Different and Getting Better

As I write this on February 27th, it is snowing. It should be snowing.

This is February and we still have another three weeks until the Spring Equinox. Even at that time we can, and often do, still have winter like weather on through April. One year we got 6” of snowy hail the weekend of Lost in the 50’s mid May. It can and does happen.

I am a gardener and while I do love the holiday season, when January 1st comes ‘round I am ready to put something, anything, in the ground. So the few warm sunny days we have had of late have allow ed me to indulge my dreams for spring by standing in the sun with a cup of coffee and imagining the garden to come. This down time really is important because when garden weather actually arrives there is no going back. Full speed ahead!

In this issue of the Round Up you will find some useful information not only for gardening but other things to do and places to visit in the surrounding area. As COVID restrictions are relaxed and it is safer to gather and move around you and your family may wish to visit local farms and gardens. Find our Local Producer List on page 19. Be sure to call first and see if visitor season is open.

Over on page 6 you will find a poster for the Home & Garden Show happening in early April at the Bonner County Fairgrounds. This show is always a winner and this year is supporting the Bonner Community Food Bank.

On page 3 you will find our updated list for George’s Annual Tree and Shrub Sale set for Friday April 29, 2022. A more complete list will be available on our website on March 14th. We are really looking forward to this event!

The CO-OP Gas & Supply Annual Meeting of the Membership will be held on March 12, 2022 at the CO-OP Propane & Marketing Annex. Please see adjacent ad.

We have within these pages articles on horsemanship, weed issues, and some great things happening at the museum. So much to do!

So while things remain a bit different,they are getting better. People are meeting to enjoy the company of friends and family again. And soon, it will be gardening time. Enjoy that remaining coffee time amid the snow flakes as we wait for better weather to arrive!

March’s full Moon, the Worm Moon, reaches peak illumination on Friday, March 18, 2022, at 3:20 A.M. EDT. Look for it in the evening of Thursday, March 17, as the Moon rises above the horizon!

In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb You may have heard the weather proverb, “If March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb,” which means that if the month starts off stormy, it will end with mild weather. There is, however, a different interpretation: The constellation Leo, the lion, rises in the east at the beginning of March and thus the month “comes in like a lion,” while Aries, the ram, sets in the west at the end of the month, and hence, the month “will go out like a lamb.” Now you know.

The Start of Spring The March equinox occurs on Sunday, March 20, 2022. In the Northern Hemisphere, this is known as the vernal, or spring, equinox and marks the start of the spring season. In the Southern Hemisphere, autumn begins.

Essence of Idaho Potatoes a Fragrance Hit

The hot potato in the fragrance world wasn’t made by Chanel, Chloe or Guerlain, but it is French — sort of. Frites by Idaho packs the odor of a fresh order of french fries made, of course, from Idaho potatoes.

The name “Frites” is the French word for fries.The sizzling scent was never intended to be a money maker. Travis Blacker, the Idaho Potato Commission’s industry relations director, said his organization priced it at $1.89 per 1.7-ounce bottle to sell for the rough equivalent of an order of fries.

The IPC produced a limited quantity of Frites by Idaho, making it as in demand as the last fry in the bottom of a bag. According to the IPC, it sold out before they had a chance to officially launch their promotion.

The IPC boasts that its scent was “formulated from essential oils and distilled Idaho potatoes to embody the irresistible essence of potatoes from Idaho.”

The fine print on the IPC’s website warns shipments may be delayed by four to six weeks due to high demand. That’s no surprise to the IPC’s leaders, who are tasked with promoting the Idaho potato brand.

In their market research, they found 90 percent of Americans surveyed are crazy about the smell of hot french fries.

“It keeps the Idaho potato on the mind of the consumer,” Blacker said. “Our job is to make sure when people think of potatoes, they automatically think of Idaho potatoes. I think this just helps with that.”

Blacker said Frites by Idaho was released before Valentine’s Day, and within the state’s spud industry, February doubles as Potato Lovers Month.

“It’s been funny to see how this (fragrance) has just taken off,” Blacker said.

IPC staff and officials with their advertising agencies came up with the idea during a brainstorming session last April. Staff members formulated several recipes, choosing three finalists, and the top one was selected.

All of the product development, production and bottling was done in-house.

“It was like, ‘OK, this is hilarious. Why not do this during Idaho Potato Lovers Month.’

That’s when we want to stimulate demand, but also there’s Valentine’s Day,” said Jeweldean Hull, the IPC’s administrative and social media director. “Timing is everything.

Who would have thought? We’re not perfume makers.”

Hull said the group initially tested recipes with cooking oil to lend their product authenticity, but they soon determined greasy fries wouldn’t go over. The end result is slightly sweet but also distinctly potato — Idaho russet to be specific.

“I feel like it was the best we could do in the inspiration of french fries,” Hull said.

“When you’re driving in that drive-thru, you bet the minute you get that bag of fries and you have a burger or whatever, you’re going to grab a french fry.”

After giving several bottles away, the IPC listed 60 bottles for sale on their website. An additional batch of the product also sold out immediately.

Hull said there’s been no determination about whether or not to ramp up production to try to meet the exceptional demand, but she noted National French Fry Day is July 13.

“Literally, it’s like family members helping us to put this together,” Hull said. “This isn’t like we called Chanel to help us.”

Despite the limited inventory, Frites by Idaho has made an international splash.

One caller from Switzerland assured the IPC that the essence of Idaho potatoes could hold the key to world peace, Hull said.

“We’re getting calls constantly from people looking for this perfume,” Hull said.

Sen. Julie VanOrden, R-Pingree, who also serves on the Idaho Potato Commission, said the idea of making a potato fragrance came up several times during discussions throughout the past half year.

“I’m like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me!’”

VanOrden said.

VanOrden credits the IPC staff with devising great ideas and promotions amid the COVID-19 pandemic, such as the fragrance, and with effectively getting Idaho potatoes featured on social media and recipe sites.

VanOrden hasn’t managed to score a bottle of Frites by Idaho for herself yet, and she said she’s reserving judgment on the french fry fragrance until she smells it.

Then again, she acknowledges the fragrance has certainly made Idaho potatoes a hot topic lately, which is the point of the promotion, after all.

By Chase Youngdahl, Bonner County Weeds Manager Moving towards the spring equinox, I tend to glance at a sunrise/sun- year’s noxious weeds programs and resources in Bonner County. set calendar on a frequent basis. When conditions are cold and gray Field season is around the corner. for so long, seeing the rapid increase in daylight seems to help—not only in actuality, but also on a calendar for the days and weeks ahead.

It’s a habit that I would recommend. Spring (and summer) never gets here fast enough—but it does get here, and seeing tangible reminders helps the process along. The land will come out of the dormant state of hibernation and the urge to scratch the itch of getting our hands and equipment dirty will be satisfied…soon enough.

Whether you’re farming, gardening, landscaping or trying to maintain a clean gravel parking pad, you’ve likely had encounters with this Weed of the Month: Quackgrass (Elytrigia repens). It’s a rhizomatous perennial grass that’s widespread across the northern tier of the United States, and can be found to some degree on nearly every plot of land in Bonner County. It’s not a noxious weed in Idaho, as it would be unrealistic to require landowners to control something that we would not even be able to meet containment goals on. It is, however, on the NAISMA (North American Invasive Species Management Association) list of prohibited weeds for the Weed Free Forage & Straw program.

This is probably due to the fact that Quackgrass is listed as a noxious weed in some of the hotter, drier states, where population levels are low to moderate, and NAISMA is the national certification standard. If you’re growing a crop with the intent to receive a national weed free certification, it has to be free of Quackgrass, as well as 20 other weeds on the NAISMA list [in addition to the 53 terrestrial noxious weeds in Idaho]. Quackgrass can be a host for diseases in cereal crops; leaf rusts, smuts, etc. So it can certainly have economic impacts in areas where these particular crops are grown for large scale production.

Paradoxically, it is actually desirable forage for pasture animals, which is a good thing because trying to kill a perennial grass out of a stand of other perennial grasses is a headache. Whether or not Quackgrass can be tolerated on a site is going to depend on what the management objectives are. A parking lot or driveway turnaround, for example, is going to be managed differently than a pasture or a grass hay field.

Identifying grasses is tricky, it can come down to the minutest of details. Quackgrass does have a couple of distinct features that can assure you of its identity. The leaf blades have a crimp near the tips; a characteristic unique to Quackgrass. That’s a clue that can be detected at any phase during its lifecycle. BCGA Spring Plant Sale Scheduled

The Bonner County Gardeners Association is happy to welcome the 2022 Membership class. In spite of the challenges of COVID, the organization is presenting the course by innovation and flexibility. Classes are a mix of collaboration with the University of Idaho Master Gardeners course, zoom classes and in-person classroom experiences.

The popular BCGA Plant Sale is again slated for May 6th, from 9 to 5, and May 7th from 9am to 2pm, as part of Mother’s Day weekend.

Be sure to mark your calendar. There will be myriad vegetable starts, many of which are unusual or hard to find, perennial ornamental plants, berry starts, and unique gifts for Mother or oneself. BCGA members will be standing by to answer questions and help with selection. All plants are grown by members with loving care and attention. Come visit us at the parking lot of the Ponderay Event Center and enjoy the interesting array of plants to adopt for your own garden.

March is for Planning With rising produce prices, more people are growing their own. Eagerness to get started sometimes trumps wisdom, and a few warm days can trick us into thinking it is okay to start planting vegetable seeds in the garden. Remember, it is soil temperature more than air temperature that determines successful germination of seeds. Seeds are expensive, so it is best not to waste them. A soil thermometer is useful in judging when to plant. March is for planning, not planting, unless one is starting seeds in a heated space.

Grab a pencil and paper to start planning. Sketch a diagram of your garden space with the beds, rows, or designated growing areas. Make a few copies of this sketch. Now, remember where you had various crops last year and write them in. Save this record. Did you plant too much of something, or not enough? Did you run out of space with the cooler season plants and not have enough room for things that like warmer weather? Did some crops suffer from pests? Now, take another copy of the garden diagram and start thinking about where to plant this year.

Something to consider to make the most of your ongoing garden is crop rotation. Your previous garden layout sketches come in handy here. Crop rotation is the practice of moving crops to different garden beds each year. If one grows the same crop in the same place year after year, nutrients may be over consumed, or pests that favor a certain type of plant could winter over and get a head start in the spring. A three year rotation (or more) works quite well. Some basic families of plants to rotate are: cucumber family, including squash, pumpkins and melons; cole crops—cabbage, kale, cauliflower, broc-

coli, brussel sprouts; Tomato family, which includes peppers, eggplant, potatoes, and tomatillos; alliums—garlic, onions, leeks; legumes, such as peas and beans; and miscellaneous, carrots, beets, lettuce, spinach and other. This concept seems complicated, but it is fun to spend a winter day deciding where to plant each crop.

Other considerations in planning the garden are how many of each vegetable one needs, and insuring that the space is adequate for each crop. Perennial crops such as asparagus, rhubarb, herbs, and berries need a permanent space and are best situated away from the annual vegetables.

Now, make a plan and stick to it. Later, when planting, the diagram will save time, as the decisions are clearly made ahead of time. Be sure to save all diagrams year over year to consult in the future. Your garden will thank you with better yields and fewer problems.

Too many training situations (out of human convenience) have a standardized feeding program, use the same equipment on all horses, and use repetitive riding techniques. A set program can be unforgiving towards the individual horse that does not comply. Consequences for the “difficult” or resistant horse is they become increasingly fearful, insecure, and distrustful of humans. After being brought home, the owner realizes their horse has more issues now than when it started.

Some common questions I am asked from those seeking horse help that previous trainer(s) never fully addressed: Owner comment (OC): “I’m not completely comfortable riding him.

He’s never bucked; the trainer kept telling me he is fine, and I needed to work him harder, but that does not help him relax.”

My Interpretation (MI): His mental concern is reflected in his increasing physical tension; he had been forced to yield his body without his mind ever addressed. Despite not having done anything yet, everything asked of him is adding to his fear. At some point, if not ridden in a forceful “making him comply” manner he will physically explode.

OC: “He was easy to catch before, but after his training, I’m having a much more difficult time interacting with him.”

MI: The training that occurred did not increase his confidence. As a form of self-preservation, to avoid future concerning human experiences, he is displaying defensive behavior, such as being difficult to catch.

OC: “He is sweet, but he is always rubbing on me. When I ride, he abruptly stops to scratch his face. He does get stronger on the bit the longer I ride. The last trainer said I should lunge him more and use a stronger bit.”

MI: Before the ride, the horse is spatially dominating your personal space to protect him. His abrupt halts and rubbing when ridden reflect his physical tension and emotional stress. The leaning on the bit reflects his defensiveness towards physical pressure, limiting your ability to first influence his thought and then his movement.

OC: “He’s a bit fussy about saddling, steps away from it, and moves forward when I try to mount. He is also difficult to keep standing still, but otherwise, he’s fine.”

MI: Anticipation, defensiveness, and potential pain problems contributing to saddling and mounting “issues.” Continuous agitation, biting at everything, the inability to stand, lack of focus, walking through pressure, herd participation dysfunction, ongoing tension, difficulty keeping weight on, lack of lying down for REM state of sleep, and additional symptoms can all reflect a horse in pain.

Here are suggestions for researching an equine professional before sending your horse to them: *Audit- visit in person and watch multiple horses handled. Listen to the trainer teach numerous students. Is it done in a manner you can understand?

*Despite potentially being a quality horseman, can they communicate how, what, when, and why they are doing something with the horse? *Ask Questions- get familiar with their training philosophies, approaches, teaching style, and assess if it is a one-size-fits-all program or adapted to the individual. *Visually Inspect- Do the horses at their facility seem healthy and relaxed? *Are there turn-out or herd interaction opportunities? *Are the facilities kept to a standard you feel is safe? *Is quality hay fed? What supplements are offered/fed, or do you need to supply them? *How much time will the trainer be spending with your horse? *Will anyone else be working or handling your horse? *Does the trainer work with a farrier, bodyworker, vet., etc., who share a common approach to interacting with horses? *Is the trainer clear on your goals, future intentions, and current abilities? *How and when will you get updates regarding the horse’s progress? *Will you be able to watch when your horse is worked with? *How many sessions will the trainer spend working with you and your horse before you take the equine home? *How does the trainer decide how long the horse should stay? *Will there be interruptions in the training progression? *Will the trainer assess if your tack fits the horse and is appropriate for your abilities? *Will the trainer offer ongoing lessons or support to continue you and the horse’s progression after he has returned home? *Is there a training contract (that you have read thoroughly) outlining all specific fees?

Notice if at any point the trainer becomes hostile, avoidant, disrespectful, belittling, less-than forthright during your questions, or resistant to letting you watch them work. Their behavior and attitude reflect how the future treatment of the equine and you will be.

Too many owners get pressured or bullied by the professional and then are hurt by their horse for not trusting their instinct when they felt something was not right. Remember, you are your horse’s voice. Even if a scenario initially seemed like a good match, you always have the option to remove your horse if it becomes an unhealthy environment.

Long-Covid As An Opportunity

facilitates a relaxation response, but also increases blood flow and induces more oxygen uptake in the tissues, particularly in the brain.

This is much easier learned and applied than a recently reported noninvasive brain stimulation method that restored normal blood flow to the brain and thus improved cognitive and visual symptoms.

Generally, if the above approaches and basic immune support have been applied, most common neurological, muscular, cardio-vascular, respiratory, and digestive COVID-19 symptoms can be prevented or relieved. For more persistent and severe symptoms, which can show up in all organ systems, more individualized evaluation and support is indicated.

Musculo-skeletal symptoms all point towards a chronic inflammatory response to viral infections similar to EBV or Lyme in form of chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia. We treat this similarly with alternations of frequent, low dose anti-viral treatments, adrenal and brain support, supportive dietary measures, hydro-therapy, massage and lymphatic drainage.

Persistent neurological symptoms might be due to neurovascular inflammation in the brain. Naturopathically, we individualize anti-inflammatory, immune modulating, and nervous system-calming diet, herbs and supplements. More medically inclined practitioners might prescribe allergy medicines or the anti-depressant Fluvoxamin, though that has potential side-effects of acute anxiety and violent, suicidal behavior! However, if neurological or respiratory symptoms are lingering from previous severe COVID-19 illness, there might be clotting problems or remnants of unresolved COVID-19 pneumonia including possible lung fibrosis that need to be evaluated and treated.

Aside from addressing these more serious Long-COVID symptoms, the illustrated approaches give a good picture of what naturopathic medicine is all about. We welcome symptoms of Long-COVID as messengers that can tell us where there are underlying weaknesses.

We then evaluate them and support appropriately, taking dis-ease as an opportunity for deeper healing.

Coming back to the “Bear Like” documentary, a better translation of the title might be “The Bear Within Me”. This better expresses that, just like David got to know these scary creatures in the outside world, he also developed this bear energy within himself. Being willing to face fear in form of illness, being willing to come close and get to know it intimately, enables us to respond appropriately. In the process we can discover an inner strength that gives the resource to open to life in a deeper, more connective, and joyful manner. Do yourself the favor and look at the movie – it is very inspiring.

I always get greatly inspired by the yearly Banff Film Festivals. In the movie “Bear Like”, David Bittner exquisitely explores the intimacy that arises when one is patient enough to gradually get closer and closer to something that is very scary – like Grizzly Bears in Alaska. Fear generally keeps one from openly exploring what is true in the moment and in the process prevents new learning as well as intimacy with life.

One of the last fear aspects of this epidemic is Long-COVID as studies are quite contradictory and vaccine mandate proponents are exaggerating the risk as a motivation to get vaccinated. In fact, LongCOVID can also result from mild breakthrough infection, though likely at a lesser rate than in the unvaccinated. Incidence predictions range from 4% to 66% due to poor definition and differentiation from other syndromes amongst other reasons, indicating that we simply don’t know yet.

A strong vital force and healthy immune response generally clears out any remaining virus or particles within 2 weeks, efficiently shutting down the infectious process and leading to resolution and memory immunity. This is primarily facilitated by T regulatory cells that are produced by a healthy microbiome (balanced gut flora), which also reduces potential COVID-19 virus reservoirs in the gut and leaky gut syndrome, preventing chronic low grade immune irritation. The best support for a healthy microbiome consists of an anti-inflammatory diet with lots of fiber and healthy bacteria. With Long-Covid on the other hand, the immune system continues to be dysregulated for a long time as the virus or remaining particles are not fully cleared. A continuous cycle of inflammatory cytokine production cause fatigue, anxiety, and pain, which causes more cytokine production. A recent Italian study contributes fatigue, difficulty breathing, and joint pain to this dysregulation of cytokine. A large Lancet study, though suffering from limitations, showed that the risk for LongCOVID is much lower in people who weren’t hospitalized, that only 5 % suffer more than 12 weeks after infection and that most symptoms drastically dropping off after 12 months.

Herman Taylor Remembered for Idaho Supreme Court Service by Helen Newton Most long-time residents recognize the name Stephen Bistline, a colorful local attorney who served on the Idaho Supreme Court from 1976 to 1994. But, did you know that from 1925 to 1929, another Sandpoint attorney had also served on the Idaho Supreme Court?

Born in Wisconsin in 1877, Herman Taylor came to Sandpoint in 1902 immediately after his graduation from law school.

One of the city’s first attorneys, Taylor quickly acquired a large practice and became one of the most eminent members of the bar in northern Idaho. During his long years of residence here, he took an active part in community life, in business, politics and society. He served as city attorney for some time. He was a member of Elks lodge here, having been on the committee which organized the local chapter and he was its first Exalted Ruler.

He was a member of the district draft board and organized Company B of the Third Regiment of the Home Guard of which he became captain.

Taylor had a long record of public service including as state senator from Kootenai county where he was instrumental in securing the passage of bills dividing old Kootenai county and later Bonner County into Bonner and Boundary counties.

While serving two terms as lieutenant governor he was the author of the prohibition law which placed Idaho in the ranks of dry states long before the entire nation approved the Volstead Act. In 1916 he was a candidate on the Republican ticket in the primaries for governor but was defeated by D. W. Davis who then lost to Moses Alexander.

In 1922 Taylor was appointed to the bench of the 8th judicial district here and while in that position he was appointed to a vacancy on the supreme bench in Jan 1925. In 1926 he was elected for a 6-year term.

Justice Taylor, 51, died suddenly at his home in Boise Feb. 22, 1929.

He had complained of a slight illness for several days but was feeling better when he retired Friday night, according to an AP dispatch.

About 11 o’clock he called Mrs. Taylor, who found him helpless. He died before physicians could arrive. Word of Justice Taylor’s death received here early Saturday morning shocked the entire community.

Although he had made his home in Boise since his appointment to the supreme bench, he was a frequent visitor here and very popular in his wide circle of friends.

Sadly, his grave at Sandpoint’s Lakeview Cemetery is marked by a now badly decaying stone – hardly a fitting tribute to this notable Sandpoint pioneer. I contacted BPOE 1376 Past Exalted Ruler Dwight Sheffler and he is exploring ideas to rectify this.

The importance of history cannot be overrated. How could we uncover that history without information gleaned from newspapers and grave markers and preserved by museums!

Of Gathering & Hospitality

Home and Hearth is a perception, an idea of what we want a space to look like so it can feel a certain way. Today, wood cook stoves for example, are both functional and romantic. In decades past, the wood cook stove heated the space where Grampa came in after doing chores and took off his boots with half frozen hands. Very little about this scene is romantic and yet the memories we have as children watching Grampa and Grama work in tandem, are in fact, romantic. We think back and want that warmth, that smell of coffee in the morning with a side of laughter. How do we capture it? Can we capture it?

While I am not a fan of living space signage such as the popular Live, Laugh, Love, I understand that these wall instructions come from somewhere. It is as if when we see these words we should be somehow able to engage a lost connection, something that gives us permission to live, to love, and to laugh. But it doesn’t really work that way. We need more.

Once upon a time there was no way to contact friends or neighbors to let them know we would like to stop by for a visit. It wasn’t necessary.

People actually wanted their neighbors to stop by, to ‘come a callin’.

The coffee was always on and a pie was always ready to be served.

Hospitality was a way of life because this WAS life. People needed to engage their neighbors, partly so they didn’t go mad from loneliness, and partly so someone would notice if anyone in the community went missing. We have gotten away from this. But I believe there is hope.

It is the hope that we can once again say “Yes”. Say “yes” to card parties and classes about raising bunnies and chickens and kids. Say “yes” to the neighbor who needs help putting up that last bit of roofing or has lost his wife and needs some company. Say “yes” to going for a drive with a friend to pick up groceries, or a new puppy, or to drop of a meal to the mom of a new baby. And be willing to receive the unexpected, like an unplanned visit from a friend or relative.

This is probably going to require putting down the cell phone, shutting off the TV, and learning how to be ready for anyone whom might wish to stop by. This can begin by actually telling people they can stop by and you hope they will. It might seem abnormal for awhile but soon will become a simple and joyful way of life.

There is no end to the new groups popping up from the Ladies Homestead Group to Quilting Groups, hiking groups, beekeeping communities, Bible Studies, Senior Citizen groups and much more.

One only need look around.

It just occurred to me that I have an old friend whom has been asking me for ages to stop by and I have been too busy. I think it is time to change this.

Berry and Clover Country

The light is growing, the snow is melting, and the ice is beginning to release its hold on the fertile ground of Bonner County. When the county was first being settled in the early 1900s, every house had a root cellar and large garden. By harvest time, the root cellar was hopefully filled to the brim with cans and dried fruit, root vegetables and meat. These “old-timers” canned anything they could; sometimes families would have 700-800 jars canned from their plentiful garden and orchard!

Through a series of interviews conducted over thirty years, we can read about the transition this county has gone through, especially how the land has changed and what is grown here.

Frank and Bill Mase, who lived through the Great Fire of 1910 and built the Valley Vista along Highway 95, remembered the original 1904 homestead on Fish Creek in 1983: “It’s all grown up timber now, we used to have a lovely garden and orchard and everything. … the garden, they never watered it. It just grew. … my Dad had a great big orchard there and I’m telling you we had these ol’ Jonathan apples, they were that big and just like sugar.” Bill Mase thought that the harvest was so easy and plentiful because the county was new soil, never plowed or planted. His brother, Frank, thought the soil was even richer after the fire of 1910; he thought perhaps that the ash from the cedars had acted as a fertilizer. After the fire, the Mase brothers remembered the next years as “the best days. Talk about fishing and all kinds of fruit, we had just everything that we grew on that place. 100 fruit trees … cherries, pears, prunes, plums, all that stuff. The only thing that didn’t do too good was peaches. … But Dad, he grew tobacco … it grew up just great big leaves, then he’d pull them and hang them in the woodshed and, by golly, you know you got a little of that and made a cigar out of it.”

Mabel Eich, she and her husband Herman raised a family up Long Mountain (Eichs) Road in the 1930s and 40s, remembered in 1994 that, “When we came in here most of the places had like apples and pear and pie cherries and sun-sweet cherries. Then it was classified as ‘Berry and Clover Country’ here in the Northwest. You’d always see clover everywhere and you could always raise strawberries and raspberries, anything in the berry order.”

Joy Stone Eldred, who raised her children up above Southside School, mentioned in 2017 that her husband, Walt, had gone up the hill and “planted strawberries and raspberries up there and Dolly and Hart picked those raspberries…he had quite a patch of strawberries… we picked five gallon off that thing two or three different times. I’d give them away to anyone who helped me pick them.”

Today, my parents live close to where my Great-Grandparents Eich raised their family. While they cannot grow tobacco or peach trees up their way, the berries would do wonderfully if the deer would stay out of them! Homes all around Bonner County are planning their gardens and are ready to welcome a summer of growth. Welcome spring flowers and thawed ground, rich and ready for planting!

Things I Have Learned by Judy Baird This will be the final column written by me for this publication. I am retiring soon and when thinking about the topic for this last article, I took some time to look back at prior articles and realized just how much information has been shared in this column over 11 years.

I will always be grateful to the Co Op and to Kathy for finding a spot in the Co Op Round Up for me. I am grateful to Mountain West Bank, my employer for 15 years, who encouraged the sharing of information that hopefully would benefit readers of all ages.

I am extremely grateful to the readers of the column, some who took time to call me and ask for help, who offered suggestions for future articles, and who just wanted to tell me they read my column each month and to thank me.

Working for Mountain West Bank afforded me the opportunity to meet so many people who were looking for someone to help them with their personal or business finances. Some who honestly had no idea where to start, others who were patient with me as I learned my job and had to dig to find an answer or call in resources within the bank to assist.

But through it all, here are some things that have held true over the years and have proven time and time again to be what I would almost call life necessities when it comes to managing your financial life: Firstly, pay attention to your account. Look at your bank statement.

Keep track of your deposits and expenditures. I cannot begin to count how many people have come into my office, shocked that their account had overdrawn, and had no idea how much they had, or sadly, did not have. Customers make mistakes, banks make mistakes, and fraud is everywhere. It is not my responsibility to care more about your account than you do.

Early on, learn the difference between a “want” and a “need”. I think the Rolling Stones song says it best – “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”. Plan for it, save for it, wait awhile, and perhaps find out you really don’t want it anyway. But too often “wants” are the first step to financial difficulties. If you are raising children, it is never too early to teach them about money, about saving, about financial goals, and the difference between a want and a need.

Have a budget. How much do you make and how much do you need to cover expenses? Save something but do it regularly. Start early, start late, just start saving something! It’s amazing when I sit down with people who want a loan and we look at their debt to income ratio.

Too often there is insufficient income to cover basic living expenses let alone a new truck payment. I’ve met so many customers who are proud to say the Dave Ramsey Envelope Budget System taught them how to budget and how to save. It works.

Build a relationship with a banker early on. Have discussions about your goals and how the bank can help. Need a personal loan or thinking about purchasing a home? It’s too late to run into the bank and ask for a mortgage after you have found the home you love and made an offer. It takes time and a plan. Working with a financial expert early on can simplify the process and help eliminate surprises or disappointments.

Understand your credit. Know how to build it, how to protect it, and how to grow it, and if necessary, repair it. Having no credit is almost as bad as having poor credit. Should the time come you do want to borrow money, it is nearly impossible to do that if you have no credit or limited credit. Your banker can help you develop a plan for creating credit or repairing damaged credit. By the way, regularly looking at your credit report is one of the best tools for monitoring identity theft.

If you are self-employed, or own a business, run your business like a business. You may or may not have employees but there are several people who should be working for you, for one, your banker. If the time comes when you need a loan or a line of credit, it helps the process along when your banker already knows you and your business.

Hire a bookkeeper or a CPA. Keep good financial records. Lenders will want to see your tax returns and Profit and Loss statements.

And finally, have a life and end of life plan. One of John Lennon’s songs contain the lyrics “Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans”. If you have not set up a Power of Attorney, if you don’t have a will or an estate plan, if you have not planned for someone to take care of things have just gotten extremely complicated. Doesn’t matter how much or how little you have – someone needs to be able to access your bank accounts.

And without proper documents, there is not much I can do for you as your banker. Too frequently I have seen life happen. Someone suddenly loses a spouse and has no idea where to even begin or learns they are not able to access a bank account. Life happens.
