1. The property listed in this catalog is offered for sale by CNA, Ltd. as agents for various owners and other consignors. We reserve the right to withdraw any lot before the close of the sale.

There is a 10% buyer's fee that will be added to all invoices at the close of the sale.

3. All coins are guaranteed genuine and as described based on the most current information available to the cataloguer. Grading is a subjective art. Every effort has been made to be conservative in our grading. Please note that an auction sale is not an approval sale. Lots examined prior to the sale may not be returned for any reason except authenticity.

4 . Terms are for cash, with invoices being due and payable immediately upon receipt.

Payment by check must be made in US funds and drawn on a United States bank. Visa and Mastercard may be used to pay your bill. However, a 3.5% surcharge is made for the use of your credit card. (Our cost from the bank.).

5. Bidders not known to us must provide us with satisfactory credit references. are forbidden from bidding without a parent's signature on the bid sheet.

(500) The types reveal the importance of the Corinthian stater as an international trade coin in the fourth century BC. Syracuse struck this piece for trade with the eastern Greek world.

This type refers to the Greek legend of the Seven Against Thebes. Kapaneus, descendant of Proetus - King of Argos, was one of the seven commanders who agreed to help Polynices recover his throne from his brother. All but one of the seven died in the ensuing seige. Kapaneus was struck down by Zeus while boasting that even the Gods could not prevent him from scaling the walls. It is unclear what relevance all this has to Byzia in Thrace other than making an exciting story. See the play by Aeschylus.

(300) This denarius is the model for the restored issue of Trajan with the word COCLES added before Roma's face. COCLES means "deprived of one eye" and was the surname of the Horatia gens after its legendary hero, Horatia Cocles, who had prevented the Etrurian forces under King Porsena from entering Rome. The female head is supposed to be that of one Horatia, the betrothed of one of the Curiatii (an ancient gens of which three brothers fought against three of the Horatii). In any event, modern numismatists have made the assumption that this coin was originally struck by a descendant of that family which is speculation as Michael Crawford notes in his work.
