Live 2 Serve

-- Service is Sweet

Aloha, friends!

It’s a GREAT day to be a Kiwanian! A great day to share our stories and our passion for service. A great day to welcome new members into the Kiwanis Family. A great day to make a difference in our world – one child and one community at a time.

In a few months, our Key Club and KIWIN’S members will be holding their District Conventions. If you haven’t had the opportunity to attend one of these events in the past, make this your year! It will serve to remind you of why we do what we do. The energy. The spirit. The dedication. It’s truly a remarkable experience. Don’t forget – if you’re in California, get your Live Scan ASAP.

It's convention and conference season! Currently we are between Mid-Year North (held in Visalia on February 3rd) and Mid-Year South (coming up in Riverside on March 23rd). If you haven’t registered yet, today’s the day! There will be seminars on membership, mental health and more, as well as opportunities for fellowship with other Kiwanians. An added bonus: Circle K will be holding their District Convention simultaneously that weekend. What a great opportunity to learn more about how we ALL can help support the student leaders in this valuable program. While in Riverside, please take advantage of the membership seminars offered. Simply put, there needs to be more of US to support our communities. There are many holes in our district. Holes where Kiwanis was once thriving and could flourish once again. Holes where people have never heard of Kiwanis. That has to change. We need to strive to do better. To BE better. Our neighbors depend on that.

KIWANIS California-Nevada-Hawaii District -- Winter Edition -- 2023 - 2024

Before we know it, July will be here and we’ll be heading to Denver for International Convention. One of the most important issues we’ll be facing is a Dues Increase, and in order for Kiwanis to continue to serve its members in the manner in which they deserve, it must pass. It’s way overdue. I had the opportunity to stay in our District hotel in January and you are going to LOVE it. Registration is open now! AND… in August… I hope you ALL will be joining me in Kona for our District Convention! I already have my grass skirt. More information will be coming in the months ahead but start saving NOW. It will truly be a magical experience. Till next time, my friends!

Director’s Point of View

We just completed a very successful Mid-Year North Education Conference. We had presenters from Kiwanis International on Membership as well as the New FREE website at Kiwanis International. Bryce Kinder was very helpful in answering questions and sharing information on “How to” get started and keep the site up to date. He will return for the members in the Mid-Year South on Saturday, March 23, 2024. The comments I received from members from way up north is Visalia is not North. Nonetheless, the event was well attended by more members than in most past Mid-Year North presentations. I have asked the members who want other changes to let me know of a hotel that can host 400 to 500 in a Ballroom plus 5 seminar rooms. I would be happy to check them out. We are now on our way to Mid-Year South which will be held at the Riverside Convention Center. We will be meeting jointly at the same location and time as the Circle K District Convention. Updates in the live scan background checks, the new Kiwanis membership programs like the 2 for 2 program, the new Kiwanis website, and the Governor's special program on mental health are all on the table for your Education. Saturday night will be the Gala celebrating the Service of Ohana, Dinner and Auction in support of our District Children’s Fund. I look forward to getting acquainted with all of you in Riverside!

Rose Float 2024 Photos Submitted by Dave Constantine, Tony Molino and Alan Zusman

On January 1, 2024 the Rose Parade stepped off in the usual fashion showcasing bands from around the world, music entertainment, equestrian units, along with floats of all sizes and floral decor.

The Kiwanis Rose Float was a shining example of the beautiful harmony we as members achieve. Hundreds and hundreds of hours are put into the making of each float in the parade.

In addition to the construction crew, many volunteers show up to help in the decorating of the floats from painting to gluing to prepping the flowers to actually placing the flowers and seeds before the float is headed to the parade route. Amongst the volunteers, Kiwanis Key Club, KIWIN’S and Circle K members come out in droves to be part of this exciting venture. Our volunteers over, over 4,000 members cometogether spending over 50,000 hours decorating up to 10 floats each year -- and this year was no exception. On the following pages you will see the making of the floats, decorating process and the final versions. And congrats, the Kiwanis Rose Float 2024 won the Tournament Volunteer Trophy.

“The Objects of Kiwanis” To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life. To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships. To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business and professional standards. To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship. To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build better communities. To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and goodwill. KiwanisLand Car Show Celebrated its 5th Annual Spectacle of Classic Automobiles Submitted by Alan Zusman

A Community Tradition Revs up on the third Sunday of September 2024

In celebration of classic cars, community spirit, and fundraising for park beautification, Kiwanis Club of Greater Garden Grove members collaborated on a unique fundraiser that combines the love for classic automobiles while showcasing the beauty of KiwanisLand Park. Typically boasting an impressive display of 120 classic cars, the KiwanisLand Car Show has become a staple for car enthusiasts in the local community. The event has welcomed some unique and exciting guests. Members of the Garden Grove Police Department's SWAT team have attended, showcasing community support and collaboration. Star Wars characters from the 501 First Legion, a non-profit organization, have also appeared, adding galactic excitement to the car show. Beyond the visual feast of classic cars, the KiwanisLand Car Show is a hub of activity offering an array of food and beverages for sale along with a huge raffle/auction, contributing to the fundraising efforts. What sets this car show apart is the active participation of Kiwanis members who showcase their classic cars, adding a personal touch to the event. Over the past five years, this gathering of automotive enthusiasts has successfully raised over $25,000. These funds are crucial in supporting the maintenance and development of KiwanisLand Park, a picturesque three-acre green space that serves as a community hub. Kiwanis Children’s Fund causes are health and nutrition, education and literacy, and youth leadership development. Together, these causes form a continuum of impact — helping young people develop throughout childhood and into adulthood. Each cause also supports the others, ultimately creating a generation of leaders who also contribute to that continuum.

Children’s Fund grant programs include the club grant, microgrant, district grant and the pediatric medicine support grant. The pediatric medicine support grant is a one-time grant of up to $14,000 for a project that benefits a club’s local children’s hospital or facility that provides pediatric care. The Children’s Fund is proud to announce the creation of the Kickstarter Grant program! Kiwanis clubs that charter with 40 or more active members will be invited to apply for a kickstarter grant of up to $1,000 six months after their charter date to kickstart service initiatives and begin creating the club’s signature project. Honoring his work and his vision, the Fellowships are awarded to donors who make a gift of $2,500 to the Kiwanis Children’s Fund, recognizing Kiwanians’ generosity while remembering his passion for childhood development. We had three recipients of the Dr. Wil Blechman Fellowship at our district convention in 2022 and we have recognized additional recipients in 2023!

Children’s Fund President’s Goal Kiwanis Children’s Fund President wants to accomplish bringing the threads of the Kiwanis

family together like a braid so we can make an even bigger impact. Together we can help clubs achieve more than they can independently. Want to help? By funding projects that target the Kiwanis causes —health and nutrition, education and literacy, and youth leadership development whether through a Kiwanis club’s local service project or through a club’s partner, the Children’s Fund ensures that its grantmaking has the greatest possible impact. Make a club donation through the following link: https://www.kiwanis.org/who-we-are/kiwanis-childrens-fund/annual-club-gift-donation-form/ We need Champions for Children to help with the next chapter of our fundraising that will impact millions of children. “The Kiwanis Children’s Fund develops resources that transform the goodwill and vision of Kiwanians into programs that serve the children of the world.”
