itchin’ tubes exploded in popularity following Denny Brauer’s 1998 Bassmaster Classic victory. A month before the tournament, the legendary shallow-water pitcher/flipper was on a solid summertime jig bite on a shallow flat of North Carolina’s High Rock Lake. When the jig stopped producing during Classic week, he reached for a 3.5-inch tube and discovered the fish wanted something a little different. Brauer won the 1998 Classic pitchin’ tubes. The technique has been a mainstay ever since. Unlimited Seasonal Use Tubes get bites when nothing else will, and there are no seasonal limitations. Brauer’s win came in early August in hot shallow water. I recently caught bass on a Big Bite Bait Tour Flipping Tube from the frigid winter waters of northeastern Oklahoma.

“I think it’s definitely a year-round bait,” said Brauer. “As anglers, we initially got conditioned to think tubes were a spawning-season bait. But shoot, it’s very productive year-round. As much as anything, it’s simply a finesse tool to pitch anytime the conditions call for it.” Hook Size And Rigging Are Critical I gravitate toward the 3.5-inch tube rigged with a 3/0 Mustad hook. Following his Classic win on the 3.5-inch tube, Brauer had Strike King design a larger 4.5-inch tube so he could match it with a larger 4/0 Mustad hook he felt would put more fish in the boat. Pitch the size you’re comfortable with, but be sure to match tube size to hook size. A 3.5-inch tube demands a 3/0 hook. A 4- or 4.5-inch tube marries best to a 4/0 hook. And DO NOT bury the hook point into the tube. Instead, Texas rig it with the hook point level on the back of the tube. You’ll land more fish, and it will still perform relatively snag-free. Rattles And Weight Some people love rattles; some people hate them. I stuff a glass rattle inside the body of my tubes most of the time. Line size and worm-weight size are also personal preferences determined by water clarity and the fall rate bass seem to favor. A lot of anglers use 20-pound test with a ¼-ounce weight. Brauer goes meatier with 3/8- or ½-ounce weight and 25-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon. I’ve caught bass for years with a 1/8-ounce weight and 15-pound old-school Big Game. Watch The Line You must be vigilant in watching your line where it meets the water after every single pitch or flip. Very seldom do bass just thump a tube. It’s like they’re eating a potato chip rather than chomping a bite of rib eye. Often the line will just stop falling, and you need to set the hook! Still Charting Hits Lures are like country music artists. Some bust onto the scene, score a couple hits, and soon fade from popularity. Others prove that true talent never goes away. Pitchin’ tubes are whole lot like George Strait or Reba McEntire. They were mega stars at the time Brauer won the ’98 Classic, and they’re still playing to sell out crowds 20 years later.

n the early 1930s watch manufacturers took a clue from Henry Ford’s favorite quote concerning his automobiles, “You can have any color as long as it is black.” Black dialed watches became the rage especially with pilots and race drivers. Of course, since the black dial went well with a black tuxedo, the adventurer’s black dial watch easily moved from the airplane hangar to dancing at the nightclub. Now, Stauer brings back the “Noire”, a design based 27 jewels and handon an elegant timepiece built in 1936. Black dialed, assembled parts drive complex automatics from the 1930s have recently hit this classic masterpiece. new heights at auction. One was sold for in excess of $600,000. We thought that you might like to have an affordable version that will be much more accurate than the original. Basic black with a twist. Not only are the dial, hands and face vintage, but we used a 27-jeweled automatic movement. This is the kind of engineering desired by fine watch collectors worldwide. But since we design this classic movement on state of the art computer-controlled Swiss built machines, the accuracy is excellent. Three interior dials display day, month and date. here’s a daytime swordfish bite developing in the northern Gulf of Mexico off Alabama. The fish have always been there, but few anglers have figured out how to catch them when the sun is out. Dustin Bedgood, aka Capt. Fed, of Orange Beach’s FED UP Charters, has spent several years learning the area’s daytime deep-water fishery. Drawing from successful captains in wellknown deep-drop locations off south Florida and Venice, Louisiana, Capt. Fed adapted techniques to a point where he’s consistent enough to take charter clients to catch swordfish. The fishery is productive just off the continental shelf about an hour and a half ride from the Alabama coast aboard Capt. Fed’s 33-foot Freeman. During daylight hours, swordfish hang out past where the bottom drops precipitously from 200 feet into 1,000-foot depths. This is where anglers can expect a typical day of four or five swordfish bites with one fish landed. The weights average about 120 pounds, with a top-end over 300 pounds. While the fish aren’t as big as in south Florida, a 150-pound sword is more than most anglers want to handcrank from those depths, anyway. “They’re a very intense fish,” said Capt. Fed. “They can hurt you very easily.” The keys to the fishery are bottom structure, the right gear and good bait. Capt. Fed fishes in 1,000 to 3,000 feet of water, and always around some type of structure. “Whether it’s a nipple, a ledge, a canyon or a salt dome, that’s where the swordfish are,” he said. “All it takes is some little feature that changes the currents and attracts bait.” Good maps of the ocean floor and sophisticated electronics are necessary to find the right type of bottom in several thousand feet of water. On top of high-end sonar, Capt. Fed uses custom J&M Tackle Blackout Sword Rods with lots of backbone but a very soft tip. Swordfish don’t just load up on the rod. They slash at the bait first, and a soft tip is needed to

notice the bump when there’s so much line out. “Once you get it set, the rod will develop a rhythm with the waves and the current. You’ve got to watch that rod,” said Capt. Fed. “If you see it do anything that’s not normal, something has happened. That’s when you start reeling it up or dropping it down. You’ve got to tease them just like any other billfish.” Capt. Fed fishes Shimano 50W and 80W reels. The drag is set loose because swordfish have soft mouths, and battles can last an hour or more. The reels are loaded with 80-pound braid tied into a 150-foot wind-on leader of 250-pound mono with a Bimini twist. Fed uses a minimum of 5 pounds of weight, and secures Lindgren-Pitman lights to his leader with rubber bands. Bait is important, and tying it correctly takes practice. After the initial slash, the jig is up if the hook tears out or the bait doesn’t retain a natural presentation. A 10-inch squid sewn with 70-pound waxed floss around a 10/0 to 12/0 J hook is one of Capt. Fed’s favorite baits. While an average day might bring one swordfish to the boat, Fed said he’s also seen five-fish days when conditions are perfect. Swords are very sensitive to the moon, and daily feeding times seem to correspond with moonrise and moonset. Capt. Fed plans trips so there’s time to load coolers with grouper and tilefish before switching to swordfish through the prime moon position. The swordfish bite goes on year-round, but Fed said he’s noticed an April into July peak, which could be attributed to more time on the water during peak tourist season in Orange Beach. And that brings up another reason to fish the Alabama Gulf Coast. There’s plenty to keep the whole family happy while the anglers are out on the water. Capt. Fed (Dustin Bedgood) can be contacted through his website www.fedupcharters.com, at (251) 377-7135 or by email at fedupcharters@gmail.com

The Force ISC Dolly, introduced by Parkit360°, is a compact motorized trailer dolly that allows anyone to move any boat or camper. Available in 5,000 lb. and 10,000 lb. models, it’s a powerful tool that enables easy parking in tight spots without the need for a truck or back-breaking labor. The dolly is compatible with practically every camping, boat or cargo trailer with optional adapters for spring-loaded and Atwood hitches. It’s battery powered, easily transportable and compact. The dolly body itself weighs approximately 70 pounds, making it easy to disassemble and transport in the trunk of a small car. The dolly is built to easily handle both smooth and rough surfaces. No matter the terrain, be it grass, packed gravel or asphalt, the dolly provides plenty of traction. For optimal usage and safety, users should avoid operating on more than a 6 percent incline. Connecting the dolly to a trailer is as intuitive as possible. It can be done through a ball mount, the tongue jack itself or the universal telescopic adaptor. Once attached, it wheels around easily. The operation works with a simple button in forward and backward movements. With an intelligent speed controller, users can achieve fast or more precise parking. At the same time, the motor’s ability to start and stop gradually prevents damage to the trailer from sudden stopping, something that makes the Force ISC Dolly stand out above its competition.

or inshore anglers who love calm, shallow waters, St. Simons Island is worth investigation. On the Georgia coast between Savannah, Ga. and Jacksonville, Fla., this hot spot is chock full of redfish, speckled seatrout and sheepshead. Check it out on a map, and you’ll instantly see the possibilities, as St. Simons is surrounded by marshlands, flats and drainages from the mainland. “We have great fishing on a year-round basis, but February and March are especially good for the specks, reds and sheepshead,” said Capt. Tim Cutting, of Coastal Georgia Inshore Charters (912-230-1814; www.fishthegeorgiacoast. com). “Our marshes are extremely rich in nutrients, which is a big draw for the fish. Even better, there’s very little industrial encroachment in this region.” Indeed, the St. Simons area hosts the second largest coastal marshland in the United States, trailing only the vastness of Louisiana. That means there’s plenty of shallow water to prospect. The area also sports the second-greatest influx of tides on the East Coast after Maine, with an average of about 6-1/2 feet, so there’s lots of current available to push bait around. “Dropping tides are best for reds and trout during late winter and spring,” advised Cutting. “Push as far back as you can in the small creeks behind Cumberland, Jekyll and St. Simons islands and work the oyster beds. Redfish love to be around those beds because they hold so many baitfish, shrimp and crabs. We use light spinning tackle with 20-pound braided lines, 7 to 7-1/2-foot rods and size 2000 to 4000 reels. Most of the reds run 14 to 32 inches.” For lures, Cutting throws gold spoons and scented plastics or Berkley Gulp! grubs. Because the waters are so shallow, he’ll also fly-fish, using Deceivers or Clouser Minnows to draw strikes. When the tide is high, he’ll use a trout-pattern Rapala Skitter Walk or a bone-colored Super Spook Jr. as search baits for topwater fun. While the redfish are in depths from 6 inches to 7 feet, seatrout prefer deeper pockets of 8 to 24 feet. “Find a nice hole, and you can work the entire slope for specks in the 14- to 22-inch range,” noted Cutting. “I’ll jig these areas with a 3-1/2-inch Little Boss Paddletail grub or a 4-inch, chicken-on-a-chain pattern shad. Both lures are from the Bass Assassin saltwater line.” As for tasty sheepshead, they hold tight to structure in the shallows during February but move to ocean wrecks in 40- to 60-foot depths 3 to 6 miles offshore come March. “They are plentiful, love fiddler crabs, and run up to 10 pounds,” said Cutting. It makes sense to fish the St. Simons area with a charter skipper on your first few visits. As you gain local knowledge, you’ll find the free McKay Boat Launch (529 Beachview Drive) off the F.J. Torras Causeway is perfectly positioned for fast access to some of the best fishing.

22.1-pound big-scale pomfret caught on Dec. 28 off the coast of Maryland is a new state record. It might also be a new world record. Jeff Rosenkilde, of Monkton, Maryland, was deep-drop swordfishing in the Atlantic Canyons about 75 miles off Ocean City when something picked up the whole squid he was fishing in about 1,000 feet of water. “The fish started fighting,” the 33-year-old angler said, “At first I thought it was big-eyed tuna, but it had a purple, iridescent color.” It took 15 to 20 minutes to reel up all that line, but Rosenkilde’s crewmates knew the species and knew it was exceptionally large. A biologist verified the species as a big-scale pomfret (Taractichthys longipinnis). Its weight was certified by Hunter’s Crab and Seafood Market in Grasonville, Maryland. The big-scale pomfret is commonly found in the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, but occasionally moves northward. Rosenkilde’s catch could potentially qualify for an alltackle world record by the International Game Fish Association. The current world record is 20.6 pounds. That fish was caught Oct. 17, 2004 off St. Augustine, Fla.

ebruary fishing on Lake Rhodhiss and Lake Hickory is still going to be a slow man’s game for a few more weeks. February is basically going to be a repeat of last month. It’s still cold outside, water temperatures are still down, and fish are still going to be very lethargic. We don’t have a hot hole on either lake and typically do not have birds giving us any idea of where the fish are leaving you one option. Get out there and look. I’m going to start every trip trolling lures with my big motor looking for schools of stripers. On both lakes I’m typically going to stay on the lower ends of the lake looking for structure. Creek mouths, rock ledges, sand bars, sand flats, and main lake points are all good starting points. Your main objective here needs to be marking fish. A lot of
the fish you mark may not actually come out of its school to chase and bite your lure because they’re so slow right now, but remember where they are. After doing this on 3 or 4 spots it’s time to go back to the schools you’ve marked and slow troll live baits. Sitting on top of these schools or just barely creeping baits around these areas will be the best way to get a striper to bite. Wherever you are marking the fish put your baits 1 foot above them and hold on. Nothing this month is going to be wide open by any means but spring is just around the corner!

If You Don’t Know, Now You Know By: Michelle Armstrong, Professional Angler
ou may have noticed the name Michelle Armstrong within the Youtdoor pages of The Angler Magazine over the years. Not only is she an writer, but she’s also a professional bass angler from North Carolina. Among her other “faces”, she is a wife, mother of two, a manicurist and owner of The Nail Therapist, nail salon. She admits it’s an odd combination but explains with a smile, “It’s a good balance”. She started her career in competitive bass fishing around 1993, when she competed, along with husband Troy, in national couples’ trails amassing nearly 30 top 20 finishes and four consecutive national championships. In 1999 they acquired their first sponsor and were placed on the Bass Pro Shops Pro staff team. Michelle remains on the Pro Staff today as the only female on the team. You can catch her teaching in store seminars several times a year. In 2005, when Women’s Bassmaster hosted its inaugural tournament, Michelle was one of 100 female anglers in the country to participate in the “Pro” division until it disbanded in 2009. Though she stepped away from the national circuit, she continued to compete at a local level. During this time she achieved the Big Bass Bash Ladies Champion 2016 at Lake Randleman and 2017 at Lake Norman. In 2018 she and her husband was awarded the Adam and Eve couples Tournament Anglers of the Year.
organization that allows wounded and disabled veterans to compete in tournaments. Last year (2019) with the support of a few new sponsors, Michelle decided to once again compete at a national level. Along with long time sponsor Bass Pro Shops, she added Powell Rods, Caraway Creek, Brains Crankbaits and The Angler Magazine to her support team. She joined the LBAA (Ladies Bass Angler Association). This was her rookie season with this tournament trail. Michelle traveled all over the United States competing with some of the best female anglers in the country. She had a consistent year finishing top 8 in every tournament. She qualified for the championship and by the end of her season, Michelle was named 2019 Rookie of the Year and ended her year 3rd highest ranking female in the country. Also this year Michelle was able to compete locally, and again earned the Big Bass Bash Ladies Champion on Lake Norman and High Rock Lake. Michelle says she had no plans yet for 2020, but she is sure some fishing will be involved. She explains it is largely dependent on monetary support. Though women are strong in the sport of fishing, they still only make up about 33% of the participants. “We haven’t fully been recognized for our marketing potential. But we are a force to be reckoned with and hopefully I’ll witness the discovery of that first hand, one day soon”.
“Fishing is a passion for me and I love to compete. I have been blessed in so many ways. Money, or lack thereof, will not keep me from Michelle has a deep respect for law enforcement and the military. pursuing my dreams” She often volunteers to help law enforcement officers teach kids how to fish. I said goodbye this month to a man who was one of the biggest influences in my fishing life, my Uncle Dick Kinna. Along with my dad, Bill Raines, and Jack Teter they taught me about the lifelong passion that being on a lake or sitting beside a pond could bring. He was always ready to go, a reminder that I needed to hear as I reach the point in my life when grandchildren are ready to go. I will not forget the techniques he taught me from cane poles and crickets, heavy tackle and rotten shrimp to busting a topwater. He would tell me I wasn’t holding my mouth right when I wasn’t catching fish (not often with him). He passed his passion to his grandson, Wayne, who you see in the picture. This was the last time we would fish together, May 2015. Failing strength and eyesight would not be a deterrent on this day. He proved that he really could catch fish with his eyes closed. I will truly miss him and think of him every time I fish or work on The Angler. Tight lines, Uncle Dick! COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THE ANGLERMAG.COM

Forecast for Lake Norman By: Capt. Craig Price, Fish On! Guide Service PO Box 1623, Denver, NC 28037
s I sit down in early January to write February’s report, I hear thunder, Ain winter, it’s 62⁰F and pouring rain - at 9am. These conditions used to be rare but they’ve now occurred twice in less than a week. As my report develops, I realize I’m writing a diatribe that falls somewhere between a historical account of local weather versus a rant about the unpredictability of current weather patterns and winter fishing.
warm water into creeks, coves, and even upstream. A few well-known Norman rules of thumb in winter are: on a west wind, look in McCrary Creek; on a NE wind look along the river bank near Kiser Island, or down south in Lucky Creek; on a S-SW wind look in the river below or above the 150 bridge, down south in Ramsey Creek, or in the area where Davidson and Reed Creeks come together.
Personally, I haven’t decided if global warming is totally man-made, or due to recurring natural cycles. I’m leaning toward some of both. But anyone who spends much time outdoors has to have noticed that our winter weather patterns have changed.
All of the above locales can still be good, but in more recent years the stretch of river from Marker 10 to Marker 3 usually holds bait and fish in February. And don’t overlook No Man’s Land this time of year because the fish can stage along the river here as they move south, or north.
And anyone who has fished Lake Norman for more than a few years has to have noticed, our fishery has really changed. Weather patterns certainly have impacted winter fishing here, but the introduction of “new” gamefish and forage over the last 10-15 years has also played a role.
As 2019 turned to 2020, the bait, hybrids, spots, and perch were working the river from Markers 18A to 21, and into Stumpy, Rocky and Hicks Creeks at times. Further south on any given day, Mountain, Little or Beaver Dam creeks could be productive.
The gamefish I refer to are hybrid stripers, spotted bass, and white perch, and the bait is blueback herring. I’m not here to discuss the positives or negatives of the weather or fishery changes. I mention them because mid-winter is now a prime example of just how unpredictable things have gotten, i.e. the forage and gamefish may or may not be where we used to consistently find them. Historically, much of the fishing activity on Norman in February into March was associated with the hot water discharges from the steam and nuclear plants. But if the water throughout the lake doesn’t get really cold, then add herring (an open water bait most of the year) to the winter schools of shad in the creek mouths and river channel (alewives too), and the result is the fish may operate just about anywhere on any day, even in February.
Confused yet? Yeah, me too at times. My advice is to develop a network of trusted anglers that live on, and typically fish, different areas of the lake. Share info frequently to keep up with where the action is at any given time. Otherwise, use the wind to help you predict where to start, and always keep an eye out for birds working over bait and fish. More than ever, be ready to fish just about anywhere on any given day or week. Once you locate bait and fish, it’s a matter of figuring out what depth they’re working and how to get baits in front of them. The usual assortment of live baits and artificials that I discuss regularly are all still valid. One variance is if the water does get cold (45F or below), try smaller, slower, and duller presentations. Good luck and Fish On!
It’s a given that the river channel from No Man’s Land to the 150 bridge holds warmer water discharged by the Marshall Steam Station. On the lower end, the McGuire Nuclear Station’s discharges impact water temps in a big area from Ramsey Creek past Marker 3. Anglers have learned that even small increases in water temperature, +/1 degree, can be a big deal to a cold-blooded fish living in water that’s 45⁰F or below. We also learned to not underestimate how far the wind can push this warmer water. Sustained wind from any direction can push the 6 CHARLOTTE/PIEDMONT

ith the holidays and hunting season over, it’s time to get back on the water. This time of the year can be very hit or miss. Watching the weather can be your best friend. While the actual temperature may play a role, something more important is sharp temperature changes. Days with sharp drops in temperature are going to be the least favorable and days with a consistent temperature or rise will be more desirable. Generally speaking, leading up to rain produces warmer weather as well as a drop in pressure, which are both favorable conditions. The closer to the weather the better, but don’t put your safety in jeopardy.
If you can locate schooling shad, you are on the fish. Depending on conditions, the bait fish may vary in the water column so try a variety of depths to see if you can hone in on where they are holding. For bass, I would stick with a shad like lure and retrieve slower than normal as the fish will not be as active as in warmer water. Rocks heated from the day’s sun will also hold fish trying to stay warm. For catfish, still find these schools of bait fish and fish below them as catfish will follow the schools feeding on fish from the school dying off and floating to the bottom. Look for transition points such as sharp drop offs or creek mouths. Live or cut bait is my go to on a Santee or Carolina rig. Try different depths as catfish are not always the ‘bottom feeders’ people think they are. They can be found in all depths of the water column. Crappie can still be caught all over the lake either long lining, drifting or anchoring up. Live minnows are preferred on an ultra light rod. Bridges, docks and structure are all good places to start or go at night and fish under a light. As a general rule of thumb for this time of year I prefer deeper water and fish mid to upper water column. Keep safety in mind. With the cooler temperatures we tend to wear more clothes and bulk up. In the event of an accident those clothes will hold water and weigh you down considerably making it sometimes impossible to stay afloat without a P.F.D. Be mindful, keep your P.F.D. handy and make it home safe to your loved ones!

e have had a wet and warm winter so far and our lakes are flowing and staying unseasonably warm. The fishing has been very good in January and should continue to be great this month. The warmer water temps have the fish a little scattered out and if we get some colder weather it should tighten up the deeper schools a bit. Umbrella rigs and jerkbaits will still be very productive in February as long as the water doesn’t get real dirty. The shallow bite will stay strong this month with good size bass being caught on spinnerbaits, jigs and crankbaits. Start looking for areas that have more direct sunlight on bright February days as those big bass will pull up during the day to feed and warm up. Rocks and dark hard cover is best for this approach. It’s a fun month to fish our Yadkin lakes because you can have fish out deep in the clearer water and find some big ones up shallow in stained to dirty water as well. Some of the biggest bass in the lake will be caught in February so be sure to get out there and wet a line. Be safe and tight lines to everyone. Brought to you by:

lthough February can be one of the colder months of the year, it is also one of the best times to fish Wateree. The lake starts to wake up from its hibernation like state, and as the longer days and warmer winds start to increase the water temps. Fishermen should get ready to spend some time on the water because these next few months are some of the best fishing of the year. Weather will play a significant role for Bass fishing for the next few months. Right now Bass are transitioning from the late winter deep water stage, to a pre spawn stage. Throughout the month the bass should work themselves back toward the secondary points of coves in preparation for the upcoming spawn. Bass will also be more aggressive this time of year. There is a long list of productive lures this time of year. Most will be some kind of minnow imitation like Crankbaits, Jerkbaits, Spinnerbaits, Chatterbaits, Swimbaits, and Topwaters. Have a rod rigged with soft plastic for quick follow up cast on short striking or more lethargic Bass. Crappies are likely on the move due to the time of year and weather. The Crappie spawn will occur soon after the water temps reach 55-65 degrees. Until then, a good method to find fish is start in the backs of creeks around timber or brush. Then work out towards the deeper water until the fish are found. The Mid-lake can be a more productive area to fish this time of year. Trolling and jigging live minnows can be a productive method this time of year. Catfish are going to start gorging on food and being more active. The spawn is a few months out but the fish will begin to prepare for the event as soon as possible. Try fishing the lower half to middle of the lake, in 10’25’ will give you the best odds. Fishing with cut bait on mouth of creeks, secondary points, bridge pilings, and main lake ledges are all good spots for activity. Wateree striper can be mysterious at times. The southern end of the lake is always the best place to start. As always with striper fishing, find the birds. Live bait is a good option, as well as planer board rigs have been productive.

Time to Mop Up By: Michelle Armstrong, Professional Angler
girl who is a self titled, “horrible housekeeper”, it’s rare Akindstoaofhear me talk about a mop. However, there is a specific “mop” that doesn’t make me cower in disgust, and that’s a mop jig. Lucky for me, this is one of the ideal times of the year to “mop up” some Bass.
Water temperatures are generally cold for the better part of the day now and the fishing slows. Shorter days lessen the times for Mr. Bass to seek warm locations so fisherman have to be opportunistic. My all time favorite bait is a jig. A jig can produce a bite in just about any circumstance. So a mop jig just broadens that theory. Most folks use a mop jig to slowly drag along the water’s bottom but I have found you can pitch or flip just as effectively. A few things set a mop jig apart from a traditional jig, but mostly it’s the skirt action. The mop jig is designed to “puff ” out and fall slow. Once on the bottom it stays “puffed” so when crawled slowly over a ledge, across riprap, rocks, or around stumps, the subtle movement of the skirts is extremely lifelike. As a result of its guileful movement I prefer to pair it with an equally mischievous trailer, the Cutter Craw by Bizz Baits. With the action from the mop jig you don’t want an overpowering trailer. Remember, no creature moves fast in the cold. Bait and predator alike are slow moving so keep your movement and profile minimal. Once the skirt flares, the trailer bait is the only target left for the fish to strike so you better make it a good one. For mop crawling I tend to stick with a 1/2oz mop jig. I still get a slow fall and the bigger(ish) profile tends to attract a better bite. For pitching and flipping brush, I prefer to down size a tad. A 3/8oz will suffice. Control the already slow fall with your rod tip height, allowing the bait to bump and deflect branches on the way down. Oftentimes, like with traditional jigs, the bite will come on the fall. So watch your line and feel for the subtle changes. These presentations will all produce big bites. If you’re looking for quantity, not quality, trim the fat a little. Cut the skirt at an angle and add a Bizz Bait Killer Kraw. When you think you’ve cut enough skirt, cut some more. It may look puny, but it’s crazy effective. Be mindful that the trimmed skirt will speed up the fall. This is an ideal quick snack for slow moving Bass. My Bass Pro Shops Platinum bait caster, paired with the Powell Inferno 733 does the trick for me to present this bait for all of the above technique. Now grab your “mop” and go catch, er um, “mop” up fish.

Off To a Hot Start By: Vinny “Commish” Ferreri Founder of Queen City Kayak Bass Fishing Club, LLC
onths of behind the scenes preparing came to life last month on Lake Wylie. The sixth season of QCKBF has begun. In 2019, we averaged 69 anglers a M month, and we had 67 paid members. We have shown growth every year over the
past five years, and we were expecting the same this year. What a kickoff event it was. Rusty Hooks Bait and Tackle was our sponsor for the event, and our host. David Winters provided some amazing food at the weigh-in, fried chicken, hush puppies and Cole slaw, and of course a roof for us during the incoming storm. The growth we had hoped for showed itself in January. The club is only a few anglers from 100 paid members, and we had 89 anglers come compete in event 1. That is an outstanding number. It was great getting back into it with the same old veterans and it was an awesome experience getting to meet so many new anglers. 89 is our second highest turnout in 6 years. We had 96 on Lake Norman the first year we rolled out the $1000 first place prizes in 2017. With the support we have from the surrounding community in both North Carolina and South Carolina, I feel like the sky is the limit. This club is built for the angler. Inviting, simple, fun, friendly competition, and payouts to make it all worth your time. Overall, the fishing was tough on Wylie last month. The lake changed colors multiple times the week of the event. The lake levels went up, down, down, and up all week. Fish were scattered and even the anglers who took home checks did not catch many fish. Of the 89-angler field, we only had 15 limits, and we had 28 anglers with zero fish, with another 21 only catching 1 fish. Despite a rough day on the water for most, some food and hospitality at the hometown shop had most anglers in a good mood. The Catawba River keeper Foundation came out and showed some love for QCKBF today as well! It was great to meet them and we look forward to building a working relationship. On the other end of the spectrum, we had some big limits up top, and some huge payouts as well. Greg Donlin was the big winner today. He took first with 75 inches and won the Emerald School of Excellence big bass with a 20.25. He took home $1445!!!! Wow. 75 inches is the 3rd largest limit ever turned in during a QCKBF event, and Greg also has the largest limit caught as well. -Second place also broke 70 inches! Chris Goodwin took home $750 for his 70.25inches. -Third place, landed on 70 and Tim Sabella Took home $600. -Fourth Place went to Mr. 2x Champ Matt Hawj with 65.25 worth $470. -Fifth place worth $330 went home with Tracy Stanford with his 65in. -Sixth was a new guy, who took some convincing to come out and I think he is glad he did. Kyle Hancock had 64.25 and took home $225. -Tj Worrell came out of the woodwork and snatched seventh with 63in worth $195. -Tyler Smith always a threat on Wylie took eighth with 59in for $150. -Home Lake Joey Randall aka Paddle Boy 2020, took 9th with 57.75 and earned $100. -HamBone aka Graham Reay landed in 10th with 57in earning a free spot into the Lake Murray event. -Joe Parkulo was able to cash another check by winning the Yak Bass’n Small Bass award with a 7.75in worth $230!! Our second event takes us south to the amazing, and huge Lake Murray. This is the clubs first trip to Lake Murray. We are extremely excited to catch some giant bass on February 8th. The QCKBF team knows the potential this lake has, and we know we have the anglers to take advantage of it. We hope to keep our large turnouts going and expect a large crowd. River Runner in Columbia is sponsoring the event and we are proud to be working with them. We are an open club, allowing new anglers to join any month of the year. Fabulous February By: Britt Stoudenmire Fforjunkie Barry Loupe. Barry and I met over 16 years ago at the memorial service our mutual friend, Cap’n Jack West from East Tennessee, a legend and
“ abulous February” is a term coined by my good friend and fellow smallmouth contemporary in the advancement of river smallmouth fishing. We both knew instantly that we shared a common bond and fishing was going to be an avenue for a lifelong friendship. After the funeral, Barry and I kept in touch and he became a mentor to me in both fishing and life. Barry was known then, in the early stages of the river smallmouth phenomenon, as the go-to expert in fishing jig-n-pigs for river smallmouth. His home river is the North Fork of the Holston River near Saltville, VA and, at the time we met, he had taken a liking to Butch Neal’s custom tied jigs - typically dressed with a small, slender Venom chunk. While Barry’s box of lead could nearly sink a boat he usually only needed one or two jigs for a day’s work. He taught me early on that cold water meant big fish. And while anytime from November thru the end of March could be good, February was the most fabulous month for chasing big, winter smallmouth on the jig-n-pig. You see, back then, very few people were fishing for smallmouth during the winter months, and those who did, were looked upon as being absolutely crazy. People would often ask, “How in this world can you catch fish during the middle of the freezing winter?” But I loved the thought that no one else was doing it and some 16 years later it still appeals to me as much as the first day I ever hit the river in the winter. After a year of knowing Barry and discussing winter fishing regularly, I decided to attack it head on by trying to perfect my jig skills. No rain, snow, sleet, or wind could keep me off the river as I fished almost every single day almost exclusively using a jig-n-pig. Everyday when I left the river, I came home, called Barry and we discussed all the small nuances of fishing a jig. The next day I would head out a little more armed and with a little more confidence. It was a learning process but I became a better angler that winter while Barry and I were becoming better friends, too. I perfected a setup that worked best for me at the time and then have toyed with it over the years. My first setup was a G.Loomis IMX SJR723 6’ medium-heavy spinning rod with a 2500 series Sahara reel. I preferred the green Power Pro 20/6 braided line that, back then, used to fade to more of a white color which you could see very well on the water. In the beginning, I tied directly to the bait using a Palomar knot. As time progressed, I moved to a G.Loomis GLX SJR822 6’6” medium spinning rod because I like the longer length for hook sets and the softer tip for forgiveness when big fish got near the boat. I switched out reels several times and eventually settled on the Shimano Ci4+ Stradic, which I now think is the best reel ever made for smallmouth fishing. Power Pro ‘improved’ the dies in their braided line and they no longer fade meaning, I could no longer see my line on the water. So, I changed to the Hi-Vis Yellow and added in an 8’ – 10’ 12lb Gamma Edge Fluorocarbon leader to give more bounce in my presentation of the jig. As far as jigs go, I tinkered with those as well. I liked the Butch Neal jig that Barry used due to its small, sparse profile, which was perfect for smallmouth fishing. However, I found that the round head hung up often on the bottom of our rocky and ledge-filled rivers. I decided to switch to an Arky head style jig with a plastic brush weed guard that I trimmed back. I gravitated from silicon to round rubber to even purchasing a vice and tying my own jigs. Eventually, I settled on a jig I named the “Undulator Jig” that was parts of several of my favorite jigs. It included the Arky style head, typically in ¼-oz size, tied with sparse round rubber, rabbit hair, and a pinch of bucktail. It could be fished in a variety of ways imitating both a crayfish and a mad tom. It was especially effective on the pause or fall when the undulation of the rabbit hair due to the water current would trigger those hard to get winter bites. As far as fishing these baits, I learned an awful lot about how to use the jig to telegraph the bottom. And in next month’s addition, I will tackle, specifically, how to fish the jig and the tube as we move into the March pre-spawn bite where the tube will typically take the place of the jig as the go-to bait. If you decide to head out this winter, make sure to take extreme caution. Prepare accordingly, wear proper clothes, and always wear a PFD. When the water and air temps are as cold as they are in the winter, there is no room for error!

lot of anglers dream of catching trophy trout, but successfully catching them doesn’t repeatedly happen by accident. Sure, everyone has the chance, but to land them consistently takes a certain thought process. Here are three keys to improve your repeated success of landing trout over 27 inches during the cooler months. Timing Most anglers go fishing when they have time, such as on the weekends, or when the weather is nice. If catching trophy trout is your ultimate goal, you need to fish when they feed. Following the solunar table feeding times is a great guide in determining when to fish. Place yourself in the optimum location during the major or minor feed times and stay focused 30 minutes before and after the listed times. Keeping your lure in the water during these times versus traveling from one spot to another will greatly increase your odds of catching fish. Slow-Sinking Lures As we all know, fish are cold blooded and their movements and feeding slow as the water temperature slumps. Slowing your retrieve and lure fluctuation is crucial to entice trophy trout to strike. Tying on a slow-sinking lure is also key. Some will argue the size of the lure needs to be larger, but I don’t feel that is always true. Having a lure that can hover over structure, just off the bottom, or slowly sink down the edge of a pothole is key. This presents an easier meal and allows fish time to react. Get In With Them Getting in there with them is the step many anglers have an issue with, and in my opinion, it is the single most important aspect that separates trophy trout fishermen from the average angler. Wade fishing is the key ingredient to consistently catching trophy trout on artificial lures. Stealth is important when attempting to capture any wild animal, and fish are no different. The more mature the game, the more savvy the angler needs to become. Not only does wading give you this ability over fishing from a boat, it also allows you to silently slow your movements and cover an area thoroughly from different angles. Having your feet planted in the mud lowers your profile and also lets you determine exactly what the bottom is composed of. On the colder days, you will find fish partially buried in the mud, which is evident when you land them with muddy bellies. Knowing where bottom structure is will aid you in fishing the productive areas. Wading also helps identify subtle depth contours, which can be an ambush points or a paths in and out of the area, both of which are ideal areas to target trophy trout. Capt. Michael Okruhlik is the inventor of Controlled Descent Lures and the owner of www.MyCoastOutdoors.com.
eavy rains and high water are to be expected over the next few months. It keeps our streams and rivers healthy. But it’s too bad all that precipitation occurs when trout are pulling out of the winter doldrums. When the river is blown out, it’s blown out. There’s no sense in fishing chocolate milk or putting yourself in a dangerous situation. But a little high water doesn’t have to put an end to your fishing. With a little adjustment, fly anglers do quite well when rivers up and a dingy. The change in water conditions can even make large trout less wary. Ride The Wave Sometimes something special happens with the onset of a heavy rain shower on a free-flowing stream. The same is true when turbines start generating on a tailwater. Increasing flows stir up all sorts of morsels for trout to eat, rain knocks bugs out of the trees, and it puts fish in the mood to feed. This phenomenon is fleeting. As waters rise, fish take advantage of the newly arrived bounty, but the situation either stabilizes or flows become unfishable pretty quickly. Typically this bite goes on for a window of less than an hour, depending on the conditions. However, if you find yourself at the right place, at the right time, you could be in for a stellar 20 minutes of streamer fishing. Seek Out The Slack Even in low flows, trout conserve energy by hanging where there’s some sort of current break. When the river is rolling, this behavior is amplified. High water pushes fish up near the banks or into shallow riffles where there is less current. Fish also congregate in eddies, where washed in bugs and baitfish make for easy pickings. Weight Down And Gear Up Adjustments are needed to take advantage of these conditions. High water is no time to fuss with delicate dry flies. Grab your heavy stick and a box of big nymphs and streamers. With visibility beneath the surface diminished, you can afford to beef up to heavier leaders and tippet. Rig up longer than usual with heavy flies and/or some split shot to get down where the fish are. You can also get away with fishing larger flies in dirty water. A larger profile helps fish find your fly. Also—and especially with big browns—trout looking for something meaty to make it worthwhile. Next time the bottom drops out when you’re on the water, hang around instead of hightailing it to the truck. You might as well fish since you’ll be wet by the time you get to the vehicle, anyway. By the same token, don’t let a little high water deter you from going to the river. Sure, you might get skunked, but you might also hang into a hook-jawed bruiser. hen Briarwood Christian School’s Grayson Morris and Tucker Smith went wire-to-wire to bring home the 2019 Mossy Oak Fishing Bassmaster High School National Championship, they became the first high school team to repeat as national champions. From a private school in Birmingham, the duo is now set to add another first to their resume when they become the first high school anglers to fish alongside the pros at the iconic Bassmaster Classic in March. As 53 of the world’s best anglers takeoff to compete on Day 2 of the Bassmaster Classic, they will be led onto the storied waters of Alabama’s Lake Guntersville by Morris and Smith. The high school team will be aboard a specially wrapped boat that Academy Sports + Outdoors has provided for their use during Classic week. “I’m speechless and so thankful,” said Smith. “It is amazing that we’ll be the first high school team in the Classic, and I know we wouldn’t be in this position without the support of our families and coaches.” As the realization set in, the duo immediately began planning how

slot limit for recreationally-caught striped bass went into effect Jan. 1 in North Carolina ocean waters. Fishermen are allowed to possess one striped bass per person per day that is at least 28 inches and less than 35 inches total length (fishermen may not keep a 35-inch fish). The slot limit is required by the recently adopted changes to the Atlantic Striped Bass Interstate Fishery Management Plan. It is designed to end overfishing and bring fishing mortality to the target level in 2020 by reducing total coastwide striped bass removals by 18 percent. The latest coastwide stock assessment determined that ocean migratory Atlantic striped bass are overfished and overfishing is occurring. The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s action also requires a coastwide commercial quota reduction of 18 percent. The recreational regulations for striped bass in internal coastal waters remain unchanged. For more information, contact N.C. to make the most of this rare opportunity. “To be honest, my first thought is how I’m going to catch fish on Guntersville,” said Morris. “I never thought I’d be fishing the Classic this spring, but now I want to make sure I learn from the pros while we have the chance.” After fishing Day 2, Morris and Smith will head 75 miles from Lake Guntersville to Birmingham, where their five-fish bag will be weighed to the cheers of thousands at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex. While the bright lights and big stage of the Classic will be new to the pair, Smith and Morris have already enjoyed a taste of the limelight. The duo appeared as part of a series called Winning Edges—a show produced by high school students to present educational and inspirational video content. And fellow high school anglers can certainly gain inspiration from this talented team. The pair enjoy a long list of accolades off the water in recognition of their dedication to conservation and community service projects. Morris and Smith have worked extensively on managing a private lake in their home state. While Smith has volunteered for years with the Kampfire for the King events benefiting the King’s Ranch and Hannah Home, Morris has done mission work in Haiti, Nicaragua and Guatemala. Smith was one of just 12 young anglers named to the 2019 Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster High School All-American Fishing Team while Morris earned Honorable Mention. The 2020 Bassmaster Classic will be the culmination of 50 years of top-tier tournament bass fishing, and attendees can expect a range of exciting events, coveted giveaways and celebrity appearances during the tournament, which runs March 6-8. Daily launches will take place at Civitan Park in Guntersville, with daily weigh-ins and the annual Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo held in Birmingham at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex. his should come as no surprise to anglers, but a new study has determined that fishery management, when done well, works to keep fisheries sustainable. The study, according to Seafood Source, compiled data from 30 countries around the world and determined that intense fisheries management has led to healthy or improving fish populations. The researchers published their results in a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in January. Only about half the world’s fish populations are monitored scientifically. These monitored and managed populations are generally healthy and growing, while fish populations in regions with weaker fishery management and little monitoring are harvested at rates that are three times higher. This poor management also affects abundance levels, which are half that of intensively managed populations. The study database, which has been in development for the last decade, includes data on about 880 fish populations from around the world, including Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and South America, representing almost half the world’s catch. The data showed that fishing pressure rose and biomass declined for decades until 1995, when fishing pressured started to fall. By 2005, biomass was ticking up again, and by 2016, the average biomass of assessed fish populations was higher than levels needed to produce maximum sustainable yield.

ooker Electric continues driving innovation in the fishing industry. Their top-of-the-line baitwell system is tops for keeping your bait fresh and lively. This system includes Hooker’s patented high-flow baitwell pumps and streamlined design that includes full variable flow that allows anglers to decide how much flow is needed depending on the species of bait they are keeping in the livewell. Also a great choice for the tuna tube setups, the system allows the perfect amount of flow to the tubes. The pumps have an outstanding high flow, measured in 2,500, 4,500 and 7,500 gallons per hour. With the 12 VDC brushless motor system, these pumps are superior to anything else on the market. Completely serviceable and rebuildable, Hooker Pumps are made to last. Another huge feature integrated on the pump system is that they are mounted outside of their custom sea chest. This provides easy access and the ability to change a pump out fast, without taking the entire sea chest apart like the competitors. Hooker Electric’s custom sea chest was specifically designed around their patented pumps. The sea chest is constructed of 316 stainless steel, welded to perfection, and then passivized. Passivization is a non-electrolytic finishing process that makes stainless steel more rust-resistant to avoid corrosion from the saltwater. It is then heavy-duty powder coated for extra protection. The sea chest comes with a ¼-inch rubber gasket seal, stainless steel bolts, washers, a breather valve and acrylic lid that can be custom engraved with the boat’s name or boat manufacturer’s name upon ordering. The crucial benefit of installing Hooker’s sea chest system is simple: less air in your system, especially with step-hull boats. The sea chest allows the boat to pull clean water in and keep air out of the hoses, therefore out of the system. Paired with the sea chest, Hooker has created custom manifolds cut from a solid block of schedule 80 PVC, which ensures longevity and quality. The manifold cleans up the aesthetics on the system by simplifying it and allowing water flow to be dispersed to multiple livewells as needed. The Hooker pump system will keep you ahead of the rest when it comes to live baiting. The company is currently working with leading boat manufactures like Contender Boats, Jupiter, Conch Boats, Winter Custom Yachts, Freeman Boatworks, Intrepid Power Boats, Billfish Boatworks, Tracker Marine, FMC, Yellowfin Yachts, Sea Vee boats, and the system now comes standard in all of the Valhalla boats by Viking. See Hooker Electric’s innovation for yourself at Booth D308 at the Miami Boat Show. For more information, go to hookerelectric.com.

Special Bicentennial Reverse Design
New Hoard Discovered! Full Bags of Eisenhower Bicentennial Dollars
I
n 1975 and 1976, the United States Mint released special Bicentennial Eisenhower Dollars to mark the 200th birthday of our nation. Upon their release in 1975, a family purchased five full bags—5,000 coins in all—and simply stashed them away... until now!
Special Bicentennial Design Normally, the short-lived Eisenhower Dollar displayed a stylized version of the Apollo 11 mission patch on its reverse. But for the nation’s 200th birthday, a new onetime-only design was created, showing the Liberty Bell before an image of the Moon. This temporary design and dual dates of 1776 and 1976 make it a coveted piece that belongs in every U.S. coin collection.
Fresh Out of the Bag! Though each of these coins is more than 40 years old, you wouldn’t know it by looking at them. Each one is still in its original Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition, taken fresh out of a bag from
the Philadelphia Mint that has been sealed for 43 years. They’re just like new!
A Dual-Dated Mystery Curiously, each of the U.S. Mint bags of Eisenhower Dollars are dated 1975. But how can that be, if the coins are dated 1976? To get a jump on the celebration, the mint struck special anniversary U.S. Dollars in both 1975 and 1976. That means that for nearly all Bicentennial Ike collectors, it’s nearly impossible to tell when their coins were struck. But not with these. Thanks to the date on the bag, we can confirm that these Type II Bicentennial Ike Dollars were struck in 1975!
Secure Full Rolls NOW! When this incredible new hoard was announced, we snatched them up as quickly as we could. These coins sell elsewhere for as much as $12.25 each. But now, while our limited supply lasts, we’re offering full 20-coin rolls for as low as $3.50 per coin when you buy three or
more rolls. These Brilliant Uncirculated U.S. Bicentennial Eisenhower Dollars, featuring a special one-time-only design, are guaranteed to have come from a 1975dated U.S. Mint bag! Plus, when you secure two or more full rolls of these historic U.S. Dollars, we’ll include FREE Domestic Shipping. Grab them by the roll while our supply lasts!
