The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC) has two Shark Center museums for Cape residents and visitors to explore, each with its own unique and engaging exhibits. Attracting over 20,000 guests each year, the Shark Centers have become popular Cape destinations.

This year, the Shark Center Chatham has a new interactive touch screen that allows visitors to peel back the layers of a shark to develop an understanding of its anatomy and physiology. This exhibit was created in partnership with the Georgia Aquarium and is sure to be a shark enthusiast favorite!

In addition to exhibits, the Shark Center Chatham hosts a series of educational programs for toddlers and early elementary aged students. The younger audience of shark learners can enjoy a shark story hour on Tuesday and Thursday mornings throughout the summer.

The Conservancy’s Shark Center Provincetown, located at 16 MacMillan Wharf, is designed to simulate an underwater experience through customized lighting, imagery and life-sized shark models. The center features a collection of shark jaws from various species found throughout New England, and an interactive “sand table” that demonstrates how sharks and seals travel around the sandbars of the Outer Cape.

At Shark Center Provincetown, visitors are also introduced to a few of the 600 individual white sharks that have been identified through AWSC’s research efforts. Guests learn how free-swimming sharks are tagged off the coast of Cape Cod and can continue to follow these sharks using the nonprofit’s White Shark Logbook and Sharktivity App.

For those interested in seeing white sharks in the wild, AWSC offers private shark charters providing guests with the opportunity to become part of an elite group of adventures as they witness the apex predators in their natural habitat and get a firsthand understanding of AWSC’s

Gosnold Behavioral Health Takes Part In 7th Annual Charter Cup Fishing Tournament

The 7th Annual Charter Cup Fishing Tournament, sponsored by EJ Jaxtimer Building held on July 12, 2023, at Baxter’s Fish ‘N Chips in Hyannis, MA. The annual fishing tournament’s mission is for local businesses and charter fishing boats to come together to raise money for local charities in need of funding.

Since its inception in 2017, the Charter Cup Fishing Tournament has raised over $1.7 million, including $500,000 this year. The tournament gives 100% of the profits raised to participating nonprofits that provide much-needed services, including emergency flights for critically ill patients, physical/mental fitness for people in recovery, programs for physically/mentally challenged adults, and equitable healthcare for the homeless. It also supports kids fighting cancer, early childhood education, addiction intervention and rehabilitation, local law enforcement efforts, at-risk youth programs, affordable housing projects, and affordable healthcare for people with diabetes.

team at Beacon Marine is committed to delivering exceptional service and handling every job with the same dedication and attention to detail.

Co-Owner Jonathan Hagenstein started the company in partnership with longtime friends.

“We have a successful partnership in the work that we do, and a great friendship outside of work,” Hagenstein explained.

Giving back to the community they serve is a big part of Beacon Marine Construction and its culture, so the idea of getting involved in the event and supporting Team Gosnold was a no-brainer for Hagenstein.

Gosnold’s mission and work really resonated with Hagenstein when deciding to charter a boat for the team.

“A lot of the issues that Gosnold works to resolve have impacted my close friends,” he said. “I grew up on the Cape when the opioid epidemic was just getting underway and several of my friends and neighbors went down a rough road. Luckily, they were able to come out of it with the help of nonprofits like Gosnold, that foster healing and inspire individuals and communities to live healthier lives.”

This year, 14 charities

One local business that supported Team Gosnold during the Charter Cup was Beacon Marine Construction, a leader in residential and commercial waterfront improvement throughout Cape Cod and Southeastern Massachusetts. The

“We have been hoping to get involved in the Charter Cup for a couple of years and we were very excited to participate for the first time this year,” said Hagenstein. “We decided to sponsor Gosnold because of the life changing impact the organization has on the surrounding community. It was a simple choice, and we look forward to giving back to the community.”

With the help of partners like Beacon Marine Construction, the event was a successful one for Gosnold. The Gosnold team raised $11,000, money that will be put back into the community by supporting Gosnold’s comprehensive programs and treatment options.

“We are fortunate to be in a position where we can give back and sponsoring Gosnold for the Charter Cup is a great way to have a huge impact on the local community,” Hagenstein said.

Boston’s

August is a hot month with warm water temps. This is typically the month most consider the slowest, but there are still some excellent fishing opportunities to take advantage of. The two species we focus on the most in August are striped bass from kayaks and vertical jigging for lake trout in our boat. Both offer great opportunities for non-stop action if you know where and when to look.

New Hampshire Fishing Forecast

By Tm Moore

Early mornings will still o ffer great surface action for schoolie stripers. Once the sun hits the water the fish will move deeper in search of cooler water. Surface plugs, flies, and shades will all catch fish. Once the fish go down, vertical jigs and live bait will be your best bet, especially for larger fish. In August, our biggest fish almost always come at night using live eels. Drifting or slow-trolling eels in shallow water after dark is a very effective technique, as the bigger fish will wait until the sun sets before moving into shallow water in search of food.

On the freshwater side of things, lake trout become extremely predictable as they school up in deep water. We look for fish in 100’ of water over deeper holes. I’m even more excited for this year, because my latest signature series lure from Daddy Mac Lures, the Nervous Minnow, is out and has this fishery written all over it. Vertical jigging in August is a num- bers game. Our clients can expect to count between 10 and 50 fish in a four-hour trip. The key to this fishery is to get there early. The fish rarely bite in the dark, but as soon as there is some light in the sky expect things to pick up in an instant.
