PLAN NOW. GIVE NOW. DONOR-ADVISED FUNDS ARE SIMPLE TO ESTABLISH AND EASY TO OPERATE. They allow you to address a wide variety of issues and fulfill your charitable interests as they evolve over time. With reasonable fund minimums, you do not need tremendous wealth to open a donor-advised fund.

A donor-advised fund allows you to make gifts over time and invest your charitable dollars without the burden and expense of establishing and maintaining a private or family foundation.

Its flexibility makes it a convenient option to manage your giving and enjoy hands-on involvement.

RON & MARGARET PECKHAM We live by the motto that you make a living by what you get, but you make a life by what you give. There are two ways we want to give back purposefully: during our life and then again through our estate when we’re gone. The Community Foundation has made it possible for us to do both.

We set up a donor-advised fund at the Community Foundation to make grants to the causes we care about. The process of setting up and utilizing our fund has been seamless. It gives us comfort knowing that our money is being well stewarded.

THE CENTRAL NEW YORK COMMUNITY FOUNDATION YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY FOUNDATION WAS BUILT TO LAST. Since our establishment in 1927, thousands of individuals, families and organizations have put their faith in our ability to facilitate their charitable giving. As a trusted steward of charitable dreams and legacies, we strive every day to honor and preserve the memories of our community’s caretakers. Flexible gifts from thousands of donors have built a pool of charitable capital that allows us to proactively address changing needs and support innovative responses.

Our mission is to foster a thriving Central New York community, inspire greater giving, celebrate legacy and steward charitable resources for today and tomorrow.

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME. When you give through the Community Foundation, you ensure that your gift stays in Central New York. Unlike private foundations, we aggregate many funds, magnifying their impact while providing maximum tax advantages and lessening administrative burdens. Further, your gift supports and sustains our local community. The fees we charge are recycled into grants that support local nonprofits and move our community forward.

WHAT IS A DONOR-ADVISED FUND?

DONOR-ADVISED FUNDS ARE OUR MOST POPULAR LIFETIME GIVING OPTION BECAUSE THEY ALLOW YOU TO BE ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN THE GRANTMAKING PROCESS. The Community Foundation gives you the right to advise on distributions from your fund to specific charities that meet IRS guidelines. Staff members with significant expertise on local issues and organizations are also available to identify organizations that match your charitable interests. Additional gifts may be made to your donor-advised fund at any time.

You can use cash, stock, real estate or other assets to qualify for an immediate tax deduction.

JACK & LINDA WEBB We chose to contribute appreciated stock to seed our donor-advised fund. The expertise available at the Community Foundation made establishing our fund convenient. Making grants from our fund is simplified by providing us the ability to allocate grants electronically.

Currently, our fund is supporting a variety of arts, healthcare and human service organizations. Teaming up with the Community Foundation is making it possible for us to feel that in a small way our contribution helps the Central New York community.

KIM & PATRICK MURPHY Two elder generations of our family have long partnered with the Community Foundation to facilitate their giving. Therefore, choosing a similar path was a natural fit. Some may find the word foundation or the concept of opening a fund intimidating, but it is actually a very affordable and easy tool that can simplify your giving.

Our donor-advised fund allows us to get started on our charitable goals at an early stage by contributing to it over the years when the time is right for us. The fund is easy to manage and making gifts to the organizations we care about is hassle-free.

AN ALTERNATIVE TO A PRIVATE FOUNDATION IT’S EFFICIENT. We handle the managerial tasks of your fund all for a nominal administrative fee. Hundreds of funds share the costs of administration, allowing for economies of scale.

IT’S PERSONAL. Not only may you recommend distributions from your fund to specific charities, you may also designate a successor advisor to it, which is an effective way to engage other family members in charitable activity.

IT’S EASY. The necessary paperwork to establish a new fund is straightforward and can be completed in minutes. Recommending grants can be done online. We take care of the paperwork for you.

IT’S UP TO YOU to determine the appropriate level of spending from your donor-advised fund, with none of the burdensome compliance requirements of private foundations. If you are interested in preserving your fund for the long term, you have the option to adopt our suggested spending rate.
