On a cool, dark Saturday night, everything is still and quiet. Out of the corner of his eye, Ross can see the deer making its way through the clear meadow. He waits patiently as he slowly and calmly starts pointing his gun at it. This is it. The moment he has been waiting for all day. BANG! Ross loves to hunt for deer. “I was seven when I shot my first deer,” Ross said. Ross likes hunting with his dad and friends, but mostly goes by himself. “I enjoy deer hunting and it’s fun because it’s a big thing in my family,” Ross said. Bow hunting starts Oct. 1 and ends Jan. 3. Ross likes to take advantage of the time he has to hunt. “I like to go hunting as often as I can when it’s in season,” Ross said. “You just have to be patient.” Ross sees hunting as a chance to relax with his friends. All of the sounds and sights of the woods add to his experience. “[My favorite part is] just the weather and time with everyone I hunt with,” Ross said. These are things that make Ross want to be out hunting for deer all the time.

Derek Baker produces his own movies

Not looking to be the next Steven Spielberg, senior Derek Baker creates his own movies for fun. The movie creating began his sophomore year when Baker, along with his friends, seniors Seth Vincent, Kable Walton and Jake Heyerdahl, got an idea for a class project. “We were in Spanish II and we had to make a Spanish video,” Baker said. “We had a lot of fun doing it and did a really good job, so we have tried to out-do ourselves ever since.” Baker and Vincent continue to make movies spreading across different genres. “We have done a murder mystery, a news team and a cooking show,” Baker said. “By myself, I’ve done an animated one for anatomy.” Baker also said that sometimes he includes special effects such as fire, explosions, gun shots and lightning. These movies take quite a while to create and perfect. “Normally it takes a couple of weekends: two or three days to write, two or three more days to film and a day to edit,” Baker said. Using the program iMovie to edit and places like Parkside Elementary to film and produce his movies, Baker reflects on his future in movie making. “I probably won’t follow it (movie-making) in college,” Baker said. “I really want to be a plastic surgeon.” To show others his hard work, Baker teamed up with Vincent once more to put their productions into the cyber world. “We have them all on YouTube,” Baker said. “Our channel name is Vincent Baker Film. We also have a Facebook and Twitter account.” Baker continues creating movies because of what it does for him and how it makes him feel. “I have a lot of fun doing it and coming up with an idea,” Baker said. “And creating something from what I see inside my head.”

With an ocean between her and her previous home, junior Mia Salvaggio travelled from Daventry, England to Columbus, Ind. with plenty of optimism and excitement. Salvaggio had to move because her dad became employed at Cummins located here in Columbus. The city of Daventry is located about an hour outside of London and is slightly different than Columbus. “I knew a lot more people. Everybody knew everybody,” Salvaggio said. “The weather here is a lot more nice.” Salvaggio often walked to wherever she had to go . “Everything was close and easy to get to,” Salvaggio said. Salvaggio was excited to move to a new place. “I really wanted to come. I was excited, but fear of the unknown made it scary,” Salvaggio said. Moving to a new school was one transition Salvaggio had to make. “I hated it and cried at first, but it gets betters as weeks go on,” Salvaggio said. “People speak to me which is cool.” Salvaggio did have some worries about moving. “In American films, you see a lot of cliques. I was afraid of the cliques and just being different,” Salvaggio said. “I also dress differently.” Certain people have helped Salvaggio adjust and transition to Columbus North. “Silje Neelson, because she is new as well. Robert Young helped me a lot too,” Salvaggio siad. Salvaggio has gotten to do new things with this move. “I went canoeing for the first time in Edinburgh which was interesting,” Salvaggio said. Moving has had positives for Salvaggio. “My family and I have become a lot closer,” Salvaggio said. “We have all depended on each other.” by Alex Kimbrell

Working definitely affects my social life because I can’t always go hang out with friends whenever I want to, but the good thing about my job is that a lot of my friends work with me, so that makes it a lot better and actually makes me want to go to work.”

After four years of growing his hair long and strong, senior B.J. Ozaeta chopped it all off and donated it to Locks of Love. “I’ve always liked long hair, I’ve never been a short hair kind of guy, so I decided to grow it out and let it fall where it may,” Ozaeta said. The comments and looks in the hallway never phased him, he thoroughly enjoyed what people thought about him and his hair. “It really showed my personality,” Ozaeta said. “I mean, what guy has long locks anymore?” When he decided to make a good change by shortening his hair, his job also having a say in the decision, it was a huge weight off his shoulders. “I cut it about a month and a half ago and it’s really short now,” Ozaeta said. “I can’t tell if I like it or not. I guess it doesn’t really matter now though, but I am definitely growing it out again, but probably not as long as before. That was a lot.”

Chelsea Waxler has always had a knack for music Inspired by her dad at a young age, Junior Chelsea Waxler has always known she has wanted to be involved in music. “I used to sit downstairs while he played [the drum set] and then attempt to do what he did,” Waxler said. “He eventually started teaching me in first grade and I’ve been a drummer ever since.” Waxler has been involved with band since she was in fourth grade. She is part of percussion, which varies from mallet instruments like marimbas, to snare and bass drum. Her favorite instruments to play are the snare and the timpani. “Snare music is really fast and complex, while timpani adds a lot of depth to any song,” Waxler said. Band has always kept her busy and she doesn’t have much time for other activities. On top of marching band

practice until 9:00 p.m., she is involved in Key Club and she has to deal with homework from her AP classes. She didn’t have a weekend off for four months with marching band in the fall, and concert band during the winter. Even though it’s tough, she still loves it. “I wouldn’t trade the time I spent on band for anything else,” Waxler said. “It’s such an amazing feeling to see the show at the end of the season, and I feel accomplished with the work we put into it.” Her favorite part of being in band is performing in competitions. “The adrenaline kicks in and everyone focuses on what you have to do,” Waxler said. “For eight minutes you have to be on your ‘A-game’ or you let everyone down.” Not only do Waxler and her dad play music, but Waxler has a family history in music. “Between all of my family members we play piano, mandolin, acoustic/electric guitar, drums, bass, trombone, flute, violin, trumpet, saxophone, and most

of us can sing as well.” Waxler said. Before Waxler lived in Columbus, she lived in Ill. where she was involved in singing. She participated in the choir, and performed in plays where she had solos in three of them. However, when she moved to Columbus, she chose band over choir. “I was way too scared to try out for choir when I moved here and have been ever since,” Waxler said. Waxler does not plan on doing marching band in college, but she hopes to be involved in music forever. She still wants to learn how to play the piano and guitar. Her favorite part of music is the ability to lose herself in a song. “During a concert or performance, you forget the crowd and just get the flow with everyone else and try to get the emotion of the music across to the audience,” Waxler said. “Whether it be an auditorium full or Lucas Oil Stadium.” compiled by Erin Jones Junior Chelsea Waxler takes time out of her lunch period to show off her percussion skills. Vanderkolk broke down her character into three words: “Bubbly,” Vanderkolk said. “I get that a lot. Sincere. I can’t really think bad about anybody, so I always find the good in them. I never try to be fake. Quirky. I always scrunch up my nose when I smile. Sometimes I’ll just randomly wiggle my nose without [knowing] it. I look like a bunny. Yeah, I’ve been told that too.” Vanderkolk realizes the effect that looking at the world in the best light can have. “I don’t like to think about the bad things because it just kind of brings you down,” Vanderkolk said. “I try to look at things with the most positive attitude so I can make the most of everything.”

Vanderkolk highly values her friends, many of whom participate in extracurriculars alongside her. “I get really comfortable around people easily,” Vanderkolk said. “If they’re a quiet, non-social person it’s harder because I feel like they’re judging me. When someone is outgoing, it feels like they’re showing their true self, so that makes me feel like it’s okay to show mine.” Vanderkolk tries to look at everyone in the best light. “When I go to school and I see people that are acting funny or [getting] on your nerves, I always try to think about what they’ve been through,” Vanderkolk said. “They’re struggling internally to find themselves. It’s really not their fault.” One of Vanderkolk’s friends, sophomore Aly Bowman, participates in choir with her and sees her optimism every day. “Sara always has a positive attitude,” Bowman said. “She is a very put-together person who always tries to make new friends. She is very good at putting others first and helping them, even if it is inconvenient.” Vanderkolk knows the importance of surrounding yourself with supportive friends. “Who you’re around in high school determines what you do,” Vanderkolk said.

Inside and outside of school hours, Vanderkolk stays busy with sports, music and leadership. In the fall, Vanderkolk plays soccer. “I really like [soccer] because it really brings people together to meet one goal,” Vanderkolk said. “We put aside our differences for one goal, for the bigger picture.” Soccer season is followed up by tennis season in the spring. “[Tennis] is such an individual sport,” Vanderkolk said. “You can see your individual progress, which is really neat. Since there are so few of us, we get close.” Besides sports, Vanderkolk also participates in choir. North Stars show choir has provided Vanderkolk with an outlet for her previous choir experiences in elementary and middle school. “I like learning the new dance moves,” Vanderkolk said. “It’s fun to go and compete because it feels like you’re accomplishing something.” Of her activities, Vanderkolk most enjoys spending time with student assembly. “[Student assembly] gives you an opportunity to get connected with a lot of people,” Vanderkolk said. “It helps with networking. I like to try and make people feel accepted. You get to do a lot of fun things that also benefit other people.”

Family When not with friends or at one of her many activities, Vanderkolk enjoys spending time with her parents and two sisters, Julia and senior Jacqueline Vanderkolk. “My favorite thing to do outside of school is to be with my family,” Vanderkolk said. “They’re funny and I don’t get to spend a lot of time with them.” Vanderkolk enjoys her family’s annual Christmas tradition. “Every year, we go and chop down a Christmas tree,” Vanderkolk said. “We all go and take down the tree and take it home and decorate it. It’s just a really fun, happy time.”

Vanderkolk is inspired by surfer Bethany Hamilton, who continued surfing even after having one of her arms bitten off by a shark. Vanderkolk first read about her in a book. “When I saw the movie, she worked so hard to go after her dream,” Vanderkolk said. “I mean, she got her arm bitten off by a shark. I would never have the guts to go back in the ocean. That was really inspiring.” Vanderkolk’s role model closer to home is her first grade teacher, Mrs. Meri Knight. “Mrs. Knight was always really sweet, happy and outgoing, no matter how unruly [my classmates and I] would be,” Vanderkolk said. Mrs. Knight has seen Vanderkolk’s sunny personality grow from first grade to today. “The gentle heart which Sara has is more evident than ever,” Mrs. Knight said. “She volunteered in my room one day last year and my first graders immediately fell head over heels in love with her. She instinctively knew just how to work with them and motivate them. It was so exhilarating to watch.” Vanderkolk dreams of also becoming a teacher in the future. “I really want to be a teacher because they touch so many people’s lives,” Vanderkolk said. “I want to help as many people as I can. I’d probably want to be a first or second grade teacher.”

Seniors Leah and John Basile are brother and sister. Read about their holiday preferences, some alike, some different.

What is your New Year's resolution?

For a year they lived just down the street from each other, but never actually talked to each other until their freshman year of high school in their geometry class. Now closer than ever, juniors Sloane Kirsch and Chris Diehn reflect on what makes them such good friends. “The thing I love about Chris, is that whenever I’m around him, I can’t be in a bad mood,” Kirsch said. “My problems aren’t really my problems and he reminds me of that.” Diehn also shows what makes Kirsch a good friend. “Sloane’s the person I can laugh the most with, she’s like the number one person I can be sarcastic and witty with,” Diehn said. Kirsch remembers her first thoughts of Diehn. “As soon as I met him, I admired his wit from afar at first, then had to just jump in there,” Kirsch said. “We started talking and I thought he was hilarious.” The two notice the difference when one of them is gone. “Not too long ago Sloane was gone from class and it’s usually like joke, joke, joke and when she wasn’t there it was more of me like sitting there quietly,” Diehn said. “There was no one else in the room where I’m confident in them not getting annoyed with me, so it was just like jokes building up in my head.”

Peppermint

cookie recipe

Ingredients:

2-cups sifted flour 1-teas baking soda 1/2-teas salt 1-cup soften margarine 1-cup packed brown sugar 1-egg 2-cups quick oats 1/2 cup crushed peppermint candy

Glaze: 2-1/2-cup sifted confectioners’ sugar 6-T milk 6-T crushed peppermint candy

Vince’s FAVORITE things

Favorite pet: ”I love my cat Guido.”

Preparation: 1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees 2. Sift together flour, baking soda, and salt in to a medium bowl. 3. Put margarine and brown sugar in a separate bowl. Beat together until you achieve a fluffy texture. Beat in the egg. Add the flour mixture from the other bowl and mix. Now, add the oats and peppermint; mix. 4. Place spoonfuls of the dough on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 8 minutes, and remove from oven. Let it cool for 1 minute and then take the cookies from the cookie sheet and let cool for another 15 minutes. 5. Now for the glaze, combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and mix well. Let the glaze cool completely before drizzling on the cookies. compiled by Lauren Tucker

It’s Coldplay, what’s not to like?” Favorite food- “Filet mignon because it just melts in your mouth.”

who is BENJAMIN MILLER?

This senior separates himself from the crowd

hen asked to describe himself using one word, senior Benjamin Miller chose the word “different.” “I like being different,” Miller said. “It defines me. I don’t always like what I see in the world, so it makes me feel like I am separate in a way.” Miller enjoys Live Action Role Play and soft combat. “I used to be in charge of a group when I lived in Spain,” Miller said. “Basically, you have fake weapons that we usually make ourselves. They are usually duels in soft combat. In LARP, there’s a story and everyone plays their part.” Miller moved back from Spain last year, bringing with him a leather book that he collects signatures in. “It was meant to be so I could remember people because I’ve been a lot of places and had a lot of friends,” Miller said. “I had them write so I could remember in the future.” So far, Miller’s parents, brother and closest friends have signed the book. However, Miller has not yet looked at what they wrote. “It used to be that I was going to read it once every year after my birthday, but then I changed my mind,” Miller said. The leather book of signatures is valuable to Miller and he makes sure to take it when he travels. “It’s usually the first thing I think to take because I might meet someone,” Miller said. “I had it in Spain, I brought it with

me to California, then to here, from here back to Spain, Spain back to here and I went to D.C. with it.” While he was able to bring his book here from Spain, Miller had to leave his best friend, Xavier Martín Solà. The two friends still talk almost every day using Skype. “Ben is quite different from other people, because he’s a person who tries every moment not to lie and looks for what is good, without stopping to think about the work that can take,” Solà said. Supporting Solà is important to Miller. Even though he cannot be with him in Spain, Miller strives to be a good friend. “I hope to leave other people’s lives having had a good impact,” Miller said. “I don’t necessarily want to be remembered. I just want to do something.” Three braids in Miller’s hair set him apart. He decided to get the braids last year when he came back from Spain. “I decided I wanted to be different because I’ve always been different,” Miller said. Miller’s braids serve as a reminder of how he wants to defy conformity. “They ask me all the time why I have these braids in my hair,” Miller said. “I don’t do it for style, because it’s obviously not popular. I do it as a symbol to remind me of who I want to be, so that every time they snicker, laugh, or are just curious, I am reminded of who I want to be.” by Sarah Whaley
