Spring Will Come ‘Round Again

Although it may not feel like it right at the moment, Spring is on the way.

We just have to endure some snow melt, some muddy roads, some sporadic wind and spectacular thunder storms in the mean time. But Spring will come. It always does. And with it will come that glorious sunshine and warmth we have missed for what seems like forever.

Getting ready for spring is a process that really begins in January. Now that the gardens have been planned out, the garden catalogs, ragged edges and all set aside, we make our way to the garden seeds, potting soils, seed starter mixes. It is impossible for the yard and garden enthusiast to begin shopping too early. Simply impossible.

On the following pages you will find everything from gardening preparations to classes for naturalists at heart, to horseback riding tuneups and weed identification. We also have the Annual meeting of the CO-OP Gas & Supply Membership coming up as well as Country Spirit Day here at the store. This is our annual celebration thanking the community for their support resulting in another profitable year for the co-op.

Part of this celebration will continue later in the spring in the paying out of dividends. The cooperative has been healthy enough to do this for several years now. It is the result of excellent leadership, sustainable financial practices, a knowledgeable work force and ownership of the company by the community that shops here. This is primarily what sets a cooperative apart from any other retail business. You can find the Annual Meeting / Country Spirit Day insert in the center of this publication.

Boundary County U of I has a list of classes on page 4. It looks like something for just about everyone!

Here at the CO-OP we have a Beekeeping Clinic on tap for March 16th and George’s Annual Tree Sale on April 26th! While these events may help anyone get started on a beekeeping or tree planting project, it is the ongoing access to information throughout the process which can make the difference between success and failure. The CO-OP can help with that!

On page 10 Chase Youngdahl from the Bonner County Weed Department tackles Bromus tectorum, better known as Cheatgrass. Take a look and learn how to manage this grass.

You can find our Local Producer List on page 17. Use this resource to find produce, goods, and services that you may not be able to come up with on your own in this rural setting.

There is much to do to prepare for the seasonal change to come. We hope that this issue will inspire you to grow more, see more, learn more and go into the season prepared to make the most of it. Because despite what it may look like out there today, spring will come ‘round again.

GMOs and Their Impact on Food Security

I took a little holiday break from this series but am eager to continue. In the September issue of the CO-OP Round Up I wrote a very simple article about Genetically Modified Organisms and how their genetic makeup is different than a normal hybrid cross organism. If you recall, the primary difference is with a GMO the genetic material has been artificially manipulated. Something has been introduced into the GMOs DNA that would normally never occur in nature such as material from a species of animal, plant, or virus for example.

This is the sticking point for most people when the subject of GMOs arises.

What, exactly, has been done to the animal? The seed? The food?? I wrote about the FLAVR-SAVR tomato introduced into supermarkets in 1994. This variety of tomato was intended to deal with the problem of tasteless tomatoes in stores which resulted from fruit shipped prior to ripening. The public liked the tomato, just not the mutant aspect of the fruit. And yet, people still wanted a better tasting tomato to be available at the supermarket.

The question of providing tasty, vine ripened tomatoes has been answered in the last 28 years in largely the same way it was before - the fruit stand or in todays’ vernacular “The Farmers Market”. I have been to farmers markets in just about every state I have visited and for the most part the offerings are much the same – good tasting, fresh local produce. These markets abound though-out the nation. Our local market can take SNAP cards so even the financially challenged community can have access to quality fresh fruits and vegetables. But what about the rest of the world? I was accustomed to the idea of seed hybrids as my mother used them for while you wait! years often ordering from Burpee’s seed company.

My Bodacious corn grew to 9 feet tall and some stalks produced three huge ears of corn.

My heirloom corn barely reached 4’ tall and produced a single 5” corn cob. I began to question the wisdom of ever devoting 1 square foot of precious space to this meager harvest again.

After my last installment a reader suggested that if I thought technology (GMOs) had had anything to do with food security throughout the world I was not only mistaken, but misinformed and might as well work for Monsanto. So I dug a little deeper and found that not only was I not misinformed, the world is actually producing more food than it needs. More wheat, more corn, more rice, and more of all the fresh fruits and vegetables necessary to feed the world. This is due in great part to the production of GMO seeds that can produce more food per acre than ever before in our known agricultural history.

This information is widely available in the most current UN Food Security Reports dating back to 2015. According to these reports what is actually causing the food insecurity has nothing to do with Your Healthcare Home climate or the ability to grow food. It has to do with political instability and weak social fabrics.

Supportive Partnership with Your Horse

Looking ahead to the upcoming riding season, whether you ride for pleasure or are a competitor, you can strive to offer a supportive partnership towards your horse. I will touch on two concepts that you can start considering, without even having to battle the outdoor winter conditions!

The first is addressing your mental focus. Often we think of riding as an escape from the everyday challenges and stresses of life. The horse on the other hand can immediately recognize if the person is not mentally present, if they are distracted, stressed, tired, etc.

I suggest folks learn how to mentally “leave reality at the door” when they are heading out to ride. My perspective is that the ride begins when someone thinks about going for the ride. Mentally separating other aspects of life from the time spent with the horse allows a rider to offer the same level of consideration, conversation and focus they are asking from their horse.

When mentally present, a person can communicate proactively with their horse, rather than only offering input or critique after the horse has made an undesired movement. When people are distracted, they tend to only notice the big and dramatic moments, rather than the subtle ones when the horse is initially asking for guidance or support. If the human suddenly tries to intervene during peak stress or fear in the horse, it can cause defensiveness towards the rider’s aids.

Intentional guidance from the rider (which should not be presented as a dictatorship to the horse), what I call “riding in real time,” increases the clarity and timing towards what the horse is about to offer. This also decreases the critical, after-the-fact interaction that occurs between many humans and horses.

A rider’s constant critique is a leading contributor to creating defensive horses. By taking the initiative and offering specific intention, the horse can be clear on what will be asked of him. This can build his confidence and increases his willingness to try, because the rider will be offering respectful and specific communication.

Addressing your own mental presence leads to my next topic: riding goals, intentions and the horse’s thought. As they say, “hindsight is 20/20.” Take a few minutes and think about the last one or two riding seasons. What were some challenges that arose between you and your horse and have they been addressed?

For a lot of folks the traditional “wet saddle blankets” approach is used as a way for horses to learn and improve. I find that solely focusing on the horse’s physical movement leads to a continuous “containment” from the rider trying to keep the horse physically compliant. Instead, I prioritize getting the horse’s thought with me first, which then influences his physical movement.

When you think of past experiences with your horse, do you start with “I didn’t want him to…” or “I wish he would not always...” or “I hope we can…”?

Those three sentence starters I frequently hear from riders who are having difficulty achieving goals with their horse. Often people fixate on what they do not want their horse to do, rather than how they can change their approach and help their horse arrive at a different outcome.

Imagine someone was a nervous, inexperienced driver and there were bad road conditions. If before they drove their car you told them “Don’t crash,” would that decrease their chance of getting into an accident? Probably not.

In fact it might even add stress while they were driving and perhaps increase their anxiety.

What if the next time they drive their car, you are a passenger and you say things like, “Don’t go so fast… you slowed too much… stop sooner… why did you change lanes?” Would your words relax, build confidence or reassure the already insecure driver? Did you teach them anything? Have you helped improve their driving ability? Has your presence made driving a better experience for them, inspiring them to invite you along in the future? No, it has not. Instead, you have made them feel worse due to your approach in how you interacted with them, even if your intentions were good.

Unintentionally many people create that same experience for their horse.

The person wonders why they are not achieving the results in their horse’s performance. If the rider continues offering delayed, critical, task-fixated focus irrelevant of the quality, they are not supporting their horse.

In terms of goals with your own horse, before presenting the back country trail ride, the jump, roping the steer or working on your 20 meter Dressage circle, mentally think through what and how you will need to communicate the small pieces that will contribute to achieving the overall goal. Often through specific, incremental communication from the rider presenting “pieces” of the goal, the horse can better understand the specificity of the movement and build confidence. Below is an example.

Let us say you ask your horse to change his energy at the walk, and he ignores you, leaks out with his shoulder, clamps his jaw down on the bit, or stays stuck at one speed. What will happen when you ask him to move faster? Whatever you are feeling at the slower gait will magnify at the faster energy level.

If you ignore his initial feedback of resistant and defensive behavior, and attempt to be more specific, such as trying to improve your flying lead changes, roll backs, or finding the ideal spot to the jump, is your horse currently mentally available to hear you? Will his response be to softly address

a physical change you ask of him? No. Presenting the long term goal when you are missing the foundational pieces is setting the horse up to fail and be critiqued.

So take some time on those cold, dark days and perhaps jot down your equine related goals, and what incremental pieces you’ll need to address with your horse to help you both achieve them with quality.

Annual Landowners/Managers Conference Slated for March 24-26, 2019

All family forest, farm and ranch landowners and managers are invited to the 31st annual Family Forest Landowners & Managers Conference on March 24-26, 2019 at the University Inn-Best Western Plus, 1516 W. Pullman Road in Moscow, Idaho.

The 2019 conference theme is “IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU!!!”. Presentations will be grouped in four general sessions: New Kids on the Block; Forestry: The Old and the New; Now What Do I Do?; and Breakout: Find Your Tracks.

Lunches and refreshment breaks are included. Special treats are a sponsored social and a “Spit & Whittle” session question and answer session with foresters from the IDL. March is the Time to Spruce Up Your Home

March, a.k.a. “Mud Season”. Anyone who lives in North Idaho can attest that it is our least beautiful time of year. For those of us not lucky enough to escape to some exotically warm vacation spot, it is the ideal time to turn our attention indoors. Many of us are familiar with the ol’ spring cleaning routine, but why not take it one (or two) steps further?

First, start with a clean house. Do your best to get into all the nooks and crannies, decluttering as you go. Then take an honest look at your home.

Ask yourself what you’d like to change, what bothers you, and what you’d like to keep. If, for example, your walls are getting a bit dingy and the last time you painted was twenty years ago, a fresh coat of paint could mean a world of difference. If your sofa is looking a bit dated or saggy, it might be time for a new one. Sometimes little things, like rearranging the art on your walls, or adding baskets to store clutter can make a big difference.

If you’ve decided it’s time to tackle a bigger project, early spring is the perfect time to start. In high summer, flooring installers and other sub-contractors are typically very busy, working with our booming new construction industry.

This time of year, available crews for quality work are much easier to come by, and it is still cold enough that many contractors and sub-contractors are looking for indoor work.

So, where to start if you are looking to plan a kitchen or bath remodel?

Well, it depends. I usually recommend starting with cabinetry, as this is a big investment and can really set the tone for the finished product. Then select complimentary flooring. Then, head back over to the cabinet shop to select countertops that will compliment both, and then, finally, back over to the flooring store to choose a tile backsplash to bring in a little personality.

If this seems intimidating to you, don’t hesitate to speak to a professional.

Most of us have been working in the industry a long time and are happy to give advice on color, type, finishes, etc. If there are certain elements in your home that you are going to keep, such as cabinetry, but you want to select a new floor, bring in a sample! It may seem crazy to bring a cabinet door or drawer from your kitchen out shopping with you, but it really does help narrow down acceptable options. At the very least, bring in a photo, so that you can compare colors and finishes with possible options for flooring, etc.

I also recommend this approach when shopping for complimentary furniture.

Weed of the Month - Cheatgrass

Winter annuals germinate in the fall, lay dormant throughout the winter, then bolt in the spring when most other plants are still trying to crawl out of dormancy. As such, winter annual weeds will be the first ones you see pop up across the landscape this spring. They flower, set seed and senesce (die off) by the end of spring/beginning of summer.

Weed of the month is Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), also called Downy Brome. It’s a winter annual grass that came in from the Mediterranean region in packing materials. Not a noxious weed in Idaho but can be a nuisance, and one that my office receives a few calls on every year. Being a winter annual, it shows itself relatively early in the growing season—one of just a handful of prolific winter annual grasses in our area. The main identifying characteristic is the seed heads; at maturity they are 2 to 6 inches long while drooping to one side, and they exhibit a purplish color [just prior to disbursing seed] that distinguishes them from their surroundings. Looking at a patch of Cheatgrass reminds me of shaggy hair—a pretty clear distinction from the other grasses.

Cheatgrass can be found in pastures, croplands, orchards, roadsides, rangelands and vacant urban/suburban lots. Isolated patches is generally not a big deal, but if the infestation becomes solid the quality of your pasture or crop could deteriorate. The ideal situation for a pasture is to have a stand of healthy, native perennial grasses; Cheatgrass robs resources from the perennials since it starts actively growing earlier in the spring (gets a jump start on the competition). In addition, due to the fact that Cheatgrass dies in early summer, a solid infestation across a pasture can create a tinder box. I think I can speak for most by saying we don’t need any more summer wildfires than we’ve already been experiencing!

The plus side related to control is it will only reproduce by seed, and the seeds are very short lived (2-3 years). The downside is the limited number of tools to battle it if infestations reach a high level—killing a grass out of a desirable stand of grass poses a set of challenges. There is an herbicide on the market specifically for control of annual grasses, winter annuals in particular; Plateau® (Imazapic). While Imazapic has shown to control Cheatgrass in dryland wheat country, field trials in Northern Idaho have demonstrated poor control. Glyphosate products (Roundup® and several generics) would be your best tool for herbicide control, be it spot treatments for isolated patches or a solid treatment for larger infestations. Since Glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide (kills grasses and broadleaves), post treatment of a pasture would require re-seeding with native perennial grasses. Another herbicide option is the use of Milestone® (Aminopyralid)—this is a broadleaf herbicide and does not actually control Cheatgrass, but studies have found that it can reduce the seedbank viability. Not a bad way to tackle a small to moderate infestation of Cheatgrass if you’re already using an Aminopyralid product for broadleaf noxious weed control. Mechanical control for small or isolated patches can be achieved by mowing/cutting/ cultivating before the seeds are ripe. For dealing with large infestations mechanically, a one year fallow for your pasture or crop would be the surest way to gain the upper hand; plow the field under as early as you can in the spring or as late as you can in the fall. For follow up in a pasture, re-seed with a native perennial grass mix—if in a specific crop area, plant a cover crop for the year. There are no biological control agents available for Cheatgrass—some soil fungi and suppressive bacteria have been tested but none have shown to be effective yet.

Don’t hesitate to contact the Bonner County Weeds office for additional information on Cheatgrass; management can be complex and there are usually more details involved than the ‘reader’s digest’ version that I just gave you. Come join us for information packed evenings sure to inspire and inform :TRACKING SHADOWS Sun exposure is one of the essentials for successful gardening. Many vegetable and flowering plants require “full sun” to thrive, which generally means at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. More is often better, especially for crops that require warmth. How many hours of sun fall on your garden, and when does one measure it? Our growing season is roughly from sometime in April (for cool season plants) through September or when regular frosts occur. For best results, one should measure the hours of sun exposure on the garden during each of these months, as the earlier and later months also need that magic six hour period. In mid-June, during the longest days, that same plot of ground will generally receive far more light.

This year marks thirty years we’ve occupied this piece of land. It had been planted to Christmas trees 25 years before, then abandoned, leaving overcrowded, non-native trees that were weak and dying. Between the Christmas trees, ponderosa pines, from seedling to 40 feet tall, were struggling for dominance, and a few larger, mature ponderosas and young Douglas firs were scattered here and there. The overgrown non-native pines have long been removed, creating open spaces for gardens and landscaping, but the native trees have continued to grow, and many are now over 100 feet tall and casting huge shadows. We’ve cut the nearest trees to provide more light, but then noticed that not all the shadows came from our forest.

Last summer, neighbors to the east and south of us harvested their larger trees, and we suddenly had hours more daylight on our property. Now, all the shadows are our own, and we can remove those trees as needed. They are good firewood.

Early spring is a good time to observe the shadows in your garden. Take pictures on sunny days when the sun is high, and be sure to note the date and time. Every couple of weeks, take successive pictures at several times of day until the sun is at its highest, on June 21, the Summer Solstice. You will be able to roughly track the movement of the shadows this way. Also, try to get an idea of the number of hours of sun on specific parts of the garden as the weeks go by.

Track the snow melt in your garden. This will suggest where the shadiest areas lie. The first place to lose all the snow is likely the warmest and sunniest. The last place to lose its snow is the coolest and probably has the

least sun exposure.

Some parts of the garden may once have been sunny, but now are dark, overwhelmed by adjacent taller shrubs or trees. The gardener must weigh options and priorities in order to maintain the perfect environment for each plant. The choice is to remove or prune an overgrown shrub or to move sun-loving plants to another spot. Conversely, perhaps a tree has died, and now a formerly shady nook is sundrenched. Do you plant another tree, or find a cooler, darker place for the plants? These questions keep a gardener innovative and creative. New challenges are part of the fun of gardening.

Climate Change Discussion Has More Than Two Sides

The concept of cooling the planet can be summed up in one simple question. When folks retire, do they move to Alaska and North Dakota? Or do they move to Florida?

Lastly, Gabrielle Duebendorfer suggests it is possible to “actively remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.” More than any of her misstatements, Duebendorfer exhibits a lack of understanding in even the most rudimentary fundamentals of earth science. If by some mysterious magic all industrial activity on earth were to suddenly come to a halt, there would still be about as much CO2 in the atmosphere as before.

Carbon dioxide is a harmless, odorless, tasteless gas and is a natural by-product of the planet, without which all life would cease to exist. Its demonization is perhaps the greatest hoax of the modern era. And whether advanced by movie stars, political pundits, celebrities, or even by local naturopaths, their dire predictions of future calamity are wholly without merit, and in the final analysis are driven not by science but by an agenda.

In the January 2019 issue of the CO-OP Round Up an article appeared written by Dr. Gabrielle Duebendorfer dealing with climate change and the need to address it. The article brought to attention the Citizens Climate Lobby and that there would be an event where citizens could go to have climate questions answered and participate in meaningful discussion.

After the article was published a few readers called and asked about the other side of the issue and would the Round Up allow responses? While it is not the intent of this publication to host ongoing discussion on any subject, the Editor feels that equal time is fair in this case.

By Cort Gifford There are a number of errors both factual and conceptual in Gabrielle Duebendorfer’s “The Big Climate Fix” (Our Changing World) in the January/ February edition of The Co-Op Country Roundup. Duebendorfer reports, “Over 29% of corals on the Great Barrier Reef have died in 2016.” And, “During the last 30 years 50% of coral has disappeared.” Yet researchers from the Australian Institute of Marine Science found, “The overall regional coral cover was stable, ranging from 23% to 33% across the years with no net decline between 1995 and 2009.” They found, “no evidence of system-wide decline in coral cover since 1995.” In 2016, the chairman of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority called out climate activists for exaggerating surveys, maps, and data to hype coral bleaching on the reef.

Duebendorfer states,” It has long been known in physics that increased CO2 causes increased temperature.” Actually, no such relationship exists, either in physics or in any other school of science.

The current warming period began in about the year 1800, long before industrialization or any appreciable increase in carbon dioxide. William Harper, professor emeritus at Princeton University, author of over 200 peer-reviewed scientific papers explained in a US Senate testimony in 2009, “Many people don’t realize that over geologic time, we are in a CO2 famine.

At least 90% of greenhouse warming is due to water vapor and clouds. Carbon dioxide is a bit player. The current warming seems to be due to natural causes, not to increasing carbon dioxide.” Atmospheric physicist Richard Lindzen, retired Alfred P. Sloan professor at M.I.T. disagreed with the notion that CO2 is the control knob for the climate. Such a belief, Lindzen said, “is pretty close to believing in magic.”

Borrowing from a once popular film title, when “The Big Carbon Fix” came to town, it should have been dubbed “Fear And Modeling In Sandpoint.”

Referred to as a “world renown climate scientist,” Steve Gahn lectured for over an hour, pointing to charts and graphs of dubious accuracy projected on a screen at the SHS auditorium in mid January to a packed house of over 250 people. Fear mongering and dire predictions were the main theme, all based on computer models which spelled doom and gloom for the planet unless we did “something.”

That “something” turned out to be the world-wide curtailment of the use of all fossil fuels.

This would have the effect of erasing centuries of human progress, thereby plunging the civilized world into darkness, starvation, and grinding poverty.

For those who can remember, this has an eerie similarity to a statement made during the Viet Nam War: “We had to destroy the village in order to save it.”

NASA climate modeler Galvin Schmidt questioned the reliability of climate models. He admitted that the “chaotic component of the climate system is not predictable beyond two weeks, even theoretically.”

Prominent physicist Freeman Dyson, a professor emeritus at The Institute For Advanced Study at Princeton University, member of the US National Academy of Scientists, has referred to climate models as “rubbish.”

What is interesting, if not altogether telling, is that climate expert Gahn could not pinpoint anywhere on the planet where the climate has actually changed. Even more interesting are some of Gahn’s direct quotes from the SHS meeting. “We can cure climate change without government.” Does Gahn actually believe everyone is willing to return to the Dark Ages without the force of law? Only a fool would not see the result of such legislation as ending in a government-toppliing world revolution. “We don’t need to abandon capitalism.” That’s correct. When all currencies collapse, we can go back to trading in sea shells. “We don’t need fossil fuels anymore.” (With our plan) “we are stopping the next Ice Age.” “It’ll take 100 years to cool the planet.” “Our goal is to reduce emissions (from fossil fuels) 45% by the year 2030 and 90% by 2050. “We need climate legislation to get past the controversy.” But didn’t Gahn just say government wasn’t needed? “Shop at a restaurant and save the planet.”

Response from a tepid environmentalist

by Tom Adair While not a charter member of the global environmental movement I do believe in sustainable living and a healthy environment. I do not believe however; that a healthy planet and economic viability are mutually exclusive points of view.

There is so much spin induced, by both sides of the environmental debate, it’s a wonder we remain firmly planted on the planet.

While not in a position to dispute Ms. Duebendorfer’s observations and having no doubt as to her sincerity, I do sometimes question the sources from which she draws her concern.

United Nations supported climate scientists have been embroiled in conflict in the past. While the veracity of suspected data manipulation claims was found, by several international investigations, to be questionable, a complete explanation of the content of e-mails providing indications of data manipulation was not, to my knowledge provided. (see “Climategate” at Wikipedia) In fairness this type of activity isn’t limited to climate change supporters. Deniers have misrepresented facts as well and perhaps more often.

While most of the published data supports atmospheric warming due to human activity, the hyperbole which surrounds and suffocates any reasonable discussion on climate change is the true enemy when trying to ascertain the facts. Simply look at the transition from global cooling to global warming to climate change and now man-made climate change to see how a mere mortal could be skeptical.

That we see hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires and dead reefs is not in question, they have always been with us. What is in question is the data and how its presented or misrepresented and how we get to the truth, a verifiable acceptable truth. The presence of humans undeniably influences their environment. I have little doubt man has had a negative effect on the planet, the fallacy is that the United States can correct or significantly alter those problems on its own. All these events have happened and will continue to happen as part of the natural world. The devastating wild fires the western United States has suffered could be caused in large part by increased carbon levels due to man’s activity.

It could also be caused by the failure of man to clear brush and fallen timber in those locations in an arguably misguided effort to not interfere with nature. Or perhaps both contributed to the problem.

Truth is we interfered with nature when we built million-dollar houses in a forest ecosystem. Once done it’s only appropriate we clear dead fall to avoid fire and protect property. But some in the environmental movement oppose that, so in many areas its simply not done, the results speak for themselves.

How many tons of carbon went into the atmosphere in those fires, how many of those fires could have been prevented?

While not an environmental or economic expert I do have a technology background. As an airborne sensor operator for United States Customs Service and its successor Customs and Border Protection as well as preforming a similar roll in the United States Navy, I was privileged to see much of the world and develop a unique perspective. From hours on top of the Deep Water Horizon disaster to leading edge hurricane damage assessment missions on several major storms, I have witnessed the problem first hand. The conclusions on economic impact and global participation are admittedly my opinion but founded, I believe, on logic and common sense as well as media reports and an interest in the data.

Naturopathic Breast Cancer Review

by Gabrielle Duebendorfer, ND I just came back from a very inspiring yearly conference in San Diego about cancer care from a naturopathic perspective that was put on by the OncANP (Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians). Over 300 physicians shared clinical experience and research and explored new options. I will share the breast cancer lecture highlights here and will expand on other ones with part two.

One of the fascinating lectures was a breast cancer (BC) review presented by my former classmate Dr. Lise Alschuler. She cited many studies that confirm the importance that dietary intake, obesity, and inflammation have on breast cancer. Processed foods, sedentary behaviors, artificial folic acid, and insulin resistance (IR) is associated with a significant increase in BC recurrence and mortality. Ultra processed foods contain high amounts of bad fats and sugar as well as low amounts of fiber and vitamins. Processing and packaging can add additives and newly formed contaminants, which can have carcinogenic and endocrine disruptor properties, such as bisphenol A. As IR causes increased inflammation, advanced BC patients with IR had a statistically significant higher risk of disease progression. One study showed that obesity increases the risk of all-cause and BC-specific mortality by approximately 30%!! This impact is worse for pre-menopausal women in general, as well as for post-menopausal women if they gain weight after BC diagnosis.

Mediterranean diet, phytoestrogens such as flax, Vitamin D, physical activity, good sleep, and natural folate (green veggies) are contributing to significantly lower risk. Alcohol is not the big villain it is commonly portrayed by oncologists. While having 1-2 drink/day increases the relative risk of BC by 10% compared to those having less one/day, in absolute terms this means an increase of only 1 % in 30 year old women and .45% in 50 year old women. 3 – 5 drinks/day actually was associated with a reduced all cause mortality!!! More than 3 drinks/day increased BC risk similarly to smoking 1 pack of cigarettes or using hormone replacement therapy. We can make healthy choices here!!

Contrary to some proponents of vegetarian or vegan diets, a systemic review/meta-analysis, neither of them showed any association with all cause or cancer mortality, even though they were associated with an 8% reduction in risk of total cancer. Obesity and inflammation due to IR are shown to be bigger factors. Interestingly, the worst dietary offender is not fat, but rather carbohydrate/protein or overall calorie intake as either affects the insulin effect on inflammation and cancer proliferation. Every hour beyond a 13 hour overnight fast decreases the risk of dying from BC, with the best effect with a dinner of 1/3 of the total days’ calories. The good European habit of having lunch be the biggest meal has had an inherently healthy effect! “The Longevity Diet” by longtime researcher Dr. Valter Longo is a valuable resource here. Of course there are many other herbs and supplements that can stabilize blood sugar, one of which is cinnamon, which was shown to reduce fasting blood glucose similar to metformin.

Besides dietary aspects, sleep, Vitamin D, and physical activity contributes significantly to reduction of inflammation. Vigorous rather than moderate exercise is most important after BC diagnosis especially for post-menopausal women. This effect requires “prolonged activity”, i.e. getting up at least once per hour! Post-menopausal women who are obese after BC diagnosis benefit the most from this.

There are many specific herbal and nutrient interventions that are important here, like mushrooms, various bioflavonoids, and copper levels. I just want to point out research with aspirin use to lower risk for BC specific mortality, as it has been confusing to say the least. As it stands today it MAY lower risk.

Considering long-term potential disturbance to the GI tract, one might want to consider other ways to reduce inflammatory markers, such as Mediterranean diet, fish oil, flax seeds, ginger, garlic, broccoli, and other various herbs and supplements Like I reported last year, the evidence for social isolation and mortality due to BC is very high. In fact it is an independent risk factor for mortality. According to one study of almost 10,000 women, those with smaller social networks had a 43% higher risk recurrence and 64% increased risk of BC-specific mortality and 69% increased risk of total mortality!! Good sleep and a felt sense of happiness significantly reduce risk recurrence. Melatonin, good sleep hygiene/aids, adaptogenic herbs, such as ginseng, exercise, as well as various mindfulness practices play a big role here.

Maybe the best closing words are from the panel discussing the elephant in the room, i.e. the potential of death. As naturopathic physicians we can take the time to put the oncologist’s prognosis into perspective. Statistics represent the average people and there are always exceptional patients.

What is important is to ask the question whether you are living your best life now.

Pend Oreille Chapter of Idaho Master NaturalistsBy Cindy Wolcott The mission of the Idaho Master Naturalist Program is to develop a group of well-informed volunteers to actively work towards the stewardship of Idaho’s natural environment.

That statement actually has a different meaning for each member, with the unifying purpose being to care for our natural world and Idaho in particular.

In 2007 Idaho Fish & Game (IDFG) introduced the program to the state of Idaho. It has grown to 8 chapters statewide.

New members complete 40 hours of classroom and field training, plus several volunteer hours. The training can vary, but centers around fish, wildlife, plants, water, geology, conservation, ecology and natural history. To certify in following years each member completes 40 hours of volunteer work, plus 8 hours of continuing education. You may also remain a member without certifying each year. This group is open to anyone who enjoys and appreciates Idaho’s natural world, regardless of physical fitness.

The Pend Oreille Chapter has contributed 17,500 volunteer hours since its formation in 2011. Many of those hours are from volunteering at the Waterlife Discovery Center (WDC) on Lakeshore Drive, or the ‘old fish hatchery.’ Naturalists on Duty or NODS staff the WDC through the summer. This year’s hours are Monday – Friday, 9am – 1pm. The WDC is such a gem in our community. There is a wetland trail with interpretive signs, a pond with viewing windows, the hatchery manager’s home has been made over into a science center, plus many other displays and activities.

The grounds are open from dawn to dusk. It’s a great place to picnic, relax or bring out of town guests.As far as other volunteer opportunities, IDFG has many projects that the Master Naturalists help with. Clark Fork Delta project, Kokanee Spawning, Picking up fish eggs at the airport to be transported to Cabinet Gorge Fish Hatchery, to name a few. We have Memorandums Of Understanding with many groups in our area, KLT, Trout Unlimited, Kinnikinnick Native Plant Society, Idaho State Parks, Kootenai NWR, to name a few. Volunteering with any of these entities count as volunteer hours.

This dynamic group is starting new membership classes on Friday, March 22, & Saturday March 23, 2018. After that, classes are mainly on Thursdays and Saturdays. Selkirk Grizzly Bear DNA Recovery Project On Saturday, February 23rd, 2019 the Kinnikinnick Native Plant Society and City of Sandpoint Parks and Recreation Department will present: Don Gay: “Selkirk Grizzly Bear DNA project” This project has been gathering grizzly bear hair from collection sites in the Selkirk Mountains since 2015. DNA analysis of the hair provides information on grizzly bear reproduction and gene flow with surrounding recovery areas. This information is used by researchers to determine the minimum number of grizzly bears in the U.S. portion of the Selkirk Recovery area and if that number is approaching bear recovery goals. Don is a retired U.S. Forest Service wildlife biologist.

He spent time working on the Kootenai, Deschutes, Fremont, and Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forests. He also served in Africa with the Peace Corps and completed international work with the Forest Service in Mali, Madagascar and Gabon. Don lives in Naples, Idaho.

Sandpoint Farmers Market for All Things Home Grown by Kris McPeek, Sandpoint Lavendar Farm

As spring begins to roll around, I can’t help but look forward to Saturdays and Wednesdays at the Farmer’s Market At Sandpoint. I look forward to the market because I find joy in sharing my fresh lavender, lavender plants and products with the local community. From early mornings harvesting to long afternoons processing, I find a sense of pride and joy in my work and sharing with our locals and out-of-town guests alike.

The Farmer’s Market At Sandpoint offers a large assortment of vendors, including delicious food and locally handmade arts and crafts by some very talented artisans. Our proud farmers grow and farm all of their food locally within 100 miles of Sandpoint and are happy to talk to anyone who needs information about their products and practices. But not only does the Farmer’s Market provide for healthy and delicious food and wonderful crafts, it is also a place for people to come and listen to fantastic music presented by local and out of the area musicians for everyone’s enjoyment. Another great aspect of the Farmer’s Market is it is also a place to socialize and get caught up with friends in the community, there is nothing like a warm summer’s day sitting on the grass in Farmin Park with an ice cold drink, some delicious fresh food listening to great music and catching up with a friend or just people watching.

My experience as a vendor has been nothing but positive. I love this community that we live in and am always happy to meet new and old customers year after year. I love their enthusiasm for the Farmer’s Market and enjoy educating them about my farm. It is also very interesting to hear about their experiences with growing lavender and how they use essential oil and hydrosol. I remember a customer who bought two of my sachets a few years ago. She came back the following weekend and bought two more. She said what made them special was that they were “home grown”. To me that is what the Farmer’s Market is all about, a sense of pride and love of everything “home grown”.

Pickle-on-a-Stick and Other Fermented Delicacies by Kathy Osborne

Last September I had the unequaled pleasure of attending the Sandpoint Renaissance Faire. This event was so much fun! From the time I walked onto the grounds through the jousting event, I felt I had a front row seat to what it must have been like back in the day. But I have to admit the pickle –on-a-stick guy had me baffled. From what I could see he was doing a booming business and while I do like a good dilly, it just seemed so strange to me that this would be part of the daily cuisine. But it turns out that the crunchy, sloppy, juicy veggie has indeed been around for more than 5,000 years. So it very likely did appear to tempt the taste buds of the crowd at the joust in years gone by.

As early as 2500 B.C. the preservation of foods in salted brines and vinegars was quite common in early Mesopotamia. Cucumbers native to India were being pickled in the Tigris Valley as early as 2030 B. C. and are even credited with keeping sailors scurvy free on long voyages.

For Jews living in Eastern Europe, pickles became an especially important addition to their diet. It’s sharp, acid flavor helped to spice the bland bread and potato diets that were common in countries with long winters. However, Kosher dills weren’t the only food pickled in Poland, the Ukraine, and Russia. It was also common to pickle beets and shredded cabbage as well.

These pickled vegetables were allowed to ferment for about a month and then they were sealed in barrels and moved to dark cellars. Pickling them in this manner allowed the pickled vegetable to last throughout the entire winter.* In addition to cucumbers, beets, garlic, and green beans, and cabbagecarrots are often pickled. While fermenting foods in crocks remains popular, jars are used more often these days. The process is much faster and less messy, made possible with the invention of canning jars in 1858 thanks to Mr. John Mason of Philadelphia.

Fermented foods in general are enjoying a trend in popularity as many in the health industry have determined them good for gut health. Fermented foods can be anything from bananas to zucchini. It really is up to the individual and has become even easier with the availability of pickling jars designed to release the oxygen from the jar contents over time instead of exposing the jars to pressure or water bath canning.

BCSA to Host 8th Annual Brownells/NRA Youth Day at the Range

The Bonner County Sportsmen’s association (BCSA) has come a long way since the first Daughter’s Day at the Range back in 2012. From 34 females participating, to now over 100 youth, boys and girls, the program has grown in size and popularity. The 8th Annual weekend for youth shooters age 8-18 will be held June 15 and 16th, 2019 (Father’s Day Weekend), at the City of Sandpoint Outdoor Range, donated by the City for the event. Over 40 adult volunteers will be helping with everything from food and registration to the Safety program, and one on one instruction at the range. Youth are introduced to the fun, excitement, and safety involved in shooting .22’s, and parents participate in both the safety class, and by being observers when their child shoots. Last year 109 youth participated, and signups for the two hour classes (4 held each day) has begun. This event is sponsored by Brownells/NRA Day, hosted by the Bonner County Sportsmen’s Assn., and Sandpoint Parks & Recreation. Additional thanks go to Idaho Dept. of Fish and Game, National Rifle Association: Women on Target, Brownells, North 40 Outfitters, Co-Op Country Store, and many local gun shops and businesses for their support.

Volunteer Work On Forest Service Trails Benefit Many Users

Back in the day, the Forest Service sported a budget that put hundreds of people to work each summer building, clearing and fixing the National Trail System. However, the Forest Service now faces greatly reduced budgets focused more on essential services and less on recreation, and trails fall under recreation.

But, recreation is a big part of life in the US, particularly in the West. In spite of what Congressional budget makers think, the public still wants trails to be cleared and well kept, and the Forest Service is turning more and more to volunteers for help.

There are many groups nationwide who line up volunteers to help with this, including the Pacific Crest Trail Association, the National Wilderness Stewardship Alliance, Southern Appalachian Wilderness Stewards, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and Back Country Horsemen of America (BCHA).

In the local area, trail stewards include Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness (FSPW), Idaho Trails Association (ITA), Pend Oreille Pedalers, Cabinet Resource Group (CRG), Cabinet Ridge Riders, Libby Nordic Club, local BCHA clubs and Troy Snowmobile Club.

These groups help maintain trails for a variety of uses, from off-road summer travel to Wilderness trails for unmechanized human and stock travel.

What these trails have in common is that without volunteers, many would be gone.

“We put a crew out every summer to help keep trails open to the public,” said FSPW trail crew leader Sandy Compton.” We get a lot done, and we have a lot of fun doing it,” FSPW focuses on the Scotchman Peaks between Sandpoint, Idaho and Troy, Montana. ITA has projects all over Idaho. CRG funds an intern who works in the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness. The Pedalers work on mountain bike trails, mostly in the Selkirks. Snowmobile and ORV users take care of their routes.

“Lots of folks have a favorite trail and a favorite way to enjoy it,” said Compton. “If everyone who uses trails put in one day a year working on their favorite, we would have an incredible trail system. by The Motley Fool, many of us overlook one of the key benefits of having a Health Savings Account (HSA). In most instances, HSA accounts are used as a tax-advantaged way to save for future medical expenses but few are aware they can also be used to supplement retirement savings.

First of all, to be eligible for an HSA, your health insurance policy must be a high deductible health plan. This is a plan with a deductible of $1,350 or more for individuals and $2,700 or more for a family. Once you are enrolled in the health plan, you can now open an HSA account with your bank and start contributing funds. If your employer is offering the health insurance plan, your company may set up an HSA for you as an employee benefit.

Up to $3,500 may be contributed to an HSA by single adults and up to $7,000 for a family. Adults 55 and older are allowed another $1,000 in catch up contributions. These limits may change from year to year and so might the minimum health insurance deductible required to qualify for an HSA. You are able to contribute up to the annul HSA limit every year from the time you open the account until you become eligible for Medicare at age 65, as long as you keep your high deductible health plan.

Any after-tax money you contribute can be deducted from your taxable income for the year. If your employer’s health insurance plan comes with an HSA option, you may be able to contribute pre-tax dollars directly to your HSA and your employer may match some of your contributions. However, the total contributions that you and your employer make to your account cannot exceed the annual contribution limits.

Unlike flexible spending accounts (FSAs), money in your HSA rolls over from year to year, so you keep it until you need to spend it. You can also take your HSA with you if you leave your current job, though you won’t be able to make any new contributions unless you keep your high-deductible health plan.

You’re allowed to take distributions from your HSA at any age as long as you use it for a qualified medical expense -- paying for hospital bills, prescription medications, specialist visits, and other medical costs.

And the best part is you won’t pay any taxes on these withdrawals. For this reason, it’s a great place to stash emergency cash to help you cover out-ofpocket costs you incur if you become seriously injured or ill. You can also save the money for planned medical expenses, like pregnancy and childbirth, non-emergency surgeries, long-term care, and treatment for mental health or substance abuse.

But HSAs have another benefit for seniors that few realize. Once you turn 65, you can use your HSA funds for non-medical expenses too, though you will pay income tax on these withdrawals. You can also make non-medical withdrawals if you’re under 65, but you’ll pay a 20% penalty, making this a rarely desirable option.

Another benefit to HSAs. Once you turn 65, the HSA becomes similar to a traditional IRA or 401(k), but unlike those retirement accounts, HSAs have no required minimum distributions (RMDs). The government requires you to begin taking these distributions from all retirement accounts except Roth IRAs by age 70 1/2 to ensure that it gets its tax cut of your earnings.

The amount you are required to withdraw will depend on your age and the value of your retirement accounts. The problem with RMDs is that they can force you to take out more than you want, pushing your taxable income into a higher income tax bracket. But not taking RMDs is not an option unless you want to pay a 50% penalty on the amount you should have taken out.

You won’t have to worry about any of this if you keep your money in an HSA. Your money can sit tax-deferred for as long as you want it to, and distributions for qualified medical expenses will still be tax-free, even after you can no longer make contributions to the account.

It’s a good idea to contribute at least as much as your health insurance deductible to your HSA, even if you don’t plan on using it for retirement savings. This way, if an unexpected medical expense arises, you can cover it without pulling out your credit card to meet your deductible before insurance kicks in. But for small medical expenses, you may prefer to pay out of pocket, letting your HSA savings continue to grow for bigger costs down the road.

An HSA can be a great supplement to your other retirement savings accounts, but you must evaluate its terms carefully. If your account enables you to invest your money in mutual funds, it also charges expense ratios.

These are annual fees that all shareholders pay, and they can hamper your money’s growth. Look at the prospectus for the funds you’re invested in to see how much you’re paying in fees. If it’s more than 1% of your assets each year, your HSA may not be the most efficient retirement savings vehicle

for you. Consider moving your money to more affordable investments, like index funds, or not investing your HSA funds at all and contributing the bulk of your retirement savings to a 401(k) or IRA instead.

You can set up automatic deposits to your HSA from your paycheck if your employer allows this, or budget a certain dollar amount each month that you would like to contribute. Keep an eye on the contribution limits each year and don’t exceed them, or else you’ll pay income tax and a 6% excise tax on the excess.

With all of the tax benefits, there’s no reason not to open an HSA if you’re eligible for one. But like all of your retirement savings accounts, you should evaluate the HSA thoroughly so you understand what you’re getting and what the account may cost you.

The Business Model That Sets Us Apart The Cooperative Model

Every business hoping to succeed in this increasingly competitive world knows it must set itself apart from the competition at the beginning. There must be something truly unique, some added value, some thing that other like businesses just don’t offer. Sometimes, that difference is as simple as a business model, like a cooperative.

Co-ops are not hard to find across the nation and they come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and products being promoted. Wherever a group of like-minded business savvy individuals decide to band together and create a platform for advertising their wares and getting them to market, a cooperative is born. It can be artists, home school groups, farm co-ops, grocery store co-ops, milk production co-ops and even co-ops for child care. The sky is the limit.

At the CO-OP Gas & Supply Co., Inc, we are in our 85th consecutive year of business. First created as a farm cooperative, the CO-OP has become much more. Where before mostly large producers were allowed to buy voting stock in the company, now almost any small producer can join just by filling out the paperwork, purchasing one share of common stock, and intending to make a profit in the agriculture / timber arena through their business. One share of common stock gives the owner the right to participate at the Annual Meeting and vote on important issues.

We are very proud that for the first time this year the CO-OP Gas & Supply will be offering two scholarships to local students. And we are also able to offer 4-H livestock project members an even better feed incentive program.

The Inland Northwest log market is weak with numerous mills curtailing log purchases due to high inventories, although a few companies continue to buy logs at modest prices. Underpinning the weak log market is a lumber market in the doldrums, with prices generally running about 25% lower than the same time last year. Nationally Home Sales Decline – Not So in North Idaho Jim Haynes, Associate Broker Following is a plot of the number of homes sold monthly for 2018 as compared to the corresponding month of 2017: Number of Existing Home Sales, Percent Change Year-Over-Year 2017 to 2018 2.0%

Idaho was the fastest growing state in the country from July 1, 2016 to July 1, 2017 and the second fastest growing state in the country from July 1, 2017 to July 1, 2018 according to the US Census Bureau. In addition, according to the National Association or Realtors Confidence Index Survey, Idaho is one of only four states nationally with a Strong Buyer Traffic Index.

This indicates that the buyers looking for a home to purchase are looking at Idaho. Finally, the median home price in 2018 was $259,100 for the entire country. However, for the western region of the US the median home sales price was $384,700 in 2018. Though prices are increasing robustly in North Idaho (median home sales price in 2018 of $290,000) they are still a bargain when compared to the rest of the western region.

As one can see for eleven of the twelve months of 2018 the sales of homes in the US were less than the corresponding month of 2017. One can also see that the decline in home sales accelerates in the later half of 2018. This does not paint a very good picture for home sales in the US. As the first chart would suggest there was an overall decrease in the number of homes sold nationally from 2017 to 2018. Overall that decrease was 3.1%. At the same time there was an increase of 7.1% in the three northern counties of Idaho.

The chart illustrates that the median home sales price increased each month when compared to the same month one year earlier. That said, the trend is declining which means that the rate of housing price increases nationally is slowing. Over the last year in the US, median home sales prices rose 4.8%, while median prices in North Idaho rose more than twice that amount, to 11.6%, indicating that the real estate market in our area is much healthier than the national market.

Summary Nationally, eleven out of twelve months saw a decrease in the number of homes sold in 2018 versus the same month in 2017. In the three northern Idaho counties that number is reversed. Ten out of twelve months experienced an increase in the number of north Idaho homes sold on a yearover-year basis.
