Two roof-mounted aircraft grade anodized aluminum tubes hold two, three or four fully rigged fly rods up to 10’6 in length, and a locking reel housing area easily fits most fly reels. THE BAHAMAS: BEAUTIFUL, DANGEROUS

although great variability exists between the northern and southern islands. This variability is most easily seen on Andros, the largest Bahamian island, where pine forests dominate in the north and give way to more tropical vegetation in the south. The majority of The Bahamas are low lying, with about 80 percent of the islands less than 15 feet above sea level. This, along with the fact that the islands span a great distance in warm tropical waters, make them attractive to tourists, who flock in for beautiful beaches, friendly faces and fantastic fishing. The Bahamas are heavily reliant on tourism, and for many “Family Islands,” angling tourism is vital for their survival. Unfortunately, these geographical traits also make The Bahamas susceptible to flooding and damage from tropical storms and hurricanes. The expansive nature of the islands of The Bahamas is a mixed blessing. Being large means Bahamians are more likely to be impacted somewhere in the chain by severe weather, but it also means many areas will remain untouched. This was the case with Hurricane Dorian, which devastated the two most northern islands, Abaco and Grand Bahama, but left countless others unharmed. The impact from Dorian on Abaco and Grand Bahama is catastrophic, and the outpourings of aid a blessing. One of the best ways to help The Bahamas overcome this tragedy, and future events, is to help the tourism-based economy by travelling to untouched parts of the islands. Fly Fishing for Southeastern Hybrids and Stripers

By Capt. Wayne Moore

A

cross the region, hybrid and striped bass are some of the most exciting gamefish in our reservoirs. Targeting them with flies can be difficult, but it has to be the most exciting way to catch them. Any article written about this subject better mention the name Henry Cowen. Having chased stripers on north Georgia’s Lake Lanier for more than 20 years, Cowen is a pioneer of the specialized techniques and tackle it takes. I fish middle-Georgia’s Lake Oconee, and much of what I do was learned from Cowen. There are differences between the two reservoirs, but I believe similar techniques, patterns and equipment can be adapted to catch stripers and hybrids on any lake. EQUIPMENT I like a 9-foot, 8-weight rod. Scott’s Meridian is my choice, but that model is being replaced by their similar Flex fast-action freshwater, which will probably do the job just as well. Stripers and hybrids pull hard, so you’ll need a decent reel. I use a Lamson Speedstar. It’s not too high end, but it does have a sealed conical drag. For line, I use RIO Intouch Outbound short intermediate most of the time. This allows me to fish both on the surface and below it without having to change spools. OPPORTUNITIES AND TACTICS Topwater: Fly fishing for stripers and hybrids when they are feeding on top is exhilarating. Imagine a school of fish knocking threadfin shad into the air. In some cases they’ll rise every 10 square feet for 30 or 40 feet around your boat. It’s amazing, but it requires specialized conditions. On Oconee, this occurs when water is pumping up from Wallace dam. When water temperatures are warm, it is a brief, first-light bite, but as the water cools it lasts longer. I cast a Cowen’s Somethin’ Else, a wiggle minnow, or a Pop-N-

Fly rig. The Somethin’ Else is my go-to fly. If they are schooling, I approach with as much stealth as possible and make a long cast just beyond and in front of the rising fish. The retrieve is critical. Cowen calls it “feeding the fish.” It is five short strips followed by a pause. If you get bit, get the fish on reel quickly. You’d be surprised how fast charging hybrids can snap a leader. The wiggle minnow is fished differently, same basic cast, but you need to keep the fly moving. Often it’s good to put the rod under your arm and strip with both hands. Gary Dubiel’s Pop-N-Fly is a popping cork for a fly rod. Tie in a feathered, white floating fly behind it, and it is deadly. Chasing Gulls: This usually fires up on Oconee in November and is very good in December. It’s a tactic employed by striper and hybrid fishermen all over the Southeast. While this is a topwater bite, and you will see the gulls dive bombing shad, use the Somethin’ Else exclusively during this time and you will have greater success. Night Fishing: If you like to get up very early or don’t mind fishing at night, darkness may offer the best probability of connecting with a striper or hybrid. Dock lights are key. Approach very quietly and work the outer edges of the light. Again, use intermediate line and Somethin’ Else. Be ready to haul a big fish away from the dock pilings in a hurry. If you get a big striper on, it might require assistance from the trolling motor. Fishing Humps: When the fish are not on top, it’s time to locate humps with your electronics and fish deep. On Oconee, this usually means humps that rise from 30 feet or deeper up to 15 feet. You’ll need sink-tip line for this tactic and a short piece of 12-lb. fluorocarbon leader. Cast past the hump and count down the fly as it drops to the fish. The count will vary depending on the fly and line you’re using. Capt. Wayne Moore owns Oconee On The Fly. BIG TROUT OR EASY TROUT ON THE NANTAHALA DH

Editor’s Note: In honor of delayed harvest trout regulations opening across the Southeast, here’s a look at one of North Carolina’s best. This description of the Nantahala River between Murphy and Bryson City is an abbreviated excerpt from the book “Flyfisher’s Guide to North Carolina & Georgia.”

By Nick Carter

W

easy or difficult as you make it, although frequently the water gets quite high with winter rains. Don’t let heavy flow and a little bit of a stain deter you. Murky water combined with the right nymph or streamer can be the right combination to fool big fish that see a lot of flies. And there are some big fish. North Carolina does a great job of sprinkling trophy-sized individuals in with its stockings. For years, the Nantahala DH was a destination location for me before a move to Graham County just a few miles from the river made it a back-up plan. At the time, I was a wild trout snob. I can’t count the times I drove past easier fishing and larger fish to hike into remote streams where 5-inch fish were the norm. I don’t regret that. It was fun. What I do regret since moving away from Graham County are the Wednesday afternoons I had off work when I passed on the opportunity to fish the DH. I did, however, fish it a lot. What I learned was the fishing can be ridiculously easy for numbers after a stocking, but the better fish require a little work. The river can also be downright difficult once the fish wise up. Showing them either something natural or something out of the ordinary can be productive. Patience is also a virtue. Moving quickly and picking off the eager feeders is a good way to land a bunch of standard hatchery fish. Moving slowly and stealthily, watching the water and carefully picking your casts helps for those larger fish. In a place where almost all the fish come to hand with lip piercings, there are individuals that become reluctant to eat. Egg patterns, Buggers, mop flies and flashy nymphs get the most attention after a stocking. But bugs will be on the water, with winter stones, blue winged olives, midges and maybe some small caddis popping off in sunny spots during winter. Come spring, the river is a riot of bug activity, and dry fly fishing gets very good. At any given time, there might be black and tan caddis, small dark stoneflies, yellow sallies, midges and a variety of mayflies on the water.

Charleston’s October Fishing Forecast

T

By Captain Mark Phelps

here are a lot of great activities to enjoy in the low country in October. Eating fresh local oysters and shrimp is great, but if you like fishing, you must go for the redfish and sea trout—October is the best month for these two local species. October is “crunch” time for Charleston redfish. October brings cooler weather, less humidity and great fishing. This begins the official start of the fall feeding frenzies. The cooler water has all the mullet and shrimp thinking about migrating to the ocean for the winter. That means the bait will be in great numbers and on the move. This causes redfish and sea trout as well as flounder to eat more and more often each day. Not only is the weather nice enough to stay out fishing all day, but also the fish seem to feed all day. Redfish will start forming into schools working the bait as they try to escape. You can find redfish by watching the gulls that hover over the redfish schools hoping for an easy meal. The redfish will bunch up the bait and attack at will. During this time the bait will jump out of the water and the gulls will dive into the water for an easy meal. When the redfish are in this kind of frenzy they will eat almost anything you put in their face. Of course a live finger mullet or shrimp will get eaten; however, I love to throw artificial lures and flies during this time. Top water lures, DOA Shrimp or jerk baits work excellently for this. Any flies that imitate a shrimp or gold flash work well also. The sea trout and flounder will not be as visual as the redfish but eat aggressively and often as well. The sea trout can be found on most current rips and breaks in 4-6 feet of water. Sometimes they

will eat a DOA Shrimp as fast as you can throw it in. I like to drift a DOA Shrimp about 2 feet under a popping cork to find the fish the best. Flounder will be found in good numbers as well. Look for edges of mud flats or sand bars. Flounder will also migrate off shore in the winter so look for them to be on the move to the inlets by the end of the month. October is possibly one of the best months of the year to fish inshore. The weather and fishing are great along with some great local seafood for dinner. A great way to spend the day on the water is to book one of the area’s great guides. Having fished in Charleston for almost twenty three years, I am extremely knowledgeable and experienced in this area. I would love to share my expertise with you on the water. ince Hurricane Dorian stopped in to disrupt our lives we’ve seen the waters around the pier come to life. Large schools of finger mullet have appeared, making perfect fodder for trophy redfish, sea trout, and flounder. Some of the flounder have even approached the 5 pound mark as you can see from Colonel Steve Richards’ photo. Local fisherman commonly refer to the month of October as “Red October” as schools of redfish are prevalent in Col Steve Richards 5 lb 1 oz lowcountry waters this month. Live finger mullet and flounder fresh cut bait are both typically hot baits for these fish. As the temperature continues to cool, the sea trout will become more aggressive. Live mullet or shrimp will produce nice catches of trout and flounder this fall. Whether fished with a simple Carolina rig or under a popping cork, both are very effective ways of landing a nice catch. Lastly, if sheepshead are what you’re looking for the rock pilings surrounding the pier make a perfect habitat. Veteran pier fishermen typically have success using mussels, clams, and fiddler crabs to lure schools of 3-5 pound sheepies with the occasional 8-10 pound monster. Come on out and see what’s biting! Don’t miss the Cast Off Fishing Finale at the Mount Pleasant Pier October 5 from 7am – 2pm. It’s our last fishing tournament of the year and people will take home some great prizes just for entering the tournament. Folly Beach Pier Report October Fishing Forecast By Joey Crawford

J

uly’s big fish story can be titled: Giants in the Shallows!! The cooler weather has brought trout, mackerel, and even bigger reds. As always the hurricane season can take two directions of either calm water or strong northeastern winds that transform the Atlantic Ocean surf into a washing machine. This is unfavorable for the mackerel fishing but great for the drum fishing. Owen Thigpen’s first fish, a These chaotic waters stir up a lot of the Bull Red. Way to go Owen! crabs and crustaceans on the ocean floor giving the drum a cue to feast on the easy meal. Anglers have been tossing shrimp or fiddlers on the bottom with a heavier 3 to 4-ounce weight to counter the strong current. Moving out of the surf and on to the deeper water off the pier diamond... many believe October can be too late for Folly mackerel fishing. Think again my friend!! We’ve seen king mackerel caught off the Folly Pier as late as November with a mild fall. The cooling temperatures will attract kings as they pass through Charleston heading south. We’ve had a few already caught this season and continue to see them hitting top water bait. In addition, their not-so-distant relative, the Spanish mackerel, have been abundant and continue to run when the water conditions are clean. Last but not least, don’t forget the summer fishing challenge ends October 31 and congratulations to all of those who have made the top of the board. -Joey Crawford | jcrawford@ccprc.com

Boating in the Lowcountry

W

Boat Storage Options

here to store your boat is a major consideration when considering the purchase of a boat. Many neighborhoods prohibit boat storage. If you plan to trailer your boat, there are several opportunities for “On Trailer” boat storage in the area. Trailering offers the ultimate flexibility in use of your boat. You have the freedom to visit different boat ramps as well as being able to take your boat on vacation and to have it at home for maintenance and detailing. There are many great Charleston County boat landings. Once you have your storage location determined, you will have to determine if your vehicle is capable of towing the boat that you are considering. Your vehicle manufacturer should be able to provide that information, but be sure that you consider the weight of the boat, trailer, fuel and gear. One disadvantage of trailering is learning how to launch and recover, but our “on water” location gives us the opportunity to demonstrate trailering practices during your orientation. Another disadvantage of trailering is the wait time for launch and recovery and parking, especially during peak times. If you do not want to trailer, then you need to consider dry stack storage or marina. In a dry stack environment, your boat is picked up with a lift and is stored in a rack. You would call for a “launch”, normally with a one-hour notice. Dry stacking has the advantage of keeping the boat out of the water when not in use, usually protected from the elements, especially if it is stored indoors. This means no sleepless nights during that summer evening thunderstorm. Another advantage is that the staff typically fuels the boat and has it ready and waiting for your adventure when you arrive. One disadvantage of dry storage is that the boat is unavailable “after hours”. Of course, if you are a planner, simply ask for the launch before the dry stack closes. Another disadvantage is that there is a certain amount of wear and tear on the hull bottom and the boat gets quite dirty with dirt, dust and diesel soot. Be sure to keep the cover on and prepare for cleaning if you haven’t been on it in a while. Many dry stacks offer flushing services. Be sure that your choice does include this service or be prepared to flush yourself. Boats that are dry stored, typically bring better resale value than those kept in marinas or trailered and stored outside. Keeping your boat in a marina gives you the best option for ease of use, but there are

plenty of drawbacks. Boats stored in the water require bottom painting to protect the hull. This paint will have to be reapplied every 18 months to two years. Furthermore, even with painting, you will have to contract a diver to clean the bottom at least monthly, and maybe more frequently depending on water temperature and current. Furthermore, keeping the boat in the water makes it more vulnerable to damage from storms. It also has the potential to sink if there is a problem with scupper valves or bilge pumps. If stored in the water, you should consider multiple bilge pumps, battery chargers and regular pump maintenance to ensure your boat stays on top of the water. Marina storage offers maximum enjoyment with no restrictions of use, but you must be committed to properly maintain the boat for this continued enjoyment. - Jim Duncan/ Duncan Boats 843-744-2628

Focus on Fishing

Keeping a Good Eye on Your Fishing Rods

W

hen it comes to one of our favorite seasons for inshore fishing in the Lowcountry, we try to anticipate a lot of inshore action targeting Flounder, Spotted Seatrout and Red Drum, which means there will be a lot of wear and tear on our equipment. Having the proper fishing gear for the task is important, like a quality fishing reel, quality fishing line and a quality rod. What I am going to try to help you with today is with something that is usually overlooked or unknown, and that is the eyes or guides on your fishing rods. The guides on a rod are very important. They help with casting distance and the longevity of our fishing lines. There are all kinds of guides this day and age. Some are just stainless steel and have no inserts and some are in all kinds of shapes and styles that have inserts made of different materials, inexpensive inserts like porcelain, and there are other materials that can be used in a highergrade guide, such as silicone carbide, alconite, aluminum oxide, zirconium, etc. Some inserts are made of harder materials than others, which can hold up to enormous friction and pressure without wearing the guide down. This also means that some guides are smoother than others, which again help reduce friction and do not wear the line down while the line is in motion, but what I believe to be very important is the shape of the insert. Some inserts are flat. Higher quality inserts are rounded. The rounded insert allows the line to slide across the guide smoothly on all angles whereas the flat inserts only allow the line to cross smoothly when the rod is straight. When you Flat Insert are purchasing a rod and you happen to look over a number of inexpensive rods, you will notice that they have flat inserts. That is because these inserts are cheaper and are of less quality and these guides will not treat your line well. If you find yourself looking at higher quality rods, you will notice that they usually have quality inserts that are rounded and are good for your fishing line. The reason I said looking for higher quality rods instead of saying more expensive rods is I have noticed lately that there are a number of rod companies that are putting out fairly expensive rods and using low-quality materials, like cheap guides with flat inserts. If an individual is not aware of how inserts and guides work, he or she may end up duped by some of these rod companies, so let’s explain how the differences between a flat guide surface and a Round Insert round guide surface affects our fishing lines. Monofilament and fluorocarbon lines have a memory. A memory means that they often take the shape of a position that the line has been in for a period of time, like the shape of a spring when it is casted off your fishing reel due to the wrapping in a circle around your spool. When monofilament or fluorocarbon takes a sharp turn off a square corner when under pressure or a load, like fighting a strong fish, it retains the memory of the action. I am sure some of us remember our moms or family wrapping Christmas presents, and to make the wrapping of the present fancy, they would take the square edge of a pair of scissors and take a section of ribbon and run it across the scissors. Line lay on Flat Insert After doing so, the ribbon curls into a corkscrew. This is the same effect that a square insert or flat-faced insert has on monofilament and fluorocarbon lines. A rounded insert allows the line to smoothly roll across the guide without that sharp turn, reducing the curling effect and the memory. This also includes friction. But, one would wonder, how does this affect super braided lines that have become very popular? Some braided lines are very smooth because of the type of weave that is incorporated in its construction. Other braided lines have more of a lumpy weave and the surface is similar to the weave of rope, and when using these lines on flat guides versus rounded guides, it can be very noticeable. When casting or retrieving, especially under a load, you will notice 6 CHARLESTON

OCTOBER 2019

CAM_CHAR_10_2019 Final 12 pages.indd 6

By Jiggin Jerry

a humming, grinding sound across your rod. This is due to the slight humps that are in the braid created by the weave. Each hump is scraping against the square edge of the flat insert, creating this annoying, but yet damaging effect. Why do I say damaging? Most braided lines are treated with a coating, almost like a wax, including paint and dye. This is done to help fill the gaps of the braid and allow it to run smoother through the rod guides. On a square edge, the coating is scraped off. You will notice this after a short amount of casts. The color of the line will become lighter very quickly, and as the coating is removed, you will notice the sound of the roughness becoming louder. This means that Line lay on round Insert the line is becoming worn prematurely. Shortly after, you will notice frays and scuffing along the line, as the fibers begin to splinter like little hairs, and with the price of some of these braided lines today, that can be an unwanted development. Whereas quality rounded inserts reduce this friction and scraping tremendously, increasing the longevity of your super braids, allowing your coatings to stay on longer, allowing further casts with less friction. When all of this comes into play, it can make the difference between reaching the fish you are aiming for or landing it. After all, if your new line is not so new any longer due to bad guides, nothing is worse than your line popping in the middle of fighting your personal trophy fish. So, when you have a moment, keep an eye out on your fishing rods. You may discover they are not the eyes you want. I hope this helps everyone with this fall fishing season. Until next time, good luck out there and have fun fishing! To view some fishing adventures, go to my YouTube Channel Fishing With Jiggin Jerry.

Seafood Corner By Chef Kyle Kryske Peel & Eat Shrimp

T

his month we are making peel and eat shrimp served with cocktail sauce. This is a great recipe that can be made hot or cold. Hopefully everyone has a freezer full of shrimp from shrimping season. Ingredients for shrimp: ¼ cup Old Bay ¼ cup Blackened seasoning 2 lemons cut in half 1 onion- large dice ¼ cup minced garlic ½ cup Franks Redhot 1# Shrimp Ingredients/Method of Preparation for Cocktail Sauce: 1 Cup Ketchup ¼ cup horseradish Juice of 1 lemon Juice of 1 Lime 2 tsp Worcestershire 4 shots Tobasco S & P- to taste Method of Preparation for Shrimp: 1. Get a medium sized pot or whatever size pot you think you will need depending on the amount of shrimp you would like to cook. This recipe covers about a pound of shrimp. Put water in the pot and all the

ingredients listed above except the shrimp. Bring the pot to a boil for about 5-10 minutes and let all the ingredients cook together. 2. If you are doing the shrimp chilled you can go ahead and cook them and then just put them in the fridge when they are done. Do not rinse the shrimp when they are done cooking. Just strain them off onto a sheet pan and put them in the fridge until cold. If you are serving them hot go ahead and have your cocktail sauce ready. If you are going to cook multiple batches of shrimp just spoon the shrimp out and reuse the liquid. 3. Now that the water is boiling you can add the shrimp. Stir them with a pair of tongs. Shrimp generally cook in under 5 minutes. It really all depends on how much shrimp you put in the pot compared to the amount of the water so keep that in mind. If you are doing shrimp without heads, just look at where the head should be and you will see if it is done or not. It should be opaque all the way through. However, if they are not done since we are only straining the shrimp they will carry over cook when taken out of the water. I personally like to serve the hot shrimp with melted butter and cocktail sauce. I also like to sprinkle Old Bay and Blackened Seasoning on the shrimp once they come out as well. Enjoy! Lowcountry Kayak Fishing Fall Fishing for Catfish

A

s we roll into October I like to tie on a Santee rig, catch and cut up some fresh mullet or bream and go on the hunt for big Santee Cooper Blues. Believe it or not Blue Catfish are not an indigenous species to the Santee Cooper system; they were introduced in 1964-1965 when some striped bass fry from the Moncks Corner hatchery were traded for 825 blue cats from Arkansas (each weighing about a pound). Anglers that choose to go after these fish stand a good chance at boating some big cats; Blue Catfish weighing 40-45 pounds are common in the Santee Cooper system and the current state record is 109.4 lbs and was caught in the tail race canal. Now fishing for big catfish in a kayak can present a unique series of challenges, from fighting and landing one to hoisting one into your kayak to measure it, these things are much more difficult to do when you are in a 12-13’ long, 30-38 inch wide fishing kayak. So let me give you some tips to make your catfish hunt successful. Tip one would be when going after big cats in a kayak go with a fishing buddy, there is a good chance that if you hook into a beast, you are going to need help in landing and or measuring your prize. Tip two would be fish at night which also makes tip one even more important; although catfish can be caught all day long they are their most active after the sun sets and your chances of landing that trophy cat increases when the sun is below the horizon. Tip number three would be get your bait off the

bottom, though catfish generally feed off the bottom getting your bait just off the bottom helps disperse the scent trail further drawing in the cats from greater distances, this is why the Santee rig is so popular and effective. Tip number four would be don’t anchor down in one place, sure most people picture catfishing as anchoring down over a hole, dropping a line and waiting and waiting… till a catfish takes the bait. If you have been in a spot for more than 20 minutes without a nibble don’t be afraid to move to another spot or slow drift thru a number of spots, more ground covered offers more opportunities to catch a catfish. The last tip I offer is to try different baits; many anglers think that catfish only eat dead decaying stink baits and that is far from the truth. One of my absolute best days going after catfish was with fresh caught bream cut in half and put on a big circle hooked Santee rig. Catfish strike hard, make long powerful runs and pound for pound are one of the strongest fish you can catch in freshwater; with a little planning and preparation you stand a good chance at landing a trophy catfish this fall. The LKA angler of the year target species for October is catfish and the identifier will be released on the evening of 30 September. Tight Lines Mike Kohler LKA Tournament Director

Towing & Trailer Wellbeing

A

s summer winds down, its time to consider your trailers wellbeing. The only purpose our trailers serve in most cases, is to get our equipment to the job sight, our families to the campsites, boats to the water, etc. Trailers need to be maintained. Maintenance varies of course. I like to take the “front to back” and “top to bottom” approach. This approach, I find gives the best results because it prioritizes. The most important, the “front”, includes the coupler which is the connection to the tow vehicle’s hitch, the safety chains or cables and the electrical plug. All components should be inspected before each use and electric brakes if it applies. There are other aspects related to the electrical system that usually require professional attention. We can touch on those items later. The trailer’s suspension represents the “bottom” on our list. Tires and wheels need constant attention. Check tire for correct air pressure and irregular wear and wheels for excessive corrosion or damage. Also included are the suspension components. Leaf spring suspensions require special attention due to the variety of components. The hubs ana bearings as well need constant attention. Just try to remember that your trailer, no matter the use, is an extension of your tow vehicle, and just like your tow vehicle require specific maintenance. f you are not fishing this month, you should be. I know that this time of the year there are a lot of things going on with : school, hunting and college football, but the inshore fishing is on fire right now. With shorter days and water temperature starting to cool down, the fish are feeding like crazy with the abundance of bait and stocking of some weight for winter. Tons of bait in the creeks right now and shrimp and mullet have been easy to get with a casting net anywhere near low tide. High water we have mostly been fishing creek mouths and points throwing popping corks with live bait underneath with a 18-30’ leader, and doing really well with : trout, small reds, bluefish and ladyfish. When the bait thieves have been thick we have been substituting live bait with DOA shrimp and Zman soft plastics under the corks, with both producing some quality fish. Low water we are working Carolina rigs around structure like docks, oyster beds and rock walls targeting : redfish, black drum, and flounder. Finger mullet and mud minnows have been working well for flounder sometimes with a slow retrieve along the bottom, chunks of fish and crab have been working well for the larger redfish and black drum in the creeks. We have not been using much shrimp on the bottom because too many bait stealers around. The mullet run has started and the front beach is alive, with large schools of big mullet cruising just outside the surfline with tarpon, sharks, and redfish exploding on them. The nearshore reef bite has been good with good numbers of weakfish, blues , and ladyfish. We have mostly been using jigs bouncing along or near the bottom on the edges of the reef. Tight lines and remember take a kid fishing.

FLY FISHING’S

WARMWATER REVOLUTION By Nick Carter

T

here’s a brutish undercurrent gaining momentum in fly fishing. Whether it’s river-run striped bass, muskie or carp, long-rodders are targeting freshwater’s most powerful fish. Here are a few destinations where you can get in on the action. James River Photo courtesy of Matt Miles Muskie, Virginia The James River is one of the few rivers in the east that supports a fishable wild muskie population. Guide Matt Miles eagerly pointed out that most of the fish they catch, the 35- to 42-inchers, were spawned wild in the upper James. He said the monster 50-inchers might have originally come from the hatchery, but they still prowl the river, ready to give anglers the adrenaline rush of a lifetime. Between Iron Gate and Lynchburg, Va., more than 80 miles of the James are considered muskie water. The relatively shallow pool and riffle habitat is uniquely suited to hunting freshwater’s biggest, toothiest fish with a fly rod. But muskie fishing isn’t for everyone. Casting waterlogged, 14-inch-long streamers on sinking lines with 10- and 11-weight rods is a workout. Doing it all day in hope of a single take requires mental fortitude. Peak muskie season is October through mid-March.

Saluda & Congaree River Striper, South Carolina Each spring, South Carolina striped bass go on the move. From the Santee-Cooper Lakes between Columbia and Charleston, fish run some 60 miles up the Congaree and arrive in Columbia to spawn in April. By early May they push into the lower Saluda, where they spend the summer in the cold-water refuge of a 10-mile stretch of tailwater. Jake Howard, of Saluda Valley Guides, tapes his thumbs during the June through August heart of the striper season because they become raw from lipping fish. He told of huge numbers of stripers and said 60-fish days are possible for anglers who can lay out line with a 10-weight rod and 350-grain sinking lines. The standard fish weighs 4 to 8 pounds, but 20-, 30- and even 50-pounders are caught each season. Catawba Chain Carp, North Carolina More than 15 years ago, Capt. Paul Rose left the Texas coast with his flats skiff in tow. He settled in the North Carolina Piedmont, far from the salt marshes he loves. But he found a new passion in the clear Catawba River lakes between Asheville and Charlotte, N.C. In the shallows, he watched carp tailing like redfish. The fishing style that arose is a lot like sight casting to bonefish. Rose poles anglers over clear-water flats, searching for pods of carp rooting and feeding. Many clients hire Rose to practice before a trip to the Bahamas. They return because carp are so much fun. Fish from 3 pounds up to 20 pounds call for a 6- or 7-weight rod. The peak season on impoundments like Lake Norman and Lake James runs from May through September. Nick Carter is the author of “Flyfisher’s Guide to North Carolina & Georgia.” It is available on Amazon.com, and autographed copies are available by emailing the author at nsc8957@gmail.com. n enormous 40-pound, 6-ounce brown trout caught at Lake Taneycomo in southwest Missouri is a new state record and just a couple pounds shy of the IGFA all-tackle world record. Bill Babler, a veteran fishing guide from Blue Eye, Mo., caught the monster brown on Sept. 4 using a pink Berkley plastic worm. He caught it on 6x tippet, which equates to less than 4-pound test, making his catch 2 ounces heavier than the current IGFA 4-pound line class record. The previous state record, set just seven months, weighed 34 pounds, 10 ounces. It was also caught at Lake Taneycomo. Babler told the Springfield News-Leader he’d only been out fishing for a few minutes when he caught his new state record. “As soon as I set the hook it came to the top and I knew we had a good fish on,” Babler told the newspaper. “We positioned the boat in an unobstructed area. It was pulling drag pretty good!” Babler attempted to keep the behemoth alive in an aerated tank, but unfortunately the trout died before it could be released. Fisheries Biologist Shane Bush said the fish was eight or nine-years-old. For more information on Missouri state-record fish, visit the MDC website at https://short.mdc.mo.gov/Z3t.

Ultimate Control For Saltwater Fishing Boats The Dometic Group Introduces New Optimus Electric Steering Actuator

S

altwater anglers who fish aboard today’s large center console fishing machines and other high-performance outboard powered boats will soon be able to experience a new level of precision steering and vessel control. The Dometic Group is introducing its new Optimus Universal Electric Steering Actuator. Incorporating proprietary technology and several new components designed and manufactured by Dometic, this new actuator is built exclusively for use with its Optimus Joystick and Electric Power Steering Systems. About the same size as the Dometic Tournament Cylinder, the Optimus Electric Steering Actuator mounts directly on the outboard in place of the present hydraulic cylinder. With its powerful drive train, integrated proprietary position sensors and embedded electronics, it eliminates the need for separately mounted hydraulic actuators used in the Optimus Joystick and EPS systems. This means no more Pump Control Module, no more hydraulic pump, no more hoses, hydraulic cylinders and fluid, and no more purging the system. “We are continually inventing ways to make boat building more efficient and boating more enjoyable,” said Eric Fetchko, President of Dometic Marine Americas. “Once again, we have taken marine steering to the next level. You have my word that we will never stop innovating and solving industry problems.” In terms of performance underway, ease of installation and seasonafter-season reliability, the new Optimus Electric Steering Actuator will provide substantial benefits to boat builder and skipper alike. With the present system, the signal from the Optimus electronic helm goes to the Pump Control Module, which activates an electro-hydraulic steering system. Even though it is “by-wire,” hydraulic fluid is still pumped through hoses and into the steering cylinders on the outboard(s) which act on the tiller arms of the outboards to move left or right. With the new Optimus Electric Steering Actuator, the electronic helm signal goes directly to the actuator which instantly moves the outboard. The “brains” of the Pump Control Module, including ECM, rudder position circuit and CANbus communication, have been

transplanted into the new Optimus Electric Steering Actuator itself. Steering power is delivered by a proprietary high-torque high-efficiency brushless DC electric motor, designed and manufactured by Dometic, and a patented compact roller-screw drive system, also a proprietary Dometic design. Both the motor and power train reside within the steering actuator. In terms of steering performance, skippers will sense a marked improvement in handling. Steering response will be immediate, smooth and precise, thanks to this robust, industry-leading drive train that provides unparalleled performance and system rigidity when needed most. Programmable steering settings, including adjustable speed-sensitive lockto-lock turns, adjustable speed sensitive wheel effort, and speed-sensitive rudder angle limits to ensure safe steering, continue to be available, now without the need for any extra components. Installation of the new system is a snap, with just three CANbus connections plus power. Twin, triple and quad outboard installations will be set up similar to the present design, with Optimus Electric Steering Actuators controlling adjacent outboards via tie-bars. In addition, the new Electric Steering Actuator will interface with compatible autopilot systems in the same manner as the present Optimus systems. Dometic’s SeaWays Autopilot and SeaStation GPS Anchoring functionality are also built in. The Dometic Optimus Electric Steering Actuator exceeds all applicable marine standards, including NMMA, ABYC, CE and SAE electrical and environmental requirements. The actuators are maintenance free, except for regular greasing of the steering ram via installed zerk fittings. Over 100,000 hours of rigorous testing during development assures safe and reliable performance under harsh salt and freshwater conditions, all in keeping with Dometic’s proven reputation for superior quality. He’ll typically kick the morning off with redfish encounters in depths of 2 feet or less. As the sun grows stronger, he’ll probe docks and structure looking for summer flounder before finishing off with feisty seatrout in feeder creeks. “I’m thinking this season will be a special one if we don’t get smacked by any major storms,” said Collins. “There’s tons of bait around already, and it’s been a long time since I’ve seen as many mullet as we have this year. Crabs and small menhaden are abundant, too. Plus we have tons of shrimp; everything loves shrimp.” By Tom Schlichter Collins targets early morning reds around oyster bars, oyster reefs and oyster rocks in water that is generally hip-deep or less. He’ll work shoal areas and Seatrout: Dale Collins puts a fare even dig into the grass on White Oak Sound, White Oak River and the area on a pretty Oak River area sea trout. Photo courtesy of Do or Die surrounding Swansboro with a 7-foot, 6- to 10-pound class Star Seagis rod. His Charters, Swansboro, N.C. lure of choice for the reds is a Skitter Walk SW11 in a golden mullet pattern that always seems to bring surface thrills. Backing off the edges and working near docks and structure, he’ll switch to a ¾-ounce white Spro bucktail tipped with a 4-inch Berkley Gulp! pearl-white shrimp for the flatties. “For the reds,” disclosed Collins, “I keep a second rod rigged with a Z-Man soft plastic or Gulp! Jerk Shad impaled on a weedless screw-style hook. If a redfish blows up on the topwater but misses, I immediately send the soft plastic his way. He’ll slam that as soon as it starts to sink.” For flounder, Collins hops his bucktail about a foot at a time, but it’s vital you actually feel it strike bottom on the drop. “Most hits come as the lure falls, and if you don’t feel it hit bottom it’s probably in a fish’s mouth,” he said. “Strike immediately, because those flounder spit a lure out quickly once they realize it’s a fake.” As for the specks, Collins recommends getting on them as soon as possible. “You’ll find the biggest fish arrive first,” he said. Throw a Mirrolure MR 17 or ou’ve got to love fall’s promise here in North Carolina,” said Capt. Dale 18, or try my personal favorite: a Zoom Golden Bream on a 1/16-ounce jighead. Collins, of Fish or Die Charters (www.fishordiecharters; 252-422- Man can that lure catch some fish! Just work it slow and allow time for it to get 4236) in Swansboro, North Carolina. “The water temperatures are down deep. If you think you are fishing slowly enough, slow down a little more.” starting to cool and there’s plenty of red drum, flounder and big seatrout in our bays and creeks. Indeed, it’s my favorite time of year to fish around here.” If you’d like to fish the Swansboro area on your own, Collins suggests Collins should know. He’s built a reputation putting fares on big fish in launching from Cedar Point Wildlife Ramp near Dudley’s Marina (https:// skinny water in this area west of Morehead City and separated from Pamlico www.dudleysmarinanc.com; 252-393-2204) in Swansboro. SIGHT CASTING TO LOUISIANA’S BIG BULL REDS ON THE FLY

Photo courtesy of Michael Booth Jr.

I

t’s no secret that the Louisiana coast is an inshore angler’s dream. A seemingly endless tangle of interconnected waterways, with big salt lakes, canals, grass, oysters and mud flats make the bayous south of New Orleans the No. 1 destination in the world for redfish. Places like Grand Isle, Cocodrie, Venice, Delacroix and Hopedale are the destinations for redfish anglers seeking out some of the best fishing on the planet. The region is filthy with reds, and targeting big bulls with a fly rod is the ultimate thrill. Angler Michael Booth Jr. and his buddies, many who are local captains, have made a practice of sight fishing these monsters. Instead of working the grass to find individual bulls or pods of slotsized redfish, they move out deeper on the big lakes in search of

schools of big bulls, which usually hunt in the 3- to 4-foot depths 100 to 200 yards off the grass. “The weather has to be good for a couple weeks beforehand for the water to be clean enough to see them,” said Booth “When we go out looking for schools of big fish, we start about 20 yards out and pole that line until we figure out where the reds are holding that day. Then they’ll usually all be in that same area.” On certain special days, when a strong northeast wind and a low tide suck the water out of the marsh around Hopedale, those 4-foot depths become 2 feet and spotting fish is easy. “Those big bulls will all be belly crawling with their backs out of the water,” said Booth. But normally, finding fish means looking for the telltale dark triangles of tails and fins or fish pushing water as they chase bait and root for crabs. Booth said a good pair of green-mirror glasses with amber lenses makes it easier to distinguish the shadows and colors of a big redfish in tannic-stained water. Once you find them, tempting them to eat a fly is a matter of trial and error to find the fly and retrieve they want on a given day. Booth prefers fishing on top, and a size 2 Surface Seducer Double Barrel popper is the hot bait at the moment. Booth likes purple, gold, chartreuse, black and combinations of those colors. Sometimes, when the fish aren’t feeding as actively, Booth said he’s forced to fish something that sinks. A size 2 shrimp pattern with extra large dumbbell eyes becomes the bait of choice. Again, purple and chartreuse work well, as do more natural tan or olive patterns. A 10-weight rod, floating line and a 50-40-30 leader with 12 to 18 inches of 16- to 20-pound tippet are in order. Booth said he’s seen days that brought 10 fish over 20 pounds to the rail and others when a single 40-pound red was reason for rejoicing. “Any day you’re able to catch a 20-plus-pound bull red on a fly is pretty awesome,” he said.
