from the president...

This has been a wonderful year of celebration and recognition at Copiah-Lincoln Community College. In September, the Wesson Campus formally celebrated the long-awaited completion of the Co-Lin Pedestrian Corridor. The corridor provides a beautifully landscaped area through the center of campus for students, employees, and alumni to enjoy for many years to come. We are very proud of how this campus improvement represents our college and our commitment to the future.

In October, we were honored to host the Mississippi Association of Colleges (MAC) annual conference in Natchez. The Mississippi Association of Colleges and Universities was established in 1921 with the goal of promoting goodwill among colleges and universities, to stimulate academic and professional cooperation among the membership, to consider common problems, and to pursue those matters of common interest to the membership. At the conclusion of the conference in Natchez, I was pleased to pass the role of MAC President on to Dr. Mark Keenum, President of Mississippi State University.

Student enrollment at all three campuses of Co-Lin remained level in the fall of 2016 with approximately 3,000 students. I am very proud that over 74 percent of our students are enrolled full time and 76 percent of our students at Co-Lin are from our 7 county service district. Co-Lin’s reputation of outstanding instructional programs, dedicated faculty, and supportive staff have made us the first choice for many of the high school students in our district.

Our greatest challenge this year occurred because of the State of Mississippi’s ongoing budget crisis. Budget cuts at Co-Lin during the fiscal year totaled over $700,000. Next year will also be challenging as Mississippi’s community colleges experienced an additional 28 million dollars in state budget cuts. At Co-Lin, we will begin this 2018 fiscal year with 1.2 million dollars less in state appropriations than in fiscal year 2017. I am pleased that our administration and Board of Trustees have taken appropriate actions to balance the budget and are committed to providing our students with the very best learning and training experience possible.

The Co-Lin Foundation enjoyed another record-breaking year in collecting donations and gifts from alumni and supporters of the college. Our foundation assets have increased to almost $9 million and provide a much-needed financial resource to the college. It is my hope that all of our Co-Lin friends will continue to aide in our growth and development through their donations to the Co-Lin Foundation.

This President’s Report includes wonderful information about the success of our students and faculty at Co-Lin. I am impressed each year with the enthusiasm and desire of our students and staff to help make Co-Lin The Place To Be.

CAMPUS UPDATES The water tower on the Wesson Campus was repainted to display the Co-Lin logo.

The Early Childhood Academy Resource and Referral Center was opened on the Natchez Campus. The center offers childcare providers and families instructional aids, books, and software.

The Natchez campus constructed a Monarch Butterfly garden after receiving a $10,000 U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service grant to provide habitat for butterflies while on their migratory path.

Construction began on Co-Lin’s new women’s honor residence hall on the Wesson Campus. The 2

The Library Assessment Center on the Wesson Campus was opened.

The center will be used primarily for MSVCC and Adult Education/ GED testing.

The Natchez Campus completed the new Diesel Equipment Technology class and lab area.

22,000 square foot two-story residence hall will have 28 double bedrooms, space for 56 students.

For the fourth consecutive year, Co-Lin’s Medical Laboratory Technology Bowl Team captured first place in the Tri-State Mississippi, Louisiana, and Tennessee Student Bowl Competition.

The Seawolves Underwater Robotics Engineering team placed 9th at the International MATE ROV competition held in Long Beach, CA.

The Nu Kappa Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda claimed five national awards at the National Leadership Conference held in Anaheim, CA.

Athletics Wolfpack Golf Coach Ronny Ross received the Dave Williams National Coach of the Year Award for NJCAA Divison II.

Madison Andrews was named a Coca-Cola Silver Scholar and to the All-Mississippi Academic Team. Andrews was also named a Lyceum Scholar at the University of Mississippi.

John Ethan Coleman was named a Coca-Cola Silver Scholar and to the All-Mississippi Academic Team. Coleman was also named a Tennessee Valley Authority Scholar.

Sebastian Osorio finished the 2017 Tennis season ranked No. 8 nationally and advanced to the NJCAA National Tournament quarterfinals. Osorio was the only MACJC player to receive ITA All-American recognition.

Lady Wolves Basketball Coach Gwyn Young earned his 900th career win defeating Meridian Community College 76-70.

Charlette Smith was selected as the student HEADWAE (Higher Education Appreciation Day- Working for Academic Excellence) honoree.

The Wolves won the NJCAA District D title at Grand Bear Golf Course in Biloxi. This qualified the Wolves for the NJCAA DII Men’s Golf Championship at Longbow Golf Course in Mesa, AZ, where they finished 11th.

Institutional highlights

Co-Lin and Lincoln County officially became a certified ACT Work Ready Community. This initiative is designed to assist in developing the workforce pipeline to provide skilled workers for employers. Initiative leaders attended the ACT Work Ready Communities Academy and dedicated countless hours to receiving the certification.

The Department of the Army presented the Natchez Campus Police Force with a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of their assistance provided during the Army’s Innovative Readiness Training.

Co-Lin was named No. 3 in the Top 10 Gold-level Military Friendly® School Awards for 2017 by Victory Media.

Military Friendly® Awards showcase the powerful and effective programs of more than 200 companies and 1,200 post-secondary schools that were designated as Military Friendly®.

Charles Tolliver, Commander of Chapter No. 680 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart (second from the left) presented Purple Heart College designation to (from left), President Dr. Ronnie Nettles, Natchez Campus Vice President Teresa Busby, Simpson County Center Vice President Dr. Dewayne Middleton, and Veterans Services Director Dr. Tim Lea. The Wesson Campus hosted the 2016 Lamplighters Conference for over 45 attendees. Each Mississippi Community College nominated distinguished instructors to attend the conference which focused on student success and continuing education.

The Foundation received a $252,000 Hardy Wilson/Copiah County Medical Center Partner for Education Grant to be used for students in the Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) program at the college’s Wesson Campus and Simpson County Center.

Mike Whatley Honda in Brookhaven presented a donation to Foundation Executive Director DJ Preiss on behalf of Ally Financial for Co-Lin’s Automotive Technology program.

BestColleges.com ranked Co-Lin the No. 4 Best Community College in Mississippi. Rankings were based on acceptance, retention, graduation, and enrollment rates. Colleges are also assessed on academic outcomes, affordability, and the breadth and depth of online learning opportunities.

Employee Recognition Wesson Campus Science Instructor Duane Burt’s KDMC Obesity and Sports Medicine/Exercise Science research was referenced in a new book, “Sprint 8 Cardio Protocol, The Perfect Fitness Solution.”

Simpson County Center Director of Student Services Anika Floyd, Natchez Campus Math Instructor Amanda Hood, and Wesson Campus Director of Libraries and Learning Resources Jackie Quinn all received their doctorate degree from Mississippi State University.

Simpson County Center instructor Laurie Gambrell was named the 2017 HEADWAE honoree.

Zachary Moulds, Vanessa Murphy and Bryon Conville graduated with the eighth class of the Mississippi Community College Leadership Academy (MCCLA).

Chris Warren, Dr. Dewayne Middleton, Zachary Moulds, and Dr. Brenda Orr attended the Adult Learning Focused Institution (ALFI) Summit.

Natchez Campus instructor Jan Swoveland was named Humanities Council Instructor of the Year and received the SOAR Golden Apple Award.

Natchez Campus Vice President Teresa Busby received the Mississippi State University Humanities Alumni Award.

Foundation & Alumni

The Foundation inducted seven new members into its Hall of Fame. Inductees were the Beall Family; Brookhaven/Lincoln County Rotary Club; Elizabeth Hadskey High; Mississippi Humanities Council; Tommy and the late Annette Sasser; Bradley and Nena Smith; and Jimmy and Tammy Torrey.

Katie Grace Culpepper of Brookhaven was crowned Co-Lin’s Homecoming Queen during 2016 Homecoming festivities.

The annual scholarship reception awarded over $275,000 to more than 200 students.

The Low Gross winning team at the 17th Annual Natchez Golf Classic was Concordia Bank Team #2.

The Copiah Bank team of Jeremy Winborne, Stephen Bozeman, Warren Hood, and Grant McDonniel claimed the corporate championship in the Foundation’s 24th annual Wesson Foundation Golf Classic.

Community Involvement • Art Club donated time and money to the Brookhaven Animal Rescue League.

• Natchez Campus helped with Special Olympics.

• Simpson Co. Center participated in Keep Simpson County Beautiful.

• Various clubs participated in Read Across America.

Natchez and Simpson County hosted Veterans Day activities.

Members of the Beta Xi Psi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa picked up garbage on their two mile Adopt-A-Highway section of Highway 49 in Simpson County.

All three campuses of Co-Lin collected donations for victims of the Baton Rouge flood.
