Haiti President Jovenel Moïse Killed at Home

Haitian President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated in an attack on his private residence, the country's interim prime minister said in a statement Wednesday, calling it a “hateful, inhumane and barbaric act.”

First Lady Martine Moïse was hospitalized following the overnight attack, interim Premier Claude Joseph said. The nation of more than 11 million people had grown increasingly unstable and disgruntled under Moïse.

“The country's security situation is under the control of the National Police of Haiti and the Armed Forces of Haiti,” Joseph said in a statement from his office.

“Democracy and the republic will win.”

In the early morning hours of Wednesday, the streets were largely empty in the Caribbean nation's capital of Port-au-Prince, but some people ransacked businesses in one area.

Joseph said police have been deployed to the National Palace and the upscale community of Pétionville and will be sent to other areas.

President Joe Biden celebrated new U.S. citizens, including Jamaican-born, historymaking nurse Sandra Lindsay, at an event at the White House on July 2nd.

The event was part of a federal effort to swear in almost 10,000 immigrants as United States citizens. During the event, President Biden was joined by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, a native of Cuba, who said that it was important for the Biden administration to recognize the contributions of immigrants to the United States.

During his speech, President Biden referred to U.S. immigrants as brave and said that their dreams helped to build the country.

Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister is New CARICOM Chairman Prime Minister of Antigua & Barbuda Gaston Browne on Thursday, July 1 assumed the chairmanship of CARICOM. Browne, who will serve for the next six months, succeeds the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr Keith Rowley.

The new CARICOM chairman is expected to tackle certain issues during his tenure, these include the reduction of intra-regional air travel taxes, the potential for a regional medicinal cannabis market and the sustained threat to regional development concerning de-risking.

In a statement from the Guyana-based Secretariat of the regional body, Browne, who holds responsibility for Services in CARICOM's Quasi Cabinet, will chair the virtual 42nd meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government which began on Monday, July 5.

Browne was born on 9 February 1967, in Villa/Point Area on the twin island of Antigua and Barbuda. As a child, he lived in Gray's Farm with his paternal great-grandmother, who was in her eighties, at the time,

After completing his secondary education, Gaston attended the City Banking College in the United Kingdom, where he graduated with a BSc in banking and finance. Later, he attended University of Manchester, acquiring an MBA in Finance.

secured a position with the Swiss American Banking Group, a major banking consortium in Antigua and Barbuda, eventually rising to the position of Commercial Banking Manager.

He entered the political arena in 1999, when he was elected to parliament for the constituency of St. John's City West. He was appointed Minister of Planning, Trade, Industry, Commerce and Public Service Affairs in his first term as an MP. Gaston Browne led the Antigua Labour Party to victory in the 2014 general election, after 10 years in opposition, winning 14 out of 17 seats. Browne was sworn in as Prime Minister on 13 June 2014. He defeated Baldwin Spencer's United Progressive Party, which had ruled for 10 years.

In September 2017, Hurricane Irma swept through Barbuda.

Gaston Browne stated that the Category 5 storm had destroyed 95% of the structures and vehicles.

Initial estimates showed that at least 60% of the island's residents were homeless because of the disaster. All communications with Barbuda were completely down for a time; most of the communications system had been destroyed. The government had almost completed the evacuation of the entire island of Barbuda; nearly 1,800 people were transferred to Antigua.

Browne's government was facing a massive challenge. An estimate published by Time indicated that over $100 million would be required to rebuild homes and infrastructure. Philmore Mullin, Director of Antigua and Barbuda's National Office of Disaster Services, said that "all critical infrastructure and utilities are non-existent – food supply, medicine, shelter, electricity, water, communications, waste management". He summarised the situation as follows: "Public utilities need to be rebuilt in their entirety ...

It is optimistic to think anything can be rebuilt in six months ... In my 25 years in disaster management, I have never seen something like this."

Browne is married to Maria Bird-Browne, niece of the second Prime Minister Lester Bird. The couple have a son, Prince Gaston Browne, who was Browne's fourth child, as he had three children prior to marriage. They had a second child, a daughter, in September 2020.

In December 2020, it was announced that Maria would stand as a candidate for Antigua Labour Party in the St. John's Rural East constituency. She won the seat in the March 2018 election.

CARICOM Countries to Get Nearly Two Million Vaccine Doses This Summer The outgoing chairman of CARICOM, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Keith Rowley, said Saturday, said that the 15-member regional integration grouping will receive at least 800,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines from the African Union later this month.

In addition, Rowley, who hands over the chairmanship of CARICOM to his Antigua and Barbuda counterpart, Gaston Browne on Monday, said that the region will also receive 400,000 doses in August and a further half a million in September.

He said the vaccinations, coupled with existing supplies from other sources, will help the region move towards herd immunity by the end of the year.

“Virtually all of my chairman's effort in

CARICOM was on vaccines for the nations of CARICOM and during this month of July, we are expecting an improvement in the forecast we had made, because initially, I had told you the vaccines we were going to get from the African purchase would have been coming here towards the end of August.

produces, CARICOM will get a portion of it,” Rowley said.

St. Lucians Vote for a New Gov’t on July 26

Dominica's First Prime Minister, Patrick Roland John dies Dominica's first prime minister, Patrick Roland John, died Tuesday, the state-owned DBS Radio has reported.

He was 83 years old.

The cause of death was not disclosed, but John, the island's last premier, had in recent years been suffering from diabetes and had one of his legs amputated in 2016. He died at the Dominica-China Friendship Hospital where he had been taken to on Monday night.

John, led Dominica to independence from the United Kingdom on November, 3 1978 and was leader of the Waterfront and Allied Workers' Union (WAWU) and mayor of Roseau before being elected to the legislature in 1970.

He entered Parliament as a member of E.O. LeBlanc's ruling Dominica Labour Party (DLP), holding several ministerial posts and when LeBlanc

St. Lucians will vote for a new government on July 26, after Prime Minister Allen Chastanet on Monday night ended months of speculation as to when he would seek a new mandate from the population.

Chastanet said Nomination Day will be on July 16. He said he had taken three matters into consideration before announcing the date, including ensuring the safety of St. Lucians during the campaign and voting, as well as allowing for schools, used as voting centers, to be closed.

He said there had been agreement among the two major political parties to adhere to the protocols and policies regarding the efforts to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

“We are at the crossroads. This is not an ordinary election, this is an election for the ages,” he said.

resigned in 1974, John succeeded him as prime minister.

But on May 29, 1979, in the face of widespread protests to his austere leadership, soldiers fired on demonstrating crowds. In the ensuing melee, a young man was shot dead and several persons were injured. Resistance to his rule strengthened as public servants went on strike and the country was completely shut down. He was eventually forced to resign in June 1979 after several of his cabinet ministers deserted the party.

Prior to his removal from office, John was given the position of Colonel in the now defunct Dominica Defence Force (DDF) and he will be remembered mostly for the 12-year-jail sentence that has been imposed on him in 1985 on a charge of conspiracy to overthrow the government in a 1981 plot with United

States mercenaries.

After several appeals from various persons to Prime Minister Dame Eugenia Charles for leniency, John was released on May, 29 1990.

After his release, John resumed a role in public life particularly in sports, becoming President of the Dominica Football Association (DFA). In 2007 he was inducted into the CONCACAF Hall of Fame. The DFA administrative headquarters is named “Patrick John Football House” in his honour.

In November 2011, John was banned by FIFA from the sport for two years for his part in an alleged bribery scheme involving FIFA presidential candidate Mohamed bin Hammam.

John is survived by his wife, Desiree, who was admitted to a hospital on Monday with a broken ankle.

What Was Your Reaction to Sha’Carri Richardson Being Suspended from the Olympics for Using Marijuana?

American track sensation Sha’Carri Richardson will miss the Tokyo Olympics entirely after being left off the country’s relay team. This comes just days after it was announced that she had failed a drug test, which ultimately cost her her spot in the women’s 100 meters. Richardson was dubbed as a top challenger to Jamaicans Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, the fastest woman alive, and Elaine Thompson-Herah. She said the stress of her biological mother’s recent death led her to use marijuana, a banned substance.

Richardson’s situation has sparked a debate among fans, fellow athletes and a number of celebrities, who’ve argued against her suspension. Supporters have even started a petition in her favor. We asked some South Florida residents what was their reaction to her suspension. . Here are the responses:

Roshel Bailey: It really is an unfortunate situation. I can understand and empathize with her grieving her mother cause that’s tough. But also, the rules are the rules. She broke the rules so she has to just accept the consequences and move on. It’s dumb for people to be starting petitions and talking about boycotting the Olympics. Sha’Carri is young. If she stays focused, I’m sure she’ll be at the next one.

Zoey Ricketts: It feels like Americans don’t really understand the Olympics or the rules of the doping agencies. Although you can smoke marijuana in America, the Olympics is a global stage, and if you want to participate, you have to obey the rules. I feel bad for what she’s going through but rules are rules.

Carlos Doughty: We live in a country where we can go ahead and smoke marijuana and go anywhere and do anything, but for some reason, she can’t smoke a joint and run the race? Those things just don’t like up together. I don’t see how or why one should influence the other. It’s bull.

Alaine Filius: I agree that you can’t tell a person how to mourn, but I also understand rules and regulations.

If they don’t want you to do certain things, then don’t do them.

Sasha Sainvilus: Being a former track runner, I understand both sides but at the end of the day, the rules are the rules. Everywhere you go throughout life, you’re gonna have to follow the rules and there are consequences if you don’t.

Rhael Sayers: I think Sha’Carri’s situation is an unfortunate turn of events. Being a student athlete myself, I would be very distraught if the sport and goal I dedicated my whole life to was taken away. She didn’t make the rules but she’s playing the rules and has to follow them. Although she was suspended, I think she did the right thing but putting her mental health first.

In sports, for many athletes, mental health is usually overlooked and in the future, it needs to be prioritized.

Caribbean Nations and their Diaspora Cannot Afford a Bad Hurricane Season With the economic fallout from the pandemic still affecting countries, Caribbean nations and their diaspora cannot afford a bad hurricane season. Apart from the impact on infrastructure and access to lifesustaining necessities in the affected islands, disasters do put stress on the diaspora which becomes the corner stone for support, especially financial.

The hurricane season in the Caribbean will last until November 30th and the region is gearing up for yet another active Atlantic hurricane season, compounded by the continuing challenges and constraints of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecast, a 60 per cent chance of an above-normal season is expected this year, with a likely range of 13 to 20 named storms (winds of 63 kmh / 39 mph or higher), of which 6 to 10 could become hurricanes (winds of 119 kmh / 74 mph or higher), including 3 to 5 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 179 kmh / 111 mph or higher).

Many parts of the region are still recovering from that record-breaking 2020 Atlantic hurricane season which came on the heels of bad 2019 and, in particular, 2017 season.

Caribbean governments and their people are still trying to deal with the economic ravages of the covid-19 pandemic, and any more expenses would hurt worse. A bad hurricane or two could cause massive damages and major disruption to families and livelihoods especially at this time.

Jamaica already estimates that damages from Elsa, the first hurricane, would run about Ja$800 million and we are yet to hear the stories of Barbados, Haiti, Dominican Republic and the other islands that were affected.

In 2020 $103 billion dollars went into the economies of Latin America and the Caribbean from remittance. This is an estimated increase of 6.5 percent according to the world bank. The Domican Republic, Haiti and Jamaica received the bulk of the Caribbean recipients taking in US$8.3, US$3.1 and US$3 billion respectively. Most of this financial support came from the USA. Think of how many other ways some of this money could have been invested if it didn't end up somewhere to provide support.

While we cannot prevent the hurricanes from coming, on a personal level we do have some control over the destruction it causes and the effects on lives. We therefore encourage all members of the diaspora to constantly remind families and friends back home of the best hurricane practices to minimize damage and destruction. These include getting emergency supplies, making a disaster plan, ensuring that homes are secured and safe, ensuring that dangerous obstacles are removed from yards or secured, ensuring their communities are prepared and pay attention to warnings and forecast.

With better preparation it is more likely to have less damage on properties, less loss of lives and less need for support.

Local Leaders React To Assasination Of Hatian President Jovenel Moise As the roughly 11 million people in Haiti and others in the diaspora try to understand and deal with the assassination of their president, Jovenel Moise, some leaders are looking at ways to help the Caribbean nation while expressing outrage at the senseless act.

The killing which took place on Wednesday morning has also sent the first lady of Haiti Martine Moise to the hospital with injuries. She is now in a Miami hospital in a critical condition. It is reported that the killers went to the president’s home claiming to be agents and carried out the gruesome killing.

US representative Val Deming who cochairs the House Haiti Caucus said in a statement that “The assassination of Haitian President Moïse was a horrific act and stands as a clarion call for swift and decisive action to bring political stability and peace to a nation in crisis.”

She is also calling for “full transparency and an independent investigation.”

Representative Deming further stated that the caucus remain committed to working with the Biden Administration in support of equitable, inclusive Haitian-led democracy that “reestablishes rule of law, reinforces institutions of Haitian-led governance, and centers the safety and human rights of every Haitian citizen.”

Speaking exclusively to Caribbean Nation Weekly, Holness who is seeking to take the congressional seat of the late Alcee Hastings said it was “strange” that Jovenel’s security force allowed the assassination to happen.

“There should have been a serious battle at least, if that was going to happen.” He said “It’s really a sad day for the Haitian people no matter whether you like President Jovenel Moïse. This is not the way for someone to be removed from office,” In outlining his three-step plan to help Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, Mr. Holness said that the three areas that need attention for stability are security, free transparent elections and help from the rest of the world.

“The big crisis of Haiti today is the crisis of security,” he said. “There are many Haitians who are here who would like to go back and visit their family but are afraid because of the

kidnappings and the murders.”

He suggested that the United States, CARICOM, The Organization of American States (OAS), and the UN need to be called in by those in charge of the island and “asked for security help now.”

Regarding the issue of elections, Mr. Holness said that the political leadership in Haiti needs to be unified now and advised that a joint government should be formed from an election process that is “fair, open and transparent.” This he said will give Haitians confidence in who their government is.

The final step from the future congressman would have the world coming together to help Haiti, with leadership from America.

The United States, he said should lead this step, “firstly because it is in our best interest as a country” and “Haiti has contributed in a very positive way to our nation over many many years.”

At the same time the House candidate suggests that America has neglected not only Haiti but the whole region. He said evidence can be found in the presence and leadership of America in Latin America and the Caribbean in comparison to Europe.

And as the people of Haiti mourn their loss, Mr. Holness want them to unite. He is asking the people in the diaspora to continue supporting their families, civic and social institutions back home because these are the things that hold Haiti together today.

Meanwhile, Executive Director of the Haitian organization, Family Action Network Movement (FANM), Marleine Bastien, has expressed shock and is sadden by the murder.

Speaking to CNW she said that there is a lot of fear, outrage and concerns now in Haiti because there is no president, no constitutional government, an illegitimate prime minister, a divided opposition, and a rise in crime and violence. “There is a constitutional crisis in Haiti,” she suggested, and is hoping that everybody on the island including leaders and civil society will unite and speak with one voice because the Haitian people have been crying for change for a long time.

She stated however that even though people wanted President Moise to go, “no one deserves to be assassinated in their own home.”

The FANM founder is asking Haitians living on the island to remain calm and not to continue to put themselves in situations where they are victimized but find ways to unite to bring security and stability to the island. She also wants her people to find ways to organize to bring national elections that are “free, fair, credible and most importantly, democratic.”

Crews Give up Hope of Finding Survivors at Collapse Site

SURFSIDE, Fla. (AP) — Emergency workers gave up Wednesday on any hope of finding survivors in the collapsed Florida condo building, telling sobbing families that there was “no chance of life” in the rubble as crews shifted their efforts to recovering more

remains.

The announcement followed increasingly somber reports from emergency officials, who said they sought to prepare families for the worst.

“At this point, we have truly exhausted every option available to

us in the search-and-rescue mission,” Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said at a news conference.

“We have all asked God for a miracle, so the decision to transition from rescue to recovery is an extremely difficult one,” she said.

Eight more bodies were recovered Wednesday, bringing the death toll to 54, the mayor said.

Thirty-three of the dead have been identified, and 86 people are still unaccounted for.

Miami-Dade Assistant Fire Chief Raide Jadallah told families at a private briefing that crews would stop using rescue dogs and listening devices but would continue to search for their loved ones.

“Our sole responsibility at this point is to bring closure,” he said as relatives cried in the background.

Shaggy, LUST, Skinny Fabulous, Deliver Stellar Performance at Jerk Festival belted out hit after hit from his extensive catalogue, including favorites like “Angel”, “It Wasn’t Me”, “Oh Carolina” and “Mr. Boombastic”. He also did renditions of several other dancehall/reggae classics like Peter Tosh’s Buk-InHamm Palace and Beenie Man’s “Who Am I”.

Also putting their spin on Dancehall classics was St Vincent and the Grenadines Soca Skinny Fabulous, who performed his own songs as well as a few from several Jamaican artistes. “I spent four years in Jamaica. I love the culture,” he said while on stage.

In between Skinny Fabulous and Shaggy, was reggae group LUST, which comprises Lukie D, Thriller U, Singing Melody and Tony Curtis, who had the crowd rocking to renditions of reggae classics, a ska medley, gospel, and their usual love songs.

The combination of delicious Caribbean food, a star-studded lineup and the stronger-than-ever-desire of South Florida residents to go outdoors resulted in over 10,000 attendees for this year’s staging.

“Bringing LUST, Skinny Fabulous and Shaggy onboard this year, we knew we had something special. But the attendance exceeded any expectations we had,” said Damian Tater, CEO of Florida Jerk Festival.

“There were Jamaicans who came from as far as Atlanta for the festival. The support from the diaspora was incredible and we’re really grateful,” he added.

Also showing their support at the event was Jamaican-born Broward County Commissioner Dale Holness and Jamaica’s Consul General for the Southern United States, Oliver Mair, who gave his rendition of the Michigan and Smiley's hit, Nice Up The Dance.

The finalists for the 2021 Jamaica Festival Song Competition have been named and include dancehall-reggae artistes Stacious and I-Octane and legendary reggae and soca band, Fab 5.

The selection panel, led by Chief Judge Donovan Germain, has selected 12 finalists, instead of the customary 10, for the professional competition which is celebrating its 55th anniversary this year.

The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange, said “the 12 finalists represent a wide crosssection of genres that will appeal to a wide audience. We want the winning song to be on the lips of every man, woman and child this Independence and beyond.”

Minister Grange said she was “very pleased that so many outstanding performers, writers and producers have entered the Jamaica Festival Song Competition this year; and that three women were among the finalists.” She said the growing interest in the competition was the result of “a deliberate and strategic initiative to revitalise the annual Jamaica Festival”.

Going The Extra Half-Mile Retired Bolt trains for 800m event

Usain Bolt: 800-metre sprinter. That’s right, the now-retired world’s fastest man is not only changing diapers these days but also distances as he makes a brief comeback for a promotional race.

The new father of twins selected the 800 metres, a two-lap endeavour measured in minutes, not seconds, like he’s more accustomed. The training has been gruelling for the 100- and 200metre world record-holder but has made him miss the action.

Sort of.

“When I go to the track and start training, then I don’t miss it that much,” cracked the 34-year-old Bolt, whose nearly 13-year reign as Olympic champion in the 100 and 200 will come to an end at the Tokyo Games. “I’m excited to be training and just running and seeing what I can do.”

Since his retirement in 2017, Bolt’s life has involved making records (he’s a music producer) and raising a family. He and his partner, Kasi Bennett, recently welcomed twins, Saint Leo and Thunder, to their family (they also have a young daughter named Olympia Lightning). He also enjoys a good soccer match (he wants to meet French soccer standout Kylian Mbappé because “he’s fast”) and of course a well-run race — especially a distance event such as the 800.

Bolt’s best time over two trips around the track is two minutes, five seconds, he said. But he quickly added: “I did that in my track shoes. If I put the spikes on, I can make it under two minutes.”

FYI, because he’s all about world records: The top 800 time is 1:40.91 minutes, set by David Rudisha of Kenya at the 2012 London Games.

Bolt is undertaking the new distance in part for a promotion — and to simply put on those spikes again. His opponent won’t be on the track, either. He is going up against a CarMax customer who is getting an instant online offer for a vehicle on their phone as Bolt speeds around his home track. The July 13 “race” will be streamed on his Facebook page.

It may even be punctuated by his signature “Lightning Bolt” pose at the finish.

“I definitely miss it a little bit,” Bolt said of the adrenaline rush from competing.

and just keep on going. He is running lap after lap. “Just to get my legs ready for the lactic acid and my lungs for the air that I need,” he explained.

Bolt believes he can still clock 10.2 seconds in the 100. His coach thinks he might be closer to 10.4.

“I guess one day we’ll test it out,” said Bolt, who set his world records in the 100 (9.58) and 200 (19.19) at the 2009 World Championships.

He insisted his return to a lane, though, isn’t a sign that he’s leaving the door open for a comeback.

“Definitely not,” Bolt emphatically said. “This is just a one-off challenge to see if I still got it.”

In a reversal of the results from the Jamaica Championships in Kingston last month end, Olympics sprint double gold medallist Elaine Thompson-Herah turned in a spectacular performance to beat compatriot Shelly-Ann FraserPryce in the women’s 100m race at the Istvan Gyulai Memorial at the Bregyó Athletic Center in Székesfehérvár, Hungary on Tuesday.

The MVP Track Club star ran 10.71 seconds (0.6 m/s) to win fairly comfortably ahead of Fraser-Pryce in 10.82 seconds, with third place going to Marie-Jose ta Lau of Ivory Coast in 10.86 seconds. Outside of breaking the meet record of 10.99 seconds set by compatriot Veronica Campbell-Brown in 2015, the 10.71secs is just off Thompson-Herah’s personal best of 10.70 seconds and sets her up very well to retain her title in Japan early next month.

Thompson-Herah was also a winner on Saturday in Italy.

It was a good day for Jamaicans as Shericka Jackson produced another sub-22 seconds run to humble Shaunae Miller-Uibo of The Bahamas in the 200m event. The MVP athlete collared Miller-Uibo early in the straight and pulled away for a comfortable win in 21.96 seconds (-0.3m/s), breaking the 22.18 seconds set by Miller-Uibo in 2019. Miller-Uibo clocked 22.15 seconds for second on Tuesday, with Dafne Schippers of tell off the winner, American Grant Halloway in 13.08 seconds.

On-fire Brett Leads Jamaican Scoring Spree (CMC) — In-form striker Nico Brett netted his eighth goal of the United Soccer League season, to be one of four Jamaicans on the scoresheet last weekend as Deshane Beckford, Brian Brown and Rojay Smith all found the target with contrasting results for their respective teams.

Playing on Saturday at the Michael A Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis, the 29-yearold Brett converted from the penalty spot in the eighth minute, a goal that proved to be the decider in a tight contest as Birmingham Legion defeated Indy Eleven 1-0 in the United States midwest.

Karl Ouimette pulled down JJ Williams in the box following a tangle and Brett stepped up to send goalkeeper Robert Edwards the wrong way.

Brett had opportunities to double his

tally, first in the 65th minute when full back Ayoze Garcia was dispossessed 25 yards out and the ball fell to his feet at the edge of the 18-yard box, but Edwards saved from close range at the near post.

And on the stroke of full time, Brett was teed up again on the edge of the box but put his volley just over the crossbar.

The win was Legion’s second straight and fourth in five games, putting them top of the Central Division on 22 points, with Indy Eleven back in fourth on 14 points following their third loss in five games.

Also on Saturday, Brown scored four minutes before half-time but New Mexico United conceded two second-half goals to slump to a 2-1 defeat to El Paso Locomotive at Southwest University Park.

The 28-year-old Brown thought he had

put New Mexico in a strong position to break their two-game losing streak when he drove in a low free kick from 22 yards.

However, Dylan Mares scored twice in the space of two minutes to hand El Paso the lead for good in the 57th minute.

Their third win in five outings lifted El Paso to second on 18 points in the Mountain Division with New Mexico remaining on 14 points in fifth.

In the west, meanwhile, Beckford tucked in his third of the campaign to help Colorado Springs to a 3-1 win over Real Monarchs at Weidner Field on Sunday.

The 23-year-old opened the scoring for the hosts in the 16th minute when he got on the weaker side of his marker inside the box, to squirt Michee Ngalina’s cross from out wide past goalkeeper Jeffrey Dewsnup.

Beckford turned provider for Colorado’s second goal five minutes later, getting in behind the Real defence courtesy of a Jose Torres through-ball to then set up Guinean international Hadji Barry who finished from point blank range.

Aris Briggs pulled one back for the visitors in the 28th but Michael Edwards restored the two-goal cushion four minutes later.

Real squandered the chance to set up a tense finish when Edwards brought down Douglas Martinez in the box in the 86th minute but Noah Powder had his spot kick saved by goalkeeper Sean Melvin.

The win, Colorado’s fourth in five appearances, pushed them to third on 17 points in the Mountain Division with Real Monarch bottom on 10 points following their sixth defeat in 12 matches.
