O
ne of the best places to consistently find fish in the Indian River Lagoon and St. Lucie River is the bridges. Bridges are ideal places for concentrations of fish and usually have the largest snook and tarpon hanging around. The water is deeper, there are ambush points around the bridge abutments, water is funneled through small areas, and baitfish are concentrated there. You need to have current and know the tides. As long as the water’s moving, the action will be better. You need to know the water depth and structures and fish the shadow lines. Bridges are also some of the top night fishing spots, and shadow lines result from the lights over the bridge. Fishing under bridges is easy because you can fish from the shore, wade or fish from a boat. Every way works. There are different techniques for bridge fishing. I use different lures, the main ones are topwaters, Yo-Zuri crankbaits, CAL jigs with a 4” paddletail, and TerrorEyz. With the CAL jigs and TerrorEyz, you want to cast to the abut-
ments and let the jig fall near the bottom and jerk it up. I like the 4” Yo-Zuri minnow crankbaits, which you crank down and then use as a jerkbait. I use 6- to 8-lb. white braid with a 2-foot, clear, 20-lb. leader. If you’re fishing for big fish, you might want to bump it up to 20-lb. braid with 40-lb. leader. A great technique for giant snook is using heavy 1- to 2-oz. Redtail Hawk jigs at night. Fishing at night is awesome, and it’s cool in the summer. St. Lucie River Bridges The three top St. Lucie River bridges are Roosevelt Bridge, Palm City Bridge, Evans Crary Bridge (Sewall’s Point Bridge or Ten Cent Bridge). The Roosevelt Bridge is known for giant snook and the monsters of the deep—Goliath grouper. Fish the south end of the bridge, which gets very shallow around the concrete abutments the farther south you go. The seawall around the marina is also good, and the seawall that stretches under the railroad bridge is excellent. I’ve caught many snook in that area using topwater lures. Both the Palm City Bridge and the Ten-Cent Bridge can be excellent. I like the south side of the Ten-Cent around the large abutments. That’s one of local legend Jim Harter’s favorite spots. Stuart Bridges The north bridge (Jensen Bridge) is awesome and can be waded around as well as fished under from the shore or from a boat. I like fishing under the east section on the north side. Recently, I caught 10 jacks, three mangrove snapper, a mackerel and a snook there in about an hour around 10 a.m. using a 4” Yo-Zuki minnow. The south Stuart bridge is my favorite. I like wading the sandy shallow area on the north side and fishing under the east span. Recently I caught eight snook there on an evening-night trip. n the November edition of Coastal Angler Magazine, I highlighted the stories of boaters who have been victimized by a handful of maritime salvage and towing companies. While it’s been my experience that most of these kinds of companies operate with a high level of professional integrity, some of them resort to predatory practices to rake in substantial fees for so-called “salvage claims.” In one boater’s story, the salvage claim bill was more than $30,000 for minor assistance that took less than five minutes. And this was no fly-by-night operator making this outlandish charge, it was a popular national company. Now two Florida lawmakers from the Tampa Bay area have taken a strong interest in this issue, and they recently filed legislation (Senate Bill 664 and House Bill 469) that would require all maritime salvage and towing companies to provide a written estimate to boaters. This is clearly a common-sense idea that should sail through the Florida Legislature. After all, when you bring your car to a mechanic, Florida law requires that you receive an estimate about what it will cost. It’s hard to argue that boaters on the water shouldn’t have those same consumer protections. The legislators who are being such good friends to boaters are State Senator Dana Young and State Representative Shawn Harrison. Their legislation would require that whenever the cost of a service could exceed $500, the salvor must provide a written estimate that discloses the cost to the boater. Boaters love the freedom of the open water, and it’s important that everyone understand that the legislation does not implement some new over-aggressive government regulation. The proposal does not in any way regulate what these companies may charge or force them to provide services they don’t want to. Thanks to a very simple half-page form, it will make sure boaters can have the costs disclosed up front, so they can make an informed decision. We’ve all heard the joke that “a boat is a hole in the water into which you pour money.” The truth is, boaters love the water and have made a thoughtful, informed choice to devote some of their resources to this joyous pursuit. They shouldn’t be victimized by those who would take even more of their money for no good reason. The proposed legislation will put an end to some unwelcome practices, and boaters throughout Florida should do what they can to see that this proposal becomes law.

hope you all enjoyed Thanksgiving and our absolute joke of a snapper season. I hope you all got to kill a few. Fishing has been awesome as it usually is this time of year. Bunker pods have finally showed up and should continue to stay around a little while longer. Work the pods close to shore for giant red drum, black drum and other species feeding on them. Use a 50lb mono leader with a 1-2 oz egg weight and a 7/0 circle hook. You can knocker rig it or use a fish finder style. Offshore fishing is about as good as it gets. Sailfish, kingfish, blackfin tuna, cobia and more. This is the time to go. Pick your days and be safe. Take those bunker off shore for some great kingfish action in all the normal areas. This time of year, all the commercial guys are out there trying to support their families. Please do not get in their way, it’s already hard enough with all the silly rules and regulations imposed on them/us. When you see them with out there doing circles just give them the space they need to fish. There’s plenty of ocean out there. Mahi fishing has also been picking up. It’s not as good as the spring run but can definitely pay off! Use all the typical dolphin rigs. Ballyhoo and strip baits work just fine. Every trip we are catching a few cobia. So keep a jig handy.

drop in ocean temperatures will bring a variety of fish species into Canaveral Bight this month. Cobia, tripletail, bull redfish, bull whiting, bluefish, flounder, and Spanish mackerel can all be found along these near-shore waters as cold fronts push them south at this time of the year. Most of these fish will strike live shrimp, pilchards, and mud minnows. If you want to specifically target the larger reds use chunk baits. Artificial lures like Rapala X-rap

TARGETING BLACK DRUM By: Paul MacInnis
O
ccasionally inspiration for an article comes from unexpected places. So is the case for this article. Roger Hampton and his construction crew were at my townhouse community for post Irma hurricane repairs. Like any wise angler, Hampton and his crew took advantage of our waterfront location to soak baits while they went about their work. Every afternoon I’d chat with Hampton, not about the restoration work, but about what they caught that day. There was of course catfish, an occasional seatrout or whiting, but the star was black drum. On their best day they caught 15 that ranged from 20 to 27 inches long. That got me thinking about black drum. I’ll admit, with seagrass die-offs and other Indian River Lagoon woes, I’m not catching as many seatrout and redfish as I used to. But I am catching more black drum than ever. Maybe their population is expanding due to reduced competition from trout and reds. One look at a drum (Pogonias cromis) with its chin barbels and underslung mouth and you can tell this fish feeds on the bottom. Although they are occasionally caught on cut bait, black drum feed primarily on mollusks and crabs. Shrimp, clams, crabs and sand fleas are popular drum baits in our local waters. My favorite is crab because they don’t tend to get eaten by catfish and aren’t as readily picked apart by bait stealers as the other baits. One blue crab can yield four baits; each claw and then cut the body in half for two more baits. I use a 4/0 to 6/0 Daiichi circle hook and run it through the elbow joint on the claws. For the body halves, I’ll insert the hook near the “point” at the corner of the shell. If you wiggle and pivot the hook back and forth you can “drill” the hook point through the shell. Just about every major bridge on the Indian River Lagoon has a population of black drum, and some of them are huge. There are a handful of specialists who target these fish, usually by soaking blue crabs on the bottom near pilings. This is a heavy tackle, locked down drag game. Fights are short but intense; either you winch the fish to the boat or the fish gets back into the
pilings and cuts you off. This type of fishing is usually better at night, but there are a few guides like Captain Tom Van Horn who successfully target bridge drum during daylight by cruising along the bridge with their side imaging sonar to spot fish for their clients to cast to. My favorite place to target drum is on the flats where they can be sight fished just like redfish. A live or dead shrimp or chunk of crab cast into their path is likely to get eaten, but the real fun is trying to catch black drum on lures. Drum aren’t the easiest fish to fool on artificials, but I can offer a few tips that should help your success. First, you lure needs to be on the bottom. It is extremely rare to have a drum rise up in the water column so you should use flies, jigs, plastic shrimp or crab imitations with enough weight to get to the bottom quick. Second, use dark colors. Black is my favorite but dark brown or root beer also work. Drum occasionally strike lighter colors, but most of the time black or root beer will out fish lighter colors ten to one. My third tip is to put your lure right on the drum’s nose. A black drum won’t chase down your lure so you have to present it right in front of the fish. I like to imagine a circle about the size of a dinner plate in front of the drum’s nose and then try to drop my offering in that circle. Once I get a lure in front of a black drum I like to twitch it slowly, keeping it on the bottom and in the drum’s line of sight. Hits can be subtle and sometimes are hard to see and feel. If you think you’ve been bit, slowly come tight and be ready to set the hook if you feel weight. Black drum on the flats tend to run from a few pounds on up to about 30 pounds. The same tackle you use for redfish will work for black drum. I personally use a seven foot spinning rod with a 2000-3000 size reel loaded with ten pound test braid. I add about two feet of 20 pound mono or fluorocarbon leader, not so much because drum are line shy, but to give me something to grab when trying to land a fish. For fly fishing I prefer a seven weight fly rod although most folks opt for a nine weight for throwing heavy flies and for a little extra
backbone when pulling on fish that may top 20 pound. Although you want to present your fly on the bottom, floating line works fine because fly fishing for drum is a shallow water game. Weighted black flies that get to the bottom quickly are best with my favorite patterns being the Redfish Worm, Merkin and Clouser Minnow (http://www.spottedtail.com/blog/mosquitolagoon-florida-fly-fishing-tip-little-black-flies/). If you want to keep a black drum for the table, the limit is five fish per day between 14 and 24 inches long, with one allowed over 24 inches. By Paul MacInnis

ith water temperatures dropping, typically into the seventy degree range and sometimes even lower we can expect some things to occur in the shallows of the ‘goon. The water should begin to clear the fish should become more aggressive and they should feed more often. What’s not to like about December? Winter patterns won’t be in full effect as of December, though the importance of shrimp as a primary food source certainly begins now.
Several of my November trips were reliant on live shrimp to ensure a successful outcome for my more “casting challenged” clients. Shrimp imitations and three inch soft plastics designed to look like small mullet or mud minnows (I use the ZMAN Minnowz) will become the “go-to” lures of choice on my boat. Matched to a light rod, reel and line these small lures are awfully effective and provide an enjoyable battle with our slot sized redfish as well as our black drum and large spotted seatrout. A favorite pattern is to be on the water ahead of a winter-time cold front. When everything comes together it’s possible to have the kind of fishing adventure we all dream of. t’s the end of the line for year 2017 and I must say, the year has been interesting… Most Decembers we see a week or two of delightful weather before winter comes into its own. Since both October and November were especially windy I look forward to this short window of awesome weather and the fishing it typically brings! Winter patterns differ in one major aspect than the warm water time frames of the rest of the year. While we will undoubtedly still see plenty of the big black mullet the smaller silver mullet and their fingerlings will become less and less abundant. Also, the pinfish and pigfish population will grow large enough to leave the shallows and finish their lives in deeper waters. The only abundant fin-fish left in the shallows and back water areas will be mud-minnows and some fish-fry from late spawners.
Crustacea become the most important food items for our flats oriented gamefish. Shrimp and crabs lead the list, though clams and snails also become important too. Sure they’re eaten all years, but in the winter months they become crucial! If you’re a “bait” angler live shrimp is a no brainer and of course dead shrimp and cut mullet, etc. always has some appeal to a hungry redfish. erry Christmas from the beach front. Starting in December anglers should note a number of changes in the weather and the fish population on our surf fishing beaches.. First in December the weather is generally consistent with northeast winds, rough seas, cooling water temperatures and some early mornings in the 55 plus range. This is followed by super fishing opportunities and catches of pompano, whiting, jacks, bluefish, black drum, ladyfish and bonnethead sharks. There are more but, I'll run out of space writing them all down. Bottom line, now is the time to catch fish and enjoy our beaches without fighting for parking places. Tip: When you purchase frozen shrimp or any other frozen bait remember to thaw it out fully before using it. If you try to hook a frozen sand flea it will break the fleas shell back and it won’t stay on the hook. Hooking any frozen bait for that matter is like trying to sticking an ice pick thru an ice cube, it just doesn’t work. So for a surf fishing day at
the beach, I suggest you take one of the following; live clams or frozen shrimp for catching the pompano, drum and whiting with one bag of frozen mullet for the ladyfish and bluefish. If we get a good run of big blue fish forget what I said above and go for the blues with cut mullet and shorter rods. This hard fighting fish is fun to catch, eat and/or release as you prefer. Raising tides and on the tide changes have been productive for anglers.

SEBASTIAN INLET TO EAU GALLIE

ecember can be a month with a lot of action around Sebastian. It may not be all big snook and redfish, but if the weather holds out like it did last year with warm temps and small seas, the reds and snook bite will continue to be pretty good from boat and from the shoreline. If the fronts are strong, anglers will be targeting Pompano, Bluefish, Mackerel and Flounder in and around the inlet. If the seas are calm, the weather warms and the winds are down, the bait can
come in nearshore and the action with sharks blues, jacks and pompano can be strong. Anglers targeting Flounder usually start around the first front in November that really cools down the water around Thanksgiving time. Fishing from shore or fishing by are both good options. Anglers fishing from shore will target the shoreline rocks with live finger mullet, mud minnows and small menhaden rigged on a short 1218”, 20 pound fluorocarbon leader rigged on a 3/0-5/0 hook with an egg sinker just above the swivel. Anglers fishing from boats will anchor in areas where the rocks meet the sand with the same rigs. The key to catching the bigger fish is waiting till the tide is slowing and not missing the bite. I like to jig the inlet for
pompano, blues and mackerel in the month of December. Targeting Pompano and Blues, I rig a ¼ ounce to 3/8 ounce jighead with a soft plastic from DOA or I use a Doc’s Goofy jig. If I am targeting Flounder I like to use a ½ ounce or ¾ ounce jigs with DOA paddletails or 4” jerkbaits on the bottom using either pro cure or strips of mullet or pinfish as an attractant. We catch a lot of flounder jigging but not as many bigger fish with that technique. Fishing the Spoil islands as the sun comes up will reward anglers with Trout, Flounder, Ladyfish and Bluefish along with the occasional Flounder and Snook. Fish soft plastics slow along the drop offs around the islands for the best success.

A
December kayak fishing forecast could take on many forms here on the Space Coast. We could easily talk of cooling temperatures effect on feeding patterns, hot products that should be on every Christmas wish list, or what to expect for 2018. I could tell you how reputable safe kayak fishing guides are easy to find and most offer gift certificates that make awesome presents. A recap of 2017 could even be in order and well received. However, this year I feel something a little different is a good direction. A gift from me to you, so to speak! One of my most coveted secrets and frequently asked questions, “Where is a good spot to fish today/next week/whenever”! It seems like such an easy and innocent question. Many times it is that easy and the info will flow forth, to a certain degree. Don’t expect a personal message loaded with pindrops on a maps complete with instructions on where to cast if you pose this question to any Social Media groups. More often than not you’ll be met with joking remarks. Should people be willing to spill their guts to anyone giving hard earned knowledge? I do it on a daily basis as a guide, but you still won’t get a pindrop. I will typically fill anyone in on the bite and what I’m finding in a general area. So how does someone go about finding that perfect spot with consistent action. It’s really simple actually! There is decades of information on any given species that you could ever want to
target. Information including tackle, habitat, and feeding preferences is all for free in an instant at the tips of your fingers. Also we have the ability to scour over Satellite photos that are in my eyes the key to better angling on the lagoons and shallow waters of our area. By taking knowledge gained from information collected in real time and what you’ve learned about a species. You can branch out and explore areas that fit your criteria. Does a certain flat with drop-offs and docks always produce but weekend pressure is too much. Bring up that google maps and find its twin, or several. I almost bet you find a like scenario with fish happy to feed. Does that one section of flat in the IRL where it goes from a foot of water to six feet in a tree lined canal always produce some heavy trout. Find its twin and have fun! After all the idea of these plastic boats is their versatility and willingness to go anywhere. So put that phone to good use! A little work can go a long way for getting fishing pole bent.

y name is Captain Jonathan Moss of Go Castaway Fishing Charters. I am a fulltime Space Coast and Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Guide, and I am addicted to catching Tarpon on Fly. Tarpon are by far my favorite fish to catch! Their acrobatic skills compare only to the trapeze artists of a circus! Their will and determination combined with their incredible strength make Tarpon very difficult to successfully catch. Last month we focused on how to catch juvenile Tarpon on light tackle, and this month's Pro Tip is all about Fly Fishing for Tarpon! Rod and Reel: For juvenile Tarpon up to 40 pounds, a light tackle set up is the way to go. I prefer a 6 or 8 weight sealed drag fly reel paired with a 9'0, 4 piece fly rod. 6 weights are great for smaller fish, but if you come across some larger Tarpon, you may be under gunned. 8 weight fly set ups are a great all-around choice for fly fishing our East Coast lagoons. I prefer to spool my 8 weight reel with a tropical floating fly line and a 15-20lb fluorocarbon leader. If fish are being finicky, try changing to a light leader. But remember, Tarpon have a very abrasive mouth and the lighter the leader, the easier it is for the fish to wear through the line. Flies: When targeting juvenile Tarpon, I prefer to use small shrimp or baitfish pattern flies. Schminnows, Tarpon Toads, and Gurglers are my top choices. Water depth and Tarpon behavior will play a roll in how I make my fly selection. For example, if I can visually see the tarpon laid up under mangroves or docks, or sitting on the edge of a drop off, I will pick a fly that has a lead head or bead chain eye tied on so that the fly will sink faster to the strike zone. If the Tarpon are aggressively feeding on bait at the surface, than I will tie on a Gurgler. Gurglers, when stripped, create a gurgle or popping type of noise. This triggers that incredible top water bite! As far as color choice is concerned, like our soft plastic choices, natural, white, and dark colors work best in our Space Coast waters.
Now that we are ready to go, let's talk about landing these magnificent fish. Remember that in the summer months, our water temperatures rise, and as a result, there is less oxygen in the water. Because of this, Tarpon will "roll" where their backs, dorsal fin and tail come out of the water to take in fresh air. This rolling action is what I look for on the flats when in pursuit of Tarpon. Once located, cast out in front of the Tarpon and begin stripping your fly. In order to trigger a bite, you must put your fly in front of the Tarpon. They need to see the fly move, and it must be right in front of their face. This is why I call Tarpon "my personal favorite frustration." You may make the perfect presentation, but be patient as they don't always eat. Once a Tarpon eats, they will turn their heads, the line comes tight and then you must strip set to set the hook. Strip setting prematurely will only result in pulling the fly out of the feeding Tarpon's mouth. And just the same as using a light tackle spin set up, when the hooked fish feels the tension of a set hook, they will propel themselves out of the water, shaking their head back and forth violently. This is when you will want to implement a Tarpon fishing technique called " Bow to the King" which simply means, pointing your rod tip at the jumping fish. When you bow, or point your rod, you are allowing slack to form in the line. This is important because when a Tarpon is airborne, shaking its head, tension in the line will cause the hook to become dislodged, and you will lose your fish.That is known as jumping Tarpon. "Bowing to the king" takes some time to perfect but will greatly increase your hook-tocatch ratio. Also line management is very important to pay attention to as your fly fishing.If the tarpon surges and takes line, and your line is tangled or caught on something, it could result in a broken line. SHRIMP REPORT
Ben Cubbage pulls in the first gallon of shrimp of the seaon in Edgewater, Florida
T
he shrimp are running! Bye-Bye Hurricane Irma and thank-you for at least saving Volusia County and our shrimping season. I am sad to report that Titusville Pier sustained extensive damages. We have not been given any information concerning a re-open date. This loss is catastrophic to the non-boater community. Titusville pier is an iconic land mark. However, the relief bridge at the mouth of the Max Brewer Bridge parking lot entrance should spit shrimp to the delight of those casting a net. The news is reporting we have a 40% chance of another warm winter. This would make the 3rd year in a row. The take away from this is the water is going to be dirty and we will be plagued with warm water bait fish that cover up our lights and black out our dipping light fields. Good news, is 1 gallon of Edgewater shrimp were reported on November 5th and they were small but around 4” ( my favorite size). This excites me. This means they will grow up to be cowboys and will be our large to jumbo in January and February (5-7 inches). Last season Hurricane Matthew reduced our Volusia shrimp run by killing off a generation of size when it ran over Mosquito Lagoon. We may just have an epic season in Volusia County in 2018. I am seeing higher volume of pink and brown shrimp this November compared to years past. The million dollar question will be, what if any, of 2017 high volume of those rogue jumbo white shrimp

(blue/green tail) will bless our 2018 season. It is simple reasoning, millions of shrimp in close proximity fertilize and lay eggs. Did any eggs get laid in Volusia and Brevard County? We are still are reporting a skunk for white shrimp over summer to early Fall in Daytona and Ormond area. Reports at Railroad Bridge are not encouraging for winter shrimp but that can change in a moment. The fact that shrimpers are scouting and dipping shrimp so early in November could be the a sign we will have an epic season. Does this mean we are going to see the 200 boat weekend brigade again in Volusia? No big deal if we do there is plenty of shrimp to fill freezers for everyone. Dirty water is going to be the biggest problem to overcome this season. Warm water bait fish blacking out the lights are going to the the 2nd problem. Remember, MONOFILAMENT frame nets AKA box nets are illegal. You are required to use green polypropylene (my least favorite, pull very low counts), nylon (my favorite & what I use), cotton or linen bag material. he month of November was just plain terrible for fishing offshore. The wind was crazy the seas were rough and the water was just dirty. If you did venture out you had to go to deep water to find anything. I hope you were able to get out during the RED SNAPPER MINI Season. I was able to get out only one day, because the wind and waves were bad. The mullet run is just about done but a few schools are around. This is the time of year when we will be looking to bottom fish for the last few fish that are still legal to keep, don’t get me wrong we can still get in some great fishing and rod bending fun. If you do go out start looking for fish around the 60-120ft depth This is good for the person who wants to use live bait and slow troll or bottom fish. If you are going to bottom fish you will have to run out to these depths. The grouper will hit the mullet but you will have better success with live pinfish or grunts. Dolphin and Sailfish are a hit or miss at this time, look for rips edges and weed lines for your best action. Slow trolling live mullet or ballyhoo is the best to target these fish. Kingfish are staying near shore also. Slow trolling with live bait and using downriggers should produce some action.
I hope December brings better weather for us so we can make offshore fishing fun again. The Spanish Mackerel will be her for the winter months; this fish is always a fun addition to your fishing trip. If you don’t want to venture offshore you can fish near the shoreline for that ever wonderful tasting pompano. Tarpon are still swimming around the surf but are getting harder to catch as they also make their way to warmer waters. I hope you have enjoyed reading this. o doubt Harvey and Irma hit our southern coastline very hard. We as communities mobilized immediately to come to the aid of friends, neighbors and in many cases total strangers. If you fish or live on the coast, no one is a complete stranger. We’ve had several wet years, and these hurricanes have added more water to our estuary systems. They’ve also pushed out the shrimp early this year into the main bays, so that might help a little this year in terms of the typical winter big trout pattern. There will still be a large shrimp crop that will come into the bays later, and it’s the exit of the shrimp and menhaden that typically triggers the typical winter big trout pattern and a move to a more mullet, perch or white bait diet. Big trout also target sand trout or Gulf trout that are working shrimp. So despite the fact that big trout don’t eat a lot of shrimp, the movements of shrimp will still pull big trout to the main bays in the fall. The key is locating trout that ignore this pattern and remain shallow feeding on mullet, perch, white bait and small trout. Also, watch your salinity levels as big sow trout begin to move out of areas that are below 5ppt salinity on the bottom. You might have to target areas closer to inlets and passes this winter to find those big sows in the mud and grass, and mud and oysters. Tobin created TroutSupport.com. A
s a professional angler and guide for 30 years, there’s something I’ve noticed about the mechanics of bass fishing that differentiates a pro from most amateurs. As soon it hits the water, a pro is in control of the lure. A common mistake I see while fishing with novice anglers is control. They cast their lure, they let it free fall, and as soon as it hits the grass it hangs up… a wasted cast. In most situations where I do most of my fishing, on Lake Okeechobee, the lure should be working the instant it hits the water. A pro casts his lure, and as soon as it hits the water the reel is engaged, the rod is up and the lure is working efficiently all the way back to the boat. Learn how to cast and engage the lure with your rod up; this is very important. I see so many anglers with their rod pointing at their lure on the retrieve. Generally, if your rod is pointing at the lure, bad things can happen. You are not in control, and you can actually keep a fish from getting the lure. A big bass usually sucks a lure in from a distance. If you don’t have your rod up, you can keep the lure from reaching the fish. The action of your rod will let the lure go to the fish, and you will hook them deeper in their mouths. When you are fishing moving lures like crankbaits and spinnerbaits, you need a rod that has a softer tip for this reason. If you are using a stiff rod and braided line that has no stretch, when that big bass hits your lure you will feel the bite but you will keep the fish from getting it. Many years ago, Gary Cline—one of the best anglers ever—realized that when graphite rods came on the scene back in the 70s that he was losing a lot more fish than when he used the softer glass rods. He went back to the soft-tip glass rods for all his moving baits, and it made a big difference. Since then, rod companies have made graphite rods with softer tips. I remember a tournament in Texas many years ago. I was casting a Shad Rap on my glass rod, and my partner was fishing the same lure on his new graphite rod. All the fish he caught were on the back hook, while every bass I caught had the whole lure deep in their mouths. This taught us a lot about how the action of a rod can help you catch more fish. Bottom line is: when you make a cast, engage the reel as soon as the lure hits the water and hold your rod up to feel the lure. This tip will help you catch more fish and make you a better angler. oat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) has estimated that more than 63,000 recreational boats were damaged or destroyed as a result of both Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, with a combined dollar damage estimate of $655 million to boats alone. These numbers are strikingly close to 2012’s Hurricane Sandy, which remains the single-largest industry loss with more than 65,000 boats damaged and more than $650 million in estimated losses. Breaking down the 2017 season storms, Hurricane Irma damaged or destroyed 50,000 vessels with approximately $500 million in recreational boat damage. About 13,500 boats were damaged or lost costing $155 million in boat damage as the result of Hurricane Harvey. “These two storms were as different as night and day,” said BoatUS Marine Insurance Program vice president of claims Rick Wilson. “The boats that were hit the hardest by Harvey were located on a relatively small slice of Texas coast, while we saw damage to recreational vessels from Irma in every corner of Florida. “While Hurricane Irma’s losses are significant, it could have been much worse,” added Wilson. “Irma ultimately traveled up Florida’s west coast and not the east, which was initially forecast. And while locations in the right front quadrant of the storm such as Big Pine Key and Marathon were hit hard with a Category 4 storm, Irma lost strength as it approached the mainland and swept up Florida. As the storm passed east of Tampa Bay, waters receded and came back gradually, also lessening surge damage.”
