And Suddenly It Was Summer

there will be too hot days but I am ready with the iced tea, lemonade and a shady spot in the garden, which has yet to be planted. Never Does it seem to you that once the holidays are done, the rest of the fear... winter just seems to go on forever? In our family, to mitigate this time And suddenly it was summer. warp phenomenon, we extend the holidays to include Ground Hog Day, Valentines Day, the Spring Equinox, and anything else we can check off the calendar. The crazy thing is, it works.

If January is planning month, March is planting month, for early start plants that is, and ordering trees and shrubs from U of I. I do both and & it sort of jump starts spring for me. By the time the seedlings are up and need re-potted, the warmer weather has also come and the snow ids off the valley floor. We have about 7 weeks to go until the summer solstice but I am enjoying every day I can now be outside raking, cleaning, and planting.

We just finished George’s Annual Tree and Shrub sale. George would like to thank everyone who turned out. Everyone was so nice 9 am – 3:30 pm and we had a lot of fun seeing old customers and meeting new ones.

It is a little rough with not being able to get everything. But it was a Memorial Community Center good day.

Hope, Idaho Patti is bringing in bedding plants and hanging flower baskets for (Across RR tracks, near MM 46) Mother’s Day. They are due to arrive this week so be looking for them.

We still have plenty of garden seeds, potting soils, soil amendments and compost products,.

For those of you who love to squeeze production out of every square foot of the garden, we have fencing panels! These panels are not only flexible and great for arches in the garden, they can be used for vertical gardening as well. We also have poly pipe and conduit for those small, mini hoop house planting spaces. I have been using all of these growing methods and have had great success.

With the advent of warmer temperatures in our area, water conservation is always on the mind of gardeners. The CO-OP stocks all of the pipe, regulators, soaker hose, tubing and plugs to put in a DIY drip irrigation system. These systems eliminate waste and evaporation issues with over top watering, including pathogen and pest control.

Idaho Master Naturalists Kickoff Waterlife Discovery Center

The Waterlife Discovery Center, 1591 Lakeshore Dr. in Sagle, will open for the summer season with a Youth Fly Fishing Clinic and Open House on June 11, 2022.

This exciting event is hosted by the Pend Oreille Chapter of Idaho Master Naturalists and co-sponsored by North 40 Outfitters and The Fly Project, along with the Panhandle Chapter of Trout Unlimited and Idaho Fish and Game.

The Youth Flyfishing Clinic is open to boys and girls, ages 10 – 17. Registration is from 8:30am – 9:00am. After registering, the participants will be divided into groups. Each group will rotate through 5 different stations, learning about the Waterlife Discovery Center, fly tying demonstration, entomology (macro invertebrates) Identification, conservation including habitat protection and safe catch and release techniques, the last station will be actual fly casting instructions. All of the equipment will be provided. Dress appropriately for the weather and have eye protection for the casting instructions. The fee for the clinic is $10.00, nonrefundable and benefits the IDFG Aquatic Education Fund. The Clinic will end around noon, with a raffle drawing for all participants that are present.

Please come explore this amazing property, even if you aren’t involved in the Fly Fishing Clinic. The IMN or Naturalists on Duty (NODS) are available Thursday, Friday, Saturday from 10:00 am - 2:00pm. June 11 - August, 2022. Although on June 11, the WDC will be open from 8:30am until noon.

As the name indicates, this ten acre IDFG property is all about discovering what water does for all of us. The grounds now host an interpretive wetland trail, trout pond with viewing window, water experiments, nature scavenger hunt, plus picnic tables overlooking the beautiful Pend Oreille River. The former hatchery manager’s home has been remodeled into a small science center, with a Bull Trout movie, history exhibits, and hands on nature/science exhibits. The NODS are available during open hours to show you around and answer questions. The grounds are always open from dawn until dusk for a quiet walk or picnic. The hatchery itself was built in the early 20th century. The spring that feeds the hatchery however, is too cold to grow fish optimally, they grow too slowly to make it a workable hatchery. The outdoor runs were added to make the facility into a redistribution center. Trout are brought here from southern Idaho and distributed to the smaller area lakes.

Bonner County Sportsmen - Youth Camp Scholarship

Calling all 10, 11, and 12 year-olds interested in camping! The Bonner County Sportsmen would like to send two of you to the Youth Conservation Camp from August 1 - 5 this year. Held at the Trinity Pines Camp and Conference Center in Cascade, ID, you can spend the week enjoying the outdoors (campfires, rope climbing, rafting and more!), learning about conservation (tracking wildlife, recognizing habitats, etc.), earning a Hunter’s Education certificate (if you don’t already have one) and making new friends.

Transportation to and from the camp is provided, but your parents are welcome to drive you down and back if they like. The camp is run by Fish & Game personnel, and the camp fees, food, and transportation costs are covered.

We love hearing about your camping experience, and hope that you can tell us all about it at our September meeting.

Food Delivery Robots at University of Idaho By Paul Boehlke At the University of Idaho campus in Moscow, there’s a lot of buzz about these little devices cruising around campus.

“I was actually a little confused, I wasn’t really sure what they were.

I had never seen anything like this ever before,” said University of Idaho Senior Carlos Arriaga.

“It’s pretty neat, this is the first campus in Idaho to have food delivery robots,” said Andrew Tucker, Starship Technologies Site Lead.

“Definitely something that I was surprised to see but it was really cool, honestly. Especially when I found out what they actually did. I didn’t know they delivered food until I saw the big ole sticker that said, Hey, I deliver food,” said Arriaga.

“We launched on campuses in 2018 and now this is about the 25th campus in the United States. We also operate in 5 countries,” said Tucker.

The autonomous delivery robots are a product of Starship Technologies, a company started in 2014 by the founders of Skype. It’s headquartered in San Francisco, with engineering operations based in Estonia. To use it, you download the Starship App onto your smartphone, and then you can order from one of the restaurants on campus.

“When you place your order, prior to that you just tell it where you want it to meet you, so that it’s going to be outside in front of your dorm room or in front of your house if you’re here on campus housing,” said Tucker.

“Once I downloaded the app it was super easy to navigate. You just pick a location where you want the robot to go, it has a real time tracker so you can track it, and then you come outside and pick up your food. Super easy to use,” said Arriaga.

“I ordered a bagel and a coffee, yeah. I had 15 minutes in between classes so I thought it’d be a perfect opportunity to test it out and it worked perfectly.”

“Did you really need the bagel, or did you just want to see how it worked?”

“Honestly I just kinda wanted to test it out.” – Laughs – “Whether you’re in the admin building and you don’t have time to and you don’t have time to run down here and grab food, it allows you to skip the line, order ahead and have it delivered right to you,” said Kim Howe, Idaho Eats Marketing and Guest Experience at University of Idaho.

“It costs the price of a meal plus a $1.99 delivery fee, which is very reasonable compared to other delivery fees out there. And it integrates into our meal plan so all students on a meal plan if they have Dining Dollars, their Dining Dollars cover everything including the cost of the meal and including that $1.99 delivery fee. So, it’s amazing, it’s a great value add for students on a meal plan and faculty and staff members on a meal plan. It gives them that extra convenience,” said Howe.

And if you’re not on a meal plan you can just use a regular credit card.The robot cruises along at up to 4 mph, and can hold about 20 pounds in its delivery compartment, which is cleaned before and after each delivery.

“It has a full sweet of accessories, so you can put a pizza box in there if you have to. And then you can have to six drinks in there and you can still fit a whole bunch of stuff in there,” said Tucker.

“At the front there’s a whole bunch of cameras and other sensors, there’s onsite stuff that keep it from running into nearby obstacles, but then it’s running on a map that it gets from an A.I. so it actually gets plotted by a computer that when an order comes in like say you place your order, the A.I. makes a path for it and that’s optimized per trip so it just starts working on better paths and better times to get to you so it speeds up over time because it’s learning about that,” said Tucker.

It can even cross streets, waiting for cars to pass first.

“We’ve done about 140,000 robot crossing a day worldwide,” said Tucker.

You’re notified when it’s about to arrive so can you go outside to meet it.

The lid is locked during transport, and can only be opened using the app.

“Basically you just say I’m done with the robot, you swipe and it goes away, and it just starts on it’s next job, usually waiting for another order,” said Tucker.”

The robots have speakers, so they can communicate with humans they meet.It can be programed with custom greetings, and even play music.If it encounters any problems, a human operator can take it over by remote-control.They’re currently running 15 or 20 of them on the campus.

“Not only is our current student population super stoked about it, but the incoming students are learning about it, and they can’t believe they get to go to a university that has robots delivering their food,” said Howe.

Weed of the Month: Yellow Flag Iris

Those four days beginning with the last weekend of March and persisting through the first couple of days that week was a welcome burst of spring weather. With temperatures in the 60s and enough sun filtering through the scattered cloud deck, my pasty winter skin gave way to the initial summer base layer. It was also enough to jumpstart the development of some winter annual weeds; Cheatgrass, Shepherd’s Purse and Redstem Filaree were a few that I saw. Clearly that was fool’s spring and we then catapulted into second (maybe third) winter.

It’s mid-April as I’m writing this and it has been cold, windy and intermittently stormy since the end of that early incalescence, and the extended forecast shows cold temperatures (including sub-freezing at night) for as far as the projection goes out. Hopefully by the time this is published in early May we are in actual spring. If soil temperatures are not at the ideal level by the time you have this paper in your hand, then we are probably screwed. That was a joke, but in seriousness, we shouldn’t be far off from adequate soil temperature if not there yet.

When the soil warms up, plant activity increases, which maximizes consistent efficacy of herbicide treatments on weeds, especially perennials. May and June are generally the best months to treat a plethora of the commonly battled offenders in Bonner County.

This weed of the month is a less commonly battled offender, and one to keep an eye out for; Yellow Flag Iris (Iris Pseudacorus). It’s an exotic Iris introduced from Europe as an ornamental and inhabits aquatic margins; around ponds, along irrigation ditches and on the banks of lakes and rivers. It is on the Idaho Noxious Weed List, and we have it categorized as EDRR (early detection, rapid response) in Bonner County. It forms clumps growing 3-4 feet in height, and the leaves are sword-like with blooms that show off a brilliant yellow. Reproduction is similar to many other perennials; vegetative and by seed. The rhizomes are thick and the seeds are quite large—these parts are designed to float on water, which is the primary vector of spread. The seed capsules grow to about 3 inches in length, and the seeds themselves resemble cloves of garlic.

The impacts can be significant if Yellow Flag Iris takes a stronghold.

It displaces native shoreline vegetation, alters soils and can disrupt water flow, which all lead to the degradation and/or destruction of important wildlife and fish habitat. It’s also poisonous to animals (and humans) if enough of the foliage or rhizomes are consumed.

We’re close to the upper limit on the invasion curve regarding EDRR status with Yellow Flag Iris in Bonner County, but my observations indicate that it’s not spreading lightning fast like other noxious weeds and invasive vegetation tend to, so I feel comfortable enough keeping it in the EDRR category and continuing to pursue eradication (similar to the large Knotweed complex). I need assistance from the public, though. It flowers from about late May until mid-June in our area, which is the perfect time to spot the infestations. Keep an eye on the area’s lake and river shores, retention ponds, landscape ponds and riparian wetlands. Since the showy flowers display an appealing look, it is often dug up and transplanted when discovered during the flowering period, which is an unfortunate common spreading mechanism.

There are other species of Iris that are native or benign, and they are all smaller than Yellow Flag, but otherwise look very similar. Most non-invasive Irises have purple or pink flowers. Siberian Iris is the primary non-invasive yellow flowered specimen—it grows to heights of 2 feet or less and the flowers are generally a more pale shade of yellow compared to its invasive rival. These other Irises can also be found away from water, but I have yet to see a Yellow Flag Iris more than a couple of feet away from the water’s edge.

If you have or find an infestation of Yellow Flag Iris, report it to my department and we can get it treated under the EDRR program upon identification confirmation.

As for resources to assist with the more widespread noxious weeds, i.e. – Spotted Knapweed, Oxeye Daisy, Canada Thistle, Orange/Yellow Hawkweeds, etc., we have the Neighborhood Cooperative Cost Share available to provide private property owners with some reimbursement for the cost of herbicides to control them. The pre-application deadline is May 31, and the forms are available on our website. You can pick up hard copies at our office if you do not have printing capabilities. Since quality herbicide application equipment is somewhat of a niche market, we offer power sprayers for rent to the public that are designed for making efficient applications to fields, pastures and roadsides/driveways. Info sheets on these sprayers are also available on our website. Additionally, we try to keep the CO-OP stocked with our program forms and informational flyers, and they usually usually place them in the herbicide aisle. Let’s get a successful season underway.

Eat Your Weeds! Spotlight on Dandelions By Suzanne Tabert

Dandelions are everywhere, and we are thankful for that. Weeds tend to show up where they are most needed, yet we don’t always recognize their generosity. Case in point are dandelions. Dandelions grow in the cities, country, in every crack in the sidewalks and roadways in between. They show up in our lawns, gardens, and come knocking at our front doors.

Someone once told me that if you can’t beat ‘em, eat ‘em! Better than trying to beat dandelions, cultivate a love for them. Eat your weeds.

They bring so much medicine and nutrition to the table.

Family Ties Dandelions are in the large and widespread Asteraceae family, which contains sunflowers, chicory, salsify, yarrow, tansy, chamomile, desert sagebrush, thistles, elecampane, echinacea, and daisies to name only a few. I’d love to go to that family reunion!

Dandelion Botany While dandelions can self-pollinate, they seem to prefer the company of others. Digging up a thick dandelion root can reveal a number of plants whose seeds germinated close to each other and joined at the root to become bigger and stronger by mingling DNA. Dandelions are low growing perennials with a taproot that can grow to an inch thick over time. If some of the root is left in the ground when digging it out, the dandelion will handily grow back. The root’s main purpose, besides conducting water and minerals to the arial parts of the plants, is to store nutrients for early spring growth. Oblong to spoon shaped leaves range from mildly to deeply toothed, usually 5 to 15 inches long. The leaves are hairless.The stems, leaves, and roots will produce white latex when broken. Latex is part of the dandelion’s defense system. As the latex is extremely bitter, herbivores - including insects - are hesitant to devour dandelions after a quick bite or two.

Incidentally, the latex in dandelions is different in chemical makeup than the rubber tree latex. It’s unlikely that those who have a latex allergy would be allergic to dandelions.

Take note: false dandelion, Hypochoeris radicata, has tall branching stems with flowers at the end of each branch and fuzzy leaves. This is not true dandelion and does not have the same medicinal value as our true dandelion. Dandelions thrive in soil rich in potassium and nitrogen. Their presence is a good indicator for growing other plants that need these nutrients. Dandelion roots can travel through the hardest packed clay and create more fertile soil by its ability to pull up nutrients from deep in the earth, collecting them in the leaves, which die back in the fall and deposit the minerals and organic matter to the topsoil.

The decaying roots create tunnels which bring in earthworms and beneficial microbes along with aerating the soil to allow for rain to better penetrate.

Dandelions are one of the best plant helpers to have in the garden!

Dandelions are an early spring first-food for emerging bees that are hungry and in need of food for themselves and their hive mates. We become stewards of our bee friend pollinators when we allow dandelions to thrive.

The Medicine of Dandelions Dandelion is a digestive bitter. It heals, nourishes, and balances the entire digestive tract, including the liver. Our entire digestive system comprises our mouth, esophagus, stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, large and small intestines, and colon. The small intestine is where 80% of the body’s relaxing neurotransmitters are created, and 70% of immune activity occurs. By strengthening and nourishing the digestive tract, including the small intestine, dandelion helps a body have healthier nerve function and better immunity. Dandelion tones and nourishes the spleen, skin, nerves, kidneys, glands, urinary, circulatory, lymph, and gallbladder. Dandelions can aid in reduction of uric acid and reducing edema in the joints. Dandelions can be a good herbal aid for treating inflammatory diseases such as chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia.

Dandelion stimulates appetite and elimination of both gases and solids, which is helpful to those with mobility issues. That’s a lot of healing and nutrition from a plant that most people try to eradicate from their yard and garden.

Pack River Cemetery Association

The Pack River Cemetery Association annual meeting and clean-up day will be Sunday May 22. The clean-up will start about 1 p.m. with the annual meeting to follow.

We ask that objects (solar lights, planters, vases etc.) you want to keep on the graves of loved ones be picked up by May 1. This allows the clean-up people and the mower to do the necessary job around the graves, headstones, and markers. They may be replaced after the clean-up day.

Flags will be placed on veteran’s graves before Memorial Day. All are welcome to participate in both the clean-upand the meeting. Thank you.

Getting the Medicine of Dandelions to Friends and Family One of my mottos is “get the medicine to the people in ways they’ll enjoy taking, so that healing can occur.” How do we get dandelion medicine to our people? In tasty foods, of course! The following recipe is one of my favorites and is a real crowd pleaser.

Dandelion Greens Pesto!

• 4 cups dandelion leaves • 2/3 – 1 cup extra virgin olive oil • 1 cup nuts of choice – optional • 2 – 6 cloves garlic to taste • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese or nutritional yeast Put all ingredients in a food processor and process on high until creamy, making sure all the ingredients are completely incorporated.

Bring it to your next potluck; you’ll be super impressive and your social anxiety will disappear. It’s that good! The pesto can be frozen in little freezer bags or plastic containers, and even in ice cube trays for up to 6 months. Just put the cubes in freezer containers after freezing in the trays for best storage. Spread dandelion pesto onto crackers and baked potatoes, use as a chip dip. How about pesto sandwiches with added fixings? The options are as endless as your imagination. I know for a fact that pesto on freshly caught and cooked fish from Lake Pend Orielle is amazing! And how about a dab on fried eggs? It’s thrilling, my friends, thrilling.

BCGA Plant Sale and Garden Tour Slated By Ann Warwick

Mother’s Day weekend is the unofficial beginning of gardening season here, and The Bonner County Gardeners Association presents its annual spring plant sale on Friday, May 6, from 9am to 5pm, and Saturday, May 7, 9am to 2pm in the parking lot at the Ponderay Event Center. Come out and shop for vegetable starts, including interesting varieties of tomatoes and peppers, herbs, berry plants, and other garden favorites. Also available are many perennial ornamental plants from members’ gardens and garden related gifts to dazzle the eye and please anyone, including mothers. BCGA members will be on hand to answer garden questions or help with plant choices.

Saturday, July 9 is the date for the popular garden tour this year. This is a rare opportunity to view outstanding gardens and gain new ideas to take home and apply to your own landscape. Earth Friendly Gardening We think of gardening as an earth friendly activity, and in many ways, it is. However, we can all improve our methods to increase environment saving habits and to decrease harmful practices. Here are a few tips to help our beautiful and productive eco-systems.

Plastics: It is difficult to escape the presence of plastics in the environment, but we can start by reusing plastic containers for plants.

Nursery pots can be reused year after year, and are sought after by dedicated gardeners. If you don’t use them again, please donate them to someone who will. Farmers market vendors welcome them, and so do those gardeners who start their own seeds. Also, plastic food containers can be repurposed into garden pots simply by cleaning them and punching drainage holes in the bottom. Plastic containers can also be cut into strips to use as plant labels. Plastic bags are useful to harvest and store produce from the garden.

Water saving: There are many ways to garden with less water.

Mulches provide cover for the soil and reduce evaporation, as well as maintaining more constant temperatures at root level, a boon to plants. Mulching prevents weeds from taking hold, too, which means you have less work to do. Avoid overhead watering whenever possible. It is much more efficient to deliver water to the plant rather than to the entire area by using drip systems or soaker hoses. Mulch mow the lawn; this will help hold water in the roots, decreasing the need for frequent watering. Water in the early morning or evening to avoid excess evaporation during the heat of the day. Group thirsty plants together when possible and give the more drought resistant ones their own space.

Pesticides: Try to avoid using them. Insect or slug problems can often be solved by hand removal, or by physical barriers that prevent the insects from harming crops. For example floating row covers protect against flying insects laying eggs on valuable plants. If one uses broad spectrum insecticides, one is killing not only the undesired insects, but also pollinators and other beneficial insects. Be kind to our tiny animals; we are experiencing a devastating insect die off, which affects all of life. Birds and bats depend on them for food, and they play a huge role in maintaining our ecosystems and life itself. Try not to use herbicides, as well. They are poison. Be willing to tolerate a few weeds, or use hand methods to get rid of them.

Start a compost pile or worm bin. Stop using the garbage disposal.

Our sewage systems don’t need those nutrients ending up in water ways, and food waste is valuable recycled into plant food. This reduces the need for fertilizers and other additives and adds immensely to soil health. Put garden debris into compost bins or heaps, too. Your garden will welcome the decomposed materials, and you’ll save trips to the dump and reduce the amount of trash.

If we all work together on being earth friendly, it will make a difference.

Horse Goals- Refining the Rider’s Perspective

I often get asked for help with problem horses or equine enthusiasts struggling to accomplish specific goals. It is easy to focus on what appears like the horse not listening. Without a basic quality foundation in human and horse education, goals will seem unattainable with resistance from the equine.

Here are examples of common horse complaints resulting from holes in the horsemanship: If a rider is trying to get the correct canter lead but not noticing if they can first direct the horse’s thought to focus on the direction they are traveling. Is there the ability to move the horse’s shoulders, ribcage, and hindquarters separately and influence his energy and the size of step within the slower gaits?

As a rider is attempting to conquer riding past a scary area, they often add more leg and seat pressure to “drive” the horse physically through the concerning place, hoping he does not physically explode afterward. His initial reasonable indicators expressing fear and concern displayed as drifting movement (reflecting fleeting thoughts) or changes in breathing as tension increases, need to be acknowledged without critique. Refining the horse’s ability to mentally let go of anticipation while still far away from the problem area, then working physically through his concern, can help him learn how to offer to try.

Struggling with the horse’s halt while riding, but not noticing that while he is led, tied, groomed, tacked, or mounted, there is constant excessive movement. The equine’s body reflects his mind and emotions. The halt is not the problem, but rather why the horse is always fleeing from human interaction? If he has never felt secure to mentally halt and physically let down when handled from the ground, his chaotic movement will increase when under saddle. The halt is an overlooked and undervalued “tool,” often superficially seen as a physically obedient act rather than recognized as a time for the horse to mentally process and acknowledge the human’s communication.

Having “riding out goals” but not associating the subtle drifting movement or inconsistency in the horse’s steps, his unwillingness to adapt, fussiness with the bit, or his exaggerated body movement, that all reflect his insecurity about leaving the herd or barn. If the rider does not have pre-established clear and effective communication to offer supportive interaction, the horse is constantly searching for how to get back to a “safe” place. The herd-boundness is not the issue, but a symptom.

The following are suggestions to prepare yourself and the horse for future situations.

First, consider a scenario and how you could break it down and present it in small, specific segments. Continually vague communication to the horse, combined with unclear intention, creates current and future resistance leading to unwanted behaviors.

Next, assess how your horse responds to your communication. Is he defensive towards pressure, mentally avoidant of your requests, physically carrying a brace, or heavy? If yes, then you have no way to communicate effectively. If resistant or unwilling, such as offering minimal response after being asked multiple times, the initial goal

needs to be set aside and the basics revisited and refined.

Many riders struggle with setting aside ego-based unrealistic “but I want to” goal fixations. They need to prioritize focusing on improving their abilities before complaining about the horse.

Human assumptions can also be detrimental to the equine partnership. Despite past training, the animal frequently only learned to obediently tolerate the human but rarely is mentally directable, adaptable, or physically soft in his responses. Most unnatural scenarios humans put the horse in leave him floundering. “Hopeful” riders want the animal to “figure it out” without offering guidance or addressing his feedback. The horse is then critiqued for how he reacted to a situation, which teaches him to be distrustful of the human.

A horse’s behavior is an honest reflection of his mental and emotional state. Ego-based explanations of equines being, “stubborn, resistant, psyching the rider out, or having an ulterior motive,” are non-equine characteristics. The only thing the horse has is trying to do is survive.

Riders need to learn to follow through and acknowledge the horse’s “checklist” or things he offers. It is crucial to recognize, believe, and address the horse’s concern without critique or taking it as a personal insult. Establishing fair, consistent boundaries and presenting clear, specific communication without making the horse defensive is a must.

A horse “fleeing” throughout the session will have limited ability to try as his mind is elsewhere, and the interaction will feel like a fight. Adding gadgets, stronger bits, more equipment, or mindless patterned repetition often forces the already fearful or concerned horse to offer more unwanted responses. The experience leaves both the rider and the horse tentative and defensive.

There are no shortcuts to creating quality, trust-based relationships.

Horsemanship is a skill that requires practice and ongoing refinement.

The ideal connection many riders want with their horse begins with awareness, effort, and intention on the human’s end. Creating confidence-building interactions leads to an increased togetherness between the horse and rider and transitions into piecing together quality segments to accomplish quality equine-related goals .

COVID-10 V Immunity – Against What?

infection versus disease. As antibodies are easier measured than T-cells, they began to represent COVID-19 immunity. Simply put, antibodies circulating outside of cells prevent infection and T cells prevent disease (severity and death) within cells. The first line of defense consists of the innate immune system in the lymphatic system, which meets invaders directly and stimulates T cells to activate the adaptive immune system. The latter consists of the humoral branch, which produces plasma B cells (producing antibodies), and memory B cells (producing more plasma cells) for long term infection protection by neutralizing pathogens; and the cellular immune system, which destroys infected cells via specific memory T-cells, preventing severe disease. In fact, in a study of 1304 reinfections there were 90% lower odds of hospitalization or death than primary infections (3). Protection against severe COVID-19 remained high at around 88% even against Omicron (5).

In comparison, vaccine effectiveness against severity of disease with two doses declined from 89% to 64% by 4 months in one study (1) while another showed 90% efficacy up to 6 months even in those over 65 (6). So even if antibody production declines, protection against severe disease stays high with both natural as well as vaccine induced immunity due to this adaptive T-cell immune response.So hopefully realizing by now, that health science is not a static but rather dynamic process that needs to be reflected honestly in public and private communication, we can examine once more our tendency towards immunity against having our opinions challenged. Since public health messaging is tightly linked with political campaign messaging, depending on what political silo you tend to reside in, the epidemic restrictions either seemed overblown, or there is a deep frustration with others not following the sciences.

John Wood Jr in a 3.27.22 Braver Angels communication said “we can argue with the validity of each other’s claims. But the validity of our experiences, whether or not they arise in part at least out of misinterpretations, must be addressed with a humility that recognizes that the bias, that affects the human condition, is not merely an affliction of my opponent but is something I am vulnerable to as well…Each of us is a product of our experiences. Understanding them helps us see that which makes the other human.”

As most of us spend so much time in our own echo chambers, we tend to react to competing beliefs with disgust and repulsion. Monica Guzman suggests to ask “what am I missing?” with such disgusted reactivity as a first step against cognitive closure that comes too early and contributes to divisiveness. “Respecting people…means respecting that the process by which they change, grow, and transform is a mystery as deep as people themselves.” (p140). You can tell I am enamored by her explorations to bridge divides. If this piques your interest, please do check out her book. You too don’t have to tie yourself into a pretzel just in order to be with somebody who is of opposing opinion about vaccination.

A few years back, in a remote NW-corner of Nepal, I heard a young woman repeatedly crying at night because of pain. Upon inquiry it seemed like she was suffering from gallstones and I sent her to the small medical clinic as my hydrocodone just made her throw up. As she got no help there, she walked off to find a traditional Tibetan healer.

What still stays with me is the helplessness and horror I felt with not being able to help someone in severe pain. Imagining this happening to me without any resources was horrifying. Ready availability of medical treatments makes us seemingly immune against disease and death.The belief that we can be immune against uncertainty is closely related. Monica Guzman explains in her new book “I Never Thought of it That Way”, that when we are facing some unknown that seems threatening – like an epidemic – we “want to run away, fortify, or even attack” (p. 54). Such a drastic move in face of something unknown requires one to fill in those gaps in one’s perception to reach “cognitive closure”, the “desire to a firm answer to a question and an aversion toward ambiguity.”

This is what happened in different ways during the early days of the COVID-19 epidemic. Depending on one’s beliefs, shaped by life experiences based on conditioned perceptions and by mass communication influenced by politics, people became very adamant about being either against or for vaccinations. There was no room for uncertainty.

The problem with that during an epidemic is that science is not equipped to come up with firm answers about an unknown ever-changing virus and public health officials don’t do well with changing targets in providing consistent messaging. Politized mass media communication is not easily overcome with any nuanced communication about ambiguity, as Richard Tofel says in a 3.17.22 NPR On Point program.

Nevertheless, he concluded his assessment of the epidemic with saying that “the conventional wisdom of avoiding ambiguity and uncertainty (in public messaging) is wrong.” At the beginning of the epidemic the CDC strongly encouraged vaccination with the assertion that it will keep the epidemic in check, despite unknown vaccine infection protection and emerging evidence of natural immunity. This caused not only confusion and lack of trust in the government, but also further polarization.

Here is a good example how this plays out in reality. One of my sisters, a child psychotherapist in Germany, is acutely aware of the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on children, not only suffering from prolonged online learning and constant isolation, but also from being hackled for wearing masks, in an attempt to protect vulnerable grandparents or immune compromised family members. Based on the government’s promoted belief that vaccinations would bring the epidemic under control quicker, she argues that if all adults and older children had been vaccinated, restrictions would have been able to be lifted way earlier.

A friend of mine, vulnerable because of chemo therapy and relying on the same premise, publicly asked for people to get vaccinated, appealing to basic kindness to protect her and others in similarly Continued on page 15 vulnerable situations. Assuming that vaccinated people are safe to be around, and unvaccinated folks, regardless of post infection status, are not, it just seemed like the TIME FO right thing to do to put one’s own preferences aside OF R T in order to protect all.The problem with this is that the P N E U premise of vaccinations providing long lasting protecA O tion against infection is one of those “cognitive closures” used to provide certainty in a state of fear and anger. The question then becomes, can we challenge our immunity against having our opinions questioned?

The CDC (January 28th MMWR 1.28.22) revised their stand in revealing that newer large studies show that people who survived a previous infection have lower rates of COVID-19 than people who were vaccinated alone. They also showed that a combo of vaccination and natural infection provides the best protection. A A PAP TEST TAKES 5 MINUTES Lancet article showed a reduction of vaccine protection from infection from an average of 92% in the first to 47% by the fourth month to 23% from 7 months on (1). Increasing natural immunity against infection, which was known to have lasted around a year before Omicron – has now been confirmed in several studies (2, 3). Mr. Tofel asserted that, in the future, the government needs to level with the public about the truth, accept that information keeps changing, and be comfortable with more “I don’t know”.

Weaving a Family Legacy

Special occasions in years past were often celebrated at Hurschell’s Lighthouse in Hope, built by Hurschell Weaver. The October 18, 1945 edition of the Sandpoint News-Bulletin described it as one of the show places of the Inland Empire, announcing that it would soon be open to the public after months of construction. The paper reported that “without question the dining room has the most pretentious display of photo murals of any place in the Inland Empire. The 23 photo murals range in size from 42 by 42 inches up to 42 by 132 inches. The photographs are the work of Ross Hall and represent some of his finest pictures taken during the past 15 years.”

For years It was the go-to dining experience for those of us who lived here as well as for epicureans from near and far. In addition to excellent cuisine, its capacity accommodated large events including annual end-of-season football and basketball awards banquets.

Today, it is not uncommon for new businesses to open with claims that they are “the first in Sandpoint.” It is highly unlikely that many of these claims are accurate – unless they were made by businesses opened prior to perhaps 1950. It is also not uncommon for accolades to be given to the entrepreneurs without taking into consideration the contributions their parents or grandparents may have made that laid the foundation for their own endeavor.

Let’s look for a moment at Hurschell Weaver’s background. His father was not a restauranteur but he was a prominent early businessman. From newspaper articles including obituaries of Weaver family members, we can piece together the part the Weaver family played in Sandpoint’s history.

Cornelius S. Weaver, born in Sweden in 1860, married in 1883, created large commercial gardens in Indiana before moving his family to Sandpoint in 1907. The Weavers established a residence at 1223 Cedar and lived there for the remainder of their lives. They operated the first greenhouse in the area. In the April 7th, 2022 100-years-agotoday column in the Bonner County Daily Bee, there was news about spring planting having started at the Weaver Nursery on Cedar Street.

Weaver was a familiar early-day figure, selling his garden produce to stores as well as on a house-to-house route in the city. His business prospered and eventually he grew flowers exclusively. His son James operated the business for a number of years before it was sold to Eric Sundgren, who named the business The Sandpoint House of Flowers (later owned and operated by Ozzie Vallieres). Cornelius Weaver died December 1, 1952 at home at the age 92. Emma Jane Weaver, Cornelius’ widow, died December 27th at age 85, less than a month later at the family home. Survivors to both were listed as two sons, James and Hurschell, and four daughters, Helen Fitzgerald, Beatrice Kent, Vernighta Gore, and Gwen Garnett.

Hurschell Weaver, their second son, was born Dec. 13, 1899 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He married Esther Fitch in 1926, at Libby, Montana.

Following WWII, he built and operated Hurschell’s Litehouse at Hope.

He had also served as chef and manager at Sandpoint Elks Club, the Kaniksu Dining Room, the Athletic Round Table in Coeur d’Alene and the Stockyard Inn, Spokane. Esther was a junior high school English teacher, 60-year resident of Bonner County, and owner with her husband of Hurschell’s Lighthouse in Hope.

Hurschell died Dec. 10, 1969 at his home on Michigan Street in Sandpoint at age 80. He was survived by his wife, two sons, Albert and Monte, and three daughters, Betty Lou Greve, Barbara Klappenbach and Calverna Stokes. Esther died at 93 on Jan. 16, 1982 at Eugene, Oregon.

In 1958, Hurschell’s Lighthouse was sold to Ed and Lorena Hawkins.

Ed had been a chef in Spokane and had developed a blue cheese dressing for the owner of one of the restaurants he served. It was such a hit that people began bringing containers with them to dinner to purchase dressing to take home. Ed brought that recipe to Hurschell’s and developed others. At some point the spelling changed to ‘Litehouse.’ The next generation of Hawkins took the business to new heights and Litehouse products are now sold internationally.

Where once we regular Bonner County folks as well as the rich and famous dined, where sports banquets and wedding receptions were held, the iconic building remains on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille.

The Hawkins families maintain it for special occasions involving their family members. Still, there is not one of us who can drive by and upon seeing that structure, help but have recollections of events attended there. Thank you, Hurschell Weaver, for your vision, where good times are still remembered 75 years later!

It seems that everyone I know is either pickling or fermenting something, anything, from carrots and cabbage to grains and even potatoes. The prevailing belief is that fermented foods, including sourdough bread, is better for the stomach and gut health. After being exposed to numerous lunches and dinners with fermentation fans, I know two things: I do not like fermented foods. But my stomach and gut do.

A few years ago I had the unequaled pleasure of attending the Sandpoint Renaissance Faire. This event was so much fun! From the time I walked onto the grounds through the jousting event, I felt I had a front row seat to what it must have been like back in the day. But I have to admit the pickle –on-a-stick guy had me baffled. From what I could see he was doing a booming business and while I do like a good dilly, it just seemed so strange to me that this would be part of the daily cuisine.

But it turns out that the crunchy, sloppy, juicy veggie has indeed been around for more than 5,000 years. So it very likely did appear to tempt the taste buds of the crowd at the joust in years gone by.

As early as 2500 B.C. the preservation of foods in salted brines and vinegars was quite common in early Mesopotamia. Cucumbers native to India were being pickled in the Tigris Valley as early as 2030 B. C. and are even credited with keeping sailors scurvy free on long voyages.

For Jews living in Eastern Europe, pickles became an especially important addition to their diet. It’s sharp, acid flavor helped to spice the bland bread and potato diets that were common in countries with long winters. However, Kosher dills weren’t the only food pickled in Poland, the Ukraine, and Russia. No, it was also common to pickle beets and shredded cabbage as well. These pickled vegetables were allowed to ferment for about a month and then they were sealed in barrels and moved to dark cellars. Pickling them in this manner allowed the pickled vegetable to last throughout the entire winter.* In addition to cucumbers, beets, garlic, green beans, carrots, and cabbage are often pickled. While fermenting foods in crocks remains popular, jars are used more often these days. The process is much faster and less messy, made possible with the invention of canning jars in 1858 thanks to Mr. John Mason of Philadelphia.

Fermented foods in general are enjoying a trend in popularity as many in the health industry have determined them good for gut health.

Fermented foods can be anything from bananas to cabbage. It really is up to the individual and has become even easier with the availability of pickling jars designed to release the oxygen from the jar contents over time instead of exposing the jars to pressure or water bath canning.

Today, for those who need yet another reason to party, we have International Pickle Week, celebrated on or about Memorial Day weekend each year here in America. As for National Pickle Day, November 14 has been assigned to it. And all you need to do to celebrate is enjoy your favorite pickle, especially if that pickle is on a stick
