments, like the existing available units seem to work best drawing the fish up from deeper water between 30 and 50 feet deep. The question that intrigues me is which noises attract fish and which ones frighten them. I have developed my own plan to answer this question. I have developed a design of a noise making unit that I will attach to my pontoon boat. The hollow metal pontoon will serve as a metal amplifier of a tapping sound. I will keep detailed records of my catch rates with this unit operating and non-operating and I will certainly report the results back in a future article for the enjoyment of my readers.

North Carolina Firearms Laws Home, Workplace, Motor Vehicle Property Protection By Karen Fisher
teach a lot of North Carolina Concealed Carry classes, and the more classes I teach the more people I meet who are new to our great state. It just so happens that many, if not the majority, of my new students come from states that are not so gun-friendly. I thought I would share some of North Carolina’s personal protection laws that always seem to surprise students. Disclaimer: It is illegal for anyone in the state of North Carolina to conceal a handgun without a proper state-issued permit. The state of North Carolina honors other States’ concealed carry permits, but it is important to understand our State’s laws prior to concealing a handgun. You may refer to www.ncdoj.gov to determine which states have reciprocity with North Carolina. Home, workplace, and motor vehicle protection (NC § 14-51.2). This statute allows for the State’s presumption that an occupant of a home, motor vehicle, or workplace holds a reasonable fear of death or great bodily harm if any person(s) is unlawfully and forcefully entering or has unlawfully and forcibly entered your home, motor vehicle, or workplace. A citizen of the state of North Carolina does not have the duty to retreat prior to using deadly force against a deadly threat. What is home? Your residence, someone else’s residence, a motor home, an apartment, a hotel, a tent, a tree house, a cardboard box. Home is where you hang your hat. Also – a note about home defense; it doesn’t always mean only inside the home. Curtilage could possibly be taken into consideration when defending yourself at home. This means porches, patios, decks, garages, etc. If those areas are where you spend time living or working, you may still protect yourself against a deadly threat. Motor vehicle? Think car jackings. You are not required to submit to a car jacker. Of special note – placement of your firearm is important

in situations like these. (The safest place for your firearm is on your person). Be careful to consider and plan when it comes to protecting yourself against someone intruding on you within your vehicle. Workplace violence is increasing. In North Carolina, the law allows you to protect yourself and others against a deadly threat at your workplace just as it does at your home. (Be sure to check your employee manual for policies about concealing a handgun at your workplace). You are not required to hold a concealed carry permit to protect yourself in North Carolina, but it would be smart to search out an instructor in your area that can help you understand the laws that provide you with the right to protect yourself and your family.

A SpotByfor Everyone Tyler Rose
O
ver the past several years, bass anglers on Lake Hickory have noticed an increasing presence of spotted bass throughout the lake. Spotted bass are often more common than largemouth in Lake Norman, and while it too is a reservoir of the Catawba River, Norman is downstream in relation to Lake Hickory. This rules out the possibility of spotted bass washing into the lake, bringing us to the conclusion that somebody must have introduced the spotted bass to Lake Hickory. The vague origins of Lake Hickory’s spots raises several questions regarding the future of the fishery and the impact of man upon an ecosystem. When spotted bass were introduced to Lake Norman from South Carolina river systems in the 1990’s, it did not take long for the fishery to undergo a drastic change. While the abundance of spots on Lake Norman make it relatively easy to fish, finding fish of quality can be a different task entirely. Personally, I have a love hate relationship with Lake Norman. Some of the most exciting days of bass fishing I can recall involve feeding angry three pound and up spotted bass (and largemouths) a spinnerbait or jig. Some of my most frustrating days on the water are a direct result of Lake Norman’s plethora of skinny, thirteen inch fish that do not provide much help on tournament day. My complicated relationship status with Lake Norman resulted in some concern when I first started catching spotted bass in Lake Hickory around 2012. So far I have been pleasantly surprised, as most of the spots I have seen in Lake Hickory have been quality two pound and above fish. In more recent years I have caught young twelve inch and under spots that prove there is a breeding population in the lake, but even these short fish are thick and healthy in relation to their Lake Norman counterparts. Deep brush piles and rocky banks provide the best opportunity to run into a Lake Hickory spotted bass, but do not be surprised when one crushes your topwater bait at your favorite
main lake point. It seems as if Lake Hickory has all the makings of a healthy spotted bass fishery, with some anglers seeing the four and five pound spots as a sign that Hickory has the potential to grow a state record fish. Transporting fish between bodies of water is not advised and in many cases illegal due to the potential spread of parasites and diseases. Despite these risks, somebody envisioned a Lake Hickory with a healthy spotted bass fishery, and so far they have gotten what they wanted. I for one intend on fishing Lake Hickory extensively in the coming years to see the effect that the spotted bass has on my home lake.

t’s too expensive.” “I’ve been fishing for twenty years.” “My buddy really knows what he’s doing – he’s got, like, all the gear.” “I don’t need a guide.” There are plenty of excuses you can use to talk yourself out of booking a guided fly fishing trip, but if you’d really like to step up your game and build your skill set, you’re short changing yourself by trying to go it alone. While a guided day comes with a price tag, so does everything in fly fishing – and that money spent on a guided day will almost certainly have a more efficient payoff than any particular piece of gear or gadget. An experienced guide will not only put together an excellent day on the water, he or she will help equip you with the tools and knowledge to improve your skill set. Regardless of your experience level, you can and will learn something new every time you fish with a professional. For anglers who are just starting out, it’s essential to fish with someone who knows what they’re doing and can help cut through some of the more frustrating parts of trial and error. However, even experienced anglers can benefit from a second set of eyes and some local expertise. That’s one reason why so many guides choose to hire one, when traveling outside of their home region. Now that you’re sold on booking a trip, you
need to think about how to get the most out of your experience. You should set some expectations for yourself and communicate with your guide ahead of time. What do you want to get out of the day? Do you want to focus on a particular skill or technique? Do you want to learn the basics or improve in a specific area? Do you want to fish a river or section that you’ve never seen before? Do you want to target bigger fish or are you more interested in numbers? Do you not really care about either and just want to focus on the scenery and relative solitude? If you communicate your preferences ahead of time, your guide will know how best to plan your day. You should also be up front with your guide about your experience level and any physical limitations that might come into play. Your guide wants to make this the best trip possible and will plan the day according to the information you provide. You and your guide should cover logistics, gear needs, lunch preferences, weather considerations and payment. In case you’re wondering, yes you do need to tip your guide. It’s important to have all of the questions squared away before the trip, so that you guys can focus on the fishing! A good guide will help you manage expectations. He or she should have a good working knowledge of the water and should have
an idea of how the day will flow. However, it is fishing and crazy things can happen. Your guide should have a solid backup plan for when things aren’t falling into place. You’ll get the most out the day by letting the guide take charge and trusting his or her expertise. However, remember that this is your trip and you’re paying for a service. If your guide isn’t meeting an expectation, it’s completely acceptable to verbalize that, so it can be corrected. When you spend your day with a guide, you are investing in your fly fishing skill set. If you follow up on what you learn, that day will pay dividends throughout your fishing career. You should also have a great day of fishing with an interesting person. Fly fishing is one of those things that no one can ever really learn completely. Frankly, if there was nothing left to surprise or challenge us, there really would be no point in the venture. Spring is here and the fishing is good, so it’s time to stop making excuses and instead make the most out of the season with a guided fly fishing trip.

hen you refer to something as ‘the bee’s knees’, it means that it is of excellent or very high quality. It’s an ironically perfect fit for Brian’s Bees Crankbaits... Brian Huskins is a local artisan. He has made a name for himself creating spectacular pieces of art. The kind of art I love...the kind that catches fish. Brian, who lives just outside of Charlotte, is a lifelong fisherman. He is a force to be reckoned with in any local tournament. In the 80’s Brian dabbled in making his own Jigs, Spinner baits, and painting crankbaits to suit his fishing needs. Eventually he tried his hand at building his own crankbait instead of just painting others. He made it from Balsa wood and hand painted it himself. (Brian keeps this “first” crankbait as a keepsake tucked away in a drawer in his workshop. This bait was the grandfather for his Mighty Bee Series.) It was apparent early on the Brian had a knack for making unique crankbaits, and soon, word traveled about his baits and their ability to catch fish. A few close friends commissioned him to make custom baits for them. One of those friends was local fisherman, John Ladd. John was so impressed with Brian’s lures, he encouraged him to try to “market” them. After some thought, Brian did just that. Unknowingly at the time, Brian was craft ing custom crankbaits for some of the industries top professional anglers. Though sponsored by some of the biggest companies in the fishing industry, professional fisherman were secretly using Brian’s baits. His baits were placing well in tournaments far beyond the Carolinas. Things really changed for Brian when word about his topwater prop bait, the Prop Bee, spread throughout the fishing
community. The Pros and weekend warriors alike, really started paying attention when this bait featured on a Bassmasters television show Brian’s baits have amassed more than their share of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishes among the best anglers in the country. As the secret got out, Brian’s baits became a staple in many tackle boxes. What sets Brian’s crankbaits apart? Mostly the craftsmanship that goes in to each bait. His original crankbaits are made with Balsa wood. I watched as Brian assembled each bait by hand, from start to finish. A tedious job but he seems to take great pride in each and every bait. As he pitched one in to the “reject” pile, I picked it up and couldn’t find the flaw. It’s that pride and attention to detail that sets his crankbaits apart. The action the wooden baits have in the water is unsurpassable. All of his baits have a wire that connects the hooks to the eye tie and runs completely through the bait. This is extremely important and eliminates the concern of lost fish due to bait malfunction. Most crankbait bills are attached last. In the process of making his baits, Brian essentially builds his bait around the bill which almost eliminates the chance of breaking. All of the lures are hand sanded and painted with such detail that make the bait look like a real deal meal to the most finicky fish. Just like assembly, Brian paints each bait by hand. Mixing and using colors that mimic baitfish. To add to the authenticity, Brian signs every bait on its right side to insure it has personally been built by him. Recently, Brian has added a companion company called Bloody Thumb Lures. Brian is super excited about this plastic line of crankbaits and swimbaits. He has meticulously designed and tested these baits to meet his high quality standards. In addition, through Bloody Thumb Lures, he offers a serious skipping and pitching jig. My favorite feature of the jigs is the application of the paint that The bait that started it all prevents chipping. After a hard day of fishing you can actually see teeth marks on the jighead but the paint is not compromised. Whether you’re a seasoned angler, or new to the game, it would be a tragedy if you missed out on having Brian’s lures among your wares. Brain’s Crankbaits can be found locally at Rusty Hooks Bait & Tackle located at 4070 Charlotte Hwy, Clover, SC. 803-831-0251 You can also visit BloodyThumblures.com or TackleWarehouse.com. Now go get an amazing lure and go catch fish.

e’ve waited all winter for this month to arrive and now its here.Warmer days have moved the fish into the creeks and finally into the big coves. now, if I can only figure out the pattern these fish want, I will have a good day. Some days they will chase everything and some days they hardly will bite at all. What do you look for when you get on the water? First check the water condition. Clear, stained or muddy? Next check the wind direction, water temperature and finally check your diary. After a quick review, you see that the water temperature is 55 degrees and the water is very stained to say the least and the wind is comming out of the South. In my journal entry I see that I caught a few bass on a spinnerbait down sunny banks in the creeks. They were holding on wood only. That’s a starting point for the day. No guess work. Now you can get after them with some confidence. This is just an example of how to get you started bass fishing for the day. They may be other patterns, but you know this pattern has worked in the past years. So, you get after them! Spring has its moments, when you bass fish, crappie fish or catfish. They all bite sooner or later. We have already caught a lot of crappie in February. They were deep for the most part in 30-40 feet of water. We tight linned using a single hook and minnow. Customers were very happy. Now that March has arrived I long line out the back of the boat using 10 rods. You can still tight line. Long line fishing just covers more water when trying to find fish. My Helix 10 SI usually finds them pretty quick. I like to use a 1/16 ounce jig head with a skirt of my favorite colors, tipped with a minnow when trolling. Speeds vary depending on where the fish are located in the water column. The bass will be in the creeks. The females will be along secondary points with cover or in the back of coves roaming up and down banks. Small crankbaits such as Rapalas will catch you a ton of bass. KVD crankbaits that run less than 10 feet are good. My favorite way to catch bass in March.... floating worm. Plastics and jigs work well when the bits is slow. Catfishing is excellent. Just troll with cutbaits in the creeks. You will catch some big catfish in March. Don’t be suprised if you hookup with a catfish when you are bass fishing. It happens!!! Take a kid fishing! Be safe!~

arch is a transition month for most species of fish in our area. With the water warming and the days getting longer most fish will be in the prespawn staging areas. Largemouth will be moving into the shallows to feed but may move back out into deeper water if the water temperature drops due to a cold front. Flipping jigs in shallow water cover that is near deeper water is one method that works very well. Keeping the jig bumping the bottom will produce more strikes, especially when the water color is stained or muddy. The fish will be able to see a darker colored jig better than a light colored jig in this type of water. Try a black or green pumpkin color. Dave’s Tournament Tackle Big Bite Jigs or Lunker Lure Rattleback Flipping Jigs in 3/8oz or 1/2oz are both very popular in our area. Small crankbaits like the Rapala Shad Rap in either #5,6 or 7 size are other good options during this time. Firetiger or Crawdad are two of our best selling colors during early spring. These lures will dive to about 5 to 10 feet. Cast them along shallow points, downed timber, or shallow flats. Vary your retrieve rate some or stop the lure for just a second several times during the retrieve. Often the fish will take the bait just as you stop it. March is one of the best months of the year to catch slab sized crappies. Casting, vertically jigging or trolling are all great ways to catch them. Slow troll a small jig, such as a Kalin’s 1.5” Triple Threat Grub on a 1/16 oz. Jig head, just out from a likely spawning area in 10 to 15 feet of water. You can also use live minnows on the jig head if you prefer. I like to find the fish on my fish finder and vertically jig the area with a Charlie Brewer Crappie Slider jig or cast to it and let the jig slowly fall into the strike zone. Towards the end of the month if the water temperature gets up toward 65 degrees the fish will move into very shallow water to spawn. Newsome Creek on Tuckertown Lake seems to always produce a lot of nice crappie in the spring. As you go under the railroad bridge use your fish finder to locate the structure out from the bank on the left or right side. Once you locate them either troll, cast or vertically jig in those areas. On Badin Lake the Garr Creek area has lots of wood structure stretching from shallow water out into 20 feet or more. This area produces a lot of large Crappie every year. On High Rock Lake the Flat Swamp area in Davidson County and Second Creek area on the Rowan County side both are great areas to catch a lot of nice crappies. Striped Bass on Badin Lake will be beginning the journey up to Tuckertown dam starting in about mid March. Striped Bass do not like dirty or Muddy water. So if the water is more than stained look for clearer water down river. The Beaver Dam Creek area almost always has clearer water than the upstream area below Tuckertown Dam. If the water is not muddy, trolling the Old Whitney area with bucktails (1oz. White) or 4” shad bodies on a 1oz. Jig head is a tried and true method of catching them. Drift ing live shiners or shad also works well. If this area is muddy, then move down river to the Beaver Dam Creek area around the islands. ith a claim of being the oldest city in the United States, St. Augustine, Fla. is certainly rich in history. Stroll the streets and you’ll see Spanish colonial architecture, beautiful stretches of sandy beach and ample parklands awaiting exploration. Head out on the water, though, and you’ll also discover tremendous inshore fishing. “Redfish and trout action is really good in our inshore waters during the spring season,” said charter skipper Tommy Derringer of Inshore Adventures (www.Inshoreadventures.net; 904-377-3734). “There’s only a couple of months here when it’s clear enough to sight
CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 4
fish, so you really want to take advantage of it. The action begins in January and lasts through March and into April. This is shallow water casting up on the flats and back in our numerous feeder creeks. Basically, any creek or flat between the Francis and Mary Usina Bridge and the Palm Valley Bridge is worth a shot.” According to Derringer, reds are easiest to spot on a dropping tide. The water is still pretty cold this time of year, so areas that warm quickly are where you’ll want to start. Look for oyster bars or shells on the bottom as the biggest draws, but if the tide gets really low depressions eventually hold most of the reds. Typically, inshore redfish in this area are “slots” weighing 2 to about 10 pounds. Casting a small soft-plastic minnow or grub with a light jig head is a productive and sporty way to get in on the fun. “You want to use a 2500 size spinning reel with a 7-foot medium-light action rod, 10-pound test braid and a lightweight white or chartreuse lure because fish can be spooky in the shallows,” noted Derringer. “Make long casts so as not to crowd your quarry, and choose a lure that lands with a soft splat rather than a big splash. Live shrimp and minnows work well, too, as long as they are presented gently.” If you can’t isolate reds, Derringer suggested backing out into the main channel of the Intracoastal Waterway and working edges and pockets for sea trout. This bite is best from late March into April as the water warms up. Try a MirrOdine Suspending Twitchbait, a soft plastic paddle-tail, or a live shrimp suspended beneath a float, and you’ll see plenty of action. Most of the trout here measure 16 to 20 inches, but if you pass on these and keep looking you might come across pods of bigger fish with some lunkers in the 5- to 8-pound class. If trailering your own boat, Derringer recommends launching at the Vilano Landing Boat Ramp. You can get bait and lures right across the street at The Bait Shack (904-217-3486). For overnight accommodations, The Inn at Comanche Harbor (904-825-0003; www. camacheeinn.com) is right next door to Comanche Cove Yacht Harbor (904-829-5676; www.comancheisland.com) where transient slips are generally available.

Six Springtime Tips From Crappie Pros By Terry Madewell

North GA’s Full Service Fly Shop
rofessional crappie tournament anglers must learn the secrets of patterning crappie year-round on lakes all over the country. But over the next few months, catching slab crappie is easier than at any other time of year. The keys to success are understanding where to find fish and using the best techniques. A large gathering of professional crappie anglers fishing out of Black Camp on South Carolina’s Santee Cooper lakes provided the opportunity to glean information from several veteran crappie pros. Their strategies will work on any lake with a healthy crappie population. Matt Morgan and Kent Watson make up a successful tournament team, and they have a game plan in place before pre-fishing any lake for the first time. “First, I research the Internet to see what information is available on a lake in terms of crappie,” Morgan said. “Next, I use Google Earth to literally look at the lake from above, and I can even go back in time and see what the lake looked like during a drawdown or drought. This can provide views of underwater cover that’s exposed at low water but may be covered by fishable water when I fish it. Plus, I can see creeks and ditches that may not be marked on maps.” Watson said that after off-lake research is complete, it’s time to get on the lake and narrow the focus. “We can eliminate over 50 percent of the water before we launch the boat,” Watson said. “The next step is to use electronics, along with lake maps, to actually look at channels, ledges, drops and brushpiles to actually find fish we believe to be crappie. We use our Hummingbird graph with side and down scan to pinpoint areas we feel can be productive. “We’re often looking in or near deep water, and it may be in any part of the lake,” he continued. “During spring, we often take a hard look at the mid-to-upper portion of a lake since that water warms first.” Dave Hilton, a veteran crappie guide at Santee Cooper, said that in addition to finding crappie it’s important to find forage. “If I’m in doubt about where to fish, I’ll spend time on the water finding forage,” Hilton said. “If not guiding, I’ll be looking at various targets such as brushpiles, submerged stumps and other woody cover using electronics before I actually fish a specific target.” Morgan uses jigs, minnows or a combination of a jig and minnow to give the fish what they want. “We typically fish an 8-rod spider rig with quality rods. Quality makes a difference in detecting light bites typical of crappies,” he said. “When pre-fishing for a tournament, we only catch a couple crappies from a place then move and look for larger crappie.” If they’re not pre-fishing, they might stay with a hot spot until it slows. “Even being totally prepared, it may take several attempts before we find fish of good quantity and quality, so patience can be crucial,” Morgan added. “We know we have a proven process that Sept_NS_COHUTTA.indd works year-round, and if we stick with it we’ll find fish.”

Dead Drift or Streamers?
Streamers aren’t the only way to catch big brown trout. All of these fish were caught on nymphs.
By Chris Scalley here I fish on the Chattahoochee tailwater in Atlanta, the main targets are stream-born brown trout that can reach epic size in a nutrient-rich environment. Although many large trout are caught on large streamers, trophy anglers should not overlook dead-drifted nymphs as way to catch large fish. Yes, I agree that the “pounds of meat” or “big bait, big fish” theory is usually a sound approach to target better-than-average fish, but just think about the numbers game. With 25 years of guiding experience, I would say a third of our biggest fish were caught on nymphs. Now, the reality is that most of our clients would rather catch numbers than catch one to three better-sized fish. Usually, my first question to customers is: “Do you want to catch quantity or quality?” I explain that big fish are predators, and if you want better odds for a monster, you will have to “chuck and duck” large weighted flies with large weighted sinking fly lines. On the other hand, if you’re a dedicated nymph angler who fishes methodically, where mending line properly, setting the hook emphatically and reading water are paramount, you could very likely catch a trophy as well. It’s all about placing odds in your favor, but you have to be dedicated with either tactic, streamer or nymph. If you choose to streamer fish, one out of three trips could hook a pig. With nymphs, you’ll hook a large fish about every eight trips. I am not trying to solicit more trips here, I am just being honest with the law of averages. Guides have the luxury of going fishing just about every day, so for us the law of averages works to our favor as we simply spend more time on the water. So which will it be? Would you rather catch more fish on a nymph with the outside chance of catching a bruiser, or would you prefer to eschew the smaller fish and chunk meat for one monster brown trout? r spread Great Streams and Craft Beverages Await in Hendersonville, N.C. Photo by Nick Carter
I
f you’re an angler who enjoys following up a day on mountain trout streams with a refreshing craft beverage or two, cast your attention to the Blue Ridge mountain town of Hendersonville. This North Carolina town, about 22 miles south of Asheville, offers miles of stocked trout waters, as well as the popular Hendersonville Cheers! Trail. The two resources make it possible to spend the day catching three types of trout – rainbow, brown and brook – while spending an evening exploring three types of craft beverages – beer, wine and hard cider. First, the fishing part. North Mills River is the prime trout stream in the Hendersonville area. The river’s 4-mile section of delayed harvest waters receives an annual infusion of 11,000 trout from N.C. Wildlife, divvied between brook, rainbow and brown. Spring is a great time to fly fish the delayed harvest waters of North Mills River because no trout have been harvested since Sept. 30. Another hot spot for trout fishing is just across the Henderson County line toward Brevard. The Davidson River offers miles of public trout waters that receive annual stockings of 16,500 fish. Other lesser-known spots for fishing near Hendersonville include
three streams on the eastern side of Henderson County, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown. Rocky Broad River has a 1.2-mile stretch of hatchery support waters from Rocky River Lane to the Rutherford County line near Chimney Rock, while Cane Creek, near the Fletcher community, has 1.5-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters. For those who really want a unique experience, Little River in DuPont State Recreational Forest provides not only a scenic setting for trout fishing, but also a unique one. Delayed harvest waters flow through undisturbed mountains and over several notable waterfalls. Those waterfalls were immortalized on Hollywood’s silver screen in The Last of the Mohicans, as well as the backdrop for the exploits of Katniss Everdeen in the original Hunger Games movie. When the fishing is done, the Cheers! Trail awaits. The trail is one of North Carolina’s best, featuring 16 craft producers offering a variety of experiences. Beer fans love Sierra Nevada’s tasting room, which is one of the largest on the East Coast and features an expansive patio and outdoor amphitheater, while Bold Rock Hard Cider has emerged as a national leader in the hard cider industry and regularly hosts live music (indoors and outdoors), along with cidery tours and a food truck. Several craft producers on the trail create small-batch beverages prized for their quality and originality. Three breweries – Southern Appalachian, Triskelion and Guidon – are within a few blocks of each other in the Depot District, while Sanctuary Brewing Co. is only a few blocks away on Main Street. Sanctuary is pet-friendly with a commitment to pet rescue. Three wineries produce high-quality wines from European varietals. The newest – Point Lookout Vineyards – is located atop a 3,000-foot mountain with panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards, the area’s first vineyard, is on farmland that’s been in the family for more than nine generations. And two miles from Saint Paul, Burntshirt Vineyards offers tastings in its renovated farmhouse overlooking rolling hills of vines. Flip Pallot:
Fish Hippie Ambassador
F
ew names resonate as deeply in the world of light-tackle fly fishing as the name Flip Pallot. Many of us remember waking up on Saturday mornings to watch Flip’s show, Walker’s Cay Chronicles. Fish Hippie, the North Carolina-based outdoor lifestyle brand, has teamed up with Pallot, who plans to put Fish Hippie apparel and accessories to the test during his on- and off-thewater adventures as the brand’s ambassador. Pallot’s unparalleled passion for fishing has paved the way for his successful career and has inspired fishing enthusiasts worldwide. He is widely recognized for Walker’s Cay Chronicles, which aired for 16 seasons on ESPN, a TBS series titled Saltwater Angler and his most recent Fishing the Keys show on VERSUS network. Each show is centered around Pallot’s fishing insight as he travels around the world on angling adventures. “I smile, knowing that most of my life is spent in a glow of solar energy reflected by the world’s most beautiful wet spots,” said Pallot. “Montana meadow stream or shimmering, tropical bonefish flat, I’m stacking sun drenched miles on my Fish Hippie wardrobe. I’m enjoying the function of the product along with the fashion attention when I return to the dock!” In spring 2017, Fish Hippie launched the Solarhaze Performance Collection, which has become a fast favorite among outdoor and fishing enthusiasts nationwide, including Pallot. Function and fashion meet on and off with water with the Solarhaze Performance Collection, which has set a new standard of luxury and necessity in the performancewear industry. Technical features—including slick, moisture-wicking fabrics, UPF +40 and ultra-lightweight materials—are coupled with modern cuts, ultimate comfort and effortless style for those who appreciate the finer side of outdoor living. From hunting and fishing to work and leisure, this collection is designed to fit into your everyday agenda. The collection includes performance button-downs, technical performance hoodies, technical performance crews, performance shorts and a variety of hats. “We are honored to have such an incredible fishing icon wear and enjoy our Fish Hippie clothing,” said Ben Webb, co-founder of Fish Hippie. “We’re excited to hear how Flip’s new Fish Hippie wardrobe will serve him as he tracks many miles on and off shore.” For more information about Fish Hippie apparel and accessories, visit FishHippie.com.

I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly
at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth. There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point. Second, the fruit just taste
better coming out of your home orchard versus buying fruit from the grocers that have little to no flavors. Thirdly, it is good for your soul and you will feel more connected to the environment and nature. Whether it is an apple tree, muscadine vine or a blueberry bush; now is the time to plant. s past president and current board member of IUSA (the organization that ratifies world records for spearfishing), I get to share the excitement of big fish applications. The entire IUSA board was amazed by a recent submission. We received word that Luis Viyella had speared a 480-pound yellowfin off the Dominican Republic on Dec. 23, 2018. If approved, this fish would not only be the new spearfishing world record, but it would also beat the current IGFA All-Tackle rod-and-reel record! The All-Tackle stands at 427 pounds, held by angler Guy Yocom and caught off Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Viyella supplied the required photos of the fish, the measurements, the weighing, and the certified scale. He provided witnesses and documented the “Story of the Hunt” which was well-written and riveting. Viyella was new to freediving and bluewater hunting but accompanied by an experienced friend. They were targeting wahoo that day when the tunas showed up. He was excited when his buddy speared a 125-pound yellowfin. As requested, Viyella added a second shot to the fish—a common practice to secure the fish and make the extraction quicker and easier. A bigger tuna showed up, but Viyella’s speargun was already discharged and embedded in the 125-pound tuna, so he called out for his new Daryl Wong speargun from the boat. It wasn’t a bluewater gun, and it wasn’t the ideal set up, but he needed to act quickly. Viyella attached a line and float to the reel gun, dove down, and fired a well-placed shot into the tuna. After attaching additional floats, he made headway in raising the tuna toward the surface. His buddy dove down and placed a second shot to the head, helped manage the lines, and kept sharks at bay until it was landed—all the things a good buddy does.
News of this magnificent fish traveled fast. Viyella was told that, if approved, his fish would eclipse the current spearfishing record of 353 pounds. During the application process, he learned the rules the hard way. In order to qualify, one must shoot and land the fish without assistance from others. It was heartbreaking for Viyella and the board, but his catch is still outstanding, and IUSA awarded a meritorious award. Viyella accepted it with grace and gratitude. He said, “Inside the boat, we realized it was a very extraordinary, giant yellowfin tuna. I cannot describe our feelings of gratitude to God, our emotions, joy, sense of achievement, cheers, hugs, screams of happiness. It had been the most amazing day at sea, and the most exciting catch ever, and I had caught, on rod and reel, a 900-pound blue marlin and 600+ pound swordfish before. This bluewater apnea spearfishing catch was a higher dimension, another level of joy and sense of achievement. Glory goes to God for His love and generosity.” Amen to that, Mr. Viyella! May you continue to be blessed with that same sense of wonder and joy, for that is the real treasure of the sea. Anglers Seek To Cement Legacies At 2019 Bassmaster Classic
T
he 2019 Bassmaster Classic, scheduled for March 15-17 on the Tennessee River, will feature the usual mix of established pro fishing superstars and hungry young pros who are destined to be the stars of tomorrow. The 52 anglers converging on Knoxville will be gunning for the largest share of the $1 million prize fund, and they’ll be aiming to establish their angling legacy by winning the most important title in professional fishing. Among the field are eight former Classic winners, including four-time champion Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., and defending champion Jordan Lee of Grant, Ala., who last year became one of only three anglers to claim back-to-back wins in the event. Seven of the pros have hoisted the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of
the Year trophy, including 2018 AOY winner Justin Lucas of Guntersville, Ala., and Aaron Martens of Leeds, Ala., who has claimed the award three times. “The Classic is a showcase for some of the most accomplished bass anglers in the world,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “You’ll have veteran pros out there who’ve experienced the huge stage that is the Classic and excelled in that environment in the past. But you’ll also have some young guys who are just chomping at the bit to make a name for themselves. “That’s one of the most exciting things about the Classic—it literally will change someone’s life forever.” Anglers hungry for first-time Classic glory include Florida’s Drew Benton, Tennessee’s Brandon Lester and Arizona’s Clifford Pirch — just to name a few. Whoever wins the event, the immediate effects will be easy to see. There’s the world-famous Classic trophy, which weighs more than 40 pounds and is easily the most coveted piece of hardware in professional fishing. Then there’s the $300,000 first-place check and the chance to stand before an arena full of screaming fans as confetti cannons set the stage for the accomplishment of a lifetime. This year’s weigh-ins will be held in Thompson-Boling Arena on the campus of the University of Tennessee. As always, the Classic will be held in conjunction with the fan-favorite Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods. Known as the most important consumer show in the bass fishing world, the Classic Expo will be held in the Knoxville Convention Center and the adjacent World’s Fair Exhibition Hall. Companies from across the fishing industry use the Expo annually to debut new products, and fans will be able to purchase many lures, rods, reels and accessories for the first time anywhere. For more information about the Bassmaster Classic, go to www. bassmaster.com.

Baja’s Inshore Action
On The East Cape
By Nick Carter Big cubera snapper are just one of the species waiting inshore on the East Cape. This one was caught by Jim Rodriguez, a cameraman with the TV show Livin’ The Dream. Photo by Jimmy Nelson.
J
ust looking at a map will tell you the Sea of Cortez is a fish trap. Separated from the Pacific Ocean by Mexico’s nearly 800-mile long Baja California Peninsula, it’s a 62,000 square mile canyon that drops to depths approaching 10,000 feet. The sportfishing out of Cabo San Lucas, on the Peninsula’s southern tip is legendary. It is a bustling destination where marlin, sailfish and tuna abound. But Capt. Jimmy Nelson, host of the TV show Livin’ The Dream, pointed to a quieter destination and some awesome fishing up the Peninsula’s East Cape. Out of the Buena Vista Beach Resort about an hour’s drive north of Cabo, the Sea of Cortez drops to 1,000-foot depths just a few hundred yards off sand beaches. There’s a fleet of sportfishing boats waiting to take anglers offshore to chase all the big pelagics, and the inshore action borders on unbelievable. Even shorebased fishermen can catch some species typically associated with long runs offshore. At a place renowned for billfish, Nelson said the inshore action is as much of a reason to go as the marlin. “You never know what you’re going to get. There’s all kinds of things that will be right there on the edge,” Nelson said. “Roosterfish, African pompano, cubera snapper, Sierra mackerel, even dolphin, wahoo and yellowfin tuna will hit your popper right off the beach.” Never knowing what’s on the end of the line requires anglers to gear up. This is not the same as inshore fishing in the Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic. Nelson said casting 8-inch poppers or live lookdowns from shore is a ton of fun and requires 8000 size spinning reels. A big cubera snapper slamming your popper is a fight you’ll never forget. “It’s a rush,” he said. “You’re catching a bottomfish on top, so they go straight down to the bottom. You have to gear up with some pretty heavy tackle.” Trolling just off the beach is another tactic that puts anglers on a surprising array of the Pacific’s best sportfish. Big roosterfish might be primary target, but again, you never know what will eat when you’re pulling lookdowns and goggle eyes. Big yellowfin tuna have been known to surprise anglers just off the beaches, so 30 wide reels and heavy tackle are required. COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM
