Big Changes for a New Season

I love fall. As you know I love every season here in the Northwest. The snow and cold of winter, the warm rains of spring and blooming flowers, and even the mud are all part of it. With summer comes the sun, the heat, the garden, fun in the water and then we are straight into fall. I was born here and these seasonal changes are a big part of why I never left. But they do come fast and those of us who live here have learned to live fast within each change.

This new season has also brought change to the CO-OP. You, our customers and members asked us to bring in some Purina products and we have. If you look over on page 7 you’ll see some of the more than 15 products we now carry in the store. Please stop by and let us know what you think. It is all out on the floor and we are prepared to answer any questions you may have about what we currently carry and what may be on the way.

We ended summer with a bang at the local county fairs as George and Rich went a little crazy at the 4-H Market animal livestock sales in Bonner and Boundary County. You can find the (Bonner County)livestock sale information and results over on page 19 of this publication.

This list includes 4-H market sale participants and the business/person who purchased his/her animal. The CO-OP is proud to have been a part of this ongoing tradition and to count ourselves among the many local citizens and businesses supporting 4-H. George and Patti have been going to shows this year and have come back with some great new products for the fall and winter coming up. We can’t reveal all of it here. You will just have to stop in and see what’s cooking in October when all kinds of great items go out on the floor, including some great stuff for the kids!

On page 22 check out the information about Trick-or-Treating at the CO-OP. And if you know a child 10 years old or under why not invite them to participate in our coloring contest over on page 10? It’s easy, it’s fun, and everyone enjoys seeing each and every coloring contest entry displayed in the store. Last year we had over 80 entries!

It’s a new season both outdoors and inside. Drop by the CO-OP, get a cup of coffee and wander our aisles. There is always something new!

Fall Lawn Renovation & Maintenance Tasks for a Beautiful, Easy-Care Lawn $5 Tuesday, September 18, 2-4pm

Fall is a great time to take care of your lawn in order to jump-start next year’s beautiful, easy-care lawn. Jack Zimmer, a retired turfgrass professor and owner of Pineview Horticultural Services in Hayden, discusses when to perform tasks including fertilizing, weeding, reseeding, and de-thatching. He will discuss low maintenance turf types that reduce water and mowing requirements that he has developed. Following the classroom presentation, we will have a field demonstration and lawn critique at a nearby location. Bring your questions for this knowledgeable speaker!

Dutch Oven Cooking Class $15 Tuesday, September 18, 10am-2pm

Learn how to make delicious food while cooking outdoors using a Dutch oven. We will also cover proper care, storage and tips for the Dutch oven. This hands-on class will teach how to make a variety of dishes including breads, desserts, main dishes and vegetables. The class will end with a picnic lunch as participants get to eat the food we make during the class.

Crucial Conversations & Strategies for executing a Succession Planning Process: A Workshop for Farmwomen & their Families $20 Thursday, September 20, 9am-3pm

Center for Organic Studies, 10881 Boyer Ave., Sandpoint This all-day workshop focuses on farm family business succession planning. Using a case study approach, Dick Wittman will address areas where crucial conversations need to take place and establish a framework for how to start and finish a transition planning process. Our speaker manages a large-scale dryland crop, range cattle and timber operation in northern Idaho in partnership with his extended family. He is the author of Building Effective Farm Management Systems, which is a guidebook that helps commercial-size family farm businesses define their vision and establish a professional management and transition process that will lead them to that goal. This workshop is made possible with funds provided by Western Extension Risk Management Education, USDA National Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA), and the Idaho Barley Commission.

The Castle Doctrine and Stand Your Ground

The Castle Doctrine and “stand-your-ground” laws are affirmative defenses for individuals charged with criminal homicide. The Castle Doctrine is a common law doctrine stating that an individual has no duty to retreat when in his or her home, or “castle,” and may use reasonable force, including deadly force, to defend his or her property, person, or another. Outside of the “castle,” however, an individual has a duty to retreat, if able to do so, before using reasonable force. Stand-your-ground laws, by comparison, remove the common law requirement to retreat outside of one’s “castle,” allowing an individual to use force in self-defense when there is reasonable belief of a threat. Deadly force is reasonable under stand-your-ground laws in certain circumstances, such as imminent great bodily harm or death.* Over the years many citizens have felt uneasy with the laws in place regarding The Castle Doctrine and Stand Your Ground. Litigation after the fact seemed to be a possibility if a homeowner used deadly force to protect his or her property, or chose to involve themselves in order to stop an attack on someone else or his / her property.

While many states have laws on the books with language addressing these issues, the Idaho State Legislature took further steps to increase the liberty of private citizens when defending themselves or others. Senate Bill 1313 allows the citizen to read the language of Idaho law regarding self defence. This is a clear reading and should answer any questions private citizens may have about self defense issues such as what sort of force can be used, where it can be used, and protections for the citizen should he/she become involved in a deadly force use event.

HB658 should also be read in conjunction with the changes in SB1313. HB658 outlines law regarding private property rights pertaining to proper posting of private property and discouraging criminal trespass.

Three bills were also passed regarding the Second Amendment.

HB443 authorizes and encourages public schools to adopt and offer an elective course in gun safety training and authorized instructors who will teach the courses.

HB565 allows retired law enforcement officers who have the 518 ConBuying and Selling cealed Weapon Carry cards to carry in K-12 schools, college dorms and residences halls, and event halls that hold over 1,000 people.

Pressure and Release…

The missing language of a quality partnership A majority of unwanted horse behavior stems from the animal responding with defensiveness towards any form of pressure. Spatial and physical are the most common types of pressure people use to communicate with horses. If there is a physical resistance and mental distrust towards pressure, this can lead to a wary partnership between horse and human.

The horse presenting himself to be haltered, working at liberty, walking past a scary location or object are all forms of spatial pressure. Tasks such as standing tied, tacking up, being mounted, and rein/seat/leg aids are all examples of physical pressure.

An overlooked factor in creating a quality partnership is the rider recognizing the horse’s efforts by offering a release. Think of the release as an acknowledgement or “thank you” towards the horse for his effort. It is the only encouragement the rider can offer to horse to inspire him to keep trying.

The timing of the release is crucial and can be offered in a multitude of ways. It can be physical, such as decreasing the use of an aid or slowing the pace; a spatial release could be encouraging a horse to “think through” a scenario. A rider lacking sensitivity and awareness, unintentionally creates constant pressure towards their horse.

Mistrust can begin when the horse complies with the initial pressure, and a rider continues to “take” or demand more of the horse. Eventually the constant pressure with no release is too much for the horse, who begins displaying resistant (fussy, busy, defensive) behavior. If the horse’s movement still appears “manageable,” his concerns tend to be ignored, or worse, the rider’s response is to create MORE pressure in an attempt to “make him” do something or to contain his resistance.

What does this vicious cycle teach the horse? That every time he displays he has a problem, he is going to have more pressure applied to him. Eventually the horse has had “enough” and uses his size and muscle to get bigger, stronger or perhaps more intimidating. The obvious unwanted physical behavior is often the symptom, rather than the root cause.

A common practice is to mask the unwanted behavior, with quick and easy “fixes” such as using more severe tack. Adding equipment, working the horse harder and longer, all forms of pressure, lead to increased resistance from the horse.

Instead it should feel like a respectful conversation between the rider and their horse, not a screaming match. The rider should ask something of the horse with minimal energy and effort, through clear and specific communication. The horse can and should respond in a polite and willing manner.

The reality is that many riders feel like they are begging for the horse to acknowledge them. Other folks’ approach is to “make” the horse do something through physical dominance; this fuels the horse’s defensiveness. Then there are riders who learn to work “around” the horse, limiting what they ask of them to avoid potential resistance or conflict.

None of these methods contribute to the horse or rider’s confidence, trust, respect or partnership. So how do we fix it? With young or inexperienced horses, my philosophy is it is easier to prevent something from happening, than trying to fix it after-the-fact.

Horses are born sensitive, alert, aware and curious. But often by the time you see a horse that has been ridden for a few years they have “lost” a lot of those traits. So what happened? Through no ill will or bad intention, rather a lack of quality equine education, many folks have handled their horses in a manner that has unintentionally taught the horse to ignore them, to be fearful of the human, and to feel defensive towards people in general.

How does this happen?

Contributors that tend to quickly create mistrust, misunderstanding and concern for the horse can include but are not limited to: Professionals who prioritize quantity of task-accomplishment with the horse, rather than quality and confidence-building training practices.

Trainers who feel time/financial/ego pressure to produce results and rush colts or inexperienced horses too fast or hard in their initial education, creating a fear of the unknown.

Trainers sending inexperienced horses home to inexperienced riders who “don’t know what they don’t know,” therefore the rider asks things of the horse that are overwhelming or over-face the horse.

A rider’s general lack of correct usage of aids, creating a constant heaviness (all pressure and no release) combined with continual mixed signals and passive communication.

A lack of physical release from the rider contributes to a mental disengagement from the horse. This is what I consider as overly desensitized horses or mentally “shut down.” They aren’t interested in participating, and they are only tolerating the human, leading to continual resistance towards the rider.

So what if you aren’t working a young horse, but an older experienced one, can he “come back” from the mental stress and physical pressures created by people? Absolutely. It does not take long for the horse to recognize the immediate difference in a “conversation” focusing on refining his interpretation of pressure and release, defining clear boundaries and standards as to what behaviors will work and those that don’t. The more the horse realizes his efforts lead to a release, the more curious he becomes about what is being presented.

Horses can be incredibly forgiving animals, and can quickly adapt to positive, clear and specific communication. Re-sensitizing the horse to being soft on the lead rope, leads to a softer response to the rein. Following-thefeel and softening to pressure, should feel like the horse is “melting” towards wherever you first direct his thought, then his body, whether you’re on the ground or in the saddle. The horse should feel like putty, waiting for you to mold him however you’d like. Being a herd animal, he can be very willing to comply and adapt, if the rider is willing to educate themselves and learn how to support the horse through scenarios, rather than solely critique his efforts.

Southside Elementary School Garden Project Delivers Delicious Vegetables

The school garden at Southside Elementary in Cocollala, Idaho made it through the summer under the watchful eye of both teachers and parents alike. Though there were some blistering days in August that challenged the drip water system, the tomatoes thrived and the potatoes and carrots came up. The pumpkins didn’t fair so well with only about 4 surviving the plant.

The plan is toincorporate the vegetables into the school lunch program when school resumes after Labor Day. This program, supported by local businesses, the Bonner County Gardeners Association and local community groups offers children an opportunity to see where their food comes from. The children are a part of the seeding process and care for the gardens until school ends in the spring. They are quite excited to see the progress of the garden over the summer when other hands have taken over the care of it.

Correction In the last issue of the Round Up it was mistakenly reported that the BCGA was responsible for the placement of the raised beds and irrigation drip sytem at Southside Elementary School. The raised beds and the water system were actually provided by The Sandpoint Elks, Lodge 1376. We apologize for the error.

Moving forward the hope is that more schools will choose to participate in the garden project. As with most projects like this it takes a love for the project itself, a little bit of effort, and a lot of support from the community. Thos of us who have been fortunate enough to participate in the school garden project over the years look forward to another opportunity next spring to dig up some dirt and teach some kids about growing things.

I would like to have a conversation with you. What about? Well my favorite subject and could be yours also, cattle, horses, goats, rabbits, sheep, ect. You know a conversation about the 4 legged and 2 legged (poultry) family members in our lives.

I have been working here at the Co-op Country Store for a while now. I enjoy my job immensely. I like that I get to be a part of this great little store. I remember buying feed for my 4H market steer at the mill in town and buying my show bridle from the Co-op with the money I made from selling my steer at the Bonner County Fair. I like the history of the Co-op Country Store. I like the atmosphere that I get to work in every day. I like the people that come into the Co-op. I like talking to you, the animal owners about anything related to feeding, preventing and solving problems, healing and promoting overall health in your livestock.

I try hard to listen to what your needs are. Sometimes I have exactly what you need. Other times I may have to do some searching and special order an item that you need. Countless times I have started stocking items that previously were not on our shelves because you asked for it. Sometimes I will tell you where you might find an item that I cannot get. Then there are times that I will hand you a list of veterinary numbers because a call to the veterinarian is necessary.

Feeding animals is a passion of mine. That is where good health begins. We have so many choices when it comes to feed that it can be overwhelming. I have fed quite a few of the different feeds and supplements we carry at The CO-OP but by no means have I fed all of them. Part of our conversation is you sharing your experience about the feeds and supplements you have used. I have learned so much from my customers. Whether it is researching a health issue or putting our heads together to figure out what might work best for getting your geriatric mare to gain weight, we are here to help and to answer questions about the feeds and products we have here at the Co-op. Weed of the Month- Western Bracken Fern

With any luck the wildfire smoke will have subsided by the time this is published—unfortunately, the annoying haze has become a common phenomenon during August in the northwest. That aside, I hope you all have had a fun and productive summer full of adventures and weed killing! As a reminder, if you are part of our Neighborhood Weeds Cooperative program and have not turned in your end-of-season paperwork and herbicide receipts to the Bonner County Weeds office (or your group coordinator), DO IT NOW. Government budgets operate off of the fiscal year calendar, which is October 1 – September 30; this necessitates the August 31 deadline so as to allow time to analyze the numbers, and process the payments and associated backup within the current fiscal year. If you are not familiar with the Neighborhood Weeds Cooperative, feel free to get in touch with Bonner County Weeds for details. My office may be contacted by phone, email or Facebook message.

Weed of the month is Western Bracken Fern (Pteridium aquilinum), the most widely distributed of the ferns. This is native to the Western United States so it’s not an Idaho State or Bonner County listed noxious weed, but it is very poisonous to cattle and horses and common enough in the Bonner County area to make it worth being in the spotlight this month as a weed of concern. Bracken Fern is estimated to be over 55 million years old according to fossil records, and its primitive reproduction system is certainly indicative of it being a prehistoric plant. The entire stem and leaf complex is referred to as fronds—the stem portion is triangular shaped and the leaf portions are large and highly divided with hairs on the underside. It grows 2-4 feet in height and spreads by root stalks and spores; the spores are reddish-brown and found on the underside of the fronds. The spores usually release around mid-late July.

Bracken Fern can be found in full sun, partial sun and shaded sites; pastures, timbered areas, roadsides, CRP lands and vacant lots are all areas that the Bracken Fern calls ‘home’. It begins its growth process in the spring and remains green until the first heavy frost—it acts as a deciduous plant in [colder] environments like ours. The brand new fronds in the spring appear knobby, then develop a fiddleneck appearance as they unroll, coming in to their full glory sometime in May. With Bracken Fern being indigenous to the United States, it has its place in the ecosystem as a whole—it is a food source to some moths. However, the bag of negatives include allelopathy, severe livestock poisoning, and some research according to USDA-ARS (United States Department of Agriculture – Agricultural Research Service) has suggested that it is carcinogenic to humans. I’ll start with elaborating on allelopathy; Bracken Fern releases allelopathic chemicals which may interfere with other plants’ ability to grow. This has shown to be an issue at times in timber reforestation situations, where Bracken Fern will take hold in a recently logged or burned area and suppresses the growth of newly planted conifer seedlings, or takes over a unit before planting even happens.

Livestock poisoning is usually chronic with effects taking hold 2 - 4 weeks post consumption. The signs of Bracken Fern poisoning are different in cattle than they are in horses, I will list out both. The following are signs of poisoning in cattle: high fever, loss of appetite, depression, difficulty breathing, excessive salivation, nasal & rectal bleeding and hemorrhages on the mucous membranes. The following are signs of poisoning in horses: weight loss, loss of coordination, twitching muscles, crouching stance (back arched with legs apart) and convulsions. Poisoned animals seldom recover, although if caught early enough in horses, intravenous injections of thiamine hydrochloride may act as an antidote. Livestock will generally avoid

Bracken Fern although since it remains green for such a large portion of the growing season they could graze on it late in the summer (right around now) if not much else is available to them, as well as first thing in the spring when the fronds are succulent and palatable. Another avenue for poisoning is via contaminated hay—know your source! Poisoning is only likely to occur if the hay is 20% [or more] Bracken Fern, and again, symptoms would not show until 2 - 4 weeks post consumption. Bracken Fern is not something you want in or near an active pasture.

Effective control methods include mechanical and herbicide options; the plants and associated roots can be destroyed by repeated cultivation, and/or it can be mowed throughout the growing season to keep the fronds from developing any kind of browse-worthy forage. There is an herbicide specially formulated for Bracken Fern (as well as some annual & perennial grasses) called Asulox® (asulam), a solid option if some grass kill can be tolerated.

Asulox® would likely be the preferred product in timber reforestation prep. Bonner County Weeds has had decent luck killing it with a blend of broadleaf herbicides including Milestone® (aminopyralid), MSM60 (metsulfuron) and a 2,4D amine once the fronds have fully developed.

Fall can actually be a great time for achieving control on a number of perennial weeds if the correct strategies are used, just get it done before the distraction of elk season for maximum results (kidding…sort of)!

BCGA Holds Plant Sale and Fall Classes

Autumn is a fine time to add new plants to perennial beds, and a good time to dig up extra plants to share with others. The Bonner County Gardeners Association is holding a plant sale on Friday, September 7 from 9 to 6 and Saturday, September 8 from 9 to 3 at the east end of Bonner Mall. BCGA members are donating favorite plants from their gardens; some are rare specimens, others old favorites. All have been grown in our climate. Come by, say “Hi” and get some good deals for your garden.

September 15, the fall series of Home Horticulture classes begins, with a field trip. The remainder of the classes will be on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 pm at the BCGA classroom at 401 Bonner Mall Way, Suite F. Here is the lineup of classes for fall: September 15 (Saturday) 3 to 5 pm: FIELD TRIP: Home Composting with Ann Warwick and Janae Dale. The class is at 768 Samuels Road and will feature on-site tips on how to have a successful composting experience.

Janae Dale will show you how to create and maintain a worm compost bin.

September 19: Fall Soil Preparation and Testing, Gray Henderson, instructor. Learn what you can do in the fall to insure that your soil is in optimal condition for next spring’s planting.

September 26: Asexual Plant Propagation, with Manuella Eiring of Florascape Nursery. Learn methods of propagating plants without using seeds.

Discover which plants are suited to various methods, and when to use these techniques.

October 3: Hardy Grapes-Vines, Wines and Design, taught by Nancy Hastings from All Seasons Garden and Floral. Nancy will tell us which varieties for fresh eating, wine making and juicing will flourish here, and how to integrate them into a beautiful landscape.

October 10: Orchard Fruits, with Kyle Nagy, from Sandpoint Orchard.

The Sandpoint Orchard grows many varieties of apples, pears, and stone fruits.Kyle will provide information on every step of orchard maintenance, from planting to harvesting, fertilization, pruning, pest control, and can describe the many varieties of fruits and their uses.

TOMATO MUSINGS I love growing tomatoes! They are so useful--one can dry, can, freeze, sauce or salsa them, or just eat them fresh or in almost any summer dish.

There are so many different kinds, too, all colors, sizes, shapes and flavors, that I always order several new ones from seed catalogs. This year, experiments included Goliath Giant Early Bush (semi-determinate, 49 days to maturity) BHN589, another semi-determinate (75 days,) Early Blue Ribbon, indeterminate, 55 days, and Champion II, indeterminate, 62 days.

I started them under lights the first week of March, then moved them to a heated hoop house, and finally, to large pots in an unheated hoop house for the summer. Treated them all the same all the way. Well, they all had the first ripe tomato at about the same time. I was pleased with all these tomatoes, though, despite the variation from promised ripeness dates. They all yielded very well, and I’ll try all of them again next year. The Goliath Giant Early Bush were the tastiest and a good slicing size for sandwiches.

I like the semi-determinate tomatoes, as they yield well on compact plants that need less management than rangy indeterminate tomatoes.

My old favorites from year to year are Tigerella, which are small, but packed with flavor, and Gardener’s Delight, one inch fruits abundant on the plant. I keep one by the back door to snack on. I always have an Early Girl and an Ultimate Opener. Martino’s Roma is perfect for drying, medium sized fruits abundant on the plant. For decoration, I always grow a couple of Taxi tomatoes. The plants are diminutive, perfect for containers, adorned early with dozens of medium sized bright yellow orbs.

What is a Genetically Modified Organism?

In the last issue I wrote about the difference between an heirloom and a hybrid seed. In this issue I will look at GMOs. GMOs, or genetically modified organism(s) is a big subject. To understand exactly what a GMO is, or could be, requires a discussion about what we know about living organisms at the molecular level, or, molecular biology.

Arguably, one of the most beautiful images in nature is the famous double helix, or, the DNA molecule. Think of the DNA structure as a common ladder.

The rails on either side are a sugar phosphate, or, deoxyribose backbone.

The rungs of the ladder are made up of four different chemicals: Thymine, Adenine, Cytosine, and Guanine. Sometimes these are called bases. Each rung makes up a base pair. Adenine is always paired with Guanine. Thymine always pairs with Cytosine.

DNA, short for deoxyribonucleic acid, is the molecule that contains the genetic code or the recipe for an organism. DNA is in each cell in the organism and tells cells what proteins to make.* Genes are basically sections of the DNA strand which can be very, very long, and hold hundreds of thousands of bits of information. It is this DNA, this genetic material that scientists use to manipulate the genetic makeup of a living organism artificially.

This process of genetic engineering creates combinations of plant, animal, bacteria, and virus genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods. And this is where most people have trouble with the process.

Back in the 1950s scientists were already becoming familiar with genetics and experimenting with genetic manipulation. It just wasn’t mainstream information in those days. By the time students graduated from high school they knew what a DNA strand was but had precious little awareness of what it could be used for. Case in point, the lowly tomato.

The biggest complaint about supermarket tomatoes is they have no flavor. That’s because they are picked before ripe to help them survive shipping. When the FLAVR SAVR tomato arrived on supermarket shelves in 1994 it caused quite a stir, and a public backlash. This tomato’s genetic code had been altered in an effort to allow the fruit to ripen on the vine, AND be shipped to market without becoming mushy. Basically, as the tomato ripens the connective tissue begins to deteriorate. Through the use of an E. coli gene which occurs naturally in the mammalian gut, scientists were able to arrest the tissue deterioration by cancelling it out. The FLAVR SAVR was able to ripen on the vine and come to market ripe with a better taste. But the public was not ready for “mutant vegetables” or worse.

In the next issue we will talk about why “mutant” food plants are absolutely critical if we want to feed the world.

by Kathy Osborne Draft horses and draft Mules are more than beautiful. They are somehow bigger than life, bigger than the day to day we transition through in our modern times. And when we see them in a pasture or hitched to a sleigh it awakens something inside us that harkens back to a day when this animal meant so much more. We may not have been there for the horse interlude but we know it is important to us because it was important to our ancestors. It is this awareness of historical value, this sense of place and belonging that grips us when we touch the soft mane, the broad chest of a gentle giant and breathe the same air. It is this image, this history that concerns Steffani Lippert of the North Idaho Draft Horse and Mule International Show.

Draft Horses and Draft Mules. They are big, they are strong and they are a very important part of our heritage. Horses of all shapes and sizes have played a role in the lives of Americans. From the Spanish arriving to explore this continent on horseback to the Native American who managed to acquire those same horses, to Europeans shipping the first draft breeds, horses became the anchor of a better way of life. By 1845 the Willamette Valley was home to over 1700 Clydesdale, Percheron, and Belgian horses. In all, more than 48,000 horses were to be found throughout the Oregon Territory by 1869.

Horsepower was the name of the game and early on businesses such as The Oregon Horse and Land Company made their mark through product reputation. By 1885 this company was breeding horses by the thousands for ranchers and settlers, some of which would travel up to 100 miles just to buy an animal from this particular company. And some of these same horses found their way onto farms becoming breeding stock for a bigger, stronger work animal.

From the presence of horses under Native American care in the 1700s to the advent of the railroad in the late 1800s the time span when work horses were necessary was relatively short. Even in terms of communications the Pony Express only lasted some 18 months. It was still running even as telegraph lines were being strung across the country putting the horses and riders out of business.

As the farm horse, draft or otherwise, was met with the arrival of tractors a way of life was coming to an end. No longer were teams of 33 mules necessary to pull combines. Rare became the sight of 40 horse teams in the wheat fields of the Northwest. Farm implements were routinely converted to be pulled by tractors instead of horses or mules. By the 1920s a tractor was within reach financially of most farmers. For the most part the use of horses and mules in agriculture reached an end by the 1940s with America’s entry into WWII. They were simply too inefficient for the agricultural production needs of the country.

As with all subjects related to history once representative of everyday life, the story needs to be told again and again so we don’t forget what happened, what life was like in days gone by. It is easy to forget the skills necessary to drive 40 horses at one time. It is hard to imagine the incredible pressure of caring for 30 mules on a daily basis. An experienced “teamster” was part driver, part veterinarian, part nutrition specialist, part engineer all rolled into one.

These elements come into play when one goes to watch a modern day exhibition like the North Idaho Draft Horse and Mule Show which our community has been blessed with for the last 42 years.

Steffani Lippert and Dick Blakley for the past 14 years, have been involved with the show owning, and showing 8 Percheron mules, as S and D Mules. Having lived here for the past 45 years, Steffani has witnessed the growth and popularity of the show and the challenges of filling the stands and finding volunteers.

“There really is no other show quite like it. Everyone loves coming here. It is easily the most beautiful location of all the shows. I would hate to see it leave Sandpoint. But we have to pay the bills” said Lippert.

The Bonner County Fairgrounds has been home to the spectacular show for more than 40 years. It has the correct stalls, show ring, plenty of space for traveling draft teams to camp, and, of course, the location. But Sandpoint is far from the vast numbers of spectators needed for this type of show. Talk of moving the Draft Horse and Mule Show from Sandpoint has surfaced time and again for the last twenty years, always followed by another spectacular show in Sandpoint.

“If we are going to fill the stands we have to be where more people have access. We continue to hope that something can be worked out with the (Bonner County) Fairgrounds. The costs of putting on this show continue to rise” said Lippert. I don’t want to admit it but autumn is here already! I can tell by the fading color of the Burning Bush in my neighbor’s yard. The local harbinger of fall will fade as it does every year from green, to pink, and finally brilliant red. By the time this transformation is complete the surrounding trees and shrubs will have joined in the inevitable. As I have commented before, my oldest daughter loves to call or write to me announcing “Mom, fall is here.”

Today was that day. I looked out the window, coffee in hand and decided as I took a sip I think this year I will decorate for autumn.

If you like easy casseroles then this is the issue for you. Find below two dishes that are so easy you can have the kids help too! Just add a salad of your choice and enjoy!

Easy Chicken Alfredo Bake 1 16 oz. package small pasta shells 1 jar prepared alfredo sauce of your choice 3 cups chicken cooked and cut into cubes 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1 cup cheddar cheese grated 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese shredded 12 leaves fresh basil, torn Cook pasta in salted boiling water until just al dente Drain pasta into a large mixing bowl and drizzle with olive oil Blend into the pasta: alfredo sauce, chicken, oregano, and 1/2 cheese Pour pasta mix into 9” x 11” casserole dish Sprinkle remaining cheese on top Garnish with fresh basil leaves

Beautiful Fall Color Abounds on Local Path System

Autumn is approaching and will be here in just a few weeks. But long before then the leaves on trees and shrubs all over the landscape of the Northwest are going to come alive with color! We owe this change to the diminishing sunlight available to plants as the days slowly shorten. Yes, shorten, by about a minute each day more or less. And if the days are getting shorter it must be time to get outside and enjoy the scenery!

The communities of Sandpoint, Dover, Kootenai, and Ponderay in Bonner County, Idaho have been developing not only a public transportation system with the SPOT program, they have also tied the communities together via a bike and walking path system.

This very family friendly walk can be picked up easily in all four communities with several entrances. It is easy to park in Dover near Dover Bay in the little parking lot just behind the Cottages. From here the path can be accessed heading north through one of the most spectacular deciduous tree color offerings in the area. Travel beneath the Dover Bridge and head for Sandpoint.

The path will intersect with Boyer Avenue. From here the traveler can continue north to Schweitzer Cut Off and turn right to access the path into Ponderay at Hwy 95. Or, he may choose to take a slight detour over Popsicle Bridge at Sand Creek accessing the trail just west of Hwy 95 near the railroad underpass in Ponderay.

The path offers two safe entrances into Ponderay for walkers and bikers where it continues east to Kootenai along Kootenai Cut Off Road. While the path technically ends at the intersection of Hwy 200 and McGhee Road, the City of Kootenai accesses Hwy 200 from several streets any one of which will lead the curious to even more walking and biking options to the north through gorgeous farm land.

Also at Popsicle Bridge the Sandcreek Byway Path can be accessed simply by turning right and heading south. This path will lead to Sandpoint City Beach. Here, one may access the Ponderay Bay Trail. And don’t forget the extraordinary experience of a walk across the Long Bridge, accessed off of Hwy 95 at The Old Power House. A small parking area is provided where you can leave your car and take off walking or biking.

This series of connecting paths offers hours of enjoyment, relaxation, exercise, solitude, all within easy reach of all four small towns. This path system is free to the public and mostly kid and pet friendly. It offers diverse scenery well into the early winter months and will not disappoint!

How Do the Federal Reserve Committee’s Decisions on Interest Rates Affect You

The Federal Reserve Committee sets monetary policy, primarily by raising or lowering the Fed’s target for the federal funds rate, which is used as the benchmark for a range of consumer interest rates. The rate the Fed sets ends up affecting almost everything in our economy. Their decisions have an indirect impact on a number of benchmarks, including the prices you pay at the grocery store, gas pump and other retail outlets.

That’s because the cost and availability of money affect people’s willingness to pay for goods and services. When money is cheap and plentiful, there’s more demand and prices tend to rise. When the Federal Reserve raises interest rates, you feel it. The Fed in June raised rates for the second time this year, and at least two more are expected in 2018.

Their actions also typically affect the job market. At every meeting, monetary policymakers consider labor market data as they make decisions aimed at achieving maximum employment. They look at numbers such as payroll changes, labor force participation rate, and duration of unemployment.

When it raises the federal funds rate, it tends to slow the economy. That leads to fewer people being hired. They also have less leeway to demand pay raises. This lack of power to bargain for higher wages is seen as a way to fight inflation.

“When the economy’s doing really well and the labor market is good and the unemployment rate is falling, that’s when you have concerns about employers hiring and bidding up wages and inflation rising,” says Gus Faucher, chief economist with The PNC Financial Services Group.

Traditionally, the Fed fights inflation by raising the federal funds rate, which makes money more expensive and scarcer. That is supposed to reduce overall demand and slow the pace of price increases. Raising the federal funds rate is less about fighting inflation and more about getting the rate closer to its long-term neutral of 3 percent to 3.5 percent, says Joel Naroff, president and chief economist for Naroff Economic Advisors.

Credit card rates are impacted as well. Most credit cards charge variable interest rates tied to the prime rate, which is about 3 percentage points above the federal funds rate. When the federal funds rate changes, the prime rate does as well, and credit card rates follow suit. When the Fed sends credit card rates higher, it costs more to borrow. So people tend to borrow less, and buy less. That slows the economy and puts the brakes on inflation.The interest you earn on your deposits, such as your money in a Certificate of Deposit, is certainly impacted. The Fed has kept interest rates at rock bottom for several years now. CD rates largely follow the shortterm interest rates that track the federal funds rate. In the late 1980s, for instance, you could earn double-digit rates on CDs, but with inflation also in the double digits, your actual earnings were much lower due to the erosion of your purchasing power.

While the interest rate on savings is currently low, so is the interest rate when borrowing money. The federal funds rate chiefly influences short-term interest rates, because it’s a rate on money lent overnight between banks.

But it also trickles through to medium-term fixed loans, such as auto loans.

Whether the lender is a credit union, bank or other institution, it will price auto loans relative to the prime rate, which moves up and down in sync with the federal funds rate.

While interest rates on short term loans are closely tied to Fed Rates, mortgage rates respond to market forces — specifically, to the needs of bond investors.

The Federal Reserve exerts an indirect influence on mortgages. Sometimes mortgage rates go up when the Fed increases short-term rates, as the central bank’s action sets the tone for most other interest rates. But sometimes mortgage rates fall after the Fed raises the federal funds rate, which is what happened in 2004. In 2017, housing economists predicted mortgage rates would rise. Instead, they remained fairly steady despite three Fed rate hikes.

But mortgage rates have been on a steady climb since the beginning of 2018, which shows the central bank’s actions aren’t predictive.

Your home equity line of credit, or HELOC, is also linked to the prime rate. When the Fed raises its target rate, HELOC rates follow. Because credit card interest rates will go up, too, it still could be to your advantage to consolidate credit card debt into a lower-rate HELOC if you have the selfdiscipline to pay off the debt as quickly as you can. Some financial institutions even offer a HELOC with an option to fix the interest rate during the life of the loan rather

than remain variable and increase each time prime adjusts.

So what does this mean to you in today’s economy? The sooner you pay off variable-rate debt, the better, because many investors and economists expect the Fed to keep gradually increasing the federal funds rate. For example, apply for a 0 percent APR balance transfer credit card before that happens. It will give you time to pay down your debt interest-free. Talk with your bank about a HELOC, or options for fixing your interest rate. “Rate shopping” now just makes good sense while rates are low.

The Business Model That Sets Us Apart The Cooperative Model

Every business hoping to succeed in this increasingly competitive world knows it must set itself apart from the competition at the beginning. State of the Real Estate Market: Prices Continue to Rise Jim Haynes, Associate Broker,

Real estate prices continue to strengthen both nationally and regionally (See real estate statistics table on this page). Nationally, median1 home sales prices were up 5.4% for the 12 months ending July 31 over the previous 12 months. The three northern Idaho counties all experienced significantly higher appreciation. Boundary County median home sales prices were up 7.1% year over year. Kootenai County and Bonner County experienced 10% and 14.3% increases respectively. The number of homes being sold is down nationally for the same twelve-month period when compared to a year earlier by 1.3%. Locally, it was a mixed bag with Kootenai County selling 3.6% more homes this year than last. Boundary County experienced a decrease of 1.7% in homes sold while Bonner County experienced a whopping 18.8% increase in the number of homes sold.

Nationally, the upward trend in prices is attributed, in large part, to the tight inventory of houses for sale. Over the last three years the national year over year price appreciation has averaged 5.4%. Month-to-month inventories have averaged just under four months over that time. Six months of inventory is considered healthy. The inventory in Boundary County is 7.6 months and in Bonner County it is 6.8 months. Kootenai County is very near the national average at 4.2 months of inventory. Yet median home sales prices have increased over that same three-year period nearly twice as much as the national average. Another indicator of a strengthening market can be seen from the days it takes for property to sell or days on market (DOM). In the three northern Idaho counties the DOM has declined 10% over the last year to 70 days. This is just about half the number of days it took to sell a home five years ago in north Idaho.

What does this mean going forward? Nationally, real estate prices should continue to increase modestly given the tight market and improved economic conditions moderated by interest rate increases (currently 4.6% for a 30-year fixed rate mortgage compared to 4% one year ago). Locally, indicators are that we will continue to see near double digit increases in prices. Inventory continues to be a challenge and north Idaho continues to be a bargain when compared to other western states. In north Idaho the median sales price is near $275,000 while in the western region of the US the median home sales price is approaching $400,000. If you are considering the purchase of a home now is a good time as, even though they are increasing, interest rates continue to remain near historic lows. Inventories of properties are tight so consult your real estate professional to help you find the property that is right for you.
