Boaters and anglers up and down the east coast know there’s an important season between the holidays and spring: Boat Show Season!

Timed perfectly to gear-up for some of the best fishing of the year, the National Marine Manufacturers Association’s (NMMA) line-up of premier boating and outdoors shows are the venues where shoppers and dreamers alike can peruse the latest the industry has to offer. s the holidays approach and temperatures drop, many will feel the need to scratch that fishing itch. There is no better place to catch your next trophy this winter than down in sunny south Florida.

If it’s monster offshore pelagics you seek, winter offers some of our best fishing. Take your boat or book a charter out of Stuart, Fla.—aka “The Sailfish Capital of the World”—and you are sure to land a sailfish, a bucket list fish for many. Mahi, cobia, kingfish and wahoo will also be biting. Our average January high of 74 degrees will also quickly quench your thirst for warmer weather.

North of Palm Beach, we do a lot of trolling, and south you’ll find live baiting very popular, so don’t forget your sabiki rod.

No boat? No problem.

We have multiple beach-access points where you can catch your fill of Pompano, whiting, bluefish, snook and more, maybe even a permit or bonefish. In Martin County, check out Stuart Beach, Hobe Sound Beach and Tiger Shores.

Excellent jetties and piers include Juno Pier, Ft. Pierce Inlet and Sebastian Inlet, where I recently limited out on redfish one day and caught an inshore slam the next!

Fishing off the beach, a “pompano rig” will catch a ton of species and even cut bait on the bottom with a pyramid sinker will work. For lures, I like topwaters in the morning and after that I throw lipped crankbaits and paddletail swimbaits.

Regarding inshore saltwater, I love fishing from the Saint Lucie Inlet north to Ft. Pierce. Under the docks and along the mangroves you will find snook, redfish and trout, as well as flounder and drum in deeper holes and channels. If you can’t find any mullet to net, a simple live shrimp and a bobber will catch everything and anything. If you do not have a boat, walk the shoreline for some incredible wade fishing. I caught my first snook wading the docks in Ft. Pierce many years ago.

Don’t worry, I didn’t forget about you bass guys! Our incredible bass fishing this time of year starts with the largemouth spawn and plenty of crappie on Lake Okeechobee. I also love Camp Mack in Lake Wales, Fla. Mix up your freshwater game with abundant exotic species fisheries featuring clownknife fish, peacock bass, hybrid bass and even the bullseye snakehead. You will catch exotics in any of the Lake Clarke, Lake Osborne or Lake Ida chains in Palm Beach County.

The families gathered in Terminal E at Logan Airport before their flight to Frankfurt, Germany to receive their special Heroes jackets from Vantage Heroes Program co-founder Patricia Lewis.

Yarmouth Police Department (MA): Sergeant Sean Gannon was shot and killed in the line of duty in 2018 as he and his canine partner, Nero, were searching a home for a wanted individual. Sgt. Gannon served with the Yarmouth Police Department for seven and a half years.

His wife Dara and her brother will attend.

Falmouth Police Department (MA): Officer Ryan Moore was shot in the line of duty while responding to a disturbance call in 2018. Moore was forced to retire due to his injuries. Officer Moore and a guest will attend.

“Police officers put their lives on the line to protect the public every day and it’s our honor to support these families who are so significantly impacted by these life-altering situations,” said Lewis. “They have suffered tremendous losses and our mission is to provide them with a unique and restorative opportunity to share their strength with one another in one of the most beautiful places in the world.”

Boston Police Department (MA): Officer Jeremiah Hurley was killed in the line of duty while investigating a call regarding a suspicious package in 1991. The package exploded, killing him and wounding the other officer on the scene. Officer Hurley had served with the Boston Police Department for 23 years and was assigned to the Bomb Squad. His wife Cynthia and her daughter will attend.

This year’s Heroes Cruise features a free, all-inclusive eight-day European cruise, the Heart of Germany, which takes travelers along the Rhine River through Germany with key stops in the historic cities of Bamberg and Heidelberg from November 6 to November 13, 2019.

The voyage is specially designed to provide survivors of tragedy with an opportunity to bond, honor the memory of loved ones and to share common healing experiences.

Additional Hero families departed from California. They include: Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Department (CA) - Deputy David Piquette, was killed in an automobile accident in 2006. Deputy Piquette had served with Los Angeles County Sheriff 's Department for 10 years. His wife Shawna and their twins will attend.

$20,000 Environmental Leadership Scholarships for Massachusetts High School Seniors The Henry David Thoreau Foundation awards collegiate scholarships of up to $20K to eight to ten students graduating from public or private high schools in Massachusetts. As Henry David Thoreau Scholars, these select high school seniors may enroll in any college and university in the world while they major or minor in an environmentally related field.

alumni have published articles in the Henry David Thoreau Environmental Digest, initiated environmental projects on planetary health, and formed companies and organizations including the animation company, Oxbow, with clients including WildAmerica and the Center for Food Safety, satellite imagery startup CrowdAI, and the nonprofit energy organization Equitable Origin.

The Henry David Thoreau Scholarships are up to $20,000 four-year scholarships awarded to eight students graduating from public or private high schools in Massachusetts. High school seniors awarded the Henry David Thoreau Scholarships can enroll in any college and university in the world while they major or minor in an environmentally related field. Henry David Thoreau Scholars are encouraged to enroll in internships or study abroad to broaden their awareness and understanding of environmental issues.

The Henry David Thoreau Foundation further assists its scholarship winners by identifying environmentally related internships, offering internship stipends, and providing networking opportunities. Upon graduation from college, Henry David Thoreau Scholars are inducted into the Henry David Thoreau Society. A sign of success of the Henry David Thoreau Foundation’s mission to foster environmental leadership is the support past scholarship winners provide to present scholarship winners.

EDITORIAL What To Do When You’re Not Fishing

As we head into the winter months we won’t be headed out on the water as much as we like. Instead, let’s talk about a few ways will can still get our fishing fix but not lose a couple of fingers to frostbite.

Organize your fly box and fishing equipment When it gets cold the best thing you can do is get organized so the next fishing opportunity you have you can run out the door without missing a beat. I always like to start by organizing my fly boxes as they tend to get jumbled up during a busy fishing season. I also go through my fishing bag and waders, throwing out any odds and ends that don’t belong there. Finally, it’s important to replenish your supply of tippet, leader, strike indicators, split shot, flotant, etc.

Patch your waders We’ve all gotten in the water when it’s still freezing cold and realized we forgot to patch the hole we got that previous fall.

Don’t let yourself get doused in ice-cold water again! Curl up by the fire, turn on your favorite tv show and patch those waders.

Get on google maps and start planning out spots When its time to go fishing again, the last thing I want to do is spend an hour or two looking up new spots to try out. Spend some time on google maps pinning various fishing locations and access points in advance so you’re not left scrambling to find a spot right before you head out the door.

Tie flies If you’ve never dabbled in tying some of your own flies, it can be a great way to pass the time in the cold winter months.

Most fly shops will have a fly tying starter kit and there are at least one zillion books and youtube videos dedicated to the subject. Start tying flies at your own risk, however, because it can become habit-forming and feathers aren’t cheap.

Plan your fantasy trip to New Zealand Finally, once the cold settles in, we all start to imagine getting out of town to somewhere warm. A trip down to the Florida Keys, the Yucatan Peninsula or just getting out of this hemisphere and heading down to New Zealand is a great way to shake off those dreary winter blues. Maybe it won’t be this year, but start bookmarking some warm weather fishing destinations for future trips or at least to help you forget it’s actually snowing outside.

While there still is plenty of fishing for the hearty during the winter months, sometimes it’s nice to just curl up and be warm inside. Don’t let the winter stop you from your fishing obsession as you take some time to get organized for next year’s fishing trips.
