eDITOR’S nOTE With summer winding down, road safety comes to minds. Of course, safety is uppermost in our minds at all times of the year, and so it should be important at all times of the year. Tourists will be parking their R.V.s soon, and the highways should return to normal.

We recently returned from our, 8-day 3700km. distribution trip, where something became quite apparent. Traffic laws are being used as suggestions or guidelines rather than laws, and no one seems to monitor their surroundings. On the trip, we were passed at high rates of speed on the highway in no passing zones, and even in no passing constructions zones, where fines for exceeding the speed limit are doubled. Stop signs are treated as a suggestion, and some drivers don’t read the road in front of them to watch for unknown hazards that may be lurking. Be prepared to react to the unknown so you can take the appropriate action. When you see that a lane in front of you is closing down or disappearing, slow down and take the steps necessary to safely make a lane change without blocking traffic in an unsafe position. Be aware of your surroundings!

On the lighter side, throughout the summer we attended many events in support of fundraising for various charities sponsored by the transportation industry. There many events happening in the fall: trade fairs, job fairs, show and shines, and convoys.

The Southern Alberta Truck Exposition

On July, the 15th The Southern Alberta Truck Exposition completed another successful show. Kani and Lane Jacobson and their team worked tirelessly to make the show a success. Not only does the show highlight the transportation industry, but it is an invaluable recruiting tool, with 500 applications submitted for the 120 positions available. This alone makes the show worthwhile.

On the fun side. the static displays were led by Gord Cooper and the famous “Smoking Gun” - the world holder for the fastest semi super diesel. The Show and Shine attracted 50 trucks in various configurations, with awards being presented in all categories lead by the People’s Choice and Mayor’s Choice Awards(pictures provided by Silly Cruiser Photography). Mayor Spearman assisted in the day by officiating over the opening, and presenting the Show and Shine awards. He also got firsthand experience at the wheel of the AMTA simulatorI We look forward to bigger and better in 2018. Keep up the good work.
