Spring Will Soon Be Here With So Much to Do and See

This last winter I had the opportunity to take two trips, both to warmer climates than the northwest. For the first time in my life, I experienced Christmas without snow - in warm Tehachapi, California. I would not have imagined that the pull of new grandchildren could have been enough to make me venture away from my beloved snowy home to experience the holiday anew. But the draw is powerful and our family had a wonderful week together. To walk out into 65 degrees and green grass the day before Christmas was truly different for me.

In the first week of February we went to Raleigh, North Carolina, then into Charlotte Court House , Virginia for another time of family celebration. While the weather was a bit chilly through the early part of the week, we awoke Sunday to a warm rain, indicative of the humidity to come this spring for them.

The air was heavier than I am used to but the scent of fresh rain, untilled earth and a slight breeze had me in spring mode in no time. Still, I was happy to return home to much cooler temperatures and new snowfall.

When we think of spring it brings to mind both work and play. The work of sowing seed and caring for fields permeates our imagination. What new forage should we try for that piece of ground, or what new heirloom garden seed should be next? Does the irrigation pump need to be replaced or can we get one more year out of it? Is that favorite hiking trail open yet? Or do we just need to stay focused on getting the house painted before venturing out on a camping trip? So much to think about!

In this issue of the CO-OP Round Up we are calling attention to quite a bit of activity throughout north Idaho and Western Montana.

Here at the CO-OP we have our Annual Meeting of the Membership as well as Country Spirit Day in the store. Find more information about this event on page 15 & 16 of this publication. We will have Daisy the Cow here for the fist time in the Kid Zone! Daisy is a mechanical cow by which children, and adults if you are so inclined, can experience milking a cow. Pend Oreille Chapter of Idaho Master Naturalists

Serving

The mission of the Idaho Master Naturalist Program is to develop a group of wellinformed volunteers to actively work toward the stewardship of Idaho’s natural environment. At the state level the program is sponsored by Idaho Fish & Game, as well as our local chapter. Our local chapter is known as the Pend Oreille Chapter.

There are 11 chapters in the state, and at least 1 more forming in CdA. This chapter helps oversee the Waterlife Discovery Center in Sagle. With a grant from Idaho Fish and Wildlife Foundation, the Master Naturalist group restored the inside of the 1908 caretaker’s home. The inside is now a science center with microscopes, and hands on exhibits for children and adults. There is a replica of what the house may have looked like, with 3 items that were not from that era to find. There are so many things to see and do that some people end up staying for hours. The caretaker’s home is staffed in the summer for part of the week with Master Naturalists to help, answer questions and show people the grounds. There are interpretive trails, picnic tables, a pond with fish viewing window and much more. Even if the caretaker’s house isn’t open, it is a beautiful, peaceful place to spend some time.

Besides volunteering at the WDC, members have put in hundreds of hours volunteering with various local groups or Fish & Game projects.

Pack River Delta Restoration, Clark Fork Delta Restoration, trail surveys, school field trips and Kokanee Spawning are just a few. Activities don’t have to be physical. There is a huge array of opportunities.

To become an IMN you take 40 hours of instruction on interesting subjects like scientific journaling, entomology, tree and plant identification, fisheries, mammals and geology to name a few.

To certify you must also have 40 hours of volunteering in the first year. To remain certified each year the members must have 40 volunteer hours, plus 9 continuing education hours. Many of our members retake a class or 2 for part of their education hours.

A new class is starting on March 23. We welcome anyone who wants to learn new things about Idaho’s natural environment and meet people with similar interests to join.

The Mental Connection We Wish For May Not Be What We Had Hoped

Would you allow a neurosurgeon to implant a chip in your brain? What if it meant you could then merge thoughts with a loved one who cannot speak?

What if neuro implants could track the thoughts of violent criminals? Or what if it meant that you would no longer need a computer to access the world wide web? What if it meant that a comatose patient could communicate with his doctor? Far fetched? By now, we all know the answer is “no”.

At some point in our lives we have all wished we could share our thoughts with someone without actually speaking the words. For the common person this remains just a wish. But for a couple of scientists in 2013 at the University of Washington it is no longer science fiction, but rather, demonstrable science. Two human brains, in separate rooms, connected via the internet were able to communicate ideas which then bore out as demonstrable physical responses. The concept of a brain-net and what that system could both achieve, and destroy, has become a platform from which some critics beg for caution.

Dr. Miguel Nicolelis, Professor of Neuroscience at Duke University (among other titles) points out in WSJs The Future of Everything that “technology will not solve all of our problems.” ** The idea that connecting human brains, something Professor Nicolelis believes is “exquisite and unique”, in order to solve our issues sounds exciting. But his concern is that if we as a culture accept this, accept that Artificial Intelligence or our brain marriage to it is somehow better at problem solving than we are, we will lose something. Our identity, the things that set us apart such as creation of art or political decision making, must be done without the aid of AI. According to Dr. Nicolelis the continued exposure of the brain to computers has created a dependency on the machine. It turns out that the flexibility of the brain allows it to connect to a computer easily. And when the brain realizes it has endless information available, it tends to forget information even to the extent of phone numbers and addresses. As soon as the reliance on machines is manifested, so grows the inability to do a task without computer assistance. This condition is referred to as “automation addiction” and it is scary. The condition has even resulted in increased accidents and deaths.

In just two short weeks it will be time to put on something green, go to your favorite pub for some green beer. Then it will be time to go on the hunt for a leprechaun and a pot o’ gold. Should you choose to go leprechan hunting, here is some information on what you can expect: A leprechaun is a type of fairy of the Aos Sí in Irish folklore. They are usually depicted as little bearded men, wearing a coat and hat, who partake in mischief. They are solitary creatures who spend their time making and mending shoes and have a hidden pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. If captured by a human, they often grant three wishes in exchange for their freedom. Like other Irish fairies, leprechauns may be derived from the Tuatha Dé Danann. Leprechaun-like creatures rarely appear in Irish mythology and only became prominent in later folklore. ** While they are most likely to be found in Ireland, it is less determined that any exist in Idaho or western Montana. Still, a scenic tromp through the forest in March is very good exercise in any event.

On April 1, 2018 many denominations of the Christian Church the world over will celebrate the religious holiday of Easter, the commemoration of the Resurrection of Christ. While this holiday, or set aside day, is most often celebrated with a faith based service in a church, it has also become widely celebrated as merely a spring festival incorporating chocolate candy, egg laying rabbits, and spring fashion options for the entire family. Just look at the next flyer from your local department store.

How did culture get from celebrating a new spiritual life, to marking the day with baby chicks, bunnies, and egg rolling contests?

According to the University of Florida’s Center for Children’s Literature and Culture, the origin of the celebration - and the origin of the Easter Bunny can be traced back to 13th-century, pre-Christian Germany, when people worshiped several gods and goddesses.

The Teutonic deity Eostra was the goddess of spring and fertility, and feasts were held in her honor on the Vernal Equinox. Her symbol was the rabbit because of the animal’s high reproduction rate.

Spring also symbolized new life and rebirth; eggs were an ancient symbol of fertility. According to History.com, Easter eggs represent Jesus’ resurrection. However, this association came much later when Roman Catholicism became the dominant religion in Germany in the 15th century and merged with already ingrained pagan beliefs.

The first Easter Bunny legend was documented in the 1500s. By 1680, the first story about a rabbit laying eggs and hiding them in a garden was published. These legends were brought to the United States in the 1700s, when German immigrants settled in Pennsylvania Dutch country, according to the Center for Children’s Literature and Culture.

The tradition of making nests for the rabbit to lay its eggs in soon followed. OMRI : What It Is and Why it Matters

Go through the yard and garden area in any store and read the labels on herbicides, pesticides, seeds, soil amendments, just about anything, and before long you will run across it - the OMRI anachronym.

These four very important letters stand for Organic materials Review Institute. This is an international, non-profit organizations whose function is to determine which input products are allowed for use in organic production and processing.*

Although it sounds huge in scope, it is small in number as about 37 staff run the organizatio out of Eugene, Oregon. They are professionals and the Board Members are a group of farmers, input suppliers, processors, buyers, academia and public interest groups to name a few.

OMRI supports organic integrity by developing clear information and guidance about materials, so that producers know which products are appropriate for organic operations. OMRI is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides an independent review of products, such as fertilizers, pest controls, livestock health care products, and numerous other inputs that are intended for use in certified organic production and processing. When companies apply, OMRI reviews their products against the organic standards. Acceptable products are OMRI Listed® and appear on the OMRI Products List© or OMRI Canada Products List©. OMRI also provides technical support and training for professionals in the organic industry.** Organic certification is a certification process for producers of organic food and other organic agricultural products. In general, any business directly involved in food production can be certified, including seed suppliers, farmers, food processors, retailers and restaurants. A lesser known counterpart is certification for organic textiles (or Organic clothing) that includes certification of textile products made from organically grown fibres.

Requirements vary from country to country and generally involve a set of production standards for growing, storage, processing, packaging and shipping that include: avoidance of synthetic chemical inputs (e.g. fertilizer, pesticides, antibiotics, food additives), irradiation, and the use of sewage sludge;[1] avoidance of genetically modified seed; use of farmland that has been free from prohibited chemical inputs for a number of years (often, three or more); for livestock, adhering to specific requirements for feed, housing, and breeding; keeping detailed written production and sales records (audit trail); maintaining strict physical separation of organic products from noncertified products; undergoing periodic on-site inspections.

In some countries, certification is overseen by the government, and commercial use of the term organic is legally restricted. Certified organic producers are also subject to the same agricultural, food safety and other government regulations that apply to non-certified producers.

Certified organic foods are not necessarily pesticide-free, as certain pesticides are allowed.

Noxious weeds in the State of Idaho are grouped in to categories based on the estimated acreages infested, they are as follows in ascending order: level one – Early Detection Rapid Response (EDRR), level two – Containment, level three – Control. Bonner County uses the same nomenclature to categorize noxious weeds to suit our locale; the noxious weed issues in Bonner County are not the same as Canyon County [for instance]. We receive grant funds from the State of Idaho to control EDRR noxious weeds at the county level, one of which I am going to present…

Weed of the Month is Bohemian Knotweed (Polygonum X bohemicum). It is a state listed noxious weed in the Control category, Bonner County has it listed in the [local] EDRR category. It infests a handful of sites throughout the county, but the total acres infested is under 100 and is somewhat habitat specific, thus justifying a case for possible eradication. I will point out that there are two other large Knotweeds, Japanese Knotweed and Giant Knotweed, Bohemian is a hybrid between the two and all three are collectively referred to as the “large Knotweed complex.” The Bohemian version makes up about 90% of the overall large Knotweed population in Bonner County, but the entire complex is treated the same. They are woody, upright perennials with hollow stems and grow up to 12 feet in height—it has been referred to as imitation Bamboo. Bohemian Knotweed specifically has ovalshaped leaves that are about 4 to 10 inches long and about two-thirds as wide that taper to a point. The flowers are white and grow in clusters erect on the stems. Just for comparison’s sake, the flower clusters droop from the stems on Japanese Knotweed.

Bohemian Knotweed likes moist environments and disturbed sites; it can be found along creek banks, riparian areas, waste areas, city alleys, landscapes and residential/commercial properties where recent construction or renovation has taken place. The large Knotweeds were introduced from East Asia as ornamentals and became popular buffer vegetation, in large part due to its tall stature and ease to culture. Reproduction occurs primarily by rhizomes (roots) and nodal portions of the stem—seeds are capable of reproducing new plants as well. The rhizomes are massive and extend their proverbial tentacles out approximately 20 feet from each parent plant.

These rhizomes are so aggressive that they are capable of causing destruction to property—they can push sidewalks and paved pathways up (similar to tree roots) and can even break apart home foundations! Mulching with plastic or fabric may be the best non-chemical option for some control—but again, the colony needs to be fairly small to achieve any reasonable control since the main enemy is the outrageously large and sprawling root system. Herbicide options include triclopyr products, imazapyr products and aminopyralid (Milestone®), and usually requires repeat applications to exhaust the roots. Triclopyr (Vastlan®) and aminopyralid (Milestone®) are selective herbicides and when tank mixed along with an MSO surfactant provide the best control in situations allowable per the labels. Imazapyr (Polaris®) is a non-selective herbicide [labeled for both terrestrial and aquatic uses] and is often utilized where an application along a creek bank will result in the spray droplets falling directly in to the water. If the stream/creek/river/pond is or leads to a public waterway, it is considered waters of the U.S. and any chemical application within these waters requires a professional applicator and permit coverage through the EPA. One more control option with herbicide involves cutting the plants and administering un-diluted product, localized, in to each stem. The cut stem method is tedious but may be the only viable option in certain landscaping situations where over-spray with a foliar application would damage nearby ornamentals. Labeled products for cut stem treatment of the large Knotweeds include triclopyr and glyphosate chemistries.

Feel free to call the Bonner County Weeds office for any additional details on these control methods. However, as I mentioned in the opening paragraph, the State of Idaho provides the counties with grant funds to control their EDRR listed weeds. If you have Bohemian Knotweed (or any of the large Knotweeds) and are interested in taking advantage of this program, contact us to sign an agreement allowing County personnel on to your property to perform an herbicide treatment at no cost—including repeat applications. It would be foliar herbicide applications, so if that fits your situation we would be thrilled to take care of it and hopefully get Bonner County that much closer to eradication status with the large Knotweeds.

BC Gardeners Offer Spring Classes

It is March, the days are longer, and North Idaho gardeners begin thinking about getting their hands into the soil for planting season. The Bonner County Gardeners Association has scheduled an outstanding roster of classes to tease the gardener’s imagination and to provide new ideas to try in the coming season. The Home Horticulture series is offered annually, in spring and fall, with a selection of timely topics taught by knowledgeable instructors. Anyone interested in one or all of the topics is welcome. The classes are all held at the BCGA classroom, Suite F, in the Bonner Events Center at 401 Bonner Mall Way in Ponderay. All classes are on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 pm. April 11: Native Plants, with Derek Antonelli. Learn about local native plants. Also, Native Plant Edibles with an Historical Perspective, instructed

by Kevin Lyons, Cultural Resources Management of the Kalispel Tribe.

April 18: Basic Irrigation Systems for Gardening, taught by Sean Mitzel.

Students of this class will explore different principles regarding water and irrigation design. We will also look at a few techniques for setting up effective , easy to build and maintain, inexpensive irrigation systems.

April 25: Planting Trees and Shrubs Successfully, with John Hastings of All Seasons Garden and Floral. John will discuss planting shrubs and trees under a variety of conditions, such as slopes and difficult areas and how to insure healthy, long lived plants.

May 2: Growing and Using Herbs, taught by Monica Mitzel. Learn how to use common weeds, bushes and trees for medicinal and edible purposes.

This class will include recipes for infused oil, salves, vinegars, food and drinks.

Plant A Seed and Watch It Grow Ah, March, when the sun is higher in the sky and the promise of spring is in the air. Gardeners are ready to start planting, but the North Idaho climate says, “Whoa, slow down, it’s way too cold.” The resourceful northern gardener can easily start a few plants indoors to get a head start on the season.

Setting up a simple light system is inexpensive and fun. All one needs is room to place a standard shop light--about a foot by four feet by two feet in height. I have installed a light under a small work bench in my office. It doesn’t take up much space, but you need to be able to raise and lower the light over the plants. I put a piece of heavy plastic on the floor below the light to protect from water leakage. Attach a timer to turn the light on and off on schedule, and you have a mini garden space.

What you need to get started: Standard plug-in shop light, 1’ x 4’ Fluourescent bulbs, higher lumens if possible.

To determine when to plant the seeds, check the seed packet instructions.

Generally, the packet will say to start the seeds a certain number of weeks before setting out. In our area, we must wait until the soil is sufficiently warm to prevent shocking the plants. Mid to late May is a good estimate.

When the plants are large enough that the roots are touching the container sides, it is time to transplant to larger pots, also sterilized, but filled with a Sterilize the flats, liners, and seeding pots with a 10% bleach solution and let good grade of all purpose potting soil. At this point, one needs a lot more space, so count on more lights or transferring to a sheltered, warm greendry. This eliminates harmful bacteria that could infect seedlings.

All family forest, farm and ranch landowners and managers are invited to the 30th annual Family Forest Landowners & Managers Conference on March 25-27, 2018 at the University Inn-Best Western Plus, 1516 W. Pullman Road in Moscow, Idaho.

The 2018 conference theme is “SECURING THE FUTURE OF MY FOREST: BALANCING THE RISKS AND REWARDS”. On March 10, 2018 the CO-OP Country Store is the place to be for fun, food, prizes, vendors, balloons, face painting, great deals throughout the store, demonstrations and a whole bunch more! This is the day we celebrate you, our treasured customers, and we want to make sure you know you are invited to join us for this fun day. Vendors will be in place from 9 am into the afternoon. We will be serving Papa Murphy’s Pizza from 11:30 am - 1 pm and you don’t want to miss that.

The CO-OP Gas & Supply Company is celebrating 84 years in business here in Bonner County. This is no small thing. The Cooperative has been here almost as long as Sandpoint has been on the map. Many changes have come and gone and the face of the CO-OP itself has changed as well. In the past, when the CO-OP first opened, farmers and ranchers were those mainly coming through the doors. Timber workers have also depended on us and we have always had a soft spot for the homemaker.

Our past newsletter, “The CO-OP Bulletin” , was printed monthly by the CO-OP and featured such information as sales in the store, new products, shipping issues, political issues impacting the agricultural world, and a reminder of what part the cooperative played in everyones lives. It ran from about 1939 through the late 40’s. Just two sides of a legal sheet of paper, it contained the heart and soul of the CO-OP penned by caring souls. We often look back at these newsletters as a guide for the current Round Up so we don’t miss the flavor, the intense commitment of the CO-OP to be there for the customer and the community for many years to come. But we also find among those pages trends that have changed over the years. One 1939 newsletter referred to the free ranging of laying hens as being “out” . This had to do with changes in feed and breeding stock for increased, up to 3 times, the normal egg production in laying hens. But these days we find many people preferring eggs produced by free range chickens. Today we are more likely to hear about “GMO” food or the need for more small farms, not less. How times do change.

The CO-OP Gas & Supply Company has seen many changes over the years. Some of these changes, such as the birth of Co-op Energy in 2000, have been in answer to the changes in how we live. Propane became a preferred way to heat the home and business as opposed to wood or stove oil and Co-op Energy was created to better answer that need. Co-op Energy continues to thrive here in North Idaho.

The Annual Meeting of the Cooperative will be held at 9:30 am on March 10, 2018 at the CO-OP Country Store in Ponderay with registration begining at 8:15 am. We hope all members will attend as this is where we do the business of running this very old, and very important community cooperative. Come and see what the cooperative has achieved over these last year and how our Board of Directors have worked together to make the CO-OP Gas & Supply Co., Inc. a strong, vibrant business able to weather the economic challenges facing us all. The store will be filled witrh vendors and community information tables on everything from beekeeping, to gardening and more. We will see you there!

Still So Much To Do Before Winter Ends

You hear it every day. Spring is on the way. That’s true,, but don’t miss what is still in front of us in this waning winter season.

Before long the snow in the valleys will begin to melt. Before that happens, why not consider some snow shoeing? This is a great exercise option for those sunny days that are still a bit chilly. Almost any sporting good store will stock a variety of snow shoes. They can be a bit spend, but with care they can last for many seasons.

This activity gets the heart rate up without the heavy stresses of skiing or jogging.

Just the other day some folks were cross country skiing on the old U of I property on north Boyer. That’s making good use of a beautiful space. It was great to see this taking place inside the city limits.

The walking path that goes from Dover all the way into Sandpoint remains open if a bit snowy. With a little extra traction and a warm outfit, a good long walk can be had. This is also a great place to walk the dog or spend some time in meditation as you enjoy nature. The path can be picked up in Kootenai and followed to Hwy 95, across the highway, through Sandpoint, connecting just about anywhere on the west side of town, and then on to Dover and back again.

Do you want to get out but you don’t want to drive in the snow or walk in the weather?

How about a leisurely bus ride? Why not take a ride on the SPOT Bus. It travels throughout Kootenai, Ponderay, Sandpoint and Dover picking up travelers along the way.

Schweitzer Basin an many other ski hills remain open for a few more weeks, And don’t forget that bird watching is a favorite pastime in this area. Don’t know what birds to look for? Check with the Audubon Society. This group can help you discover what birds are likely to be seen in any given area throughout the year. Bird watching and wildlife observation is another teachable moment for the youngsters as well. Check with the local Fish and Game to discover where you are most likely to observe wildlife where you live.

Spring is not here yet and there is so much outdoors to still enjoy. See you out there!

Gather on March 31 for Hunter Jacobson Benefit

“[The support has been] unbelievably overwhelming. ‘Thank you’ can’t begin to express our gratitude,” said Bob. “It shows you what kind of community we live in and the character of the people who live here.”

He said the support to him and his family, including Hunter’s mom April and their other two sons, Tanner a 2015 graduate of SHS and Walker a 2017 SHS graduate, has been amazing. “Everyone including family, friends, the entire community, my co-workers and the hospital staff have been so supportive,” said Bob. To help with costs not covered by insurance, and there are many, there is Go Fund Me account set up with a goal of raising $10,000 that has already reached nearly $8,000. Recently, Jalapeno’s Mexican Restaurant hosted an evening, Dine Out For a Cause, which raised just short of $6,000 for the Jacobson family.

A large portion of the money raised that evening was due to the efforts of Hunter’s close friends, Eli Daugherty, Zander Moore and Zac Kohal who passed out bracelets and stickers in exchange for donations. It was a wonderful example of how the youth in the community have come together to help their friend.

And there are even more opportunities to show support for Hunter and his family.

Mark your calendars for March 31 as you do not want to miss the Hunter Jacobson Benefit. The event is an opportunity for the community to come together and support Hunter while also enjoying a wonderful catered dinner, wine and beer, music, dancing, and live and silent auctions.

It has been in the planning for several weeks and organizers are thrilled with the response received. “People are contacting us all the time to ask how they can help,” said Carmen Daugherty, a member of the committee and a long time friend of the Jacobson family.

With music from the extremely popular Miah Kohal Band and a kids’ bar where they can prepare their own concoctions, there will be something for everyone!

“We have had several donations coming in already and they are awesome!” said Carmen. Some of the items include: two season passes to the Festival at Sandpoint, a beach cruiser from Super 1 Foods, a sixfoot sub from Mr. Sub, and a three-night stay at the Idaho Club which includes three rounds of golf for four donated by Go Sandpoint – Vacation Home Specialists.

It will be a time to not only provide support to the Jacobson family, but also to one another as the community holds onto hope that this much loved young man will soon return to his passion of living life to the fullest—and for those that know Hunter, there is no doubt he will be OK. “Hunter likes to joke around with people and pull practical jokes,” said Bob about his youngest son. “He’s also stubborn and has a mind of his own.” It is that tenacity that Bob and others pray will pull Hunter through this.

Steve Russo, a longtime friend of the family, agrees.

“Hunter is one of those kids that can do anything he sets his mind to, whether it is football, baseball, basketball or motocross, he just excels at anything he gets involved with,” said Russo. “Some may overlook him because he is a humble, respectful kid and wise beyond his years. But under that, Hunter is a competitor and a fighter!”

For those who never have met Hunter Jacobson, they have by now likely heard his name. The young Sandpoint High School freshman was critically injured in an accident on December 2. Since that time, he lies in a coma in a Spokane hospital with family and friends keeping a constant vigil by his bedside while the community rallies around him to do all they can to support his recovery.

“Improvements have been small but encouraging. His eyes are open, and he will watch and follow those around him with his eyes,” said Hunter’s dad, Bob Jacobson. “He is breathing on his own and is moving all of his limbs, but he is still considered in a conscious coma.”

Outfitted in full, top-of-the-line riding gear, Hunter was riding his dirt bike when he experienced the serious accident.

“He was riding with a friend, Nick Stangel, in Naples at the designated riding area,” said Bob who went on to explain that Hunter had received a new bike in October and was preparing for an upcoming race in Kalispell.

“No one saw the accident so we are not sure exactly what happened. All we know is that he went off a jump and did not land well. We are not sure how he hit his head but he has a severe TBI [traumatic brain injury].”

With Life Flight not an option due to the weather, Hunter was transported to Kootenai Medical Center where he was diagnosed with critical head trauma, a ruptured spleen, 11 broken ribs, a broken collarbone, broken scapula and a collapsed lung. After the medical team at Kootenai Medical Center removed his spleen, Hunter was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane where he remains today.

With pressure increasing in Hunter’s brain, the doctors at Sacred Heart removed the left side of Hunter’s skull as well as a small portion of his brain to relieve the pressure.

Nearly three months after the accident and showing signs of improvement, the future for Hunter is still uncertain as his body tries to repair itself from the trauma of the accident.

When asked to describe his son in one word, Bob responded, “adventurous.”

In addition to being a very outgoing and athletic young man, Hunter has always showed a lot of natural talent when it comes to sports. Bob said his son is involved in many things including baseball, football, basketball and motorcycle racing. But it was during Hunters 7th and 8th grade years when his true passion turned to racing.

“4-H was starting a new motorcycle club (BC Trailblazers), and he was really excited about being part of that and being the team leader for it,” said Bob. “He also loves to hunt. He has been able to hunt for the past two years and has harvested his elk and deer both years. He still planned on playing baseball but had set aside football and basketball for more track time at the motocross track. He had a very successful summer racing…He loves to race.”

Exciting News in Cancer Treatments

On a recent gorgeously sunny yet freezing day with lots of fresh snow, we went exploring in the woods behind our house. Well, the path disappeared and we had no idea where we would come out. Navigating brush, hidden fallen trees, steep slopes and many falls, we finally came out at a familiar patch – reconnecting with a new perspective.

I was giving a presentation at the recent naturopathic oncologist conference (OncANP) in Phoenix Arizona. Something compelled me to present a case study of my Mom’s journey with cancer, as it was quite unique with her refusing all treatments – conventional or naturopathic. However, I wasn’t quite sure how the presentation would unfold and what my final conclusions actually would be. I would like to share what came of this authentic daring to step out and then reconnecting with a new perspective.

I was facing a conflict between the conference requirement of evidencebased medicine and my desire to share the human aspect of the cancer journey all the way into death. My decision to go with the latter was confirmed by a lecture that focused on “Post Traumatic Growth. Cancer patients and survivors deal with major disruption of their entire life construct.

Conventional support focuses on adaption and avoidance of this disruption with the attempt to make everything return back to normal as quickly as possible. However, there is an opportunity here to re-evaluate meaning and purpose and allow for deep transformation, which can foster healing whether the cancer journey leads to death or cancer regression.

Another presentation focused on two basic physiological requirements for spontaneous remission to occur: (1) immune stimulation and (2) antigenic presentation. Cancer cells are very adept at hiding from the immune system. To reverse that process either the tumor antigens have to be exposed and/or the immune system has to be more sensitized.

It has long been known that cancers regress during an active injury and severe infection. Coley’s toxin, hyperthermia, and mistletoe injections have been used based on the understanding that it’s not the bacteria but the resulting fever and inflammation that is making the immune system more alert.

Curiously, vaccines also seem to be responsible for cancer remissions. For example, cholera vaccine has been shown to reduce mortality of colorectal cancer. There are case reports of metastatic melanoma regressing with DPT shots. The nasty stuff that we don’t like in the vaccines and which is there to make it more effective, might just cause more immune stimulation for the immune system to recognize cancer cells.

So here comes part two, namely exposing the tumor cell antigens to the activated immune cells. Tumor injury is the most direct way to achieve this.

This can be achieved by biopsy, radiation therapy, chemo, or cryo-ablation.

It is a commonly known fact that radiotherapy of a tumor can cause metastatic regression in a different part of the body. There are numerous studies using PD1 inhibitor immune therapy drugs concurrently with radiation therapy. They act like a Harry Potter cloak – they remove the inhibition of immune cells to recognize cancer cells. The disturbance of the tumor via radiation together with a stimulated immune system has been shown to improve survival.

This presents very exciting possibilities for combining natural medicine with conventional medicine to improve the chances of spontaneous remission. Beyond the idea of getting vaccinated or injured, we can use herbs that have been shown to improve vaccinations, such as Astragalus, during conventional treatment. We can use hyperthermia, Mistletoe injections, and other herbs or mushrooms that have evidence to stimulate the immune system to clean up after conventional treatment. We might use mushrooms like Coriolus, which acts like a PD1 inhibitor, before conventional treatment.

Improving gut microbiome diversity as well as reducing Insulin Growth Factor has been shown to improve PD1 inhibitor treatment. Lots of evidence was presented that exercise and modulation of stress response increase survival rates.

Considering all these conventional treatments this might not sound like spontaneous remission. Actually, several studies confirmed that there is no equivalent alternative to conventional treatment. For example breast and lung cancer patients without conventional treatment had a 400% and 100% decrease in overall survival respectively. Natural treatments generally are just not powerful enough to reduce tumor load enough for the immune system, even if stimulated, to take care of. However, we can increase the chances of spontaneous remission by applying what we know both physiologically and psychologically. And that includes the previously mentioned concept of post-traumatic growth.

This concept represents the underlying thread in cases described in the books “Spontaneous Remission” by Dr. Kelly Turner, and “A Mind of Your Own” by Dr Kelly Morgan. Maybe disease is not just a way to deal with toxins, but also a way of the body to say: “hey, you need to pay attention here, you can’t just continue to stuff everything under the carpet.” As Dr. Schubiner describes so eloquently in “Unlearn Your Own Pain”, often it is easier to deal with physical disease than emotional pain.

Cancer and the disease process might just provide the opportunity to reveal an internal conflict that has been keeping the immune system busy, tying up a lot of energy and causing chronic low-grade inflammation, a perfect milieu for cancer to grow. By facilitating integration of unresolved issues and uncovering deeper meaning, we are potentially freeing the immune system to address the actual cancer. It’s kind of like the PD1 inhibitors removing a block on the immune system so it can attack the tumor.

Encouraging post-traumatic growth is a powerful tool, and can be facilitated

by MBSR, meditation, reflection, prayer, iRest dialogue, positive psychology and various other tools. My presentation was a living, learning example of how to do this as a caregiver – I very deliberately took my doctor hat off, because I wanted to be fully present with my Mom to facilitate her healing process. She had a very full life and wanted to face this last phase as fully as possible. She ended up dying but the whole process was an important part of her healing journey, as unresolved, long buried issues got integrated.

Others have more desire to live and can take advantage of conventional medicine’s powerful way to disturb the tumor, thus presenting tumor antigens to an immune system that is activated by immunotherapy drugs and/or natural agents. Either can benefit from the opportunity to transform trauma into growth, which might just increase one’s chance for spontaneous remission and an opening to a more meaningful and joyful life.

Stepping into new territory with authentically presenting my Mom’s case at a conference allowed new perspectives to open and reconnect on a different level. My presentation showed the human side that cancer patients and their caregivers go through to physicians and stimulated discussion about not just including but also going beyond evidenced based medicine. Inspiration can open new windows and doors and provide renewed motivation.

This Year, Plant a Garden for Pollinators

When we think of pollinators, honey bees often come to mind. They are, of course, very important to pollination and thereby our food supply as well. If the flowers on fruit trees, vegetables, nut trees and more do not get fertilized, fruit will not be formed. It is, in fact, serious. However, the good news is that honey bees are not the only pollinators working the fields. A quick trip through an orchard or garden reveals Bumble Bees, wasps, butterflies, humming birds and even on some occasions Yellow Jacket Wasps, are also doing the work of pollination. When the spring season is upon us and the world around us begins to hum, it is time to watch the pollinators at work.

We can help these pollinators survive by doing some very simple things. Our yard is one of the first lines of defence for honey bees. The dandelions that pop up is the first food source for honey bees in particular. Though we may be tempted to kill these bright yellow “weeds”, consider that just leaving them there for the first few weeks can mean giving the pollinators a jump start to strengthen them for the season ahead.

If you have landscaping space available around your home or even in your garden, consider planting a butterfly or hummingbird garden. It is easy to go on line and find a list of flowers and herbs which attract these pollinators. Not only are the blooms lovely, but you will experience the added joy of watching a new population of species humming about your home. excavation & û For those of us with children, having land clearing pollinators working around the home becomes a teachable moment for chillandscaping û dren. North Idaho Real Estate Recap 2017: A Good Place to Invest? by Jim Haynes, Associate Broker,

2017 was a good year for real estate both nationally and regionally.

Prices continued the recovery they started in 2011/2012. Below is a plot of median1 home sales price by year from 2010 to 2017 for the total United States and the three northern Idaho counties. total United States and the three northern Idaho counties.

Notice the overall upward trend for all geographic areas since 2012. Also notice that in 2012 the United States, Bonner County and Kootenai County all had very nearly the same median home sales price (approximately $174,000). Since 2012 median home sales prices in Bonner and Kootenai Counties have increased at a faster rate than the national average. For the last five years national median home sales prices have been up 5-6% per year. In Bonner and Kootenai Counties that yearly sales price appreciation has been twice as much (10 to 12% per year). As a result the house in Bonner and Kootenai County that was worth very nearly the same amount as the national median home sales price in 2012 is now worth significantly more ($23,000 to $48,000 based on 4th quarter 2017 sales).

Even in Boundary County, which lags the other northern Idaho counties in median home sales prices, the last five years have seen value increases of just under 10% on a year over year basis.

Less Inventory Puts Upward Pressure on Prices Both nationally and regionally median home sales prices and the number of homes sold have increased over the last several years (see real estate statistics this issue). Nationally, median home sales prices have been up on a year over year basis (current month as compared to the same month one year earlier) for 70 straight months. Sales would have been even better except for the low inventory. Nationally, in December of 2017 there were 3.2 months of inventory which marks the 31st straight month in which inventory has decreased. The 3.2 month of inventory marks the lowest level since 1999 which is when the National Association of Realtors started tracking the inventory. These conditions put significant upward pressure on prices nationally.

Locally there has been a similar trend in inventory. Current active listings are down approximately 20% over the same time last year and are down 66% since 2011. Our local inventory is 3.7 months which is significantly shorter than our historic norm. Together this puts upward pressure on prices locally.

Prices Going Forward Prices nationally are predicted to continue to increase at, or near, the current rate. Regionally, the trend going forward should follow the national trend but at a more robust pace (10-12%). Interest rates which are approaching 4% for 30 year fixed rate mortgages are expected to continue a modest increase reducing the buying power of home buyers.

In summary, if you are considering purchasing a home there may never be a better time going forward with the favorable interest rates still currently near historic lows. Waiting in this market will mean paying more for the same house in the future. If you are considering selling you should be able to obtain a good price and spend less time on market to achieve a sale. Consult your real estate professional and see how you might benefit from current market conditions.
