TRIANGLE: Why did you volunteer at Pride?

GRACE HUNDLEY: Erin is my best friend so I volunteered in support of her and the amazing event that she hosted. I am 100 percent for making a change in our community so I felt that helping Erin, who seriously did an absolutely amazing job at planning and setting up the whole thing,

would help everything go a bit smoother. I’m so proud of our community for standing up to politicians and speaking their mind.

T: What part of Pride are you the most proud of?

GH: I am definitely most proud of our community for coming and showing support. It doesn’t matter that Columbus is Pence’s hometown. If you believe in something, you stand for it, and Pence doesn’t get to stop that.

T: What did you do specifically while volunteering at Pride?

GH: I helped set up tents, artwork, I set up flags, and put different little things on tables.

I also gave Erin lots of moral support because she definitely needed it.

TAKING PRIDE TRIANGLE: Why did you go to pride?

JENNA HASHAGEN: I went to Pride because I wanted to volunteer and help my friend Erin out and to experience a celebration of the LGBTQ community.

T: Why is it important for society to acknowledge the LGBTQ community?

JH: Because the LGBTQ community encompasses your friends, family and coworkers. Don’t you agree that they all deserve to be able to celebrate who they are and support one another?

T: What events happened at pride?

JH: There was a drag show, lots of vendors, booths from organizations from around the community, three different local high school musicians played and Erin gave a speech.

T: What was your favorite part of pride?

JH: My favorite part of pride was getting to meet so many new and interesting people. Well also probably when it stopped raining and the sun came out; no pun intended!

RISING UP //

mpty hallways came alive third period as students poured out of their classrooms to participate in the walkout Friday morning. The walkout was April 20, 10-10:17 a.m. at the main entrance. Over 200 students gathered by the flagpole to memorialize the 17 students who lost their lives during the Parkland shooting.

Senior Pavithra Venkataraman helped to organize the walkout, as well as was one of the five different speakers who participated in the walkout.

“What we planned for the walkout was just to be a bipartisan remembrance of the students who passed away and students who have passed away throughout the country, not just in Parkland, but overtime due to gun violence,” Venkataraman said. “We just wanted to honor those lives and respect everyone, not just the students but also their family members who have to live without their children, their brothers, their sisters or the other students who had to watch their friends get shot in front of them and then learn that they were never going to see them again. We just wanted to honor everyone who’s had to go through anything difficult like that.”

As students gathered, speakers took their positions, welcoming those just arriving and beginning their speeches.

“We had an opening and then we read the names of the seventeen students and teachers who passed away at the Parkland shooting. We then had a moment of silence to honor their lives,” Venkataraman said. “After that, we encouraged students to sign up to vote because no matter what political party you are a part of, or identify with, or even if you don’t identify with one, it is still important to make your voice heard and that’s all that we, as students, can do right now, is to just make your voice heard.”

Sophomore Tristen Cook was also speaker at the walkout Friday morning all well as a member of the Columbus Chapter of Students Demand Action.

“Students Demand Action is a group that advocates for common sense gun reform and for students to go to protests for what they believe in and other organized events and be apart of the crowd that makes their voice heard,” Cook said. “I think if we speak out loud enough and proud enough for whatever reason we’re passionate about and we really show lawmakers we’re here to show you what we need, it’s their job to listen to us.”

What is Denim Day? The Denim Day campaign has been ongoing for the past nineteen years to promote awareness for Sexual Violence Awareness Month. The campaign started in the 1990s in Italy after the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the justices believed that the victim consented because she was wearing tight jeans. The next day, the women of the Italian Parliament wore jeans to work in support of the victim.

ometimes, the present traps us, and we forget the past, but this year and next year, Columbus North’s past will be resurfacing.

The 150th anniversary of Columbus North High School, once known as Columbus High School, is approaching, and the Bull Dog Alumni Association has its celebrations planned out.

However, before diving into the festivities, the Bull Dog Alumni Association started by choosing a logo for the 150th anniversary.

“We discussed the importance of having a logo, something that the community, not only our school patrons…[will] see…[and] know what we’re talking about….From the logo, we wanted it to specifically identify Columbus North and Columbus High School,” Bull Dog Alumni Association Executive Director Hedy George said.

In an effort to include students in the process of creating a logo, the committee organizing the 150th year celebrations approached art teacher Leslie Weaver to organize a contest.

“We’d like to get students involved, so…[we]

went to Mrs. Weaver and asked her if she could fit into her curriculum some time for a class of students to come up with a logo,” George said.

After reviewing all of the designs, the majority of the committee organizing the celebrations voted for senior Warren Kiel’s design.

“We felt that when you looked at it, you would immediately think of Columbus North the date sticks out. We do have...our tagline, “Celebrating 150 years of excellence,” and this cap kind of puts a finishing touch….That’s why we went with it,” George said.

Kiel offered some insight into his process for creating his winning logo.

“I just did some Internet research, and I saw some emblems and logos that look kind of cool, and I just took inspiration from that, and, of course, the bull dog for North,” Kiel said, “It’s pretty cool. I’ve just learned how to be pretty efficient with Illustrator and Photoshop.”

In addition, his logo won him several prizes.

“I got a brick out on the plaza in front of North, and then I also got two tickets to American Pie,”

Kiel said.

Kiel will have his choice of the engraving on the brick. However, the brick will not be his only lasting impact on North. His logo will be displayed in a variety of places.

“We hope to have posters. I hope to have a few banners made that will hang downtown on Washington Street and then hope to have some moved to our parking lot here, where our lights are. There are some athletic banners hanging closer to the gym complex. I hope to have those out here. We’re working with the Republic and, starting in September through next April for 40 weeks, they’re going to have one page that deals with a specific historical topic about Columbus High School/Columbus North,” George said.

“It’s pretty cool to be able to see what I made around town.”

fter a long day, a relaxing shower, a hard workout, or a good book seems like all you need to unwind after a long day. All of these things would fall under the umbrella of self-care. Many people choose to do things like this in order to de-stress and maintain a sense of mental calm.

Junior Kyra Harris said that these things are incredibly important.

“I think the rise in popularity around self-care and self-love is amazing. It promotes such positive energy despite the negativity circulating on social media,” Harris said. “Every day can seem like a new struggle and I believe that it is difficult to break that mentality, but it’s definitely something many people are striving toward and I think that’s such a great thing.”

In order to properly achieve

self-improvement, one has to identify what they want to improve. According to Psychology Today, self-improvement is the improvement of one’s knowledge, status, or character by one’s own efforts. Harris said that people should strive to better themselves.

“I believe that there’s always room for improvement, and there are different ways to better yourself daily,” Harris said. “It’s definitely important that you make time for yourself and put yourself first sometimes.”

In any stressful, traumatic, or painful event, it is important to have coping mechanisms. These mechanisms help you deal with disappointment and stress. With coping mechanisms, you can better recover from trauma.

Harris said she has a couple different coping strategies.

INDEPTH “Sometimes I like to drive around with my music on to clear my head. Other times I prefer to stay at home and reflect. I also recommend having someone you can confide in,” she said.

“Sometimes the things you’re dealing with are hard to bear alone, and you need someone to act as a crutch in the meantime.”

Every person has a different opinion of what selfcare is, but according to the Guardian, the most important thing is that they work. All over social media, threads are constantly appearing to advocate this or that, but Harris said that they are useful.

“Usually people will tell me how my threads have helped them with things they didn’t even know they needed help with,” she said.

“I know I’ve turned a couple people onto different products I use, and it makes me happy to know I helped them in their journey of self-love and care.”

When dealing with hard times, learning to adapt and recover is extremely important. The characteristic of resilience is something you must learn and practice. Junior Abbey Landini said that feeling good about yourself can help you bounce back.

“When I think of self-love and self-care, I think of confidence in yourself, no matter what anyone says about you. I think you have to be able to shake off what people say and you need to have some strategy in order to get over that,” Landini said. “I think in order to have self-love you have to care about yourself because how can you love yourself if you don’t care about yourself. You have to put work into truly loving yourself, personally I have to take time for myself in order for me to be okay.”

According to mentalhealth.org, poor physical health can go hand in hand with poor mental health. This further explains the relationship between self care and self love. Landini said that you can’t have one without the other.

KNOW YOUR STRESS // With finals around the corner, the Triangle staff delves into the symptoms of stress and how to prevent them.

he beginning of May has arrived and classes are wrapping up.

Many of them have begun reviewing for finals that all students anticipate. By the end of the year, our brains have just about had it with the work loads and early mornings. Everyone is ready for the summer because it means free afternoons without worrying about tests or remembering to do your English reading. Our stress levels slowly rise as teachers pile on the review work and rack our brains for information from the beginning of the year. According to Mayo Clinic research, stress can lead to health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.

So how do should we deal with it? To begin, know what your symptoms of stress are. This way when they occur, you can start dealing with it immediately. Common symptoms of stress include nausea, insomnia, low energy, body aches, and headaches.

Stress affects all aspects of your body, including your emotions.

One article from Coaching Positive Performance says that emotional

symptoms of stress include restlessness, anxiety, impatience, frustration, anger, helplessness, and resentment.

Now that we are aware when our body is under a lot of stress, we can learn some ways to combat these negative emotions. Specific tips for students from LearnPsychology.org are to watch your diet, get enough sleep (even if it means cutting off homework early), and learn what styles and learning techniques work for you. Do you focus more with music in the background or silent settings? Do upbeat songs or classical music motivate you to get your work done better? Find your happy place!

If you’re feeling especially overwhelmed close your eyes, take a deep breath, and bring yourself back to a happy place like your last vacation on the beach or up in the mountains with the clouds and tranquility.

Knowing your body and its warning signs will put you at an advantage over your stress inducers and you will definitely notice a difference not only with your appearance but with your personality, too.

Time for Justice: Cosby Conviction one of America’s greatest comedians and actors, but behind his facade was a sinister character.

Out of the many women he drugged and assaulted, only one, Andrea Constand, stood up against him in court by pressing charges.

Several other women testified against him in court. Those by erica song who testified against Cosby were attacked by the defense, who deemed them liars and untrustworthy sources. The umans are imperfect. Judges are fact that so many women kept silent and that imperfect. But sometimes, justice the ones who spoke up were slandered, brings still manages to be served. Bill Cosby up a major issue with our society today. Many certainly got what he deserved for sexually of those who are raped are afraid to stand assaulting women: a guilty verdict. As I read on about the events of Cosby’s case, I recalled a specific phrase: “Better late than never, but never late is better.” Although it was late, justice was delivered to Cosby in the end. However, we need to look at this news story not only as a victory in the battle against sexual assault and rape, but also as a message that we still need to work hard to make the world a safer place. It can even start with the smallest gestures of support, like participating in Denim Day and the #MeToo movement. Even if you feel behind on showing your support, no worries; better late than never.

Finally, reducing the amount of test by assigning projects or another type of assessment could help students show their mastery of a subject without requiring them to cram the night before and give them more time to work.

Triangle: What college did you commit to for baseball?

Bode: I committed to the University of Louisville. It was a dream school. It is only an hour away from home and I really like the coaches, so it was obvious I wanted to go there.

T: What position do you play?

B: I’ve played catcher since I was eight years old, so I just kind of grew up catching and stuck with it.

T: When did you start playing baseball?

60 TIME: B: I started playing when I was three. I played in a league in Bloomington. It was all sports, and I just liked baseball the best.

T: How often are your practices and games?

POP TIME: B: For high school, we have practice everyday after school for 3 hours. We have games several nights a week.

T: What is your most exciting baseball memory?

POSITION VELOCITYB: The big thing was last year at the All-American game in CATCHER: Fort Myers, Florida. It included the top 40 players from the entire freshman class and I got invited to that, so that was pretty cool.

T: Did your team win or come close to winning?

baseball at Indiana University Triangle: When did you commit?

Parker Maddox: I committed to IU on June 13, 2017.

T: What is the recruitment process like?

M: The recruitment process for me was slow. When IU gave me the offer, I just took it and committed.

T: How does it feel to be a junior and already signed?

M: Technically I’m not signed yet, but knowing that I’m already committed is pretty big, because the kids at baseball that are younger look up to you as a leader. They see all the work I have put in to get to where I am, so they can get there someday as well.

T: How did it make you feel when you received the offer?

M: When IU offered me I felt like that all the work that I have put in so far has paid off, and it was a great feeling. It will definitely be a feeling that I will remember.

T: What makes you want to play baseball in college?

M: I want to play college baseball because it has always been a dream of mine to play at the division one level and then possibly go on after college and play professional baseball.

M: I hope that college baseball will help me work better with adversity and be a better person in life.

hat initially arose as a simple game has quickly taken off as the popularity of the game Fortnite has grown. As of Feb. 2018, Fortnite had a total of more than 45 million players worldwide. Total profits of the game Fortnite have beat both Candy Crush as well as Pokemon Go as players worldwide flock to the game making it one of the biggest games of the year. The game earns

about $100 million a month, though it is free to download and play, only charging for in-game purchases. While playing Fortnite, the player is dropped out of a moving plane (or battle bus) anywhere they choose on a map. The player then has to fight to survive, typically competing against 99 other opponents, as the playing map slowly shrinks, forcing opponents into combat.

Freshman Lucy Beck: I started playing a couple of months ago when my friends showed me it [Fortnite] and wanted me to play with them.

T: How often would you say you spend playing it?

A: I don’t play as often as others, so maybe a couple times a week.

T: What is addicting about Fortnite?

A: It is so addicting because of the competition aspect of it. It’s competing with others to see who can be the best.

Triangle: When did you first start playing Fortnite?

Sophomore Jacob Morgan: I first started playing Fortnite around the start of October.

T: How often would you say you spend playing it?

A: I try to play it every night I can, but some nights I have to work. I’d say 5 days out of the week for around 3-4 hours.

T: What is it about Fortnite that makes you enjoy it?

A: The main objective is trying to be the last person or team standing while having a lot of kills. Trying to achieve both of those things along with playing with friends makes it really enjoyable.

In order to better the chances of survival, the player is expected to harvest building materials to make walls, ramps, and platforms that are beneficial to them while fighting. TRIANGLE: When did you start babysitting?

TITUS: I began babysitting when I was in sixth grade.

TRIANGLE: Why did you decide to start babysitting?

T: I like kids and it makes me happy to be around them.

TRIANGLE: When do you babysit?

T: I usually babysit during the weekend, sometimes during the week.

TRIANGLE: How long do you babysit?

T: I babysit around two to three hours.

TRIANGLE: What do you do when you babysit?

T: I mostly just keep the kids occupied.

Sometimes I feed them or put them down for a nap.

TRIANGLE: Is babysitting worth the money?

T: Yes. I don’t think of babysitting as a job, it’s just something fun for me to do.

TRIANGLE: How much money do you make?

T: I usually get fifty dollars for babysitting a family with four kids. It’s usually three hours.

TRIANGLE: Would you recommend babysitting to others?

T: Yes. It is a good job, you can’t really depend on a steady pay, but if you like kids, babysitting can be really fun.

Sophomore Emma Wettschurack shares her experience of being a babysitter.

TRIANGLE: When did you start babysitting?

WETTSCHURACK: I started to babysit around 7th grade.

T: Why do you babysit?

W: I love kids and I love to play with them.

T: How often do you babysit?

W: I have two to three families that usually ask me to babysit on Friday or Saturday. It’s usually around five hours.

T: How much do you make per hour?

W: I usually make ten dollars per hour.

I think the pay is great, especially for something I enjoy doing.

T: What are the pros and cons of babysitting?

W: The pros are definitely getting to spend time with the kids. Cons would be that the kids might not listen to you all the time.

ll humans share a common life

experience: childhood. During the early developmental years, various experiences and events shape a child’s personality, but adults play a role in proper development. While parents may be the obvious example of adult influence, daycare and preschool teachers can also impact the lives of children. Seniors Jordan Bowman and Maggie Diehn both hope to become preschool teachers and are working towards their Child Development Associate (CDA), a certification that will help them achieve their goal.

“To become certified, you have to have 480 hours outside of school working with kids and 120 hours in [the] class lab-preschool,” Bowman said.

With a grand total of 600 hours needed, what does one do during that time at the preschool?

“You’ll have to feed them, obviously, so we’ll give them snacks and lunch.

You’ll create lessons that you’ll do with the kids to help them, so you’ll do an art activity to help with their creativity.

You’ll do science and math, so you just do a lot of lessons kind of just over the basics, like reading and helping them write,” Diehn said.

While the working hours comprise a

major part of the certification process, the certification has more than just time requirements.

“We have to do a resource collection, which is like nine different lesson plans that we’ve done or that we’re going to do….There’s like seven or six 500-word essays that we write that are related to different topics. One of them is about a relationship with the families and how you strive to have a good relationship, how you’re going to communicate with them. Another one is about how you’re going to support children’s development,” Diehn added.

While Bowman and Diehn are striving to help children with their development, the little ones have helped both of them grow, as well.

“From this experience, I have gained a lot. You learn how to be patient with kids. You are always thinking like a kid.

You learn to be creative,” Bowman said.

Diehn also commented on her educational experiences with children.

“It’s helped me to really solidify the fact that I want to be a teacher, and I’m gaining skills that I didn’t have before. I’ve become more patient, and I’ve learned how to talk to children and discipline them in a way that’s good,” Diehn said.

tepping on stage in front of an audience and having to make up and act out a story on the spot may seem terrifying to most, but for senior Grace Terry and other students in theatre, improvisational acting is a fun and important part of acting.

As her senior project, Terry is producing ‘Thursday Night Live’ shows every Thursday throughout the last weeks of the school year. “‘Thursday Night Live’ is going to be a comedy improvisational show. The actors who participate are members of Thespian Troupe and North Drama,” Terry said.

The idea came from watching another group at North a few years ago doing ‘Thursday Night Live’ shows. Terry promised to bring back improvisational acting after being voted Thespian Troupe President.

“I decided with John Johnson that for my senior project, I could participate in the group, but take it a step further and do all of the Advertisement and Production aspects,” Terry said.

After coming up with her idea, Terry had to find students who were willing to participate and try improvisation.

“The first step of the project took place in November when the Thespians went on a field trip to watch an improv group in Indianapolis,” Terry said. “I planned this trip to scope interest from actors on if they were seriously interested in joining this year.”

Improvisation is new to many students.

It is an unscripted and unplanned form of theatre where the performers have to make everything up in the moment.

“Improv is a very challenging form of acting that all high school actors should be exposed to. With improv, you are acting entirely off of a blank slate,” Terry said.

“You develop trust in your skill and ability and in your cast mates. At first, it can seem absolutely terrifying to act a skit in front of an audience with no script.”

Because it is a new and difficult form of live theatre, Terry and other participants have had to practice during the weekends to get comfortable with improvising on stage.

“We have had rehearsals for several months now to develop and learn the main rules and guidelines to improv,” Terry said.

Practicing improvisation is challenging because it is different every time, but it is necessary to get used to acting without a script.

“Our director gives us a “game” or “exercise” and we have to perform it based off of how we are prompted,” Terry said.

After weeks of meeting with the troupe, Terry hopes to see a big turnout the next couple Thursday nights.

“I hope that a lot of different people get to come and watch our hard work pay off. People should come to our shows for some guaranteed laughs and a literal new show every single night,” Terry said.

“Personally, I believe every person should have some knowledge in performing arts,” Terry said. “For me, being involved with theatre and dance, I’ve learned how to present myself in front of an audience, speaking skills, and confidence skills.”
