He doesn’t think bullying is a huge problem at school.

He has some advice for anyone looking to live the golden rule like Gibbs suggested.

“Try to help people out with bullying and try to be as nice as you can to everyone.”

Here are important questions concerning bullying; See how deans and counselors answer them Where is the line drawn between bullying and freedom of speech?

If a person is offended by what is written on your shirt, are you bullying them? According to Dean Aaron Karrer, the answer is no.

“An important part of bullying is that it is an intentional act. It is intended to cause harm.

Kids that speak their mind and have a difference in opinions are not intending to hurt the other person,” Dean Karrer said. “They are intending to put their opinion out there. A disagreement may hurt someone’s feelings, but that is not an intended act done over time.”

An act is defined as bullying if it is intended and over a period of time.

“Bullying is also defined as a differential in perceived power,” Dean Karrer said.

Having an opinion and the right to say what you want are not bad things. If it offends someone else, that is a peer conflict, not the intended act of bullying. Differences in opinions and peer conflicts are important issues, but are not the same things as bullying.

Do peer conflicts get the same amount of attention from the deans and counselors even though they are not classified as bullying?

According to Dean Karrer, the answer is yes, peer conflicts are also important issues that must be dealt with.

“When you are making them feel intentionally uncomfortable at school because of what you are saying, I’m going to tell you to change what you are saying,” Dean Karrer said. “It is not the wrong thing to have your belief system. The interaction is what we have to modify.”

Having opinions is great, but it is also necessary to respect the opinions of others.

“We have to create an environment where kids can think about those words,” Dean Karrer said.

How do the deans and counselors deal with a bullying situation?

“When the bully is approached by us, we work hard to educate the bully. When the victim comes to us and talks about it, we try to work them through how to help themselves,” Dean Karrer said.

“It really is all about educating those two parties before there ever is punishment.”

Counselor LuAnn Davis agreed.

“We have lots of ways to combat bullying that doesn’t involve direct confrontation,” Mrs. Davis said.

Education is the first priority in a bullying situation, and punishment is the back end.

“If we try to modify behavior through education

Don’t get upset,” Brooks Gibbs says to the auditorium full of students. “If you get upset, the bully wins. And bullying, in simplest terms, is a game of winning and losing.” He said this multiple times until his audience said it back with a volume satisfoactory to him.Gibbs paced back and forth, demanding the full attention of his audience. He used the repeat-after-me technique to help the message sink in. When he felt attention to his talk waiver, he didn’t get discouraged, but managed to regain it.

and it doesn’t work, then punitive matters come in to play. There will be punishment for the behavior,” Dean Karrer said. “Ultimately that is not where we want to take it. We want to fix the problem.

Punishing does not always fix the problem. What fixes the problem is getting you to understand why it is a problem.”

How can students be more comfortable reporting a bullying issue?

“Reporting doesn’t mean confrontation,” Mrs. Davis said. “It means solving the problem in a way everyone is comfortable with.”

Students should have no fear of coming to the office with a bullying problem, but a trusted adult can also help in the situation.

“Maybe you go to a teacher you already know.

That teacher can then contact us. Hopefully there is some adult in this building, that whoever is having the problem can feel comfortable with and can go to for advice,” Mrs. Davis said. “Maybe if they need to escape they don’t go straight down here, they go straight to that trusted room.”

Students can expect confidentiality when reporting. There is also an anonymous crisis

where bullying can be reported. The number for the hotline is 379-7710.

Why has there been so much anti-bullying awareness recently?

“It is a school-wide initiative. We’ve always talked about it, but it’s been ramped up. I think perhaps in the Counseling and Deans Office, and maybe even the Administration Office, we’ve always dealt with that,” Mrs. Davis said. “I think we’re spreading out the new so teachers become aware. Sometimes you don’t recognize it, or as a teacher you have thirty students and you think it is something else. They’re trying to help everybody be able to recognize the signs.”

Dean Karrer believes that it is important for students to understand bullying.

“I think it is a step in the right direction. I think we have great kids at Columbus North High School. I think that often times our bullying situations are started by kids that feel like something is just not right,” Dean Karrer said. “Not necessarily the bully or the victim. They see it going on and they want to a part of the solution.

Ultimately, what is going to help is if kids find it as an important issue.”

The word “bullying” seems to appear everywhere. It’s a hot topic from courtrooms to classrooms. This issue, The Triangle staff provides 10 tips to identify, deal with, and move on from bullying

B

ullies suck. There are always people in our lives with whom we do not get along, but sometimes disagreements can evolve into hurtful situations. When bullying takes place, it can cause lasting damage. However, bullying is only a problem when you let it become one. There are measures you can take to stop an annoyance from becoming a wound.

1. Speak with an adult. Possibly the most important tip on the list. If you are being bullied, the first step is to inform an adult. It can be hard to seek help, but an adult is generally the most qualified, or can seek the most qualified, person to deal with bullying.

2. Opinion vs. attack. There is a difference between an opinion and bullying. When a statement is made to be degrading or hateful, it becomes an attack or verbal bullying. However, disagreeing with someone’s viewpoint and being offended by their words does not constitute bullying.

3. Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.

The saying is age-old, but the wisdom behind it is ageless. Words do hurt, but it is the strength of the victim that is measured with each jeer, not the strength of the bully. Remember to let some things go and not to take everything to heart.

4. Consider being selectively unplugged. In this day and age of information, it is easy to get lost in social media. However, the information you

provide about yourself online can be used to hurt you. Be conscious of what is being updated to the realm of cyberspace, because it can never truly be deleted.

5. Understand what kinds of things you say and understand how the other party may feel.

6. Don’t make it personal. People aren’t perfect. We sometimes say things we shouldn’t, or offend without even noticing. Give others the benefit of the doubt and don’t take seemingly rude comments personally, especially if you don’t know what the speaker really meant to say.

7. Within the framework of the legal system, North has its own rules for recognizing and dealing with bullying.

8. Stand up for your friend. While he or she may feel uncomfortable talking about the problem and may ask for privacy, you should tell a trusted adult if the hurtful behavior persists.

9. Don’t get physical. Words are so much easier to work with and forgive than broken bones.

10. Forgive but don’t forget. Holding grudges is counter-productive. It will aggravate the situation and prevent healing and recovery from the bullying.

Instead, use your experience to do good by being an advocate for the rights of other victims.

umb, stupid, idiotic, unintelligent- although unkind, these words all help get the point across to a friend. They allow someone to make a statement without using the “R” word. It is just as bad as using the “N” word for an AfricanAmerican or the “F” word for a homosexual.

In a recent discussion in English class, we were asked to make an argument for a word or phrase to be abolished from the English language. Among others, the “R” word was one that several people thought of and had strong opinions on getting rid

of. People don’t realize how their words carry in the halls and reach the ears of students with mental handicaps or people that have friends, relatives and other loved ones with mental disabilities.

Students of all varieties should be safe from such harsh criticism at school. They should never think of themselves in those terms just because some student is carelessly throwing around words without thinking of the consequences.

In the past, the word was used as a medical term to define a person or animal that was slower than was normal for that age.

Since then, science has come up with specific names for different types of mental illnesses and the “R” word is no longer medically correct. It has turned into a slang term to describe someone

or something that is viewed as stupid or idiotic, but because of its former meaning, it still hurts those with mental handicaps.

It is rude and careless to say it at all, in any capacity. I do not care if it is a “joke” or someone “didn’t mean it like that.” The boy two feet away who’s little brother is mentally handicapped isn’t going to take it that way. The girl around the corner, just within hearing range, with her own mental disabilities, won’t think of it as a joke. Those people and many, many more at this school are going to take it to heart and be deeply hurt by the “R” word.

So pick another word to use that doesn’t offend almost everyone. And, as always, stay classy, Columbus North.

When the spokespeople of Invisible Children visited here for the Kony 2012 campaign, I felt terrible for not being able to purchase one of their “action kits.” I felt like I wasn’t doing my part to help the children in Uganda, who were in danger of being abducted by the Lord’s Resistance Army, led

by Joseph Kony, and either forced to be sexslaves or child soldiers.

Then, shortly after the spokespeople visited, the video they had shown us went viral, raking in over 57 million views.

However, it’s 2012 no longer, and Kony has not been found. In addition, enthusiasm for the campaign significantly waned after it was discovered, according to CBS, that the organization spent 8.9 million dollars that year and of that, only 3.3 million went to programs in Africa.

Now, according to National Public Radio (NPR), almost two years later, a journalist/entrepreneur/adventurer/ filmmaker named Robert Young Pelton plans to launch a significantly smaller campaign called Dangerous.

He and his crew aim to raise $500,000 in crowd funding to go on a manhunt for Joseph Kony. However, his plan has drawn criticism.

“We wish him good luck, that’s all I can say,” Ugandan military spokesman, Lt. Col. Paddy Ankunda said to Epoch Times.

And given that multiple African governments and U.S special forces have failed to find Kony in the past, I think he’ll need it.

thletic trainer Robyn Coffer suggests sports drinks are beneficial if used wisely.

“Drinking Gatorade prevents dehydration, electrolyte loss and prevents cramps,” Coffer said. “They are beneficial in moderation.”

Sports drinks are used by athletes all over the world to replenish key nutrients in their bodies. Gatorade and Powerade are the top two of these drinks on the market right now. They are commonly used, but athletes do not always know what is put into these products. So do sports drinks aid athletes or cause them harm?

Without moderation, Gatorade can be harmful. It contains 11 percent of a human’s daily sodium value based on a 2,000 calorie diet, which might not sound like a lot but can add up quickly.

“Drinking too much Gatorade will cause dehydration,” athletic trainer Steve Souder said.

To get the full benefits of sports drinks, drink before, during and after exercise to replenish electrolytes. Gatorade is a great option in moderation, but there are other

ways to get energy before and after a game. Energy gels, such as Gatorade’s G1, are another option to use before a match or game in order to get the body ready to compete at a high level.

“Energy gels should be used ten to fifteen minutes prior to the event,” Coffer said.

Protein shakes are another option that benefit athletes. When drank after a workout, they help build muscle and aid in weight gain.

There are many types of different of products on the market, each one geared toward a different aspect of an athlete’s workout. Gatorade is useful for refueling during a game. Protein shakes are beneficial for rebuilding muscle after a workout. Energy gels are good to use ten to fifteen minutes before a game to give energy to the body.

Remember, moderation is the key to using any energy products.

hey walk through the front doors and are surrounded by inspirational phrases and large glass windows. These new Bull Dogs are welcomed by brand new teachers and curious new students.

“Wow! There are a lot of people,” junior Lauren Owens said.

Owens came to North on the Monday after the International School of Columbus (ISC) closed Nov. 1.

“It was terrifying. I got lost three times,” Owens said.

Not only did this create stress for the new students, but for the counseling center as well. An unanticipated number of enrollments flooded the office at the quarter break.

“It was busy, and busy is OK, but it went smoothly and I think we accommodated the kids quite well,” counseling director Patrick Pemberton said.

When new students transfer, the counseling center’s responsibilities include completing statemandated forms and arranging meetings with the counselors so as to make the transition to a new learning environment as smooth and efficient as possible.

“Our number one goal when students come here, transfer, is we want to get them in class,” Mr. Pemberton said.

In addition, the counseling center provides tours and gives helpful information to the students.

“We always give them a handbook, and the handbook is very valuable to the student,” Mr.

Pemberton said. “And we give them a map, too.”

The counseling center also tries to match students’ courses at their previous schools to North classes, but the transition between the International Baccalaureate (IB) and the Core 40 curricula has not been without speed bumps.

“It is different entirely. We had a whole program, the IB program. All our classes were 2 years. We had to switch from philosophy to world history and from theatre to Humanities,” Owens said.

While new classes cannot be started midsemester, electives are a popular choice for year-long plans. Mr. Pemberton detailed the most frequently mentioned options.

“We have a lot of options for kids here. I mean really, more than a lot of schools. They get kind of excited. So I’d say the C4, some of our other electives like in art and ceramics. We have more foreign language available to kids, so they’re kind of excited,” Mr. Pemberton said.

Classes like Humanities are especially intriguing to new students, including sophomore Laurin Brunson, who is returning to North after switching to the International School last year.

“My favorite part is the movies,” Brunson said.

Seniors have the additional responsibility of completing the senior project. While this can be challenging for all students, let alone for those with less time to complete it, new students can be accommodated on a case-by-case basis, according to senior project coordinator Lisa Cooley.

“My favorite part are the classes (here) that are not at ISC (International School of Columbus).” sophomore Neydi Torres “If they are seniors, it depends on the English teacher. If the class has already written the paper, we try to apply a research paper that the student has already written. Sometimes it is applicable, sometimes not,” Mrs. Cooley said. “We try to get new transfer students into the senior project class.”

Helping the new students adjust takes a multifaceted and welcoming approach.

“We accommodate them by getting them up to speed, and giving them extra help,” Mrs. Cooley said.

Students here play a crucial role in welcoming their new classmates, too, according to Mr. Pemberton. “[For] someone who is brand new to Columbus, after the tour, we send out information to the teachers,” and the teachers can try to match them up with someone in class that would take them and say, ‘Hey, I have a new student. Can you take them to lunch or show her where this is?’ That way they have some familiarity with at least one student in class.

And then from there it builds. Hopefully, it builds.”

alking in the halls, we have a few expressive artists. They show simple ways to make ordinary objects extraordinary.

Senior Kamal Maharjan makes his own unique bleached t-shirts. He got started when his cousin shared the hobby with him. He starts by cutting out a wax paper stencil of anything he wants then bleaches the shirt. The shirt he is the proudest of is his bleached triangle shirt.

Since then Maharjan has taught his mom.

Meena Maharjan made some of the t-shirts to sell at her company function, raising money for a nursing home. He also taught his friend senior Sarah Von Hoene.

“He was wearing one of the shirts he made and I asked him how he made them and for awhile he just didn’t tell me and then over the summer he showed me how to make them and everything” Von Hoene said. “I started making them a lot and people starting asking me how I made them.

he went to France last summer for the Indiana University Honors Program he left two of the shirts with his host family to remember him.

When making your own shirt Maharjan’s advice is “The internet is your best friend.” He said that so many resources can be found for DIY crafts.

Just like Maharjan junior Makenzie Gilliam (above, left) decorated her own Fourth of July shorts. She went and bought paint lace with junior Taylor Kuhfahl.

“Taylor and I decided to make them because we had old blue jeans that we didn’t need anymore,” Gilliam said.

She started by cutting the blue jeans into shorts.

Then she painted American flags on them and glued lace onto them. Finally, Gilliam made the pockets into bows.

“I plan to make headbands,” Gilliam said. “We’re going to buy the supplies at Hobby Lobby.”

“I didn’t want to take ceramics. In this class, you can wear what you make.”

P

hase Two of the massive Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) franchise was started off successfully by “Iron Man 3,” despite lots of controversy. Fortunately, as the second installation in the franchise since 2012’s “The Avengers,” “Thor: The Dark World” ought to rekindle any shaken faith in Marvel’s movie mega-series. The sequel to 2009’s Thor is firstly an entertaining adventure movie by itself, and an even more importantly a mind-blowing piece to the puzzle that is the MCU franchise.

We last saw our favorite hammer-wielding Asgardian (role reprised for the third time by Chris Hemsworth) in last year’s “The Avengers.”

He imprisioned antagonist Loki in Asgaurd, but since then he has traveled the nine realms of the universe seeking to restore order to the societies thrown into chaos in the wake of Loki’s conquest.

Meanwhile on Earth, Thor’s scientist lover Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) has been a mess since she last saw her magical macho man in the events of “Thor.” Suddenly, physics goes wonky and Jane gets infected with some evil magic that she stumbles upon, then before we know it, Thor shows up on Earth and takes Jane away to Asgard to have her treated. Odin, king of Asgard and Thor’s father, tells them that she has the Aether inside her, which is an evil force that predates the universe as we know it. He believes that an ancient evil has awakened.

Meanwhile, in some other dreary and dismal corner of the universe, the Dark Elves, an army of wicked warmongers and soldiers who sought to control the universe at one point centuries or millenia ago but were defeated by the Asgardians.

Their leader Malekith, arises, and spreads word that the Dark Elves must take back the universe and put it into eternal darkness, and they prepare

to set off for Asgard to retrieve the Aether.

Thus begins the overall plot to the film. Of course, back by popular demand, Loki, Thor’s evil brother (played masterfully once again by Tom Hiddleston), must be broken out of prison to aid Thor in bringing down this ultimate evil.

Marvel hired Alan Taylor, known for his work on many popular TV shows, including “Mad Men” and “Game of Thrones,” to do the directing work on the Thor sequel. Taylor helped hugely in creating a world that viewers could believe is really out there somewhere. In the first “Thor,” the god of thunder’s home world Asgard looked pretty but seemed kind of simplistic, surreal, and un-detailed. In this film, we get a glimpse at the lives of Asgardians, and a closer look at the inner workings of their city.

From the gatekeeper Heimdall’s lookout, to the taverns where warriors celebrate after a victory, to the combat training areas, to the homes of Asgardian royalty, Asgard feels alive and exciting.

It’s simply gorgeous to look at as well, even when it’s being torn apart by evil spaceships.

“The Dark World”’s main directing flaw is in its pacing. Early in the movie, it seems that things move too fast. Key events, introductions of characters, and important discussions feel rushed and hop straight from one to the next, such that at the end of the film, one might have a hard time caring about the decisions and fates of some characters. The film also suffers from a few too corny textbook plot devices. The climax’s conclusion is also fairly straightforward and recycled.

But “The Dark World” makes up for its jumpy pace with plenty of other charming and fun elements. The action is a lot of fun. It doesn’t have the best-choreographed fight scenes anyone has ever seen, but it has some exciting shots and the

heroes pull off some really cool moves. The CGI is quite good and makes for some beautiful images.

Despite being called “The Dark World,” this film might be the funniest of the franchise so far.

Thor’s and Loki’s comedic brotherly banter is at its finest, and silly moments from minor characters --including an incredible cameo from another Avenger-- make the entire film a ball of fun. At two hours long, the film is of perfect duration, never feeling overlong or too brief.

The best thing about “Thor: The Dark World” is how it fits into the MCU. The movie’s end scene blows the possibilities for further movies wide open. Despite the fact that the Avengers sequel has been announced to feature android tyrant Ultron as the primary villain, those who see “The Dark World” will realize that we already have a huge evil on our hands at the conclusion of this movie. To add to the magnificent plot twist, there is a bonus mid-credits scene (as has become usual for the MCU films) that links the current Avengers films with the upcoming space adventure “Guardians of the Galaxy,” set to release Fall 2014. This scene, along with the final scene of the actual movie mentioned earlier, slams in our faces the fact that Marvel Studios has had their plan together ever since the beginning. They are a thousand steps ahead of their viewers, and after the events of “Thor: The Dark World,” fans now have extraordinary reason to be excited for what Marvel has planned for the next few years.

Despite an awkward pace and a climax that is a tad too conventional, the action-packed, jokefilled, foreshadowing-laden blockbuster “Thor: The Dark World” solidifies itself as yet another captivating entry in the MCU.

TV shows I don’t watch in a nutshell

elevision has entered a new golden age. Current TV shows often rival film in their fan-bases and debatable entertainment value. Now my viewing range is quite limited, give me some good ol’ fashion River Monsters, The Walking Dead, and Breaking Bad and that’s all I need. Yet, I’m quite aware there are other fabulous shows out there that I do not watch. I thought to myself, “Hey, I don’t know a thing about these other shows … what if I pooled all my knowledge of them and tried to give the people of Columbus North a summary of the shows?” Now, there may be a few minor spoilers in this column; you have been warned.

“Doctor Who”: So there is this alien, right. He goes by The Doctor. For whatever reason, he has a British accent and one day he borrows a time machine…then dooms his entire species. He then travels to our dull little planet, gets himself a companion, then dies. Then he comes back played by a different actor … then dies again. This happens another 11 times. Turns out, when time lords (The Doctor’s species) die, they come back in a different, and slightly more British, body. In his adventures, which have now spanned a stunning 50 years, he has fought robots, scarecrows, and giant animated angel statues.

“American Horror Story”: A bunch of scary stuff goes down in a bunch of scary places and a lot of not scary people get scared by really scary people. No, thank you, my mental constitution is weak enough already.

“Game of Thrones”: Stabbing, dragons, getting “familiar” with folks, and Hodor; this is what Game of Thrones is all about. Off in this land of fantasy, there are seven families, and they all pretty much hate each other’s guts. One day the awesome King Ned Stark (no relation to Tony Stark) bites the blade and a family called The Lannisters, who are total jerks, save an awesome dude called Tyrion. Meanwhile you have this crazy white-haired girl who lives across the sea and intends to raise a bunch of dragons to destroy Kings Landing, which is the place that the Lannisters now rule.

There is also, to note, a giant man named Hodor who can only say Hodor … not really crucial to understanding the story but it sounds great.

“Pretty Little Liars”: Young women complaining about their problems.

Well, hope I didn’t offend too many fans with my limited knowledge of the things you love most on this planet.
