Whatever happened to Sea Cat? By Thatch Maguire
A
bout 20 years ago, I had the opportunity to ride aboard a dual-hull, 21-foot center console called a Sea Cat. Like many others, I’ve been a fan of cats ever since. The ride of a dual-hull vessel, especially in choppy seas, is dramatically different from that of a mono-hull. The stability of a two-hull system creates a cutting effect, as opposed to the bounce associated with the plaining of the mono-hull. Study after study has confirmed this effect affords “cats” substantially better fuel economy as well as a much smoother ride and shallower draft. The “cult” of the dual-hull cat has its origins in Australia, where catamaran-style hulls have long been the choice for Australia’s working fishermen. The consistent chop in their seas requires the stability of a catamaran hull. In the United States, several companies pioneered development of the catamaran-style boats for our waters. In the late 1950s, Ray Leger began producing the Power Cat series on the West Coast and several other companies including Manacat and Ocean Star began producing cats in the East. Years after my ride aboard the Sea Cat, I purchased a 26-foot World Cat. I was told Sea Cat was now World Cat. I visited the North Carolina World Cat factory, where I was told they no longer produced the Sea Cat. Recently, I learned the Sea Cat is still being produced in Greenville, N.C. After a few phone calls, and a little Googling, I found Forrest Munden at Sea Cat Boats. The following interview with Mr. Munden attempts to unravel the mystery of “Whatever happened to Sea Cat?” Q: Mr. Munden, how is it you are today selling a vessel that many thought was no longer on the market? Weren’t you associated with the original Sea Cat I fell in love with? Munden: Yes I was. Sea Cat was originally created by Graham Flanagan in 1992. I was manufacturing Leisure Cat boats with Regal Marine in Orlando, Fla., and Graham was manufacturing Sea Cat boats in Greenville, N.C. The innovations developed on the Sea Cat seemed destined to have substantial influence on the boating industry. The boats were super fuel-efficient and rode smoothly in nearly any conditions.

Q: Well what happened? Munden: In 1996, I purchased Sea Cat boats and its Greenville manufacturing facility. During my first year with the brand, I designed and developed the World Cat line of catamaran boats. World Cat molds were manufactured by Vectorworks Marine in Titusville, Fla. by my good friend Jeff Gray, CEO of Vectorworks. Once we received the new World Cat molds at the plant in Greenville, we started making the World Cat and stopped making the Sea Cat. That was early in 1997. The Sea Cat molds were stored for another year and a half until my good friend Ken Hall (previous CEO of Proline/Donzi) purchased them. He owned the Florida boat company Sportcraft and wanted to add a catamaran line. He called the Sea Cat boat the Sportcat. Unfortunately, Sportcat and Sportcraft did not survive the 1998 economic downturn. The next I heard of Sea Cat was when a former Sea Cat dealer and two brothers from Columbia, S.C. splashed the 19-foot Sea Cat mold. Then, Jerry Semers purchased that mold from the brothers, who had closed their business. Mr. Semers’ started the new venture in Titusville, Fla., utilizing Vector Works Marine as a home base. He called the boat Sea Cat. After Mr. Semers passed away, the molds and tooling sat vacant for years. In 2017, a good friend and ex-Sea Cat and World Cat dealer invited me into a venture to make a new catamaran with the Sea Cat name. I reached out to Mr. Gray at Vectorworks and proceeded to do the tooling and mold building through their team. The result, introduced in 2019, is the new 260 Sea Cat Hybrid bay boat built by our partner Pete Caldwell, Caldwell Marine Designs. The original Seacat Boat built in 1992 was built again 27 years later at the same Greenville plant. Today’s vessel is capable of power up to twin 300 horsepower. Today’s 26-foot Sea Cat has handling characteristics far superior to the original that you fell in love with. I
f you’ve never made your way to Florida’s Forgotten Coast to spend a day in the Gulf of Mexico catching red snapper, you owe it to yourself to have a go at it. The red snapper is likely the most prized catch of anglers here, and for good reasons: they make most excellent table fare, they’re absolutely beautiful, they’re easy to catch most days, and it’s hard to beat snapper fishing for a day of friends and family fun.
To give you an idea about how prolific the red snapper are here, let me share a phrase commonly used by local charter captains fishing for other species of fish: “We had to leave that spot because we couldn’t get our bait past the snapper!” Yes, FWC does tightly manage harvest seasons and bag limits, and it’s frustrating for many, but the fact is, we have a lot of red snapper here! Currently, the Gulf snapper season runs June 11 through July 12. If you plan on bringing your own boat to the area, fear not; plenty of boat ramps and other accommodations will ensure your experience is a good one. Finding snapper can be as easy as using the many public sites available, just plug them into your GPS and go! Rigging for snapper is very easy. I’d suggest a minimum of 30-pound-test mainline, and make your leaders with a quality 50-pound-test fluorocarbon. If using live bait like cigar minnows or Spanish sardines, I suggest you fabricate your leader this way. Attach a swivel to your main line, use 80-pound mono to create a 6-inch leader to slide your egg sinker onto, with another swivel on the other end. Now attach a 5-foot length of fluorocarbon leader with a 3/0 to 5/0 circle hook on the business end. When fishing deep with a conventional Carolina-style rig where the weight slips, you’ll sometimes find that your weight is all the way to the bottom, but your live bait is swimming right under the boat. Securing the weight to the leader rig ensures this doesn’t happen and gets the bait right down to the fish. Guides here are at the ready to take you, your family and friends out for what promises to be an exceptionally good snapper season, but book early, availability can be limited once the season kicks off. Many other species of fish are on the chew here too, folks, so don’t overlook the tarpon, redfish, AJs, king mackerel and so much more that awaits both inshore and offshore. Charleston’s June Fishing Forecast

une is a great month to fish in Charleston. The bite is really good for the local fish and for the many migratory species coming through the area. Our usual suspects--redfish, sea trout, and flounder—will be found back in the creeks and flats in the marsh. These fish can be caught in a number of ways. The early morning top water bite can be very fun. There is a lot of bait in the water this time of year so the redfish will eat a variety of live and cut bait. Mud minnows under a popping cork or finger mullet on the bottom will work great for any of these hungry fish. You may also use a DOA shrimp in glow or gold flake color and do very well for a variety of fish. Slow presentation and drift in the current works great for the lure. Variety is a major theme this month because of the large number of species you can catch. Many different types of fish are migrating through our waters. The Spanish mackerel can be found in the Charleston harbor, inlets and jetties. Bluefish and ladyfish will be travelling with the schools of Spanish. Use 30# or 40# fluorocarbon leaders and small baits for these fish. Small Clark spoons size 00 or any small synthetic jigs in the 1/8-1/2 oz size work great. These are also great fish to catch on a light fly rod. Clouser minnows and surf candy flies work well. Larger migrating species including sharks, tarpon, and jacks will also show up this time of the year. Many species of sharks invade the area when the water warms. Use live or cut bait on the bottom for these. I have also caught sharks on a fly rod. The tarpon are always a great
game fish and large ones 80-180 lb show up off the beach. Every year there are some large jacks that make their way into the Charleston harbor to eat the bait the harbor provides. If the weather is calm you might even go off the beach and look for cobia or amberjacks. In June, the possibilities are endless--usually the hardest thing to do is to decide which type of fish you want to target on a given day! A great way to spend the day on the water is to book one of the area’s great guides. World Class Striper Fishing on Lake Murray
R
ichard Hall remembers when, at 17, he was about to start fishing in the Congaree River. A man asked him what he was going to catch. “A striper,” he replied. A few minutes later Richard’s first bite stripped all the line off his Mitchell 300 reel and his day of fishing ended as quickly as it began. To say that a love for striper fishing shaped his life is understatement. Richard has guided for striped bass and operated his well-known Lexington fishing store “Lake World” for over 36 years. Hall says the biggest difference between now and those beginning days is that the number of fishermen has tripled. While some fishermen may not like that statistic, he points out that more fishermen means more success stories; lots more pictures of people holding stripers. Currently there are an estimated 30 full time striper guides on Lake Murray. “Murray is just fantastic,” says Morris Morgan, a Davidson, NC resident who makes an annual full week trip to Murray with a dozen co-workers and friends. “Some times are tougher than others but we always find fish. And if the striper fishing slows we simply target largemouth.” Morgan and his group choose October because their weapons of choice are top-water lures. “We like fishing top-water for schooling fish,” he said. It’s just the way we like to catch them.” Doug Baker from Lexington, SC is someone you might see on Murray alongside Photo Courtesy “Fishing Lake Murray” Morgan’s group. “Murray is by far the best striper lake I’ve fished”, says Baker, who began his striper fishing on Santee Cooper. “It’s much better here, he explained, particularly with the size of the fish.” Baker usually begins his fishing in spring and fishes well into the fall. “In spring I’ll start out early free-lining (trolling) using a couple plainer boards. Then as the day warms up I’ll go to down-rodding (fishing deeper). In July and August it can be really tough when fish are super deep, but you can still find them. That’s when I really enjoy night fishing,” he said. As Baker recalls catching a 24 pound striper on top-water, you hear an unmistakable enthusiasm, a sort of youthful excitement all serious anglers harbor. And as he describes his set up (a Bennington 2O foot customized fishing pontoon), it’s apparent he has done the homework and preparation. “From the time I was ten years old I’ve been a bass fisherman,” he said. Baker recalled an early striper fishing memory that sounded familiar. He was at Santee and the fish he never turned spooled the line off of his Zebco 33. “It just stripped all the gears out of that poor reel,” he laughed. It’s this brute strength that makes the striped bass one of the most sought after game fish. In fact, a growing appeal to sport fishermen was the primary reason the fish were introduced into Murray in 1971. “They were introduced to diversify sport fishing options for 4 CHARLESTON

anglers and also to help control pelagic forage base, basically gizzard shad that would get too big for anything to eat,” said Jason Bettinger, SC DNR Freshwater Fisheries Biologist. While Bettinger and other biologists consider the striper story in Murray a success, difficult challenges exist. “We’re stocking about a million fish per year because they’re not going to reproduce, and the catch and release mortality rate in summer is high. As many as 80 percent of the fish caught in deep water in the summer are going to die when released,” he added. This mortality rate, along with a difficult and complex reproduction cycle, means that regulations are well thought out and tightly enforced. According to Fisheries Biologist Scott Lamprecht, the management plan works. When asked about his 10 year outlook, he said “there are natural factors we can’t predict, but with the management and stock rate it should be fairly steady state with a few bumps in the road due to weather conditions and water flows.” While Murray is more well-known, the Columbia area isn’t without other outstanding fisheries. The Saluda River is well-known for rainbow and brown trout fishing and is rife with striper as they move from the upper Congaree River towards Lake Murray dam, the more secluded Broad River is a world class smallmouth fishery, and Lake Monticello is known as a good largemouth, catfish, and smallmouth fishery. But Lake Murray is the shiniest gem. Not just because of it’s size (650 miles of shoreline and covering 50,000 acres of land), and not just because it’s a world class striper fishery, but also because it has provided immensely for the area’s tourism economy. Miriam Atra, President and CEO of Lake Murray Country, estimates that Lake Murray draws well over a million tourists annually. Her organization, one of the 11 SC tourism offices, promotes outdoor recreation to Saluda, Newberry, Richland, and Lexington Counties. If an event is Lake Murray related Miriam and her staff are involved. She estimates her agency generates between 18 and 25 million dollars in economic impact from tourism annually, but pointed out that the number can be higher. “An FLW event generated 30 million one year, and the first FLW event we held here generated 42 million. “ Lake Murray has hosted the FLW’s season ending Forest Wood Cup three times in the past 11 years (2008, 2014, and 2017). New School Weedless for Bass
W
e have all done it. You pass a bridge in your car and lean out the window in the hopes of seeing water below. Super fishy water. The kind of waterway packed with fresh new lily pads and gnarly timber. We all know that bass love to dig in to this heavy cover. Presenting a traditional bait to these buried fish can prove difficult as snags are almost guaranteed. For most anglers the go-to weedless classic is a Texas Rig. This “T Rig” is a sliding bullet weight and an offset hook paired with a plastic worm. While Texas Rigs work well, there are some new school options that shouldn’t be overlooked. Shaky Head While bullet weights lay the bait flat on the bottom, shaky heads are designed to position the bait and hook upright. Small twitches (or shakes) of the rod tip will instill action to the worm. This technique waves the bait right in the fishes face all the while remaining in same location. This allows anglers to concentrate on specific areas. Shaky Heads perform very well in scenarios where finesse tactics win the bite.
Hinged Style Offset Hooks Hinged style hooks allow additional freedom of movement. The bait will rise off the bottom to entice the fish especially when paired with a buoyant plastic. EWG Weighted Shank Weighted shank hooks can be adapted to a wide variety of sizes and styles of plastics. Usually extra wide gap (EWG), these hooks allow plenty of room for the soft plastic. Weighted shank hooks accel when paired with swim style baits. Many recent tournament trail victories have been attributed to swim baits rigged weedless with a shiny underspin attached. Tokyo Rig A unique new offering quickly gaining popularity is the Tokyo Rig. This setup props the bait up off a silty bottom that would otherwise hide the bait. The presentation also provides a snag free profile that easily penetrates even the densest of weed mats. Weight can be adjusted as needed using a bendable wire. Don’t shy away from areas untouched by other anglers due to dense cover. Try using some of the examples above to dig those giant bass out. Break out of your “T Rig” comfort zone today! Peanut Encrusted Tuna with a Mango Salsa and Sweet Chili Glaze
S
pring/Summer is a great time to enjoy outdoor gatherings and great appetizers. Here is a simple yet delicious app that will surely please the crowds. Ingredients for Peanut Crust: 1.5 cups Roasted UNSALTED Peanuts 1 cup Panko Breadcrumbs Salt and Pepper- To Taste Ingredients for Tuna: 1cup flour 2 eggs- whisked 1 cup soy Peanut Crust Canola Oil Mae Ploy/ Sweet Chili Glaze (they sell this premade in the grocery store) Ingredients/Method of Preparation for the Mango Salsa: 1 Ripe Mango- Diced Small 1 Fresno Chili- Minced ½ Bunch Chives- Sliced small ½ Bunch Cilantro- Chopped 1 Lime- Juiced Salt and Pepper- To Taste Mix all the ingredients in a bowl and put in the fridge until needed

Method of Preparation for the Peanut Crust: In a food processor pulse the peanuts until they are almost the same size as the breadcrumbs. Then add the breadcrumbs and S & P and pulse very shortly until it comes together Method of Preparation for breading/cooking the Tuna: To start grab 3 bowls. In one add the flour, in another one whisk the eggs and add the soy, and in the third bowl add the peanut crust. Get the tuna and put in the flour coating all sides, then add to the soy/egg wash, then add to the peanut crust. When you put it in the peanut crust make sure to firmly press it in there so it sticks well on all sides. Put the breaded tuna on a plate and put it in the fridge until it’s time to cook it. This can be done several hours before you need to cook it. To fry it get a pan and apply a generous amount of oil and heat until you see the oil lightly rippling. I would add about a ¼ inch in the pan. Feel free to also use a fry daddy if you are not comfortable searing it in a pan. Now add your tuna and cook it quickly on all sides for about a minute or 2 on each side max until the whole thing is golden brown. Do not cook it too long unless you want it cooked more than the usual rare temperature. To finish slice your tuna and shingle on a plate. Lightly salt the tuna and then add the mango salsa and the sweet chili glaze on top. Enjoy! – Chef Kyle Kryske is a native of Pascagoula, MS. f May is any indication of the type of fishing to expect in June, Lowcountry anglers are in for a treat. Harbor temperature is already above 75 degrees and should easily be into the 80’s by the time this goes to print. We’ve seen a wide variety of species show up for a bite and tighten some lines around the pier and only expect things to get better. Whiting and bluefish dominated a recent pier tournament, but we’ve seen reds, trout, flounder, black drum, Spanish mackerel, and more. Blue crabs are also becoming more prevalent as Cole Scroggs 3lb 13oz Flounder we get further into the season. June officially kicks the summer fishing season into high gear around these parts. While you can fish for a variety of species, flounder fishing is typically popular during June. Anglers usually have the best luck using live finger mullet or mud minnows fished on a basic Carolina rig. A 1.5 or 2-ounce egg sinker is perfect for this rig, but if the tide is really ripping you might need to size up to a 3-ounce weight. Some anglers prefer to rig up, relax, and watch the rod tip while others use a popular technique often referred to as “walking the dog.” When walking the dog the rig is slowly lowered until the weight hits bottom. After letting it rest for a few seconds the rig is slowly raised and walked down the rail a few feet and eased back to the bottom. Since flounder are ambush feeders this is a great way to cover more ground and increase opportunities to find that elusive doormat. Pier event season is in full swing. Be sure to check out the Cast Off pier fishing tournament on June 8 from 6am-2pm. Tournament entry is just $5 plus the daily fishing fee. This year we’re offering a free youth tournament entry (age 12 and under) with any paid adult. It’s a great opportunity to get them hooked at an early age and maybe win some prizes. Trolley Rigging for King Mackerel
A
s we move into June, we finally start moving out of spring and into the start of our summer season. As this happens, the water temperatures move into the ranges needed to bring in our King
Mackerel. Of course, they are not the only fish that become active as we move into the season. Spanish Mackerel, Tarpon and Bluefish, along with Ladyfish, which are also known as the poor man’s Tarpon, will be on the move. A popular way for locals and tourists to fish for all of these is off of our local piers. The Folly fishing pier is our Lowcountry’s prime location for targeting King Mackerel. The proper technique used is trolley rigging. Trolley rigging consists of two fishing rods set in rod holders side by side on the railing of the pier, usually off the end to reach the deepest and furthest water from the surf. One rod is called your fighting rod. This rod will not be a long rod, usually 7 feet or shorter, with a line rating from 20- to 50-pound test and a reel that has a line capacity to hold a minimum of 400-600 yards of 30-pound test monofilament. This will ensure that you have enough yardage to handle the long and fast runs that these powerful fish are known for. The other rod is called the anchor rod. These rods need to be as long and stout as possible and need to have reels that have a line capacity capable of holding at least 300 yards of 30- or 50-pound test line. Now, how it works. Two rod holders will be needed—one for your anchor rod, and one for your fight rod. The anchor rod will be tied to a sand anchor weight. This weight will usually have at least 4 to 5 wires off the sides of the weight, resembling a grappling hook. The rod will be casted in the desired direction as far as possible and then the weight pulled in until it anchors firmly to the sea bottom. Then the rod will be set into a rod holder, making sure that the rod is straight up and down. This will allow you to obtain the most distance and height possible off of the pier for your live bait. Next you will take your fight rod and tie your line to a stinger rig. A stinger rig will usually have at least 3 to 4 hooks incorporating at least 1 treble hook, but a lot of pre-purchased stinger rigs may have all treble hooks. They will also be made of wire. Now, you will take your stinger rig and bait the hooks with a live fish. One of the most common fish used are small Bluefish, usually between 8 and 10 inches, but I have seen larger used successfully. The stinger rigs are applied by hooking the center hook just below the dorsal fin. The next hook will be through the nose of the fish, and the third hook will be in the tail. It is not uncommon to find a rig with a fourth hook with a longer lead, usually a treble. This is considered a trailer hook. This will not be hooked into the fish but will hang below the fish. After baiting your rig, you will lower your anchor line from your anchor rod by removing the rod out of the rod holder and bringing the tip of the rod down to the railing. This will allow you to apply the release clip to the anchor line, and the clip is then attached to the swivel of the stinger rig. Make sure the fight rod is in its rod holder pointed on a 30-degree angle off of the pier next to the anchor rod, then raise the anchor rod slowly and place it back into its rod holder with the rod straight up and down and the line taut. As you do this, you will see your stinger rig with the bait attached hanging off of the release clip and your anchor line. You will then switch the reel on your fight rod to the casting position and slowly lower the fight line and stinger rig with the live bait down the anchor line until the bait enters the water. Make sure you lower the fight line until you see the release clip at least 10 to 12 inches over the water. This will allow the bait to swim in a circle frantically in the water. Then re-engage the fishing reel on your fight rod and set your drag for a run. Once the bait is spotted and hit by a game fish, the stinger rig will release from the release clip and your fight rod will sound. The rest is all you—setting the hook, applying the proper drag during the fight and trying to control your excitement to win the battle against one of these powerhouses! Just remember when targeting King Mackerel, do not be surprised if you find yourself battling a Spanish Mackerel, Tarpon, Ladyfish or some of the unwanted Sharks, but that’s all in the fun of fishing. M
ay has arrived and our waters are coming alive with large amounts of bait moving in along with more species to target. With the water temperatures holding steady above 68 degrees I am excited to see the arrival of our seasonal species ( Inshore): sharks, ladyfish, jacks, mackerel , flounder, and bluefish. Over the last four months on charters our main target species has been redfish , with a back up plan of trout and sheepshead, now with the warmer waters and more species to target brings the excitement of catching a variety of species on each trip. On high water we have been working points, creek mouths , and rips with popping corks with 18-36” leaders with your favorite live or artificial baits to catch mostly sea trout and ladyfish, with a few blues, spanish mackerel, and flounder mixed in. The warmer temperatures have brought plenty of bait back into our inshore waters and with a cast net around low tide we have been catching: small shrimp, finger mullet and menhadden. During low tide we are still fishing around structure ( docks, rocks, blow downs, and shells) using a carolina rig with a #2 circle hook for some steady action of : redfish, flounder, black drum, sheephead, and trout. This has been our first consistent action so far this year with some larger fish inshore ( sharks, bull redfish, and giant black drum), and we have mostly been fishing deeper water near ( inlets, jetties, rocks and bridges) using a carolina rig with 50 pound leader and 7/0 circle hooks with 1/2 blue crab or chuck of fresh fish for bait. The nearshore reef has really come alive lately with the arrival of : weakfish, bluefish, triggerfish , barracuda, sharks, mackerel and spadefish. We have been doing well with the bottom fish using cut bait and jigs, and the schooling fish on the surface have been crushing diamond jigs and soft plastics . Folly Beach Pier Report JUNE Fishing Forecast
T
his is an excellent time of year for pier fishing. Mackerel, drum, seatrout, blues, sheepshead, whiting, flounder, jack, and pompano are all in season feeding near the surf. The only thing out of season is school, so round up the kids and come relax under the Folly sunshine with family and friends. One of the more finicky but interesting fish re sheepshead. They look similar to black drum with a grey hue and black stripes but have key dorsal and fin features that set them apart. Sheepshead feed on crustaceans and bivalves off of the Folly Pier pilings using their humanlike teeth. If the water is clear enough, you can spot sheepshead going from pilling to pilling looking for a tasty barnacle or crab. In addition, they prefer calm seas as it is easier for them to feed. When targeting sheepshead, fiddlers and clams are popular baits to use. Just be sure to follow SCDNR’s rule that circle hooks are required when fishing for sheepshead. The Folly Beach Anglers will be hosting the 11th FREE Take A Kid Fishing Day here on the Folly Pier June 1 from 9:00am-1:00pm. Licenses, rods, and bait will all be provided completely FREE for all youth 16 years of age and younger. In addition, there will be plenty of experienced anglers on-site to help teach how to fish the Atlantic surf and land that big one!! Registration will be day of starting at 8:00am. In addition, our next Cast-Off Fishing Tournament will be Saturday, June 22 from 6:00am – 2:00pm. Furthermore, continue weighing in your daily catches for the summer monthly challenge. Last but not least, come boogie the night away at our next Moonlight Mixer June 21 from 7:00pm11:00pm. Lowcountry Kayak Fishing Summertime Bait Fishing
W
ith June upon us and the water temperatures now into the 70s and staying there, live bait is pouring back into the inshore waters inhabited by our favorite inshore species. May, June, July and August are the months that live bait use is the most prevalent in the low country. Nearly every 6-pack “guide” this time of year has their clients tossing a popping cork with a live shrimp or mullet underneath it. Because it gets the job done! I will admit that as a kayak angler I am an artificial bait angler most of the time. However, there are certainly times when using live bait is the best/only option for the day. Once you have made the decision to throw live bait the first question that comes to mind is “where am I going to get my bait?” there are numerous places around the low country that carry a variety of live bait throughout the summer months to include both Haddrell’s Point Tackle locations, Southside Bait and Tackle, Sewee Outpost, Duncan’s in Goose Creek and Crosby’s Seafood to name just a few. Of course if you go this route, you will need a way to transport them from the shop to wherever you plan to put in and of course there is the cost to purchase the bait. Another option is to buy a small cast net; a 4-6 ft will get the job done from the ramp or your kayak. Netting your own bait will save you a lot of money after some startup costs. However your net will pay for itself in one summer easily and
will help when stopping for bait is not an option. A minnow trap is another way to catch your own fresh bait, you can set one out as you arrive at your launch site and retrieve it just before you launch or if you are close enough to salt water you can set one out overnight and retrieve it in the morning. It’s ideal to set it as near low tide as possible and some recommended bait for the trap includes canned tuna/cat food, dry dog food\treats, leftover dinner scraps, chicken livers, and bacon. With your bait in hand, you now need to know how to fish it. Hands down the two most popular rigs to fish live bait are the popping cork and the Carolina rig.
Both of these rigs are easy to build (or you can buy them already put together) and easy to fish. The popping cork is a great shallow water rig (36ft) and the Carolina rig for anywhere, including deeper water and fishing stronger current areas. You can fish shrimp, mullet and mud minnows from either one effectively. June the 8th will be the Lowcountry Kayak
Angler’s Annual Battle at Paradise charity tournament and it is one of only two tournaments that we allow all baits including live and cut bait and is open to kayak/canoe/SUP anglers. If you are thinking fishing in the LKA Inshore Trail Series (which only artificial baits allowed), you can use attractants Like Pro Cure and enhanced scent artificial baits like Berkley gulp shrimp. Live bait is a great tool to add to your toolbox when inshore fishing especially this time of year. Tips and Tricks for Summer Skiff Maintenance By Scotty Davis
I
ts finally here. Summer. Hopefully you used your boat all year, but if not, here’s a few of our favorite products and tips to make life easy. Although we love being outside, the sun is not really your friend. The same is true for your gear. UV damage is real and can cause things to fade and become brittle. Aerospace 303 Spray Protectant is the answer. Look at it as sunscreen for your stuff. Blocks UV on vinyl, plexiglass, carbon fiber, rubber, plastics, etc. I’ve had great luck with it on seat cushions, the plastic on GPS’s (no screens), life jackets, bumpers; they all look brand new. T-9 Boeshield is another spray product I wouldn’t want to be without. Everything electrical gets spayed down with T-9. Developed by the Boeing Company, it has a higher resistance to saltwater and lasts a good deal longer than WD-40. It also lubricates much better in my opinion. Works on all metals, including stainless, cast iron, brass, copper and aluminum. This is also howI use to keep any trailer hardware from becoming rusty. Bilge pumps, cushion snaps, latches/hatch hardware, steering linkages…you get the picture. If you’ve ever waxed your boat the traditional way, congrats- that’s hard work. I doubt you ever did it again though? Woody Wax to the rescue! Wash your boat, spray Woody Wax all over deck and work in with a broom or brush. Once it dries, come back with a sprayer on a hose (not high pressure) and spray the deck. Your finished! It works great on non skid as well as hulls. Blood, mud, and tears will be washed off with ease. Lastly if you trailer your boat, go ahead and get a hub replacement kit for your trailer and keep in the trunk or toolbox. They are fairly inexpensive and if you blow
a hub, you’ll be leaving the boat on the side of the road to go get one. This little bit of proactiveness can get you back on the road/water much faster. That’s what its about, spending the most time on the water! Enjoy, and happy boating!

Finding And Fishing Summer Ledges

grew up fishing lakes known for large schools of bass that spend the summer months offshore. When we get into the summer and the water temperature starts hitting 80 degrees, it is a safe bet that fish are going to be on offshore structure like ledges, humps and dropoffs. I start looking on main lake areas, on the lower half of the lake, where most of the good summer ledges are. Using the mapping on my Lowrance electronics, I search for places that top out from 12 to 20 feet and drop down to anywhere from 50-60 feet. Bass will start heading out there when the water gets to 70 degrees, but when it hits 80 they will definitely be out there. They spawn with a water temperature of 62 to 64 degrees, so as the water warms after the spawn they will start heading that way. Some fish stay shallow all year. The ones that move out will definitely be schooled up on the ledges as the temperatures approach 80 degrees. The biggest deal is finding the depth range of the fish. When they first arrive on offshore structure, they like 12 to 17 feet. The longer they’re there, the deeper they’ll move. It could take a week or a month, but they’ll drop down into 18 to 25 feet and
maybe even as deep as 30 feet. To find the depth range of the fish, I will graph and look for the bait and then the fish. Usually I can see the bass on my Raymarine units, but I will often fish around a big school of bait in case the bass are hiding right under the thick bait. If I don’t see bait or bass, I won’t make a cast. Electronics are too good these days to fish places just because there were fish there at some point in the past. I always start with a moving bait, such as a deepdiving crankbait, to see if I can get the fish fired up. The biggest ones in the school will bite a crankbait. I like a Strike King 6XD and 8XD fished on a MHX CB907 cranking rod that I built myself with supplies from Mud Hole. I always put new Mustad hooks on the baits. I prefer #2 KVD Triple Grip trebles. I use 10- to 12-pound Vicious fluorocarbon for the 6XD and 15- to 17-pound on the 8XD. I like a slower 5:4:1 gear ratio reel to help crankbaits dive to their deepest depths. When those fish start grouping up out on the ledges, you can really have a lot of fun. Hundred-fish days are possible, and I get excited just thinking about it. When that water temp gets close to 80, it is time to get out deep and get healthy in a hurry come tournament day.

he big catfish are biting at Watts Bar Lake on the Tennessee River between Knoxville and Chattanooga, Tenn. Fifty-four teams of catfish anglers from 11 states converged May 3-5 to test their catfishing skills during a King Kat Tournament Trail Super Event presented by Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s. Competitors were vying for $16,000 in cash and prizes and an opportunity to qualify for the $120,000 Classic Championship to be held in November on Wheeler Lake at Decatur, Alabama. A good bite on day one resulted in some good fish coming to the scales. The top four teams had more than 100 pounds, as Chris and David Roberson took a commanding lead with 146.56 pounds. They also held the Big Kat lead with a 64.64-pound Tennessee River beast. The next closest team was Michael Jordan and Charlie Parsons with 117.70 pounds.
A big fish produced a come-from-behind win and back-to-back champs on Watts Bar. Mike Mitchell, Jackson Mitchell and Rick Sexton came from fifth place on day one to become repeat champions. Last year’s winners brought a two-day total of 228.82 pounds to the scales to claim the win. Their day-two weight was aided by the second big fish of the tournament at 63.58 pounds, just a pound away from the Big Kat of the tournament. Mike and Jackson, of Rogersville, Ala., and Rick from Helenwood, Tenn. earned $6,000 for first place. They found their fish close to structure in the downtown Loudon area. Mike said the fish were relating to rock and wood structure where they tempted them with cut skipjack. They weighed in five flatheads and five blues for their 10-fish limit during the two-day tournament. The runner-up spot went to Jared Coker, from Corryton, Tenn., and Terohn Heinrich, from Knoxville, Tenn. They moved up from fourth place on day one with a two-day weight of 217.98 pounds to earn a check for $2,600. David and Darlene Hill claimed the third-place spot with 195.16 pounds. The Louisville, Tenn. team earned a check for $2,000. Fourth place went to Chris Robinson, of Locust Grove, Ga., and David Robinson, of McDonough, Ga. They had a two-day total of 194.02 pounds that included the Big Kat of the tournament. The Big Kat was a flathead that weighed 64.64 pounds and gave Chris his new personal best. The team earned $1,100 for placing fourth, $1,100 for Big Kat, and $1,000 for the hotel bonus for staying at a Loudon County hotel. Rounding out the top five and pulling out the comeback of the day was Carl Morris Jr., of Johnstown, Ohio, and Rob Parsons, of Mt. Vernon, Ohio. eff Bonawitz, of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, had already caught several 30 pounders from the Susquehanna River on April 6 and was running low on bait. He selected the biggest bluegill from the bait tank, and the fish that ate it turned out to be a 50-pound, 7-ounce new state record flathead catfish. “I could tell it was big. It kept hanging down deep and when it finally came up to the top, we thought it might be a mermaid,” joked Bonawitz. “I’ve fished the Susquehanna for years, and I’ve never caught anything quite like it.” It took 25 minutes to land the fish on an 8-foot, medium-action spinning rod loaded with 25-pound-test mono. Bonawitz kept the fish alive in an aerated container at his home until the following day. On April 7, the fish was officially weighed, setting a new state record for the species. The previous record, caught in 2006, weighed 48-pound, 6-ounces. There are several organizations that claim larger fish as the world record, but IGFA recognizes a 123-pound flathead caught from Elk City Reservoir in Kansas as the All-Tackle World Record. Upon weighing the fish, Bonawitz with assistance from his nephew, Dylan, 8, released the catfish back to the Susquehanna River. “It was such an amazing fish,” said Bonawitz. “I thought the best thing to do was put it back so that maybe the next guy could catch it. I have a feeling this record may not last very long.”
