Miami-Dade Scores Big! After World Cup tourism surge

Miami-Dade County officials and the FIFA World Cup 2026 Miami Host Committee are celebrating what they described as a successful conclusion to the FIFA World Cup, citing smooth operations, strong public transit performance and early signs of a significant economic impact across South Florida

The five-week tournament followed more than two years of planning by local, state and federal partners, with officials saying coordinated efforts in public safety and transportation helped ensure the event ran smoothly

The immortal all-rounder! Cricket mourns the passing of a legend at 89 Sir Garfield Sobers

Cricket has lost one of its brightest lights, and the Caribbean has bid farewell to a figure whose influence stretched far beyond statistics, trophies, or records

Sir Garfield St Aubrun Sobers, the man widely regarded as the greatest all-round cricketer the game has ever known, died Friday at the age of 89, prompting an outpouring of grief and admiration from every corner of the cricketing world From his beloved Barbados to the game's most celebrated venues, tributes flowed for a player whose brilliance transformed the sport and whose character inspired generations

For more than two decades, Sobers embodied cricketing excellence He was equally capable of dismantling bowling attacks with breathtaking stroke play, breaking partnerships with virtually every style of bowling imaginable, and producing spectacular catches that shifted the course of matches Long after his retirement, he remained the benchmark by which every complete cricketer has been judged

From humble beginnings to global greatness

Born in Bridgetown, Barbados, on July 28, 1936, Sobers' path to immortality began under modest circumstances

Raised in a poor household after losing his father at just five years old, the young Garfield learned the game with improvised equipment, palm branches serving as bats and tightly rolled balls fashioned from tar Those simple beginnings concealed extraordinary natural talent that required little formal coaching before it began astonishing the cricket world

At only 16 years old, Sobers announced himself in first-class cricket with an eyecatching debut against the touring Indians, claiming four wickets to help Barbados secure victory Just a year later, he earned his first Test cap against England in Jamaica, introducing himself to international cricket with figures of 4-75

Initially selected as a left-arm spinner, it quickly became apparent that his gifts extended far beyond bowling His elegant stroke play, flawless timing and limitless versatility soon established him as one of cricket's most complete performers

The innings that changed cricket history

While Sobers displayed flashes of brilliance early in his career, one unforgettable innings elevated him into cricketing immortality

At Sabina Park in Kingston in February 1958, the 21-year-old left-hander compiled what remains one of the greatest Test innings ever played His unbeaten 365 against Pakistan shattered Len Hutton's longstanding world record of 364 and made Sobers the youngest player to score a Test triple century Remarkably, it was also his maiden Test hundred

The landmark score stood untouched for 36 years before another Caribbean batting genius, Brian Lara, eclipsed it in Antigua in 1994

Rather than guarding his own place in history, Sobers encouraged Lara to chase greatness

“There was a lot of pressure on him, people telling him not to break the record, to preserve it for the legend "So, I spoke to him in the dressing room during his innings and said, 'Go out and do it, man '"

It was a fitting gesture from a man whose legacy was never measured by personal milestones alone, but by the inspiration he provided to those who followed

The complete cricketer

Sobers' numbers remain extraordinary, but they reveal only part of his genius

Across 93 Test matches between 1954 and 1974, he amassed 8,032 runs at an average of 57 78, including 26 centuries, becoming the first player to surpass 8,000 Test runs With

the ball, he collected 235 wickets using an astonishing range that included left-arm pace, orthodox spin and wrist spin Add 109 catches in the slips and 39 Tests as captain, and his versatility becomes almost impossible to comprehend

His first-class career proved even more remarkable

Representing Barbados, the West Indies, Nottinghamshire and South Australia, Sobers scored more than 28,000 runs, claimed over 1,000 wickets and produced countless performances that have become woven into cricket folklore

Those accomplishments earned him a knighthood in 1975, recognition as one of Wisden's five Cricketers of the Century in 2000, and eventual induction into the ICC Hall of Fame in 2009

An all-round genius without equal

Statistics alone cannot fully explain why Sobers occupies such a unique place in sporting history

He could dominate attacks with graceful cover drives or overpower bowlers with brute force He bowled with swing, seam, finger spin and wrist spin, often within the same match He patrolled the slip cordon with lightning reflexes while leading the West Indies through one of the most important periods in the team's development

His extraordinary versatility led many, including the legendary Sir Donald Bradman, to recognize him as cricket's greatest allrounder, while Wisden placed him among the five greatest cricketers of the 20th century

Yet those who knew him best insist that his greatest qualities were not confined to the cricket field

His warmth, humility and generosity left impressions every bit as enduring as his countless records

The shot that became sporting folklore

Although Sobers authored countless unforgettable innings, one explosive display of power has become one of cricket's most enduring images

I n 1 9 6 8 , w h i l e r e p r e s e n t i n g Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan in Swansea, the Barbadian icon achieved what had never before been done in first-class cricket, striking six consecutive sixes in a single over

The unfortunate bowler was Malcolm

Sobers’ influence still resonates throughout international cricket. The ICC's highest individual honor in men's cricket, the Sir Garfield Sobers Award, bears his name, ensuring that each new generation of outstanding players is measured against the standard he established.

Nash, but the feat became immortal not simply because of its rarity It symbolized Sobers' fearless approach to the game Every delivery disappeared beyond the boundary, although the fifth almost produced a catch before the fielder tumbled over the rope

More than half a century later, it remains one of cricket's most replayed moments

Sobers himself often laughed at how the accomplishment came to define him

"Wherever I go (in) any part of the world, everybody mentions the six sixes You know, it seems as though it's the only thing I've ever done in cricket "

The achievement unintentionally made Nash famous as well

"I reckon I get asked about it if not once a week then at least once a month "

A legend beyond the boundary

Sobers' remarkable career was built on extraordinary natural talent, but it was accompanied by an easygoing personality that became part of his legend

Never one to hide from stories about enjoying life away from cricket, he openly acknowledged his fondness for socializing during his playing days, often doing so with characteristic wit

"Well, it's an exaggeration to say I was partying every night Just every other "

He added with a smile:

"The night before a Test match, I'd always be out and about all night Sometimes I didn't sleep at all before a big game "

Far from diminishing his reputation, the anecdotes reinforced the aura surrounding a player who consistently produced extraordinary performances regardless of the circumstances

For many who followed in his footsteps, Sobers' greatest gift was not simply his cricketing genius but the kindness and humility he extended to others

Belize’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade (MFAFT) has clarified that the country has not been granted visa-free access to Spain or the wider Schengen Area, despite recent reports suggesting Belize was included on a Spanish visa-free travel list

In a statement issued Monday, July 20, 2026, the ministry said a list published by Spain on July 14, confirming visa-free access for citizens of 60 countries, including nine Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member states, was a restatement of existing European Union (EU) rules rather than a new decision granting additional countries visa exemptions

The ministry explained that the list reflects third countries whose nationals are already exempt from visa requirements when crossing the external borders of the Schengen Area under European Union Regulation (EU) 2018/1806

“These determinations are made collectively by EU Member States,” the ministry said Belize remains among the countries whose citizens require a visa to enter the Schengen Area. The government noted that removing this requirement would require a formal legislative amendment at the EU level and cannot be achieved through a decision by an individual member state

The ministry said it has been actively engaging with Spain and the EU for several years to secure a full Schengen visa waiver for Belizean nationals

As part of those efforts, the EU agreed in November 2025 that Belizean citizens holding biometric passports would be eligible for multiple-entry Schengen visas valid for up to five years The ministry described the change as a significant improvement that has made travel to Spain and other Schengen countries easier for business, tourism, education and family visits

However, discussions toward a comprehensive visa waiver agreement between Belize and the EU remain ongoing

The Foreign Ministry said it continues to advocate through diplomatic channels for full visa-free access to the Schengen Area, which it considers an important priority given Belize’s longstanding relationship with the European Union

T&T High Court permanently halts Jack Warner extradition proceedings to U.S.

A Trinidad and Tobago High Court judge has permanently halted extradition proceedings against former FIFA vice president Jack Warner, ruling that the case breached his constitutional rights

Justice Karen Reid on Friday ordered that the extradition proceedings against Warner “be permanently stayed” and ruled that the Attorney General of Trinidad and Tobago must pay damages for breaches of Warner’s constitutional rights. The amount of damages will be determined by the court if the parties cannot reach an agreement

The Attorney General was also ordered to pay Warner’s legal costs, certified fit for Senior and Junior Counsel The assessment of damages has been scheduled for a case management conference on September 30 Warner, 82, faces 29 charges brought by U S authorities, including allegations of fraud, racketeering and illegal wire transfers linked to activities in the United States, Trinidad and Tobago and other countries between 1990 and June 2011

He was arrested in 2015 under a provisional warrant following a U S extradition request and later released on TT$2 5 million bail Warner was among several senior FIFA officials indicted after a 2015 investigation by

the U S Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Department of Justice into corruption in international football

The extradition proceedings had been delayed for years after Warner challenged the legality of the process, including the government’s decision to issue an Authority to Proceed (ATP) in 2015

In her 71-page ruling, Justice Reid found that the issuance of the ATP without an

arrangement between Trinidad and Tobago and the United States guaranteeing protections required under the country’s Extradition (Commonwealth and Foreign Territories) Act violated Warner’s constitutional rights

The judge said the absence of such an arrangement breached Warner’s right to liberty and his right not to be deprived of liberty except through due process of law

under the Trinidad and Tobago Constitution Justice Reid also found that continuing the extradition proceedings after the Privy Council proceedings, where the state had represented that a special arrangement existed between Trinidad and Tobago and the United States, further breached Warner’s constitutional protections

The extradition case had previously moved through several stages of legal challenges Warner’s judicial review application against the 2015 ATP was dismissed by the High Court in 2017, and subsequent appeals were dismissed by the Court of Appeal in 2019 and the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in 2022

The proceedings resumed before the Magistrate’s Court before Warner filed a constitutional challenge in March 2023, arguing that the state had failed in its duty of candour and violated his rights

In addition to permanently staying the extradition proceedings, Justice Reid issued an order preventing the government from enforcing previous costs orders made against Warner in earlier judicial review proceedings

At least 53 people have died after a ferry capsized off the coast of Guyana, Prime Minister Mark Phillips said Tuesday, as rescue and recovery teams continued searching for missing passengers

The MV Barima was travelling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma in Guyana’s Essequibo region when it overturned on Saturday night

A search operation began early Sunday, with 76 people rescued so far, according to Phillips The prime minister revised the death toll twice on Tuesday, increasing it from 41 to 53

“A total of 53 bodies have been recovered,” Phillips told a press conference “We’ve recorded 76 persons that were rescued as of 6 p m today ”

A u t h o r i t i e s h a v e f a c e d uncertainty over the number of people aboard the vessel after an inaccurate passenger manifest listed 133 passengers Public Works

Minister Juan Edghill said the government later determined that 179 people were likely on board when the ferry capsized The ageing vessel, built in 1939, had departed in the afternoon and a distress call was received about eight hours later The route requires vessels to travel through coastal

waters before entering rivers to reach Port Kaituma, a remote community surrounded by dense rainforest

Two crew members aboard the ferry tested positive for marijuana following the incident, Phillips said on Sunday, adding that an investigation was underway

President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali on Tuesday assured families of those still missing that search and recovery operations would continue through the night, with additional divers, vessels and specialized equipment deployed

“We will have our team here all night Any recovery that is made, we will take the photos and put it on the system so you can identify it,” Ali told relatives gathered at the site

The president said authorities would provide regular updates and that government officials would remain involved throughout the operation

“This is difficult It is painful It is an emotional shock and trauma We are here to support you throughout the process Long after the process,” Ali said

The operation includes seven Coast Guard vessels, police resources, private sector support and civilian volunteers Helicopters

from the Regional Security System and Omni Aviation have also been deployed to search coastal areas and nearby waterways Ali said recovery teams had maintained an overnight presence near the wreck after bodies were seen drifting from the vessel He said post-mortem examinations had been completed on 20 victims, with 11 bodies already released to families according to their wishes Medical teams, including doctors and pathologists, are working to speed up the identification process Officials said about 36 victims have been identified by relatives Ali said the immediate priority remains locating everyone affected by the tragedy “The focus now is on the families, on recovery, still hoping for rescue, on recovery and on helping the families through this difficult time,” he said

Jamaica strengthens monitoring of imports amid U.S. cyclospora outbreak

The Jamaican Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining says it has intensified its monitoring of imported fruits and vegetables following an ongoing multistate outbreak of cyclosporiasis in the United States that has been linked to contaminated shredded iceberg lettuce

The move comes as U S public health authorities continue investigating the outbreak, which is caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis According to the U S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as of July 18, 2026, there have been 1,644 confirmed cases of the intestinal illness across multiple states, including 94 hospitalizations

The U S Food and Drug Administration

(FDA) has also issued a recall of a specific brand of shredded iceberg lettuce over suspected Cyclospora contamination while expanding traceback investigations, product sampling and border screening efforts to determine the source of the outbreak

In response, Jamaica's Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining said its Plant Quarantine and Produce Inspection Branch (PQPIB) has heightened surveillance of imported plant products that could potentially pose a risk to local consumers

The ministry noted that Jamaica imports a wide range of fruits and vegetables from the United States for both the domestic market and the tourism sector, making it essential to closely monitor the evolving situation

"Given the uncertainties surrounding the ongoing outbreak in the United States and pending further information from U S authorities and the completion of the traceback investigation, the PQPIB has strengthened its monitoring of imports of plant products that

may pose a potential risk of Cyclospora contamination," the ministry said

The ministry explained that the PQPIB, which regulates the importation of plants and plant products into Jamaica, has been actively tracking developments to safeguard public health

As part of the enhanced measures, the ministry is working alongside the Ministry of Health and Wellness, the Consumer Affairs Commission, the National Compliance and Regulatory Authority, the Jamaica Customs Agency and other regulatory bodies to strengthen surveillance at Jamaica's ports of entry

The increased scrutiny will focus particularly on products identified in FDA food safety advisories and recall notices

Officials also confirmed that all consignments of imported iceberg lettuce, along with other leafy vegetables and fruits originating in or passing through the United States, are being carefully reviewed to verify

traceability documentation and ensure compliance with Jamaica's import regulations

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that causes cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness commonly associated with the consumption of contaminated fresh produce or water

Symptoms can include prolonged diarrhea, loss of appetite, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue and weight loss While the illness can resolve on its own in some cases, treatment with prescribed antibiotics is often required

The ministry said it will continue monitoring the situation in collaboration with international and local public health agencies and will implement additional measures if necessary

Consumers are encouraged to stay informed by following official food safety updates issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, the CDC and the FDA, particularly regarding product recalls and ongoing investigations

UN warns Haiti at critical juncture as gang violence threatens election plans

Haiti is facing a critical moment as it attempts to restore security and move toward elections amid persistent gang violence, political instability and a worsening humanitarian crisis, the United Nations Security Council heard on Monday

Senior UN officials told the 15-member council that while Haiti has made some progress toward restoring democratic governance, armed gangs continue to pose the country’s greatest challenge, leaving millions displaced and struggling with food insecurity

“[Haiti’s] transition stands at a critical moment,” said Carlos Ruiz Massieu, the UN secretary-general’s special representative and head of the UN Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH)

Ruiz Massieu said Haiti’s transitional authorities had recently adopted a revised electoral decree and reached agreement on an electoral budget, creating a foundation for renewed momentum However, he said the next priority is the establishment of a credible and realistic electoral calendar

“The Haitian people have been waiting for far too long,” he said, urging the international community to ensure that recent progress

translates into meaningful improvements in the lives of citizens

The UN official warned that insecurity remains the most serious threat to Haiti’s political transition, with women and children bearing a disproportionate share of the impact from gang violence

He said security concerns must not become a reason to delay elections, adding that the full deployment of the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) remains essential to creating conditions for a credible electoral process

Jack Christofides, the special representative for the GSF, said the multinational force has begun operations after establishing its

headquarters, command structure, intelligence systems and rules of engagement

The force has opened its first forward operating base, launched regular patrols and carried out operations targeting gang infrastructure in parts of Port-au-Prince

Christofides highlighted a June 21 operation in Tabarre, where the force detained suspects, removed gang barricades and destroyed hundreds of Molotov cocktails He also said recent operations led to the seizure of weapons and ammunition and the dismantling of improvised incendiary device caches

However, he cautioned that Haiti’s security crisis would not be resolved quickly

The GSF was created to replace the smaller, Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support mission and has been authorised to support Haitian authorities in combating armed groups and restoring security

Monica Juma, executive director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), said Haiti’s crisis cannot be viewed solely as a security problem, describing it as a governance crisis driven by organised crime

She said gangs are increasingly attempting to control not only territory but also transpor-

tation routes, economic activity and governance systems

Juma said the crisis also has regional implications, involving illegal firearms trafficking, cocaine smuggling, migrant trafficking and maritime criminal networks

She stressed that security operations must be accompanied by stronger courts, prisons, police institutions and financial investigations

“Without this, security gains will be but temporary,” she said

Several countries told the council that while the deployment of the GSF represents progress, lasting stability in Haiti will require more than military and security measures

France said restoring security remains Haiti’s “absolute priority” and is necessary for advancing the political transition and holding elections

The Dominican Republic’s Foreign Affairs Minister Roberto Álvarez Gil raised concerns about the gap between the force’s authorised strength of 5,550 personnel and the approximately 1,000 troops currently deployed

“Time is not on Haiti’s side,” he warned, urging the international community to accelerate support for the mission

Haiti calls for international support as it pushes toward elections

Haiti’s Foreign Affairs Minister Raina Forbin has called for sustained international support as the country works toward holding “free, credible, inclusive and above all participatory elections” following years of political instability and escalating gang violence

Addressing the United Nations Security Council on Monday, Forbin urged the international community not to abandon the French-speaking Caribbean Community (Caricom) nation as it seeks to restore security, strengthen democratic institutions and return to constitutional order

The last time Haitians elected a president was in 2016 The country has remained without an elected leader since President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated in July 2021, after which armed gangs expanded their control over large parts of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and several rural communities

Forbin said elections that restore public trust and strengthen democratic legitimacy are essential to achieving lasting peace and stability

“This is what 12 million men, women and children in Haiti are hoping for,” she told the

council, adding that seven of Haiti’s 10 departments are now ready for electoral activities without major security obstacles

She said the deployment of the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) to the remaining three departments is critical to ensuring Haitians can exercise their right to vote freely and without intimidation

The GSF is a 5,550-member, United Nations-backed multinational security mission established under UN Security Council Resolution 2793 to support efforts to combat armed groups controlling parts of Port-au-

Prince The force works alongside the Haitian National Police and has been authorised to conduct intelligence-led operations, including arrests of gang members

“Security is a necessary bedrock for legitimate elections,” Forbin said, noting that the Haitian government has taken steps to strengthen national security institutions

She said more than 2,000 police officers have been trained since January under a government programme, while 1,500 new members are being recruited into the armed forces

What’s up with the birthrate?

Why is it down?

According to an astonishing report in the 2025 edition of the Economic and Social Survey of Jamaica, the nation’s population grew by only 600 over the period from 2024 to 2025 The population amounted to 2,763,600 in 2024 and 2,764,200 at the end of 2025

Population decline is one of the most important demographic trends in today’s world Jamaica is not alone

Many countries, including the United States, Canada, much of Europe, Japan, South Korea, and even China, have seen birth rates fall below the level needed to replace their populations. The decline is creating concerns about the future economic viability of some of these countries

Unlike in former years, when countries had to take stringent measures to stem population growth, the opposite is now true, as what’s needed are expanding populations consisting of young, energetic people, not aging, geriatric people

There are several factors accounting for the population decline Probably foremost is the fact that people are marrying later in life, or not at all

Many young adults have decided to delay marriage while pursuing education or careers

Unlike in the past, when women got married in their early twenties and prepared to have multiple children early in their marriages, more women are getting married in their mid-thirties or later and are only willing to have one or two children Moreover, the cost of raising children has increased Housing, childcare, education, and healthcare are extremely costly, acting as strong deterrents to having several children Young people often postpone having children when jobs, housing, or finances feel insecure

The women of today have more educational and career opportunities than women of yesteryear This is a positive social development, but it often leads to having children later and having fewer children

Reliable contraception and family planning

also allow couples to choose to raise smaller families and control their family size

Modern societies are characterized by changing values and lifestyles Instead of staying rooted in a large family, including a number of children, more people prioritize travel, careers, personal freedom, and the luxury of less family responsibility

Another contributing factor is urbanization

Increasingly over the years, more young people have relocated from rural areas to live in cities Children are generally more expensive to raise in cities and contribute less to family income than they once did in rural communities

Migration has also been a major problem for developing countries like Jamaica The country has experienced significant emigration for decades Many young adults leave for opportunities abroad, reducing the number of births at home This is evident in the Jamaican diaspora, which is estimated at more than three million people, larger than the population of Jamaica

The growth rate of 0 0% in Jamaica is very disconcerting If these trends continue, Jamaica and other countries with sharply declining birth rates will face several serious challenges

An aging population, with a growing proportion of elderly people, has problems of its own, including the need for more and better healthcare for seniors and increased financial pressure on pension systems

There will gradually be fewer workers to support businesses and public services, resulting in slower economic growth because there are fewer people entering the workforce

In Jamaica, continued emigration combined with low birth rates can eventually lead to shortages of skilled workers and slower national development

But there are some positive aspects, too An aging population places less pressure on housing, schools, and natural resources Smaller families may also be able to invest more in their children's education and well-being

Measures to increase the birthrate, and by extension the population growth rate, are a major financial conundrum for governments, particularly those of small, developing nations like Jamaica Nonetheless, several countries have tried many approaches These include offering financial incentives such as child allowances or tax credits; providing affordable childcare and paid parental leave; increasing the availability of affordable housing for young families; and improving work-life balance through flexible work arrangements, including working from home

Some countries, like Canada, have encouraged immigration to offset labor shortages A few months ago, the Jamaican prime minister issued an invitation to the diaspora to return home to help stem the problems associated with the declining birthrate, apparently hopeful that Jamaicans returning home with skills and talent will help bridge gaps in labor demand

Countries have also sought to create economic conditions that give young adults confidence about their future

Results have been mixed Countries such as Japan and South Korea have spent billions encouraging larger families, but birth rates have remained very low. This suggests that no single policy can easily reverse the trend

For Jamaica, the most effective long-term strategy is likely to combine stronger economic growth and better-paying jobs; create affordable housing for young families; implement policies that encourage skilled Jamaicans abroad to return; provide better support for parents through childcare and education; and invest more in healthcare and education

The decline in birth rates is not simply a Jamaican issue It’s a global demographic shift that will shape economies, healthcare systems, and societies for decades Countries that successfully support young families while maintaining strong economies will likely be best positioned to adapt to this changing world

Jamaican chef and restaurateur

Shea Stewart is setting his sights beyond opening another upscale restaurant. With the launch of Komo Mai in New Kingston, he hopes to help spark a broader conversation about whether Caribbean cuisine can earn a place among the world's most celebrated fine dining destinations — including recognition from the Michelin Guide

Located at 69 Knutsford Boulevard, Komo Mai offers a contemporary dining experience that blends Caribbean flavors with international culinary techniques rather than relying on traditional interpretations of Jamaican cuisine

The menu features dishes such a s C o c o n u t M i s o S a l m o n , Tamarind Lamb, Bouillabaisse served with festival brioche, oxtail lasagna and steak kebabs, alongside a selection of craft cocktails

More than its striking design, however, Komo Mai is positioning itself as part of a larger movement to redefine Caribbean fine dining

Stewart's vision challenges the notion that Caribbean cuisine belongs only in casual or traditional settings, instead presenting it through refined techniques, premium ingredients and globally inspired presentations while maintaining regional flavors and identity

School officials said the initiative comes amid persistent concerns about illegal passing around school buses

According to the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services, an estimated 40 million motorists illegally pass stopped school buses across the United States each year, putting children at risk as they board and exit buses

Miami-Dade, South Florida cities tighten e-bike and scooter rules amid safety concerns

Miami-Dade, South Florida cities tighten e-bike and scooter rules amid safety concerns

South Florida communities are introducing stricter regulations for electric bicycles and scooters as the vehicles become increasingly common on local roads, bike lanes and sidewalks, with officials citing concerns about rider, pedestrian and motorist safety

On Tuesday, Miami-Dade County commissioners approved new rules for e-bikes and scooters on the Rickenbacker Causeway, a county roadway that has been the site of several serious and fatal crashes involving the vehicles

Under the new regulations, e-bikes and scooters traveling on the causeway are limited to a maximum speed of 20 mph Riders are prohibited from using sidewalks and must operate only in designated bike lanes or on the roadway

Officials said the changes are designed to reduce collisions and create safer conditions for cyclists, pedestrians and drivers

The action follows several high-profile incidents involving electric vehicles across South Florida Police previously said a teenager riding an electric dirt bike on the Rickenbacker Causeway struck and killed a bicyclist Miami Beach has also reported fatal crashes involving electric scooters

Miami-Dade Commissioner Raquel Regalado said additional measures may be needed throughout the county and encouraged municipalities to adopt similar regulations

“I am happy to draft an ordinance for cities to opt in, but it needs to have a lot of things that are not in this ordinance because this ordinance came after two years of working with Key Biscayne,” Regalado said

Other communities have already moved to impose their own restrictions

Sunny Isles Beach recently approved an ordinance aimed at strengthening safety requirements for e-bike riders The rules prohibit e-bikes and scooters on sidewalks, require riders to be at least 16 years old and mandate that operators carry a governmentissued ID while riding

The city defines an e-bike as a bicycle or tricycle with fully operable pedals, a seat or saddle, a maximum speed of 28 mph and an electric motor producing less than 750 watts

Sunny Isles Beach officials said enforcement tickets will begin being issued Aug 16 Violators face fines of $250 for a first

offense and $500 for subsequent violations

“We don’t want to see our children getting hurt, we don’t want to see innocent bystanders that are just walking on the street,” said Sunny Isles Beach Police Lt Melissa Porra “Most of our residents here, I believe, are going to really listen and are going to comply ” Miami Beach, Key Biscayne and Coral Springs are among the other South Florida municipalities that have implemented regulations addressing e-bike and scooter use

Officials across the region said education will be a key part of enforcement efforts as cities work to balance the growing popularity of electric mobility options with the need to protect public safety

Chronic Law charged in US over alleged illegal firearm possession

Jamaican dancehall artist Ackeme Jermane Campbell, professionally known as Chronic Law, has been charged in the United States with allegedly illegally possessing firearms while residing in the country on an O1B visa

The 32-year-old Jamaican citizen, who lists Jamaica and Davenport, Florida, as his residences, was charged with one count of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, according to the U S Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Georgia

Campbell was arrested in Miami, Florida, on July 5 and remains in federal custody after a July 9 court appearance before U S Magistrate Judge Eduardo I Sanchez in the Southern District of Florida He was ordered detained without bond

The criminal complaint was filed on July 1 in the Middle District of Georgia and unsealed on July 14

According to court documents, Campbell was living and performing in the United States under an O-1B non-immigrant visa, which is issued to individuals with extraordinary ability in areas such as the arts

Prosecutors allege that on Nov 15, 2025, Campbell was driving at excessive speeds in Turner County, Georgia, when deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop Authorities said he fled from officers, reaching speeds of more than 120 miles per hour before the pursuit ended

Following the chase, officers allegedly discovered several firearms and ammunition in the vehicle, including two semiautomatic pistols, a semiautomatic rifle, multiple magazines and a total of 92 rounds of ammunition One of the firearms was reportedly identified as stolen from Miami Court documents allege that Campbell later admitted to federal agents that the firearms belonged to him and that he had not obtained the required waiver allowing him to possess firearms while in the United States

U S authorities said Campbell’s alleged affiliation with a criminal gang, concerns about potential flight from the country, and the number of firearms and ammunition involved were factors in the decision to keep him detained

If convicted, Campbell faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, followed by up to three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000

The charges are allegations, and Campbell is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court

Hetmyer, Rutherford rescue WI to consolation ODI victory over New Zealand

The West Indies ended their One-Day International (ODI) series against New Zealand with renewed confidence, producing a determined run chase to secure a consolation victory after suffering defeats in the opening three matches

Although the visitors had already wrapped up the series, the hosts delivered the response they had been searching for, successfully chasing 269 thanks to a composed unbeaten innings from Shimron Hetmyer and a game-changing contribution from Sherfane Rutherford

The victory arrives at an important moment for the Caribbean side as it builds momentum ahead of its upcoming World Cup qualifying campaign

The pursuit was far from straightforward West Indies stumbled to 123 for four, with New Zealand appearing firmly in control after tightening the screws through their spin attack

Captain Shai Hope's departure left the home side in a difficult position, with 151 runs still needed His partnership with Keacy Carty yielded just 59 runs from 99 deliveries, highlighting the pressure created by New Zealand's disciplined bowling

Carty battled hard for his 20 from 54 balls, producing the slowest innings of 20 or more by a West Indies batter since Marlon Samuels managed 25 from 65 deliveries against Pakistan in July 2013

The visitors gradually wrestled command of the contest after Mitchell Santner introduced spin in the 10th over

By the 16th over, New Zealand had virtually abandoned pace from one end, allowing their spinners to dictate proceedings Working in tandem, the slow bowlers conceded only 37 runs across a combined 13over spell, frustrating the West Indies batters and forcing them into a cautious approach

Jayden Lennox continued his remarkable series by claiming another wicket, taking his tally to 14 wickets for the four-match contest

That achievement lifted him above legendary spinners Shane Warne, Anil Kumble, Sunil Narine, and Shahid Afridi for the most wickets by a spinner in a bilateral ODI series

Just when New Zealand appeared poised to complete a clean sweep, Rutherford and Hetmyer shifted the momentum dramatically Rutherford counterattacked from the outset, refusing to allow the spinners to dictate terms After surviving a dropped catch by Will Young at deep square leg when he was on seven, he made the most of the reprieve, compiling 61 to register his second half-century in his last 15 ODI innings

Alongside him, Hetmyer anchored the chase with maturity and

aggression in equal measure

The pair combined for a match-defining 95-run, fifth-wicket partnership from only 90 deliveries, transforming a tense pursuit into one the West Indies could realistically control

The drama was not over

Jacob Duffy struck twice in successive deliveries during the 45th over, reviving New Zealand's hopes and leaving the West Indies needing 21 runs from 32 balls with only two wickets remaining Hetmyer, however, refused to surrender the initiative

The left-hander launched Duffy for two towering sixes to swing the contest decisively back in the hosts' favor before finishing unbeaten on a superb 69 from 64 deliveries, guiding the West Indies to victory

It marked only the third successful ODI run chase of Hetmyer's career in which he remained unbeaten at the finish, capping an innings that combined composure, power, and impeccable timing

While the victory could not prevent New Zealand from claiming the series, it provided the West Indies with a much-needed lift after three consecutive defeats

More importantly, the performances of Hetmyer and Rutherford offered encouraging signs that the Caribbean batting unit can deliver under pressure, giving the team valuable confidence as its attention turns toward the crucial challenge of World Cup qualification

Sobers

fromA3

Former West Indies fast-bowling great Courtney Walsh remembered the man who inspired and mentored him throughout his career

"Really, really sad, but happy that I was able to share some very good moments with a great man, a legend in our neck of the woods

"He will be missed, just not for cricket, but for the person that he was Rest in peace, my friend, rest in peace "

Former West Indies opener and West Indies Players' Association president Wavell Hinds echoed that sentiment, emphasizing that Sobers' achievements were matched by the qualities he displayed away from the game

"Sir Garfield Sobers, the greatest cricketer of all time, was naturally the gold standard of the sport

"His undisputed great exploits on the field were matched by his humility and grace off it He was an inspiration to me and my generation of cricketers "

A legacy that will never fade

Few athletes have so completely redefined their sport

Sobers did not merely collect records, he expanded the boundaries of what one cricketer could accomplish Batting, bowling, fielding and leadership all became expressions of a singular talent that seemed to know no limits

His influence still resonates throughout international cricket The ICC's highest individual honor in men's cricket, the Sir Garfield Sobers Award, bears his name, ensuring that each new generation of outstanding players is measured against the standard he established

Yet his greatest legacy cannot be quantified by centuries, wickets or trophies

He gave the Caribbean a sporting hero whose brilliance united islands, inspired dreams and demonstrated that greatness could emerge from the humblest beginnings His elegance became synonymous with West Indies cricket, while his achievements elevated the region's standing on the global stage

Roach to be honored at Kensington Oval after joining WI 300-wicket legends

Cricket West Indies (CWI) will celebrate one of the defining achievements in Caribbean cricket when veteran fast bowler Kemar Roach is formally honored for reaching the milestone of 300 Test wickets during Tuesday's fifth One-Day International between the West Indies and New Zealand at Kensington Oval

The tribute, scheduled for the innings break, will recognize a career that has spanned nearly two decades and established the Barbadian as one of the finest fast bowlers of the modern era

Roach reached the coveted landmark during the West Indies' victory over Sri Lanka in the opening Test of their two-match series in Antigua, becoming just the fifth West Indian and second Barbadian to achieve the feat

With his 300th Test wicket, Roach secured a place alongside some of the most celebrated bowlers in West Indies history

His achievement places him in an elite fraternity that includes Courtney Walsh (519 wickets), Sir Curtly Ambrose (405), Malcolm Marshall (376), and Lance Gibbs (305), names synonymous with Caribbean cricketing excellence

The on-field presentation will bring together officials from Cricket West Indies, the Government of Barbados, and the Barbados Cricket Association, reflecting the significance of Roach's accomplishment for both his homeland and the wider Caribbean

Since making his Test debut against Bangladesh in 2009, Roach has built a reputation as one of international cricket's most dependable fast bowlers

His 300 wickets have been claimed at an outstanding average of approximately 28 83, while maintaining an economy rate of 3 10 runs per over

Along the way, he has produced 12 fivewicket hauls and one memorable 10wicket match performance, repeatedly delivering match-winning spells against the world's strongest batting lineups

Renowned for his impeccable control, subtle late movement, and unwavering accuracy, Roach has enjoyed success in every major Testplaying nation, making him the cornerstone of the West Indies bowling attack for much of the past 16 years

While his statistics tell the story of an exceptional bowler, Roach's influence has extended well beyond the numbers

As one of the senior figures in the West Indies dressing room, the 38year-old has embraced the responsibility of mentoring the next generation of Caribbean fast bowlers, providing leadership and guidance while continuing to perform at the highest level himself

His longevity, professionalism, and unwavering commitment have made him a role model for aspiring cricketers throughout the region

Cricket West Indies President Dr Kishore Shallow hailed Roach's contribution to the regional game, describing him as both an outstanding servant of West Indies cricket and an inspiration to future generations

“For the better part of two decades, Kemar has represented the West Indies with distinction, displaying extraordinary skill, heart and determination every time he has worn the maroon cap," Dr Shallow said "He has been an outstanding ambassador for Caribbean cricket, and an inspiration to generations of young fast bowlers "

Dr Shallow said Roach's achievement deserved recognition among the game's all-time greats
