The Cooperative Nature of Things Have you ever stood back and marvelled at the level of cooperation in nature? Bee hives are buzzing with tenants bent on pollinating every flower possible and those flowers then producing food for people. Our chickens eat bugs that are harmful to our gardens and guard dogs protect our lambs and all else under their charge. Can we grow food without the rain or sun?

And who tills the soils or amends it when needed? So much about this world requires cooperation to some degree to succeed.

The CO-OP Gas & Supply Company has been effectively doing business in the north Idaho area for over 80 years. But not just any kind of business - cooperative business. Over on page 26 we invite you to read about our history, how we arrived where we are today and how we have managed to give so much back to the community and remain profitable.

Part of cooperation is learning from one another skills necessary to sustain our lives. It also means providing goods and services at reasonable prices. While competition in the marketplace is good, the focus is often making money rather than providing goods and services in a way that allows a distribution of profits at the end of the year. This is what sets cooperatives apart from other retail type businesses.

Again this year The CO-OP is pleased to support 4-H, the County Fairs, local rodeos, FFA, school garden projects, a variety of agriculture based classes free of charge and the local museum charged with preserving our very history.

In the pages of this publication you will find an extensive list of classes, plant sales, fund raisers, opportunities to help your neighbors, places to hike and fish, local producers to shop, ideas for reaching a better frame of health for your mind and body and so much more.

When we choose to cooperate with one another we all gain. In the months to come before the next Round Up comes out, you will likely see several booths setup at a variety of places - the Lions Club seeking to sell raffle tickets to help pay for the wonderful annual fireworks display on July 4th. This is just another opportunity for community cooperation so we can all enjoy something together that is just really nice.

Maybe we can take a cue from nature and observe how living a cooperative life within our community is not only a good idea, it just makes sense.

Pack River Cemetary Clean Up Day

The Pack River Cemetery Association annual meeting and clean-up day will be Sunday May 22. The clean up will start about 1:00 p.m. with the annual meeting to follow at approximately 2:30 p.m. Two board members will be elected at the annual meeting.

We ask that objects (solar lights, planters, vases, etc.) you want to keep on the graves of loved ones be picked up prior to the clean-up day. They maybe replaced after the clean-up day.

Boundary County Extension Classes Coming Up This Spring and Summer

Better Safe than Sorry: Learn to Identify Wild Mushrooms $3 Monday, May 7, 7-9pm In this class we will discuss techniques for identifying wild mushrooms, and safety tips for those who wish to eat them. You will learn to use online reference guides to mushroom identification, and how to use keys to identify an unknown specimen. A guide to local mushrooms by time of year will also be distributed.

Cooking Gluten Free $3 Tuesday, May 8, 1-3pm Do you or someone in your family have an allergy or sensitivity to gluten?

Come join us and learn how you can prepare gluten free meals for your family while skipping the stress and frustration. This class will help you navigate the world of gluten free cooking by providing you with helpful tips as well as give you strategies to avoid the common mistakes many beginners make when switching to gluten free cooking.

Integrating Fungus in Your Garden $5 Wednesday, May 9, 1-4pm Come and learn how Boundary County resident Tony Klinkhammer has integrated mushroom production into his garden. This class will focus on planting King Straphoria mushrooms around your fruit trees and vegetable plants. Students will receive mushroom spawn to start a small bed in their garden.

Identifying Idaho’s Trees $10 Thursday, May 10, 6-8pm Because we have such a varied range of geography, soils, and precipitation patterns, Idaho has a wider variety of native trees than most other Rocky Mountain States. The first step in caring for these trees, whether they be in a landscape or in a forest, is correct species identification.

Cooking Under Pressure $10 Wednesday, May 23, 4-6pm Have an electric pressure cooker or thinking about buying one? Come join us to learn how to make quick and easy meals for your family. Don’t forget your apron because in this hands-on class we will make lemon butter chicken, brown rice, and New York cheesecake. We will also be comparing various brands of electric pressure cookers and seeing how each one operates in order to help you decide which type of electric pressure cooker best meets your needs.

Cost-Share and Value Added Producer Grant Workshop $3 Thursday, May 31, 7-9pm There are a number of USDA grant opportunities for producers but they can be confusing! Learn about value-added producer grants for business planning and working capital from the North Idaho Rural Development representative. Our local NRCS representative will also speak on the cost-share programs they have for landowners, including the popular High Tunnel grants.

Thinning & Pruning Field Day $20 Saturday, June 2, 9am-5pm Trees killed by by bark beetles or root diseases often make forest owners ask: “What can we do about it?” Whether you have problems with insects or disease, concerns about fire, or just want to improve forest health and growth, the response from foresters is nearly universal: thin your stand.

This is especially true in northern Idaho, where forests commonly become overstocked with an unsustainable species mix.

Water Bath Canning Basics $10 Thursday, June 7, 1-4pm Learn how to safely make and preserve your own high-acid foods including jams, jellies, tomato products, pickled vegetables, and fruits. This handson class will also teach participants about canning basics and proper care for your canner. Each participant will make their own jar of Balsamic-Onion Jam which they can pick up the day after the class.

Protecting our Pollinators FREE Thursday, June 7, 7-9pm You can do a lot to help bees and other pollinators through a combination of plant choices and careful management of pesticide usage. Commercial beekeepers are losing a large percentage of their bees each year due to diseases, pests, pesticide exposure, and loss of habitat. Learn what others around the country are doing to protect the pollinators that are so important to our food supply.

Techniques for Successful Composting $3 Thursday, June 14, 5-7pm In this class, you will learn many tricks for speeding up the composting process for your garden waste. Proper moisture levels, proper heap size, and checking the composition of the pile are all important to speeding up the process of converting organic waste to valuable finished compost.

Boundary County UI Extension Field Day FREE Thursday, June 28, 10am Please join us at the University of Idaho Variety Trials Field Day on Thursday, June 28, at 10am at Houck Farms on Farm to Market Road, Bonners Ferry. Researchers will describe results of their wheat, barley, canola, and mustard trials, comparing new releases to tried and true varieties. A sponsored lunch will be provided for preregistered participants. Speakers will discuss herbicide resistance packages and plantback restrictions, a blackleg update, and other current topics. Healthy Diabetes Plate FREE July 2nd, July 9th, July 16th, and July 23rd , 10am – 11:30am This 4-session class is designed for individuals with type 2 diabetes and the people who plan their meals. This class will use various methods to teach the types and amounts of foods that should be consumed using the diabetes meal plan. Although this class is geared primarily for individuals with type 2 diabetes, it’s a healthy way for all family members to eat. You don’t have to be a certain age or be diagnosed with diabetes to benefit from the Healthy Diabetes Plate approach to meal planning.

The Old Cocolalla Schoolhouse A Living Part of Bonner County History

A hundred years ago there were around forty one 2-room school houses in Bonner County, each the heart of a rural community when roads were often poor and impassable.Today, one of the only schoolhouses left as a community center is one at the south end of Cocolalla lake. The other is the Wrencoe Schoolhouse which still stands on the south end of Wrencoe Loop Road and continues to be used for community events. The rest have been torn down, moved, burned down, converted or left to decay. That makes the Cocolalla Schoolhouse a treasured part of history not just for the people of the area, but for the whole county. In fact, the big brass bell at Memorial Field once rang out from the belfry of Cocolalla schoolhouse to call the students each morning.

The last classes were held at Cocolalla in 1953 and for the past 61 years the schoolhouse has been repaired and preserved by the people of the community. It is the work of volunteers and donors that keep the building going.

This year the Cocolalla Community Hall will host two fund raising events: Flea Market Sale on Friday & Saturday June 22 & 23, 2018 with tables both inside and out. This event will run from 8 am - 3:30 pm on Friday, and 8 am - 1 pm on Saturday.

History Day Saturday October 27, 2018 with exhibits of local history, rare photographs, free refreshments, and a sale table featuring old photographs of Cocollala Community. Event may include limited outdoor antique and collectables.

As sawmills replenish log inventories coming out of spring break-up log sellers are finally enjoying some of the benefits associated with a very strong lumber market. Change Is Everywhere at the CO-OP

This past spring brought quite a few changes at the CO-OP. In March the cooperative membership celebrated one of the most profitable years on record and dividend checks were issued, a very welcome sight during the rainy days of spring.

March found the co-op moving through an event a year in the making: the installation of new General Manager George Haley taking the reins from retiring Ray Delay Jr., having served the CO-OP for 21 years. Also moving into a new position was Office Manager Linda Fitchett, now in the role of Administrator. Both are very excited about their new roles as expressed below.

Just when we thought we had reached the end of our class season local beekeepers, novice and advanced alike, asked for another beekeeping clinic. We were fortunate enough to have Jim Miller of Miller Homestead spend an entire day with us to talk all things beekeeping. The classes were attended by about 140 people.

April was a bit quiet but we were in the final stages of preparation for George’s Annual Tree Sale. This year more than 1200 trees went out to a little under 150 people. Our customers are the best! Their time in line was spent drinking coffee and visiting with their neighbors as three teams of coop employees filled orders! We think this was our best sale ever!

Now it is May and with the last few days of sun we have had the pleasure of providing goods and services to our members and other customers who are trying to get gardens in, yards whipped into shape and somehow find the time to enjoy the fast approaching summer!

Memorial Day is Monday May 28th this year and the CO-OP will be closed that day in honor of the day. We will reopen at 7 am the following morning for regular business hours.

This summer the CO-OP will be helping with the Southside Community School Garden project. For our part we have provided some seeds and plants, but summer raised bed maintenance is on the agenda too! The school is quite faithful in using the produce from the gardens as healthy additions to the lunch program.

And finally the bedding plants and tomatoes will be coming in for the next couple of weeks. These plants are grown locally for this area and our prices are quite competitive for the size and quality you will find. Some of them are even on display in our updated seasonal space. Familiar Faces Embrace Leadership Changes at the CO-OP Linda Fitchett and George Haley take on new leadership roles at The CO-OP Gas & Supply Co., Inc. The CO-OP has been an active cooperative business in the Sandpoint area for more than 83 years. This kind of staying power in business is often attributed to wise business ideas and decisions. It is also about finding the best people to bring those ideas to fruition. Over the years The CO-OP has found scores of hard working men and women willing to embrace the cooperative business model and lend their own life skills to grow the company. In this way The COOP has moved through decades of change necessary to adapt to the new rural agriculture landscape in north Idaho.

The CO-OP was fortunate enough to have Mr. Ray Delay Jr. as General Manager for the last 21 years. Ray’s careful management style along with support from the Board of Directors has allowed the CO-OP to navigate some difficult waters over the years and emerge a strong cooperative. With more than 4,000 members and in excess of $10 million in sales annually, the local energy, farm, home, and hardware company remains debt free. The cooperative paid out over $123,000 in dividends for year ending in 2017 and paid $1.3million cash back to the community over the last 15 years.

As with most companies, change often comes at the leadership level as the old guard hands the reins to new hearts and minds ready to accept the challenges of future business development. Such is the nature of change at The CO-OP. As of March 28, 2018, the General Manager position has been filled from within by a very familiar face, that of George Haley. George has been working at the CO-OP for 10 years, 2 years of which he has spent as Store Manager.

Spring Time Horse & Human Assessments Every spring after a cold, dark winter folks start getting excited at the prospect of the upcoming riding season. For most people in the inland northwest, there is a major decrease in the amount of ride/horse time during the winter months. Below are some ideas to help safely get you back in the saddle!

Equine Health Assessment: I suggest an evaluation with a vet or trained professional to help you recognize any health issues your horse might have and to create a plan on how to address them. Reevaluate your feed program and make any needed adjustments due to changes in weather, increase in physical work, etc. Keeping a calendar that tracks veterinary work, chiropractic work, farrier care, vaccinations/worming schedule, changes in feed, work/training program, etc. can be a futuristic tool and a historical reference in the case of any future health issues.

Tack Assessment: Horses vary in how they handle the transition from a tough winter to spring and often tack that fit the previous fall, no long fits your horse in the spring. More than 75% of all horses I encounter have ill-fitting tack. Not only can it cause debilitating physical issues, but it can cause “bad attitudes” towards being caught/tacked/mounted/ridden from anticipation of potential pain when ridden. Evaluate why you are using the gear you are, if it is appropriate, check all stitching, leather, etc. to make sure it is in safe, usable condition. It is also a good time to pull out the saddle soap and glycerin and give an in-depth cleaning to all of your gear.

Mental/Emotional Equine Assessment: Every spring I start receiving daily emails from horse owners wondering what they should be doing with their horses after a long winter off. Often the “horse” that was turned out in the fall seems nothing like the one brought in during the spring time. It might be a good idea to ask for a professional’s opinion to assess the horse’s availability to be worked with. Many folks get hurt by “assuming” or being hopeful when resuming work with their horse in the spring time.

Mental/Emotional Human Assessment: I find a lot of folks are often “lost” in what they want to do with their horse, because of a lack of clarity in their own equine related goals. Take some time and write a list of short and long term goals for yourself (all of which can evolve throughout the riding season.)

Then considering the horse you currently have, and ask yourself if those goals are appropriate for your current horse; if so, how will you implement working towards them? If they aren’t appropriate for your horse, assess if the goals and tasks are more important to you versus the partnership with your current horse and his abilities. If the goals might over-face your horse, but you want to continue working with the same horse, come up with attainable, alternative options for you and your horse’s current abilities.

Equine’s Physical Condition Assessment: Horses can come off winter with a lot of muscle loss and a bit of a hay belly. Come up with a reasonable conditioning plan (appropriate for your horse’s age, physical/abilities) to slowly help your equine partner get back into shape. As the horse starts to build muscle, remember to reevaluate saddle fit, as it can change greatly.

Human’s Physical Condition Assessment: Folks focus on the condition of their horse, without giving much regard to their own fitness. Whether you’re a pleasure or competitive rider, the better your cardio condition, flexibility and physical stamina, the better rider/partner you’ll be for your horse.

Riders often don’t realize a major contributor to the misuse of aids in the saddle is often due to them compensating, gripping, hanging, “holding on”, as a result of muscle exhaustion, inadvertently also miscuing the horse. The better shape you are as a rider, the better partner you will be to your horse.

Human’s Riding Experience Assessment: If your current riding abilities/experience leave you feeling unsure about getting back in the saddle, consult with a professional and take lessons or enroll in a training program.

Whether you’re a novice horseperson or have ridden for 30 years, there is always more to learn, refine and finesse. Sometimes people and horses get “stuck” in patterns and it takes an outside perspective to help break that cycle. Please do your research and remember that just because someone says they are a horse trainer, does not mean they will be a good fit for you and horse. Be sure to audit lessons/training sessions and get references from other current students before signing up to work with a new trainer.

Trailer Safety Assessment: If you’re planning on hauling your horse anywhere, be sure to have a thorough inspection of both your tow vehicle and horse trailer. Check electrical/wiring, tires (including the spare tire), brakes, floorboards, rust, possible wasp nests, etc. always suggest keeping an emergency equine vet kit, human first aid kit, unexpired fire extinguisher, 5 gallon water jug and bucket, electrolytes, spare halter and lead rope, jack/ tire iron, and road flares in the trailer.

By taking the initial time to assess each of the above topics will help decrease the “guess work” with your horse, increase you and your horse’s safety and well being, and will lead to the start of a great riding season!

Weed of the Month

By Chase Youngdahl The sluggish start to spring has put vegetative development behind schedule, which is something to take in to account in regards to planning for treatments of weeds. I’m hoping by the time this gets published the weather will have snapped out of the perpetual funk of low temperatures and high precipitation (including snow at times), although I won’t hold my breath! With the anticipation that conditions will eventually reflect the time of year, it will be time to get out on the lands and deal with the weeds. Bonner County offers a financial assistance program for residents that group together to spray state listed noxious weeds on non-commercial property; the funds come primarily from the Idaho State Department of Agriculture via grants with the county contributing some supplemental funds. The program may provide up to $500 per landowner for reimbursement of herbicide costs and the pre-application is due to the Bonner County Weeds office by May 31.

One of those state listed noxious weeds that Bonner County residents battle on a regular basis is Canada Thistle (Cirsium arvense), weed of the month for May. Most thistles are biennials, but this one is a perennial, and a voracious one at that. Grows 1 to 5 feet tall with spiny lobed leaves and disk flowers that range in color from light lavender to rose-purple. At a glance while in the flowering stage, Canada Thistle may appear similar to Spotted Knapweed until you see the plant structure. Propagation is equally as prolific by seed as it is by roots—the root system of each plant travels 15 feet deep and 20 feet laterally, producing shoots vegetatively along the way. The seeds are very lightweight and disperse in the wind, up to 5,000 of them per stem.

Canada Thistle is found in a myriad of locations; ranges/pastures, lawns/ turf, forest production lands, meadows, roadsides, gardens and stream banks. A small patch can be become a large patch in a hurry due to the rapid spread, don’t let it go to seed! The seeds can travel up to 2 miles infecting your neighbor’s land, and the seed viability in the soil can be 20+ years.

The impact Canada Thistle has on the landscape is extensive—it can take over a pasture and crowd out desirable forage for livestock as quickly as you might imagine given the rate of spread, and it can cause serious damage to agricultural crops by not only outcompeting the crop for resources but harboring destructive aphids. In addition, if Canada Thistle finds its way in to your yard, you (or your kids and/or grandkids) can forget about walking barefoot on the lawn.

Control is somewhat of a challenge [for reasons described above], at least from the standpoint of integrated management.

Repeated mowing is a method that may suppress flower formation, which will keep the plants from producing seed but they will continue to spread with their lateral roots. Cultivation will only provide control if performed every 2-3 weeks (minimum) throughout the entire growing season, otherwise you will only enhance the spread by increasing root fragments. Keep in mind, if mechanical control is the desired approach the key is to exhaust the root system of stored nutrients, this requires persistence. Biological control options are limited, at best. A stem gall fly has been used with hopes of reducing plant vigor and stopping or slowing flower production, however it has not had any notable impacts on Canada Thistle populations and is no longer released. As far as grazing, it’s a long shot—goats may graze the flower heads but the plants themselves are too spiny for consumption. There are several herbicides on the market that provide some degree of control for Canada Thistle, I will share a few that have shown to be successful, but remember to always read product labels. In range & pasture situations Milestone® (aminopyralid) may provide up to 3 years of control, this chemistry is lethal on thistles and if you have a use site allowable by the label this one is a great option. Transline® or Stinger® (clopyralid) can be used alongside and over the top of conifers safely in forestry applications and is an effective option on thistles. In turf situations Crossbow® (triclopyr + 2,4-D ester) or Trimec® (2,4-D amine + dicamba) have shown to be adequate options on those use sites. Contact the Bonner County Weeds office or visit your favorite herbicide supplier for further advice on product choices and allowable use sites. Ah, May. Flowers are blooming, the days lengthen, and Mother’s Day is approaching. Why not celebrate both spring and Mom’s special day by visiting the annual BCGA Spring Plant Sale on Friday, May 11 from 9m to 6pm and Saturday, May 12 from 9am to 3pm? Members of the BC Gardeners will donate perennial plants from their gardens and lovingly tended veggie starts and annual flowers grown just for this sale. The perennial selection is always interesting and varied, with some plants that are rarely found in nurseries, and others that are old fashioned favorites that thrive in our climate. A bonus is that these plants are already adapted to our conditions, as they are from local gardens. The annuals will include favorite flowers such as cosmos and zinnias, and a great selection of tomato, pepper, and other veggie, berry, and herb starts. The Lure of Statin Drugs

by Gabrielle Duebendorfer, ND On a recent gorgeously sunny yet freezing day with lots of fresh snow, we went exploring in the woods behind our house. Well, the path disappeared and we had no idea where we would come out. Navigating brush, hidden fallen trees, steep slopes and many falls, we finally came out at a familiar patch – reconnecting with a new perspective.

I was giving a presentation at the recent naturopathic oncologist conference (OncANP) in Phoenix Arizona. Something compelled me to present a case study of my Mom’s journey with cancer, as it was quite unique with her refusing all treatments – conventional or naturopathic. However, I wasn’t quite sure how the presentation would unfold and what my final conclusions actually would be. I would like to share what came of this authentic daring to step out and then reconnecting with a new perspective.

I was facing a conflict between the conference requirement of evidencebased medicine and my desire to share the human aspect of the cancer journey all the way into death. My decision to go with the latter was confirmed by a lecture that focused on “Post Traumatic Growth. Cancer patients and survivors deal with major disruption of their entire life construct.

Conventional support focuses on adaption and avoidance of this disruption with the attempt to make everything return back to normal as quickly as possible. However, there is an opportunity here to re-evaluate meaning and purpose and allow for deep transformation, which can foster healing whether the cancer journey leads to death or cancer regression.

Another presentation focused on two basic physiological requirements for spontaneous remission to occur: (1) immune stimulation and (2) antigenic presentation. Cancer cells are very adept at hiding from the immune system. To reverse that process either the tumor antigens have to be exposed and/or the immune system has to be more sensitized.

It has long been known that cancers regress during an active injury and severe infection. Coley’s toxin, hyperthermia, and mistletoe injections have been used based on the understanding that it’s not the bacteria but the resulting fever and inflammation that is making the immune system more alert.

Curiously, vaccines also seem to be responsible for cancer remissions. For example, cholera vaccine has been shown to reduce mortality of colorectal cancer. There are case reports of metastatic melanoma regressing with DPT shots. The nasty stuff that we don’t like in the vaccines and which is there to make it more effective, might just cause more immune stimulation for the immune system to recognize cancer cells.

So here comes part two, namely exposing the tumor cell antigens to the activated immune cells. Tumor injury is the most direct way to achieve this.

This can be achieved by biopsy, radiation therapy, chemo, or cryo-ablation.

It is a commonly known fact that radiotherapy of a tumor can cause metastatic regression in a different part of the body. There are numerous studies using PD1 inhibitor immune therapy drugs concurrently with radiation therapy. They act like a Harry Potter cloak – they remove the inhibition of immune cells to recognize cancer cells. The disturbance of the tumor via radiation together with a stimulated immune system has been shown to improve survival.

This presents very exciting possibilities for combining natural medicine with conventional medicine to improve the chances of spontaneous remission. Beyond the idea of getting vaccinated or injured, we can use herbs that have been shown to improve vaccinations, such as Astragalus, during conventional treatment. We can use hyperthermia, Mistletoe injections, and other herbs or mushrooms that have evidence to stimulate the immune system to clean up after conventional treatment. We might use mushrooms like Coriolus, which acts like a PD1 inhibitor, before conventional treatment.

Improving gut microbiome diversity as well as reducing Insulin Growth Factor has been shown to improve PD1 inhibitor treatment. Lots of evidence was presented that exercise and modulation of stress response increase survival rates.

Considering all these conventional treatments this might not sound like spontaneous remission. Actually, several studies confirmed that there is no equivalent alternative to conventional treatment. For example breast and lung cancer patients without conventional treatment had a 400% and 100% decrease in overall survival respectively. Natural treatments generally are just not powerful enough to reduce tumor load enough for the immune system, even if stimulated, to take care of. However, we can increase the chances of spontaneous remission by applying what we know both physiologically and psychologically. And that includes the previously mentioned concept of post-traumatic growth.

This concept represents the underlying thread in cases described in the books “Spontaneous Remission” by Dr. Kelly Turner, and “A Mind of Your Own” by Dr Kelly Morgan. Maybe disease is not just a way to deal with toxins, but also a way of the body to say: “hey, you need to pay attention here, you can’t just continue to stuff everything under the carpet.” As Dr. Schubiner describes so eloquently in “Unlearn Your Own Pain”, often it is easier to deal with physical disease than emotional pain.

Cancer and the disease process might just provide the opportunity to reveal an internal conflict that has been keeping the immune system busy, tying up a lot of energy and causing chronic low-grade inflammation, a per-

fect milieu for cancer to grow. By facilitating integration of unresolved issues and uncovering deeper meaning, we are potentially freeing the immune system to address the actual cancer. It’s kind of like the PD1 inhibitors removing a block on the immune system so it can attack the tumor.

Encouraging post-traumatic growth is a powerful tool, and can be facilitated

by MBSR, meditation, reflection, prayer, iRest dialogue, positive psychology and various other tools. My presentation was a living, learning example of how to do this as a caregiver – I very deliberately took my doctor hat off, because I wanted to be fully present with my Mom to facilitate her healing process. She had a very full life and wanted to face this last phase as fully as possible. She ended up dying but the whole process was an important part of her healing journey, as unresolved, long buried issues got integrated.

Others have more desire to live and can take advantage of conventional medicine’s powerful way to disturb the tumor, thus presenting tumor antigens to an immune system that is activated by immunotherapy drugs and/or natural agents. Either can benefit from the opportunity to transform trauma into growth, which might just increase one’s chance for spontaneous remission and an opening to a more meaningful and joyful life.

Stepping into new territory with authentically presenting my Mom’s case at a conference allowed new perspectives to open and reconnect on a different level. My presentation showed the human side that cancer patients and their caregivers go through to physicians and stimulated discussion about not just including but also going beyond evidenced based medicine. Inspiration can open new windows and doors and provide renewed motivation.

Most London Broil cuts are 2 - 3 lbs. so make sure your crock pot is big enough to accept the whole piece.

Place London Broil in the crock pot. Season both sides. Add enough water to just come to halfway up the meat. Cover and set for 6 - 8 hours, turning only once during the cooking time.

When the meat is done cooking keep the existing juices and pull the meat into shreds. Add one or two bottles of your favorite BBQ Sauce. This is really about how sloppy you want your BBQ to be.

Allow the sauce to heat through the meat for about half an hour on low.

Serve BBQ meat on hoagie rolls with grated cheese, onion, or any other addition you like. And feel free to add more sauce!

Riding Trails Through the Mountains of Life

As I’m driving across the Long Bridge, heading north towards Sandpoint, I look across at the snow capped Cabinet Mountains…and they seem to call to me. Memories begin to flood back into my mind of horseback riding the high mountain divide trail between Montana and Idaho. I remember standing with my horse on top of Pend Oreille Peak, looking for elk in the mountain meadows below, riding the steep boulder strewn trail to Mt. Willard, or enjoying a campfire on a cold day at Purdy Mountain.

While roasting a smokie and then laying back, enjoying the vast view of the Sandpoint Valley….far below.

Stopping to water the horses at Divide Lake, we see a sow bear and her twin cubs scrambling up the hill away from us.My mind continues to wander back to the time when I took a full day to ride up the Strong Creek Drainage to the top of Round Top Mountain. From the tippy top of Round Top, you feel like you are truly on top of the world! Looking to the South, I can see the full length of Pend Oreille Lake clear to the cliffs of Bernard Peak at the South end of the Lake where the mountain goats hang out….across Button Hook Bay to Farragut State Park. THIS is the type of horseback riding I enjoy!

Hi! My name is Marcy Ott. I have lived in Sagle for the last 25 years. My passions in life have been my Kids, riding my horses in the mountains, dutch oven cooking, and just being outdoors. I grew up in Bellevue and Kirkland WA. On the West side of the state. I attended the University of Idaho, got married and in a roundabout way ended up in Sagle. Within the first year of landing in Sagle, I was soon to be a single Mom with the responsibility of raising my four young children, all under the age of ten.

My kids all went to school and grew up right here. During that time I had jobs at Pend Oreille Veterinary, Litehouse Custom Printing,The View Restaurant, and ten years at Western Pleasure Guest Ranch. Even working full time, it was hard to make ends meet, But we all made it and my kids were what kept me going. They are all in their thirties now, and live and work locally. As a result of growing up doing hard work, rural values and a great local education, they are all independent and successful as adults. I am Very proud of them!

I have been diabetic, now, for over 20 years, starting with gestational diabetes. In 2000, I was officially diagnosed as Type 1, which is an autoimmune disease, and now I live with the consequences of this disease. Starting in 2009, I begin experiencing intermittent blindness in both eyes. After 6 eye surgeries….thankfully, I now have better eyes then I have had all my life. In 2011, breast cancer was detected.Thankfully, it had not spread but I still went through the the entire protocol of surgery and radiation.

Again, in 2012, melanoma skin cancer was found and was quickly removed. By this time I was feeling the exhaustion of constant medical procedures and just as I felt I was going to be in the clear I was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease in 2013…which is kidney failure. I started kidney dialysis right away….

Beginning a rigorous schedule of 3 days a week for 4 hours each of those days. THIS has become my “new normal”. I have now been on kidney dialysis for five years….nine years since this all began. Without my Faith in God, I could never have met these challenges, as I have.

I am now five years cancer free from the breast cancer, which is a requirement to get on the kidney transplant list, working with Sacred Heart Hospital to get everything in order. One essential requirement is to raise the money to cover those things that my insurance doesn’t cover - such as transportation, housing, in home care, etc. These needed funds will also go to helping with expensive co-pays for anti rejection drugs for a lifetime.

I now spend much of my time with my Bible study group and reaching out to elderly people on dialysis. Many of lonely and I love these people and their incredible life stories…I call them “living history.” This is a gift I hope to keep on giving as God brings them into my life.

So many in this community have blessed me with their wonderful friendships over the years and now my prayer is that you might find the generosity to help me, whether financially or in your prayers. I have had to sell my horses to focus on my health. I am hopeful that with God’s help and your help that I will see the day when I can get back on a horse and ride the trail back to a healthy life….those trails are still calling me….to Boulder…to Iron Mountain….to Pack Saddle.

Farragut Shooting Range To Open

The Farragut Shooting Range will open for the 2018 season on Friday, May 4th. It will be open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until 5 p.m. through the first week in November.

The range is managed by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) and has been the recipient of several range grants from the National Wild Turkey Federation, the NRA, and the IDFG range improvement program for safety and facility upgrades.

A new range office and maintenance building were completed near the end of the 2016 shooting season.

A 3-D archery course was added in the summer of 2017. Archery targets have been purchased with grants from the National Wild Turkey Federation ($1400) and the NRA ($6000). A temporary, primitive known distance archery range is planned to be set up this summer, with hopes of obtaining funds for a fully developed known distance range over the next two years.

Only target points can be used (no broadheads) on the new range, a standard practice for archery ranges.

In the next few years, lighting will be installed in the shooting bays. Shooters have indicated that the overhanging roof makes the shooting stations a little dark.

An IDFG shooting range grant will provide funding to develop classroom space and flush toilets. This will provide a great facility to host hunter education classes, gun safety and marksmanship training, and a climate controlled space for organized shooting events. Construction on these improvements should begin next spring.

Idaho Fish and Game Biologist Dave Leptich has overseen Farragut Shooting Range improvements. Leptich said, “Since fully reopening after safety improvements were completed, range use has increased significantly over the last three years.” Leptich anticipates additional growth in use. “The addition of archery to the Farragut Range facilities broadens the services the range provides the public, and will be popular with families and competitors in addition to the bow hunting community,” added Leptich. “The new classroom space next season will provide even more new opportunities at the facility.”

Leptich manages the range for IDFG in cooperation with staff at Farragut State Park near where the range is located. The range provides handgun, small-bore rifle, high power rifle, and shotgun shooting venues to accommodate a broad range of shooting sports interests.

Reserved use of the range can be accommodated on both normal days of operation and days when the range is closed to the general public. “Reserved use continues to grow,” said Leptich. “We host a local muzzleloaders club monthly. The range has also been reserved for formal firearms and marksmanship training classes, and some limited law enforcement training.”

The user fee for the range remains a modest $5.00 per person per day. Additional charges apply to reserved use.

Range access is off Perimeter Road on the east side of Farragut State Park and approximately 1.5 miles north of the traffic circle on highway 54. This is just before you enter Farragut State Park. This allows those who are only using the range to avoid paying the Farragut State Park entrance fee on top of the range use fee. Those who wish to take advantage of other Farragut State Park facilities will need to purchase either an annual Idaho State Park pass, or pay the daily park entrance fee.

All range activities are monitored and supervised by an NRA Certified or similarly credentialed Range Safety Officer (RSO). At least one RSO is present on-site each day of operation. The RSO’s are responsible to, and act under the direction of, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. All Range Safety Officers are volunteers. The range would need to close without their generous gift of time and service. Please tell them thank you.

RSO’s are there to educate you about and enforce the range rules that keep you safe. They also protect, maintain, and otherwise ensure the

ntegrity of the range infrastructure. They are there to help you have an enjoyable experience at the Farragut Shooting Range. If you have a question about the range or its use, please ask them. However, while they may be able to offer a word of friendly shooting advice or assist with a common firearm malfunction, RSO’s are not shooting coaches or gunsmiths. If you desire firearms training or have a firearm with a significant malfunction that you cannot clear easily seek the services of a trained professional.

Bonner County Farm Bureau - An Advocate for Rural Idaho

For over 50 years the Bonner County Farm Bureau has been involved in the life and culture of our community. This column will discuss the activities and programs of this important advocate of agriculture and rural lifestyle, starting with a short history of the beginning of the Farm Bureau organization.

The American Farm Bureau Federation officially began in 1919 in Chicago when 500 farmers from 32 states met to discuss improving the national farm policies. These representatives realized that collectively they would have a much greater affect on national issues than by working separately. The first items on the new organization’s agenda included rural infrastructure, commodity pricing, farm credit and the opportunity to represent producers with cooperatives.

The Federation quickly became successful in advocating for the agricultural interests and by the end of 1919, 22 state Farm Bureaus representing more than 800 counties and over 300,00 members were recognized by the American Farm Bureau Federation.

The situation for farmers and ranchers in the early years of the organization was dire. The world wide Great Depression and surplus production had resulted in lower crop prices. Farm foreclosures were taking place all across the country. Mother Nature added an especially negative element to the mix by creating the Dust Bowl following several years of drought. Farm families were losing all that they had. The Farm Bureau became the strong advocate for aiding the farming community during this difficult time.

While national issues were a major part of the farm bureau effort, local and state issues were becoming more important as well. Farm Bureaus were getting more involved in state legislatures and in supporting local candidates for county and state office. Educating the public about farm issues and the agricultural industry became an important part of the farm bureau policy. Providing support for it members was also a growing part of the bureau’s mission. Early projects included a fertilizer plant, machinery, tire and fuel outlets, a seed distributor, a marketing branch, and a finance company. Because farmers and ranchers needed protection for specialized machinery, equipment and property improvements, a mutual insurance company was formed to help give protection to the agricultural community at competitive rates.

Idaho joined the Federation in 1939. Rural communities had been forming agricultural organizations since 1918 in Idaho, but there was not a formal statewide alliance. In September of 1939, representatives of these communities and other interested farmers and ranchers met in Murtaugh, Idaho with a representative from the American Farm Bureau Federation and formed the Idaho Farm Bureau Federation In the beginning, Idaho’s Farm Bureaus were concentrated in the southern part of the state. The vast number of acres under production, the diversity of crops harvested and the large number of farmers and ranchers involved in southern Idaho resulted in concentrated growth of Farm Bureaus and members in the region. While some individual agricultural groups, and even farm bureaus, existed up north, they operated independently. Separated by distance and by the region’s smaller agricultural component, the Farm Bureau movement did not take hold in Northern Idaho until improved infrastructure made the north more accessible. In the 1960s, the Idaho Farm Bureau began to look at the northern counties as potential allies in their efforts to support agriculture in the state.

National politics presented a further obstacle to the north becoming actively involved in the new organization. After his inauguration, John F. Kennedy brought a policy of government control of agricultural output to counter the surpluses of commodities being produced. The Great Wheat Referendum was put before the country to determine if the free market or government control would become the national agricultural policy. Southern Idaho favored free market. Northern Idaho, where wheat was a major crop, favored the Kennedy plan. Until the Referendum was decided, there was an uncomfortable friction between north and south. In 1963, the country rejected Kennedy’s plan and cooperation between the northern counties and the rest of the Idaho Farm Bureau became possible.

The Bonner and Boundary County Farm Bureaus and were organized and recognized by the State Bureau in 1967. The first board members are a who’s who of Bonner County farm families. Glen Judge served as the new Bureau’s president with board members John Pratt, Robert M. Bandy, Raymond J Delay, A. l. Jasman and Delbert Groom.

Today the Bonner County Farm Bureau is an active local supporter of the agricultural and rural community in Northern Idaho. Its mission statement reads: The Bonner County Farm Bureau is a grassroots organization that promotes agricultural enterprises, supports rural American values, defends property rights and educates our community regarding these values.

The Bureau is involved in many activities including 4-H, the Bonner County Fair, the Bonner County Farm Tour, the North Idaho Draft Horse and Mule Show, and the Ag and Forestry Committee. It is coordinating efforts to reestablish the FFA program at SHS. It has provided venues to help voters meet candidates for state and local offices. It monitors issues of impact for Bonner County farmers and ranchers and informs them of upcoming meetings and events of interest. The Bonner County Farm Bureau has been a proactive member of North Idaho for over 50 years. It will continue to serve its members and our community for the next 50 years as well.

Making the Most of a Health Savings Account by Judy Baird, AVP Branch Manager Mountain West Bank We have been seeing quite a few customers in the bank depositing refund checks now that what we typically refer to as tax season has ended.

We have also been talking with those who have learned they are not going to receive a refund but have to pay, some of whom don’t have the funds available to pay. For certain, some are trying to figure out how they don’t find themselves in a similar

situation next year.

One way we can help here at the bank is to talk about Health Savings Accounts, or an HSA. HSAs can be used either as a spending or an investment account. Many people who are familiar with an HSA use them as specialized checking accounts for health care costs such as deductibles, co-insurance and co-payments rather than as investment tools for medical expenses in retirement.

If you have an HSA and are using it for current health care costs, you have a lot of flexibility. You may fund the account as you incur medical expenses or you can wait, as you can with a tradition IRA, until April 15th of the following calendar year to fund account for the past year and take an immediate distribution.

Some investment advisors recommend investing money that will be used for current or near-term health care expenses in safe (such as an HSA) rather than risky assets such as stock markets or other investment type accounts or portfolios. Investment accounts can carry risk and the account balance may fall. When that happens, the balance in these investment type accounts may not be sufficient to cover current medical expenses. Balances in your HSA are not subject to the same type of potential loss due to market fluctuations.

The IRS does set limits as to just how much can be contributed to an HSA. In 2017, for example, someone with self-only high-deductible health plan (HDHP) coverage could contribute up to $3,400 to an HSA. With family HDHP coverage, contributions up to $6,750 were allowed. Additional catch up contribution of up to $1,000 could also be made by persons over age 55.

HSAs can be very attractive because they are tax exempt. Those with an HSA benefit from a triple tax advantage. In some instances, an employer will set up an HSA account for the employee. The employee contributions to the account are deductible from taxable income. Any interest or other capital earnings on assets in the account build up tax free, and distributions for qualified medical expenses from the HSA are excluded from taxable income to the employee.

An easy way to make personal contributions to an HSA is through payroll deductions. Many employers are willing to set up that payroll deduction for you, which allows you to save FICA taxes on the contribution, another added benefit. Those using an HSA for future health care expenses may want to consider maxing out their contributions if possible, as well as make contributions via payroll deduction to get the FICA tax break.

When selecting an HSA plan to use as an investment tool to save for future medical expenses, there are three important considerations – the range of investment options offered, how attractive are those investment options, and the total cost of investing in those options, including fund fees, maintenance fees and investment fees.

According to Fidelity Benefits Consulting, a 65-year-old couple retiring in 2016 would need an average of $260,000 (in today’s dollars) to cover medical expenses throughout retirement, not including long-term care costs such as a nursing home. Contributing to an HSA is a great supplement to retirement savings.

Fidelity Benefits Consulting also states it would be optimal, if someone can afford it, to avoid using money in his or her HSA for current medical expenses and pay out of pocket, protecting those funds on deposit in an HSA for those later years. If enough has been saved in a 401(k) to cover future health care expenses, then it may make sense to pay for current medical expenses with the HSA. If you invest your health savings account funds wisely, and spend them only on qualified medical expenses, these accounts can be a great way to supplement retirement savings.

Whether you are saving for short or long term needs, consider speaking with your financial institution or financial advisor as to how an HSA might benefit you.

DayBreak Center - A Lifeline for Families

We think when we reach retirement age we will have the time to travel, play more golf, spend more time with our families and grandchildren, study new areas of interest and reap the rewards that should come after a life of work, raising children and doing our duty in so many ways. Our spouse or our friends are ready to “play” with us and our grown children who are often busy working and/or raising children of their own are excited to see us spreading our wings in new ways, or simply relaxing and enjoying life.

And then comes a diagnosis of some type of dementia. It changes everything. A new plan needs to be put in place. A loved one needs to be constantly cared for and often a family member, the spouse or a grown child or even a grandchild, becomes the caregiver. Caregiving gradually takes over the caregiver’s life as the disease advances and there is often no energy or time left for other things, putting the caregiver at risk for depression, isolation and declining health. How can these families be helped?

DayBreak Center is your local adult daytime care center and social program for seniors and especially for people challenged with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of memory loss. We are here to provide respite and support services for the families and caregivers and to provide a safe, caring environment for the person with cognitive problems. DayBreak can be a lifeline for a family, maintaining the health and happiness of family caregivers who need time on their own to replenish their energy, to socialize with friends and bring balance to their lives. Day programs like DayBreak Center can ease the stress of caregiving, improve the relationship between the caregiver and the person cared for, and may even delay the need for placement in a nursing facility allowing a family to keep their loved one home longer.

The person with memory impairment also needs time away from their caregiver and a social outlet of their own. At DayBreak Center, our participants find new friends, fun activities, and engage in social interaction which has been shown to slow the rate of mental decline.

Comments we hear from families are that their loved one smiles for the first time that morning or begins talking when they come through our door at DayBreak and we greet them. Our participants’ basic social politeness and the manners which they grew up with seem to kick in and cause them to respond more fully and try harder than they may when home with the same family members day after day. Although our participants may not remember what they did during the day while at DayBreak, they carry the good feelings from the laughter and the fun with them, leaving them in a better mood which can last forhours or sometimes days afterwards. One granddaughter says she can tell from her grandmother’s mood if she has been to DayBreak recently.

We are very interactive at DayBreak Center. Our day may start out with coffee and conversation, perhaps sharing interesting or fun news items, then proceed to some brain challenge games or table games like cards, dominos or Yahtzee. We may fold towels or do dishes together. We play bean bag and bingo, do art projects and have music and sing-a-longs.

When the weather permits we can be found out in our enclosed patio area enjoying the fresh air and playing rubber horseshoes or ladder ball or doing a bit of gardening. All of our activities are modified as needed to fit the capabilities of our participants. We have a slate of wonderful volunteers who come in to engage with our participants and help with activities. We typically have either two staff members or one staff and one or more volunteers present when participants are with us.

DayBreak Center is a program of the Sandpoint Area Seniors, Inc. and is located next door to the Sandpoint Senior Center at 820 Main Street in Sandpoint, Idaho. We are open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m.to 5:30 p.m. A family may bring their senior to us for one hour or for all day as needed. A senior qualifies for our program if they are 55 years of age or older and meets other physical and behavioral program guidelines.

We encourage families to try us two or three times to let their loved one acclimate to us, which also gives us time to find out what approaches work best for each person. The cost for DayBreak Center is $10 an hour. The first visit of up to 3 hours is free. There is also significant financial help available both through The Area Agency on Aging and from the DayBreak Center Family Assistance Fund. Many families are on a very limited budget and we want them to know we will find a way to make it work for them financially.

We highly encourage anyone to come by, see our place, meet our staff and get a feel for what we do. Don’t think you have to do it all yourself when a loved one needs to be watched over. Why The Co-operative is So important

The CO-OP Gas & Supply Company, Inc. has been in business in north Idaho since 1934, now in our 83rd year of continuous service to the community. It is a true cooperative with a membership in excess of 700 doing in more than $10 million in business every year.

The idea of the cooperative is based on the Rochdale Principles of cooperative society. Membership is open and voluntary. It is anti-discriminatory in nature but members must be able to participate in the cooperative. There are motivations and rewards often coming in the form of a combination of financial, quality of life, career experience and giving back to the community.

The cooperative is Democratic member controlled: one member - one vote. Those members serving as elected representatives are accountable to the membership. Member economic participation is one of the defining features of a cooperative. Members contribute equitably to and democratically control the capital of their cooperative, how it is used.

Limitations on member compensation and appropriate use of surpluses.

The cooperative should produce a profit and when it does, that profit can be used as reserves, to develop the co-op through reinvestment, or by paying dividends to members based on purchases. The cooperative must be autonomous and independent to insure the democratic member control of the organization but it also must be able to cooperate with other cooperatives.

Education, training, and information. The cooperative must provide education and training to the members and to the public so that the members can effectively contribute to the development of the co-op.

Over the past 82 years the CO-OP Gas & Supply Company has operated on these principles including our connection to other co-ops such as ACE Hardware, United Hardware, and Cenex Harvest States. This has allowed the CO-OP to bring quality products and services to the membership as well as the public. The CO-OP has participated in community support of 4-H, FFA, county fairs, education including classes on agricultural subjects and food preservation as well as school gardens and farm tours.

Cooperatives are different than for-profit retail business entities. The co-op is also a social organization focused on helping the members reach a better quality of life. Co-ops are not profit focused but when they operate in a healthy way there are profits which must be used to the benefit of the membership. In profitable years dividends are paid out based on purchases.

The CO-OP Gas & Supply Company paid out $123,000 in dividends for year ending 2017. It has paid $1.3 million cash back to the community over the last 15 years. First Quarter 2018, North Idaho’s Housing Market Continues to Tighten

The North Idaho housing market continues to tighten. Currently there are just under 10% less active residential listings in the Multiple Listing Service than there were at this time last year. Despite the lack of inventory the number of homes sold increased over last year. Below is a table of the number of homes sold in the three northern counties by quarter for the last three quarters and a comparison of those sales numbers with the corresponding quarter one year earlier.

Numbers are compared for each quarter to the corresponding quarter one year earlier to remove seasonal variation inherent in the market. Kootenai County showed a small increase over the last three quarters when compared to the same three quarters the previous year with just over a 4% increase overall. Bonner County experienced a 14.6% increase while Boundary County experienced a decrease of 12.2% over the same three quarters.

Compare that with the following table where the median1 home price by quarter for the same period as above is compared to the quarterly median home sales price for the corresponding quarter one year earlier.

For the last three quarters Kootenai County median home prices have increased by 9.1% over the same period of the previous year. Bonner County experienced an 11.3% increase over the same period while Boundary County experienced a smaller increase of 3.8%.

Looking at the three northern counties of Idaho together, for the last three quarters when compared to the same three quarters the year before there was an increase in the number of homes sold by 5.2% and the median home sales price increased over $24,000 to $244,500. Together this resulted in an increase in gross residential sales of $178,000,000 or 16%.

For the three northern counties of Idaho the s¬¬¬¬upply of homes for sale is decreasing as demonstrated by the declining number of active residential listings (down nearly 10% from this time last year) from which to choose. In addition, median home sales prices are increasing faster than the national average (10% for North Idaho versus just under 6% nationally). The days on market for a house to sell decreased almost two weeks (to 76 days).

These are indicators of a real estate market that continues to strengthen significantly. For someone considering the sale of their home as we come into the beginning of a new real estate season the data would suggest that it is a good time to sell with an opportunity to obtain top dollar for your property.
