Getting Back on Track

Every once in a while an issue of the Round Up will go a bit sideways. That was the May issue this last spring for us. Although it would be easy to blame gremlins, what actually happened was I got distracted helping George with his annual tree sale and I lost track of time. The resulting product reflected my lack of attention. Thus, in this issue Dr. Duebendorfers article entitled “The Lure of Statin Drugs” is followed by the correct content this time.

Chase Youngdahl wrote about Canada Thistle as the Weed of the Month for May but I failed to remove “Tansy” from the front page. And the GMO series article that was supposed to be in the last issue is in this issue. I do hope you enjoy all the articles your friends and neighbors provided in this paper.

In the May issue of the Round Up we wrote quite a lot about the cooperatives aspect of the store. Even after having our doors open to the general public for doing business for the last 83 years we still run across folks who have never shopped at the CO-OP because they think they have to be a member to do so. Not so. Anyone can shop at the CO-OP or even do business with Co-op Energy Propane. However, membership does have its benefits.

If you would like to become a member and take advantage of the benefits simply come in to the CO-OP office and pick up a membership form.

When you apply you can choose what kind of stock you would like to have in the cooperative based on your eligibility. Eligibility is based on whether you are a producer and what kind.

Anyone who is a farm, timber, hobby farm, or livestock producer may wish to consider becoming a member. The cooperative pays out dividends in profitable years and has access to great pricing because it itself does business with other cooperatives. If you have an account and use your convenience card at the fuel pumps you can save 3 cents or more per gallon off the posted price at the pump.

You can also become a member if you are a propane customer of Co-op Energy. This is great news! Just imagine, getting money back from a store in the form of dividends just for shopping there! Where to Go & What to Do for Country Folk

THOSE BIG MOMENTS IN LIFE?

By now most people have heard of the Pend d’Oreille Bay Trail. This beautiful trail is currently accessible just north of Sandpoint City Beach and offers a combination dirt/bark path along the north west part of Lake Pend d’Oreille. This 1.25 mile path currently terminates within the Ponderay City limits.

It is pet friendly and offers seating along the way as well as location markers for safety.

From the Pend d’Oreille Bay Trail the communities of Ponder Point and Hope, Idaho can be seen. This is especially beautiful on the evening of July 4th, Independence Day, when communities along the lake set off fireworks. The south end of the trail also offers a lovely view of the Sandpoint July 4th fireworks as they are set off from the jetty to the east of The Seasons.

For the more hearty of body and mind the Mickikinnick Trail west of Sandpoint offers a much more strenuous hike rising 2000 ft in just 3.5 miles. Trail head parking, at roughly 400 Woodland Drive, is available. This is a popular hike so you may see some of your friends and neighbors along the way!

Although any time of the day is a great time for coffee and ice cream, you may want to partner a visit to Panhandle Cone and Coffee with one of these hikes. PCC is located at 216 N. Southside Elementary School Community Gardens - Kids Learning Agriculture

It used to be that keeping a garden was so common that just about every home in the country had one. Not so much anymore. Gardens have become as specialized as the people who grow them ranging from vegetable, to herb, culinary, flower, healing, topiary and meditation gardens. How our ancestors would marvel at us the way we go to the market to buy food and use our own land to meditate.

Several years ago the Bonner County Gardeners Association formed and became an accessible group of Master Gardeners available to the community on several levels. One of those levels is the groups dedication to establishing and preserving school gardens.

Many schools around Bonner County have been the beneficiary of this groups wisdom and knowledge. One of those schools is Southside Elementary School in Cocollala, Idaho, just a few miles south of Sandpoint. Some years ago BCGA installed five raised beds including a drip irrigation system for the school. The idea was to introduce the students to gardening, a way to educate them on where food comes from and how it is produced. The process begins in early spring as seeds are planted and the young seedlings placed under grow lights. Then come the tomato plants, seed potatoes, and seed to sow directly into the soil.

This year the CO-OP has partnered with BCGA to provide the seeds and plants for the school as well as some actual help caring for the garden through the summer when school is out. When school comes back into session, the kitchen will prepare the matured fruits and vegetables for the students and staff to eat as part of their lunch.

Miss Rackham is the kindergarten teacher and has 15 students in her class. This group was responsible for planting pumpkin starts. The plants were about 8” tall having been under the grow lights for a few weeks. These students will then harvest the garden as First Graders.

Miss Gervais’ First Grade class is made up of 23 students. These youth had the opportunity to plant carrots in the raised beds. They also learned about watering and the importance of positive words to the plants. These students will harvest the carrots they planted this spring as Second Graders in the fall.

As much effort and energy goes towards logistics in finding new riding trails and planning adventures with friends, the reality is the least amount of time is often spent on what I consider the most important part of the equation- preparing the horse for a quality, “uneventful” ride by building a solid foundation.

Preparing for riding out is not a matter of desensitizing a horse or practicing riding past scary objects multiple times. The old “wet saddle blankets” theory I agree with to a certain degree; if there is quality conversation during those long trail rides, they add to a horse’s education and build his confidence. If instead each ride is making the horse feel more concerned, the increased frequency/length of ride will only add to the horse’s “spookiness” or reactivity.

A horse’s natural defense is to run when unsure, but if he offers this response, there is usually a “fight” with the rider, teaching the horse that every time he feels fear, he gets critiqued. What if instead we taught the horse the unnatural response that when he is unsure, to physically pause, and mentally check in with the rider, and to willingly hear the rider’s instructions as to how to handle/navigate the situation?

This approach is not an easy answer, nor a quick fix, and counters the idea that the primary focus of trail riding is social hour for the human. Tolerating mediocre proficiency in the basics such as steering, brakes, and using a gas pedal that often “sticks,” is not polite nor supportive to the horse, and will add to any insecurity he may have. Rather than feeling like we survived an unexpected moment, if we have effective tools to communicate, we can use it to build our horse’s confidence, decreasing the chance of injury and increasing the horse’s curiosity every time something new occurs out on the trail.

The ideal response to an aid is a soft and immediate “try” from the horse.

Often a rider’s aid is received as a critical attempt at blocking a horse’s thought or focus, and creates defensiveness in the horse. His mental stress is reflected in excessive physical movement and dramatic behaviors.

Hybrid Seed vs. Heirloom Seed The Basic Difference by Kathy Osborne

Gardeners love a good surprise in the garden from time to time. It is always a joy to see a new species of butterfly, hear a new bird song, or to see a new flower variation that wasn’t there before. Some gardeners are purists and want only the plants of their choosing to grow in designated spaces.

Others love to plant a few choices of their own and then let the wild take over in between. As for me I fall somewhere in the middle.

A few years ago I planted Mammoth Sunflower about 30 feet away from a small patch of Autumn Beauty, a largely ornamental heirloom sunflower variety. The next year after scores of birds and bees had visited my garden over the summer, all the flower heads both big and small had been picked clean of seeds. Or so I thought. When spring arrived a patch of sunflower seedlings pushed up so thick I had to thin it heavily to keep the crop of.....well, I didn’t know exactly what was growing. As it turned out I ended up with a hybrid - a cross between the Mammoth and the Autumn Beauty. The plants varied in appearance. Some had a large, single seed head on top with several smaller flower heads down the stalk. All of the flowers bore seed. None of the Autumn Beauty colors such as red or orange came through. Only sunny yellow flowers came. The stalks were huge and thick, about 3” across in some cases. Other plants gained the height of the Mammoth but not the strong stalk. In this case two or three medium sized flowers bloomed on top which the narrow stalk could not support. These plants had to be staked. It was a lot of work to keep them all but what a hybridizers paradise of variations!

The story of sunflower (Helianthus Annuus ) is indeed amazing. The wild sunflower is native to North America but commercialization of the plant took place in Russia. It was only recently that the sunflower plant returned to North America to become a cultivated crop (Mammoth Russian). But it was the American Indian who first domesticated the plant into a single headed plant with a variety of seed colors including black, white, red, and black/ white striped.* This fact is important because we discover that sunflower, like many other plants, has a very long history of moving from being simply ornamental to becoming a plant cultivated for food. This happens as a result of hybridization of over many years and in this case, centuries. If I had kept the seed and continued to replant I would likely have ended up with a plant closer, over time, to the small single flower variety ancestor to my original planting.

Heirloom seeds come from old plant species of vegetables, fruits such as tomatoes and lately apples which have been kept clean of any genetics from other varieties down through the years. These seeds are sometimes very old and generally do not produce as much fruit as their more recent hybridized cousins. For example a heirloom corn seed may produce a stalk with one, maybe two ears of corn as opposed to the hybrid with 3-4 ears per stalk. Left to themselves heirlooms will generally produce plants similar to the parent with each generation. Without any introduction of new genetic material the result likely will not vary. The genetic material comes from the pollen “dust” on the stamens or cones of just about any plant. Inside the material is a “male” cell which is to be delivered to the “pistil” or other like female receptor of the same or a different plant. The genetic material that results from this fusion will create either another generation of the parent as with self-pollination. Or in the case of manipulated pollen transfer, possibly a new variety of the species.

Hybrid plants whose seeds produce something far removed from the parent plant may have been manipulated over one season, as I found in my garden, or over scores of years such as happens in laboratories all over the world. Hybrids have been a part of agriculture for thousands of years. But how did ancient farmers figure it out? We don’t really know.

The Punnett Square, seen left, is a square diagram used to predict an outcome of a particular cross or breeding experiment. It is named after Reginald C. Punnett, who devised the approach. The diagram is used by biologists to determine the probability of an offspring having a particular genotype.** This square represents probability ONLY because each section is one fertilization, or one child, if you will. But any one who has observed families with lots of natural offspring come to realize that certain genetic traits come through just about everytime. Those traits are dominant and represented here by a large Y. The recessive genes are represented as a small y. So while blue eyes and red hair may be considered recessive genes in a couples genetic heritage, it can show up two times out of 10 children, one time out of five children, or three times out of three children. This is the wondrous beauty of the genetic makeup of plants and animals, the endless variations that are possible over hundreds of generations. Hybridization can happen naturally or by manual intervention. It does not involve crossing species lines and can help make sure there is enough food throughout the world.

Bonner County Weed Department We’re in the midst of summertime, the bread and butter for living in this part of the country for many of us—our reward for enduring 8 months of winter! There are numerous summer activities that are a lot more fun than spraying or pulling weeds, but as is the case with any other chore, it must be done. May & June are the best months [as a general rule of thumb] to achieve maximum control for the majority of noxious weeds in this region, however the rest of the growing season is still a viable timeframe to undertake weed control projects, especially with the proper approach. Some weeds have gone to seed already, while others are still in the bloom stage or not even blooming yet. The Bonner County Weeds office is here to help with weed control advice.

Weed of the month for July is Oxeye Daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare), an often overlooked state listed noxious weed. It’s a short lived perennial that spreads from seeds and root fragments, grows about 1 to 3 feet in height, and has the classic daisy looking flower—yellow disks in the center surrounded by white ray flower petals. The leaves alternate on the stem Oxeye Daisy and have coarsely serrated margins; during the seedling stage the basal (Leucanthemum vulgare) leaf clusters are more rounded with smoother margins. Take note not to confuse Oxeye Daisy with the native Common Daisy or the far less invasive Shasta Daisy. Common Daisy grows much shorter than Oxeye, about 4-6 inches; where Shasta Daisy grows much larger [all the way around], usually about double the height and double the flower size from that of Oxeye.

But Oxeye Daisy is what you will see in most given areas the vast majority of the time.

Oxeye Daisy likes to grow in pastures (especially overgrazed ones), on roadsides, on disturbed sites and just about any site that’s neglected. It thrives in poor soils, including contents that are high in clay or high in sand.

This isn’t the worst weed in the world to try to eliminate from a site, the seed life is relatively short and the root system is not overly extensive—making it more of an opportunist rather than an aggressive spreader. You can use cultural control/preventative measures to get rid of or prevent Oxeye Daisy, which entails site management for good soils and competing plant health.

While eradication on a statewide, regional, county or municipal level is extremely unlikely due to the large footprint it has imposed on the western SCOTCHMAN PEAKS Follow the leader or lead one yourself!

United States, it is possible to eradicate it from localized sites. That said, if given the opportunity it will overtake a pasture and crowd out native plants www.scotchmanpeaks.org/hiking and desirable livestock forage. It’s not poisonous to livestock and it is reasonably palatable (if there’s nothing better available), but contains very little nutritional value and milk from dairy cattle that have consumed it can have an unpleasant flavor. Although it’s not really applicable in this part of the state, I will point out that Oxeye Daisy is a host for yellow dwarf potato virus.

As I mentioned, cultural control is an effective way to combat Oxeye Daisy being that it is an opportunistic invader. Keep the surrounding grasses as healthy as possible with fertilizer treatments, and irrigate if feasible for the site. Grazing is an option; sheep, goats and horses may consume enough to sustain some control. Cultural methods in conjunction with grazing can make for an adequate one-two punch on Oxeye Daisy. Mechanical control for Oxeye may be achieved by digging/pulling the plants out, and since the root system is fairly shallow you may be able to get rid of small isolated infestations this way, provided the soil is moist enough when you’re performing the task. Another mechanical method, which is the same for most perennial weeds, is to disk (or rototill on a landscape scale) the ground every 2-3 weeks throughout the growing season.

If you have followed my articles you may have picked up on a pattern regarding mechanical control with perennials…the key is to exhaust the viable root fragments of their resources, since perennials spread by both seeds and roots. You can clip flower heads off until you’re blue in the face yet never get ahead of the curve because you are only addressing half of the equation—the roots will continue to propagate unless you destroy them. Control with herbicides on Oxeye Daisy is effective using MSM60 (metsulfuron) or Curtail®/Cody® (clopyralid + 2,4-D amine) prior to bloom, or Milestone® (aminopyral• Metal Machining, • Transmission & id) at any point during the growing season. BCGA Garden Tour July 15, 2018

Get ready for another festive and fun BCGA Garden Tour! Sunday, July 15, from 10am to 5pm, is your opportunity to see six outstanding local gardens. Get a carload of friends together and visit these lovely works of natural art. Take your time and enjoy the ambience of each unique landscape; there are details to delight and enchant anyone.

Here are the gardens: The Healing Garden. 520 North Third Ave., Sandpoint, Idaho. Created by the community and maintained with loving care by volunteers, the garden is adjacent to the hospital. Wandering through the lush plantings, intricate rock work, and whimsical art will raise the spirits and bring smiles to all who enter. A small chapel and a gazebo overlooking Sand Creek provide places for quiet contemplation. Vining plants, roses, and shady grottos complete the peaceful effect.

Rimar’s Retreat. Bonnie Rimar’s garden. 730 Whiskey Jack Circle, Sandpoint, Idaho. A lovely landscape that beckons one with a sense of calm and relaxation. A dry stream bed, a soothing lawn and trees in the front of the house and a large patio area in the back say “Stay awhile and relax.” Enjoy the flower beds and vining plants, which frame a view of lake and mountains. LEARN TO LOVE THOSE INSECTS! I walked down the insecticide aisle of a local store recently, and noticed some broad spectrum products for sale. One claimed to kill 235 types of insects! Do people actually use these products? Who really needs to kill every living thing with six legs? This is akin to selling poison that kills all mammals when one has a single gopher on the place. Nobody would do that.

The repercussions of such broad spectrum insecticides are considerable.

Birds eat insects. Insects eat other insects. Insects help break down dead materials, and pollinate plants. Beautiful butterflies and moths are insects.

All insects have a place in the ecosystem that is our home. We don’t need to kill them all. Most are beneficial to us and our landscapes and gardens.

Okay, some insects are annoying. Mosquitoes bite and spread some diseases. Wasps sting sometimes. Aphids gather on plants. So do mites and cabbage worms and other pests. This does not mean one has to kill everything. Here are a few tips to consider before applying insecticide: Identify the plant and the damage you observe. Determine how bad the damage is. Is it getting worse, or does it look like a onetime hit?

Identify the creature that is doing the damage. Are there many or few? Can one hand pick them? Slugs and cutworms can be controlled this way. Make it a game and get the kids out after dark to pick these creatures off the plants and offer a reward for the largest number.

Can you prevent the infestation from starting? Floating row covers over cabbage and other cole crops will help prevent cabbage worms. Making sure one has no standing water helps prevent mosquito proliferation. Put-

ting up swallow houses and encouraging bats can make a big difference in

difference in mosquito control. Clearing brush from around the house is helpful, as dense thickets are habitat for some biting insects.

Yellow jackets are a nuisance, but there are traps and baits available.

Wasps and yellow jackets are predators and will feed on other insects in the garden. They are generally beneficial.

Aphids can often be washed off a plant with a strong stream of water, aimed particularly at the underside of leaves. If you have lady bugs, they and their larva are eating aphids as fast as they can.

Consider companion planting to deter some insects, or to attract insects, as a “trap crop.” The insects are attracted to the “trap crop” and away from the treasured plants.

Avoid buying plants treated with neonicotinoids, which are applied to plants systemically and will kill insects indiscriminately. Avoid insecticides containing neonicotinoids.

If your infestation is such that you need to apply an insecticide, be selective. Find a product that kills only the creature that is bothering you. Some products are species specific. Insecticidal soaps are effective in many cases. In any case, be sure to follow the package instructions. Do not apply any insecticide to food crops unless the label specifies that it is safe.

Learn to love those insects. They are a wonder of nature. Teach your children the benefits that insects provide, and admire the variety of forms and colors of these tiny creatures.

The Lure of Statin Drugs

The Ketogenic Diet with its bulletproof coffee has been a hit with many folks in the past few years. While in my experience, most people’s cholesterol and triglycerides decrease due to improved blood sugar, in some people the increased amount of dietary fat can cause an increase in these blood lipids.

This appears to be due to a carnitine deficiency. Carnitine is an enzyme that transports fat into the cells to be used for energy. If that is missing, excessive fats continue to float around in the blood stream.

I recently had a patient who reported higher cholesterol values while on the ketogenic diet. I asked him to stop the high fat diet for a few months and then repeat the labwork. Even before the new blood values were back, he was urged to go on a statin prescription to avoid serious cardio-vascular damage due to his insulin dependent diabetes. Never mind that his diabetes was under excellent control as he had been following a very strict dietary protocol that requires just minimum amounts of insulin injection.

While the new labs showed normalized blood lipid levels except for a mildly elevated LDL with a great HDL/LDL ratio, his doctor still highly recommended statins. This is actually a highly controversial practice, which seems to be influenced by a bias in industry-sponsored trials. In fact this is a typical example of patients being scared or shamed into taking statins to prevent future damage, just like physicians and scientists have been publicly derided for dissenting views about this practice.

An article in the January 2018 issue of the British Journal of Sports Medicine (1) explains how that came about. Statins are the most prescribed drug world wide, with total sales estimated to reach US$1 trillion by 2020. Originally used for people with existing heart disease, they are now also used for healthy people to effectively reduce cholesterol. In fact in 2004 the cholesterol limits were lowered to increase statin prescription, despite lack of clear evidence of cardio-vascular (CV) disease or fatality risk reduction.

Not surprisingly 8 out of 9 committee members had financial ties to the industry, and the vast majority of trials are still sponsored by the industry with a lack of transparency of data leading to biased results, including lack of scrutiny surrounding statin side effects. Raw data are only available to one industry sponsored group of researchers, the CTT (Cholesterol Treatment Trialists) Collaboration. The only independent study showed Pravastatin to not have any significant benefit in reducing mortality from any cause or heart disease specific cause in healthy people. (2) Dr Demasi (1) explains that one major problem is to equate cholesterol reduction with reduction of CV disease. There actually is evidence that indicates the relatively few benefits of statins in males with existing CV disease to be due to an anti-inflammatory rather than cholesterol lowering effect. Using cholesterol values as the only guideline for drug initiation invariably leads to over prescription. Evaluating inflammatory markers such as hsCRP, glucose, insulin, hemoglobin A1C, and carotid artery ultrasound measures are more reliable indicators of risk.

She cites another statistical deception that is, perhaps unintentionally, frequently used by practitioners to coerce patients into statin use. “Relative risk reduction” is frequently used when talking about statin benefits (e.g. 30%). What is not explained here is that this represents a 30% reduction of the actual occurrence of death due to CV disease, not a risk reduction in the general population. If I did my math correctly, according to 2015 data (3), 0.3 % of males died due to CV disease. A 30% relative death reduction due to taking statins comes down to an actual absolute death reduction of 0.09%. In actual numbers this means 0.3 deaths out of 100,000 males with CV disease were prevented. On the other hand statin risks are generally reported as absolute risk reduction, which at 2% doesn’t sound like much, making the drug a lot more appealing to take.

Besides the major side-effect of weakness, pain, and destruction of muscle tissue, which causes the majority of people to stop statin use, there are more insidious symptoms, such as brain fog and fatigue, which patients tend to become aware of only when they disappear upon discontinuation of the drug.

The more concerning risk is the correlation to both causing and aggravating existing diabetes, especially as statins often are recommended in this patient population, as CV disease is a major complication. Dr. Duane Greyline, MD (4) , author of “Lipitor, thief of Memory”, explains that lipids are needed in the brain for healthy functioning. Dr. Perlmutter, a prominent neurologist also has observed memory decline with statins. Not only are all nerve cells coated with myelin, which is primarily cholesterol, but cholesterol is also the foundation of all cell membranes and hormones.

From a naturopathic perspective, cholesterol is a necessary ingredient essential to health, which naturally rises when there is oxidative damage due to inflammation, to repair vessel damage. The proper recourse is to explore and address the cause of inflammation, such as poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, insulin resistance, diabetes, chronic infection, chronic stress, and toxin load. In my experience insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome is a major cause of inflammation and chronic disease in general and can be very effectively addressed without medication. Thyroid function and gut health needs to be evaluated, as auto-immune disease and allergies also contribute to higher levels of inflammation.

In summary, despite historic public derision of dissenting views on statin prescriptions by industry sponsored physicians and researchers, there recently has been a more public demand from the medical community for a more informed debate. The call is for more independent studies as well as transparency of raw data to evaluate biased results. In the meantime, the fact that 75% of new statin users discontinue prescription by the end of first year, including 62% due to side effects, should give one pause to think (1). Perhaps a first step should be a focus on diet, exercise, and stress management and perhaps addition of anti-inflammatory turmeric with pepper and good fish oil, instead of the prescription pad. If you are taking statins make sure to add CoQ10 to protect your muscles.

In this issue we give homage to The S’More, that American treat that has called many a kid and adult to the camp fire and now the ever more popular back yard fire pit. The S’More is the delectable, sticky, messy delicacy saved for special occasions where water is readily available, either a lake, a creek, or yard fountain. It is that glorious chocolate/graham cracker/marshmallow wonder that brings the kid out in adults and makes kids, mouth still full, say S’More please!

Though most people have heard of the s’more its history is a bit foggy. However, the first published recipe for “some mores” was in a 1927 publication called Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts. Loretta Scott Crew, who made them for Girl Scouts by the campfire, is given credit for the recipe.* And the recipe is simple but extremely versatile!

For example, the original is simply two graham crackers, 1 marshmallow, and a slab of chocolate. Where you go from there is entirely up to you. The other thing you will need is an open flame, preferably, a camp fire. It just IS NOT the same without the open flame because this is where the exquisite

toasting of the marshmallow takes place. The marshmallow is threaded onto a roasting stick, the sturdier the better, and then held over the open flame. The pros can roast a marshmallow to perfection within the flame extinguishing the sugary blaze to result in a crispy confection! However there are those prone to simply have fun by letting the marshmallow catch fire and turn black before madly blowing it out. In any case it is now ready!

It is best to have your graham cracker and slab of chocolate ready to receive the marshmallow and quickly place the second graham cracker on top of it because this is how it is removed from the roasting stick. Then it is a race!

As the crispy marshmallow comes into contact with the chocolate the whole thing begins to melt into a hot, sloppy, sticky mess! Too hot to eat but you have to try! You’ll need the water source to clean up after this.

The S’More is Americana right up there with apple pie, elephant ears at the county fair, and cinnamon rolls at Christmas. What is becoming even more Americana is the backyard fire pit. This is the place of company, conversation, and laughter all wrapped in a blanket while the crackling fire leads us to peaceful ponderings. The S’More fits right in to this image.

So get the fixings of your choice, fire up the pit and make sure there is water close at hand. Make some S’Mores and some memories this July 4th!

The Hand That Drives the Tractor

You have heard it said “the hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world.” This phrase is the refrain of a poem written by William Ross Wallace. First published as “What Rules the World” in 1864, it was written in praise of motherhood. While the women of the past were rocking cradles a good many fathers were driving tractors in the fields. And when the babies in those cradles were old enough they joined their fathers on those same tractors. It was a right of passage of sorts.

For those of us in the country driving a tractor came before driving the family car and just after driving the hay truck. As our fathers pulled us up to stand beside them and learn, school was usually in session for about half an hour before we were put in the drivers seat. Grinding gears and crooked rows meant that an education was being gained. A few lost hay bales rewarded with laughter and yells of “Whoa whoa, slow down” were the order of the day. With sundown came the establishment of a new level of worker capable of driving anything he, or she, could sit tall enough to see out over the top of. This is where our fathers and grandfathers shone. They gave us the reins as soon as we were brave enough to try and they were close enough to rescue us.

By the time most farm kids were old enough to get their drivers license they had already been driving for 5 years. And they were driving everything from mini bikes to horses to ATVs and more by the time it was all said and done. The finer points of driving socially, out on the highway and through town, would be handled at the drivers license office. Frankly, the Drivers Education Manual just wasn’t that big of a deal back then and our hometown only had one signal light anyway.

Even so, getting ones first drivers permit and then license was a banner day in most farm kids lives. It meant they had the freedom to drive to town, go to a movie, or out on a date! It opened up a whole new world so much bigger than driving in circles around the farm! And it usually all started on that tractor.

Could it be that when it comes to family life, the hand that drives the tractor is as important as the one that rocks the cradle?

Our country was built on such partnerships.

One could argue that it is foundational to the Great American Success Story.

Osprey Boat Cruise Planned for July 7, 2018

The osprey is a fish-eating hawk commonly seen in northern Idaho. At least 100 pairs nest annually in the Coeur d’Alene Lake region including the lower reaches of the St. Joe and Coeur d’Alene Rivers.

Adult osprey along with the young of the year birds begin their annual migration in mid-September, traveling all the way to Baja California, Central America, and many all the way to South America. The adults return in late winter/early spring to the area where they originally hatched.

The University of Idaho and the Idaho Fish and Game Department have been studying and banding ospreys at Coeur d’Alene Lake for over 30 years. The work is done to determine survival and mortality rates and to further define the migration patterns and wintering areas of the population.

The banding process goes very quickly. After the leg bands are applied and the biologists move away, the adults immediately return to the nests to find their young safe and secure...but sporting new leg bands.

None of us know if having a leg band is a status symbol or an embarrassment in the osprey world, but the bands allow for the gathering of some remarkable information to help biologists learn about the species and to protect osprey populations.

An Osprey Boat Cruise piloted by Captain Carl Fus of Coeur d’Alene Lake Cruises has been scheduled for Saturday, July 7. The trip will run from 9am -11am. Boarding begins at 830. Be on time as the boat leaves the dock promptly at 9am! The cruise will be leaving from the east side of the CdA Resort boardwalk by Tubbs Hill and McEuen Park. Parking is available at the McEuen Park parking lot and on nearby city streets.

The cost of the trip is $20 for adults. Children under 12 are free when with a paying adult. A family rate of $45 covers two adults and three children up to age 18. Seniors and students are $15. Space is limited to 150 people and reservations are required. Reservations can be made by calling the Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce at (208) 664-3194.

Wildlife Biologists will be in a small boat that will travel alongside the Lake Coeur d’Alene Charter Cruise boat. Well known Wildlife Biologist and renowned osprey researcher Dr. Wayne Melquist will take young of the year birds from osprey nests and band them, while the passengers on the cruise boat watch and take photos.

Speakers on the cruise boat will include wildlife biologists and experts on bird species. They will be on board the cruise boat to provide fascinating biological information on ospreys and other wildlife species. Sandy Emerson will emcee representing the Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce Natural Resources Committee and the Idaho Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

Bring binoculars and a camera. A sun hat and sun screen are advised.

Invited guest speakers also include the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality’s CdA Lake Management Team, the BLM, the Inland NW Land Conservancy, and the Cougar Bay Osprey Preservation Association. The annual event is sponsored by the Natural Resources Committee of the Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce. Cooperators include The Nature Conservancy, the Idaho Fish and Game Department, the Idaho Fish and Wildlife Foundation, the University of Idaho, the Audubon Society and the Coeur d’Alene Resort.

Be Prepared for Summer Fun

It is summer and as usual we are going to try to cram as much summer living into three short months as possible. We are going to climb, swim, blade, slide, jump, spelunk, dunk, and splash our way to outdoor Nirvana any way we can get there. And a long the way we are likely going to get bruised, scratched, bitten, stung, and possibly broken in a place or two.

No matter where you are of to this summer there are just eight of the many things we should never leave the house, or tent, without (doing). It’s time to get out the back pack and check for these items: 1. Your Epi-Pen - if you are allergic to bees this is a must. Cell phones do not always work out in the wild. Don’t take any chances.

2. Flashlight - flashlights are made so small and bright these days with LED technology! Make sure you have one along with extra batteries. You never know when a hike is going to take longer than expected.

3. Water! Water! Water! - This cannot be stressed enough whether you are going on a short hike or out on the boat. Dehydration is potentially dangerous and it can give you awful body aches in the mean time.

4. First Aid Kit - This need not be cumbersome but you do need the essentials. Most stores sell kits of some sort. Adapt yours to the kind of outdoor activities you love and then get it in the pack. You will never regret being able to properly dress a wound on the trail.

5. Emergency blanket - Again these space-age beauties are so compact it is just wisdom to include one in your pack. Two maybe.....

6. Bee / insect sting treatments - Although some concerns have been raised about using meat tenderizer on bee stings, none have amounted to much. Meat tenderizer can be placed in a plastic zip lock bag to be mixed with water into a paste and applied to the bee sting IMMEDIATELY. The sting and pain should abate within a couple of minutes and the swelling, unless you are allergic, will also be minimal. For other insect bites that result in itching, take along a small package of Tucks wipes. Yes, Tucks. It is the witch hazel that does the trick!

7. Snack Foods - Don’t forget to take a snack of some sort along. Don’t bother about whether it is “healthy “ or not. Just don’t forget it.

8. Tell Someone where you are going to be. Leave a message, a map, or text a friend before you venture out alone. It is a big beautiful wild place we ALL-ADVENTURE SEA-DOO AND GET UP TO live in and you can get lost.

Living With Predators in the Country

If you are going to live in the country, predators come with the territory.

This sounds scary. It is scary. But with a little bit of information and a great deal of common sense, it is possible to safely inhabit larger spaces where predators exist.

Predators in our area range from The Grizzly bear down to the Common Weasel. Predators follow prey – this means that if humans want to live in harmony with predators, there is some work to be done.

At right is a photo taken at my farm with a wildlife camera placed in the attic of my chicken coop. The structure measures 16’ x 24’ and the attic has been open on the ends for 10 years. There has never been a problem until this spring when a bobcat figured out that chickens could be accessed by going into the attic and down through an open vent measuring 16” x 24” When I went to check the chickens I discovered a feather trail and fowl abduction evidence I had never seen before. The evidence led from the coop to the attic. I concluded that this predator was different from the raccoons and coyotes I had encountered in the past. This new one had to be a cat of some kind. This animal had to be strong enough to scale and or jump up the 8’ high structure, go down through the vent, grab a chicken, and climb back up through the vent without benefit of good traction as a large window is in the wall just beneath the vent. All this while the chicken is obviously still fighting given the feather dispersal. The cat then jumped out the other end of the attic and escaped through the pasture leaving feathers and paw prints in the snow along the way.

I immediately went about enclosing the vent with heavy cage wire, nailing boards around the edges for added strength. Then I had my cousin place a wildlife camera in the attic of the coop.The cat came back, as I thought, and this lovely photo is a spectacular image of a bobcat.

Skunks and raccoons love chickens and ducks so keep these poultry inside at night. Also, check your coop periodically for holes as small as ¾” across. Some weasels can get through an opening this small and so can small snakes. A weasel can decimate a flock over a few nights and the carnage is disturbing.

With just a few inspections every few days and attendance to timely repairs, we can steward our farms, keep our animals safe and live in harmony with nature and her predator all at the same time.

I do not know the gender but this cat was nice enough to pose such that the solid black tail tip coloring as well as a couple of rings is quite visible.

These markings set this cat apart from a lynx. We also know from the structure measurements that this opportunistic hunter measures about 19” at the shoulder. When it could not get in through the vent it tried to dig down through the pine shavings.

The ends of the attic are now closed in with plywood and cage wire to protect against any further predator activity while allowing for good hen house ventilation.

Bobcats have been in the vicinity of my farm for decades. Since they move around mostly at night we rarely saw them. Over the years we have had a few poultry dispatches which have been easy to identify as a raccoon or a coyote kill. Predators have varying kill/abduction/consummation habits so observing the evidence produced by the predator helps to identify it. And you just about have to do this to make certain it does not happen again.

Although trapping options do exist it is best left to the Fish and Game professionals if and when the predation becomes a problem. Long before then, however, less aggressive steps can be taken. Since all predators follow the prey, keep the prey inaccessible.

Know the predators in your area. Keep all small farm animals closed up every single night. This includes smaller horses, cows, sheep, and goats even if a guard dog, llama, or guard donkey is on the job. Many predators are opportunistic so not closing in your smaller livestock at night is like hanging out a “FREE LUNCH HERE” sign.

If you have bee hives, fencing them in with sturdy posts and welded fence is good. Electrifying that fence is even better when it comes to keeping bears away from the honey. Keep pet food and dishes inside a building away from bears and raccoons.

5 First-time Homebuyer Mistakes to Avoid

Thinking about buying your first home? From finding the perfect location to financing your purchase, shopping for your first home has challenges that go beyond curb appeal and interior features.

Before you can unlock the door to homeownership, you have to take some important first steps, including getting approved for a mortgage, choosing the right real estate agent, and finding the right home that fits your budget.

There are also some common mistakes first-time homebuyers make and should avoid when making that decision to purchase a home. Many firsttime homebuyers decide to buy when they feel ready for a mortgage. But just because they can afford the mortgage payment doesn’t mean they can afford to own a home, according to New York attorney Rafael Castellanos, president of Expert Title Insurance.

Many potential buyers have an idea of what their mortgage payment is going to be, but they don’t realize there’s much more to it. Property insurance, taxes, homeowners’ association dues, maintenance, and higher electric and water bills are some of the costs that first-time homebuyers tend to overlook when shopping for a place.

“Keep in mind property taxes and insurance have a tendency of going up every year,” Castellanos says. “Even if you can afford it now, ask yourself if you’ll be able to afford the increased costs later.”

Secondly, home buying doesn’t begin with home searching. It begins with a mortgage prequalification — unless you’re lucky to have enough money to pay cash for your first house. Often, first-time homebuyers are afraid to get prequalified. They fear the lender may tell them they don’t qualify for a mortgage or they qualify for a loan smaller than expected. Some will pick a price range out of the sky and say, “Let’s go look for a house”. And that’s not how it should be done. Yes, it’s more fun to go look at houses than to sit in a lender’s office where you have to expose your financial situation. The best approach is to be preapproved, and then find a home. That way, you’ll make a financial decision versus an emotional decision.

Thirdly, get professional help, especially if you are new to the homebuying game. You’ll need a reputable real estate agent, a good loan officer or broker, and perhaps a lawyer. Venturing into this process alone, without professional help, is not a good idea. While every rule has its exception, generally, it may be helpful for a first-time homebuyer to find a buyer’s agent rather than deal directly with the listing agent.

If you hire an agent without a referral from friends or family, ask the agent to provide references from previous buyers. The same goes for loan officers or mortgage brokers. It can be difficult for first-time homebuyers because they don’t know who to contact or deal with. It’s crucial to find a professional who will give you truly independent advice.

Next, spending all or most of their savings on the down payment and closing costs is one of the biggest mistakes first-time homebuyers make.

Some people scrape all their money together to make the 20 percent down payment so they don’t have to pay for mortgage insurance, but find they are then left with no savings at all.

Homebuyers who put 20 percent or more down don’t have to pay for mortgage insurance when getting a conventional mortgage. That’s usually translated into substantial savings on the monthly mortgage payment. But doing so can leave the buyer without any savings or funds for emergencies or unforeseen expenses.

Finally, another common mistake is getting new loans before the mortgage deal has closed. You have prequalified for a loan. You found the house you wanted. The contract is signed and the closing is in 30 days. Don’t celebrate by financing another big purchase. Resist the urge to go buy new furniture for the house or a new car.

Lenders pull credit reports before the closing to make sure the borrower’s financial situation has not changed since the loan was approved. Any new loans on your credit report can negatively impact credit scores and jeopardize the closing.

and talk to realtors about your local realty market. Determine what monthly housing costs would be, and include taxes and insurance in your cost. Find out how much your closing costs will be.

Look at your budget. Fannie Mae recommends that buyers spend no more than 28 percent of their income on housing. Examine your credit - you may get your free annual credit report from each of the three major credit reporting bureaus and check for errors. It’s also a good idea to get your credit score.

Find a lender and get preapproved. A preapproval helps you bargain from a position of strength when you are house hunting. Gather your documents before meeting with a lender. Collect paystubs, bank account statements, W-2’s, tax returns, and statements from current loans and credit lines. Having all of that paperwork for the lender saves time.

Remember, it’s easy to fall in love with that “dream home” but it can quickly turn into a nightmare if you aren’t able to make the payment, or are able to make the payment but have little to nothing left for monthly expenses, emergencies, and savings. Be smart about your decision – buying a home may in fact be one of the biggest decisions you might make in your lifetime.

Sam Owen Fire District to Host Annual Pancake Breakfast Gather here; Gather near!

The Sam Owen Fire District will be hosting its annual Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, July 28, so take a break and forget about cooking. Instead, go over to the Sam Owen Fire Station #1 for a breakfast that will start your day off right. A scenic drive along Highway 200 will take you to the Sam Owen Fire Station #1, located at the junction of Peninsula Road and Highway 200 in Hope. A steaming hot breakfast of pancakes, eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, juice and coffee or tea breakfast will be served from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for only $5.

After breakfast take time to tour the station, meet the firefighters and CoFire Chiefs Stu Eigler and Tim Scofield. You’ll have the opportunity to sit in the trucks, meet Smokey, the firedog and try on the equipment. It’s surprising how heavy it is. There will be free handouts for the children and the first 50 children will receive fire chief hats.

This is the major community event and only fundraiser for the Sam Owen Fire District. The monies raised are used for supplies for the fire house, including uniforms, communication devices, and important firefighting equipment. Over 60 volunteers, plus the firefighters and fire chief spend untold hours to collect donations, cook the meal and serve you a delicious breakfast. The Sam Owen Fire District is committed to providing the highest level of fire protection and emergency services to all its residents, businesses and visitors. The District’s volunteer staff made up of local residents of various ages and backgrounds has been trained and equipped for both structure and wildlands fire fighting. We’ve got past medics from the Navy, past wildland firefighters, pilots, CPAs who all donate their time and expertise.

Firefighters train 3 times a month to hone their skills and keep up on the most current methods. The volunteers have either completed or are completing the nationally recognized Essentials 1 training course for fire personnel. In addition, a number of the volunteers are qualified EMTs and others have completed training in first aid, life support, rescue and extrication. In addition, Sam Owen Fire has instituted a second tier training for volunteers unable to perform the more physically demanding jobs of firefighting. We are seeking recruits for our new program. Friends Help Friends Through The Alzheimer’s Journey by Anne Haynes

So your friend is caring for a parent or a spouse with Alzheimer’s disease or some other form of dementia. You used to do a lot of activities together or just spend time visiting. As your friend’s loved one progresses farther into the disease process you realize that you aren’t seeing as much of her or him as you used to. Their family member can’t be left alone and it feels awkward to visit back and forth or go places with the added presence of someone who isn’t engaging on a normal level. So you find it is easier not to plan time together. Your friend calls less and less often, turns down your invitations to do things and over time the contact between you is sporadic at best. Sometimes you wonder why your friend can’t just figure out a way to show up. It can’t be that hard, right?

Often with dementia care, the weight of caregiving creeps up slowly without the caregiver realizing what is happening to them. Their loved one may start out needing some help remembering things, then slowly progresses to needing help with cooking, cleaning, and getting to appointments as they can no longer be allowed to drive. Eventually they require help with showers, dressing and even, in many cases, feeding themselves. And somewhere in the middle of this it becomes unsafe to leave them alone at all. Their loved one may wander at night disturbing the family caregiver’s sleep. The caregiving duties and fatigue pile up and the need to constantly be watching over someone who might hurt themselves or get lost takes precedence over any kind of a social outlet. There simply isn’t time or energy to try to do both.

And yet this is a time when a family caregiver needs their friends, even though they may not be able to articulate it. They get so bogged down and often try so hard not to burden anyone else with “their burden” that they don’t ask for help and have trouble accepting help or even knowing how someone could help. A general query of “is there anything I can do” is often answered by “no, we’re fine” as they struggle through the day hour by hour. Don’t just accept this statement at face value. Maybe your friend can’t do the same things you used to do as friends, but be willing to come in through the back door with some other ways of approaching the situation.

The Alzheimer’s Association has a sweet little pamphlet called “10 Wayss to help a Family Living with Alzheimer’s”.

A few of the highlights include staying in touch - a short phone call or visit just to say you are thinking of them and catch them up on news from your world often lightens a day more than people realize. One man actually looked forward to visits from religious groups of churches he wasn’t interested in, just because it broke the monotony of the day and he had a normal person to talk to for a few minutes.

With several fully equipped fire fighting and rescue trucks, the District is able to respond to any fire or emergency situation. The rescue vehicle has the latest in extrication, land and water rescue equipment. The four-wheel drive wildlands vehicle can reach our most remote areas, and many of the volunteers have completed intensive training in wildlands fire fighting.

Find out what your friend and family like to eat and drop off dinner. Or at least call and say “I am going to the store and I want to drop by to see you for for a minute anyway, so what could I pick up for you?” Even if your friend likes to cook, the energy drain of caregiving can make it a difficult daily chore. When I was caring for a family member during one period of time, dinner was the hardest part of my day - deciding what to make, getting the ingredients, and finding the energy at the end of the afternoon to actually make it.

Educate yourself about dementia and Alzheimer’s. Learn about its effects both for the caregiver and the person. There is so much helpful information on the Alzheimer’s Association website (www.alz.org), and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (www.alzfdn.org) among others.

Jolene Brackey has a website (www.enhancedmoments.com) with many resources and products to help someone know about how to respond and be with someone with dementia. Check that out, then plan a simple and safe outing with your friend which can include the person with dementia in a fun way - a picnic, a meal at your house, a drive in the country, a walk together down the street. Getting out of the house and enjoying a breath of fresh air with friends, even for half an hour, helps both the caregiver and their family member.

If the loved one is housebound and you are able, offer to come sit with them and kick your friend out to go shopping or walking or visiting someone else.

Encourage them if they are reluctant. When my baby was in the hospital for a week many years ago, I refused leave her at all. It wasn’t a critical situation and on the third day a friend showed up and plunked herself down in the chair in the room and said, “I don’t care what you do but get out of the hospital and don’t come back for at least half an hour.” Sometimes you have to help friends help themselves.

Let your friend know about any daycare opportunities that might help. DayBreak Center, where I work, is a local daytime care and social center for persons with memory problems. We can take care of your friend’s family member for a few hours - and we have so much fun with them while doing it - and you can take your friend off for a day of fun. I can’t tell you how much this has helped families.

You can call the DayBreak Center at 208-265-8127 or come in and talk to us about how we can help. We are open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. There is significant financial help available for the $10/ hour cost, so don’t let your friend use finances as an excuse for utilizing this service. Movies Under the Stars

Once a thriving industry and a distinctive piece of Americana history, drive in movies will always hold nostalgic memories for anyone fortunate enough to have experienced them in their prime. Add in the privacy and comfort of your own vehicle and an exciting new experience – and drive in movies were more than just a screen under the stars.

Over the years many experimented with being able to project movies outdoors, but perhaps the most serious about pursuing this endeavor as a business was Richard Hollingshead. After setting up a screen in his yard, experimenting with speaker volumes, and testing ramps at different heights so every car would have a clear view of the screen, Hollingshead applied for a patent on his idea. On June 6, 1933 in Camden, N.J., people paid 25 cents per car and person to view the comedy, Wives Beware, at the first official drive in theater.

The idea took off and soon outdoor theaters were becoming the hottest new trend. Originally, sound was provided by large speakers near the screen.

Some theaters transitioned to using individual speakers that hung from the window of each car and attached with a wire. Eventually, technology stepped in and movie goers were able to broadcast the sound through the AM/FM radio in their car.

By 1958, drive-ins were in their prime and the number of drive-ins peaked at 4,063. They were particularly popular in rural areas where it was quieter, the stars shined brighter, and the land was cheaper. This included our very own Bonner County drive in, the Sandpoint Motor Movie, which opened in 1952. Besides having a gorgeous natural setting for a movie theater, surrounded by towering trees, blanketing stars and the glow of the mountain side, the Sandpoint Motor Movie also featured recreational activities to partake in while waiting out the twilight until proper darkness for outdoor movie viewing. A playground, a horse shoe pitching lot, and concessions with free coffee also took up the five acre lot that could hold 300 vehicles.

As prices for home televisions and technology dropped, so did the sales and popularity of drive in movies. Viewers simply preferred to stay home and watch movies in the comfort of their living room. The Sandpoint Motor Movie closed in 1976, as did many others across the nation.

Each summer, Pine Street Dental and the Bonner County History Museum revive the nostalgia of the drive in theater with Movies in the Park at Lakeview Park. Land Values 2018: Where Are They Now? Jim Haynes, Associate Broker, Realm Partners

Vacant land prices followed national housing trends with large run-ups during 2003 to 2007. This was followed by a significant decline from 2007 to 2010. Since then prices in Bonner and Boundary Counties have stayed relatively flat while Kootenai County has seen a significant rise in the last two years. Below is a chart showing the median sales price for vacant 5-10 acre lots for the three northern Idaho counties from 2003 to May 31, 2018. $200,000

Considering the first half of both charts, one can see that the number of lots sold started to increase before the sales price of lots increased. In 2004 the number of 5-10 acre vacant land parcels began to decrease while the price of comparable parcels continued to increase for another two to three years, when prices began to fall. In 2012 Kootenai County lot sales began to increase and it took four years for lot prices to start their upward trend, slightly longer than during the last cycle. For the last few years the number of lots sold has begun to increase in all three northern Idaho counties. The inventory of 5-10 acre lots has decreased over the last year. At the current sales pace there are 11 months of inventory in Kootenai County and 1.3 years of inventory in Bonner County. In Boundary County there are 1.5 years of 5-10 acre vacant lot inventory. One year ago, those inventories were 1.3, 2.2 and 4.2 years respectively. Inventories are tightening which puts upward pressure on prices.

What about other vacant land lots of variable size? Previously the discussion has been based on 5-10 acre lots, and prices discussed are based on the lot regardless of size. Below is a table based on actual land sales regardless of parcel size for the previous 12 months ending May 31, 2018.
