Stronger in the Broken Places: Aboard Vantage Deluxe World Travel Heroes Cruise

E

rnest Hemingway once wrote; "The world breaks everyone and afterward many are stronger in the broken places." These words rang true this week on Vantage Deluxe World Travel's river cruise up the Seine to the D-Day landing beaches in Normandy, France. This is always an emotional journey for Vantage passengers, many of whom are veterans or the sons and daughters of those brave young men who made a collective sacrifice so that the world could breathe free.

This trip took on special significance this week as 19 wounded Israeli soldiers from the organization, Brothers for Life, joined for the 2017 Heroes Cruise. They are

all young men; the same age or perhaps a little older than the soldiers that fought their way onto Omaha Beach or climbed the 90 foot cliffs of Pointe du Hoc and like the heroes of World War II, these Israeli soldiers have also fought for freedom and for the security of their home country and also the United States. In doing so, they have suffered through unspeakable trauma and are now using their brotherhood of arms to restore their bodies and their spirits. Each veteran joined this cruise with an open heart to all others as they continue to mend those wounds in the broken places.

Every combat soldier showed a level of compassion and grace for the other passengers that speaks to who they are.

They walked side by side with Vantage passengers (often

times, lending a hand of needed support) mesmerized as they toured Claude Monet's home and gardens in Giverny, they hiked on the steep climbs to Chateau Gaillard in Les Andelys and the highest peak of the port city of Honfleur.

They serenaded passengers with a hearty Happy Birthday when candles were lit and they danced the Can Can in the lounge.

These Heroes have a thirst for life that has left an indelible impression on all passengers. But it wasn't until they left the beauty of Giverny and Honfleur for the barbed wire laced cliffs of Normandy that everyone got to learn more about these Brothers for Life. Before they reached the landing beaches, one Israeli soldier said that he could "smell the battlefield" and that sense brought back stark memories of his own combat experiences.

Another said that his father was the only member of his family to have survived the Holocaust.

Go Fish Dan: Coastal Angler December The Tautogs of Long Island Sound

by J&B Tackle to meet the crew and get our gear in order. With our leisurely place, we finally hit the water at about 9:30 a.m.

W

ith the warm weather of 2017 continuing into November, I was lucky enough to get in some late season fishing off the shores of Connecticut, thanks to JB Sportfishing.

Based in Niantic, Connecticut, JB Sportfishing is the charter boat arm of J&B Tackle and the Douton family, which has been helping people fish the Niantic area since 1972. These days, it’s Kerry Douton that runs the show and Captain Kerry had invited me to go after tautogs, also known as blackfish, in Long Island Sound. Brown- and dark olivecolored with white blotches and plump, elongated bodies, tautogs can reach several feet in length. They were also a popular delicacy in the 18th and 19th centuries.

On many fishing trips you’re up at the crack of dawn and hit the water before sun-up.

In this case, we were up early but we didn’t get out until a few hours later. Instead, we 2 BOSTON | DECEMBER 2017

The plan was to use this opportunity to make a video for Dexter Knives. I’m responsible for some of their content on social media channels and we were hoping to capture a filleting segment. Of course, our plan depended on actually catching those tautogs, but in the days leading up to our trip Captain Kerry was quite reassuring, telling us, “Don't worry, we're going to get out there and find

That meant there were five of us—myself and Captain Kerry, plus Ryan, Justin and Evan from the JB team—on a journey that started from the Niantic River. A few miles later we were on Long Island Sound, where there are more than 100 species of fish, from striped bass, bluefish, summer flounder and scup to hickory shad, black sea bass and tautog. As we would find out pretty quickly, there are also loads of false albacore; if I had known they would be jumping and swimming around us for the majority of the day, I would have brought my light tackle setup.

Still, we were after tautogs and they didn’t disappoint. These blackfish are notoriously

he time is finally here! It is time for Fall fishing on the ponds, that usually means for many fishing for smallies or largemouth, or one of my favorites, trout. Trout are an aggressive fish that a lot of people like to eat and a lot of people like to catch.

Trout are a very common fish to catch. They tend to stay close to each other or in small groups. A very good technique for catching trout is to troll the edges of

the pond. To troll the pond we usually use bright colored spinners or swim baits. Early Rise Outfitters: December 2017

By Patrick Barone December is a transition month for me. Getting closer to fishable ice, it gets harder every day to convince myself to take the boat out. This was the scenario I was faced with when I decided to start fly fishing in the winter for trout. If you are considering trout fishing in winter, here are a few suggestions after hundreds of winter days on the water.

Fish flowing water. River currents are the waiters and waitresses of the river. They deliver all types of insect life to waiting fish. When a trout is looking

to eat, they make their way to a section of river with good water flow. The highly oxygenated water of riffles, fast runs, and small waterfalls will hold populations of fish. This is a result of a concentration of food, and good water conditions in a large area. Pay close attention to the seams where faster-moving water currents meet slower sections; these areas require minimal effort for trout to hold, but offer close proximity to the fastest water currents for both food and safety.

Fish the entire depth column.

With your area chosen, it is very important to search multiple depths. I always like to have the maximum number of flies allowed by fishing regulations tied on. I make sure that the bottom fly is dragging along the bottom, with the remaining selection spread to cover as much water as possible. When using a dropper fly, use a top fly that is visible to you in the water when you can. This will allow you to see where your flies are going, and to adjust depth as needed to cover the water column better.

Dress warm. It sounds obvious, but remember it is always easier to take off layers than add the ones you don’t have.
