AFRC - SPORTS PROGRAMS & ORGANIZATIONS YOUTH BASKETBALL PROGRAM We offer an instructional basketball program for boys & girls emphasizing fundamentals, good sportsmanship, participation, team work and fun! Teams will practice twice a week (Mon-Thurs). Games are held on Friday nights or Saturdays. Registration is on a first come, first served basis and participants will be placed in a selection pool and randomly assigned to teams in their respective age groups.

Teams are coached by volunteers-team assignments will be released at the Team Meet and Greet (see details to right).

Participants must be the exact age group registered for on the first day of season practice.

Volunteer Coaches needed for both Fall & Winter Programs. Referee positions (paid) needed for Winter Program.

ALAMOGORDO FAMILY REC CENTER ACTIVITY REGISTRATION INFORMATION All registrations are on a first-come first-served basis. All registrations must be made at AFRC or online prior to participation in an activity. Instructors are not able to take money or registrations. All participants must sign a liability waiver. Anyone under 18 must have a parent/legal guardian sign a consent form and liability waiver. Registration in an activity does not guarantee a place in future activities. It is the responsibility of the patron to attend scheduled classes, we are not able to provide refunds for missed classes. Activity scholarships are available for children of qualified families in need.

ACTIVITY WITHDRAWALS/REFUNDS Requests for an activity withdrawal/refund must be made one week prior to the start of the activity to receive a refund.

Exceptions will be made for an injury/illness (a Doctor’s note may be required). There is a $10.00 administrative fee per participant for a withdrawal/refund unless the activity is cancelled by AFRC.

ACTIVITY TRANSFER Requests for an activity transfer must be made one week prior to the start of the activity. Transfers will be accommodated as long as there is space available in the activity. An administrative fee is not generally charged for transfers. However, AFRC reserved the right to charge a $10.00 administrative fee if multiple transfers are requested (over 3).

ACTIVITY MINIMUM/MAXIMUM If the minimum number of participants for an activity is not met three days prior to the first day of the activity, the activity will be cancelled, participants will be notified and provided refunds.

AFRC is committed to providing a variety of aquatic activities & events lap swim, public swim, swim lessons, aqua-exercise classes, private rentals and more.

Please contact us if you have any questions or requests - afrc@ci.alamogordo.nm.us or 575-439-4142. The pool’s operating season is anticipated to be an eight month season - open from early spring until late fall. A pool schedule will be available on the City’s website ci.alamogordo.nm.us - and will be updated when appropriate. The pool schedule is subject to change due to weather, staffing and/or maintenance issues. To verify pool hours please give us a call.

SAFETY RULES! Age Restrictions • Children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by an adult at all times .

• Children 6 years and under must be accompanied by an adult in the water, remain within arms reach at all times and maintain a safety ratio of 1 adult / 2 youth.

Deep End Swim Test • All youth (ages 17 & under) are required to take and pass a annual swim test before they are allowed to swim in the deep end of the pool.

• Children that do not pass the first time may take the test again at another time if desired.

PARK RESERVATIONS

Alamogordo has a well established park system available for public use daily. For those that wish to hold an event or activity within the park system (e.g., party, tournament), there are designated park facilities and areas that may be reserved for a fee. A park reservation provides the individual or organization ‘priority use’ of the designated area, those without a reservation will be asked to relocate to a different park area or site.

Alamo Senior Center offers

arts & crafts, bingo, bridge, billiards, field trips, lapidary, music, quilting,

silversmithing, table tennis, and more for your enjoyment. Our health and wellness activities include: balance, belly dancing, body toning, chair exercise, gentle stretching, line dance, square dance, strength training, walk aerobics, walking, yoga, Zumba, and more. Membership-based The Alamo Senior Center is membership-based. For those 60 years of age or older participating in an activity (i.e. Meals, fitness, transportation) at the Senior Center, a required assessment must be conducted for new consumers and a reassessment for returning members.

Assessment/Reassessment The State & Federal Government requires an assessment/reassessment for those 60 years of age or older that receive services at the Senior Center. An initial assessment must be conducted for new consumers and a reassessment for all returning members every 6 to 12 months thereafter. The assessment/reassessment process is a packet of basic questions to include ADL’S/IADL’S and a Nutritional Health Screening Tool. This process is conducted by a staff member and can take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes.

Grab & Go The Alamo Senior Center offers Grab & Go service for those 60 years of age or older, Monday – Friday from 11:00 – 12:30, except on holidays. The Grab & Go service consists of the same hot, nutritious meal the Senior Center has always provided. Just get in line, pull up to our Grab & Go pop-up, provide your name, date of birth & last 4 digits of social security number with a good working phone number. Staff will reach out to conduct an initial assessment for new members and a reassessment for returning members.

Senior Volunteer Programs What is the Senior Companion Program (SCP)?

The SCP mission is to encourage Otero County senior citizens aged 55 and older to serve as senior companion volunteers for our homebound and frail elderly. SCP volunteers will work with homebound clients to enable them to maintain their independence in their own homes longer and to have a better quality of life. Our program office staff will provide the training, encouragement

and support that the senior companion volunteers need in order to carry out program duties and achieve their own personal goals.

What is the Foster Grandparent Program (FGP)?

The FGP mission is to encourage Otero County senior citizens aged 55 and older to serve in our local classrooms as foster grandparents tutors and mentors to students who need one-on-one help with academic and social skills. Volunteers will develop a supportive intergenerational relationship that will enable these students to achieve their educational and personal goals. The program office staff will provide the training, encouragement and support that the volunteers need in order to carry out their program duties and to achieve their own personal goals.

“My Yard Project” The vision for the My Yard Project is to find yards in Alamogordo that are in great condition and recognize the owners for their effort in Keeping Alamogordo Beautiful! WASHINGTON PARK The Desert Critters Trail is located at Washington Park in Alamogordo, NM, and is a scavenger-hunt-style trail, offering family fun and encouraging physical activity. Otero HEAL (Healthy Eating Active Living) developed this idea with the intention of getting people to walk more often, learn about local nature, and enjoy time together outdoors. Washington Park provides ADA-accessible sidewalks throughout.

Futsal is FIFA's official indoor soccer game. It is small-sided (5 vs. 5), played on a smaller pitch (roughly basketball court-sized), and with a smaller ball. The game is played on a flat indoor pitch with 2m height x 3m width (6.5'x10') goals and a size 4 ball with a reduced bounce. The Game favors ball control and quick decision-making. Futsal is normally played on an indoor court with a smaller, low bounce ball. Unlimited substitutions are allowed, as players consistently are running on and off the court.
