Keeping updated on current horticulture issues on the prairies and in Canada is a challenge! Especially when many of the owners of horticulture companies are owner/ operators, the challenge is first getting the information and secondly getting that information out to the employees in a timely manner to be useful in everyday horticulture practices.

Being a part of the SNLA means every member company can connect to other member companies for support. By sharing knowledge with each other we save time and time is money. My company has recently benefited from another member taking time to share information. So working together makes a difference!

How it works: • Members are encouraged to inform their fleet manager or fleet sales person that they are a member of the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association and they are entitled to Competitive Assistance or Fleet Assistance.

• The CNLA program is very competitive, unfortunately it cannot be used in combination with any other incentive available.

• In order for a member to receive the discount at a dealership, CNLA must send the sales rep at the dealership a letter confirming the membership, along with a processing code • There is a $100 administration fee per vehicle that must be paid by the member to CNLA before the membership confirmation letter will be sent.

NATIONAL AWARDS OF LANDSCAPE EXCELLENCE PRESENTED IN ST. JOHN’S

Since its inception in 2003, the national awards have expanded to include three other awards of excellence. This year, Sheridan Nurseries in Toronto, Ontario won the Garden Centre of the Year Award for their commitment to growing teams, gardens, sales, environment, gardeners, technology and connections within the retail sector. CD’s Trees in Newfoundland and Phoenix Perennials in British Columbia also received honourable mentions in the garden centre category.

Winners of the National Awards of Landscape Excellence were announced at the 11th annual gala ceremony in St. John’s, NL on Wednesday, January 29, 2014. Eight awards were given out to members across the country that showcased excellence in the landscape, retail and nursery sectors of the industry.

Winkelmolen Nurseries Ltd. in Ontario won the prestigious Grower of the Year Award. Their entry will be submitted to the International Grower of the Year Award competition, hosted by the International Association of Horticulture Producers in Qingdao, China later this year.

Landscape Newfoundland and Labrador hosted the event in conjunction with its provincial Awards of Landscape Excellence. It was a fun evening with members, staff, volunteers and other distinguished guests gathered to celebrate the best in the industry. Competition was fierce in the landscape category, with 41 entries coming in from across Canada. CNLA wishes to congratulate all of the companies who submitted their projects, with each displaying a high level of expertise.

The final award of the evening was presented to the Veterans Memorial Parkway Community Program (VMPCP) for their commitment to the betterment of a public green space. Barry Sandler, Executive Director of VMPCP and Grant Harrison, President, accepted the Green for Life Community Award. This program has seen to the planting of 800 large calliper trees along the parkway, with hopes to double that number by Canada’s sesquicentennial in 2017. This is the second Green for Life Award to be presented at the national awards.

TOUGH NEW FOREIGNWORKERS RULES BEGIN, EMPOWERING OFFICIALS TO INSPECT WORKPLACES

foreign workers are not swiping their jobs following last spring’s furor over laid-off workers at RBC being ordered to train their replacements, including those who came to Canada on temporary work permits.

“We are taking action to ensure that Canadians are always first in line for available jobs,” Jason Kenney, minister of employment and social development, said in a statement on the new rules, which were first announced in the wake of those controversies.

Tough new regulations aimed at quelling fears that foreigners are snatching jobs from Canadians kicked in on December 31, 2013, empowering government officials to conduct workplace inspections without warrants and to blacklist employers who break the rules.

Among the new restrictions is the elimination of the socalled 15 per cent rule, which allowed companies to pay temporary foreign workers 15 per cent less than the going rate for any given position as long as the employer had paid Canadians that lower rate as well.

The regulations also allow government officials to interview foreign workers about their working conditions and to demand documentation from employers proving they’ve complied with the federal Temporary Foreign Worker Program.

Ottawa also began charging a $275 fee for companies applying for a TFW permit, and required employers to prove they’d made every effort to fill their openings with Canadians before turning to foreign workers.

The feds can conduct their workplace inspections for a period of six years, dated from the first day of employment of a foreign worker. Work permits will be revoked if an employer is discovered to have provided false information that “is having or will have a significant negative effect on the labour market in Canada,” the rules stipulate.

Provinces such as Saskatchewan and Alberta have been quietly urging the government for months to ease up on the restrictions. Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall even made a face-to-face appeal to Prime Minister Stephen Harper on the issue in November.

CNLA is helping member garden centres recycle plastic pots again this year. Show your customers that our industry is doing our part to reduce our impact on the environment by participating this year. The process is easy: • Register your garden centre with CNLA to be listed on the website as a drop-off location, and included on all press releases.

• Work with the recycler of your choice. A list of suggested recyclers is available on the CNLA website, and the office is willing to work with you to help you find a suitable recycler.

• Tell your customers to bring back their plastic pots from June 20 – July 1st – promotional materials are available to download for free from the CNLA website.

• Ensure the pots are stacked as per the requirements by your recycler • Take photos and keep track of the weight of plastic you collect to use in our media communications.

The Landscape Industry Certified Manager designation is for a select group of business owners and managers that have chosen to set themselves apart for the competition by proudly achieving their designation. Less than 1% of all owner/managers in our industry can claim they are Landscape Industry Certified.
