Season of Fairs, Faith, and the Fourth

Summer has finally arrived and thankfully we have no smoke at the moment. There has been enough moisture to grow hay, to water the gardens, and the temperatures have been much more like I remember as a kid. It was always cold and rainy in June - Kids Bible Camp usually got rained out.

I also remember it never dampened our spirits as we looked forward to the big summer events of 4th of July and the County Fairs.

The Lions Club has been an ever present part of summer here, their fundraising tents placed around town offering chances on a winning ticket while financing our beloved 4th of July Fireworks display. In my youth there was never any question that my family would spend the day in town at the 4th of July Parade, Lions Picnic, Variety Show, and the Fireworks when dusk finally arrived. It was spectacular! Really just the best and the whole community turned out. Even if the 4th happened to be on Sunday the faithful managed to both honor God and be present to stand up for Old Glory.

After The 4th it was back to work with 4-H projects! In just a few weeks we would be camping out at the Bonner County Fairgrounds entering exhibits, showing animals, participating in the 4-H Horse Show, and eating that most glorious treat of the summer...Elephant Ears! Is there anything else that says fair time like elephant ears? That crunchy, cinnamony, sugary wonder made by our neighbors at the food booths. And the lines to get this delectable treat were always the longest. Ahhh...the county fair.

This year The CO-OP will be back at the Bonner County Fair supporting the 4-H Livestock Event, answering co-op questions at our booth, and we will probably have baubles, trinkets, and salted peanuts. So drop by and see us.

In this issue of the Round Up you will find some useful information about things happening at the store, garden tours, weed control, working with your horse, and how to manage health care when there is smoke in the air. Make sure you check out the Movies in the Park schedule on page 2. This has become a great community event provided by the Bonner County Historical Museum and sponsored by several local businesses which makes it free to the public.

The Boundary County Fair , “It’s All the Buzz” is August 14-17, 2019 in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. The Bonner County PRCA Rodeo is August 2-3, 2019. The Bonner County Fair is August 21-24 and will end the week with the famous Demolition Derby on the 24th.

North Idaho has quite a lot going on this summer beginning with the 4th of July in just a few days. It is our hope that you will join us as we celebrate our faith in our nation, support our 4-H and FFA youth at the fairs, and celebrate our community at these events.

CO-OP Fuel Pump Maintenance Scheduled for Mid July

The CO-OP Gas & Supply Company is growing! And with growth comes the opportunity to improve service and reliability for our customer members.

The Co-Op needs to do maintenance on the clear diesel underground tank. After much consideration it has been determined, the concrete above the tank needs to be partially excavated. The contractor has scheduled the work for mid-July. The construction is scheduled to be completed by Aug 2. We will post signs to help keep you informed, as the work progresses.

The pumps where clear diesel will be available will change. Please be sure to read the signage on the pumps. The pumps will be pump 1, 2 and 13. Pump 13 is in the south end of the trucking island. Pump 13 is not a high flow nozzle. The realignment of pumps is only temporary due to the tank maintenance. The pumps will return to the current configuration after the maintenance. The truck island will have high flow capabilities again after the maintenance is finished We are sorry for any inconvenience. If you are using a slip tank full please consider keeping it full or consider getting a home/farm delivery.

The Co-Op makes home/farm deliveries if that would be a better option for you during this time. Home/farm deliveries need to be a minimum of 100 gallons. Please order at least a week in advance so that there is adequate time to schedule and complete your delivery. Call our energy department at 208-263-3338 to schedule your delivery.

Since there will be no clear kerosene available at the pumps, clear Kerosene will be available in 1 gallon or 2.5 gallon in the store.

Please be assured that the Co-Op will be doing everything possible to make sure there is no interruption in service. If there is an unexpected disruption in service, we are sorry for any inconvenience.

Gen Z and the Connection to the Past

Generation Z. Society has taken to naming the generations as they come and go. Those born between 1997 and the present have several designations including “screen generation’ which although probably accurate, isn’t very catchy. Gen Z has won the name game and you are going to hear more about them as the next few years unfold.

As of 2016 Gen Z made up about 25% of the population, currently 27%.

According to Pew Research Gen Z is expected to reach 82 million by 2026 making it the single largest segment of the population. As The Boomer population is lost over the next 7 years a new way of looking at everything from business to politics and even the concept of freedom will be on the table Gen Z and Millennials think very much alike socially, politically, and environmentally. But in at least one place some change has occurred.

A 2016 U.S. study found that church attendance during young adulthood was 41% among Generation Z, compared to 18% for Millennial at the same ages, 21% of Generation X, and 26% of Baby Boomers * This does not necessarily mean that church attendance was Judeo-Christian in nature as many young adults choose to explore a variety of spiritual paths. Even so the search for spiritual growth has increased for Gen Z and this hearkens back to a time in our culture when spiritual development held sway in American communities. Stores were closed on Sundays because that was the day everyone was in church.

This new generation is closer to its recent ancestors in the area of business as well. While the methodology for an early business experience may change, the concept is the same. Going into business means having a product and finding customers.

“Generation Z” is revolutionizing the educational system in many aspects. Thanks in part to a rise in the popularity of entrepreneurship and advancements in technology, high schools and colleges across the globe are including entrepreneurship in their curriculum. Parents of Generation Z might have the image of their child’s first business being a lemonade stand or car wash. While these are great first businesses, Generation Z now has access to social media platforms, website builders, 3D printers, and drop shipping platforms which provides them with additional opportunities to start a business at a young age. The Internet has provided a store front for Generation Z to sell their ideas to people around the world without ever leaving their house.”** While a lemon aid stand is more community focused the new entrepreneur will be globally focused not because he or she has to be but because it will be the most natural thing to do. Yet it is just not that different from the Baby Boomers. What we call entrepreneurial today was called ambition and apprenticeship in the 1930s and 40s.

Like the Millennial Generation, Gen Z is plugged into the world and world concerns. The environment matters to them and they are more likely to become involved with social issues on both a local and global level. This all makes Gen Z an interesting segment of the voting population which should bring their collective voice to bear right about the time the Democratic Party seriously begins to sift for the final 2020 Presidential Candidate.

How the Millennial and Gen Z population views liberty and freedom could change the way America behaves toward itself and the world after 2020.

The idea that America would be better off as a Democracy rather than a Republic is already being entertained by several states wishing to dismantle the Electoral College and replace it with a presidential election strictly by popular vote. A study done by the Pew Research Center found that Generation Z in the U.S. has broadly similar views to Millennials on key political and social issues. For example, “a majority believes that the government should do more to solve their problems.” *** As Millennials and Gen Z choose to expand the rule of government as opposed to the rule of law, our culture should soon experience the changes this will inevitably bring. As recently as 2015 a Gallop Poll found that 47% of Americans polled would vote for a socialist leaning presidential candidate.

50% would not. These percentages are very close and Gen Z may close the gap that their American socialist leaning predecessors of the past could not.

While there are many things about Gen Z that set it apart from other generations, truly, it is very much a repeat of the past on many levels. Refining the Horse and Human Conversation

by Samantha Harvey Irrelevant of a rider’s chosen discipline, whether competitive or pleasure, and no matter their riding experience, I prioritize helping people learn how to focus on where their horse’s brain is in relation to what his body is physically doing. Frequently the horse’s focus is nowhere near where the horse is physically at, which can lead to a multitude of unwanted behaviors.

Whether it is due to deer jumping out, changing the location of a ride, or not doing something the horse had anticipated happening, I want folks to learn how to interrupt the horse’s fixated thought. Then riders need to also learn how to offer a positive alternative as to how they would like the horse to physically and reasonably respond to any given scenario.

In order for the initial refinement of the conversations between horse and human to occur, typically riders need to literally slow down the movement of the horse. The walk unfortunately is frequently seen as the “boring” gait. Because not much value is placed on the slower pace, riders tend to be in passenger “mode” and seem to be distracted or socializing, because they do not view it as “working” their horse yet. The reduced gait energy allows the needed time and opportunity for riders to learn how to have quality conversations with the horse and to establish the standard for both their horse and their own mental focus for the remainder of the session.

Without doing the initial “work” to set the horse up for success, frequently the following phrases are experienced by riders in regards to their horse: “I wonder what he will do when we __________...”

“I hope that he doesn’t ____________...”

“Maybe he’ll be okay if I __________...”

“Last time he did X,Y & Z so I’m sure this time he will ________...”

If the rider is feeling or thinking any of these thoughts, how much quality and proactive communication are they offering their horse? Many horse folks regularly are riding defensively, re-actively (responding to unwanted horse behavior after-the-fact,) and habitually attempt to contain the horse’s unwanted movement rather than addressing its root cause, (his thoughts,) first. This type of interaction can create doubts and distrust between the rider and horse, leading to undesired future experiences.

When a rider is in the saddle, they need to learn how to refine their focus and prioritize assessing a “checklist” reviewing their own concentration and physical state. This can be the beginning of learning how to have the discipline to stay mentally present during a ride which delegates if the rider is in the “driver’s seat” or if the horse is. A few questions people can ask themselves at the beginning of the ride: Where are their thoughts? What is their intention in that specific moment? How are they conveying to the horse what they want? Have they done their own “body check” for the day? Seat bones plugged in? Lower leg underneath them? Upper body balanced and centered? Quiet arms and soft hands?

Fingers unlocked? Head position focused on? Energy level in their seat and leg? Breathing consistently?

This is NOT about making folks pretty riders, rather effective ones. This means if someone is sitting in an unbalanced manner, their aids cannot be specific, their timing will be late and they will often feel “left behind” the horse’s movement because unintentional effort is being put into “staying on” the horse.

Next, the rider should prioritize assessing their horse. Where is the horse’s focus? What is his current willingness to let go of a thought, fixation or distraction and re-direct his thought towards somewhere the rider has specified? What is his response to the rider’s physical pressure of an aid whether it is their seat, leg, rein, or energy? What is his breathing like? If the rider has offered for the horse to re-focus on something else, has the rider’s support helped the horse to mentally relax and blow his nose, licks his lips or sigh? Or does the horse become defensive for the rider’s input? What is the horse’s readiness to keep “trying” or searching for the response the rider is asking for, even after he may have offered unwanted responses? Or does it feel like the horse “quits” if the rider does not accept the horse’s initial response to an aid?

These questions are not designed to judge if one behavior the horse presents is “good” and that another is “bad.” Making assessments allows the rider to have an appropriate and specific starting point on that particular day given the horse’s current mental state and physical behaviors. It informs the rider as to what kind of support the horse needs in that moment in order to help him learn how to work through his distractions or disconnect and to become mentally available towards the rider’s input.

By checking in with themselves and their horse, the rider can better understand how to proceed with their horse. It can help them focus on what needs to be addressed in order to support their horse, and it gives them specific “direction” and appropriate intention for the ride. This facilitates to the horse that he is being “heard” and that the interaction with his rider will build his confidence rather than overwhelm him with critique.

This empowers the rider to follow through and concentrate on areas that are troubling to the horse, rather than just masking them as folks frequently do. By doing this initial preparatory work, the rider is building a quality foundation as a starting point with their horse.

By the time the “real” job or task is presented to the horse, the rider will already have established effective communication tools. Having a mentally available and willing equine partner increases the chances of a safe, positive and enjoyable riding experience for horse and human.

Weed of the Month - Field Bindweed

At last, dog days of summer are upon us. As much as we enjoy our summers in the inland northwest, the weeds seem to “one up” that enjoyment level! If you get a chance to continue treating weeds that you couldn’t get to in the spring, go for it. Certain perennial weeds have long flowering periods and can be treated well in to the summer—and if summer annual weeds are the target, we’re just now approaching the bolting stage of their growth. Our office is a resource for the public to utilize for control/management advice and weeds identification. Get in touch with us if you need assistance.

Weed of the month is Field Bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis), a state listed noxious weed in the Morningglory family. This is one of those quiet monsters—it’s not in the forefront in our area like Spotted Knapweed, Thistles, Hawkweeds, Toadflaxes, etc., but just as destructive. It’s a long lived, herbaceous perennial with vine-like stems that create a tangled mess.

Flowers are bell shaped and typically white in color, sometimes pink. The leaves vary in size and shape so the viney, prostrate growth habit is the key identifying factor (aside from the flowers once they appear). This specimen will send a taproot over 10 feet deep, and put out horizontal creeping roots about a foot or two from the surface. The seeds do not disburse very far from the parent plants, but there can be up to 500 per plant. The spread is almost equal between the root systems and the seed.

Field Bindweed is found in pastures, cropland, roadsides, abandoned lots and commercial lots. It prefers fertile production crop ground, that’s where it has a tendency to be the most prolific; although it can tolerate and inhabit some of the most extreme conditions too. I once found some Field Bindweed skeletons in the crawl space under my house! The little bit of light coming through the vents in the foundation was just enough for it to germinate and grow.

If an infestation is caught early enough, hand pulling can be effective, but not if it has had an opportunity to develop a full root system. Mowing is not effective due to the low profile growth habit. Repeated cultivation can manage it, but you need to stay on it constantly throughout the growing season for several consecutive years. Herbicide control can go one of two ways, depending on the use site (refer to the labels)…Triclopyr products (Vastlan®, Garlon®, Crossbow®) as well as Fluroxypyr (Vista XRT®) provides suppression, but not full control. To achieve legitimate control with herbicides on Field Bindweed, you need to use a chemistry that persists in the soil, such as Aminocyclopyrachlor products (Perspective®, Method®).

Imazapyr products (Polaris®, Habitat® & generics) also provide solid control if killing desirable grasses can be tolerated. This particular weed almost needs to be treated in similar fashion as Leafy Spurge (the one I presented in my previous installment) due to the deep root system. The good news is, Field Bindweed has a long flowering stage—June until the first killing frost.

Therefore, your treatment window is long.

BCGA Garden Tour Set for July 7, 2019

by Ann Warwick The Annual Bonner County Gardeners Association garden tour takes place on Sunday, July 7, from 10 am to 5 pm. Featured this year are eight interesting gardens, all conveniently located in Sandpoint. Tickets are $15 per person, and can be purchased at any of the gardens. Get your garden loving friends together for this festive day and just have fun observing the many clever ideas presented.

The 2019 Garden Tour gardens are: The Secret Garden, 602 Creekside Lane, Sandpoint. Owners: Nancy and John Ellis.This colorful display of plantings make this “secret” garden a magical sight. Look for whimsical accents, including a birdhouse replica of the old Panhandle Mill built by owner and grand-daughter. Enjoy the terraced backyard and a decorative and useful garden shed.

Another Dimension, 608 Creekside Lane, Sandpoint. Owner: Teri Norris. This garden features a formal view from the street, with a small pond shaded by a Japanese maple and floral islands. The back yard transports one from a city setting to a serene rural environment enhanced by natural plantings framing calm waters, wildlife habitat and forested hills.

Slough View, 2211 Browning Way, Sandpoint. Owners: Ann and Scott Torpie. This landscaping was established in 2016-17 with a focus on weaving in as many native plants as possible to preserve the natural setting. A gravel path leads to the water’s edge, then follow the woodchip path along the water back up to the driveway.

Moose Garden, 2204 Browning Way, Sandpoint. Anita Perry, owner. This colorful garden sits on a two lot site and continues to be a “labor of love” of fourteen years. A beautiful variety of texture and colors holds the eye; don’t miss the vibrant creeping Jenny and unique shaping of the Japanese Maple. Meandering borders edge a shade garden, large rocks accent the garden. The back yard can be viewed but not accessed due to removal of a large tree in progress.

Beckoning Oasis, 1712 Poplar St. Sandpoint. Owner: Penny Barton. This stunning garden invites one to enter a magical setting of flowers, fruits, vines, and art pieces. Abundant seating throughout creates the desire to stay and observe the amazing array of foliage and floral color and to take in all the details of this compact garden. A large apple tree resembling a leafy parasol creates a shade garden and wood structures define social areas. A productive vegetable garden is tucked in among ornamentals.

Plant your Love and let it Grow, 502 Marion, Sandpoint. Nancy and Lenny Hess, owners. This lovely double lot garden in the heart of Sandpoint has been tended by nancy and Lenny Hess since 2003. Throughout the years, many herbaceous perennials, trees, and shrubs have been planted and nurtured.. Be sure to take note of the large leafed Japanese Butterbur and decorative garden accessories.

The Community Garden, Sixth and Pine, Sandpoint. Pat Wentworth and Elissa Wadds, hosts. We’ve all driven by, but few of us have walked through this very worthwhile community project, with 72 plots, each reflecting the personality and resourcefulness of the individual gardener. Learn what amazing productivity can occur in a small space, and take some ideas home. This exciting garden is truly a gem of the community.

Summertime In North Idaho

Ahh, warm days, shorts and sandals, time on the lake or hiking in the mountains--this is the time of year that we all love. We envision barbeques in the back yard, cool drinks enjoyed in the ambience of floral abundance, and a leisurely stroll to the veggie garden for a fresh salad for dinner. We’ve worked hard to create this setting, and we can now sit back and enjoy it.

That is the theory, and the objective. Reality can intrude, but we should try to resist. Don’t look at those weeds poking out from under the roses. Ignore those holes in the lettuce as long as you can. When it becomes intolerable, make a game of a midnight raid on the garden to catch slugs, cutworms, and other adversaries. Try to practice a little patience and let the insects enjoy a little of the crop. Remember, those caterpillars are next season’s butterflies. Keep the insecticides in the garden shed unless the invasion becomes overwhelming. Birds and predatory insects will control the creatures to some extent, and healthy, well nourished plants can fend off minor attacks.

Make no mistake, we have been presented with a timeless framework for self-government, but in order to preserve this wonderful gift, we must hold these principles close to our hearts. Director U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Recently in the news and in our local conversations the phrase “social justice” has become a popular term to address perceived unfairness in culture in everything from education, to job opportunities and financial needs, to housing. It is a big subject but not a new one.

Adams, Bell and Griffin (1997) define social justice as both a process and a goal. “The goal of social justice education is full and equal participation of all groups in a society that is mutually shaped to meet their needs. Social justice includes a vision of society that is equitable and all members are physically and psychologically safe and secure.”

The concept of Social Justice is driven by the desire of the community to see “social mobility” in the people through distribution of wealth and to see safety nets in place throughout.

Some authors such as Friedrich Hayek criticize the concept of social justice, arguing the lack of objective, accepted moral standard; and that while there is a legal definition of what is just and equitable “there is no test of what is socially unjust”, and further that social justice is often used for the reallocation of resources based on an arbitrary standard which may in fact be inequitable or unjust.* So views about how to deal with societal ills are still far apart but a robust conversation continues.

Health Impacts of Burning Fossil Fuel

It is late May and yet, the hills in the distance are hazed by smoke from thousands of acres in flames in Alberta due to a recent, unprecedented heat wave – in May!! A slight heavy sore feeling in my throat and upper chest is very reminiscent of weeks on end with smoke last summer and fall. Looking at the plants it seems like they are racing to bloom before the heat and drought sets in. I have never seen bright yellow ragwort on rocky slopes in full bloom with leaves curled up! Good to be prepared for a new smoke season to protect yourself and others from its health hazards.

Particulate emissions come both from smoke and burning fossil fuels. A Yale Climate Communications Study from December 2018 reports this month (1) that 73% of Americans are aware of fossil fuel particulate emissions health impacts, but only 55% of those could name at least one and only very few specific ones.

Only 48% could name one population that is more vulnerable to air. The American Lung Association (2) lists many groups at risk from air pollution, including children, seniors, low-income families; people with lung disease, diabetes, and cardio-vascular disease; people who work or exercise outdoors or live/work near busy highways. Excess exposure increases need for medical attention and emergency room visits, and puts children at greater risk of lung disease as they age. People with CV disease and diabetes face a higher risk of heart attacks or strokes and shorter live spans.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) (3), “An estimated 4.2 million premature deaths globally are linked to ambient air pollution, mainly from heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, and acute respiratory infections in children.”

The biggest problem is particles less than 2.5 microns. They not only come from smoke, but also from burning fossil fuels. As they penetrate deeply into blood vessels of the lungs, heart, and brain, they cause long-term disease in those organs, as well as reduced birth weight and preterm births. They also may affect diabetes and neurological development in children. In 2013, the WHO determined outdoor pollution to be a carcinogen to humans.

This Yale study illustrates how unaware most Americans are of the full impact of air pollution by smoke and the burning of fossil fuels and that it affects different populations to larger degrees. Fossil fuels have allowed our culture and economy to flourish and we will continue to rely it on them for some time to come. However, that doesn’t mean that we can’t address the health impacts. We don’t just throw our garbage behind our house either!

A very recent article in the Scientific American (4) asserts that currently officials in the White House and the Environmental Protection Agency with ties to the fossil fuel, auto, and tobacco industry, are trying to undermine the science underlying health impacts of air pollution. Back in 1993, the Harvard Six Cities Study, crucial for implementing regulations under the Clean Air Act, encountered fierce resistance (5).

Currently the EPA doesn’t have a committee that is qualified to review particulate pollution and health impact science in order to review current standards as required under the Clean Air Act. Additionally the review process has been compromised due to industry influence. It is an old tactic of confusing “the public, dispute scientific evidence about health risks posed by their products and actions, and impede regulations.” (4) You might consider providing public comment if the EPA proposes new standards that don’t align with science.

When the smoke first appeared a few days ago, I slipped into outright depression. I love spending time outdoors in nature. The idea of having to live with smoke not just in August but possibly May through September was more than I could handle. Looking deeper all I really could feel was a profound sense of helplessness and sadness... sadness at possibly losing all this beauty - seeing it go up in flames, not being able to breathe freely, my grandkids not being to play outside.

Luckily there is help to be had during smoky days. HEPA air purifiers are a must these summers. If you have air conditioning make sure to replace filters. If not, the Coop carries filters that tape to regular fans, which can be fitted into windows to force air through them.

The first line of defense for the body to deal with smoke is the mucous membranes in the respiratory system. Breathing through your nose rather than mouth will assist natural filtration.

Nasal lavages (www.nasopure.com) with saline solution (1 tsp salt and ½ tsp baking soda per cup of filtered water) once to twice a day remove smoke particles and microbes directly

and strengthen the respiratory tract.

Herbal teas of Mullen, Coltsfoot, Red Clover, and Yarrow do the same for the lungs. Hopefully, being armed with more information to stock your medicine cabinet and prepping your house, you will too. Jennifer Sirangelo - Most Creative 4-H Leader Council CEO You Have Never Heard Of

Every year Fast Company Magazine makes it its business to know who the movers, shakers, and creative minds in social circles, science, technology, business and marketing strategy rooms are and where they are. In 2017 Fast Company chose Jennifer Sirangelo President and CEO, National 4-H Council as one of those creative people. Specifically, for her efforts to rebrand 4-H through the “Grow True Leaders” campaign.

If you are one of the many Americans who still associate 4-H with animal husbandry cowboy boots and the county fair, it’s time for a serious update. Bonner County alone offers more than 70 4-H project choices many of which have nothing to do with animals.

“4-H offers school and community programs in robotics, rocketry, and computer coding—which increasingly provide students in cash-strapped school districts, from Appalachia to Ferguson, Missouri, with their sole opportunity for hands-on STEM education. In 2016, CEO Jennifer Sirangelo launched the “Grow True Leaders” rebranding initiative to promote the diversity of 4-H programs and participants—with the aim of boosting membership from 6 million to 10 million by 2025. A splashy event at the Four Seasons Hotel in Washington, D.C., in March, for example, honored past 4-H’ers including actress Aubrey Plaza and Atlanta Hawks forward Kent Bazemore. “Our alumni are at different places than you might think—from NASA to the NBA to Facebook,” Sirangelo says. “Ten governors and over 50 members of Congress are 4-H alumni.”* *Fast Company Most Creative People 2017

Farmers Markets 2019 Season Idaho’s farmers markets continue to be a popular location for purchasing local food and agriculture products including fresh vegetables, fruit, meat, honey and more. Farmers markets are an excellent source of quality, local products, and these venues truly showcase the bounty of Idaho agriculture.

There are 45 farmers markets throughout the state spanning northern Idaho to eastern Idaho and many places in between.

Summer has begun and most of us are trying to cram as much activity into the daylight hours as possible. One way we accomplish this is to either spend less time in the kitchen or more time with the grill. Sometimes, it’s both. And it is no secret that more and more people are choosing better quality foods and less of them. More people are watching their weight. If this last paragraph applies to you, or you wish it did, here are a couple if encouraging thoughts. First, eating well is easier than you think. And second, it is cheaper than most of us believe.

Salads are great, but not the kind we are used to getting in restaurants. They are not meant to be filling or particularly nutrient dense. However, at home you can have both nutrition and a filled stomach easily and quickly with just a couple of changes.

1. Switch from salad greens to nutrient dense spinach and kale. Blend these together with some shredded carrot, chopped celery, and green onion in 1 gallon freezer bags and keep it in the crisper. It is enough salad for three days for most adults. Just take a serving out, and add 1/2 cup of tuna or chicken, and your dressing of choice. Croutons, crackers or rice crackers makes a nice addition but for those going gluten free, chopped nuts make a nice addition.

2. Use that crock pot! Almost every supermarket has sales on meats each week. Some stores heavily discount meats over the weekend early in the mornings. Some offer such meats as assorted pork chops for as little as $1.97 / lb. Chicken can be as little as $ .69 / lb. Shop the deals and put the savings in the freezer. These can be all cooked in the crock pot at the same time while you are at work. Meat can then be frozen in portions for soups, salads, or to add to main courses.

3. The beauty of the crock pot is that a single meal can be made in one “pot” and taken to the table with ease. Another great way to do this is by making a quiche. Once considered too “girly” of a dish, this potential complete dinner in one dish is beginning to get the respect it deserves.

For those of us with chickens, when there is an over abundance of eggs and we can’t sell them all, egg based dinners become common. You likely have already discovered the wonder of the “Fridge Fritatta”. Leftovers of all kinds can go into a fritatta and it makes a super easy dish for Sunday afternoon dinner and a movie.

So here is a great quiche recipe that is so easy it should be a staple for all young folk It’s durable, with a limited lifetime just learning to cook. Enjoy!

Easy Spinach Quiche Line a 9” pie plate or quiche dish with either homemade or purchased pie dough. With a fork, poke a few holes in the crust and set aside.

Ingredients: 1/2 cup chopped yellow onion 1 cup fresh, chopped mushrooms 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil 3 cups fresh spinach torn into very small pieces 1 cup chopped fully cooked ham 5 large eggs 3 cups shredded cheese of your choicecheddar or jack works great 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper Pinch of good quality garlic salt.

In a heavy skillet saute the onion and mushrooms in the oil on medium heat until tender.

Add the fresh spinach and cook until slightly wilted. Add the ham and heat through.

In a large bowl whisk together the eggs, cheese, pepper, and garlic salt. Add the spinach & ham mixture. Blend well.

Pour into prepared crust and spread evenly.

Bake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

Quiche lends itself well to the accompaniment of fresh fruit in season. Again, for those who are gluten free, simply omit the crust and grease the dish before pouring in the egg mix. Ross Creek Cedars - A Family Day Trip

Ross Creek Cedar is a grove of western red cedars, some of which are more than 8 feet in diameter. An interpretive walking tour, slightly less than a mile in length, explains the area ecology and history.

Visitors to northwest Montana often find an ancient forest rivaling the spectacular beauty of the giant sequoias of northern California. Some trees in the grove are more than 400 years old.

Area loggers first noted the beauty of the grove and then worked to protect the tall trees.

In 1960, the Kootenai National Forest set aside the Ross Creek Cedar grove and established it as a scenic area protecting it for scientific and recreational value.

Many of the ancient western red cedars are more than 8 feet in diameter and loom 175 feet above Ross Creek CedarsRoss Creek. The self-guided .9 mile loop nature trail through the grove takes about an hour to 1-1/2 hours.

The meandering path leads past informative signs about the history and ecology of the many plant and animal species native to the grove.

Ross CreekThe nature trail often follows the banks of Ross Creek which often runs hidden beneath the rocky stream bottom. The waters of Ross come from the rugged alpine basins and peaks of the upper Ross Creek valley.

Many of these trees still growing in the grove today were here before Columbus set sail for the new world.

The turnoff to the Ross Creek Cedars is found a half mile past the south end of Bull Lake off Montana Highway 56 - known locally as the Bull Lake Road. A 4-mile long, paved windy road climbs to the parking area at the Cedars.

Be aware there may be cyclists and hikers on the narrow road. If time permits, stop at the scenic turnout about 2 miles up the road for a scenic view of the Cabinet Mountains and Bull River valley. You’ll be able to hear Ross Creek Falls from this point.

One of several wooden bridges in the Ross Creek Cedar Grove area Don’t forget to bring your camera for the grove and the excellent view of the Bull River Valley and the Cabinet Mountains. There are picnic tables and handicapped accessible toilets near the entrance to the grove.

The Importance of Business Planning

Based upon activity we are seeing here in the bank and the questions we are being asked, many businesses seem to be rebounding from prior unstable economic conditions. Increased activity in new home construction, existing home remodeling, and new start up businesses demonstrate growth and increased confidence.

As a banker, it is encouraging to see this type of activity – all economic indicators that things are better, or getting better, for a good number of people living in our communities. And it would be my hope that we are able to sustain the momentum and share in many long term successes.

It seems now is an appropriate time to write about the tools that if utilized, can play a significant role in achieving success regardless of the size of your business, whether you have been in business for some time, or are just in the dreaming stages of going into business for yourself.

There’s a quote somewhere that states to get where you want to go, you need a plan. Same holds true for your business. As a business owner, you wear many hats but there are four primary areas that are critical to your success. They are Operations, Marketing, Management, and Finance.

As the Operations Manager, to begin you need a detailed road map, or a Business Plan. Start simply. Describe the business, the product or service, and the purpose. Your road map will also include things like an activity timeline, your hours of operation, your customer service philosophy, and location.

What’s your vision? In otherwords, what do you want to be or become?

Your mission is next. What you are going to do to achieve the vision? For example, “Country Flavors is dedicated to providing top quality ice cream products, made from local ingredients, and offered at competitive prices to our valued customers in northern Idaho”. It’s pretty clear, isn’t it, as to what they are offering and how they are going to go about it.

Now that you have a good idea as to your vision and mission, here’s where the roadmap, or the “how” you are going to achieve results, comes into play.

In the case of our friends starting their ice cream business, a primary goal could be to establish a unique market niche founded upon a differentiated product line utilizing local flavors. Another goal could include growing and expanding retail presence in northern Idaho, and a growth goal could include expand packaged goods covering the United States.

Each goal will then develop a set of supporting objectives. To reach their goal of growing presence in northern Idaho, objectives such as a second retail outlet, increased retail sales in the existing location, increased store traffic by 20 customers a day, and achieving 100 customers per day in the second location help in the road to success.

Your management hat requires the development of things such as the business structure, job descriptions, personnel polices, an organizational chart, the need for outside services, and insurance.

Now it’s time to determine how you are going to let everyone know about your business! The third hat, or the Marketing Hat, requires more than just hanging the sign over the door. Here’s where you will want to develop your product or service description and the life cycle of your products. You will want to identify your customer demographics (who are they and where are they), complete marketing research, and identify and analyze your competitors. Think about your marketing strategy in terms of price, promotion, place, and product, and establish an advertising budget.

Probably one of the more difficult hats you will wear is the finance hat.

This is what really determines the success or failure of your business. Be realistic about your startup costs and sales forecasts. Establish a cash flow projection, and identify cash flow assumptions. You will need to know how much you will have to have on hand for working capital. Once you have worked through these numbers, create a balance sheet. Conduct a thorough break even analysis. Be honest with yourself...most start-up businesses fail because they are under capitalized or they overstated sales and understated expenses.

Early on, develop a working relationship with your commercial banker. He or she has a vested interest in your success. The partnership you create with your bank is important. Your banker will want to review your business plan with you and will offer suggestions for items you may have overlooked.

There are also a number of resources available to you, such as the SBA U.S. Small Business Adminstration (visit sba.gov.wa, which is the Seattle District office serving Washington State and Northern Idaho); SCORE (Counselors to America’s Small Business at score.org); the Small Business Development Centers at idahosbdc.org); and the Women’s Business Centers at snapwa.org Having a plan will provide a number of positive results, such as improved leadership, employee confidence, teamwork, reduction in waste, peace of mind and probably most importantly, increased profitabilty and sustainability.

My Sister’s “Baptism” I’m not sure when it was exactly that my oldest younger sister, Karolyn (yes, spelled with a “K” so our initials would be the same) began to adopt a skeptical of attitude toward my motives. But I suspect it could have been on that hot Oklahoma afternoon when she ran in excited trust to fill the bucket with water her older brother had handed her from his perch on the tree limb. Returning hurriedly, she strained her tiny muscles to their utmost in order to lift with both hands the now sloshing bucket to my downstretched hand. Her expression revealed her curious innocence as to what I could possibly want with a bucket of water in the tree.

As that little soaked innocent ran screaming for the protection of her ever-vigilant mother, I knew I was in for it. But like all nine-year-old boys, I knew that my momentary rush of adrenalin was worth the worst she could dish out.

As I think back on my cunning trickery, I gain new insight on that most ancient of all tricks. How that evil serpent’s heart must have raced within his demonic breast as he sat, coiled in the Edenic tree, knowing his evil intent for our primal Mother.

Sam Owen Fire District Annual Pancake Breakfast: July 27, 2019

Gather here! Gather near! Pancakes will be falling from the sky as firemen flip flapjacks as fast as they can on Saturday, July 27. The Sam Owen Fire District will be hosting its annual Pancake Breakfast, so take a break and forget about cooking. Start your day off right with a scenic drive along Highway 200 to Sam Owen Fire Station #1 at the junction of Peninsula Road and Highway 200 in Hope. A steaming hot breakfast of pancakes, eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, juice and coffee or tea breakfast will be served from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for only $5.

After breakfast take time to tour the station, meet the firefighters, EMTs and Co-Fire Chiefs Stu Eigler and Tim Scofield. You’ll have the opportunity to sit in the trucks, meet Smokey, the firedog and try on the equipment.

It’s surprising how heavy it is. There will be free handouts and fire chief hats for the children.

This is the major community event and only fundraiser for the Sam Owen Fire District. The monies raised are used for supplies for the fire house, including uniforms, communication devices, and important firefighting equipment. Over 60 volunteers, plus the firefighters and co-fire chiefs spend untold hours to collect donations, cook the meal and serve you a delicious breakfast. “Be careful! CAREFUL! Put in some more butter! Oh, my GOSH!” The wife, startled at her husband’s violent reaction, dashes to the fridge to get some butter. “You’re cooking too many at once. TOO MANY! Turn them! TURN THEM NOW!” The wife, concerned by the status of her husband’s mental state,forgets about the butter and goes running to the eggs.

“WE NEED BUTTER! Are you CRAZY??? Where are we going to get the butter? They’re going to stick! HURRY!” “CAREFUL about the eggs! CAREFUL. You NEVER listen to me when you’re cooking! Never! Turn them quickly! Oh not that quickly, don’t you know how to cook? Are you insane? Turn the EGGS!” At this point, the wife starts crying, since she has no idea what to do.She gasps, “What is WRONG with you? I know how to cook eggs.”The husband simply smiles and replies, “I just wanted to show you what it feels like while I’m driving with you in the car.”

What It Is That Makes Us Who We Are

The CO-Op Gas & Supply Company has been around for a very long time.

We are about to complete our 85th year of continuous business in the north Idaho area as a cooperative. Eighty Five years is a long time to get to know neighbors, to lose quite a few of them and meet new ones. It is a long time to see industry come, and go, and be taken over and changed. Sometimes for the better - sometimes not.

The walls of the Ponderay complex have seen quite a lot of activity over the last 23 years since the store moved from Church Street in Sandpoint.

But it is the walls inside The Pie Hut, Evans Brothers Coffee, and Matchwood Brewing that could tell you some stories. Stories of intrigue, of questionable characters, of money and powerful families, late night meetings and decisions made while snow fell in the cold outside and little more warmth inside. In fact the whole Granary District in Sandpoint is where our story really begins and where it may come full circle one day. The elevator still stands, after all, and tells about the CO-OP just by continuing to exist in that place.

In 1934 the cooperative was born with the intention of helping area farmers get their crops to market. It was during the depression that a large group of people for the time felt compelled to band together to help eachother get the goods and services they all needed to survive the difficult times. Within two years the founders realized they needed to expand. The name was changed from Grange Gas & Supply to Co-op Gas & Supply and immediately motions were passed to print stock certificates, make agreements with the local creamery, to buy dynamite, and build a warehouse. This with only 214 members but a solid financial base and business landscape that allowed increased growth and development. By 1938 committes were established for Finance, Building and Grounds, and Stock & Equipment. They never looked back.

Some of our employees have been here for more than 30 years having had the experience of both shopping at the CO-OP as a 4-H member, FFA member, or just because their bridle needed new reins or the cow stomped the milk pail. The CO-OP has always been the place to go for just about everything farm, ranch, or home related. Our store used to stock everything from flour to washing machines. We even sold CO-OP Tractors back in the day. By the time it was all said and done we had a creamery where you could actually buy an ice cream cone and a dynamite magazine before government rules changed. We had the grain elevator, a gas station, a tire shop, a credit union, and a seemingly endless supply of whatchamadingits and chingazzies. The vision of those early cooperative leaders is astonishing. While the board minutes make them seem fearless, it is more likely they were filled with courage. It was the Depression, after all, and it took quite a lot of faith in neighbors and each other to make it all work.

Eighty five years later the CO-OP is not far removed from its roots of community, of faith, cooperative business practices, of patriotism and willingness to be courageous in challenging times. Community is in our DNA. Today the community we support looks like helping people with cancer, when a home burns down, when a 4-H club needs prizes for a fundraiser or when an Eagle Scout candidate needs help with that final project. We buy 4-H livestock, support the return of FFA to our schools, and encourage youth to learn everything from gardening to leadership and how to take advantage of working here at the entry level by leveraging it toward a career. We offer scholarships and support education on numerous levels. We are proud of all of this.

While some aspects of the cooperative have changed, the reason we were stablished in the first place remains - community support. Faith, courage to move forward even in challenging times and our deep abiding respect for freedom and liberty and the cooperative way of life. Thanks for letting us be a part of yours. Land Values 2019: Where Are They Now? Jim Haynes, Associate Broker, Realm Partners

Vacant land prices followed national housing trends with large run-ups during 2003 to 2007. This was followed by a significant decline from 2007 to 2010. Since then prices in Bonner and Boundary Counties have stayed relatively flat while Kootenai County has seen a significant rise in the last three years. Below is a chart showing the median sales price for vacant 5-10 acre lots for the three northern Idaho counties from 2003 to May 31, 2018.

The median sales price of a parcel of vacant land 5-10 acres in size in Kootenai County was $60,250 in 2003 and by 2007 the median sales price had risen to $170,000. In 2010 the median sales price had dropped to $83,000, greater than a 280% rise followed by a 50% drop. From 2010 to 2016 prices in Kootenai County had slight variability and were flat. However, over the last three years Kootenai County lot prices have surged with the median sales price for the 12 months ending May 31, 2019 up 63% from calendar year 2016. Bonner or Boundary County have exhibited a very slight upward trend and not the volatility in prices seen in Kootenai County.

Considering the first half of both charts, one can see that the number of lots sold started to increase before the sales price of lots increased. In 2004 the number of 5-10 acre vacant land parcels began to decrease while the price of comparable parcels continued to increase for another two to three years, when prices began to fall. In 2012 Kootenai County lot sales began to increase and it took four years for lot prices to start their upward trend, slightly longer than during the last cycle. For the last few years the number of lots sold has begun to increase in all three northern Idaho counties. The inventory of 5-10 acre lots has decreased over the last two years. At the current sales pace there are 11 months of inventory in both Kootenai and Bonner County. In Boundary County there are 2.2 years of 5-10 acre vacant lot inventory. Two years ago, those inventories were 1.3, 2.2 and 4.2 years respectively. Inventories are tightening which puts upward pressure on prices.

What about other vacant land lots of variable size? Previously the discussion has been based on 5-10 acre lots, and prices discussed are based on the lot regardless of size. Below is a table based on actual land sales regardless of parcel size for the previous 12 months ending May 31, 2019.

(Some high value properties were excluded from the analysis on the smaller lot sales to ensure prices represent raw land.)

From the summarized information above one can determine that the price per acre drops as the acreage size of the land purchase increases.

Historically, the price per acre of property decreased the further north in the Panhandle a purchase is made. However, prices in Boundary County have strengthened in recent years while Bonner County prices have not strengthened as much to the point that prices are very nearly the same over all sizes of vacant land lots between Bonner and Boundary Counties.

Kootenai County vacant land prices continue to demand a premium over Bonner and Boundary County vacant land prices.

Property owners of raw property purchased 12 years ago saw values drop by half to two thirds over three years. In general, raw land real estate has been recovering slowly since that time except for Kootenai County recently.
