DeSantis Announces Special Session on Property Insurance Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said he will call a special session of the legislature to address rising property insurance rates in the state.

The Republican governor said the special legislative session will occur in May and focus mainly on the “reform of the property insurance market” but could address other topics. He said he would sign a proclamation this week containing meeting dates and additional details.

DeSantis said the goal on property insurance would be to “bring some sanity and stabilize and have a functioning market.”

Koffee Represents Jamaica And Reggae At First Coachella Jamaican Reggae Singer Koffee represented the island while making her first appearance at the Coachella Music Festival on April 16th.

Coachella is one of the biggest music festivals in the United States, pulling some 250,000 people over its two-weekends.

The Grammy-award winning reggae singer opened the festival on Day 2. Koffee was also the only Jamaican artiste billed for this year's staging.

Dressed in cap, shorts, a white top, and matching white sneakers, the 22-year-old began her set with the hit single Rapture. She was backed by dancers and backup singers who flew from Jamaica to California.

During her set, Koffee paused, asking the massive crowd, “how many of you here actually know who I am?” - to which she received a unanimous cheer. She also thanked the audience for supporting her and apologized for being late. “Thank you so much for coming out. I'm so sorry for being late; thank you for your patience,” she said.

Koffee is among an elite list of Jamaicans that have performed at Coachella. Past reggae performers include Skip Marley (2018), Chronixx and Protoje (2016), Lee 'Scratch' Perry (2013) and Damian 'Jr. Gong' Marley (2007, 2011 and

2014).

Her inclusion on the Coachella lineup comes as no surprise to reggae fans who have watched her incredible, fast-paced rise to fame over the last four years. The 22-yearold Spanish Town-native, born Mikayla Simpson, skyrocketed to international fame following the late 2018 release of her single “Toast”, which garnered millions of spins and fans including Usain Bolt and Barack Obama.

In 2019, “Toast” was featured on former US President, Barack Obama's summer and 2019 year-end playlists, on a celebrityapproved playlist curated by Oprah Magazine, and on billionaire rapper, Jay-Z's favorite songs of the year playlist. The song has resonated with thousands of fans around the world, pushing Koffee to the forefront of reggae revival music.

“Toast” was the lead single off her debut EP Rapture, released in 2019. The EP was nominated for a Reggae Grammy the following year, making Koffee the youngest artist ever nominated in the category. The EP also debuted at number one on the Billboard Reggae Album Chart, making her the youngest artist ever to achieve a number one album on the reggae chart.

In 2020, Rapture won a Grammy Award at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, making Koffee the youngest person (at 19 years old) and only woman to be awarded in the Best Reggae Album category.

That same year, Koffee was named by Elle Magazine as one of "10 Trailblazing Women Changing The Future You Need To Know". She was also featured on John Legend's album and tapped by Jay-Z to perform the theme song for the film, The Harder They Fall.

Following her debut EP, Koffee also released several singles including “Lockdown”. With the release of the official video for “Lockdown”, Koffee became the first reggae artist to receive over 1 million views on YouTube in 48 hours.

Her debut album, Gifted, was released in March 2022 to positive reviews. The project debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart and is currently at No. 3.

Koffee, who has also supported International rock artiste Harry Styles and Grammy-award winning R&B artist, Daniel Caesar on tour, is also embarking on her tour this year, aptly titled “Gifted”.

PM Rowley to Meet With High Level US Officials in Barbados

Barbados extends COVID-19 state of emergency The Barbados Parliament on Tuesday gave the green light to a further extension of the state of emergency (SOE) as the island deals with a new wave of cases linked to the COVID-19.

Health Minister Ian Gooding-Edghill, who piloted the Resolution on the Emergency Management Act, said that the SOE would remain in effect until September 22.

Gooding-Edghill said the move is necessary due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 and the evolving variant, appealing to Barbadians to follow the necessary hygiene measures and mask wearing along with getting vaccinated or the booster shots.

Antigua PM Gaston Brown to Receive UWI American Foundation Award Antigua's Prime Minister Gaston Browne will on Thursday receive the American Foundation for the University of the West Indies (AFUWI) prestigious Legacy Award for his leadership, which facilitates nationbuilding, strengthening regional alliances, and creating a legacy that future generations can build on.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Sir Hilary Beckles, in a letter to Prime Minister Browne said “AFUWI is proud of Prime Minister Browne's stellar accomplishments as Prime Minister and Minister for Finance and Corporate Governance.

“Your passion and commitment to improving the lives of the people of your country are evidenced by the many initiatives

you and your administration have implemented to address matters germane to nationbuilding,” Sir Hilary said.

He said these include increasing the housing stock, reducing unemployment, improving health care via the upgrade of plant and equipment, increasing the number of medical practitioners, infrastructure upgrades of airports and seaports, funding for venture capital and entrepreneurial endeavors, and increasing investment in building a robust and competitive tourism industry.

“Part of your abiding legacy will be the ability of the people of Antigua and Barbuda to

The 49th Carifta Games was Memorable and Exciting The 49th Carifta Games is now over, and there is consensus that it was a memorable show.

After two years of absence, the region's premier track and field event for junior athletes returned with a bang. Kudos to Jamaica for hosting a fabulous show after two other countries decided not to take up the challenge.

Jamaica dominated the event for the 36th straight year with 97 medals, including 47 gold, 32 silvers, and 18 bronze. Trinidad was second with 23 medals; two gold, ten silvers, and 11 bronze.

They were relegated to fourth however, because of the quality of their medals. The Bahamas got the third-highest number of medals with 17, and Barbados was fourth with 11.

The British Virgin Island (BVI) was third based on the quality of medals, winning four golds, two silvers, and one bronze. This is the best performance by BVI, thanks to their superstar athlete Adaejah Hodge who won the Austin Sealy Award for being the most outstanding athlete.

This was the 45th time Jamaica has won the event since 1972. The other winners are Bermuda in 1975 and Bahamas in 1980, 1981, 1983, and 1984.

While Jamaica's dominance was expected, a significant feature of this year's event was the performance of the smaller islands. Twenty-two of the 26 countries won medals, with 13 winning at least one gold. In 2019 only 12 countries won gold.

Adaejah Hodge's performance was memorable. She won the 100m in 11.29 seconds, the long jump with a leap 6.20 meters, and then denied two Jamaicans of the gold in the 200 meters, with a

The event also produced some fantastic records. Keyshawn Strachan of the Bahamas won gold in the javelin with a new games record of 79.89m. Dior-Rae Scott of The Bahamas set a new Carifta record in the Girls' Under-17 Javelin with her throw of 44.57 meters. Jamaicans Dionjah Shaw threw 45.32m to win the Under-17 girls' discus, Kobe Lawrence established a shot-put record of 20.02 meters, and Jaydon Hibbert leapt 16.46 meters to set a games record in the triple jump. Jamaica's under-20 men's team was also in record mode. The team of Bouwahjgie Nkrumie, Bryan Levell, DeAndre Daley, and Sandrey Davison won the 4x100m relay title in a new CARIFTA Games record of 39.15 seconds.

But of all the performances, the most significant came in the under-20 women's 4x100m event. The four ladies, Serena Cole, Brianna Lyston, and sisters Tina and Tia Clayton, blew the covers off the previous mark with a scintillating 42.58 seconds. The old mark was 42.94.

Apart from the performances, the vibe at the national stadium in Kingston was an exciting Caribbean affair. Credit must be given to the supporters from all the countries but specifically the Bahamians. The Bahamas party came with a full marching band and costumes. They provided continuous music and entertainment throughout the three days and kept the crowd lively and on their feet.

Now that the 49th edition of the Carifta games is in the history books, we hope that the athletes, especially the senior ones, will see benefits beyond competing and winning. We know that scouts were on hand and trust that tangible opportunities will be on the table. Decisions will be made about education, sponsorship, and careers. May good sense and well-thought-out plans prevail now, as we look forward to the special 50th anniversary of the Carifta games in The Bahamas next year.

Dozens Injured in Massive Accident Prime Minister Henry Expresses Condolences Prime Minister Dr. Ariel Henry says he is “deeply saddened” at the loss of lives following a vehicular accident over the weekend that left at least six people dead and more than 70 others injured.

Media reports said that the accident occurred on Saturday when a truck returning from Breman, south of the capital, Port au Prince and carrying musicians and fans of the Rara “inonsan” overturned in Jacmel near Meyer.

Rara is a form of festival music that originated in Haiti that is used for street processions, typically during Easter Week. The music centers on a set of cylindrical bamboo trumpets called Vaksin, but also features drums, maracas, güiras or güiros, a

percussion instrument, and metal bells, as well as alsos which are made from recycled metal, often coffee cans.

According to the Secretary General of the South-East delegation, the speeding driver would have tried to avoid a band of Rara on the road and lost control of his vehicle.

“I am deeply saddened after learning the news of the accident, in Meyer, commune of Jacmel, which caused several victims, including deaths and injuries. I offer my condolences to the families of the victims of this new tragedy, while renewing them my full support,” Henry said in a message on his social media page.

The authorities said four people died at the scene of the accident and two others at hospital, while 72 people including 20 who were seriously injured have been taken to the SaintMichel hospital in Jacmel. Medical officials said most of those injured suffered multiple fractures.

IFAD signs financing agreement with Haiti Talks Haiti has signed a financing agreement with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) regarding the execution of its Inclusive Blue Economy (I-BE) project that will help preserve the Three Bays Protected Area by providing economic opportunities for smallholder farmers and artisanal fishers living in the northeast of the country.

The US$26.6 million project, which will be executed by the Ministry of Economy and Finance, is expected to benefit an estimated benefit 40,000 people who live in the five municipalities of the protected area with particular attention being paid to women and young people.

IFAD is providing US$14 million towards the project that will strengthen the capacities of the National Agency for Protected Areas of Haiti (ANAP) and facilitate the adaptation of national legislation in favour of artisanal fishing and its sustainability.

Silveri, said the region's “poverty and malnutrition rates and poor fishing and agricultural practices, such as the use of fine-mesh seines, the anarchic slaughter of trees for charcoal production, slash-and-burn agriculture and the lack of soil preservation techniques, are depleting marine and terrestrial resources, threatening their sustainability and posing worrying risks to the country's food security in the medium term.

“The project will help regulate these practices, thereby reducing pressure on natural resources, and diversify food production by encouraging good practices in small-scale animal husbandry, vegetable growing, honey and salt, and the management of mangrove forests. It will promote a more sustainable use of wood as a fuel for cooking by offering training in charcoal production techniques and the improvement of domestic ovens.”

He said by refining fishing and salt production techniques, the project will create

synergies that will improve fish processing and marketing.

“Thus, it will be possible to sell properly salted, dried and smoked fish not only in the zone, but also in other regions of the country. At the same time, by improving small-scale livestock farming techniques and vegetable production, beneficiary families will improve their diets and earn additional income.

“The best way to help Haiti's small-scale farmers and artisanal fishers progress and contribute to the country's food security is to provide them with the means to carry out their economic activities in a sustainable way, in a way that does not force them to deplete resources. to survive,” said Silveri.

IFAD said that since it began its work in Haiti nearly 45 years ago, it has invested in 11 projects representing a total amount of approximately US$290 million, which have benefited more than 100,000 rural families.

British Jamaican Alfred Samuels Awarded for Cancer Documentary British Jamaican Alfred Samuels has won the Outstanding Achievement Award at the World Film Carnival in Singapore for his work as executive producer of A Survivor Amongst Survivors. Diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer in 2012, he turned his energies toward inspiring, motivating, and educating people about the disease. He authored the books “Invincibility in the Face of Prostate Cancer: Coming Out the Other Side” and “Motivated to Inspire,” and now his documentary has become his latest inspiration about preventing and fighting the deadly illness.

Samuels began a difficult journey to fight his prostate cancer after he was given only six months to live. When asked to participate in a Stampede drug trial a clinical trial funded by the Cancer Research UK organization Samuels agreed citing he had nothing to lose. The trial consisted of the drug Abiraterone combined with standard hormone therapy. His condition worsened before it got better, and Samuels had days when he thought he would not survive. His mother had already died of breast cancer; within six months of the start of his treatment, Samuels’ sister died of cancer, and five years later, his brother died of prostate cancer.

Amazingly, as years passed, Samuels began to win his battle against cancer. He continued to progress, and his consultant could not understand how he survived the disease that decimated his family. Not only did he survive but he continued to improve year after year. However, he knew that he was changing “mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.” He noted the importance of accepting the reality of his situation, and he learned that the more he feared the disease, the more he paid attention to defeating it. And he

learned to transform despair into hope.

He has come through his experience with a message for men who hesitate to receive prostate cancer screening. He wants them to know that the disease is curable if it is caught early. He also emphasizes that men owe it to their families to be screened.

By 2035, estimates place the number of people in the UK who will contract cancer will total 500,000 a year. This has serious implications for the National Health Service, Samuels said, which must ensure that there is a specialist cancer nursing staff to address the increase in the number of diagnosed individuals.

Alfred Samuels was born into a Jamaican family in the United Kingdom.

He earned a master’s degree in security management before pursuing his writing and filmmaking career. In 2019 he was named the Ambassador of the Year at the awards ceremony of Cancer Research UK Flame of Hope. The awards recognize the exceptional achievements Samuels of volunteers in the UK Alfred has also worked in the entertainment industry for the past 28 years, for stars such as Bob Dylan, Sade, Seal and Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, Mariah Carey, Oasis, and Rod Stewart, to name a few.

Lauderhill Kicks Off Inclusive Entrepreneurship Program (LIEP) for Returning Residents The City of Lauderhill has officially launched its Lauderhill Inclusive Entrepreneurship Program (LIEP), which aims to bring informal entrepreneurs into the formal economy and provide them with the resources that they need to grow their business.

Lauderhill is 1 of 6 cities across the United States that was selected to participate in the National League of Cities – Cities Inclusive Entrepreneurship Initiative under the Informal Entrepreneurship category.

LIEP is specifically intended to supply resources to men and women who live in Lauderhill and were previously incarcerated.

The program will provide business education, process navigation tips, access to capital, coaching, mentorship, and recognition for those who are currently operating a business informally. It is a spinoff of the popular Lauderhill Shines Program, now in its fourth cohort.

The city's Vice Mayor Melissa Dunn explains, “my colleagues and I are committed to fostering an entrepreneurial ecosystem that will keep the City's economy robust and thriving. LIEP will assist those who have been previously incarcerated turn their side hustle or dream business into a reality here in Lauderhill. We want to provide them with all the tools necessary to run legitimate businesses that contribute to our economy, provide jobs, and develop successful CEOs.” The 10-week pilot program will start its first cohort with 10 registrants in May and run through July. Abrahams told Parliament that prior to the amendment, the offence was one for which an individual could be arrested and charged a sum of as much as BDS$50,000. But he said having a conviction means an individual has a criminal record and paying the fine means that's the end of the matter.

“A lot of people believe that last week the government instituted a fine of BDS$100 for not wearing a mask. This is not an upscale, it is a serious tone down of what obtained prior to last week,” he told legislators.

For roofs, she said, if insurance companies are not going to have to fully cover older roofs, they should be required to tell consumers how much they are covering and how much that will decrease the premium.

She said the only reason the number of lawsuits in Florida is high is that insurance

companies often try to stiff their customers out of tens of thousands of dollars. She said in one recent case she handled involving a home destroyed in Hurricane Irma, the property insurer tried to pay about $2,000, saying the damage was caused by flooding that its policy didn’t cover. She said arbitrators disagreed and ordered the company to pay $233,000.

“No one is suing over a couple thousand dollars,” Boggs said.

Hamstring Puts Roach on Sidelines with Bangladesh Series on Horizon Ace West Indies seamer Kemar Roach will play no further part in the English County Championship for Surrey, after picking up a hamstring injury last week against Hampshire.

Surrey said Tuesday the 33-year-old had returned to his native Barbados to recuperate after scans confirmed the injury, sustained on day two against Hampshire at the Oval.

Roach sent down 38 balls in Hampshire's first innings and took no further part in the contest which Surrey eventually won by an innings and 17 runs.

“I'm gutted that my time at Surrey has come to an end due to a slight injury but I want to thank the whole Surrey family for the love and care they have shown,” Roach said on social media.

The Barbadian was expected to feature for Surrey in their first five Championship matches of the season, after returning for a second straight campaign following his success for the London club last year.

He turned out in the season-opener against Warwickshire at Edgbaston, bowling excellently in the first innings to pick up three wickets in the drawn game.

Against Hampshire, he had managed only one wicket before limping off.

Morias gave Dagenham a 27th-minute lead when he linked up with Mauro Vilhete and lifted the ball over goalkeeper Ethan Ross.

It was 26-year-old striker Morias' 12th goal of the season following his hat-trick on Friday in a 7-3 win over Barnet.

St. Lucia to Host CPL 2022 Matches The Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) has confirmed that St. Lucia will host matches during the 2022 season at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in Beausejour.

No dates have been announced, however.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the CPL named St. Lucia as the third of four countries where matches will be played. The others announced so far are Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana.

“We are very pleased to confirm that we will be back in Saint Lucia in 2022 and we are grateful to the government for working with us to make this happen. St. Lucia has been such a huge part of the Hero CPL story and as we enter our 10th season it is great to be back at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground this year,” said Pete Russell, Hero CPL's CEO. With the COVID-19 pandemic resulting in the tournament having to be played in one country, the 2020 and 2021 seasons of the Hero CPL took place in Trinidad and Tobago and St Kitts and Nevis respectively.

For the 2022 season, which will run from August 30 to September 30, the plan is to move around the region once again with three venues being used for the group stages and another selected for the finals.

“We are delighted to be one of the venues for CPL this year. The pandemic limited major sporting events across the world so to be able to welcome back a prestigious tournament such as this means a lot to us,” said CEO of the St. Lucia Tourism Authority Lorine Charles-St. Jules.

“This event is full of opportunities. It's a chance to enjoy the brilliant sportsmanship that you see on the cricket field and it's an opportunity to come together and enjoy our St. Lucian hospitality. We look forward to welcoming spectators and visitors this September.”
