here’s no experience in fly fishing like standing on the deck of a skiff and watching for shadows that belie cruising fish. Sight casting saltwater flats is a pursuit that lies somewhere between biggame hunting and angling. For many anglers it is the ultimate expression of the sport. The following are four destinations that offer some of the best flats fishing in the world. Whether you seek the visceral thrill of leaping tarpon, the bone-jarring speed of giant trevally or the finesse and skill it takes to hook bonefish and permit, these places should be part of every angler’s bucket-list.

The Bahamas

No other island chain in the world has so completely associated itself with a single species of fish as the Bahamas. This 1,000-mile-long archipelago is bonefish heaven, and it has supported generations of famous fly fishing guides on more than 500 square miles of mostly hard-bottomed flats. There’s a reason the Bahamas are so famous for bonefishing. From Grand Bahama and the Abacos in the north all the way down to Long Island and Acklins in the south, there are more than 700 islands. Each little cay supports its own flats, which all offer perfect habitat for bones and perfect environs for fly fishing. Another great thing about bonefishing the Bahamas is easy access to the fishery. The islands are a quick hop from southern Florida, and every inhabited island has its own bonefish lodges. From swanky resorts to beachfront huts, there’s something for every type of angler, and the fishing is varied as well. Whether you seek the challenge of big wary fish or you’d rather have fun catching numbers, you’ll find it somewhere in the islands—and Bahamian guides are legendary for their skill and hospitality.

Seychelles

Out in the middle of the Indian Ocean off the east coast of Africa, the Seychelles are an

archipelago of 115 islands that offer some of the most remote and beautiful flats in the world. With a strictly managed fishery, the atolls of the Seychelles are teeming with fish, and the out islands offer flats that few anglers have ever seen. It’s one of the few remaining destinations where the fishing experience cannot be oversold. Bonefish are big, numerous and lightly pressured, so they will readily take a fly. But traveling anglers should go geared up for multiple other exciting flats inhabitants. From high-flying milkfish to powerful giant trevally, there’s really no place on the planet that offers such a diverse and exotic cast of characters. And you’ll be sight fishing for all of them, either wading or poling gorgeous shallow-water flats.

Belize

If permit are your passion, you’d be hard pressed to find a better place to chase them than Belize. This little English-speaking nation,

wedged in on the Caribbean between Mexico and Honduras, lays claim to what just might be the world’s best permit fishery. Belize is small. You could fit the entire country within Florida six times, and its population density is the lowest in all of Central America. These statistics explain the unspoiled nature of Belize’s forests, flats and beaches. Punta Gorda, on the southern coast, is the headliner destination for permit devotees. Yes, there are opportunities for tarpon, snook, bonefish and jacks, but the abundance and size of permit is astounding. Now, that abundance doesn’t make individual permit any easier to catch. It does, however, mean an angler will have numerous shots to get everything just right, which is a necessity when it comes to hooking permit on a fly.

The Florida Keys

No such list would be complete without mention of the Keys. The Florida Keys are the birthplace of backcountry fly fishing, and for decades the waters within the Gulf-side curve of this island chain have provided some of the best shallow-water fishing in the world. The more than 1,000-square-mile expanse of Florida Bay is a vast shelf lagoon, where bays, channels, flats and small islands exist in the mix of warm Gulf waters and freshwater seeping in from the Everglades. A skiff with a captain opens up a world of mud and grass flats to spot and cast to fish. Even an angler in a kayak could explore the mazes of mangrove islands. And there’s no telling what fish you might encounter. The summertime tarpon run is legendary. Bonefish and ever-difficult permit cruise the flats. Big snook and redfish are also potential sight-fishing targets. It’s a place where even big sharks have been known to take a fly. From the eastern United States, the Florida Keys are a no-hassle flats experience, and the fishing can be spectacular.

very river is its own enclosed ecosystem. The specifics rarely translate from one fishery to the next when it comes to trout fishing. But there’s at least one thing you can count on when the first cold fronts roll in and autumn leaves color the banks of our mountain trout streams: the fishing will be good. The small window between hot summer and cold winter is a trout’s opportunity to fatten up for the lean months. But nature is not kind. Fall does not bring massive hatches of meaty mayflies like spring. Feeding opportunities can be sparse, which forces trout to be opportunistic. It is advantageous for anglers. Here are some general guidelines to remember when you’re fishing for trout in fall: 1) Conditions: Although water temperatures are cooling, levels remain low and clear in most streams. This makes trout wary. Wade stealthily and use longer, thinner leaders to avoid spooking fish.

2) Meat Theory: Trout pack on weight in fall, particularly brown trout, which are also fueling up for the spawn. Consider fishing larger flies than you normally would to give them a mouthful they can’t refuse. Streamers target the largest, most aggressive fish in a run. Large articulated streamers might seem outlandish, but they’re the deal if you’re willing to sacrifice numbers for size. Use a loop knot to tie streamers to tippet, it’ll give your fly more

action, and consider an intermediate sinking line or a sink-tip to get your streamers down. Fluorocarbon leaders are also a good idea for stripping big streamers or drifting heavy stonefly nymphs through deep holes. Fluorocarbon sinks, and its abrasion resistance helps your rig stand up to the rock and wood you’ll encounter. 3) Spawning Browns: Brown trout run upstream to spawn this time of year. That means big browns show up in places you wouldn’t normally expect. Go ahead and fish the deep undercut at the tail-out of a pool, but look to the head of the run, too. There might be a giant butterbelly up in the riffles getting ready to move up the creek.

4) Dry Flies: If you just have to fish a dry fly, most of the topwater action will go on in the afternoon and evening. Terrestrials that carried fish through the summer are still a primary food source until the first hard frost. Be sure to carry hoppers, beetles and ants. Some areas see hatches of October Caddis, also called Autumn Sedge. These big orange bugs are mostly nocturnal, but trout will be looking for them. Other than that, most fall insect life is small. Blue-winged olives and midges are what trout rise to when cool weather settles in. Bring your box of size 18-24 BWOs and Griffith’s Gnats. Try fishing them behind a large, high-floating attractor pattern so you can track those tiny flies on the water.

BULL REDFISH On theFly I

t’s a special time of year for anglers who specialize in redfish on fly tackle. For the next couple of months, bull reds from the Carolinas to the Texas Gulf Coast will be on the move. Invigorated by cooling waters and the spawn, they run inshore to stack up in the passes and along the beaches. They’ll even push up into the marshes to feed with their smaller cousins. It’s the time of year to trade your 7-weight fly rod for a 9-weight, because the chance of hooking into a 20- to 40-pound redfish is better now than at any other time. In the South Carolina Lowcountry, big reds are herding adult shrimp on shallow mud flats. In the world famous Louisiana bayous, bulls are visible cruising and crunching crabs on the bottom. All along the Gulf and southern Atlantic coasts, anglers seek diving birds with binoculars. The schools of hungry redfish pushing baitfish from beneath are primed and ready to eat a fly. Those new to saltwater fly fishing will find that redfish are a very good place to start. Although the pursuit requires some stealth in terms of boat handling or wading, the fish are not leader shy and rarely spook at errant casts or line hitting the water. These are not wary bonefish that run from shadows. Catching red drum does require quick, accurate casts, but this time of year generally provides anglers with numerous shots at fish. One of the great thing about reds is they are aggressive and opportunistic feeders. Fly selection is a matter of matching the predominant forage where

you’re fishing, but generally they will eat most anything that runs away. Crab, spoon, shrimp and baitfish patterns all work, and the local fly shop will clue you in to the top producers. These flies are frequently tied in highly visible colors with flash and rattles. The key is put your fly in front of a redfish and then get its attention. You have to provide action for the fish to take notice, and seeing a fish react to your bait is extremely exciting. It’s one of the things that make reds on a fly so much fun, even for veterans of the mud flats. As a rule, you’ll want to keep the fly moving with short, quick strips. Let sinking flies bounce on the bottom to kick up mud. Whether it’s a waking dorsal fin, the violent parting of marsh grass or a shadow streaking across the bottom, you’ll know it when a big redfish homes in on your fly. At that point, you can slow it down, but keep that bait twitching. Let the rattles, flash and undulating feathers do their work. Strip-set hard on the take and PHOTOS BY NICK CARTER let the fish put a bow in the rod before giving another jolt to make sure the hook is home. You’ll soon realize why you needed a large arbor reel with a smooth drag and 100 yards of backing. A 20-pound bull red is going to seriously test a 9-foot leader tapered from 40 down to 15 or 20 pounds. It’s the kind of struggle that’ll bring you back for more.

he habits you bring to the boat can be as important as all the gear and knowledge in the world when it comes to catching fish. Whether you’re the guy with a new boat just figuring it out or a seasoned tournament captain whose main duty is to shout at the crew, developing good routines and fishing with the right mindset leads to better days on the water.

Here are a few tips that might help:

Get Organized. We all know the gear guy who loads everything and the kitchen sink in the boat. We’ve also been with this same guy when the last 8/0 circle hook breaks off in a big gag grouper. He’s got a fresh pack of 4/0 hooks under the seat from the last time he went scamp fishing with sardines, but that just won’t do for the big pinfish in the baitwell. You’re left looking in the cup holders for an appropriate hook while the fish are down there waiting to be caught. Keeping your tackle—and all your other gear—well organized makes you a better angler because you’ll have what you need when you need it. Pre-rig leaders and ready the gear you plan to use the night before a trip. Check the latest reports, gather local intel, follow the weather and use a service like Sirius XM’s Fish Mapping to keep up with what’s going on before you leave the dock. Having a plan puts you on the fish quicker so you’ll be there when the bite turns on. But offshore fishing is also about adapting to circumstances on the water. The best anglers recognize and react to opportunities as they arise. This requires planning for what might happen on top of what is expected. Make sure you’ve got rigs, tackle and lures handy for when bottom fishing becomes chasing birds. Keep It Simple. Whether you’re trolling or sinking baits, know the limits of your crew. More lines in the water does not always equate to more fish on the deck. It takes an experienced and aware bunch of anglers to deploy and man complicated trolling spreads. Even a simple drop can come confusing when there are multiple fish on the line and unmanned rigs on the rails. One of the best ways to have an enjoyable and productive day on the water is to spend less time untangling snarls and more time fishing. Knowing how to avoid aggravation and wasted time is a skill in itself, and the first step is to keep it simple.

Classic Fall redfish on fly!

here are a lot of great activities to enjoy in the low country in October. Eating fresh local oysters and shrimp is great, but if you like fishing, you must go for the redfish and sea trout— October is the best month for these two local species. October is “crunch” time for Charleston redfish. October brings cooler weather, less humidity and great fishing. This begins the official start of the fall feeding frenzies. The cooler water has all the mullet and shrimp thinking about migrating to the ocean for the winter. That means the bait will be in great numbers and on the move. This causes redfish and sea trout as well as flounder to eat more and more often each day. Not only is the weather nice enough to stay out fishing all day, but also the fish seem to feed all day. Redfish will start forming into schools working the bait as they try to escape. You can find redfish by watching the gulls that hover over the redfish schools hoping for an easy meal. The redfish will bunch up the bait and attack at will. During this time the bait will jump out of the water and the gulls will dive into the water for an easy meal. When the redfish are in this kind of frenzy they will eat almost anything you put in their face. Of course a live finger mullet or shrimp will get eaten; however, I love to throw artificial lures and flies during this time. Top water lures, DOA Shrimp or jerk baits work excellently for this. Any flies that imitate a shrimp or gold flash work well also. The sea trout and flounder will not be as visual as the redfish but eat aggressively and often as well. The sea trout can be found on most current rips and breaks in 4-6 feet of water. Sometimes they will eat a DOA Shrimp as fast as you can throw it in. I like to drift a DOA Shrimp about 2 feet under a popping cork 2 CHARLESTON

Mt. Pleasant Pier Fishing Forecast For October By Chris Pounder

f September is any indication of how fishing will go in October, Lowcountry anglers are in for a treat. We’ve already seen a 6-pound 9 oz flounder, a 10-pound sheepshead, and lots of redfish. Large schools of finger mullet have appeared, making perfect fodder for trophy redfish, sea trout, and flounder. At the lower tides we’ve seen schools of reds in the flat to the north leading to multiple hook ups at the same time. Many of the anglers getting in on the action are first timers or relatively new pier fishermen which Robert Ozaeta with a nice Redfish make the results much more exciting. Local fishermen commonly refer to October as “Red October” and the action started early this year. Live finger mullet and fresh cut bait are the go-to options this time of year for reds. As the temperature continues to cool, the sea trout and flounder will become more aggressive. One of my favorite times to get out and fish is right after the first couple of cool evenings. When the temperature drops it’s like the dinner bell for many species so you’ll want to have some live mullet, shrimp, or dust off your favorite artificials to throw. Whether fished with a simple Carolina rig or under a popping cork, all three options are effective ways of landing a nice catch. Tracy Gatlin’s 10 lb Sheepshead Lastly, if sheepshead are what you’re looking for the rock pilings surrounding the pier make a perfect habitat. Veteran pier anglers typically have success using mussels, clams, and fiddler crabs to lure schools of 3-5-pound sheepies. If you’re lucky and/or patient you may run into something much bigger. In fact, we recently had a fisherman on his first trip to the pier land a 10-pounder. As fish tales go, there are even bigger ones out there that escaped the net and are just waiting for their turn as social media stars. Hope to see you out here in October! Fifty Years of Fun for Families The Story of Duncan’s Boats - By Jim Duncan

his year, Duncan’s Boats is celebrating 50 years helping Lowcountry families enjoy Charleston’s beautiful waterways. Larry Duncan, my father, began building boats in our garage in the early sixties and eventually worked his way into retail, running the retail outlet for Renken Boats and eventually opened their dealership on Highway 61, Afloat and Afield. In 1970, he ventured out on his own, opening Boat City on River’s Avenue. Of course, growing up in the family business meant working there after school and during the summers. In those days, we ordered boats from boat builders, but we had to hang and install the engine, route the steering cables and pullies and install the controls, ignition and gauges. Trailers came in a stack of frames with boxes of springs, tongues, winches, bolts and all of the other required pieces for us to assemble at the dealership. Needless to say, there was a lot of work involved getting a boat ready for the customer. To this day, I have

no idea how we made a living after buying a 16’ Cacci Craft, 55 hp Chrysler, a trailer and then rigging it all up, just to sell it for $1,887. In 1977, Dad attended the Chicago Boat Show, looking for a new boat brand. There, he found Bayliner. In the early eighties, Bayliner revolutionized the marine industry by packaging the boat, motor and trailer, completely rigged and ready to go. Bayliner became the largest manufacturer of recreational boats in the world, offering Capri runabouts, Trophy fishing boats and Ciera Cruisers. This wide offering allowed Duncan’s to ride the wave and concentrate on its core, families. As a part of Brunswick Corporation, we appreciate that Bayliner continues to build value oriented, quality boats for families. I remember in those early days going out on the boat with my father and launching at the County Farm Boat Landing, before I-526 was built. Dropping a rock and string for a depth finder around the area he said, “Son, that would be a great place for a marina.” Not long after the Mark Clark Expressway opened, he purchased the adjacent property to build his dream dry stack marina, one of the first in Charleston, opening in 1987. Many will remember it was destroyed by Hugo just two years later. After getting my degree from Clemson in engineering in 1983, 6 CHARLESTON

I left home to work and raise a family in Winston-Salem, NC, knowing that one day I’d return to take over the family business. In 1996, I did just that. Dad had a three-year training plan and, just as

planned, he retired in 1999. I managed it for him until I purchased the dealership in 2006. It was at that time he sold the marina to another company, which provided for his retirement. In 2002, we felt that we needed a more upscale line for the more discriminating buyer and found Regal Boats. The Kuck family started Regal in 1969 and like Duncan’s Boats, they were second generation owned and concentrated on families. Regal builds performance luxury bowriders, deck boats, cruisers and yachts. With the popularity of center consoles on the rise in the area, in 2013, we felt that we needed to branch out into saltwater fishing boats. We decided to partner with Tidewater Boats, a well built and respected South Carolina boat manufacturer with a long heritage of fish boat building. Through the years we’ve also experienced some rough seas. There was gas rationing in the early seventies, Hurricane Hugo in the eighties, the naval base closure in the nineties and recession in the 2000s. Then, earlier this year, my father passed away due to an aneurism, while we were planning our 50th anniversary celebration. He never knew that Covid-19 would eventually cancel our party plans. I know he was proud of what he envisioned and created and he knew the future was in good hands.

Fall Wahoo Hunting - By Capt. Drew Demaree

all is finally here, one of my favorite times of the year to go offshore fishing. This time of year also brings a good consistent wahoo and tuna bite. Somebody say WAHOO? Just so happens that wahoo is my favorite meat fish to fight, catch and eat. Let’s talk about wahoo! On a typical day when I am targeting wahoo I like to troll along the ledge because wahoo are very structure orientated. The ledge provides many drop offs and rock mounds that attract bait fish and other bottom dwellers living amongst live bottom. Pay close attention to your sounder when looking for schools of baitfish and larger wahoo marks along the ledge. Wahoo are a mid water column fish and typically run in small packs. So where there’s one, there’s more! When the wahoo are chewing, a good day can bring upwards of 10- 15 wahoo strikes. Catching them is a different story. I like to start the day pulling 3 to 4 highspeed lures trolling around 10-14 knots. This enables you to cover more ground for a couple quick rips down the ledge to get that first morning bite. For my high speed spread, I’ll have two-bullet shape

lures with trolling weights on the corners. Just beyond the trolling weights I’ll pull two of my custom cup face Head Striker lures, one out of the chair and the other off the bridge in the shotgun position. I rig my lures with 10/0 double hook sets on cable. After the morning bite slows down, I will pull an 8 rod bait spread going 5-6 knots. For my ballyhoo rigs I use Ilanders and chuggers on 130 lb. single strand wire with an 8/0 mustad hook. One of my favorite baits for wahoo is a deep, dark colored Ilander on a planer. On some days when the bite isn’t on top the planer rod can be the day maker. When hooked up it’s really important to keep the boat moving by alternating the gears. If the fish feels any slack in the line it will turn its head pealing off line and likely throwing the hook. So get out there while the bite is good and go make some striped memories. October Reds - By Jiggin’ Jerry

s we move into October, it has always been a long time favorite for large Red Drum to be one of our primary targeted game fish amongst our local inshore fishermen. The Red Drum this time of year have also become a favorite for a lot of tourists that have experienced fishing for these big bulls along the Carolina coast and usually cannot help planning an annual trip to do it all again. So why October? October is the month that large Red Drum exceeding 40 inches move along our beach fronts in large schools, and if you are fishing in the right spot at the right time with the right bait accompanied by the right gear, you could very well land yourself one as nice as a 53-inch big bull Red Drum. So, for those of you that have not experienced fishing for these large Red Drum this time of year, you might be wondering—where do I need to be to find these fish? Do I have to have a boat or be on a boat to get to them? What size rod and reel would I need? And the biggest question of all—what kind of bait should I use? The first question—where can I find the fish? These fish will be located off of our local beaches. One of the most popular beaches is Folly Beach, but there are a number of locations along our southern coast that one could easily look up on the Internet that should produce some nice fish. The second question—do I have to have a boat? No, you do not have to have a boat to target these fish. Most of these fish are taken this time of year by surf fishing or pier fishing, but if you do have means to a boat, taking one out to our local jetties or some of our local estuaries will still produce some beautiful fish. The third question—what size rod and reel would I need? The rod and reel style will depend on the location you are fishing. If you are surf fishing, a surf rod combo is usually recommended. If you are fishing off a boat or a pier, a medium, heavy-action rod around 7 foot accompanied by at least a 4000 size reel with 20-pound test or higher fishing line and 20-pound test or higher fluorocarbon leader should do the trick.

The fourth question—what kind of bait should I use? Live bait or fresh cut bait will usually show the best results. Live bait, like Finger Mullet, Croaker, small Pinfish and Perch work fantastic, especially if the visibility in the water is good. If the water is very cloudy causing poor visibility, then any one of these fresh baits cut up into chunks will work best because Red Drum can smell the cut bait from long distances. So, now that we have covered the basics, I would like to recommend a location that has worked for locals and tourists alike for years and that is the Folly Pier. Ran by Charleston County Parks & Recreation, the Folly Pier has been a location where inshore fishermen have routinely targeted seasonal fish like King Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel, Tarpon and, of course, big Red Drum. Using the bait and tackle recommended above, people of all ages have had the opportunity and chance to catch and land one of these red monsters off of this pier. Unfortunately, we only have until October 18th to fish off of the Folly Pier. The Folly Pier after October 18th is scheduled for demolition. The pier will be rebuilt with concrete pilings and a wood deck. It will take an estimated time of two years before the pier will officially be reopened and locals and tourists will be able to fish off of it again. So, if you are looking for a location that not only will supply the fish, but has bathrooms, a restaurant and a café, the Folly Pier is one of the best places to be up to October 18th. Folly Beach Pier Fishing Forecast For October By Joey Crawford

t’s true, this is the last month with our beloved fishing pier on Folly Beach. The current one has loyally served millions of residents and tourists for over a quarter century since it opened July 4th, 1995. It’s survived countless hurricanes and nor’easters; however, wood-boring mollusks have taken their toll on the pilings. The current pier is still a sound, solid structure with the cast-repairs we have done over the years, but it’s finally time to replace it completely. The last day for fishing will be Sunday, October 18th and construction is expected to last for about two years with a re-open date in 2023. The new pier will be in the exact foot print of the current one, extending 1045’ into the ocean with a diamond shape at the end. There will be many improvements including bigger sun shelters, easier pedestrian accesses, and a 360° unobstructed view down at the end of the diamond. In addition, the pilings will be concrete with a life expectancy of sixty years. However, the pier deck and railings will still be built of wood to keep that “Folly feel” to it. Good news is after this winter the pier giftshop and restaurant, Pier 101, will re-open in Spring 2021 with a newly remodeled deck. You’ll be able to come out, grab a bite to eat, and watch the new pier actively being built. We expect it to be quite the spectacle. With all of that said, now’s the time to come on out and get that one last line in the water. October is always Charleston’s best month for fishing, including the Folly Pier. The cooling temperatures signal many species to start feeding and migrating southward along the coast. Midway down the pier you’ll find drum, trout, and whiting in the shallow gullies where most anglers use a shrimp on a two-drop rig or Carolina rig. In the same area sheepshead can be found feeding off the piling growth and will usually go for a fiddler just under the water. Moving farther down onto the pier diamond you’ll find king and Spanish mackerel. Under the right conditions they’ll hit top water lures or live bait. If you’re lucky enough you may even hook an elusive crevalle jack or tarpon. Due to COVID-19 we aren’t hosting a last pier tournament; however, the summer-long cast-off challenge is still going on. All you have to do is weigh in your catch and if yours is the biggest for that category after October 18th you’ll receive an award and prizes. Eligible catches must be within SCDNR regulation and caught from the Folly Pier. As always please remember to follow our social distancing and mask rules when using the facility. Fishy Nurse Adventures Pumkin Bull Redfish

elcome to Red October!!! Catching pumpkins or bull reds with an orange tan to them! October is one of my favorite months to fish! This past year has been crazy I have already caught so many nice bull reds! I typically catch them more in September and October. Catching them so early in the season has been a treat! My birthday is in October and usually for my birthday we head out on the water and fish for Bulls. A couple of years ago I caught my biggest Bull at 48.5 inches and he was a Stud! I received a phone call that my friends cousin Harry was in town, he was running a 74ft Viking at the time. The owner of the boat wanted to fish for bull redfish but they couldn’t find a guide to take them so they had asked if I could go and help out. I had to catch some bait first and then put them on some redfish. I accepted the challenge and showed up to this huge Sport fisher, I thought to myself this is gonna be very strange considering I’m used to fishing for reds on center consoles and flats boats. I had already caught the bait near my house and off we went. The first spot wasn’t too productive so we moved to the next spot and the bite was on fire! A little later the big boy hit with the tap, tap and then thump... he was on! I reeled him in as the owner was eating lunch and we called him out! We quickly got a picture of him and then for the first time in my life I had to open a Tuna door to revive the largest red fish of my life!!! It was such a fun experience and one heck of a fishing story! With the cooler temperatures the fish get more aggressive and October can be one heck of a great month to fish! Lowcountry Kayak Fishing ______________________________________________________________

Kayak Fishing Gear: The Basics

here is one question that I get asked often, “Mike what type of fishing gear do I need to fish from a kayak in the saltwater?” Of course this is a pretty loaded question that can run down so many different lanes depending on preferences like live bait fishing, fly fishing, artificial bait fishing! Then there’s the question of gear experience? Bait casters or spinning reels? Budget? Heavy tackle, light tackle? There are so many variables, we could talk about this for day’s even weeks and only begin to scratch the surface and that does not include talking about favored brands! So let’s set some basic boundaries around this discussion to help us come up with the best overall recommendation for gear. When you kayak fish in a saltwater environment typically you will find yourself fishing inshore areas like creeks, marshes, estuaries and coves so your locations are typically smaller inshore waters. These waters are typically inhabited with Redfish, Speckled Sea Trout, Flounder, Black Drum and Sheephead; there are numerous other species in these waters as well but the five I listed are normally what most anglers are fishing for. Starting with rods and reels, most prefer spinning combos (myself included) over baitcasters or fly combos. Spinning reels range in size from 500 (ultra light) up to 7000 + (heavy jigging rods) on rods that are ultra light up to heavy surf or trolling rods. For most all inshore fishing a 2000 to 4000 reel paired to a 6’8” ML to a 7’6” M / MH rod. If you can only afford one rod and reel combo I would recommend a 2500 or 3000 series reel paired to a ML / M 7’ fast action rod. Pair you reel with 10 to 15# braided line and have some 15 to 20# flouro line for leader material; with this one set up you can go after and land most any inshore species. Fish with the right bait and you can fish multiple species without changing any of your gear. For example, in the fall months I can tie on Eye Strike Fishing’s Trout Eye Finesse jighead with a Z-man Slim Swimz in opening night color and catch trout, reds and flounder in the same trip on the same bait. When you look to purchase your first combo, a couple things to consider beyond cost are weight and durability. First weight, a heavy combo becomes hard to use after awhile and, unlike being on a boat where you just set your combo down and turn on your engine and go, in the yak you are the engine, so try to watch the overall weight of the combo. Second is durability, in a salt environment you are going to want to purchase the most durable reel you can afford. If you can get one that is saltwater protected/sealed, even better. When I hit the water now, I normally take three spinning combos with me. One will have a topwater lure tied on like a Spook Jr, another will have a Mirrodine or Yozuri suspended twitchbait tied on and the last will have a jighead with some sort of swimbait tied on. Having three combos set up like this allows me to work all parts of the water column without having to spend a bunch of time retying. I prefer to use 2500 series reels and 7’ ML

With Australian wildfires, civil unrest, pandemic and all, there is a need for good times and entertainment but how does one accomplish this and still enforce social distancing? Charleston on the Water’s Independence Day Concert featuring Colt Ford was a creative way to still celebrate the Fourth while maintaining social distancing standards. The event, originally conceptualized for Labor Day, was moved up when local municipalities began to cancel the 4th of July fireworks

shows around town. Unfortunately, the group wasn’t able to get fireworks permitted but the show did go on and just over five hundred boats found their way to Charleston Harbor to celebrate the holiday. The event came together in about thirty days and would not have happened without the support of the marine industry, the partners in the event and the sponsors. In fact, everyone pitched in to make this happen and what great performances by The Brady Smith Band, Lauren Hall and Colt Ford. October Forecast for Kiawah, Seabrook & Edisto Islands By Captain John Ward

ctober is probably my favorite month to fish in the low country of South Carolina. The shorter days and cooler weather has got the bait and fish fired up! There is life everywhere you look on the water, with large schools of bait funneling through our waters and the fish are gorging trying to pack on weight to make it through the winter. Usually the crowds are starting to thin out on the water due to : hunting season, college football and kids back in school, so get out and enjoy the great bite and less crowded waters. Inshore the trout, bluefish and ladyfish bite has been good around high incoming water using popping corks with live baits under an 1830’’ leader fishing around marsh lines and creek points, the bite has been better with the cleaner water on the incoming tide and lighter wind days. Mud minnows and mullet have been out producing live shrimp primarily due to the bait thieves. Low tide we are still working structure like docks and blow downs with a carolina rig with live or fresh cut bait, mostly targeting: redfish, black drum, sheepshead and flounder. During the slack tides we have been hitting the inlets targeting: tarpon, sharks and bull redfish using live and cut baits on float and carolina rigs. The

surf fishing has been really good with tarpon and sharks following the large schools of mullet going down the beach, also the bull reds are in the surf in good numbers. The nearshore waters and reefs are producing good numbers of Spanish mackerels, false albicore, and bluefish on the surface tossing spoons and jigs on the surface. Bottom fishing has been good for: weakfish, reds, sheepshead, and flounder using live bait near the bottom, also surprising still good numbers of spadefish near the surface using jelly balls and squid under a float or sub surface with light leader small hook and split shot. Get out side and enjoy the comfortable temperatures and hungry fish while the fabulous weather and bite last. he Sportsman 267 Masters is a fairly large bay boat, it can handle many different situations on the water, wether its trecking out into the open sea for some bottom fishing, cutting through Charleston harbor to the jetties or traveling up the Wando river to your favorite redfish hole, this boat is easily up to the task. With it’s Yamaha F425 XTO with a few people on board you can easily cruise at 55 mph. Once you get to your fishing spot you’ll quickly notice that with even five people aboard you won’t feel crowded. Another couple of items worth mentioning are how the fish boxes are designed, instead of placing them in the deck, under foredeck seating or under the aft casting deck, which is typical for a boat like this, Sportsman has placed a coffin box under an extended forward console lounge seat. There is also a small box in the foredeck of the boat. This pushes all the fish stowage capacity to the front of the boat. Fortunately that coffin box can handle a lot of fish and your looking for a more permanant solution for all your fishing needs for a some very large fish its huge. Secondly, the livewells are plentiful in this boat, if you like to fish with live few years this is a great bay boat worth looking at, it will make a great fishing bait you will be blown away by how much bait you can haul around. Artificial Intelligence Search High and Low

eptember was a month of bounty for inshore fish. Bait fish of all shapes and sizes were easy-pickings as they mass-migrated out of the estuary and out to the ocean to warmer waters. Now that the waters are cooling off, there is a lot less food around for the predators and they are starting to get panicky. Its kind of like when the forecasters warn of a hurricane two thousand miles away and we’re in the cone. Suddenly every grocery store is wiped out of hurricane snacks and water. Panic sets in and we are searching frantically for beer and corn chips. When the clerk puts a flat of water on the shelf, we are elbowing each other out of the way for a chance to get it. And so it is with fish in the Fall. If you present an artificial lure and make it look real, fish are going to pounce on it. The cooler water tends to make inshore fish school up, and if you don’t know how to find them you can easily get skunked – find them, and you might catch one hundred plus. This month, I’m going to help you find your own trout spots in general terms – something you can use to scout unfamiliar water and probably have some success. One of the most valuable pieces of advice I’ve gotten came from one of my fishing heroes, Capt. Bob Sanders. Capt. Bob is the father of the Trout Trick, an artificial lure that has become a household name among trout fishermen nationwide. I am proud to call him a friend, and one day while fishing he explained a reliable formula for finding trout. He advised me to find a hard-bottom flat that never goes dry at low tide, that is close to deep water. Over the years, this formula when applied to different locations has proven to be accurate time and again. Do you have a good trout spot? Does it fit this description? I bet at least some of your spots do. A hard bottom is generally great habitat for inshore fish, because it provides a home for the beginning of the food chain. How can we find hard bottom, even if the water is relatively deep? Here are several ways, ranging from primitive to high tech.

Where is the likely hard bottom?

In the days before advanced sonar, they had to be creative. Bob told me Cherokee Indians used to tie a chain to a piece of rope and drift over an area. By feeling how the chain dragged along the bottom they could feel if there was any structure on bottom. Similarly, try fan casting a flat and letting the lure swim or hop along bottom. If there are shells or structure, you will get hung up periodically. Another low-tech method is to drop anchor over an area. If you have trouble getting your anchor to hold, it’s probably a hard bottom. Let’s assume you have a good echo sonar, as most people probably do these days. I’d bet that most people don’t utilize this great technology

at their fingertips to anywhere near its fullest extent. For example, have you ever paid really close attention to what the bottom looks like when drifting over a flat with a known hard bottom, then done the same on a known soft, muddy bottom? You will notice a distinct difference in color and appearance for soft vs hard. If you pay close attention, you can get a great understanding of the bottom condition in an entirely new area by simply glancing at the screen, and not just the big number showing the depth. Lastly, if you have the latest side scan technology, you really don’t need to do anything other than look at your screen, as bottom structure is quite apparent on a side scan image. There are other strong clues to a hard bottom. Have you ever paid attention to the bank while running down a creek? Banks that are adjacent marsh grass indicate muddy and likely smooth bottom nearby. Banks with nearby trees indicate hard bottom. Trees can’t grow unless there is hard soil or sand. Their roots also may provide underwater structure. My business partner Ralph really opened my eyes to be able to “read” the banks to predict the underwater structure. We would round a bend in a creek and his instruction would usually go something like this: Ralph: “What do you notice here?” Me: “Uuuuuh” Ralph: “See that old roadbed going through the marsh, right up to the bank?” Me: “Ooooohhh!”. Take a look around, and you will start to see things in a different light. The presence of coral usually indicates a good spot. In Charleston, you will recognize the stuff if you have ever reeled in a spindly yellow plant when retrieving your line. These are usually found closer to the coast and provide great trout habitat. Further inshore toward brackish water, the presence of garfish breaking the surface sometimes indicates a good fishing hole. It seems that garfish often feed on the same things as game fish. Once you’ve found yourself one or more likely good spots based on the formula and bottom structure, remember that cooler water makes fish start to school. Work the area thoroughly because you may find them bunched up on a relatively small spot. If you don’t have luck on a likely spot, don’t give up on it. Come back on other tides and weather conditions and I’d be willing to bet that eventually the fish will be there. Once you know what do look for, both above and below the water, you will find that good “spots” are literally everywhere, and not necessarily in community holes. Now that you got yourself a productive spot, the next thing you need to do is master the “sky” or “boat” background when taking your catch pictures, unless you like company, because the first thing fishermen do when looking at your trophy catch pic is not the fish, but the background! ctober is one of the best months to fish in the southern United States. This transition month signals the migration of marine life along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, creating a feeding frenzy and a great opportunity for anglers in more ways than one. The obvious opportunity is an abundance of feeding fish congregating in the path of schools of bait. From the mullet run on the Atlantic to the shrimp migration of the Texas and Louisiana marsh, these two annual migrations give anglers the opportunity to catch any native fish they desire. Some of the more popular game fish include snook, tarpon, speckled trout, redfish and flounder. The flounder will also be making their annual voyage to spawn in open water, which makes them extremely easy to target. In addition to making fish easier to locate, and catch, the second opportunity is not as obvious. However, I feel it is one of equal importance to hone your fishing skills. The time is now to learn or fine-tune your skills fishing with lures. With aggressively feeding fish, this is the best time to gain confidence throwing plastic, and as the saying goes, “fool’em, don’t feed’em.” As a lifelong angler, I’ve utilized just about every legal means to catch fish, but none are more rewarding than tricking them into eating something that is not natural. Sure, as a youngster I just wanted to catch and that was very rewarding, but until you make the switch you will never know the feeling I am referring to. Soft plastics will pay the most dividends when it comes to artificials. They are tried and true lures and some of the easiest to use. They will also save you money because, unlike a live or dead shrimp, you can catch several fish on one lure. To hone this down even more, paddle-style lures, or swimbaits as they are often called, are the most simple to use for the novice angler. Depending on the area and structure you are fishing near as well as the strength of the current, you will either choose to rig these on a jig head or a weighted weedless hook. A great attribute of the swimbait is it can be very effective on a steady retrieve. For the beginner, you can just cast, reel and catch. It can literally be that simple. The jerk-style or “fluke” soft plastic is also very effective, but takes more effort to fish and you will need to develop “the touch” when working the lure. It’s is not that difficult, but it does take a little practice to produce that erratic action fish love. This fall, pick up a few packs of soft plastic lures, grab a few jig heads, and leave the bait bucket and stinky dead bait at home. The time is now to catch fish, gain confidence in something new, and save money doing it. Capt. Handle Fish With Care By Jerry Kane

hether you intend to release a fish you catch or legally keep it, the fish should be handled properly... for the fish’s sake – and yours. Any caught fish that you do not intend to keep should be returned to the water immediately with as little stress to the fish as possible. That means minimal handling of the fish. One thing can make handling fish challenging is fish are slimy, potentially making grasping and holding them difficult. A fish’s coat of slime is what protects it from diseases and parasites. The more a fish is handled, the more its protective slime coat is compromised. The best way to release a fish without causing damage is to remove the hook and release the fish while in the water. There is another option. Take an old kitchen towel with you fishing and soak it. When you catch a fish, cradle the fish in that wet towel. It not only will let you get a good grasp on the fish and prevent possible punctures from fish spines, but it will protect the fish and its slime coat. Remove the hook while holding the fish and then release the fish back into the water. For removing hooks from fish, use needle-nose pliers or forceps. If you plan on releasing all your fish, use the pliers to bend down the barb on the point, making hook removal easier. Another tool you can use is a net made of fish-friendly material that minimizes stress on fish. On the other hand, if you want to harvest some fish, there are ways to handle that. A bucket of water or stringer will keep fish for a short time. Otherwise, place the caught fish on ice immediately.

Atlantic sailfish may continue to be landed and retained consistent with applicable regulations. Anglers are reminded that Atlantic billfish that are released must be handled in a manner that will maximize survival, and without removing the fish from the water. Here are some additional tips:

• Do not remove fish from the water, even for a photo. • Rig a measuring device so the fish can be measured in the water. • Never gaff billfish in the body. Use a lip gaff in the front lower jaw or a snooter. • Use non-offset circle hooks. • If you cannot safely remove the hook, cut the leader as close to the hook as possible. • Use heavier tackle to reduce fight time. • Slowly tow spent fish with the boat until their color/energy returns before release.

Big Sheepshead Is A Maryland Record

massive 14.1-pound sheepshead caught by an angler targeting speckled trout and striper is a new Chesapeake Bay record, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Daniel Mastronardi Jr., of Dorchester County, Maryland, caught the record-breaking fish on Aug. 9 in the lower bay while fishing peeler crab in about 15 feet of water. Mastronardi’s catch breaks the 13.73-pound record that was set three years ago by Dave Alveberg. Mastronardi, 33, said his catch came unexpectedly. “I really had no idea what I had on the line,” he said. Mastronardi reeled in the recordbreaking sheepshead and immediately called his father to check the current state records. He said, “It really was one of the biggest I’ve ever seen.” He plans to have his catch mounted. Maryland state records for sportfish are kept four divisions – Atlantic, Chesapeake, Non-tidal, and Invasive. The Maryland record for sheepshead in the Atlantic division weighed 18 pounds and was caught in 2017. The IGFA world record, caught off New Orleans in 1982, weighed 21 pounds, 4 ounces.

SHRIMP BOATS AND OIL RIGS OUT OF GRAND ISLE

erched on the outer edge of the bayous south of New Orleans, Grand Isle, Louisiana, is like a whole other world to outsiders. Last year, my husband and I entered the Battle at Bridge Side tournament with the Atlanta Saltwater Sportsman’s Club, simply because neither of us had ever fished Louisiana. Arriving over the bayous hinted at the otherworldliness of this excursion. We had entered a realm where time didn’t hurry or run out; it ebbed and flowed as it pleased, just like the creole accent dripping from every local’s greeting. Our first adventure invoked scenes from Forrest Gump as we prepared to fish the shrimp boats. A line of smaller vessels patiently waited for turns behind Miss Geraldine. While we were waiting, Capt. Ward Lang informed us it would go incredibly fast. We cut up small porgy in anxious preparation. When it was our boat’s turn, I squelched the urge to declare we were WAY too close—I could see the boots of Miss Geraldine’s crew! We inched 5 feet behind Geraldine’s prop wash and threw out fistfuls of porgy parts as we drifted. The fish popped hard for what seemed like a split second, and then it was over. My husband, George, reeled in a 25-pound tuna on the first pass before the rest of us got sharked on the second and third passes. The fish fight coupled with the urgency of this maneuver gave a great shot of adrenaline. All I could say for the next few hours was, “That was awesome!” Ten miles from Bridge Side Marina, we used sabikis weighted with 8 ounces of lead to fill baitwells with blue runners. That bait would fuel an overnight excursion to a deep-water rig. I bowed out; my husband did not. A day and a half later, I welcomed him back, along with his play-byplay account of a bucket-list night. The teenage grin was still on his face as he began: “Once we finally got 100 miles out there, we waited for the sun to go down and the action to pick up. We circled ‘Brutus’ (the rig’s nickname). I caught a beautiful yellowfin head, and a shark got its tail. You know how it goes! “Two of Brutus’ support ships shielded us from the weather, and our captains’ Rhodan spot locks did the rest of the anchor work. We were in 3,000 feet of water with vertical jigs, and the bite was around 350 feet. By 6:30 the next morning, only one person was awake in each boat. We hauled in 31 blackfin with the help of an electric reel. I helped position the outriggers for morning trolling back to the docks and caught a nice mahi. Then I caught a nice snooze in the beanbag. It was amazing!” I rejoined the team on the last day of the tournament. We dropped baits 60 feet around a system of ocean-floor oil pipes and pulled up some nice red snapper. It was nice of the DNR to give us an additional weekend of open season right at the last minute.

ctober means pumpkin spice is everywhere and the smallmouth bite is strong. As the first cold fronts show up, cooler temperatures kickstart a feeding frenzy as the fish rush to fatten up before the long cold winter. Normally we would be hitting the Susquehanna River this time of year. The Susquehanna runs right through Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and is known as one of the best smallmouth fisheries in the country, especially for fly fishing. Bob Clouser actually developed the Clouser Minnow here as he helped make the area famous. Unfortunately, we had a hot dry summer that left the river so low it’s hard to even get a kayak around in some parts. Fortunately, one of the Susquehanna’s tributaries, Conodoguinet Creek, seems to stay much more hydrated. The bass have no issues moving up into it. This is a great time of year, even for novice fly fishermen, as it’s all pretty basic from equipment to technique. I use a G. Loomis Asquith 7 weight and a Nautilus 7/8 with Scientific Anglers floating line and an 8-foot, 10-poundtest leader, but any quality 6 to 8 weight will do. For flies, a yellow, green or black popper works perfectly. You know the kind. They are the popping bugs you find anywhere from high-end fly shops to gas stations with microwavesized fishing departments. The fishing is pretty simple, and even a beginner can catch dozens of fish in a day. The bigger bass tend to hang in the creases created by disruptions in the water produced by rocks sticking up or bridge pilings. Fish these

Sav 40% creases far downstream of where you think the water has fused again, as there is still a freeway of food being funneled to waiting fish. When there is nothing to create creases, it’s best to concentrate on the shoreline, which holds abundant small fish. Presentation is pretty basic, but accuracy helps. Cast into the crease and let the fly settle until the ripples disappear. If you haven’t hooked up by then, give the fly a slight twitch and pause again. I find that most of my strikes come right after the fly hits the water, so the fish are keying in on that sound. That said, making hard strips with the popper tends to act more like a fire alarm than a dinner bell and sends fish running for cover. Usually, after a couple of twitches, it’s time to recast to keep in the crease. Utilizing a backcast is also useful to work both sides of the creek, especially if you are being guided, so as to not hook your captain. Regardless of whether you are working down the creek by boat, tube or foot, this time of year is great for fly fishermen who want to catch strong and lively smallmouths.
