Note from the Editor

Networking Community Ideas Principle 7: Concern for Community, guides cooperatives to work for the sustainable development of their communities through policies approved by their owners. Co-ops have been so involved with their communities they made community involvement one of their seven principles. In researching these co-op activities I was impressed by their sheer volume and variety. I mused about a better world full of industrial co-ops doing the same. Our purpose is to encourage more co-op community activities by networking a multitude of examples and other pertinent information.

If you are interested in starting a community activity at your co-op you will be able to find some interesting ideas in these pages. There are 64 activity examples from 46 co-ops. We made the examples brief so we could include more. Some of the activities are similar but each coop applies its own special twist. For more information about an activity that you would like to consider for your co-op, go to the co-op’s website and contact us through our website. Some would be fairly easy to start and only requires a desire to do them. Each co-op has its own process for starting activities. On page 6, Beth Martin at Menomonie Co-op describes the spirit and process involved in starting their newest activity, a mirco-grant program for local farms. Contact your co-op’s staff and/or Board to find out how to start your idea at your co-op. On page 9, we choose to feature three co-ops who submitted their overall programs as examples of the range and number of activities that co-ops are typically doing. Sunsets West shows us that even smaller co-ops have the resources to be all about community. A full listing of all the co-op natural food stores and organizations is included in the back portion of the magazine. It is a condensed version from our former publication, The National Co-op Directory, which now lists the co-op’s name and address. There is also an alphabetical listing of the co-ops and a national map of the co-op locations. More information about the co-ops is available on our website at www.nationalcoopdirectory.com including website address, hours and other helpful data. So let us know if you are starting a community activity at your co-op and if we can be of help.

Getting Started

By Beth Martin

Menomonie Market Food Co-op is a forty-five year old community owned food co-op located in a small college town in northwestern Wisconsin. In 2018 the co-op launched a new micro-grant program called Fund our Foodshed. The grant is funded almost entirely by co-op customers through their round-ups at the register and a donation on behalf of the co-op. “Part of the mission of Menomonie Market is to strengthen our local food system and help create a thriving, healthy community. This grant program is a big leap in that direction and is powerful because it harnesses the power of community.” says GM Crystal Halvorson. “Grant money donated from both the co-op and co-op customers directly supports production of the high quality, unique, and nutritious food that our community demands. And it helps newer Chippewa Valley farmers stabilize their operations.” General manager, Crystal Halvorson and marketing manager, Beth Martin began brainstorming how co-op customers could more deeply be part of bringing the co-op Ends statement to reality when the idea of utilizing what many co-ops already make use of - a round-up at the register program - sparked an idea to use those funds for a micro grant program to help small local farmers strengthen their operations. The program is both in alignment with co-op Ends and fills a much needed funding gap for many new and growing farming operations in the Chippewa Valley of Wisconsin.

Formal planning began in early 2018. Martin surveyed how other co-ops around the country utilize both their round-up and micro grant programs and created a brief and recommendation for Halvorson and the MMFC board. Once approved, the pair began work on executing the program with a launch date of April, 2018. “We jumped right in, identified a list of farmer and vendor suppliers within 100 miles of the coop, extended invitations for them to apply for the grant, and formed a grant awards committee made up of board members, co-op owners, and staff ”, says Crystal Halvorson, GM. Marketing executed branding, a communications strategy and plan, and PR. We developed the grant application, contract, and agreement based on the best practices of other co-ops.” says Beth Martin, marketing manager, “It really was a great example of cooperation among cooperatives in action. We saved time and brought the program to life by leaning on the good work of those who have gone before us.” Rachel Henderson and Anton Ptak of Mary Dirty Face Farm in Menomonie, WI received one of the first five MMFC Fund our Foodshed grants in May, 2018. Grant funds were utilized to invest in movable fencing so they could begin to incorporate livestock in their orchard - a big step toward

increasing efficiency, improving soil quality, and increasing the number of products available to the co-op and at the farmer’s market. “Family farms that produce nutritious, fresh food to market in their home communities are unfortunately at a disadvantage in our agricultural landscape. MMFC’s grant program demonstrates a high degree of local support for these small beginning farms. Beyond meeting a specific needs on our farm, this makes us feel valued in our community.” say Rachel Henderson of Mary Dirty Face Farm. Supporting the viability of small farms has a powerful multiplier effect that strengthens the local economy which in turn creates healthier and more resilient communities. Menomonie Market received twelve applications this first year and awarded grant funds for projects on five local farms— funding everything from chicken nesting boxes, a refreshed website, materials for improved irrigation systems, and the purchase of new livestock. The co-op and farmers will join together to share stories from each of the farms, review their projects, and enjoy foods made from the foods they produce at a grant review open house in early September at the co-op. “We can’t wait to open the 2019 grant cycle!” says Beth Martin, marketing manager, ‘ This program reflects the deep commitment our customers have to supporting their growers and food producers in our area. For any co-op that is considering it, we can’t recommend it enough!”

Each co-op has its own process for starting Co-op Community Activities. If you have an idea for an activity, check with your co-op’s Board of Directors or store staff to see how to proceed.

CO-OP COMMUNITY AC T I V I T Y P R O G R A M S

Moonflower Community Cooperative • UT • www.moonflower.coop

Moonflower Community Cooperative, nestled in the Moab valley in southeastern Utah, engages in numerous and diverse community outreach programs. Every second Tuesday of the month, the Co-op donates five percent of the day’s sales to a local community organization. Organizations often utilize the opportunity to set up a table and promote their mission and upcoming events. In 2018, the co-op launched their Seeds to Start Grant Program, a biennial grant disbursement of $1,000 to a local organization working on a project addressing food access and environmental justice. During the fall and winter trimesters, they host about ten fifth and sixth graders in their Datura Deli kitchen space for the Junior Chefs Club, where they teach students how to prepare healthy, simple, and tasty plant-based meals. Every month, they organize two to three free community classes taught by local holistic practitioners, farmers, gardeners, chefs, and more! On the last Monday of each month, their Community Outreach Coordinator hosts the Datura Dialogues, a radio show at the community radio station (KZMU) which invites guests to discuss topics ranging from permaculture to cooperative economics.

Oryana Community Cooperative • MI • www.oryana.coop

In addition to our Spring and Fall hands-on cooking classes, Oryana has been focusing on health and wellness through a variety of educational opportunities including weekly summer “Lunch and Learn” classes and free cooking basics classes. We also devised a yoga series in partnership with a local yoga studio to offer quarterly yoga classes paired with wellness talks based on themes such as positive body image and relieving stress. We participated in a new evening farmer’s market in our local neighborhood as well as a pop up market in a 6-week annual equestrian festival. Our composting bin is open to owners and the public. We give away finished compost twice a year to the community.

Sunsets West Co-op • WA • http://sunsetswestcoop.weebly.com

Sunsets Wests hosts many unique and diverse community programs. The Co-op has a ‘store’ garden in the school grounds, owns a chicken ‘farm’ for eggs, sponsored two other co-op startups with offers of equipment. They have 54 local folk supplying product, are always involved in community sourcing for infrastructure and equipment additions. The co-op has a social area, almost as big as the store, where they serve health conscience meals, have free Wifi, social area, a record player, piano, tea and coffee bar. They are host for a large multicultural travelling population and host music jam sessions open to anyone travelling or local every week. The co-op shares the surplus produce in summer with the food bank. They have classes on Wild foraging and ballroom dance and are represented on the County Planning Commission, the local Makah Tribe and the Advisory Board for the Peninsula College Bakery at the Clallam Bay Correction Center. And last but not least the co-op loans their popcorn machine to events that need it.

CO-OP GENEROSIT Y Most co-op donations, Grants and loans are focused on building a local food network or helping the disadvantaged in the community. Some of these are funded from co-op profits and others are funded by co-op members and customers. Co-ops are a great tool for members to pool their resources and come up with significant amounts of money. The two most popular activities are Round Up & Bag programs. These activities are basically the same in each of the co-ops that use them but each co-op has their own unique name for the activity and usually their own twist on the activity. I N T E R N AT I O NA L C O M M U N I T Y African Market Baskets™ has been helping weavers and their families in Bolgatanga, Ghana for close to 20 years. As a longtime member of The Fair Trade Federation, African Market Baskets™ has been working directly with thousands of weavers to bring these beautiful grass baskets to the US. We have imported more than a million baskets over the years! African Market Baskets™ donates a portion of its profits annually to its non-governmental organization (NGO), Every Basket Helps™, which provides health care and school supplies for over a thousand weavers and their families in Bolgatanga, Ghana. The Founder and CEO, Steve Karowe, travels to the villages of northern Ghana each year to oversee the NGO projects, working directly with the Ghana Ministry of Health to register the weavers and their families for full health care coverage, as well as buying school supplies and distributing them to primary schools so all the children have the basic school materials they need to attend school for the year. “One of my favorite parts of the business is traveling to Ghana and seeing firsthand how much African Market Baskets™ helps in the region”, says Karowe. “It’s so heartwarming to see the outpouring of support from the weavers and their families, as well as from local villagers who hear of our help. I love harnessing the power of business to do good in the world”. African Market Baskets™ pays among the highest prices in the region for baskets, and as a result, we get the best quality baskets and help the weavers and their families with better wages for their work. Because of our economies of scale, we are able to offer our beautiful baskets at reasonable prices in The USA and Canada, further helping the economy of Bolgatanga with ongoing basket purchases. In addition to health care and school supplies, Every Basket Helps™ has built a community weaving center for 4 villages and donated hundreds of mosquito nets to help reduce malaria in the region. We are creating a 501c3 non-profit in The US to help further our humanitarian projects in Africa. To appreciate these baskets even more, it’s important to understand the journey of a basket from Ghana to a home in the US. It all begins in northern Ghana along a stream or riverbank, where the villagers pick the grass, being careful not to disturb the growing plant. The grass grows up to 12 feet tall, and only the top shoot is harvested, leaving the plant to produce multiple shoots each rainy season. The grass is dried in the sun, then rolled and double twisted to form the building blocks of the basket. The fibers are then dyed, before the weaving

begins. Starting at the middle of the base of the basket, the fibers are woven over and under, inserting various colors of dyed fibers to create the intricate patterns of each basket. More fibers are added to create various shapes (round, oval, etc.). The top edge is finished by wrapping fibers around and around the edge, enclosing some of the loose fibers to create a thick, uniform top edge. Using a razor blade, the weaver trims hundreds of fibers that stick out of the basket, transforming it into the basket we recognize. Handles are added after the basket is finished. Every third day in Bolgatanga there is a basket market, and the weavers or their relatives make the long journey into the town of Bolgatanga to sell their baskets. They start from their village before dawn, crossing rivers at times, and walking, riding bikes, motorcycles, or local cars or busses until they arrive at the market and go from buyer to buyer, bargaining for

the best price for their creations. Once the basket is sold to a buyer, leatherworkers add decorative leather to the handles. Soon the baskets are sacked into large sacks and transported by car, bus, van, or large truck for over a day’s journey to the seaport. From there, hundreds of sacks of baskets are loaded into ship containers where they will travel from Ghana to Europe, then onward to USA, cleared through customs, then loaded onto a train for a week or more journey to Denver, Colorado, where it gets loaded onto a truck and delivered to our warehouse in Nederland, CO, where we unload up to 12,000 baskets into our warehouse. Sack by sack, we unload the baskets, check each basket, add informational tags, and repack into cartons for FedEx Ground shipment to our customers’ stores all across the USA and Canada. Finally, a lucky customer can buy a beautiful basket and bring it to their home for one of many great uses!
