01 Power Glove

FutureNova Design Sprint The glove designed to improve quality of life for patients suffering from psoriatic arthritis.

Brief: Develop a smart glove to aid patients in prehabilitation for surgeries on joints affected by rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis. The glove should help build strength in the fingers, wrists and hands ahead of joint surgery, as well as help with regaining strength post surgery.

Psoriasis is a skin condition that causes red, flaky, crusty patches of skin covered with silvery scales, usually appearing on elbows, knees, scalp and lower back.

There’s no cure for psoriasis, treatment improves symptoms. The disease involves stages of having no symptoms or mild symptoms then flares.

Multiple areas of the Power Glove were developped. The original concept stemmed from the idea of a glove that could reduce the pain of the joints in the fingers through heat or massaging. The concept was modelled using cotton and rubber gloves, then further developped.

How It Works Wrist watch that turns heat on/off and regulates glove temperature.

The compression layer helps with blood flow and can be worn up to 8 hours at a time.

The watch strap is made from spandex and cotton, keeping the resistance layer in place.

The glove is programmed to turn off after 1 hour to prevent heat damage.

The glove comes in small, medium and large hand sizes.

Power Glove

The wire connector links the wires in the glove to the battery in the watch using pins at the bottom.

The resistance layer is worn on top of the compression layer to help build strength in the joints. Carbon fibres stitched between fabric layers heat the glove.

The glove is powered by a rechargable 2000mAh lithium battery. The battery must be charged for at least 5 hours for full capacity charge, and will provide heat for approximately 3 hours max.

The carbon fibre wires of the glove, which conduct the heat, are sewn between 2 layers of fabric. The power glove is stylish and sleek. It can easily be worn without feeling self conscious or embarassed.

02 MovaDunny

Engineers Without Borders The more convinient portable toilet solution for land conservation rangers in Cape York, Australia.

Brief: Design a product to store the Lama Lama Rangers’ waste while they are on the land. The device should fit into the rangers existing 4x4s. It should have the ability to be emptied out while on a trip, without polluting the environment or disregarding the cultural beliefs of the people of Cape York.

Research Cape York is a remote peninsula in north Queensland, Australia. Its Indigenous Rangers are responsible for environmental and cultural protection of the area.

They frequently travel across the peninsula, surveying the land and animals. When rangers camp on Country there is a limited amount of greywater that can be discharged into the environment. It is also illegal to release greywater and other forms of waste into National Parks, and open defecation is seen as culturally inappropriate. The biggest sanitation issues faced by the rangers include:

Because of the cultural beliefs and land conservation rules in Cape York, the Lama Lama Rangers must hire portaloos to take on their trips, to manage human waste. This is not the most efficient long-term solution as portaloos are costly, take up much space, and can be difficult to move around due to their size.

The Lama Lama Rangers are the indigenous land conservation rangers of Cape York, responsible for protecting the land, sea, and local cattle.

The model was made using paper mache, spray paint and aluminium foil. The foil was used to replicate the shine and texture of stainless steel. Cardboard pieces were cut as a base model for the paper mache.

After some days, the rangers dump the waste in RV dump site using a pump.

03 BerryBox

Tesco Packaging Project A return system designed to reduce single use plastic packaging for berries in Tesco stores.

Brief: Design a system to help eliminate plastic from berry packaging in Tesco, as well as encouraging continuous recycling of the alternate packaging solution. The system should be fast and efficient, allowing shoppers to easily integrate it to their shopping habits.

Tesco is committed to removing all unnecessary packaging and hardto-recycle materials.

Bagasse is much more ecofriendly than tree based materials, using less energy to manufacture packaging.

Packaging Solution Label printed on paperboard using vegetable based inks. Different labels for different berries.

Wood pulp cellulose film, allowing visibility of the product.

The packaging is made from sugar cane (bagasse). Its waterproof, grease proof, heat resistant and tearproof.

Hexagonal cut-outs aid with depth perception. They are lined with wood pulp cellulose and heat sealed.

Shape has draft angle to allow for stacking, and internal corners to ease picking up of packaging.

Berry Box Development

The Berry Box was designed as a return system for the new sugarcane based packaging solution.

Multiple iterations were considered.

How It Works 1.

Shopper buys Tesco berries in sustainable packaging (each including 50p deposit).

Prints unique QR code & sticks it to bag. Then scans the code plus code on buyer receipt.

Gets a 2nd receipt for return items at check out. Can print or get QR code emailed.

Can individually scan container barcodes & QR code on buyer receipt.

Once done with berries, shopper returns to Tesco to return packaging at BerryBox.

Places items down chute when done. Gets deposit back in 3 5 days after Tesco checks.

Shopper uses screen to select return option. Can return in bulk using owned Tesco bag.

Packaging is cleaned and reused. 50 clubcard points for every 5 items returned.

The aluminium sheets are 3mm thick.

The BerryBox is made from welding aluminium.

The returned packaging can be accessed through the front door, with a key that employes have.

The side of the Berry Box is vivid and eye-catching. It will be facing the entrace/exit door of Tesco.

Graphics are added to Berry Box using flexographic printing.

Branding & Packaging Internship

Project Redesign the packaging and branding experience of a small synthetic wig business. A new brand identity must be created incorporating the vision of the owner, while also taking into account current design trends of similar businesses. The redesigned packaging should represent the new brand identity, as well as being a more sustainable alternative to the previous.

Problem The packaging of the brand isn’t as sustainable as it could be and lacks character, not visually conveying the brand identity.

In addition to this, the brand itself lacks a clear and immediately identifiable brand idenity, making it hard to convey through the current branding.

VISION The brand believes that everyone deserves to have beautiful quality hair.

MISSION • Be a trustworthy brand • Build positive relationships with customers • Offer premium high-quality synthetic hair extensions.

The target users are women aged 21 to 35 in the UK. She is young, social, fun, girly, bold and loves to experiment with her hair so she wears wigs.

CHOICE MATERIAL The packaging material has changed to paperboard.

Paperboard is a thick paper based material. It is more rigid and and foldable than paper, as well as being more durable and waterproof due to its thickness. It is commonly used in food packing. Paperboard is commonly made from wood pulp, straw, wastepaper or a combination of those materials.
