Tis the Season to be Jolly and Joyous Fa La La

If you are a Muppets fan you should be hearing the voice of Kermit the Frog singing that phrase by now. If it gets stuck in your head, I apologize.

As you know I love every season of the year and the Holiday Season is just one more that I adore. It’s here at last!

The trees have finally let go of their beautiful fall colors and were recently frosted white with our first serious snow of the year. For those who love all things holiday that first snow just does something to us. It is as if every wonderful memory we’ve ever had associated with the holidays comes flooding over us in a wave of good cheer and merriment. It is no use. We love snow.

We love decorating trees! We love the Holidays, and we love to love everything about them. Pure joy.

In this issue of the Round Up we have a little more home and hearth than usual. We have included a delightful holiday memory piece by Toni Hutto and some poetry by Joseph Smith pondering the ever present sawdust in his life. We have a great peanut butter fudge recipe and a wassail punch holiday drink you can try when you have loved ones coming to call in the next few weeks. We have run the wassail recipe before! It’s that good!

This weekend is the Christmas Fair over at the Bonner County Fairgrounds and it sounds like great fun for the whole family! You can read about it on page 5.

Here at the CO-OP we will have our annual Holiday Open House on Sunday December 9 from 12 - 2 PM. Santa will be here and he is looking forward to pictures with everyone! Even the Dogs and cats! All pets on a leash please.

On page 8 you can read about two of the coldest, snowiest winters we have ever experienced here in the Panhandle. These stories, which come to us from the Bonner County Historical Museum, are guaranteed to give you a good shiver. Make sure you have a hot cup of cocoa to sip as you read!

Over on page 25 you can catch our list of CO-OP Holiday Season Store closure hours - there are quite a few. These closures will be well posted in the store but we don’t want anyone to miss getting what they need because of this temporary scheduled hours change.

So as the season of joy, of giving, of merriment around the fire, of peace , family, and friends engulfs us this year the message from the CO-OP is “Thank You!” Thank you for letting us serve you this past year. We look forward to a even bigger, better time of sharing in the days and years to come .

Marketing Your Products Online $5 Wednesday, January 9, 1-3pm

There are many more ways to market your products online besides creating a website for that purpose. In this class, we will discuss a variety of approaches and why you might want to explore specific options based on your needs. For example, if you only have a few products you might want to market them using a social media platform like Facebook or Instagram.

There are websites that offer a virtual store, like Etsy, that might be better if you have an array of products for your virtual store. Whatever your approach, the key to successful online marketing is promoting your products to a targeted audience. This will be an introductory course. Class size limited to 30 people.

Pressure Canning $15 Wednesday, January 16, 1-4pm

Learn how to safely preserve low acid foods using a pressure canner. We will be making and canning Beefy Bolognese sauce during the class time.

Information on how to properly care for your pressure canner will also be provided. Class size is limited to 10 people.

Bonners Ferry Cereal School, FREE Thursday, January 24, 8am-2pm

Eight cereal school events are held across Idaho, sponsored by the Idaho Wheat Commission, the Idaho Barley Commission, and the University of Idaho. These educational workshops provide an opportunity for producers to learn about issues in their region, including insect issues, disease updates, variety trials, weed control, canola issues, markets, and more.

Pesticide recertification credits will be available. Includes a catered lunch.

Graft Your Own Apple Trees, $20 January 25, 1-3pm

In this two-part class, we will learn about collecting scion wood from your favorite apple trees while they are dormant (Part 1) and then we will graft the scions on to hardy rootstock later this spring (Part 2). Course fee covers grafting supplies and rootstock (and scion, if you don’t have your own) for grafting two apple trees. Class size limited to 16 people.

What You Need to Know

These days it seems like everyone is jumping on the home improvement bandwagon. There’s a wealth of information out there – in magazines, on the internet, and shows on networks like DIY and HGTV. However, whether you are looking at starting a small remodel project or a large one, achieving a new look can be tricky.

Though I specialize in new construction, remodels are some of my favorite projects. They challenge designers in a way that new builds simply do not.

With a remodel, it is necessary to marry the new with the old, bringing both together cohesively. For example, if you are finally able to replace your ancient blue carpet with hardwood, there are many things to consider. Though the carpet will be long gone, your trim, cabinetry, etc., will still influence the decisions you make in selecting the color and type of hardwood. So, though you may love a rustic, brushed gray European Oak, you may have to say no Automotive & Marine Performance Center to that particular flooring if your trim and other elements look horrible with it.

I’ve often heard it say that remodeling is a slippery slope and this is exactly LOCALLY OWNED AND OPERATED why. One decision, made without considering the impact on the look of the rest of the house, may then spawn other changes that the homeowner was not prepared to make – or pay for.

Countertops are a frequent remodeling addition. However, I would ask some pertinent questions before settling on a particular style and color. Does it compliment my existing cabiThe Area’s Premier Engine Builder netry and other finishes? If so, am I ready to add that into the budget as well? And Auto | Marine | Industrial be honest with yourself! I’ve had so many clients install new countertops Gas & Diesel only to find that the existing cabinetry looks dull and shabby in comparison to the shiny new granite!

Another upgrade that we see much of is changing out an old, fiberglass shower unit with a new tiled unit. In this case, my best advice would be to consult a professional. Though the DIY shows make tiling look easy, it is, in 32233 Hwy 200 • Sandpoint, ID 83864 • Sell, Buy & Trade fact a very precise art and waterproofing a shower or tub surround needs to be taken very seriously. Yes, there are some new products out there that make it a little less intimidating for the average homeowner, but they should still be installed by a professional to ensure the best result. It would be awful to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on tile and setting materials only to see it fail and experience water damage not only in your bathroom, but possibly the rest of your home as well.

An everyday remodel project that we see would be the changing of old wall-to-wall carpeting for new carpeting.

Though this seems like a no-brainer, here, too, you can run into issues if you’re not careful. The right salesperSOMETHING UNIQUE & HANDMADE FOR son will ask lots of questions. They are not being nosy, I promise, they are only helping you chose the right carEVERYONE ON YOUR LIST! pet for you and your family. They should as questions like: Do you have kids? How old are they? Do you have pets? How old are they? Do you live in town?

On a farm? On a mountain? On the lake? Do you take your shoes off when you walk in the door, or do you like to wear your boots to bed? All of these have bearing on what type of carpeting will fit your particular home and lifestyle. Questions that you should ask when looking at new carpeting include: Do you give free estimates?

What type of padding is included? What about moving furniture? All of these will not only affect the finished product, but the bottom line as well.

For a full house remodel, I definitely recommend consulting with a contractor. Often, when thinking about larger remodel projects we talk about “opening up” a space. A good, licensed contractor will be able to tell you which walls are structural, and which are not. Also, they will establish a game plan for adding beams or other supports to make your dreams of an open floor-plan a reality. They also have the ability to call in sub-contractors when needed, and especially in a market like we are experiencing now, that is no small feat!

All in all, now is a great time to fix up your home, but please remember to consider the overall look that you are trying to achieve and always, always find the right person for the job.

The Traditions We Celebrate With

The Holiday Season is upon us and just like any special day through the year these holidays are filled with tradition. What is tradition exactly?

Do we have to fly the American flag on July 4th? No, of course not. But it is the symbol of our country which currently, mostly, tolerates free thinking so we can choose to fly the flag or not. Still, it is tradition to do so. Must Thanksgiving dinner always include turkey and cranberries? Not really. In fact over the last twenty years the younger set has gone to great lengths to suggest that turkey and all the fixings is boring and needs an update. But turkey and cranberries have not been eradicated from Thanksgiving cuisine tradition just yet because serving this dish is tradition.

Images of pilgrims and the Wampanoag continue to pop up every November. Halloween cannot be celebrated, it seems, without pumpkins, corn stalks and black cats. And who would dream to remove Santa Clause from the joy and mystery that is Christmas? These are the makings of core traditions and even if they are not based in actual people, places, or events they persist throughout culture just the same. It has become the most amazing tapestry of a few real life events and stories plus savvy marketing woven in the most remarkable fabric. And we like it that way. It’s romantic.

Sleigh rides actually have nothing to do with Christmas except for a historic connection regarding transportation before a warmer and far more comfortable method became available. But sleigh rides are romantic aren’t they? Maybe not for the guy who has to catch the horse(s) and hitch them up on a freezing cold day with snow blowing through the barn, but certainly for young ladies bundled up waiting to go on a quiet moonlight ride with that special someone.

Christmas cards abound connecting Christmas to everything from ice skating to cowboys rescuing stranded calves, to snow covered bridges and wreaths hanging around horses necks. This marketing works because even though none of this has anything to do with Christmas, even though a parade has nothing to do with Thanksgiving and asking relative strangers for buckets of candy hardly says “Welcome Harvest”, it is the bundle of traditions we were brought up with and we like them. And we keep adding to them.

Pumpkin is a real food. You can make soup, pie, casseroles, and bread from this wonderful variety of squash. The word squash is not romantic. The word pumpkin IS. No one wants to shop the lists for a Fat Free Squash Latte with sprinkles. However, when the sustainable farming practices romance completes the cycle of trendy we may very well accept the phrase “Squash Latte.” It will be earthy, organic, natural. It will become romantic.

None of this is to say that traditions are silly or useless. They aren’t. They tend to bind the culture together when other things in culture would challenge the fabric stability. No matter what kind of election cycle has just been completed a “turkey and some mistletoe” is just around the corner. We will be feasting and smooching in no time at all and washing the season down with spiked eggnog and toasting the new year to come. This is how tradition works. And fortunately it never seems to be completely eradicated, just tweaked a little.

Pumpkin pie becomes pumpkin cheesecake. Mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, homemade rolls, green bean casserole and turkey become turkey soup in a bread bowl. Scarecrows give way to harvest theme wreaths and twinkle lights. Black cats are a very short lived obsession as are witches and candy. Soon swags of greenery adorn doorways and all manner of illumination bids friend and neighbor alike to “come in and sit a while.” This is tradition and so is going to Disneyland on Thanksgiving and Christmas. That part of the country, warmer and less snowy has it’s own set of traditions binding local culture together. Tradition is everywhere and in everything everyday.

Do we have to eat pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving? No, not really. Must we take our children and grandchildren to see Santa Clause at the Community Christmas tree? Nope. And what about that mistletoe? Traditions. They are what we use when we choose how to celebrate anything and every family and community has them. The question is what is our personal set of traditions, those acts we will pass on for our family to remember us by? We are limited only by our imagination on this one.

As North Idaho Winters Go, 1924 Was One for the Books By Cassi Marler

There have been a few winters in the history of Bonner County that have really topped them all. A few that really stick out as being the granddaddy of all winter storms. The ones that long-timers look back upon and say, “Yup, that was the worst winter I’ve known”.

One of the most well recorded accounts was known as the ‘Blizzard of 1924’. The suddenness of this storm is what caught the county off guard.

Mid-way through December, while the cafes’ were full of lunch diners, it was just a mere 40 degrees out with only light winds. Suddenly, the winds shifted and temperatures plunged – creating the perfect blizzard. As darkness took over the evening, the temperature read 13 degrees below zero, a whopping 53 degree drop in a few short hours, with winds whipping at over 60 mph through the little town of Sandpoint. Fences blew down, signs ripped from their posts, and enormous trees uprooted all around the county. It’s even said that the smokestack at the Dover mill blew over, and the railway station at Dover blew off its foundation and was turned completely around.

Electricity was out for anyone who had it, the phones were dead, and all the Western Union lines went down. One story even reports that after students were sent home that afternoon, the Jefferson School bus was blown off the road. For the next 24 hours, the blizzard raged. By Tuesday the storm finally let up, with temperatures remaining low. After all the damage that was done, the residents decided that the worst loss in the aftermath was a swath of evergreen trees of all different species between Troy, Montana and into Bonner County had all died, stunned by the sudden temperature drop.

Over forty years later, a winter struck Bonner County that many locals can still remember. There are stories of schools being closed for weeks at a time, buildings crushed by the weight of the snow, impassable roads, and the temperature dropping to a record breaking 37 degrees below zero. It was the winter of 1968, and Civil Defense organizations started offering winter advice, especially for those driving in the snow. The organization listed a kit of materials that they believed were the items necessary to pack in your vehicle during winter driving. Keep in mind, cell phones were not a invented yet, nor were they even in existence. Here is the list as printed by the Civil Defense in 1968: “The kit should contain two or more blankets, or a box of newspapers, a couple of one-gallon cans with plastic covers, or empty three-pound capped coffee cans for sanitary facilities, matches and candles, extra clothing, such as winter caps, mittens and galoshes, transistor radio, or car radio, for storm bulletins, compass and maps; pocket knife, first aid kit and a shovel, large box of facial tissue, a small sack of sand, for traction in snow and ice, flashlight or signal light to be used for SOS, or to find help; plastic scraper for windshield, booster battery cables, two chains, 20 inches or longer, a fire extinguisher, catalytic heater, and a compact alcohol stove.”

The beauty of northern Idaho is that we never know exactly what to expect when winter comes knocking at our door. Weed of the Month - Spotted Cat’s Ear

By Chase Youngdahl , Bonner County Weed Department By now most windows have closed for treating weeds—perennial turf weeds are an exception. While fall generally inspires activities other than something mundane (and mostly off the radar) like lawn maintenance, perhaps I can make a case for it being a worthwhile endeavor. The precipitation we receive throughout the fall wakes up a lawn from the late summer drought dormancy—at the same time, nutrients are being rapidly sent to the roots for winter dormancy. This set of circumstances opens the treatment window up until the time the landscape is snow covered, or frozen solid, whichever occurs first. If a fall herbicide and concurrent fertilizer application is made to a weed infested lawn, the desired turf grass will come on strong in the spring without the competition of the perennial broadleaf weeds. Weed of the Month is Spotted Cat’s Ear (Hypochaeris radicata), a Bonner County listed noxious weed and one that often finds its home in lawns. It’s a perennial with Dandelion-like basal leaves and leafless stems that emerge and grow 6-18 inches in height. The flowers [too] resemble what a Dandelion produces—multiple yellow petals making a disk shaped flower head about an inch in diameter. I think of Spotted Cat’s Ear as a cross between a Dandelion and a Rush Skeletonweed (it’s not an actual hybrid, that’s just what it reminds me of from a visual standpoint). The basal leaves have the shape and overall appearance of Dandelion basal leaves, but are rougher and covered with hairs as you would see in a Rush Skeletonweed rosette.

The stems have the same features as Rush Skeletonweed being branched and leafless, while the flowers that blossom on top of these leafless stems are nearly identical to that of a Dandelion.

In addition to turf, Spotted Cat’s Ear can also be found in pastures, orchards, garden beds, vacant landscapes and on roadsides. It will spread by both seeds and roots, although not in an immensely aggressive fashion by either. The seeds disburse in the wind, but they are very short lived in the soil as compared to most perennial noxious weeds. On the vegetative end, it can reproduce from the root crown, but not reliably from fragments of roots.

Control methods for Spotted Cat’s Ear include mechanical, cultural and herbicide. For mechanical control, dig the individual plants out with a Dandelion puller or screwdriver [if in turf], or with a small shovel if in a setting where more intrusion is tolerable. Generally, if you dig out most of the roots you’ll kill that plant, but being able to extract the entire root is more fail safe. Cultural control is the practice of keeping the surrounding desirables healthy; since water is not really an issue this time of year, fertilizer is your biggest ally in the vein of cultural control. A low nitrogen/high phosphorus and potassium blend is ideal, plants are not using nitrogen right now so a high nitrogen blend would only feed undesirable annuals (weeds & grasses). The more you can strengthen your perennial grasses in the fall, the more they’ll be able to outcompete weeds the following spring; and fertilizer can even be applied after some snowfall. Herbicide control options for use in turf includes Trimec Classic® (2,4-D + dicamba), Crossbow® (2,4-D + triclopyr) or Foundation® (2,4-D + triclopyr + dicamba + sulfentrazone). For control in range & pasture, Milestone® (aminopyralid), Opensight® (aminopyralid + metsulfuron), Curtail® (2,4-D + clopyralid) or Telar® (chlorsulfuron) are also effective. Other brand names for some of these active ingredients exist, the front page of the label lists the active ingredient(s). It is the responsibility of anyone making an herbicide application to read the label prior to use.

Since this edition is geared more towards lawns, I’ll just throw out there that in comparison to controlling other common turf weeds, I would rate Spotted Cat’s Ear as moderate—slightly more difficult than Dandelions or Plantains, but not as stubborn as Chickweed, Wild Violet or Ground Ivy. If a healthy, clean looking lawn appeals to you, go ahead and treat it now! We are still in the treatment window, but not for too much longer. Livingroom Conversations for Thanksgiving Gabrielle Duebendorfer, ND Political discussions around the thanksgiving table usually are avoided or end up in heated, draining exchanges. There is an alternative by engaging in Livingroom Conversation principles (www.livingroomconversations. org). I have been part of a bipartisan group of women who have discovered this process to be quite delightful and enlightening for building bridges with people we don’t usually spend time with or avoid certain topics.

The basis is to respect, relate, and connect, to discover an understanding of differing perspectives to find common ground. The specific focus is to learn how to listen to and communicate with each other to come up with viable solutions to topics that are dear to all of us. Right at the beginning we discovered the importance of how our media sources influence our perspectives. In order to discover common ground we need to be willing to fact check our sources from reliable “neutral “news outlets. This media chart ( https://www.adfontesmedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Media-BiasChart_4.0_8_28_2018-min.jpg ) has been very helpful in cutting through pure biased information. If we basically listen to Fox News, which is non factual and very biased towards the right, everything else seems very liberal. On the other hand, if we primarily listen to Daily Kos, we wrap ourselves in a very non factual liberal biased bubble. However, if you take a news source from the center, such as ABC news, we recognize more accurately which perspective other news comes from.

This whole process presents a challenge to examine our own perspectives and be open to other perspectives to avoid stalemates in discussions.

I personally have discovered how it feels to be “shut down” when I unexpectedly found myself silenced by the majority opinion about vaccinations.

When something gets represented as an undeniable, unarguable fact, there is not much room for conversation or emotional vulnerability. It has been my experience that vulnerable openings are like doors to deeper seeing, understanding, and connection. If we are not willing to question our own perspective, regardless of how much it maybe shored up by scientific evidence or tribal beliefs, there is no room to truly listen and respect the other side.

I just came across the topic of forgiveness on their website and thought it would be a great topic for the thanksgiving table. It can be as simple as forgiveness for somebody else having different political opinions and forgiveness for yourself for being stuck in your own. Idaho Hop Acres Increase 18 Percent in 2018 By Sean Ellis Idaho Farm Bureau Federation

POCATELLO – Idaho farmers added an additional 1,224 acres of hops this year, an 18 percent increase over 2017, while U.S. hop acres increased 4 percent to a record 55,339.

Idaho for the first time ever took over as the nation’s No. 2 hop producing state last year, surpassing Oregon in total production but not acres. This year, Idaho, which typically enjoys higher hop yields than Oregon, will be No. 2 in acres and production.

Idaho growers strung 8,217 hop acres for harvest in 2018, up from 6,993 in 2017, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, which released the numbers July 2.

Oregon farmers strung 7,849 hop acres, 2 less than during 2017.

Washington remained the unchallenged No. 1 hop state with 39,273 hop acres, a 2 percent increase over the 38,438-acre total for that state in 2017.

According to NASS, Idaho farmers produced 13.7 million pounds of hops last year from 6,993 acres, while Oregon growers produced 11.9 million pounds from 7,851 acres. Idaho hop yields averaged 1,968 pounds per acre in 2017 compared with 1,517 in Oregon.

U.S. and Idaho hop acres have expanded at a rapid rate in recent years, driven by soaring demand for aroma hops from the craft brewing industry.

Idaho hop growers strung 2,423 acres for harvest in 2012 and that number grew to 3,376 in 2013, then to 3,745 in 2014 and then to 4,863 in 2015, 5,648 in 2016 and 6,993 in 2017.

Prior to 2018, U.S. hop acreage increased 80 percent since 2012 and production by 77 percent.

But the supply and demand situation has begun to balance out and according to Hop Growers of America’s annual Statistical Report, released in February, “many industry leaders cautioned against additional acreage being added in the U.S. for the 2018 crop.”

But this year’s increase in acreage didn’t surprise industry leaders, who expected a slight bump because of previously entered hop contracts.

“I think a lot of the increase is due to contracts that people already had in place,” said Idaho hop farmer and Idaho Hop Commission Chairman Brock Obendorf.

HGA Administrator Ann George agreed, saying the increase in acres this year has mostly to do with growers fulfilling multi-year contracts. It took awhile for enough planting stock, particularly for newer hop varieties, to become available to fulfill those contracts, she said.

“Now we’re seeing the last of those acres go in,” George said. “It wasn’t surprising. We knew those were in the pipeline.”

As many contracts come up for renewal next year, it’s likely that U.S. hop acres will level out in 2019 or even decrease, George said.

BC Gardeners Seek Gardens for 2019 Tour by Ann Warwick

The Bonner County Gardeners Association has wrapped up another successful growing season, but that does not mean the organization is dormant for the winter. Plans for 2019 are already in the works. The annual BCGA Garden Tour is one project in the planning stage, and we could use some community assistance in finding interesting gardens to put on display for a day. The Tour takes place on a mid-July Sunday, and generally attracts up to 225 visitors. Gardens do not need to be perfect; gardens that are innovative, creative, or expressive of a gardening concept are welcome. If you would like to share your garden with the public for a day, or if you wish to nominate someone’s garden, you can contact BCGA at 208-265-2070 and leave a message, or email us at bcgardeners@gmail.com. Gifts from the Heart of the Garden Fall is when the abundance of the season is sometimes overwhelming, when we’ve canned, frozen, and dried as much as we will need for our household, and we still have not found uses for it all. With the holiday season coming, gifts of food or other garden products are always welcome, especially to those who don’t have gardens of their own, or the time to nurture plants during the summer.

Here are some ideas for gifts from your own garden: a “bouquet” of garlic; an attractive display of dry fruits--apples, pears, cherries, and plums from the orchard, and raisins from home-grown grapes. Friends and relatives always enjoy homemade jams, jellies and salsas. Pickles-beets, beans, cucumbers, asparagus-and relishes spark the taste buds. Dry some rosemary, thyme, sage, and oregano and make attractive labels for them. String dry peppers for an edible ornament.

From the flower garden, a dry flower arrangement, or cards made from pressed flowers and leaves, or cards or art pieces made from pounding the plant material into paper with, yes, a hammer, to release the colors. Use lavender to make sachets. Gifts for other gardeners can include seeds from favorite plants. A basket and bow complete a thoughtful and elegant gift.

If you live in a forest area, you can make wreaths or swags for seasonal gifts, and adorn them with an array of cones from various conifer trees.

Birch bark is a material that can be fashioned into seasonal ornaments or little boxes, or even woven baskets. Use your imagination to take natural materials and make them into art.

All of these ideas are inexpensive, but personal, in that you created and assembled them yourself, and sent them with love. And you don’t have to worry about choosing the right size or design of an item found on the internet and shipped without you ever even touching it. Happy Holidays!

Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness Winter Tracks program gets kids outside

Each year for the past five years, the Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness have been giving North Idaho, Western Montana and even Eastern Washington kids — and their teachers — a respite from the classroom and an adventure in the wintery outdoors. The FSPW Winter Tracks is an outdoor education program with a focus on the wonders of the winter season.

The program is an outgrowth of an adult education program begun a decade ago by FSPW and Brian Baxter of Libby’s Silver Cloud Associates. Baxter led a one-day winter tracking class then, and it blossomed into a year-round series of tracking, birding, biological and botanical classes based at the FSPW office in Heron, MT. In 2014, with then-assistant program coordinator Kristin Nowicki leading, FSPW began inviting schools to take part in these classes.

“Getting students into the field during the winter has become an important part of our education program,” said FSPW Deputy Executive Director Britta Mireley. “We want to deepen their sense of place, build community, and connect them to the outdoor world. Winter Tracks does that very nicely.”

Students learn about a variety of different topics in four to six learning modules per program. All modules are taught by knowledgeable community volunteers or FSPW staff members, broadening community connections.

Though learning modules may vary due to instructor expertise or school preference, the following modules were taught during the 2017-18 season: Tree Identification, Winter Birding, Animal Tracking, Leave No Trace, Skulls & Pelts, Avalanche Awareness and Orienteering.

Winter Tracks approaches Season Number Five The Winter Tracks program began its youth-oriented approach in 2014 with six fields days at locations as varied as Round Lake State Park and the East Fork of Blue Creek in Montana. About 150 kids from five schools benefited by the classes. During the 2017-2018 season, there were twelve program days, averaging 30 students per day, including students from twelve schools in three states and four counties. In Bonner County, kids from Sagle Elementary, Clark Fork Junior/Senior High School, and Sandpoint High School attended. FSPW also hosted kids from Troy, Libby, Trout Creek and Thompson Falls, Montana, and from Mead Alternative and West Valley School District in Washington.

“This, wouldn’t have been possible without our volunteers,” said Nancy Schmidt, the 2017-18 Winter Tracks director. “Forty different helpers contributed over 800 hours teaching, cooking hot dogs, directing small groups, and keeping everyone warm and safe.”

Area schools were already “booking space” for the 2018-19 Winter Tracks program in August, and FSPW looks forward to another successful season of getting kids outdoors.

This winter, Winter Tracks will benefit by a new curriculum guide created by Tyler Chisholm, who ran Winter Tracks duing the 2016-17 season. Chisholm, who works for the Park Service now, graduated from Western Washington University with a Masters of Education in Environmental Education, which made her a natural choice to create a standardized set of lesson plans for Winter Tracks volunteer instructors to use in preparation for sessions.

“The curriculum gives our instructors a great place to start from, with activities and games to get the kids involved and interested,” said Mireley. “This could be our best season ever.”

Through a combination of images and live samples, Identifying Idaho’s Trees will help participants quickly identify Idaho’s most common native trees, including: lodge pole pine • ponderosa pine • western white pine • western larch Douglas-fir • Engelmann spruce • grand fir • subalpine fir • western red cedar western hemlock • pacific yew • black cottonwood • quaking aspen • red alder

Turning Idaho Trees into Wreaths Saturday, December 1, 2018, 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm ($10/person, payable to “Bonner County Extension”) UI Sandpoint Organic Agriculture Center 10881 N. Boyer Road, Sandpoint Wreaths provide a beautiful decoration for the winter season. Learn to make a fresh wreath using native evergreen boughs. Many of Idaho’s native evergreen trees provide the perfect material for creating evergreen wreaths. Jennifer Jensen, UI Extension Educator, will discuss several methods of making wreaths. She will demonstrate how to create a wreath using a box wreath frame and then assist you in making your own wreath.

Supplies provided include a 12-inch wreath frame, wire, and a selection of native evergreen boughs. There may also be a selection of pine cones for decorations.

Plan to bring any special bows or ornaments you wish to add. Please also bring prun ing shears and gloves.

When I got up to go to work today and sat in my easy chair, As I pulled on my boots I noticed that something was already in there.

Sometimes I forget that I had a unique childhood. Or that it isn’t necessarily common to grow up on acreage, “off-the-grid”, in a log cabin When we moved to North Idaho, I was already accustomed to living simply and rural. We had lived on two acres of red clay in the mountains of Northern California with black bears and no electricity or running water. Even though our new home sported Grizzlies and Moose, it honestly was an upgrade because of the running water and the light switches.

It wasn’t until recently I pondered at the question if there is much of a difference between a little stick built house in suburbia and a little cabin on the back side of a mountain?

Summers were filled with horse-back riding and huckleberry picking.

Marshmallows and hotdogs around the fire-pit, fresh herbs and fruit from the garden, games of tag with our Bull Mastiff, and early mornings milking the goat. My six siblings and I lived outside most of the summer months. I think it was the Winter that made cabin living undeniably different than city living.

Winters are cold in North Idaho, sometimes we’d even have a white Thanksgiving. I have fond memories of sitting around the large table my Dad made, extended by a few card tables, all brought together by multiple harvest tablecloths, my family and friends enjoying mom’s holiday homemade feasts. The clinking of the dark green glass cups, the dripping gravy boat, the loud laughs coming from my Aunt Weez’s side of the table. And later, the comfort of having my grandparents there, they were always there, always at every event and occasion, my Grandma wrapped up in the large red knitted blanket, my Grandpa laughing and his handsome eyes sparkling. Somehow Christmas trees seem so naturally at home in log cabins; the evergreen aroma blending with the wood smoke. I am also convinced that stockings are meant to hang from wooden staircases, and Christmas morning sounds are supposed to include the chopping of kindling and the staccato beat of the percolator. The promise of coffee always awakened Mom and Dad. Or the times we would finally arrive back home from the dark and cold adventures of caroling. The tromping of the boys on the stairs to remove the wet clinging snow, the piles of wet boots, the need for extra socks, and the final satisfaction of piping mulled wassail.

I am sure that even in suburbia my mom would still have used wooden bowels and old fashioned mortar and pestles to chop her Thanksgiving herbs. And Dad still would have read aloud to us at night from Little House on the Prairie. Living in the city wouldn’t have moved my mom to buy a fake Christmas tree, or buy a grocery-store pumpkin pie. But I am quite confident that living in the woods, in a log cabin made my childhood winters all the more satisfying.

I pulled them back off and some sawdust fell out onto the floor Try as hard as you wish there’s always just a little bit more.

This sawdust is very intrusive I find it wherever I look.

I cannot seem to escape it. It’s in every cranny and nook.

I’ve got sawdust in my pockets, and sawdust in my shirt.

When sawdust gets into your eyes you will truly know, it hurts!

Now I’ve been making sawdust for well o’re 20 years.

I’ve wished at times that I could sell all the sawdust that’s in my ears!

It’d probably be worth a fortune but to a small sawmill man, Just being rid of the nasty stuff would be a wonderful plan.

I’ve got sawdust in my trousers and sawdust in my socks.

And if I dare to comb my hair,there is sawdust in my locks.

Sawdust in my lunch box and sawdust in my bed, I’m sure there are folks I know who’d say I’ve got sawdust in my head.

There’s sawdust in my tool box and in my coffee cup.

I’ve tried and tried to keep them clean but now I just give up.

The struggle seems so futile I think my mind will crack.

The itching is just brutal from sawdust down my back!

Sawdust in my eyebrows and sawdust up my nose, I really hate that scratchy feel of sawdust between my toes.

There’s sawdust in my pick-up and sawdust in my chair.

It seems to me, where ‘ere I be, there’s sawdust everywhere!

I remember as a boy when I was just a lad, We hauled logs to the sawmill. I went there with my Dad. And while the men unloaded my Dad’s old logging truck As soon as I would get the chance to the sawdust pile I snuck.

I thought it fun to romp and play in that old sawdust stack.

When we got home Mom got the broom and gave me several whacks!

Now that I’m grown we call it work when in the sawdust we must roll, Though the women folk think getting dirty really is our goal.

But of all the things I’ve seen and heard there can be no dispute, The hardest thing I’ve ever done was get sawdust out’a my boots!

Directions: Before you begin make sure you have a working candy thermometer.

In a heavy dutch kettle combine the sugars, milk, syrup and salt to the soft ball stage (240 degrees on a candy thermo meter.

Before removing from heat add the marshmallows, peanut butter and butter. Stir until blended, remove from heat and set aside to cool. Add flavoring and stir in well.

Pour fudge into a 9” x 11” pan or buttered glass casserole.

Let cool completely before cutting into squares. Store in an airtight container in the unlikely event you have any left!

5 Types of Mortgage Loans for Homebuyers by Judy Baird AVP, Branch Manager Mountain West Bank

Interest rates have been creeping up lately and have stimulated interest in either purchasing a home or refinancing an existing mortgage. Factors such as monthly budget (other expenses and income), being able to qualify for a loan and short and long term goals are as important as interest rates.

Short term and long term goals include factors such as how long do you anticipate staying in this home?

Will it be your primary residence or investment property? Are you eligible for some alternative financing programs?

Evaluating five key mortgage loan programs may result in savings for you or offer terms that may be more beneficial over the term of the loan. A conventional mortgage is a home loan that’s not insured by the federal government. There are two types of conventional loans: conforming and nonconforming loans.

A conforming loan simply means the loan amount falls within maximum limits set by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, government agencies that back most U.S. mortgages. On the other hand, loans that don’t meet these guidelines are considered non-conforming loans. Jumbo loans are the most common type of non-conforming loan.

Benefits of conventional mortgages may be used for a primary home, second home or investment property. Overall borrowing costs tend to be lower than other types of mortgages, even if interest rates are slightly higher. You can ask your lender to cancel PMI once you’ve gained 20 percent equity.

You can pay as little as 3 percent down for loans backed by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. Minimum FICO score of 620 or higher is required. Required debt-toincome ratio cannot exceed 45 to 50 percent. More than likely you must pay PMI if your down payment is less than 20 percent of the sales price. Significant documentation is required to verify income, assets, down payment and employment. Generally, lenders require you to pay private mortgage insurance on many conventional loans when you put down less than 20 percent of the home’s purchase price.

Conventional loans are ideal for borrowers with strong credit, a stable income and employment history, and a down payment of at least 3 percent.

Jumbo mortgages are conventional loans that have non-conforming loan limits. This means the home prices exceed federal loan limits. For 2018, the maximum conforming loan limit for single-family homes in most of the U.S. is $453,100, according to the Federal Housing Finance Agency. In certain high-cost areas, the price ceiling is $679,650. Jumbo loans are more common in higher-cost areas and generally require more in-depth documentation to qualify.

This means you can potentially borrow more money to buy a home in an expensive area and interest rates tend to be competitive with other conventional loans.

There are a few more requirements for a jumbo mortgage, including a down payment of at least 10 to 20 percent. A FICO score of 700 or higher typically is required, although some lenders will accept a minimum score of 660. Debt-to-income ratio cannot be above 45 percent and you must show you have significant assets (10 percent of the loan amount) in cash or savings accounts.

Jumbo loans make sense for more affluent buyers purchasing a high-end home. Jumbo borrowers should have good to excellent credit, high incomes and a substantial down payment. Many reputable lenders offer jumbo loans at competitive rates.

Another option for some are government-insured loan programs. Government-insured loans can help you finance a home when you don’t qualify for a conventional loan. Credit requirements are more relaxed, you don’t need a large down payment, and they are open to repeat and first-time buyers.

The U.S. government isn’t a mortgage lender, but it does play a role in helping more Americans become homeowners. Three government agencies back loans: the Federal Housing Administration (FHA loans), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA loans) and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA loans).

Backed by the FHA, these loans help make homeownership possible for borrowers who don’t have a large down payment saved up and don’t have pristine credit. Borrowers need a minimum FICO score of 580 to get FHA’s maximum 3.5 percent financing. However, a credit score of 500 is accepted with at least 10 percent down. FHA loans require two mortgage insurance premiums: one is paid upfront, and the other is paid annually for the life of the loan if you put less than 10 percent down. This can increase the overall cost of your mortgage.

VA loans provide flexible, low-interest mortgages for members of the U.S. military (active duty and veterans) and their families. VA loans do not require a down payment or PMI, and closing costs are generally capped and may be paid by the seller. A funding fee is charged on VA loans as a percentage of the loan amount to help offset the program’s cost to taxpayers. This fee,

as well as other closing costs, can be rolled into most VA loans or paid upfront at closing.

USDA loans help moderate- to low-income borrowers buy homes in rural areas. You must purchase a home in a USDA-eligible area and meet certain income limits to qualify. Some USDA loans do not require a down payment for eligible borrowers with low incomes.

You can expect to pay mandatory mortgage insurance premiums that cannot be canceled on some loans. You’ll have higher overall borrowing costs and you will need to expect to provide more documentation, depending on the loan type, to prove eligibility.

Government-insured loans are ideal if you have low cash savings, lessthan-stellar credit and can’t qualify for a conventional loan. VA loans tend to offer the best terms and most flexibility compared to other loan types for military borrowers.

Another option is the fixed rate loan. Interest rate remains the same over the life of your loan, which means your monthly mortgage principal and interest payment always stay the same and you can more precisely budget other expenses month to month. Fixed loans typically come in terms of 15, 20 or 30 years.

You’ll generally pay more interest with a longer-term, fixed-rate loan. It takes longer to build equity in your home and interest rates typically are higher than rates on adjustable-rate mortgages. Unlike the stability of fixedrate loans, adjustable-rate mortgages (ARMs) have fluctuating interest rates that can go up or down with market conditions. Many ARM products have a fixed interest rate for a few years before the loan resets to a variable interest rate for the remainder of the term, That way you enjoy a lower fixed rate in the first few years of homeownership, saving a substantial amount of money on interest payments. Look for an ARM that caps how much your interest rate or monthly mortgage rate can increase so you don’t wind up in financial trouble when the loan resets.

However, with an ARM, your monthly mortgage payments could become unaffordable as interest rates rise, resulting in a loan default. Home values may fall in a few years, making it harder to refinance or sell your home before the loan resets.

You must be comfortable with a certain level of risk before getting an ARM. If you don’t plan to stay in your home beyond a few years, an ARM could save you big on interest payments.

When considering any of these five options, establish a relationship early on with a mortgage loan officer. They are knowledgeable and trained to go over these programs with you and based upon your needs and personal finances, will guide you through the mortgage process. Buying or refinancing a home are big steps – work with a lender who will partner with you to determine what’s right for you.

You’ve Had Your Fun Boys - Time to Clean Up by Myron “Buzz” Watts

When we were sophomores in high school, there were five of us, we had a big washtub between us and that is what we would take Trick - or - Treating.

I don’t know why people gave us candy - we were older. But they did. When the tub got full and we got tired of packing it around that was the end of the night and we just had to eat it. That was back in 1950 or so.

Kenny Mott worked at the Schell station where Melody Muffler is currently located. He had a Ford convertible and when the top was up there was a hole behind the back seat. That’s where we kept our stash of candy most of the time.

Don Armour worked at the Mobile gas station which was located near the entrance to Bridge Street. He worked there with me. Don’s dad was a principle of several schools in Bonner County. Leonard Plaster worked in the Mobile gas station where Connies Cafe is now located. Ronnie May worked Phillips Brothers, at 5th and Cedar. We all had good jobs at gas stations in those days. It was good money for young fellows still in high school and we had money for a car and gas. It was a good time.

Now at the Phillips station all during the fall they had these gallon cans of antifreeze about 9’ x 12” deep – all kinds of antifreeze. They kept stacking these under the windows along the building just so people could see how much antifreeze they sold -to brag. It gave us an idea.

We decided we would drive in when the station was closed and throw the empty cans all over the parking lot which we did and we had a good time doing it. Little did we know that the five of us were not alone that night.

Harry Hupp was a city cop and at the time there was a picket fence dividing the station form the house next door. For some reason Harry was standing in the shadow of the fence that night and he watched the whole thing.

Real Estate “Slumps” Nationally Remains Strong LocallyJim Haynes, Associate Broker, Realm Partners

A headline on the front page of the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on October 20th read, “Home-Sales Slump Deepens.” The article cited National Association of Realtors statistics that showed that the number of houses sold dropped 4.1% in September from September a year ago and that this was the seventh consecutive month of declines. This means that every month since March there are less existing single-family homes sold than the previous month. This was confirmed by the National Association of Realtors web site. This may be the national trend, but it is not the trend of our local market.

In the seven-month span mentioned in the WSJ articled, the number of homes sold nationally dropped by 9% while they increased by 7% to 24% in the three northern Idaho counties.

Median home sales prices increased between 9% and 15% for the three northern Idaho counties in the seven months ending September 30, 2018 when compared to the same period a year earlier. Over this same seven-month period median home sales prices nationally increased 6% from $252,500 in 2017 to $267,800 in 2018.

Tight inventory is blamed for the national slowdown in the number of houses sold. Economists consider six months inventory to be in balance. At the end of September 2018 NAR reported there were 4.4 months of inventory which is up from 4.2 months in September of 2017. Locally, Kootenai County has 3.5 months of inventory while Bonner and Boundary Counties have 5.4 and 6.4 months respectively.

The tight market in Kootenai County helps explain the 15% increase in median home prices. Bonner and Kootenai County’s median home sales prices were below but very near the United States median home sales price in 2012 (see real estate statistics this page). Since then median home sale

prices have gone up faster in Kootenai and Bonner Counties than the national median home sales price. For the last twelve months the national median home sales price was $255,650. For Kootenai and Bonner County the median home sales price for the same period was $285,000 and $292,000 respectively.

Nationally, the real estate market does not look healthy and economists are concerned that it could weigh on the nation’s total economy. Regionally, it is a different story with our local real estate market contributing greatly to our local economy.

The median home price is that price at which half of the homes sold for more than that amount, and half sold for less than that amount. The median price is used to remove bias from home prices introduced by high end properties.
