Libby Arthur talks about being a Columbus North alumni.

ocial Studies Department Chair, Libby Arthur, tells us about her lifetime connection to North.

“I graduated in 1974 and school spirit was probably a different ball game in those days. There was basketball, there was football, there was swimming, not as many sports or the other sports probably weren’t as popular. Basketball was a real big deal in those days, so everyone went to a basketball game and filled the gym, that kind of thing. It was a lot of fun,” Arthur said.

There has always been a cheer section, but now there is a club-sponsored student section, Chaos, instead of a president.

“There was a cheer block back in those days. I was the President of the cheer block. I look back at that and we all had matching outfits and we had organized cheers,” Arthur said. “I had a typical high

s most students were sitting in their classrooms on May 9, a group of students were at the polls encouraging others to vote and being politically active.

Some of math teacher Dale Nowlin’s students volunteered to work at the polls in Columbus.

“I wanted to support Mr. Nowlin, and I am currently not a citizen so I am unable to vote,” Megan Furber said. “So to compensate for that, I wanted to volunteer at the polls and encourage others to vote if they can.”

Grace Schuette helped Nowlin at the polls “I like what Mr. Nowlin’s campaign is about,” Schuette said. “I’m part of Students Demand Action, and I was asked to help with his campaign.”

When the students saw Nowlin’s campaign, they decided to volunteer at the polls. This was a new experience for some of the volunteers.

“I’ve been involved with the Democrats club at North for the entire school year,” Furber said. “That’s how I found out about the opportunity to volunteer at the polls about a month ago.”

Schuette decided to join the Students Demand Action and around that time of the walk out and then they decided to also volunteer to work at the polls.

“I joined them when it started around the time of the walk out,” Schuette said.

Being involved in politics in high school could get people thinking that they may want to work in politics in their future.

“I want to be a lawyer and then I eventually want to run for judge or some other office,” Schuette said.

As seniors enter college, they dare deciding what the want to major in and possibly minor in.

“I am planning on majoring in Political Science next year and minoring in business possibly,” Furber said.

For the students who want to dive into the world of politics, there are some great opportunities here at school.

“I think it is a really great experience, but not only that, I think that especially in America today, it is very important for students to get involved in politics,” Furber said. “Whether that’s just reading up on candidates for elections and becoming more informed on what’s going on, or going a step further to organize events and campaigns, all are important.”

This also gives students a chance to get involved with the community.

“It’s a great way to get involved in the community and meet people,” Schuette said.

Arthur returned to North and came back to teach after teaching jobs in Valparaiso and Ohio. She has been teaching for 40 years total.

“I have been here 37 [years]. I’ve taught Sociology, U.S. History, and World History here. In (Valparaiso), I taught Psychology and World History. In Ohio, I taught 7th grade Social Studies. I’ve been the department chair for over a decade,” Arthur said. “I like kids. I’d rather hang out with teenagers than adults any day.

Teenagers are fun, they’re interesting, they have a positive mind set, they’re happy. I try to do it [teach] hands on and sitting in conference tables, I think is a big deal.”

Arthur is retiring this year from teaching and her position as the Department Chair.

“I love it [teaching] or I wouldn’t have done it all these years,” Arthur said.

“I’ve been exposed to French since I was three years old and I’ve been studying it for four years,” Goebel said. “I also used to live in Germany which gave me experience of being immersed into a foreign language, so I am probably most excited about that aspect.”

Not only will this move improve her proficiency in French, but it will also provide her with insight into her future career choice as well as provide a strong academic background.

“I plan on being a fashion designer, so Paris life will really give me a view into that world, Goebel said. “Also, the fabric markets there are amazing and the school I will be attending is really good, so academically [the move] will be helpful.”

Though there are downsides of the move, Goebel is looking at it with a positive outlook, as Paris is the fashion capital of the world.

“I am really excited for the culture. I’ve always loved France,” Goebel said. “The food is amazing, the language is beautiful, and the landmarks are unbelievable. I can’t wait to take advantage of all the opportunities to learn everything I can about the culture.”

our thousand and eighty two miles. That is the approximate distance from Paris to Columbus, Ind. This is the distance the junior Sedona Goebel will move from her home this summer, preparing to face a completely different culture as she moves to France.

Goebel’s stepfather, who is a global manufacturing excellence director, was offered a new position in this location. While the move is a long distance, it will not be long term.

“We will be there for three years but I plan on attending IU so I will be back for school,” Goebel said. “I’m sad to be leaving my friends but I am very excited to get to experience Paris for my senior year.”

Though moving has its ups, that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few obstacles on the way.

“I’m not really nervous about anything per say,” Goebel said. “I will be frustrated to not be able to drive and the time difference will make it a little harder to keep in touch.”

However, not all aspects of Goebel’s life will change.

She is planning on attending the American School of Paris, so her classes will remain the same. She will also receive an American High School Diploma.

“The main change in school will be a block schedule with 80 minute classes and 20 minute passing periods,” Goebel said. “Also, the cafeteria is amazing there and I’m very much looking forward to that.”

When students move to a foreign country, a language barrier problem is typical, and can be quite stressful. This is not the case for Goebel though, as she is proficient in French and is experienced in being immersed into a new

NORTH Grant Trinkle Center Field, 2 years TRIANGLE: Was there anything you did before the game to prepare, pre-game rituals?

A: “There was not anything real different, I tried to take it just like another game, but everybody did take it a little more serious.”

T: How did you feel in the beginning of the game?

A: 'I felt pretty good going into the game. But their first batter had a really good bat, so I was a little worried there, but after that I was fine.”

T: What was the team’s overall attitude at the beginning of the game?

A: “Pretty good, we felt pretty confident and tried to treat it like any other game.”

T: If you could what would you have done different during the game?

A: “When I was first at bat I didn’t have a very good bat I just wasn’t focused yet. “

“It can be hard to do band during the summer, but I feel like I’m improving during the practices.”

The Triangle Staff gives advice on how to save money on appearance this summer

f the majority of us totaled up the amount of money we spend on our appearance, I think we would be thoroughly shocked. In 2017, the personal-care industry was projected to reach $265 billion in sales according to the article The Cost of Beauty on experiencelife. com. As the summer approaches, we encourage all of us to be aware of where our money is going. There are far more exciting things to spend money on such as Panic! at the Disco tickets, who are coming to Indy in July, rather than weekly tanning bed subscriptions.

Popular trends such as dieting, tanning, and nail appointments do have rewarding outcomes and are not necessarily bad for you but they can become very costly for your wallet.

Instead of spending money on gym memberships, you can get in shape at home. Squats, partial push-ups, jumping jacks, crunches, and dips will get you the results you want if you stick to a regular schedule. Using milk jugs as weights can also save you a couple dollars.

You’ll be able to stay in shape without spending your savings on expensive equipment and monthly gym memberships. Tanning is simple. Working outdoors in a tank top will

Swimming will get you results even faster. It has been proven that salt water on your skin attracts more sun than fresh water. There is no need to go and spend money on tanning bed sessions to get that glow.

For girls, wearing makeup throughout the summer can get costly. Here’s some tips from myawesomebeauty.com on how to look good without expensive cosmetics. First, use an exfoliator to remove the dead skin layer off your face. This will brighten up your face and give you that summer glow. After exfoliating moisturizing is the next step. Finally, drinking water will be your body’s best friend. It helps with both keeping your body in shape and keeping your skin clear all summer long. WebMD.com recommends drinking about half your weight amount in ounces. For example, if you weigh 140 pounds, the recommended amount is between 70 and 140 ounces.

Overall, there are many ways to get around spending a fortune keeping up your appearance over the summer. Many of these tips can be used during the rest of the year, too.

chool is ending, and as summer approaches, our self-image is changing. The way we view ourselves does not solely depend on what we see in the mirror, but also on the body standards set by society and the social pressures to meet them. During the summer self-image is especially influenced by what is considered to be ‘perfect summer body’, and with summer fast approaching, many students, such as freshman Aliza Baker, feel pressure to meet those standards.

“Society wants us to be thin, tan, beautiful, and have beautiful hair. For the boys usually you have to be muscular, fit and tall,” Baker said.

While there are similar ideals for both males and females during the summer, sophomore Eric Le believes the standards for women are stricter.

“In both genders, there is a perfect ideal for the summer body, but guys don’t speak out about it as much than girls,” Le said. “Guys have a lot less pressure. Most of the pressure for beauty is on females.”

However, senior JP Ford has another opinion on the standards for different genders.

“I don’t think there’s a double standard,” Ford said, “Sure you can go out and look, and there’s de facto standards set for how a woman should look, for how a man should look, and I think that the reactions towards those standards might be different from men and women, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that there’s a double standard.”

No matter one’s gender, the standards for ‘ideal’ summer bodies sometimes magnify flaws and create a sense of insecurity for students. Companies exploit these pressures and insecurities during the summer to make a profit.

“It is what sells,” Baker said. “You can make money by making people feel bad about themselves more than you can when you make them feel good.”

There are countless magazines, articles, and advertisements, especially during the

INDEPTH that target peoples’ lack of self-confidence about their bodies.

“I find in the summer I feel worse about my body because I think ‘I’m not thin, I’m not pretty, I don’t have nice flowing long hair.’ You just compare yourself to other people who flaunt their bodies,” Baker said.

For many people, including freshman Anarelis Mora, getting the perfect body during the summer can seem more like a necessity than a healthy goal.

“Summer pressures people to lose more weight and change the ways the exercise and eat,” Mora said, “Some people don’t change because they want to.

They change because they feel they have to.”

Out of 46 North students surveyed, 39 percent recognized social media as their most common source of pressure to have the ‘ideal’ summer body.

“Summer is when everyone is out and about. You see people posting more pictures,” Baker said. “They want to look good in them because why wouldn’t you want people to see the best version of yourself?”

As summer approaches, peers and models begin posting photos of themselves wearing more revealing clothing. According to pewinternet.org, 60 percent of Snapchat and Instagram users visit the platform on a daily basis, so like most students, sophomore Delaney Donovan is constantly exposed to examples of the ‘perfect body’ online.

“During the summer, you are in more exposing clothes, so it puts more pressure on people to look good,” Donovan said. “A lot of girls get the idea that

they have to have the perfect summer body and get fit because of all the models on social media.”

Because of the widespread images of the ‘ideal’ body type on social platforms, these standards are accepted as normal, compelling viewers to strive for the perfection they see in models.

“If you see a model on social media, you immediately want to look like her. You see her likes and her followers and think everybody loves her,” Baker said. “Of course I would want to be and look like her.”

While social platforms influence self-image, the desire to fit in with peers also leads many people to strive for physical perfection.

“I think people are most influenced by the people they see in school and the interactions they have with other people. When you see an attractive person, you get jealous. That’s probably going to influence more than seeing the Black Widow in ‘Infinity War.’ Obviously, she’s supposed to look like that,” Ford said, “I think people separate that from reality more than they separate themselves from the people they see at school.”

According to ods.od.nih.gov, 15% of Americans use dietary pills to lose weight. Other methods people use to achieve the ‘ideal’ body include exercise and changes in diet.

“I feel pressure from other people because everybody else is fit. I on the other hand am slightly under par than the average,” Le said. “I lift weights and exercise quite often. I do go to the gym, too.”

“I consider the perfect summer body to be whatever is comfortable and healthy for that person.”

Losing weight by working out and dieting isn’t the only way people feel they have to change their physical appearance to get the perfect summer look.

“People spend lots of money to get this ideal look. They go out, get a tan, get their hair done, buy makeup, get their nails done,” Baker said.

The summer body ‘ideal’ not only incites physical changes, but it can also have psychological effect on people.

“A lot of people are not comfortable in their body because of it. That pressure can just lead people to feel bad about themselves and feeling like they can’t change, and that just leaves them feeling hopeless,” Le said.

Negativity towards one’s appearance not only affects one’s mental state; it can alter actions as well. According to sophomore Grayson Moffitt,

the pressure to have the perfect summer body sometimes results in a fear of participating in certain activities that reveal one’s body type.

“I feel like if you don’t have what you think of as the ‘ideal’ body, you’ll decide, ‘Oh, I won’t swim. I won’t run. I won’t play any tennis. I won’t do any of those things that people can see what my body looks like because I’m ashamed of how I look,’” Moffitt said.

While some may feel ashamed of and limited by their appearance, others embrace themselves for their personalities, rather than their looks.

“I can work out and do everything, but I’m still going to be the same person. I’m still the same on the inside,” Baker said. “If I’m still the same person, why would I have to change my appearance to look like someone else?”

PAINFUL PROJECTS // F

or some people the words “group project” cause a sense of dread and stress. For others, they are their favorite words to hear in class. Whether students love or hate them, group projects are part of almost every class and are inevitable in high school.

It is not surprising that many teachers assign at least one group project in their class.

Group work is a great way to learn to work with others. Most careers require working and communicating with other people, so teamwork is a great skill to learn in high school. It also provides the opportunity to meet new people. Working with others allows students to collaborate and think of ideas they wouldn’t have on their own. The more people there are, the less work each person has to do.

However, group projects are not all good.

One big issue with group work is unequal participation. Many of us have had the misfortune of being in a group with people who don’t want to do their share. Even if one person doesn’t contribute to the project, it adds a lot more work to the rest, especially if it is a smaller group. Some students slack off because they think the others will take care of it and they won’t have to put in work.

Often, teachers grade group projects with one cumulative grade. This allows people to get credit without any effort, only putting their name on someone else’s hard work.

People are more likely to put in less effort on a task if they are in a group with other people.

The diffusion of responsibility can make students feel less accountable for the work and lead them to think their effort has very little effect on the overall project. The bigger the group, the less responsible students feel, and the less work is done. When social loafing occurs, often only one or two students are left to do all the work. Suddenly, a group project with a reasonable amount of work per student becomes an overwhelming and stressful last minute assignment.

Tension can arise between students who are left with all the work and those who

procrastinate. There can also be conflict when a student tries to take control of a project and doesn’t let the others participate or share their opinions. Controlling team members can take advantage of group projects to take charge of others without letting them add input. Conflicting ideas can damage the overall quality of the project. When there are multiple students working on the same thing, it can be harder and take more time to make decisions. Everyone has different opinions on how the work should be done. A small and usually easy decision can turn into a long process when each member has to be consulted and taken into account, especially if no one agrees. Communication can also be strained when talking in a group with strangers or people you don’t know very well.

Another problem with group projects is conflicting schedules. While many teachers give time to work during class, most projects require students to work outside of class.

In most cases, students have different classes and resources that may not match with the other team members. This makes working outside of class very difficult. Delegating team members to take home a project everyday and assigning tasks to everyone is another added challenge. Making sure everyone has an equal amount of work to do and including all team members in the project can prove challenging for some groups.

Trust is essential when you are working with other people.

Students have to be able to trust the people they are working with and know that everyone will do their part. Some people don’t want to entrust others they don’t know really well with part of the project and part of the overall group grade they will get. These feelings can make the whole project a negative experience.

In the end, group assignments have more problems than benefits. Instead of teaching teamwork and diffusion of responsibility, they create frustration and put all the stress and pressure on one or two students. They don’t help students learn how to work with other team members but help them learn how to effectively get out of doing the work and still get credit. In most cases, students either take advantage of the work, or slack off, meaning the others end up doing everything themselves, and arguments break out about how to do the project. Of course, students will have to face hardships and conflicts with coworkers in the future, but group projects don’t teach them to work through the issues, only to hate the project itself.

WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST ABOUT TEACHING?

WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST ABOUT TEACHING?

I will miss the students most of all. It has been a privilege to work with kids. I enjoy collaborating with them. I love the questions, and the laughter, and I have appreciated they way they push me to learn and grow. I have learned so much from them. I will also miss working with such caring teachers.

I will miss my students the most. Over the 40 years that I have been in education I have enjoyed getting to know and work with students from all walks of life. The students we have here at CNHS are truly awesome; funny, kind, good natured,interesting, helpful to one another, smart and hard working. I see the Bull Dog Way take place every day as students interact with one another. I will also miss my teachers in the Social Studies Department who I have worked with side by side for many years. I hope they feel a little more confident in executing UDL and PBIS in their classrooms because of our department work. I also consider myself a life long learner. I will miss working, eating lunch and socializing with teachers from all departments because they teach me something almost every day.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY FROM YOUR TIME AT NORTH? I don’t have one specific memory, but I have always loved large scale labs and project days.

The boat project, the Rube Goldberg energy style projects and the wiring project bring physics to life. Many of the labs we do are inquiry based and fun.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STUDY TEACHING IN COLLEGE? My childhood was less than ideal, but I was lucky enough to have teachers and other adults who cared about me and helped me when I needed assistance. I was lucky enough to have people who saw my potential and believed I was capable of growth instead of seeing my existing limitations. I decided to get an Electrical Engineering degree as I thought it was the best degree I could earn that would guarantee I could support myself and be financially independent.

After working as an engineer for 5 years I really felt like I wanted to do something more socially oriented that would ‘give back’. I wanted to work with kids. I went back to school in 1995 to get a license to teach. I have taught at North for 21 years and I have loved being here. It is now time for me to slow down a bit. I love working with students, and I love teaching physics. While I believe I am doing the right thing by retiring, I have mixed emotions about it as I know that this will probably be the most meaningful job I will ever have.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY FROM YOUR TIME AT NORTH? I am a people watcher at heart and I love to observe students interact in the hallway.

Students are so clever and funny and almost every day I see some random act of kindness where one student reaches out to another to offer a hug, a handshake, a kind word or a helping hand. Keep up the good work Bull Dogs!

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STUDY TEACHING IN COLLEGE? I have always worked with kids in some fashion beginning in 9th grade when I was a playground supervisor for the Columbus Park and Recreation Dept assigned to Mead Village playground. Kids just make me smile. Actually they crack me up almost all of the time. Going into education and leadership was just a natural fit for me.I have a Bachelor’s degree in Social Studies Education and Psychology from Purdue University. Go Boilers! I have a Masters degree in Social Studies Education from Indiana University but don’t tell Andy Dunn!

As seniors are moving on to the next stage of life in college, so are some teachers as they retire at the end of the school year.

How to recycle high school clutter

ny student knows how easily old assigments pile up in a backpack over the school year. For many students, the end of the year marks a time to sort through school supplies, team tshirts, prom wear, and academic memorbilia. To reduce waste, consider whether the item can be reused, recycled, upcycled, or donated. Spend spare time in class sorting through old papers and assignments, and recycle them at school, or at your nearest recycling recepticle. An old backpack could be reused as a storage bag, or a used prom dress can be loaned to a friend or relative.

Even items like old electronics can be recycled at the Columbus Recycling Center. Consider donating old clothes or backpacks to places like Goodwill or Sans Souci. Perhaps old tickets, programs and pins could become room decor for a dorm. Don’t forget to organize your digital files as well- sort through google drive and pictures on your phone. Follow these steps for a successful summer declutter.

For real learning to occur you have to have a relationship that is open and honest and accepting of mistakes.
